My documents' folders have disappeared and extracted all files.

Q: My documents' folders have disappeared and extracted all files.

My girlfriend was on the computer for a bit (she isn't very tech savvy by the way) and when I came back on to open My Documents, all my folders were gone replaced by the files that were located in each and every one of these same folders. Is there a way to revert this or do i have to go through the time-consuming job of regrouping every files into new folders?

Thanks for the help

Preferred Solution: My documents' folders have disappeared and extracted all files.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Tom, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Is this in your Documents library by chance instead?

If so, click on View -> Arrange by -> Folder to see if that may help.

File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by

Hope this helps,

I noticed yesterday that all the files (that were not in subfolders) in the my documents folder had vanished! Completely. Theyre not in the recycle bin, there's no record of them ever being deleted.
A system restore to ages ago doesn't help.

All the important .docs and .txts etc have gone.
All that remains is ONE file i made today and so obviously it happened before that, and all the folders e.g. my scans & my pictures are intact.
Just the 30 odd files that were directly in my documents are gone.

Is there any way i can get them back.
Are they lost forever?

My documents folder seems to be the same one created when i bought the computer so am looking at the right folder.

Only weird operation i can think of that i've performed was a print spool clear operation i found online as my printer queue was stuck, but i dont see a direct connection..

Hello there, I don't usually join forums just to get quick help, but I am really in a bind. I can imagine how stressful it can be to get random users asking questions all the time, but I am in dire need of help.

My mother saves all of her documents in her documents folder, she has her signed rental notes, bills, her tax returns amongst other things, and most every file in the documents folder has disappeared.

There are a couple files that didn't get deleted, some in her roboform folder (which is linked to her browser which is why I assume it wasn't deleted or, it might've been deleted but re-made when she opened her browser) and a couple other random files.

She hasn't been doing anything different the past couple days and she is not sure when exactly it happened, but she needs the files - and they're all gone.

I am not very knowledgeable with Vista but I have checked a few obvious things and none of them seemed to work. What I did try was checking to see if the files were suddenly hidden, but they're not - and the size of the folders is very small (There's about 71 folders and sub folders and of all the files and folders, these 71 folders are all that's left) The documents folder itself is about 1.36 MB (yes, MB.) and I am pretty sure if the files were somewhere in that folder the folder size would bigger, regardless of if the files were hidden or not.

These files are also not in the recycling bin, and I've searched for a couple obvious names via the start menu search o... Read more

I don?t know why! When I went to use my USB on my computer yesterday, all files and folders were disappeared strangely. I clearly remembered I had saved some files on this USB drive in the morning. But, nothing seemed to be left. But,
in properties, half of the space drive was still used. Did that mean all my files and folders were still there? Is there any way to get them back?

A:All files and folders disappeared! Help me, please!

Have you accidentally hidden them?
Try to show them up again: Start => Run => Type in ?control folders? and press ?OK? =>Click ?View? and hook ?Show hidden files and folders?=> Press ?OK?
But, if these steps cannot make a sense, your drive may get some problems.
Try to restore the inner saved files back with the help of data recovery software and format it to see whether it is fixable afterwards.
As to data recovery software, you could easily get a plenty of ones on the internet. Simply search some drive data recovery freeware to take chances at first, such as Recuva, Power Data Recovery and iCare Data Recovery free and etc.
Never try to save the important data on only one drive in the future.

as stated in the title, I was working on a design-related project; thus, I created folders for that project and had source-files within these.

Today, as I wanted to check back on that project, the folder just disppeared - it is not there, nor are any files left.

I've had some strange responses on behalf of my HDD when trying to save from Photoshop to my D: Partition ( please view this thread). I did however partially ignore them, for at the second or third attempt to save any file (specifically from Photoshop CS4) the 'corrupt-message' did not show up, and I was able to save my files.

Now, I realize that my HDD probably did not really save these files; so when I restart my PC they're all gone.. Is this possible? I know there are tools to recover lost data, should I try (i.e. KillDisk) or would that be, in this case, useless?

Thank you very much in advance, and please, help me! I cannot keep on working knowing that tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow, all my work will be gone!

Best regards,

A:Files&Folders within HDD just disappeared?

UPDATE: I just did a deep search for the files I had lost, and I've discovered that all my 'disappeared' files are inside D:\found.00x\dir0000.chk - could someone please enlighten me: I suppose the found.00x folder is some sort of fail-safe folder that is created when Windows realizes a document/folder is being deleted without the user's consent?

I somehow acquired "Windows Recovery" or something, managed to remove it using Malware Bytes, but on restart, majority of my desktop items had disappeared along with all the folders in my documents/libraries and some program folders in my star menu. I can save new files but cannot find old ones and the space of my hard drive hasn't changed much at all, and I know there was several gigabytes of files in my documents and other folders so it makes me think that everything is still on there, but moved to somewhere else? Also, I can go in to Word or Excel and open recent files listen under the "File" menu without problem.

Could someone help me recover what seems to be hidden?

System is XP Pro SP3 and seems to be running fine. Most of my music files are kept on a second HDD (i:) dedicated to storing music and photos, with all of the music in the 'My Music' folder, with sub folders for each artist. The library consists of over 8,000 items, most in .flac format, ripped from my CDs. I have a Logitech Squeezebox which accesses the library through the squeezebox server software on the computer. Other installed music software is Windows Media Player 11 and Media Monkey.

Accessed the 'i:\My Music' folder yesterday and noticed that all of the library had disappeared with the exception of folders starting with the letter A. The capacity of 'My Music' shows about 4gb instead of what should be ~100gb. However, when checking the capacity of the drive, well over 100gb had been consumed as is normal. Showing hidden and system files did not change anything. Not sure when this happened as I don't access this drive very often, only when I'm moving files, adding music etc.

When I open Media Monkey or the squeezebox server, both show the complete library and will play the music instantly. Windows Media Player is unable to access the files however. Also, Media Monkey has the option of viewing files in file manager. Doing this pops open a My Computer window, showing the proper... Read more

I was attempting to backup my system to an external drive, interrupted it, then all the files I saved on my desktop were gone. I can't find them through the start menu search nor are they in the recycle bin. I tried to restore the system to an earlier save, no dice.

1. are the files gone?
2. what happened?
3. is it a bad idea to save files to the desktop? It looked like that is where windows places my documents by default? Is it dangerous to just create C://documents for a computer with one user?

A:folders, files disappeared from desktop

1. If you can't find them, yes. To be sure did you look at the folder C:\Users\<your account>\Desktop? Try a data recovery program, such as Recuva Portable.

2. Have no idea.

3. It's not good to clutter the desktop with too much "stuff," but I always download to the Desktop for convenience. Then I soon delete temporary files and move permanent ones elsewhere.

I'm baffled.

I was working with Photoshop and i suddenly noticed many files (psd, jpeg and 2 folders with pictures) disappeared from my Desktop. Also the appearance from Stardock Fences is different.

Last actions i did:
1: i was trying to fix an issue with color settings in photoshop. (When saving to jpeg, the colors would be different in the saved jpeg.) i messed around in color settings. Maybe the color settings changed in Fences/Windows while i was doing so in Photoshop? If that's even possible.
2: i was wondering what Export/Zoomify... was. Exported current job to output location "Desktop" and Pressed OK. an error message popped up, didn't read it, closed it. Then checked desktop for exported html file or something and noticed all the files were gone. mostly the files i used in photoshop. but also a folder nothing to do with the program.

This is the last "daily snapshot" i have from the desktop icons (shot by Fences' daily snapshots)

This is a snapshop after the icons disappeared

As you can see, files are missing and the blurred style of Fences changed, the fences are there but fully transparant.

The files are not in the Bin and can't find them with "Everything" search engine.
I don't have a clue what hapend!

I was transferring pictures and files from my old A:drive floppy disks to CDs so I would not lose them. I copied and labelled over 100 discs sorting them into 4 different folders on the CD/DVD burning screen. I selected the first folder and told it to write the disc. It did that perfectly but when I returned to write the second folder to a new disc all of the waiting folders had disappeared. I have searched the C: drive and it does not find the folder names or any of the files names I had put into the folders. I'm frantic and do not want to have to copy and label all of those floppies again. The computer I'm using to do this is not my own. Can anyone help me please?

A:4 folders of files waiting to be burned to cd disappeared.

If the CD was never burned, those files were never "in" a folder. They MAY have been saved in a temporary file somewhere, but it only looks like they are in a folder prior to a burn.

This happened because your method was wrong, it seems. Had you first copied the files/folders to a folder on the "C:\" drive, they would have been safe. Then you could have transfered them to CD.

Hi, I've search around the forum and the net and couldn't find a solution yet so I'd like to post the problem here.

Basically, some (not all) of my folders and files and gone in windows explorer. I'm using xp, and I've try everything to get the folders and files appear: hidden files, changing properties, deleted the regedit entry as mircosoft suggested...nothing helps. The thing is, I can access my folders and files still so I KNOW they're there (programs are usable, full address in address bar can access the folders), it just didn't show up in the explorer. I'm out of ideas here other than try to reinstall xp (I have a xp disk), but I'd like to ask for suggestion here first. Thanks.

Hey everyone, Ok heres the vitals. I have a PC running Windows XP, Service Pack 2. The PC is a Dell Dimension DE051 with an Intel Celeron 2.53GHz and 512 megs of ram. Now I know i should be running at least a 1 gig but I'm poor so I'll handle the slowness. Now recently I was making some video and was attempting to create a new folder in MY VIDEOS located in MY DOCUMENTS to store the new video to keep everything all nice and tidy, but when I attempted to rename the folder to something different I recieved an access denied message. I then right-clicked and went into the properties on the folder and found it was checked as read only. So as anyone would I unchecked it and hit ok and attempted to rename my folder once more. Still to no avail with the access denied message greeting me. I remembered I had heard once that if folders are shared between computers that the folder is created as read only. Windows Media Player is set, on my pc, to share music, pictures, and movies with my XBOX 360. So I shut off the sharing aspect and attempted to rename again. Still the access denied message popped up. So now I'm stumpped and looking for some help. I am running a wireless network that had previously shared with another PC but I unshared it. I really hope someone can help me.

A:New files and Folders in My Documents are Read Only

What types of files are they? If avi's, explorer may be scanning them and that is why the access message.

You could try one of these to determine what app has locked the files:

(PS. I doubt very much that 1 GB of RAM would change anything at all. XP uses 512 optimally and after I installed 1 GB and monitored mem usage for a while, I removed the second 512 since it was never used.)

I downloaded the service pack and an update to Norton in the last 10 days. I don't know which caused the problem, but I suspect Windows.

In the My Document folder, the links to any file that has a name that starts with the letters N-Z are gone. Links to folders such as My Pictures, My Webs, My Videos are also missing. They are also missing from the Microsoft Office applications like Word and Excel.

Whenever I save something with a file name that starts with those letters, it doesn't save it. But the files are still in the computer.

Also, when I do a search of the files, they do come up, but I cannot paste them or save them into the My Documents file.

The files are still on my computer, but I can't get to them. How do I restore the My Documents file to work properly. I am using Windows Xp.

First, it was a random music file that I thought I had misplaced or deleted. A thorough search of the computer, including recycle bin did not reveal it, so I just transferred it back from my backup.

Then, I had a virus or several, got help on this board, everything was back to normal, as far as I knew, until entire folders started disappearing from My Documents. I ran chkdisk and even defragmented my drive, not really knowing what else to do, but (obviously) my files have not come back. The only thing I have installed since getting my system cleaned up was a Firefox update and some Windows updates, but my files have been disappearing before I did either of those.

I have no clue why this is happening; any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have the view set to show Thumbnails do the following:
Open the folder to see the thumbnails.
Hold the Shift key down and click on the View button and select Details.
Remove your finger from the Shift key. You will now see file names.
Hold the Shift key down and click on the View button and select Thumbnails.
You will now see thumbnails with file names under them.

I don't know if I'm just loosing my mind or if this is actually happening. But if I have a folder or file in my documents and not touch it for a few months, I swear it like deletes itself on it's own 0_0 A couple times I've noticed that they make themselves invisible and I don't notice it unless I do the "show all hidden files/folders" check box. But today I noticed this folder to a sound track I have no longer seems to be on my computer. I know I can be trigger happy with deleting things sometimes, but I'm pretty sure I didn't delete it. I don't think its viruses or malware or anything either, as I run both my anti virus and anti spyware programs on full system scan and nothing other then my usual tracking cookies from sites like my space and that such is detected. I've no idea of how you are doing yourself in, but under the circumstances:

1. I strongly recommend that you start using the best, most reliable, and easiest to use backup software available, namely, Window 7's own Backup & Restore. Try it out.

2. Download an excellent free recovery software, Recuva, Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

For simple file/folder type backups, you might want to take a look at another free microsoft product, SyncToy,

I have hundreds of folders (these came from files that I downloaded from a server). Each folder contains a folder path that leads to a single text file, and every single one of these text files has the same file name, so I have been unable to combine all of these files into one folder without renaming each file individually (which has taken 3 days so far, and will take another 2 weeks at this rate).

The lengthy folder path is something like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\jessica.walker\jul aug sep 06 op\Patient_Accounting_-_History\PABILL66\20060701\02765

and the text file is always named Page0.txt

The structure is something like this:
-aug sep 06 op

Basically each "date specific" folder contains a dozen more folders.

Is there any way possible to extract all of these files into one folder? Ideally, I need all of the files from the "02765" folders in one folder, all of the "06320" files into one folder, and so on.

Would appreciate any help!!!!

A:Hiding Documents and files in folders

If these are created by an editing program such as Vegas, SoundForge, or some other program, you can try setting them as "Hidden Files" but that may either muck up opening the files in the editor or alternatively, create a duplicate that isn't hidden, in which case you'd end up back at square one.

An hour ago I tried to open my files folder and found that 98% of my files including my folders disappeared form my secondary (G) internal (slave)hard drive, I have all my documents, music, photos, etc. in it.
I didn't use my computer yesterday. Last time I turned on my computer was 2 nights ago being outside the city using the LogmeIn Free software from a laptop to manage 4 files from my folder.
I was trying to convert a couple of one-note documents into pdf but the wide band connection disconnected several times so I decided to quit doing it and shut off the computer, at the same time when I was shutting down the computer my son told me that a lighting stroke near the house and that once he got inside the house and went to check on my computer, the computer was installing the windows updates... as soon as these were installed the computer shut down by itself...
Now its 2 days later and only my files and folders are missing from my slave hard drive, not any other file or folder (my son's or my wife's) are missing... only mine.
Has anyone else had this problem before? I haven't tried restoring or anything else, I have only tried searching for my missing files using the Windows Search button and can't find them.
I have Windows XP Professional SP2 installed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

About a month ago I lost the option (right click or in the pane to the left side of window) to rename files or folders that are in My Documents.
I had a friend look at it and he was able to verify that they could be renamed using the DOS prompt and the REN command.
I did a Disk Cleanup, ran Malwarebytes, ran AVG virus scan, and then did a Defrag. When I did the defrag, I noticed that I have a lot of files

However, I don't have this problem with files on my desktop. Just in My Documents.

Something is causing all My Documents files and folders to show up on my Desktop (along with what is normally there).
They are not shortcuts.
Properties show that they are actually located in My Desktop folder, but in My Documents, where they belong.

How I got to this state:
When I originally installed Win8Pro, I used sysprep to move Users to D drive, at OOBE.
I tried to reverse this, so I could upgrade to 8.1, but sysprep fails to get me to audit mode.
So I booted into Safe Mode with a new temp admin acct, and copied users back to C drive.
Then I used regedit to point all the profiles back to C drive.
Rebooted. Logged into my main account.
I then used Properties on all my Profile movable folders to move that content back to D.
All well and good until my Desktop fills up with files and folders, that aren't really supposed to display there.
They work the same and point to the same files if I access them normally through my account icon.

I've been looking for copy errors, haven't found anything yet.
Any ideas?

A:All My Documents files and folders showing on my Desktop

OOBE is the MS Activator, it should be in the Windows/System32 folder. Was there an OOBE folder on the D drive?

I'll have to read up on Sysprep.

But, you copied your USERS folders right over the new Users folder right? All I can say about that, is that you should not have moved certain files that are in the root Users folder, like the DAT files.

I'll have to look up a old post to confirm that.

Ok, here is what I found:

System loads "Temporary Profile"

My system was loading a Temporary Profile. I had to make a new account and move all of my USER files to a new user account.

You CANNOT copy the NTUSER.DAT files, but you can copy every single other file and folder.

The NTUSER.DAT file that was in there, probably fouled up the copy and shunted all of the Docs into the Desktop Folder.

A:How to move files/documents to specific folders?

Open up My Computer. If you do not see a toolbar with File, Edit, View, Tools, Help click on Organize/Layout and check Menu Bar.

If you want to MOVE the files (which will delete them from your computer when you move to the flash drive) choose the file(s) then click File in the menu bar. Use MOVE TO FOLDER. Choose your flash drive and navigate to the folder where you want to put them.

If you want to COPY the files to the flash drive use COPY TO FOLDER under File.

Windows Vista Ultimate... no SP

Here's what just happened. My Documents folder had several subfolders in it as well as a bunch of files. My hard drive (Western Digital 150GB Raptor) was getting a little full so I was looking for stuff to delete.

I found a folder called 'Converted Videos' which had some extra video files I had converted to PSP format. I examined them, didn't need them, highlighted the folder and pressed the Delete Key. Clicked OK.

Next I saw a bin/cue file pair of about 330mb. Was just named 'image' so I figured it was probably something I had no need for anymore. I highlighted both files with Ctrl-click and pressed the 'delete' key again.

Windows gave an error something like the files could not be found. But there was a UAC prompt behind them saying I needed to confirm the action. I cancelled out and tried again, same error. This time when I cancelled the entire contents of the Document folder just vanished in front of me although I could still see the folder structure on the left pane.

I tried clicking on the left pane and nothing appeared, just errors that the folder could not be found. When I closed Computer and opened it again, the Documents folder was completely empty.

Nothing is in my Recycle bin. Also my Documents folder icon (the normal blue/green one) is GONE and its just looks like a normal folder. Tried 'Previous Versions', that's empty too.

Vista seems to have screwed me over big time. ... Read more

A:Can not delete Windows folders/files from My Documents

Hello TRinAZ,

If it's still there after restarting the computer or refreshing (F5) the window, then you might see if using the free program Unlocker on the folder may be able to allow you to delete it afterwards.

Hope this helps,

Over the years I've tried to save all my documents. This means that they have been copied from folder to folder and computer to computer (whatever was before Windows 95) probably mostly through external storage. However, some of these were saved directly to the 2nd internal hard drive D:\ of Windows 8 may be included, but I'm not certain.

I believe all of the folders are present, most of which are identified by date. However, many of the folders are completely empty. I cannot see a pattern as to which folders. This seems to involve mostly older folders, (and this may mean that it is more likely that they have been through a USB device) but not all of the older folders are empty. More recent ones are also empty. Otherwise, I cannot identify any specific documents, only that large numbers of folders are empty.

I doubt it is possible to recover anything but I would like to prevent this from happening in the future.

Any advice or comments will be greatly appreciated.

A:Empty folders with vanishing files, Mostly documents.

On the odd chance, open one of the folders and click the View tab, do you have a check mark in show Hidden files.

I noticed I had two copies of the My Documents folder, one in my user folder where I want it, and the other buried deep in my pictures folder (I think I accidentally dragged and dropped it there once when I was trying to change the order of icons in the navigation pane). I deleted the one in my pictures folder, and both folders disappeared!

What happened?

I closed the screen out, re-opened "my computer," and see both My Documents folders back, but empty.

1) How can I recover my files? My last backup was last week, and I've written quite a bit since then. I was actually about to back up again when I saw the annoying second folder and deleted it, not realizing they were linked. The folder was too large and bypassed the recycle bin.

2) How can I fix the two folders issue? I have the same problem with my music folder also, and have had problems with the folders under my username seeming to disappear, reappear, and move for no apparent reason.

The computer has Windows 7 Professional.

Thanks for any help.

Why are the files and folders listed in "My Files" and My "Documents" two different colors?
About one-half of them are blue and the rest of them are black.

This is not causing problems but I would like to know the reason for this. Thanks, oris

A:File Titles In My Documents And My Files Folders Are Blue And Black

Hi and Welcome to Bleeping Computer Oris,Here's a short version...Blue files are compressed files. They got that way when you ran the disk cleanup utility and choose to compress old or rarely used files.Have a look at Compression blues are cured with quick click.

My sister has used windows pcs very productively for many years and currently has a 4-year old Win 7 64bit pc with 8gb ram. Her 500 Gb HDD is only 40% full.

The other week, doing something in Windows Explorer, she suddenly found that many system folders/files had appeared in her Libraries/Documents folder along with the normal folders and files you would expect to see. The listings are in the attached Word file.

There are some shortcuts which presumably can be deleted without any problem but she is concerned about other folders/files which don't appear to be shortcuts.

Any suggestions for restoring her Libraries/Document folder to the normal content will be much appreciated.

13 February. Thanks gentlemen. I should add that my sister did a System Restore to a date prior but it didn't change anything. Also, she lives 30 miles away so what you see is what she emailed me.
I tried to 'save as' the .docx to Word 2003 but it froze; however, have added my .png screen shot of the page.

Thanks in advance,

A:System folders & files suddenly appeared in Libraries/Documents

I'd like to assist, but I'm using Microsoft Word 2003 and it's not able to read this. Can you take some screenshots? Use the .PNG format too for the highest quality screenshots without increasing the file size too much.

In Win2K I can't double click on the Recycle Bin, My Documents,My COmputer, My Network Places, or Search for files or folders. When I do double click on them the desktop icons disappear for 2 seconds and then the desktop reappears. Any Clues ??

A:Can't get into My Documents,My Computer, Network Places,Search for files/folders

Check to see the mouse settings on your system. See if your left mouse button is still set to Click/Select. Also see if you can right-click on the icon and select "Open". Your problem may be something unrelated, but it's worth a try.

I used 7zip to open up a .gz zipped/archived file. It seems like 7zip extracts and downloads the files to open it? Is that correct? If so, where are the files located? Or is it just stored somewhere temporarily and then deleted after?

I have a 64-bit Windows 8.1 HP. It came pre-installed 7-Zip. When I extract it changes the file names automatically upon extraction.

On my old Windows 7 desktop I had WinZip and this never happened. So I purchased and installed WinZip on the Windows 8.1 and the same thing happened, it changed the file name automatically.

I have tried all over the net and on this site to find a solution but to no avail. I also compared WinZip settings on the W7 and I can't really tell if they are the same as it is different on W8.1

My real concern is that when I extract the folder, it changes the files names adding additional characters where there would be spaces and then an extension of numbers.
Windows 7 did not do this at all. Please help!!! How can I turn this off?

But when i refresh my desktop

A:Delay Showing Extracted Files

This could be related to a corrupted IconCache.db file. Delete C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\IconCache.db and restart your computer.

I don't know if other people had this problem but I have a folder that I need to extract but apparently when I extract it to desktop, I click on the folder and noticed some files were missing. I check the unextracted folder and all the files were fine.
I realized when I extract the folder to desktop, the files aren't actually deleting because they seem to be there in the unextracted folder but not there when I extract them.
the next thing I tried is extracting one file that gets deleted from that folder into the desktop and then nothing happens. So the main thing is that the files wont extract to the desktop for a weird reason. I use McAfee anti virus and I tried disabling
everything possible from it and extracted the file. But it didn't work; also i'm running Windows 10.
All I know is that this is probably not from my antivirus and it has to do something with the file not being extracted.

Please help me fix this problem ASAP as the internet has no good answers or no answers at all.

A:I dowloaded a rar/zip files of 256MB however when i extracted is 3.58G what program c

What was the extension of the compressed file and what types of files did it contain?

But it really isn't about the program doing the compressing but the data that is being compressed. Some types of files, such as many image files, are already compressed and any attempts at further compression will accomplish little if anything. Some file types, such as text files and some others, compress very well.

I would like to ask how to set WinRAR to exclude files with the exact filenames: 'thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' (without the quotes, ignore case) from being extracted from an archive.

Ex. Files with these filenames should not be extracted:

while files with these filenames should be extracted:

Abcd thumbs.db.txt

In 'Settings->Security->Prohibited file types->File types to exclude from extracting', if I just type in 'thumbs.db .DS_Store' (without the quotes) in the field, will it work the way I described?

Also, does anyone know if WinRAR has a syntax guide for the Prohibited file types list in case I'd like to add more filenames or be flexible with the rules I need?

The reason for this question, is I'd like to not extract unnecessary files from ZIP, RAR or 7z archives in Windows 7 - files like Windows 2000/XP's Thumbs.db file (Thumbnail cache) and Mac OS X' .DS_Store file (Desktop Services Store), while not being too strict and also not extracting files which just contain 'Thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' in its filename.

A:Setting WinRAR to exclude specified files from being extracted

Yes, it should work.

Here is a piece from WinRar 4.0 Help file

Files to exclude
File masks and file names to exclude from the archiving operation. Wildcards are supported both in path and name parts of masks. If you need to specify several masks, separate them by spaces. If mask contains spaces, enclose it in quotes. For example, you may enter:

c:\temp\info.txt *.bak *.tmp *\temp\

to skip c:\temp\info.txt file, all .bak and .tmp files, all temp folders and all files in temp folders. You may enter file names manually or use "Append" button to browse for file to exclude.

Detailed information about exclusion masks syntax is provided in description of switch -x. This switch uses the same format of exclusion masks as "Files to exclude" field.
