Mouse pointer changing to a small black square with yellow vertical lines in it or as a thin vertical comb

Q: Mouse pointer changing to a small black square with yellow vertical lines in it or as a thin vertical comb

This problem has just occurred for me. I am only on a single screen 27" Mac, running Windows 10 on Bootcamp. I have had this computer form about 3 years. The problem does not exist on the Mac side of my computer - as always everything on the Mac side
runs spot on, its only over here on the Microsoft Windows side that I end up with issues. The only reason I use Microsoft Windows is to run Autodesk Inventor Professional for design and drawing. Inventor hasn't been written in Apple language as yet but I'd
wish they'd get their finger out and get it done. I dislike having to partition my drive and lose space because of a business biase. I also use the browser Edge to run tutorials on drawings. The cursor change only seems to occur after a period of non use -
initially I though it was after a timeout but I notice that the screen doesn't have to go to screen saver or blank-out for the change to occur, only a certain period of non-use maybe 5-10 minutes. It would be nice to see so attention paid to this issue after
sooo mannnnny years of existence. I see this forum issue goes back to 2009. I have contacted Microsoft recently once so far without charge and was told to delete the mouse driver and allow the automatic reinstall to occur. This still hasn't resolved the problem.
I see your above work around of enabling a mouse trail as one of my alternatives otherwise it's a restart to rectify. I will log another call to Microsoft help in an endeavour to apply more weight to the issue. I hope everyone is logging the issue with them.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Windows XP, did all last updates, AVG Antivirus. Machine was working fine, downloaded special characters .pdf file, suddenly, eight vertical lines around cursor (no trails turned on), looked at wireless kybd, mouse controller and NUM Lock was ON. Turned it off. Right clicked to get to Control Panel to check mouse settings.

Monitor displayed "Going to sleep. Tried to reboot. Power light on steady, never saw it hit the HD (no LED activity) Old Dell OptiPlex 160L. 72GB HD I believe? Only 256MB of Ram but even with 5-6 Chrome tabs machine ran great.

So, not a big believer in coincidence but, did I lose the HD just at that moment? I have an OEM XP disc with Product Key and was going to attempt reload. CD LED was blinking as if being read but no "write activity" going on....

So, anyone have a solution or :sigh:, confirmation of HD dying? On another rig at the moment.

Thanks,

Rick

i don't think you can reinstall xp now, unless ms has the servers still up. come to think of it, they probably are since ms is still supporting xp for large business when they pay for it. the first thing you need to do is download a live linux distro, burn it to a cd or usb stick and boot into it, puppy is really good for this. this will let you gain access to the hd if you need to and see if everything else is working. you should be able to at least get the data, unless the hd is shot.

A:green and yellow vertical lines on screen

You'll need to test the monitor on another computer/laptop. If you don't have a second computer in the house, maybe try a neighbor or friend. If the problem follows the monitor make sure the cable is not faulty or exhibits the problem when flexed/bent near the ends or connectors. If that's not it than you simply need a new monitor. How old and what brand is your current monitor?

Just out of warranty(of course). Recently i noticed these moving bubbles(circles) that are gray and white translucent popping up on the left side of the screen and when they do mouse take on a life of its own and windows start opening and closing and all hec breaks loose like the laptop is possessed. then just as quickly it sometimes stops on its own- other times if i move the screen a bit forward or backward it stops.Other times thicker vertical bars show up along with the circular bubbles and again the laptop freaks out and windows open and close and shrink and enlarge without me even touching the mouse pad. All drivers are up to date-even bios and all win10 updates are fine as well. No new software added at the time or since the issue. It happens sometimes and not always. If i move the screen all the way back and put pressure on it the black likes will show up.Not always but sometimes. My feeling is this has something to do with the cable that connects the screen to the main part of the laptop but i just dont know how to get to it to maybe seat it better if it is the issue...if anyone has any ideas please do let me know.Thank you

On my 3 year old laptop (HP dvEnvy7), a very thin line of black pixels has showed up. The first time it showed up was on the red background login screen, and I think tapping the monitor made it go away, but that might've been coincidence. I just noticed it again in the same place where the color of the screen is green. I was running an MBAM scan while that showed up and the line went away, again I don't know whether that was coincidence. I've read that this problem could be caused "by the traces going bad in the video cable going from the LCD the the main board" due to the laptop lid opening and closing. The lid is getting a bit loose. Is this the answer or could there be something more malicious, as my paranoia comes back to haunt me?

A:Thin black/dead vertical pixel line

If it's a single pixel width from edge to edge, it will almost certainly be a fault inside the LCD panel itself. Individual pixel drive signals are not carried on the LVDS cable connecting the panel to the mainboard, as that would require thousands of individual conductors. So a "hard fault" such as a complete black column or line is usually due to a bad connection in a heat bonded loom inside the panel, or an intermittent line or column driver IC which are also integrated into the bonded loom matrix inside the panel. Pressing or tapping the screen/frame can commonly make the symptom come and go in its early phases.

With that said, odd line-like faults can be a result of poor contact on the LVDS cable connector(s), and dismantling enough to gain access to this and cleaning the contacts with alcohol can solve it.

It show different colored vertical lines. These keep on changing, when I turn display down and again up. Sometime it get fixed by this turning of display down & up. Sometime half display work properly with vertical lines on left half display. Someone if I play video, then it gets fixed in 20-30min. It also get fixed when I hold display support with some pressure(where display and laptop are connected). If i leave laptop on with these lines, the display comes for 3-5sec and again vertical lines are displayed. But the display work done after it get fixed. So what is the problem?

Hello all.
After being almost rudely ignored on two other forums about graphics cards, I decided to come back to you guys, even though you're not a website that specializes in graphics cards. Before I start, just to note - I've heard the problem I have can be caused by a hardware issue and not only Windows 7.

SO HERE'S THE DEAL:
I changed my good ol' perfectly functioning 4850 for a 6970. The first issues cam when my computer started shutting off randomly, I have now taken care of this problem and upgraded my 500W Stock Supply to a CM 750W Bronze. Unfortunately, there is another issue which is driving me so mad, I'm ready to through my entire PC setup out the window. The card is giving me the vertical lines problem. This is a well known problem for some 4850's (even though my old 4850 had no such problem) and for almost all 5000 series users. The problem is rumored to be caused either by a bad memory clock, voltage or fan speed setting, but I've spent about two hours messing around with those (both overclocking and underclocking) and have only gotten things worse - the vertical lines seem to be gone, but now my computer crashes with the much more unpleasant BLACK SCREEN. You game and then - BLACK SCREEN! What I've noticed is that the audio sometimes continues normally, but Alt+F4-ing and Ctrl+Alt+Del-ing doesn't do anything.

Right now I have reset everything (dirvers, card, OC settings) to default and I have no idea what to do.

Just a note - if I can't gat this fi... Read more

I own a Dell Inspiron 15 5559. This problem has been going on for about 12 days or so now. Every once in a while my laptop will flicker these colors of purple, black, and white. It seems to have gotten a bit worse lately. Here is an example of my problem in this video. I have updated my drivers, and run a diagnostics program from the DELL site. All leaving me with nothing. Saying no problems were detected.
I  do wonder if it's possible it could be an issue with my charger? I have been using a charger I had to order from amazon that didn't come with my laptop. I decided to order an extra one of the exact same to keep upstairs so I don't have to keep taking this charger everywhere with me. I'm not sure if that would be a cause or not.

A:Lap top flickering black, purple and white vertical lines.

Run the LCD built in self test (hold D through powerup).  If you don't see the artifacts, it means the screen is OK.
In that case, check and/or replace the wiring harness that runs between the mainboard and display panel.  If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.
If you DO see the fault on the LCD test, replace the screen.
While a third-party charger has its drawbacks (won't charge the battery), it won't cause the video artifacts.

Hello there, when I was playing on a game on Windows Xp (World of Warcraft) the screen froze and vertical lines appeared all over the screen. Then turned off after about 2 minutes. So I thought, "It must be overheated." So I left it for about half an hour, and turned it on. It's a hp computer so it said hp somthing somthing, there then was a black screen with a flashing _ . Then it went to Windows Xp loading screen as usual, but this time I noticed there were some lines going though the words "Windows Xp" after it'd finished loading the screen went black and nothing happned. However, the tower was still on. I also checked that there was no loose cabels, etc. All was fine. I left it and tried it this morning, still the same issue. I've read of simmilar cases on the internet like mine, and heard it could possibly be the video card, or just simply the monitor. Any help? I'm pondering what to do now.

I have tried updating my video drivers, removed and reconnected my video card to ensure proper seating, but I'm still unable to open my NVidia control panel. I have also tried using the second port on my video card to see if that would solve the issue to no avail.

Is there a way to test if this is my video card that just needs replaced, or if it is something entirely different? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

My new Windows 8 machine frequently, but not always, displays a split screen with vertical black lines after waking up. When I say split screen, I mean it appears that the screen has 'rolled' to the right, with the right third of the screen or so disappearing and rolling around to the left. I hope that makes sense.

Anyway, between the two issues, it renders the machine unusable. I can just about find the restart button, but it means I'm forced into it against my will.

Graphics driver up to date. (According to windows device driver)

Any ideas?

To be honest I?ve never heard about such issue. I think you are the first one who reports about that.
Maybe you should back-up all your data and reinstall OS using HDD recovery option.
After doing this you will have ?factory settings? again and test it if the same happen again.

For how long do you have this machine?

I can fix it tilting the screen at some angles or pressing on the bottom part of the plastic support.Warranty is over so I tried to open the screen and check the LCD cable, but it looks fine. What could be the problem? In this thread they say the issue was the screen, but they arrived to that solution through a convoluted path so I'm not sure that's the correct answer.Should I check the other end of the LCD cable? Or straight up order a new screen? Thanks for the help.

Hello all,

I have recently upgraded from 7 to 8. Have only one complaint - in 7 I used to be able to make my taskbar thin while in the vertical (LHS) of the screen, it was a bit hacky, you had to:

Set the taskbar to autohide
Stop the "desktop window manager session manager" service
Restart the service
Turn autohide off

I had written a batch file and just set it to run at start and it worked fine.

However it doesn't work in 8 and examining the list of services, it seems that desktop window manager session manager has disappeared. A quick look at the wiki page says that it now cannot be disabled and is running all the time.

Is there any way to do this in Win 8?

To clarify, I'm trying to get this:
Instead of this:
Any options considered!

Thanks in advance

A:Thin Vertical Taskbar

Right click taskbar - select properties. You will see taskbar location on screen box with dropdowns of bottom, left, right, and top. Select the position you wish it to be and click "apply". Taskbar will change to that position. Hope this is what you want. If you use small icons, it will be thin, I believe.

Hello, I had a very odd incident with my computer.

Specs:
FX-6300
ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0
Ripjaws Gskill 2x4GB
Rosewill Green Series 630W
Also have a Cooler Master 212 EVO for the CPU
R9 270x Gigabyte OC Edition

So I was playing a game called Gnomoria, which to my knowledge shouldn't be very taxing on a computer... When suddenly my screen went brown with vertical lines! I could still hear the music playing but it seemed my PC was frozen. I decided to then restart the computer. As windows booted up, I got the chime that signals you were moments away from logging only to get a screen that is black. I can move the cursor but thats its... nothing else works. I then restarted my computer again with the same problem. Finally, I restarted the computer again but in safe mode with networking and I got that to work. Beyond this point I am not very experienced when it comes to computers, though I did build this rig myself. I'm just wondering what went wrong, and how can I start to fix this problem. I was not overclocking at all, at temps right before the Brown Screen looked cool with the CPU at 40C and the GPU around 35-40C. I also posted this under graphics problems mostly because this issue probably is GPU related. I'm running on 3.12, or 3.9 drivers. Im not sure which one but I am running on older ones mainly because I was having Blue Screen issues about 2 months ago which was fixed thanks to this forum. I'm just not sure where to go from here, any help would be appreciated.

Hi there all,

I bought a Samsung R700 for my son 3 years ago. He has had so many problems with this machine and has had to spend hundreds of pounds on repairs/replacements. Jacks, batteries, chargers, overheating problems and now the latest problem.

I will explain as well as I can.

On start up he could put in his password but then after clicking, the screen is black with vertical broken lines right across the screen and nothing else happens.

He can use it in safe mode for basic internet connection. He backed up his files onto an external drive and then used the Samsung recovery disc to try to restore Windows etc. It didn't work. Still exactly as before.

I found out online that there have been defects with the NVidia graphics card he has, the 8400. I rolled back the driver to an earlier one and then managed to start up in normal mode but then all the critical error messages started coming up.

Hi,

Had IBM Thinkpad 600E fixed under warranty for faulty screen (which had ceased to work) - problem turned out to be faulty motherboard, and motherboard was replaced.
Since getting the laptop back, there is a thin (about 4mm) vertical grey band down the entire screen which obliterates whatever is behind it. This line is about a cm in from the left hand side.
the band comes on from start up...ie through the black POST screen, and if operating in DOS - the same. The correct drivers and refresh rates, etc were already loaded. OS is Win98SE.
Wondering if it could be caused by something simple like a loose cable?
The reason I'm asking is that I'm in Sydney & have to send the laptop back to Melbourne to be fixed....if it is something that has happened in transit, there's no point sending it back to have the same thing happen again. Any ideas much appreciated.
Thanks

A:Thin grey vertical band on laptop screen

That could be a physical flaw in the screen, but hopefully it's just a loosened connection in the wiring involved.

It probably did happen in transit, since the repair techs would have noticed and called you if they saw it.

You could have a local tech try to check the wiring first, but you'll probably have to send it to Melbourne again. If so, use a bigger box and ship it wrapped in something big and soft like a down-filled winter coat or quilt. You might also want to insure the parcel for the round trip if your postal system or courier company offers the option.

Hi there
If you are using an external TV type of monitor go into the menu of the Monitor -- usually via a remote controller etc. Somewhere in the Video / picture setups you should see an option like auto adjust picture / size or something like that -- then the image should fit the screen perfectly.

(Assuming of course that you have set the resolution (in the PC settings) of the monitor to one it can handle).

I've got a yellow vertical line down the middle of my laptop screen. From what I've read and the troubleshooting I've undertaken, the screen is failing and the problem is only going to get worse. I bought the computer in December 2014; it is less than a year and a half old. I am retired and use the computer a few times a week, never more than one hour at a time. I've never dropped the computer or abused it in any way and the computer has never been taken out of my house. I am appalled that a company like HP would produce such an inferior product. Are their products so crappy that an extended warranty should no longer be considered an option but a necesssity? There is no reason for this problem other than HP cares nothing about the products it makes. I want to contact an officer of the company and have found that this is impossibile to do. As a senior citizen on a fixed income, I cannot afford to have the computer fixed. Now what do I do?

Hello I understand your concern and my since apologies. Personally I wpuld suggest to visit support.hp.com and initiate a chat support or use our phone number. I am afraid, we can only provide repair options to those units in warranty, however you can expose your case and see if there is something else to be done. Good Luck!

Hello Every One
I have Windows 8 with Outlook 2007 as e-mail.
In the old XP days when ever I received e-mail with that annoying vertical line down the side of the page it was simple enough to get rid of them by using the instructions below. Now of course in this modern world things are different with tool bars turning into ribbons. When I open the e-mail there is no View.
Can some one, if it's possible convert the XP instructions below into Windows 8 please. arram.

Lets see if this helps: Open the email and click Forward: Now, click View on the Menu Bar: Now look for SOURCE at the bottom tab and click: Now look through the SOURCE CODE and find a selection that starts with something called <BLOCKQUOTE>Now, if there is one line in the email you should see it once. For each blue line you will see it listed. Highlight each line in the screenshot below and delete:

Have you tried this?

There is another way in Outlook to do this which is even easier. Outlook has keyboard shortcuts to “Clear Formatting”: CTRL+SHIFT+Z or CTRL+SPACEBAR. Either of these methods will remove the blue vertical line.

Yesterday while in the middle of playing a game Windows XP hung up. Upon reboot it came up with colored vertical lines. I cannot get it to reboot in safe mode or get into the setup screen. I have tried numerous times to restart and tap F8 however the computer starts up immediately with the colored vertical lines and no opportunity to get into any type of program.

I switched monitors to ensure that it wasn't a monitor issue, but same problem with the other monitor.....vertical lines that change color and pattern every couple of seconds.

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to TSG....

If this is a company computer I would suggest calling the company IT department to fix this, this would not only save you from getting into trouble but will save you from getting into trouble.

If you are getting video until it starts booting into Windows the problem sounds like a bum video driver but not being familiar with the specs on this particular computer or whether it is on a network or not it is just a guess.

arram, what are you using for email? You could just copy the text instead of forwarding the whole email.

Hi -

Try booting w/ "Last Known Good Configuration"

Also try "Enable VGA Mode"

If no-go on both, see if system restore helps -
START | type rstrui

I have vertical lines on both my laptops yellow, light green, and pink, I did let my norton virus protection run out Can you tell me how to fix this problem The screen just slowly keeps getting more lines

Jerry

I actually had that with a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop and I installed an updated video driver and restarted and the problem never came back. You could try that but if it doesnt work than most likely your screen has gone bad and will need to be replaced.

Discovered purple/blue vertical lines going down my laptop. At the very top the lines are very dark... as the line down down the line gets fainter and looks invisible but in some random spots there is some dark spots. Its probably about 10 pixels wide. The first time I turned it on it was a solid blue line all the way down but now it is blue and purple for the most part and varies in visibility through the day. Not sure if this is a video card issue or the LCD monitor. Any comments to fix or what is wrong is appreciated. Thanks!

A:Vertical Lines

I remember the day before they appeared I had my laptop closed but was still on sleeping for quite some time. Just did the same thing for a couple hours right now and went and checked on it and the lines appeared darker. Not sure if theres any correlation there but thought itd be worth nothing.

I have a fairly new DELL computer, with a 17" Microtek thin screen. For the past two days, I've been getting a vertical yellow strip, about 1-1/2 inches wide, about one third over from the left. It comes on as I boot up the computer. I have WindowsXP.

Why - and how can I get rid of it?

do you have any magnetic source close to the screen like a large speaker? are you using the native resolution setting 'cause if this is a lcd monitor they don't like to go higher or lower. does it stay on after booting up?

Hello fellow Windows 7 enthusiasts,

So I installed Windows 7 on my Toshiba Satellite P105-S6177 laptop a couple months ago and I love it, everything has been working great... up until now.

I have this vertical yellow line, 1 pixel wide, running from the top to the bottom of my screen, just to the right of the centerline. Here's an example of what it looks like:

It started out flashing on and off periodically, and I noticed that it had something to do with the white balance of the screen. On my black background it was appearing a lot less often than with a white browser window open. Although now, the damn thing is stuck on all the time. It does not appear on my post screen or on the Windows 7 loading screens, or when Windows 7 is booted in Safe Mode.

Things I have tried so far:
Rolling back my graphics driver to a previous version - no effect
Updating my graphics driver to the newest version - no effect

Do you have any ideas on how I might fix this?
