Windows Defender icon now shows in notification tray

Q: Windows Defender icon now shows in notification tray

I know for a fact that Windows Defender did not have an icon in the notification tray/taskbar in Windows 8/8.1. I'm talking about the bottom right and if you have/had Win 7 using MSE you would have the icon (green house with checkmark and flag) if enabled.

When Windows Defender did not have the same functionality for its icon people were really up in arms and many threads talked about hacks to get it to appear. Well all of a sudden I noticed that it was available and if I select "Show icon and notifications" under customize it appears. If I hover over it it shows "PC Status: Protected" just like MSE.

Does anyone else see this? When did it happen? I would have thought I would see some mention of it somewhere since it was a feature (lacking) that really bothered people.

edit: There is even a tutorial here on how to add it. And it says "Windows Defender does not have a icon in the notification area, but it does run in the background by default and will give you a notification if it detects anything."

Windows Defender - Create Shortcut in Windows 8

I'm pretty sure it is not showing because it detected something. Like I said its showing just like the MSE icon.

Preferred Solution: Windows Defender icon now shows in notification tray

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am not sure when and what update this occurred during, but the Windows Defender icon now appears in the system tray, under 2 systems:

Windows 8 Core
Windows 8.1 Pro
To make the icon appear, simply launch Windows Defender from the Start Start.

During a system scan.

During an update.

Mouse-over, during update.

There is currently no context menu added by Microsoft, for Windows Defender on Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.

Is there any way to get the Windows Defender icon displayed in the Taskbar Notification area?

In Win 7 the MSE icon is displayed in the notification area.

I like the info it shows in Win 7 MSE:

It doesn't have it there by default, as it's been more designed to be built in and feels like nothing is in your way, but secure. Basically the premise of Windows Defender before, but with an ACTUAL purpose.

With that Windows Defender shows it is running, but there is no Icon in the notification area.
Should there be an Icon in the Win 8 notification area, like Security Essentials in Win 7?

Computer runs on Windows XP Home SP2. Since the last two or three monthly Window updates, that yellow shield icon - the Windows Update icon - no longer shows up in the system tray. I tried to locate it under "previous elements" (I'm translating from German since my computer language is in German), but it's not there. I only know when Window updates have been downloaded when I want to shut down the computer and I have the option to either first install the updates, after which the computer will shut down automatically, or shut down the computer without installing the updates. Before, when I had the shield icon, I could click on the icon and then choose express installation or customised installation. I can no longer do so simply because that icon is missing. This means that I can only install the updates when I'm shutting the computer. It's a nuisance. I can't even see WHAT the computer has downloaded - the name and number of the fix (unless I go to the software option in the control panel...after the installation). Anyway...how do I fix this display problem?

I've noticed that when my computer first boots up, Windows Defender opens almost immediately when I double-click the system tray icon, but after opening it the first time, subsequent attempts take ~10 seconds after double-clicking the icon.
Any ideas? I've already checked and it's not in the middle of a scan or anything. Also, I've opened Defender from the settings menu (there's a button that says "Open Windows Defender") and it opens instantaneously via this button even when it's opening slowly from the system tray.

Is this normal behavior or is something strange going on here? This is basically a completely fresh install of Win 10 and I'm pretty sure I don't have any viruses or malware going on...

Normally, upon rebooting the speaker icon has a red x for a second or two before disappearing, but now it doesn't disappear. The sound is working okay, the sound mixer doesn't show anything muted or awry and there is nothing amiss in the Device Manager's sound section, so what is with this X?

So my problem is a little different than the others. I can't seem to get rid of my Windows Defender icon, despite the fact that I am not using it as my AV protection. I have the latest ESET Anti-Virus installed, which is listed on their websites as being compatible with the Anniversary Update. I don't have any entries for the icon in my Start Up list. However, the icon is still there. I can shut off Defender, but the icon remains. I don't want two active scanners running at the same time.

Is there a way to shut down Defender for good, or somehow tell Windows 10 I have other AV installed...so stop assuming I don't?

The house has 2 laptops connected to a mobile hotspot.
Both connect fine to the internet. One is a Lenova (Win7 64bit).
When it connects, its wifi shows 2 or 3 bars (for this house,
3 bars is high). The second computer is a Toshiba that I got
2 years ago and it has always shown 5 bars. Because it was the
first Win 7 machine in the house I assumed that was the way it
was supposed to be, until we got the Lenova.
I have searched the Net for some answer, but found none. I have
cleared the Tray Notification Cache with CCleaner but that did
nothing. I ran a program that someone said would fix missing
tray icons and that did nothing.
I have considered swapping that dll file with the icons in it
(forgot the name right now) that I assume both the Toshiba and
Lenova have. Since they both have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit SP1,
I would think the file would be the same. I am just not sure
what would happen.

For other information, the wifi icon will show other 'phases',
When I say phases, I mean: not connected, connecting, can't connect and
connected, but it will not show the separate bars.

I find this a little odd and a little maddening that the all powerful google can't help me!

Thanks.

A:WiFi system tray icon always shows 5 bars when it shouldn't

Go to the Computer manufactures website and Help-support section for Wifi driver updates,
They will usually have a utility to auto search all existing drivers and post the updated releases,
You can also try Intel directly but most will recommend getting them from the manufacture's website.

Hello bageraz and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'd uninstall the Tray Icon Changer using the forced uninstall option from Revo Uninstaller (they have a 30 day free trial.) Hopefully this will also remove unwanted bits and pieces from the registry.

Revo Uninstaller Pro - Uninstall Software, Remove Programs easily, Forced Uninstall

Then I'd try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two) to see if any system files were damaged or corrupted by the TIC. If any problems are noted run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

So a lot of people are complaining about the Windows 10 icon that shows in your icon tray after the KB3035583, which allows you to reserve your Windows 10 copy right away. Even thought you reserve it, it'll stay there. In order to remove it, you simply have to remove it from the start-up (and it's in the Task Scheduler). To do this, follow the instructions below.Edit: Added two other methods, one of which (Method 3) only hides it in the extended icon tray. Only Method 1 and Method 2 will prevent it from launching.Method 1 - Using AutorunsDownload Autoruns.zip from the Sysinternals Suite webpage;Extract the content of the Autoruns.zip folder where you want, then go in the folder, right-click on Autoruns.exe and select Run as Administrator;Accept the EULA on opening, then wait for all the entries to load;Click on Options and uncheck Hide Microsoft Entries, then wait for Autoruns to load the additional entries; In the Filter zone, enter gwx;Entrie related to GWX (Get Windows 10) will appear. Hello All - This is my first post to this forum - please forgive any protocol errors.

My problem is that when Windows Updates are available, the notification icon does not appear in either the notification area or the overflow area. All I see is an exclamation point by the shutdown tab that tells me updates have been downloaded and are ready to be installed.

In the notification overflow area, if I click on customize, I can sometimes see the icon there with a gray description "downloading x% complete. It's never at 100%, and it doesn't change, even after many hours. Sometimes the gray description is there without any icon above or to the left of it.

I've read about the notification icon area reset, but that appears to flush out obsolete icons, I do not know if it is still applicable to my issue. Just to clarify again, the Windows Update Icon "may be visible" when I click on "Customize", but it is never visible in the notification area or the overflow area. I also have it set to show icon and notification.

I've tried to attach a screenshot to give some example.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

If you customize the windows update as "only show notifications" and still it is not hidden, it means that it is in the process of updating. When the update will be installed, it will be back to hidden automatically.

I'd suggest you to not disable automatic updates, only for a system trey icon .

Not important in the vastness of all things Windows 7 but an irritation that has me baffled .... how do/can I get the Windows Media icon to appear in my system/task tray please?

I have Windows Media Centre selected to show icon and notifications but that only shows when updating.

I would like to have easy access to my DVD and CD music playing and so thought that having Windows Media icon in the tray would be the way to go?

All and any help most gratefully received please.

Start Windows Media Center and right click icon on task bar, pin to taskbar. Hopefully you will like this? Then you can start WMC with a single click.

Apologies if this has already been asked elsewhere. I don't have the Get Windows 10 icon in my System Tray. I've tried installing all Optional updates, but still no icon despite Windows Update stating I'm up to date.

I've got both KB2952664 and KBKB3035583, which seem to be prerequisites for Windows 7 SP1 users, but noticed the following updates aren't installed:

KB2965788
KB2984981
KB2709981

All three give the error code 80070308. Do I need these updates for the Windows 10 icon to appear? If so, how do I install these updates? I have a Dell Studio 17 laptop running Windows 7 Premium 64-bit.

Thanks in advance.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a program that displays all windows on the taskbar in the tray, each with it's own icon. For example if I have word and firefox open there would be a word icon, and firefox icon on the tray andt when I click the word icon it would make word the active program or if I click the firefox icon it would bring up firefox to the front.

Just to clarify I don't need a program that minimizes windows to the tray, I need something that shows even open windows on the tray
Thanks for the help

Like most of us, I got the little Windows 10 Upgrade icon in my System Tray a while back. Just before the upgrade was released, I opened it and was told that my PC was ready for the upgrade. Now if I open the icon, I just get a white window with the little "busy circle" going around and around and the message "Please Wait".  I've let it run for over an hour and nothing every changes.

I don't plan on upgrading to Windows 10, so I can do without this icon. How do I get rid of it, especially since it seems like it no longer works?

I notice now that there is this white Windows icon in my taskbar and out of curiosity, I clicked it and see that you can opt in to have Windows 10, the full version, for free. I like to checkout new Windows OS versions, but I hate Windows 8 and would not like Windows 10 "forever" if I try it. I went through the process of saying yes and to my horror, at the end I got a notice that when Windows 10 is released at the end of July, it would be installed!

Whoa, whoa, whoa! I wanted an option on this, not have it rammed down my throat one day after rebooting! This little Windows icon now has me believing that in a month or so, I will reboot to Windows 10 and lose my Windows 7 setup. I don't want this, I just want to see what it is like, not be stuck with it. It hasn't happened yet and so who can tell, but has anyone here had experience with with Windows 10 or especially, how to not have it installed automatically? I am now reading some of the bad stuff about it. OMG, am I really doomed?

A:How to stop Windows 10 from installing from tray icon?

Found it! OMG, I was really going to be stuck with it and with the right Google search, found the way out of it. Here it is for those that opted in to the free Windows 10 upgrade and now do not want it anymore:

How to stop the Windows 10 Upgrade from downloading on your system | Windows 10 content from SuperSite for Windows

I just uninstalled it as a Windows Update and now have to reboot to get it out for good. Wow, that was a close one. Reading about Windows 10 showed me this is something I want no part of! And better yet, how to get rid of that pesky update forever. Hide it.
