Have been using Zone alarm, but may go to Comodo

I use primarily Firefox and keep current with updates. I try to scan my computer, a desktop put together for me by a family member, once a week. They installed McAfee Professional, but the rest is free stuff: SpyBot Search and Destroy, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SUPERAntispyware, Defraggler ( at least once a month ), No Script, Abine, and similar - all freeware. Oh yes, CCleaner. They do not seem to interfere with each other.

The problems are this. I have several Firefox Extensions and I think some of these are causing trouble. I ran Firefox in safe mode after disabling all extensions. This helped, but I think there may be Profile problems, too. I've had trouble getting good directions for fixing that. Mozilla is crashing a lot. Running in safe mode is much better, but it still crashes or turns white.

Plus, I'm starting to have trouble running security scans from the programs listed above. The above register a fair amount of adware. That's one reason I went to No Script, which seems to help a lot. Just today, I had trouble logging into my one Yahoo account. Password didn't work. And I couldn't seem to get the help from Yahoo I needed. So, I suspect something is in there eating, too, but I have no idea what it is and have not been able to find it. Firefox is getting more unstable, so I'm trying to find out what extensions may be causing problems and if possibly the Profile needs to be looked at. I really need help. I do not know how to get rid of whatever HiJack finds either.

I have attached a log of HiJackThis

Thanks, Desert_gold

Preferred Solution: Lots of problems - maybe malware, profile and extension problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, my name's Katie and I'm having major virus/spyware,adware,malware removal issues! I

have a lot of different things going on here, and can't make any sense of it. I tried

following other people's solved threads, but they didn't solve my issues, so I guess I need

personalized help. I have Windows security running (well, I usually do when it's working

properly,) and I run Ad-Aware and Spybot regularly, but it appears that they cannot solve

my issue. Anyway, here's a list of things that have been happening to my computer since the

virus happened...

1. I KNOW the virus was contracted in AIM. An IM came in from a friend with only a link. It

didn't look suspicious to me, so I clicked it, and all of a sudden I had IMEd everyone in

my buddy list the link, and received about a million IMs back (didn't have time to read

them before My Computer's virtual memory ran out and crashed AIM on me.

2.When the computer starts up, sometimes a default background appears before the logon

screen with the user accounts appears.

3.After logon, the same thing in general happens every time. Spybot comes up with a bunch

of messages saying that there is a registry change to my homepage or something else

happening. I deny it, and it denies it over and over again to seemingly no avail. A .txt

file appears on the desktop. I have never opened this file, don't know what it is, and

delete it every time. My homepage is con... Read more

I don't see any anti-virus software running unless the SpySweeper is providing that.
Download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.

Close any open browsers.
If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTScanIt, allow it to run.
Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
Under Additional Scans put a check in the box for Disabled MS Config Items
Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
Save that notepad file
Please post the resulting log here as an attachment.
Click on the blue Reply button
scroll down to Manage Attachments
Click in the box that says Upload File from your Computer
Click the Browse... button and find the file then click open
Click the Upload button
Wait until you see Current Attachment and your file name
Click on Close this window
Then submit the reply.

Hi,

My son (i'm using his account at his direction) has been a member for a while and has used these forums for lots of help; just wanted to say thank you in advance as he told me he was very impressed with the help that he has received in the past. With that said, my laptop his been acting very strange. I told my son I was having "issues" and he suggested that I start by getting malwarebytes anti-malware, run it, and go from there. I did as he told me and am still having problems. I'm having all kinds of obviously fake warnings pop up, one in particular is XP Internet Security (others include google searches being redirected and homepages being changed). I'm not sure if i'm posting in the right place (if not, sorry), but can you help? Where do I start and what do I need to do?

Thank you again in advance
Cathy

My laptop has been infected with several different types of malware over the past few weeks and I cannot get rid of any of it. Here are the symptoms:

PC boots up as normal into Windows, then runs slowly. An error message comes up saying that Google Installer has encountered a problem and needs to close etc.

I have tried to run Spybot - Search & Destroy but it will not actually run - Task Manager shows the process as running but nothing actually happens. I have also tried to install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from the .exe on my desktop but again this will not install - the hour glass appears for a second then disappears.

Here is the HJT log that I have just run:

I have been using AVG free for the most part and recently I have been receiving a message stating that:

Application cannot run due to an error while verifying its electronic certificate.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled AVG several times only to see the error message repeat the second I reinstall it. I even went so far as to completely wipe my hard drive, delete the partition using windows setup and reinstall Windows XP, only to find the same error message once I got Windows and AVG reinstalled. I am really afraid that there might be a Worm or a piece of malware on my computer that is attacking an anti-virus system file. I have tried a myriad of different anti-virus programs only to receive various different error messages telling me that their system files have been hijacked. Can someone please help me. Ok, I'm just happy I was able to get onto this website. Just to start off, I have Windows Vista Home Premium. So basically, a day or two ago I started getting an error message saying that "Host Process for Windows Services has stopped working". When I clicked "Check online for solutions" it wouldn't connect me to the Internet and said the page couldn't be displayed every time I tried. Hi This is my first time posting, and I have a lot of things causing problems with my computer, but to start off, here are my specs.

Windows 10 Pro
Intel Core i7-4770s CPU @ 3.10GHz
8 Gb Ram Corsaire Vengence 4x2
64 Bit
AMD Radeon HD 7700 GDDR5 1Gb (two of them w/ crossfire)
2 Tb 7200 Rpm Seagate HDD
z87-g45 Gaming Motherboard
Case: r5 Gaming Full size case
Power Supply: Corsair AX860
Fans: Rosewill Hyper Silence CPU fan, 2 stock front fans, 1 stock in back

So, to start off, I built this computer myself 2 years ago, and it has been running steadily without too many problems along the way, but earlier last year it began to have some much bigger problems.

Issue 1. Monitor Issues
I say this is a monitor issue, but i really doubt it has anything to do with the monitors them selves. What is happening every once in a while (about 3 times a week) the screens of my monitors will cut to black (it doesn't matter what I'm doing) and stay black for a few seconds before revealing the task bar at the bottom of the screen, and then the rest of my desktop slowly reveals itself. I've tried updating my video card drivers, but that hasn't helped.

Issue 2. Keyboard and Mouse Become unresponsive (System isn't frozen however)
Sometimes if I leave my pc idling in the lock screen, the keyboard will stop working, and when I come back, I can't log in. I can tell my computer is not frozen because the slideshow in the lock screen keeps moving and I can move my mouse (bu... Read more

Hi,

I sure need help  --- I do not know how to deal with viruses, trojans, spyware, etc.

My husband and I were traveling. We had to use public Wifi places to check our email on our laptop. when we got home and checked our email accounts on our laptops, we found some really weird looking email messages. I 'think' my husband opened one that had his name in the Subject line, but we deleted all he other ones that looked strange. We did not open those emails, just deleted them.

Now all 3 of our computers are doing really weird things. I have run scan after scan after scan, both downloaded one and online ones. Sometimes they find problems and fix them. sometimes the scans find nothing. Yet our problems just seem to be getting worse and worse. I DESPERATELY need a lot of help.

I know it would be very confusing to try to work on all 3 of our computers at once so maybe we can start with my husband's desktop computer.

I am currently running Avast on it and it has been running for hours. It is find TONS of things like these ----

"...is infected by win32:Funweb-K [Pup}"

"...is infected by JS: ScriptIP-inf [Trj}

etc, etc, etc.

I have very little knowledge of how to fix a computer problem and no idea what to do. And I have absolutely NO idea how our desktops became infected from our lap top.

Is anyone willing to help me? I know it is bad and will probably take a long time to fix, but I need help... Read more

Ok, I have lots of XP problems:

Can't open My computer from the desktop, the computer just locks up whilst attempting to open it, showing me the animated torch, saying it is looking for files.

The computer is running really slow, locking up and crashing programs for no apparent reason.

Cant access the drop down box (shortcut key F4) in windows explorer/applications/anywhere.

Internet explorer refuses to do anything if I type a web address without the http:// into the address box. It worked before, but now it isn't for some reason.

Finally, when I restart windows, it locks up for anything up to 5 minutes when it comes back up. The windows bar with the start button on, when I pass my mouse over it, the pointer turns to an hourglass and I am unable to do anything unti it sorts itself out.

I have tried running several anti virus programs, including AVG, Mcafee and Norton. Only AVG came up with a virus, 'Dialler'. I cleared this and it didn't make any difference. I alos tried system restore from several points, but each time it told me that it was unable to restore.

If ANYONE can give me any help at all, I would be extremely grateful.

Yours,

Wayne Donnelly.

Hey, I'm new here, obviously.

I've got a should-be-very-simple question.

I'm using a program called Mobile6, it's an EPA issued program which calculates emission results for cars, etc.

anyway, the program uses a DOS interface and requires an input file with the extension ".IN"

this input file is always compiled in notepad. So, when I go to save the file, I save it as whatever.IN, not as .IN.txt or anything, but of course notepad adds its .txt extension. I can't get XP to stop associating it with notepad.

even if I change the folder options of that file to always open with Mobile6, it still thinks it's a .txt file. I've used another XP Pro PC where when you saved the file, it appeared as whatever.IN.txt and you could simply rename it and remove the .txt part, and then XP wouldn't associate it with any particular program. But alas, I don't have this ability with my pc.

Please help guys, this is driving me nuts!

thanks, Kevin

make it say all files.

Hi again

My friend, using Windows XP is having problems with .csh appearing when using Nuendo 2 / 3 - he cannot save any recordings. In addition, the internet crashes, programs cannot be opened, are slow or crash and he has to re-start his PC a hundred times a day.

He has tried to run AVG but it gets stuck in one place and he has to abort it.

Timeline :

- 2 weeks ago he changed from mobile to fixed line internet
- 2 weeks ago he downloaded a program which contained .zip files (not normally a problem)
- last week he downloaded Adobe Acrobat Reader 11 (free version)

His technician insists there is nothing wrong, but he has now been to him 4 or 5 times and there is something very wrong !

Any ideas please - our mutual work has come to a standstill

Thanks

Can you also try to change the setting back to default. Restart and then change it back to this again and see how it goes.

I am currently using Windows Vista and at some point when closing a window in Internet Explorer every .exe file extension changed to windows media player type files. and only open in WMP which in turn WMP cannot use, and says as much. Everything on my computer except internet explorer opens in windows media player, games, programs etc. The things i attempted to do were to fix the file extension in association window (one of the few things i can open) as well as shift right click fo rthe option "Open With.." both the .exe extension aswell as the open with option were not present. The file types for these programs have turned in WMP file types. I have no idea how to fix this or use anything other then explorer, im even having a hard time using online virus scans, most likely im guessing due to the problem with dling updates for it to my comp. Can anyone suggest a way to fix this problem so i can use my programs and change it so it opens and not in WMP?

I have Windows XP and have been running around in circles trying to convert some .flv files. I even purchased the Total Video Converter, a $45 product which hasn't helped. I am trying to email this .flv file, but I don't know how to open it nor convert it once I do. I thought I needed to open it with a .flv friendly program so that I could convert the extension using my Video Converter. So I downloaded Adobe's Macromedia Flash Player - that didn't work, so I downloaded FLV Player but I can't seem to find it in my program list. I'm so frustrated. Any suggestions?

OH YEAH!! I'm running Internet Expolorer as my browser.

I've converted a few with this app. Note if one encoder doesn't work try another. I think I used ffmpeg.

It's a tough page to negotiate. You want Super , can be hard to download.

Well, there are > 500 "regular" file extensions; > 5,000 total in the HKCR Registry key. A partial list is below.

To get a listing from your own system -
START | type cmd.exe | RIGHT-click on cmd.exe | "Run as Administrator" | Paste -

Code:

reg query hkcr /f "." /k > "%temp%\1" & start notepad "%temp%\1"

A notepad will open w/ the results.

The problem is, for both registry keys it says to change, the "NoFileAssociate" is missing for both of them. How do I get it back? Thanks.

Hello, My computer is having some hardware issues and I sent to a repair shop and they fixed it. Not sure if this is going to last long and I was looking to extend my HP warranty but I am unable to do so. Will HP repair my laptop if is stops working even though an unathorized repair shop has fixed this laptop before? Please let me know. Also if I could extent the warranty of this 2012 edition laptop please send me the link. Thanks a lot!

A:HP Hardware problems and Warranty Extension

#HPExpertDayYou may not be able to extend the warranty of product bought in 2012.If you already have a extended warranty and if an issue is not with the part the service center replaced/worked on then the extended warranty might work and again depends on the type of extended warranty.

Hi all,
I have an older generic computer running XP Home. A few days ago I was working in Corel Draw and started having lots of weird problems. The screen started jumping around and zooming in and out. The mouse started jumping around and freezing up. I thought somehow the program was corrupted and began searching on line for what was happening. Then I noticed the screen kept jumping to the bottom of the page while on line. Then last night the mouse went crazy and just started clicking all around and opened about 8 programs in 10 seconds. I tried to close the windows and they wouldn't close. The task manager would not come up so I turned off the computer. After 30 minutes I turned it on and it looked like it was booting up in safe mode but it wasn't. The characters on the screen were all scrambled and the black screen had random color streaks in it. I turned the computer off again and waited about 5 minutes and turned it on again. It seemed to boot up normally.
I have AVG installed and it scans every night. The history shows no problems. I opened Corel Draw and the tool bar jumped to a new location without me clicking on it and another tool bar disappeared. When I use MS Word it freezes up. While typing this post, the screen jumped to the bottom of the page and I had to scroll up. And randomly the right click window pops up when I have not clicked anything. I really don't know if this is a hardware problem, software problem, spyware problem and don't know whe... Read more

Also, due to the power of this tool it is strongly advised that you do not attempt to act upon any of the information displayed by ComboFix without supervision from someone who has been properly trained. If you do so, it may lead to problems with the normal functionality of your computer. It should also be noted that when you run ComboFix it will automatically delete files from the following locations: Windows Recycle BinTemporary Internet FilesTemp Folder

So I am losing my mind over my computer this week, It all started on Thursday. All four of my Virus scan softwares (Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes, AVG and Spyware doctor) which i run on a daily basis found numerous threats and infections. My computer was running very slow and there were many pop ups, plus I had to download Malwarebytes again becuase there was a problem with mbam.exe. As of Saturday night after running numerous scans with all the programs things started to look better, my computer was running normally and the scans were not picking up any viruses. Then on Sunday morning the scans picked up a few more trojans in System Volume Information. I have seen these before and knew that if you turn off system restore then it will get rid of them, yet when I tried the system restore tab was missing. I checked the services list and system restore was listed at started. I then read that if you change the name of system volume information i could solve my problem. When I right clicked on System Volume Information it said I couldn't rename it, access denied. I was also denied access when I just tried to open the folder, even though I am an administrator (guest login is turned off). I still have some of the threats quarentined that are from SVI, should I release them?I also noticed that I could no longer go into safe mode. I tried to go into to safe mode to scan for viruses as well, but each time i tried a message popped up saying "We are sorry! if the computer was... Read more

A:Lots of problems!! I don't know what to do!!

To find your System Restore, go to the partition where you install the OS, click it and go to the folder that says Windows.
Open it and go to system32, click it go to Restore again open it and you will see "rstrui.exe" that is an application.
Double click it and you are are in the System Restore.
Good luck and tell something.

My system is full of spyware and other viruses, its an outdated system with a 40gb hard drive, 1.8ghz processor and 512 mb ram. My hidden files are not visible (i've tried folder options and all) and my D drive (on which I've installed XP SP2) is always out of space, I've hardly got 378 megs on it, its a roughly 10gb partition but the fact is that i have not got anything of that size on it. I deleted some files and moved other files of like 700 mb but in vain, whatever i do there just isn't any space left. Also i can't open my hard drive partitions by double clicking on them it gives me the "open with" dialog box. And i once installed a bluesoliel bluetooth usb dongle with my system, but after some time bluesoliel started hanging up and slowing my pc, so i uninstalled it but now whenever i start the system the, a found new harware wizard starts up saying that it has detected the bluetooth dongle, but it isn't even connected to it. My system takes a lot of time to start and the date is always set to 9th octber 2002. And there are like 5 svchost.exe running. The registry is all wrong and when i open startup in msconfig it shows me some programs which i have uninstalled a long time back. When i open add remove programs it says that there is a yahoo address auto complete but it doesn't get removed.

Please help me and recommend some authentic anti virus and antispyware program that i could install.

Hi there. I'm trying to get my dad's laptop back to "normal" working condition. It's less than a year old - Dell studio 1737 running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2. Processor reads: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 2.53 GHz with 4GB Ram and 64-bit OS.

Dad is a "clicker" - meaning he clicks on anything and everything. I'm trying to break him of that, but so far...well...he's having a lot of issues. I have no idea what he's downloaded. My brother *thinks* he fixed it by downloading other junk that didn't work, and now it's worse than before. It's running quite slow, IE closes on itself nearly every time you open it, random pop-ups when you navigate away from the homepage, etc. We use Dell Remote Access when he's away from home in case we run into something I can't talk him through - but we've had a ton of trouble with it and now we can't uninstall it - it gets hung up. I've tried to repair it with no luck, either. Last night I ran AdAware...and now I'm here. You've been so helpful in the past. Any ideas?!

There is also a dell backup thing I don't know what is for. It asks every day if he wants to backup - sometimes he says yes, sometimes no. Is it necessary?? Seems like a lot of wasted space. I have a large iomega external drive I back up his machine on every 3 months...

Oh - I also moved 90GB of movies he shot for his business last night to free up some space - but he has a... Read more

I have a laptop with XP Pro SP3 and up until last night its been running fine. Last night I turned on a movie and I got blue screened. So I turned it back on and started the movie again. Fifteen minutes into it I heard the windows error sound and my computer restarted on its own. Again I turned it on and played the movie. It finally finished and I went to sleep. When I woke up this morning I had a windows bubble that said my computer was infected with spyware. It said to click to fix it, so I did. Nothing happened. So I go to do a virus scan and find out my anti-virus software (McAfee) is disabled and won't enable. So I do a scan with adaware and it find nothing. I do a scan with McAfee and my computer restarts in the middle. When it turns back on, it takes about 5 or 6 mins to boot (it normally takes one or two at most). I download HJT to try to post a log but it won't open, even in safe mode. I tried to do a system restore but apparently it deleted all my restore points up to about an hour ago, so I can't even do that. I have no idea what do do, please help.

Here is a list...

- When I boot it asks for a username/password, and I have none, so I just hit "OK" and it logs me in (minor problem but annoying)

- When I try to restart, it shows XP as restarting but I must manually restart (press the restart button). However, the computer will freeze if I do that, so I must actually cut the power to the computer, and hit the start button to actually make it work. (This is a major problem)

- The computer is unable to install Flash player. (major problem)

- The computer freezes randomly.

What I have done...

Virus scans...

Updated the BIOS

I really need some help here, this is my parents PC, I use OS X and Ubuntu, (I haven't looked at XP in about 1.5 years) I barely have time to look at it, so a fresh OS install would be tough.

I truly appreciate all of the help I get.

Hello,You don't have even an antivirus or a firewall installed on your system. That is very risky!First of all, disable your spysweeper, because it can interfere with the fixes. When you enable it again, make sure you allow everything in your spysweeper, because those are the changes you made yourself, so don't let spysweeper block it again.* Uninstall Media Access via add/remove programs.Reboot.* Download: HosterUnzip hoster to an own folder, eg C:\Hoster Start Hoster.exe, click 'Restore Original Hosts' and click OK. * Perform an onlinescan with housecall and/or Etrust and let it delete everything it is finding.Download http://www.trojaner-info.de/cgi-bin/downlo...gi?file=sphjfixUnzip it to your desktop.Start SpSeHjfix and click "Start disinfection"Let it finish the job.Restore your websettings: Go to start > controlpanel > Internetoptions > Tab Programs.Click: "Restore Websettings"When done, post a new hijackthislog together with the log that SpSeHjfix produced. Before we get started, I'd just like to say that my computer is really messed up. Just recently i think my router messed up, because the internet is now only accessible on this computer, and not on the other one connected with it. (Yes, I've tried many many ways to fix that.) To add on to that, the internet on this computer is considerably slowed. Also, I am pretty sure that i have a browser hijacker. I can't click a link on google without getting redirected to '101links.com' or something like that.

Other problems include applications disconnecting themselves (exiting without my permission?), greyed out display options, and the inability to access my windows firewall. (The application tells me that I do not have the permission, or that 'due to an unexplainable problem' I can't access it.)

After many virus scans, nothing has been found, besides the everyday deletions and such. There is nothing much else I can think of doing, so I have attached extra.txt. Hopefully you can help.

Without further adieu:

It just very slowly (if at all) opens, and when you hit analyze it just sits there until the windows message (end program, program is not responding) comes up. The computer boot up time also feels like it has at least doubled. Does anybody know if doubling your memory could create these problems or it is service pack 2? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have always loved my computer, but now it has become a pain in the neck. --------------------------------------Thanks, TJW

i've always had some hardware problems, my computer tends to lock up a lot randomly. even if i'm running only one program sometimes it'll freeze.
but lately a few of my programs have been acting strange on start-up. my firefox does not stay still the screen it jumps around as if im scrolling when i'm not. my trillian contact list won't come up. i've tried re-installing but it doesn't help. i'm not really sure whether i need to troubleshoot these programs (and how to do that) or do something with my computer. i have good antivirus software and adware. do you think i should reformat my hard drive?

Do you really mean always? Like since you've owned it it's never worked quite right? Or is this something that developed over time and is now really prominent? Or did it all start suddenly after working well for a while?

I have recently done a clean install of Windows 10 and everything seemed to be fine. However, today I am getting lots of problems. I keep getting little windows popping up saying that an 'update is recommended' for Media Downloader. I am also getting lots of sites opening up that I do not want (a nude woman on the last one). More importantly in the last half hour or so a message appeared accompanied by a voice telling me to ring a number urgently as there was a potential virus found on my computer and that serious security vulnerabilities have been found and that I should call 0800-011-9684.

Can anyone throw any light on these please. Should I be relying on the W10 virus software or should I be going for AVG Free which I have always used previously. Also, do I need malwarebytes again, which I have also used before.

Would I be better going back to 8.1 or stick with 10 and do another clean install, to clean things up again.

Just to keep you abreast of my profile, I am a 75 year old who is reasonable in the use of a pc but not brilliant.

Thanks for any help.

Sounds like you have a malware problem. I would start by deleting all browser history and temporary files using the browser options. Then run Windows disk cleanup, then run CCleaner disk cleanup.

CCleaner - Free Download - Piriform

If that doesn't get rid of it then go to Malwarebytes scanning.

I use Firefox browser almost exclusively and first thing I do is install ADBlock Plus. In addition to keeping my websites nice and clean with most advertisements gone, I believe this also helps protect me from malware disguised as advertising. Biggest thing you can do, really, is making sure you know exactly what you are clicking on before you click on it - especially when installing software - always look at exactly what EULA you are agreeing to and always check out the custom install options. Those are the places when installing software that you can deny installing unwanted add-ons.

I don't run any additional anti-virus/anti-malware software other than Windows Defender and I get the small annoying malware about once a year that usually deleting temporary internet files gets rid of. To be honest, I'm not all that careful what websites I visit either. But, I also have my browsers set to clear history on exit so nothing temporary hangs around for very long.
