XP Comp cannot access shared folder on Linux Comp

Q: XP Comp cannot access shared folder on Linux Comp

I recently set up a workgroup called "workgroup" so that my two PC's could share files.

The XP comp is called Qing, and can access the workgroup and log onto the linux server called Han (running Fedora 6 with Samba) . Once logged onto Han from Qing, I can see the shared folder, but when i try to access it I get the following message:

"\\Han\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

On Han, the linux comp, I have set up a shared folder called "share" with full permissions.
I have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP and rebooted and still no luck,
I have searched the internet and these forums for a similar problem but was unable to find anything that I could use.

Any help would be great!

thanks

Preferred Solution: XP Comp cannot access shared folder on Linux Comp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a set of files on a Windows Vista computer that need to be shared on a wireless in-house network with a pair of Win XP v2002 SP3 computers. The files seem to be accessible on the network, the firewalls on all three computers are turned off for testing (I'll tweak the rules later once I get it working), they are all on the same workgroup, etc etc. Whenever I try accessing the files on either of the XP computers, Explorer crashes. Do I need to update them? Is there something that I am missing?

Hi.
I just got my new laptop and I am trying to transfer files from old computer to it. I tried to set up a home network by following the wizard. When I go to My Network Places from my new computer, nothing shows. I tried pressing the View Workgroup computers button from there and all I got was:

"Home not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

What should I do?

A:Network Problem. New comp can't access old comp.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

If that doesn't do it, let's follow these basic debug steps.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. A failure here needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs: Workstation, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

I have a computer that is turning 10 years old in a couple of months. It uses a Pentium MMX processor overclocked to 200 MHz. It has 256mb or so of RAM and a 4 GB HDD and 1 GB free. It runs WindowsME and I am thinking of keeping it. My question: Which distribution of Linux is small and fast and does not need a lot of system resources? Would DSL (Damn Small Linux) be a good choice?

Thanks,
Chris

A:Which Linux 4 Slow Comp?

Almost any Linux distribution should do, as long as they support the CPU (some new ones are for Pentium III and newer only, for example).

You should be able to choose what to install, so 4 GB or even 1 GB could be enough.

256 MB is enough for lightweight window managers as well.

First off make sure all PC's are in the same workgroup. second about the pinging your going to have to scour Norton Internet Security 2005 and find where to setup the firewall in it to allow the local PC's to commmunicate.

If you can't ping and they are all on the same router then there definitely is a firewall problem here if they all can web browse just fine.

hi guys! first time posting here but i just wanted to share i have been reading here for a while and i must say that i appreciate all the help you do to those who needs it.

however i got a problem of my own now and i cant seem to find anyone that shares this problem with me.

i got one windows 7 x64 computer (comp A) that is the host for a shared internet connection by network, not wireless.

and i got one windows 7 x64 computer (comp B) that connects to internet trough comp A.

i never had any problems losing connection to internet with comp A however with comp B i often lose internet but only partial. what i mean with this is that the comp B can still for example play games online (for example world of warcraft) and will never lose connection.

but when you try to connect by web browser it's like it can't find the internet sometimes. and sometimes it's suddenly works (even if that might not be to often).

i have no clue what this problem is and I'm happy to share any info you guys may need to fix this problem.

both computers are using Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20)

I have a problem accessing files on my D-Link DNS-320 from my desktop Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, 64 bits.

My WLAN consists of two laptops with Windows XP SP 3 and a desktop with Windows 7 Professional, 64 bits. All three are members of the same work group and are visible to each other.

My XP laptops can access, add and delete files and folders on the DNS-320 without problems.

My Windows 7 desktop can see the volumes and the folders and files in the volumes, but I cannot open the files. When I try to add or delete files, like a JPEG picture, Windows Explorer often hangs and has to restart. I can, however, see the properties for files and folders, but here is the strange thing:

The group and user names are listed in the properties as:

All
Allaccount (Unix Group\ Allaccount)
Linux user?(DLINK-F95B04\nobody)

None of them has any access privileges.

I am logged in as administrator and it is possible to delete the users/group and add new ones and tick in full access, but I cannot save the settings. Access is denied and the list returns to the old list.

I do not have Unix or Linux on any of my computers. So why does the DNS-320 create these users and groups? Is it in any way pre-programmed for Linux/Unix? If so, is there any way I can work around this? The DNS-320 works well with my Windows XP laptops, so why not with my Windows 7 desktop?

A:What has Linux and UNIX to do with D-Link DNS-320 and a Windows 7 comp

What network security have you installed? You should be using SSID (not broadcasting), WPA2, and MAC filtering (so that the router only connects to your devices). It would appear that your router is picking up signals from other networks.

Hello,

So I have just been setting up my new rig and, for several reasons, I was wanting to allow my desktop complete access to my laptop. However, I live in a very friendly household and my computer is in the main area. I allow other people to use the guest account on it all the time, but keep my own account with a password.

We also have many other computers on the same homegroup.

I was wanting to allow just my account on my desktop complete access to some (or prefferably all) files on my laptop.

I tried going Local Disk (C Properties >> Sharing tab >> Advanced Sharing button >> 'Share this folder' checkbox >> Permissions button >> Add button

However when i had entered this I could not get my laptop to access any other locations that itself. It was there that I got stuck.

Is it possible to do what I am trying to do?

Cheers,
David

A:Can I grant shared permissions to a single user from a different comp

Hello DGEccles,
Welcome to SevenForums. What you are trying to do is possible. What you have to do is pick a folder (or directory) that you want to share. In your case, this would be the C:\ drive. However, sharing your C:\ drive across the network, is very risky for many reasons. So I would not recommend this. So, lets get started. First, on your laptop, what you need to do is pick a folder you want to share. This can be your documents folder, another folder, or the C:\ drive. Next, right click the folder you want to share and click PROPERTIES. Next, navigate to the sharing tab and click on advanced sharing. Check the box that says "Share this folder". Next, click on permissions and MAKE SURE THAT YOUR ACCOUNT ON THE LAPTOP HAS FULL PERMISSION. After this, you want to click Apply and close out of all dialog boxes. Now, we move to your desktop. On your desktop, open up Windows Explorer. Navigate to Network on the left-hand side. After that click on your laptop's icon. After that a window will open asking you for credentials. INPUT THE CREDENTIALS THAT YOU SET TO HAVE FULL PERMISSION ON THE LAPTOP. After that you should see all the shared folders on the laptop including the one that you set up.

I hope this helps. (Sorry if this isn't clear I typed this fast so if you need me to re-explain it I will)

A:Newbie questions. Will anti-spyware, etc. slow down comp? Best way to optimize comp?

As a rule, you use:
1 firewall
1 antivirus
* Norton is not the best program around, and it's a resource hog, but since you bought it, you'll have to live with it until it expires.
* Using more then one of each is asking for problems (conflict).
As for antispyware programs, you can have as many, as you want, however, I wouldn't use more then 2 as startups, since you want fast computer.
Your computer specs look very good, but the lower number of startups, the better (this is another thing to check).
As for antispyware, I'd keep Spyware Blaster as a startup program, and I'd add a-squared: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
You may want to run others, you have once in a while, or when any problem arises.

In addition, you want to keep your computer clean of garbage, and for that purpose, you want to get CCleaner: www.ccleaner.com

Once a month, you want to run defrag. I recommend free jkDefrag: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/ instead of Windows defrag.

That's about it. If you have more questions, please, ask.

Computer A: Windows XP Home Edition
Has the Cable modem connected to it
Has the router connected to it

Computer B: Windows 98SE
Being Wirelessly connected to the xp computer

Ok well i know i have my network set up because a) i went through the XP computer, and The 98SE computer is getting an internet connection and finally C) because the XP can connect to the 98SE but not visa versa

Now every time im on the 98SE computer and i try to connect to the XP comp i get this "Resource: \\MAIN\IPC$" Then its askin for a password, ive tried every single password ive known it wotn connect, i have even made an account exactly the same as the 98SE computer on the XP computer. IE (this is true) The windows 98SE computer has a username of Default and password - nothing. So i went to the XP connection, i made an account named Default and in the password field put nothing. I dont know what else to do ive tried everything plz help soon!!!

A:problem connecting 98SE comp to Xp comp but not visa versa

On the XP machine:
1) Is the firewall turned off? If you have SP2 it is turned on by default.
2) Have you shared any folders yet?

I've got an annoying problem I'm trying to smooth out. On my 3-computer LAN, I've got network shares set up on all three comps. (Not homegroup; not public folders; those aren't workable for my situation.)

On my main work computer ("Comp A") (Win 7 Home Premium), whenever I open the sharelist on either "B" or "C", I have the extreme pleasure of waiting 8-10 seconds before the shares on the requested machine are presented.

Other than that, the shares work perfectly, except for the annoying delay every time I want to use Comp A to open the list of shares on Comp B or Comp C.

What I'm sharing: My user directory on each comp. (I'm the only user on this 3-node LAN.) Sharing with Homegroup or Public Folders isn't feasible.

When the delay happens: Courtesy of Wireshark, I've learned that when the delay occurs, it occurs after "Negotiate Protocol Response" and before "Session Setup Request".

I'm also getting the same delay behavior on one other computer (Comp C), but only when accessing the share list Comp A. Here's the specific run-down...

Computer A
Windows 7 Home Premium
Hard-Wired
8-second delay opening shares on Comp B and Comp C.
Computer B
Windows 7 Ultimate
Hard-wired
No delay opening shares on Comp A or Comp C
Computer C
Windows 7 Ultimate
Wi-fi
8-second delay opening shares on Comp A (Home Prem.) but *not* Comp B (Ult.)
I'd really appreciate any troubleshooting suggestions. End result: When I click a computer to ... Read more

I want to be able to print from my XP Computer to the Vista computer in the other room, wirelessly.

XP Home
Vista Home Premium
New, Shared Printer

Printer on the Vista computer is "shared"...I don't know anything about networks
I use control panel: "add a printer" -> "A network printer" -> "Browse for printers" -> it shows some sort of window with icons that don't really mean much to me:

One category is called "Workgroup" and when I click it, the Vista name of the computer in the other room shows up, but nothing happens when I double click that. I connected to a wireless printer a long time ago this way when one was connected to an XP computer, and the actual name of the printer would show up.

Does anyone know how to do it?

Hi, all

I have a file server on linux box. It's used to work fine on Win xp. Now I have new Win 7 box on LAN. It seems works when I map a drive on one shared folder from file server. It didn't ask me user name password and automatically connect. While on XP at the first time connection XP will prompt for user name and password. And I have an old application, which use the file server, runs fine on XP. Now on Win7, it can't access remote drive by complaining no permission nobody. I think Win7 use nobody as user name to connect the remote drive. Is that possible I can change the remote drive login user name and password. I mean let Win7 prompt for a user name and password when connecting to remote drive.

A:problems about shared folder from samba(linux file serv

I think my problem is similar: I connect to a NAS (Western Digital Mybookworld, where I opened a ssh channel, so I can control linux box there - with basic linux and samba) from Windows 7.
Usually I choose its name (\\mybookworld) in explorer and it connects without asking any password.
After 4-5 minutes of inactivity Windows can't access anymore the linux box and seems to me an authentication problem, since other pcs in the network continue to communicate with my nas. If some program was connected, it crashes and it's impossible to kill the process from task manager.
Then I try to put IP address of my NAS it reconnects for some time, then the same.
I must reboot everytime, but due to hanging programs windows does not reboot. I have always to switch power off brutally.
I tried to remove credentials, to activate/deactivate ntlmv2 and ntlm and lm authentication via registry (windows 7 home premium has no gui for that, you must pay some fee more to have a fully functional system?)
No way
I tried to shut down every firewall
Nothing

I don't want to reinstall Windows XP. Anybody there can hel us?

My dad has expensive construction software that he needs on a day to day basis, but his laptop is dying and very slow. Currently his laptop runs Vista x86, and I wanted to give him my laptop that runs 7 x64. Could I swap the hard drives so that its an easy transition, or would that not work? Thanks for any input and suggestions.

A:Hard drive from one comp work in another comp like it did before?

"his laptop is dying and very slow"

that might mean his hard drive is bad, or that he has too many programs/malware installed, in which case you would not want to put his drive in your laptop.

But to answer your question, it depends on how different the chipset drivers are between the two machines. But if you have the win7 x64 install dvd, you should be able to do a repair install if windows is not able to boot after switching hard drives.

You can't do it.
64-bit has to be a clean installation.
You can transfer your data, but all programs have to be reinstalled.

Well this is my first post. I am a fledgling hobbyist at this computer thing and I got this lil comp from my friend for free. It was working great and I was really enjoying checking emails and listening to music on it while browsing the webernet. Two days ago I encountered a virus on the comp while installing some pirated (eeek) software. Needless to say I got my due! The comp rebooted... or I rebooted -I am still hazy on it- and I could not find my taskbar and it looked like half of my desktop icons had been moved down the screen. I tried to move them but nothing worked and I also tried to recover the taskbar using ctrl-esc. Anyway I found your website and someone suggested using DR Web and AVG spyware as well as Smitfraudfix I did all of this and still nothing has changed. There was also a suggestion to use hijakthis so this is the point I am at now. Hello, I have a network of four computers connected to a router, one running linux, one running XP and two running 2000 Pro. On one of the 2k boxes is a lexmarkX83 connected, which works perfectly locally. Except for the linux box, the other computers can print IF I first login by typing \\PrintPC and entering admin identification. If I use guest mode, I can access the printer, but when start printing, it sends about 4bytes of data to the computer and stays in the queue (and after that cannot remove the job, have to restart the PrintPC). So I thought of two solutions to this, but I don't know how to apply them:
-Store somehow the admin ID on each computer so when starting up they connect automatically
-Create a password-free guest account on PinterPC, which would allow an automatic connection without password storage

I've tried both but never managed to get it
to work. Either after a reboot it would say on the "client" boxes that they couldn't establish a connection(if at least it would ask for a password), or it wouldn't print with guest account.
If anyone has an idea how to solve this, it would be great help (been on this now for more then 12hours)
Thanks a lot,
tessx

A:(XP/2k/2k/linux) network with shared printer on 2kPro access problems

Hum Maybe I can simplify the question:
How can I create on my PrinterPC a "workgroup user" ?
When changing settings in the security tab of my printer, i can only choose in the "look in/search in" field my local computer. besides, when I add a "guest" account, it adds PinterPC\guest maybe that's why a remote guest cannot connect ? Would I need some sort of WORKGROUP\guest ?

ether my hdd has had it (i have had it for a while now) or there is a issue with my new ram?
could this be a compatability issue or a fault?

i have tried the windows 7 repair tool but comes up saying cant fix problems. tried restarting from a earlier time, and iv also tried to boot from the windows 7 disk but it just freezes so i can boot or install.

can anyone help me try and get this new beast of a comp up and running ???

Hi,

My mother board fried(or something) on my old computer so I purchased a new one. There were files on my old hard drive I need on my new computer so I attempted to install it on my new computer as a slave drive. Problems arose, most likely because they both have an OS, or some other unknown reason. I am a layman when it comes to computer so I couldn't figure out how to install it properly. I came to a temporary solution though, when I used the IDE cables from the CD-ROM drive in order to hook up my old hard drive. I am now able to access the information on my old hard drive on my new comp - EXCEPT for my old user name in the docs and settings folder. I imagine it's because I was the administrator of the computer, because I can access the other users desktop folder without a hitch on my old hard drive.

I just need to access the folders on the desktop on my old drive - it keeps telling me "access denied".

There are two potential ways I can do this, I guess.

A:Figure out how to boot my computer successfully with the old drive.

B: Since my new drive boots up with no problems, figure out how to access my old drives docs and settings folder when it's on the slave drive.

Does anyone have a solution for this? Any input on either A or B would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

On this network there are three Windows 7 machines and two Windows XP machines. One of the Windows 7 machines is acting as a server providing all the other computers with shared folders that they network to via the "map network drive feature". The two Windows 7 machines connect to this central Windows 7 machine no problem. But the XP machines will sometimes lose connection to the network drives when accessed. They cannot see the network drives until the central Windows 7 computer is restarted. The other two Windows 7 machines have no problem connecting, even when the XP machines are having problems.

I found this article and wanted to check here to make sure it was applicable to my situation before I go ahead and muck around in the registry:
Mapped Drive Connection to Network Share May Be Lost
Problem is, the article says this:

Quote:
On a computer that runs one of the versions of Windows that is listed at the beginning of this article...

There aren't any versions of Windows listed anywhere in the article, or none that I can find. In addition to that, it doesn't specify whether I'm supposed to be doing this on the server end or the client end. I would assume the client end but it's just another thing I want to make sure of before I go ahead and do it.

Thanks for any replies!

I just bought a new computer, and set everything up and the computer is not recognizing the internet connection. When I go to setup an internet connection it tells me to connect to a broadband connection and requires a username and password. The computer is the only one in the house, and is plugged directly into the modem from Time Warner. I have never set up a username or password through my ISP.

When my computer tries to find the broadband connection it says it is connectiong through the WAN miniport. I have bought a new ethernet cord and still no connection. The modem is lit up all the way until PC/Activity and Standby have no lights on. So I assume there is no connection between the modem and PC. I have walked through Dell troubleshooting and they ran diagnostics that told me the network card is ok because we did an ipconfig and a "ping localhost" and it sent and received.

Dell is going to send a tech to the house to replace my motherboard but I figured I would try posting here just in case someone knows a quick fix. I even installed my old network card to the new computer and still no luck.

Please help.

A:New Comp no Internet access

Do you have red or yellow flags in the Device Manager? (Start->Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager)
Have you attempted to reinstall your drivers, despite what Dell says?
The IP Config shows the problem is elsewhere. Have you talked to Time Warner tech support?
You can test by intalling a PCI ethernet card and driver. If that works, it is your board.
