Have been using Zone alarm, but may go to Comodo

I use primarily Firefox and keep current with updates. I try to scan my computer, a desktop put together for me by a family member, once a week. They installed McAfee Professional, but the rest is free stuff: SpyBot Search and Destroy, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SUPERAntispyware, Defraggler ( at least once a month ), No Script, Abine, and similar - all freeware. Oh yes, CCleaner. They do not seem to interfere with each other.

The problems are this. I have several Firefox Extensions and I think some of these are causing trouble. I ran Firefox in safe mode after disabling all extensions. This helped, but I think there may be Profile problems, too. I've had trouble getting good directions for fixing that. Mozilla is crashing a lot. Running in safe mode is much better, but it still crashes or turns white.

Plus, I'm starting to have trouble running security scans from the programs listed above. The above register a fair amount of adware. That's one reason I went to No Script, which seems to help a lot. Just today, I had trouble logging into my one Yahoo account. Password didn't work. And I couldn't seem to get the help from Yahoo I needed. So, I suspect something is in there eating, too, but I have no idea what it is and have not been able to find it. Firefox is getting more unstable, so I'm trying to find out what extensions may be causing problems and if possibly the Profile needs to be looked at. I really need help. I do not know how to get rid of whatever HiJack finds either.

I have attached a log of HiJackThis

Thanks, Desert_gold

Preferred Solution: Lots of problems - maybe malware, profile and extension problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, my name's Katie and I'm having major virus/spyware,adware,malware removal issues! I

have a lot of different things going on here, and can't make any sense of it. I tried

following other people's solved threads, but they didn't solve my issues, so I guess I need

personalized help. I have Windows security running (well, I usually do when it's working

properly,) and I run Ad-Aware and Spybot regularly, but it appears that they cannot solve

my issue. Anyway, here's a list of things that have been happening to my computer since the

virus happened...

1. I KNOW the virus was contracted in AIM. An IM came in from a friend with only a link. It

didn't look suspicious to me, so I clicked it, and all of a sudden I had IMEd everyone in

my buddy list the link, and received about a million IMs back (didn't have time to read

them before My Computer's virtual memory ran out and crashed AIM on me.

2.When the computer starts up, sometimes a default background appears before the logon

screen with the user accounts appears.

3.After logon, the same thing in general happens every time. Spybot comes up with a bunch

of messages saying that there is a registry change to my homepage or something else

happening. I deny it, and it denies it over and over again to seemingly no avail. A .txt

file appears on the desktop. I have never opened this file, don't know what it is, and

delete it every time. My homepage is con... Read more

I don't see any anti-virus software running unless the SpySweeper is providing that.
Download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.

Close any open browsers.
If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTScanIt, allow it to run.
Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
Under Additional Scans put a check in the box for Disabled MS Config Items
Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
Save that notepad file
Please post the resulting log here as an attachment.
Click on the blue Reply button
scroll down to Manage Attachments
Click in the box that says Upload File from your Computer
Click the Browse... button and find the file then click open
Click the Upload button
Wait until you see Current Attachment and your file name
Click on Close this window
Then submit the reply.

Hi,

My son (i'm using his account at his direction) has been a member for a while and has used these forums for lots of help; just wanted to say thank you in advance as he told me he was very impressed with the help that he has received in the past. With that said, my laptop his been acting very strange. I told my son I was having "issues" and he suggested that I start by getting malwarebytes anti-malware, run it, and go from there. I did as he told me and am still having problems. I'm having all kinds of obviously fake warnings pop up, one in particular is XP Internet Security (others include google searches being redirected and homepages being changed). I'm not sure if i'm posting in the right place (if not, sorry), but can you help? Where do I start and what do I need to do?

Thank you again in advance
Cathy

My laptop has been infected with several different types of malware over the past few weeks and I cannot get rid of any of it. Here are the symptoms:

PC boots up as normal into Windows, then runs slowly. An error message comes up saying that Google Installer has encountered a problem and needs to close etc.

I have tried to run Spybot - Search & Destroy but it will not actually run - Task Manager shows the process as running but nothing actually happens. I have also tried to install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from the .exe on my desktop but again this will not install - the hour glass appears for a second then disappears.

Here is the HJT log that I have just run:

I have been using AVG free for the most part and recently I have been receiving a message stating that:

Application cannot run due to an error while verifying its electronic certificate.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled AVG several times only to see the error message repeat the second I reinstall it. I even went so far as to completely wipe my hard drive, delete the partition using windows setup and reinstall Windows XP, only to find the same error message once I got Windows and AVG reinstalled. I am really afraid that there might be a Worm or a piece of malware on my computer that is attacking an anti-virus system file. I have tried a myriad of different anti-virus programs only to receive various different error messages telling me that their system files have been hijacked. Can someone please help me. Ok, I'm just happy I was able to get onto this website. Just to start off, I have Windows Vista Home Premium. So basically, a day or two ago I started getting an error message saying that "Host Process for Windows Services has stopped working". When I clicked "Check online for solutions" it wouldn't connect me to the Internet and said the page couldn't be displayed every time I tried. I don't know if any of this is related, but here's what has happened:-My computer was really slow yesteday morning and still today. Hi This is my first time posting, and I have a lot of things causing problems with my computer, but to start off, here are my specs.

Windows 10 Pro
Intel Core i7-4770s CPU @ 3.10GHz
8 Gb Ram Corsaire Vengence 4x2
64 Bit
AMD Radeon HD 7700 GDDR5 1Gb (two of them w/ crossfire)
2 Tb 7200 Rpm Seagate HDD
z87-g45 Gaming Motherboard
Case: r5 Gaming Full size case
Power Supply: Corsair AX860
Fans: Rosewill Hyper Silence CPU fan, 2 stock front fans, 1 stock in back

So, to start off, I built this computer myself 2 years ago, and it has been running steadily without too many problems along the way, but earlier last year it began to have some much bigger problems.

Issue 1. Monitor Issues
I say this is a monitor issue, but i really doubt it has anything to do with the monitors them selves. What is happening every once in a while (about 3 times a week) the screens of my monitors will cut to black (it doesn't matter what I'm doing) and stay black for a few seconds before revealing the task bar at the bottom of the screen, and then the rest of my desktop slowly reveals itself. I've tried updating my video card drivers, but that hasn't helped.

Issue 2. Keyboard and Mouse Become unresponsive (System isn't frozen however)
Sometimes if I leave my pc idling in the lock screen, the keyboard will stop working, and when I come back, I can't log in. I can tell my computer is not frozen because the slideshow in the lock screen keeps moving and I can move my mouse (bu... Read more

Hi,

I sure need help  --- I do not know how to deal with viruses, trojans, spyware, etc.

My husband and I were traveling. We had to use public Wifi places to check our email on our laptop. when we got home and checked our email accounts on our laptops, we found some really weird looking email messages. I 'think' my husband opened one that had his name in the Subject line, but we deleted all he other ones that looked strange. We did not open those emails, just deleted them.

Now all 3 of our computers are doing really weird things. I have run scan after scan after scan, both downloaded one and online ones. Sometimes they find problems and fix them. sometimes the scans find nothing. Yet our problems just seem to be getting worse and worse. I DESPERATELY need a lot of help.

I know it would be very confusing to try to work on all 3 of our computers at once so maybe we can start with my husband's desktop computer.

I am currently running Avast on it and it has been running for hours. It is find TONS of things like these ----

"...is infected by win32:Funweb-K [Pup}"

"...is infected by JS: ScriptIP-inf [Trj}

etc, etc, etc.

I have very little knowledge of how to fix a computer problem and no idea what to do. And I have absolutely NO idea how our desktops became infected from our lap top.

Is anyone willing to help me? I know it is bad and will probably take a long time to fix, but I need help... Read more

Ok, I have lots of XP problems:

Can't open My computer from the desktop, the computer just locks up whilst attempting to open it, showing me the animated torch, saying it is looking for files.

The computer is running really slow, locking up and crashing programs for no apparent reason.

Cant access the drop down box (shortcut key F4) in windows explorer/applications/anywhere.

Internet explorer refuses to do anything if I type a web address without the http:// into the address box. It worked before, but now it isn't for some reason.

Finally, when I restart windows, it locks up for anything up to 5 minutes when it comes back up. The windows bar with the start button on, when I pass my mouse over it, the pointer turns to an hourglass and I am unable to do anything unti it sorts itself out.

I have tried running several anti virus programs, including AVG, Mcafee and Norton. Only AVG came up with a virus, 'Dialler'. I cleared this and it didn't make any difference. I alos tried system restore from several points, but each time it told me that it was unable to restore.

If ANYONE can give me any help at all, I would be extremely grateful.

Yours,

Wayne Donnelly.

Hi again

My friend, using Windows XP is having problems with .csh appearing when using Nuendo 2 / 3 - he cannot save any recordings. In addition, the internet crashes, programs cannot be opened, are slow or crash and he has to re-start his PC a hundred times a day.

He has tried to run AVG but it gets stuck in one place and he has to abort it.

Timeline :

- 2 weeks ago he changed from mobile to fixed line internet
- 2 weeks ago he downloaded a program which contained .zip files (not normally a problem)
- last week he downloaded Adobe Acrobat Reader 11 (free version)

His technician insists there is nothing wrong, but he has now been to him 4 or 5 times and there is something very wrong !

Any ideas please - our mutual work has come to a standstill

Thanks

Have you checked if this is in every folder or just one?

Can you also try to change the setting back to default. Restart and then change it back to this again and see how it goes.

Hey, I'm new here, obviously.

I've got a should-be-very-simple question.

I'm using a program called Mobile6, it's an EPA issued program which calculates emission results for cars, etc.

anyway, the program uses a DOS interface and requires an input file with the extension ".IN"

this input file is always compiled in notepad. So, when I go to save the file, I save it as whatever.IN, not as .IN.txt or anything, but of course notepad adds its .txt extension. I can't get XP to stop associating it with notepad.

even if I change the folder options of that file to always open with Mobile6, it still thinks it's a .txt file. I've used another XP Pro PC where when you saved the file, it appeared as whatever.IN.txt and you could simply rename it and remove the .txt part, and then XP wouldn't associate it with any particular program. But alas, I don't have this ability with my pc.

Please help guys, this is driving me nuts!

thanks, Kevin

A:.txt extension problems

Under save as type: in he save as file option

instead of making it say Text Documents .txt
make it say all files.

Use the drop down menu to select all files. then save it as whatever.in

I have Windows XP and have been running around in circles trying to convert some .flv files. I even purchased the Total Video Converter, a $45 product which hasn't helped. I am trying to email this .flv file, but I don't know how to open it nor convert it once I do. I thought I needed to open it with a .flv friendly program so that I could convert the extension using my Video Converter. So I downloaded Adobe's Macromedia Flash Player - that didn't work, so I downloaded FLV Player but I can't seem to find it in my program list. I'm so frustrated. Any suggestions?

OH YEAH!! I'm running Internet Expolorer as my browser.

I've converted a few with this app. Note if one encoder doesn't work try another. I think I used ffmpeg.

It's a tough page to negotiate. You want Super , can be hard to download.

I am currently using Windows Vista and at some point when closing a window in Internet Explorer every .exe file extension changed to windows media player type files. and only open in WMP which in turn WMP cannot use, and says as much. Everything on my computer except internet explorer opens in windows media player, games, programs etc. The things i attempted to do were to fix the file extension in association window (one of the few things i can open) as well as shift right click fo rthe option "Open With.." both the .exe extension aswell as the open with option were not present. The file types for these programs have turned in WMP file types. I have no idea how to fix this or use anything other then explorer, im even having a hard time using online virus scans, most likely im guessing due to the problem with dling updates for it to my comp. Can anyone suggest a way to fix this problem so i can use my programs and change it so it opens and not in WMP?

Also if I could extent the warranty of this 2012 edition laptop please send me the link. Thanks a lot!

A:HP Hardware problems and Warranty Extension

#HPExpertDayYou may not be able to extend the warranty of product bought in 2012.If you already have a extended warranty and if an issue is not with the part the service center replaced/worked on then the extended warranty might work and again depends on the type of extended warranty.

Well, there are > 500 "regular" file extensions; > 5,000 total in the HKCR Registry key. A partial list is below.

To get a listing from your own system -
START | type cmd.exe | RIGHT-click on cmd.exe | "Run as Administrator" | Paste -

Code:

reg query hkcr /f "." /k > "%temp%\1" & start notepad "%temp%\1"

A notepad will open w/ the results.

The problem is similar to this:

Hi all,
I have an older generic computer running XP Home. A few days ago I was working in Corel Draw and started having lots of weird problems. The screen started jumping around and zooming in and out. The mouse started jumping around and freezing up. I thought somehow the program was corrupted and began searching on line for what was happening. Then I noticed the screen kept jumping to the bottom of the page while on line. Then last night the mouse went crazy and just started clicking all around and opened about 8 programs in 10 seconds. I tried to close the windows and they wouldn't close. The task manager would not come up so I turned off the computer. After 30 minutes I turned it on and it looked like it was booting up in safe mode but it wasn't. The characters on the screen were all scrambled and the black screen had random color streaks in it. I turned the computer off again and waited about 5 minutes and turned it on again. It seemed to boot up normally.
I have AVG installed and it scans every night. The history shows no problems. I opened Corel Draw and the tool bar jumped to a new location without me clicking on it and another tool bar disappeared. When I use MS Word it freezes up. While typing this post, the screen jumped to the bottom of the page and I had to scroll up. And randomly the right click window pops up when I have not clicked anything. I really don't know if this is a hardware problem, software problem, spyware problem and don't know whe... Read more

Also, due to the power of this tool it is strongly advised that you do not attempt to act upon any of the information displayed by ComboFix without supervision from someone who has been properly trained. First of all, my computer operation is Windows XP Home Edition.

This started last Friday, when I restarted the computer, and my brother logged in. They were lots of popups, and programs installed by itself. We uninstalled the programs, and deleted the adware with, a program called Ad Aware. Then, I use this Anti Virus program (not norton anti virus) to scan for viruses. They were viruses, but the dumb program couldn't delete it. I thought, I guess the computer is okay now....and my brother just went on the computer, without any problems. But then the next day, I logged in, the internet wasn't working. Then I checked the other computer,to see if the internet was working, and it was (we have two computers sharing a modem) So, I thought there must be a virus blocking the internet connection. But the dumb anti virus program we had, couldn't delete it. So, I got Norton Anti Virus 2004 from a friend, so on the other computer (With the internet working) I tried to copy norton anti virus to a blank cd. So,that didn't work. My friend did it for us on her computer. So we installed it, and restarted the computer. But when I tried to login, I couldn't because, about 50+ more viruses were on my computer! And they were all trying to load when I logged in. Like how my msn messenger always pops up and signs in when I log in..so when all 50+ viruses are trying to load, I can't do anything...my friend told me to put the norton anti virus internet security cd in an... Hi

I'm having problems with both my cdrom and cd burner. The cdrom is a 32x Mitsumi and the burner is a 2x Memorex(so slow). I'm running Win 98 sec ed. I have 128 megs of ram and a Pentium II 300mhz processor.

First, when I put a cd into the cdrom it takes forever before the disc is accessible and it may lock the rest of the computer up until it's done spinning up. However, it may never finish spinning up at which time you have to eject the disc to unlock the rest of the system. Also, when playing media files from it after a while it's starts playing back choppy. This only just started about a week ago.

Then there is the cd burner. Somewhat more stable then the cdrom when playing back but won't successfully burn a disc for anything. It will either burn the whole thing right up until the end and then blow out the disc while writing the table of contents or it will blow the disc within the first couple of minutes or lastly, the software will just lock. I've tried both Nti and Adaptec with no luck. I get maybe one out of twelve cds burned successfully.

I spent all last night doing scandisks and defrags to make sure the problem wasn't any rogue proggies running in background. I shut off all background tasks. Used Tweak All to free up 3/4 of my memory(I think I have a bit of a memory leak on that system) and still blew out the disc. Like the cdrom, this is a fairly new problem. I've been using both drives for over a year with no trouble ... Read more

A:CD problems(and lots of them)

Did both drives start having problems at the same time? Nothing was done to either one before? If they BOTH went kooky, might be a connection problem. Are they IDE drives? Have you checked your cables?

I have an acer aspire 5020 laptop
I turned it on this morning but got this

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system
You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup cd-rom
select 'r' at the first screen to start repair

I found how to fix this and stuff, but another problem prevents me from doing it. my winxp cd just won't boot, I set up the boot order correctly, tried to select it from boot menu, but it just won't boot! I tried it on my other pc and it worked there perfectly
and + the dvd-rom seems not even trying to do smthing
the indicator just blinks every sec and then stops blinking
same does the HDD light when I turn on the laptop
I have no freakin idea, this is out of anything I have ever seen :(

It looks like your optical drive is defective on the laptop. Replace it and then try to boot from it with the XP disc.

I can login in to safemode with networking and use the internet fine except it won't let me go microsoft.com and other malware sites. I ran a full virus scan and it found a bunch of files infected by the trojanhorse and I deleted them. I started researching these problems and thats where I found this website. Hi,

First of all I am running Windows Vista and it is generally working just fine. However...

On a couple of occassions recently, my laptop hasn't started properly. Instead of a log in screen, a box comes up saying a log in error occured and instructs me to view the event viewer to see what the problem is. I did, and it's under the 'Critical' category and is called Kernel Power (event id 41). What does this mean? I do not have enough knowledge of this area, but I know that, apart from an old game I've installed that runs perfectly on my laptop, nothing else in the system has changed, so I don't know why this is happening.

I've noticed today that windows live doesn't automatically sign my in when I start my computer, and when I try to log in manually it tells me I have an error. I look up the error code on the windows live support page and it tells me there is something wrong with my date and time settings. The date and time settings are correct though, and I have done nothing to the system to change this. I hunt around on the net and some page tells me to go to the date and time settings and sync to time.windows.com, which I try and do but I'm told an error occured when trying to do so. Very helpful. My anti-virus programme tells me that my computer date and time settings must be wrong as the anti-virus database is newer than my current system date.

I'm also getting certification problems when I log into hotmail, which I&#... Read more

Hi,

My laptop has serious issue. Running XP home edition.

When i turn it on, none of the taskbars/icons load. Through task manager i can enter explorer.exe and get it to load.

From then i can't load certain programs, such as itunes, but others work fine such as labrokes (for poker). I tried to uninstall sophos but when i double click add/remove programs nothing loads. I downloaded AVG and installed that but again nothing loads when i double click the icon or try loading it through 'run'.

Not really sure what to do - i'm sure i have a virus but i can't load the virus scanner to remove it!

Hope you can help, thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I am fairly certain I have acquired some sort of Malware infestation. My computer is having all types of glitches, including nearly all the programs disappearing from my start menu. I have attached an HJT log and would be really appreciative for some advice.

Thanks!
Ryan

Additionally, my computer will just lag -- all processes grind to a halt and I can't even press CTRL+ALT+DELETE. And the most recent time I restarted my computer a handful of "ghost" icons appeared on the desktop -- there isn't much rhyme or reason to them either. Some are temp files, there is a .ini file, a shortcut to a program, and some word/excel documents. And also when I produced the HJT log and saved it a game booted up (this happened several times.) There is definitely something wonky going on.

Please help! Thanks so much!

I have a laptop with XP Pro SP3 and up until last night its been running fine. Last night I turned on a movie and I got blue screened. So I turned it back on and started the movie again. Fifteen minutes into it I heard the windows error sound and my computer restarted on its own. Again I turned it on and played the movie. It finally finished and I went to sleep. When I woke up this morning I had a windows bubble that said my computer was infected with spyware. It said to click to fix it, so I did. Nothing happened. So I go to do a virus scan and find out my anti-virus software (McAfee) is disabled and won't enable. So I do a scan with adaware and it find nothing. I do a scan with McAfee and my computer restarts in the middle. When it turns back on, it takes about 5 or 6 mins to boot (it normally takes one or two at most). I download HJT to try to post a log but it won't open, even in safe mode. I tried to do a system restore but apparently it deleted all my restore points up to about an hour ago, so I can't even do that. I have no idea what do do, please help.

Before posting my log, I have run an Ad-Aware scan. But, I am somehow unable to run a Trend Micro scan on my system. (Today only, as I ran one yesterday) I DID run a Panda free scan, which found 13 problems. Can I post my HijackThis log here without running the Trend Micro scan?
Thanks!

A:Lots of problems here!

Sure you can......whenever you're ready.

Here's the current instruction:

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Also, occuring towards online activity, online games will drop and simple web browsing will freeze.

While attempting the "5 step thread", Panda would freeze and dss would yeild a system error during the scan.

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis forum Braxton Please move HijackThis to a permanent folder on the hard drive such as C:\HJT. In the last few months I've been having alot of trouble with my computer.

First I started noticing slow loading times. For example, windows would load really slowly (it would be on the loading screen at startup for 5 minutes), installing programs would take at least five times as long as usual and it would take ages for my games to load. I scanned for viruses but there weren't any. I reformatted my PC and it seemed to fix the problem. However, after installing and playing a game (Call of Duty 4) for a few hours it started playing up again. Same problem; slow loading times. I reformatted once again. A:Lots of problems...

Start by testing memory:

MemScope (Floppy and CD images.)
Microsoft Memory Test (floppy or CD ISO image)
Memtest86

If you have enough memory sticks, you can test them by removing one at a time and see if the problem disappears.

If you are running Vista and can boot up, go to Start > Search and type:

mdsched.exe

Choose to run a memory diagnostic on next boot. Or, you can boot from the DVD and run it from there.
