Laptop won’t start up

Q: Laptop won’t start up

Hello. I own Dell Vostro 5568. Earlier today i was surfing the internet and my laptop just shut down instantly just like that despite the fact that i had completed charging it like 30 minutes before. Seemed weird and i couldnt turn it back on. Then i connected the charger and i could turn it on. I just let it go. An hour later the same thing happened but now i cant turn it back on even with charger plugged in. Even holding the power button does not help. Please what can i do?

Preferred Solution: Laptop won’t start up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Koldys,Thanks for posting.Apologies that your computer is not working as expected.Have you tried taking the battery out and using the adapter plugged in? If it works, then it would indicate the battery has failed. If it still does not work, then the charging/power circuit is probably at fault. If that's the case, the motherboard would have to be replaced.

Big problem!

This morning, when i turned on my pc, everything was fine. Booted up as usual. Then later, when i had to shut it down, i accidently pressed the sleep mode button. PC did enter sleep mode and the power LED was blinking as it should. but i couldnt get it out of sleep.
So i was forced to do a hard shutdown.

I removed the power cable from the PSU, plugged it back in later. Started up PC and wow... the power light in the front panel didnt work. PC started tho... All fans working and after like 5 seconds the PC shut itself off and then started up again. Monitor got NO signal. PC sounded fine. No beeps or anything. Hard drive didnt start making the sound that its reading or looking for anything. I was forced to do another hard shutdown (hold the power button for 5sec) . I tried taking out RAM sticks. My keyboard is not getting any power. CD/DVD drive seems to be working. All cables and components are plugged in correctly. Most of the components are pretty new.

ASUS P5Q SE PLUS Motherboard (Less than a year old)
Club3d HD4850 (OC Edition) (1 Year old)
4GB ram (2x1GB 1x2GB) (1GB sticks are like 3 years old and 2GB like 2)
Xilence 580W PSU (Bought in the same time as GPU)
Vista Home Basic 32-bit

EDIT: I tried switching out the GPU. Same problem.

However, when I got to school this morning it wouldn?t turn on. When I press the power button, nothing happens. When I plug it in, the light that indicates that it?s charging doesn?t light up. I don?t know what to do. Please help.

I recently tried to reset my Lenovo flex 3 back to factory settings, which is about a year and a half old, and instead of resetting it froze. I tried to restart the laptop while it was frozen, which seemed like it worked, but after a couple minutes I saw that it wasn?t making it past the logo screen. It just continuously restarted itself up until the logo screen, blacked out, then started again. How can I get my computer up and running again???

When I start my computer, it says that probably because a change in the hardware or software Windows cant start. It shows the options to start in Safe Mode, Safe Mode in LAN, Last Known Good Configuration and Normal.
It wont start in any mode. After the Windows logo in black screen, it displays a blue screen that goes so fast I cant read it, and then starts the same all over again. I have to shut it down.
I can use Compaqs System Recovery, but it will erase all my files. (I dont have the CDs, but the program is installed in the computer)
In order to save my files I tried the following:
I installed my hard drive as slave in a different computer (to use it as a folder). I remembered to change the jumpers in both computers. The other computer wouldnt start with both drives installed, it goes as far as the Windows XP logo over the black screen, but before the blue Welcome screen it goes black. Completely black. Sadly black.
I really need to keep all my files (I know I shouldve backed up, but I didnt)
HELP !! What can I do?

A:Windows XP Home Edition won’t start in any mode

When putting the suspect drive into another machine you need to check a few things. Given that the error is happening on the other machine, I suspect that it is trying to boot off the damaged drive - have you set the jumpers to Pri/Sla or Cable select? I suspect that you have got the drives the on Cable Select and it's picking up the damaged one first. If this IS the case make sure the working drive is either jumpered as primary or is plugged into the END connector of the IDE cable (normally black connector).

If this is too obvious and all checks ok, then you need to check your BIOS - does the BIOS pick up both drives in (detection set to 'Auto'). If so, is your boot sequence correct - (IDE-0, CDROM, Floppy)? You may well have IDE-1 (which would be your secondary drive) as the primary boot drive in which case you will simply be replicating the errors you describe.

Check this first and let me know.

Best regards,

Hi guys, I REALLY need help with this one. I have never, in my nearly 20 years with PCs, seen anything like this.

First of all, this is about a totally updated, with all the newest drivers, etc etc - Win XP SP3, protected by an equally updated Kaspersky 09.
This morning I started up my PC and everything worked fine. Checked my email (only good ones from two friends, no virus or anything), turned off the system and went to university.

This evening I came back, started the system - and...

Well, Windows boots fine. I am on the desktop. All the icons are there, taskbar, etc - but I can?t open any folder, start NO programs, nothing works. I can open the start menu, go to each and every subfolder in there, but I can?t start anything. I can right click on the taskbar and see the settings, but I can?t right click on the desktop (or any of it?s icons).
So, I rebooted and made sure my CPU and RAM are still "there", because I thought that maybe the BIOS shat itself and it adjusted my CPU down or something - nope, every Hz of CPU and kb of RAM is still there.
Well, I CAN start taskmanager. It says that at system start up, explorer.exe is going around 90-100%. Then Kaspersky comes and they both switch around, always keeping the system at 100%. Then sooner or later both of them go down to normal values, going into mid-regions, but always dropping down again....but I can STILL not do anything with the system! If I kill explorer.exe, all the CPU usage drops to 1-2%, bu... Read more

Hello all,
I noticed about a month ago that sometimes when I wanted look at my pictures it would take a long time for windows photo gallery to open up. I thought my system was just running slow because it only happened in folders with big picture files. Now I can?t open any pictures with WPG and the program itself won?t open when I try to access it from the Programs folder. I can still access my pictures with other programs like IfranView or Adobe and I can edit them with Paint, so I?m pretty sure my pictures are ok. I think its with WPG itself.
I?ve also noticed that when I click on a picture to open it or even open a folder full of pictures a grey loading bar will appear in the file path near the top of the window. Eventually it will reach the end but then nothing happens. I?ve also noticed that sometimes the folder won?t display the thumbnails for some of the pics even after it has been open for several minutes. The other thumbnails will show up right away.
This leads me to think the problem may have something to do with how my system is searching or storing my files. However, since I can?t even open WPG I think this might be the real culprit. I did a little searching already and some people said they had a similar problem because they had a bad file type like a favorite inside. But I?ve moved each file one at a time into new folders and still have the problem. I?m thinking this is a software problem but here are my specs just in case. Thanks for reading.

Hello. I have Windows XP Home Edition, SP2 on two separate bootable hard drives in my Dell XPS B1000r. I have my 80 GB main hard drive and a 40 GB extra hard drive. I mainly boot from my main 80 GB hard drive, and thats the drive that wont boot after I changed the drive letter.

I wanted to rename the Drive letters associated with each of these hard drives. I was able to change the extra hard drive using the Disk Management option. I was not able to change the letter of my main hard drive, because I booted from it. I used Regedit to change the boot drive letter, based on the Microsoft Help & Support article:

I renamed the main 80 GB drive from F: to C:. I then renamed the extra 40 GB drive from I: to D:.

This wasnt a smart move on my part, because after I renamed the main bootable hard drive, Windows will not load on that drive. When I boot to my main drive, I get the Windows Welcome screen that hangs there for hours. When I force restart, I can boot onto the extra 40 GB hard drive, though.

Troubleshooting I tried:
I tried starting the main drive in Safe Mode, but it wont load. I also tried starting the main drive with Last Known Good Configuration, but get the same Welcome screen and it wont load any further.

I believe I need to get into my registry for the main drive. Can anyone help me to get back into the registry for this ma... Read more

Hi there,i just unpacked my laptop from a flight and now it suddenly doesn?t turn on anymore.when I press the power button nothing happens, no indicator leds, nothing. When I release the button I hear that thud noise you hear when you manually kill a laptop by keeping the button down. Now the weirdest thing: when I plug in the adaptor the fans start spinning like crazy, immediately when I plug it in, I don?t even need to push the power button.the same thing happens when the laptop is unplugged and I keep the power/reset button down for a longer time, the fans start spinning out of control but no leds, no nothing, and they immediately stop when I let go.If anyone has any clue how this could be or what to do please tell me. I will contact the seller on Monday (I have had this laptop for 2.5 years, thank god the insurance runs for three years) but as I?ve just moved to another country I?m not sure if that?s going to work out.Any help or suggestions appreciated.

My laptop had a problem with the hard drive (or so it seemed because it was unable to load up) What happened with the laptop was I tried to turn it on, the computer will load for a few seconds, then it will turn off. (So it never made even to the Windows logo screen).

My friend took it to the technician and the technician said it was a hard drive failure and needed to buy a new hard drive and install Windows onto it. The technician was going to charge $165 for new hard drive and Windows installation.

I thought $80 for a new hard drive than another $85 for a installation was overpriced. So I ordered the hard drive on my own and planned on replacing the hard drive myself.

So, I replaced the hard drive. What is going on now is that if I press the power button, I see the red light on the power button. Then in less than 5 seconds or so, the computer goes off. There is nothing on the screen during those 5 seconds.

This laptop is quite broken down, the CD Rom sometimes does not work. But regardless, with less than 5 seconds, it was quite hard to even eject the cd-rom. So I am not quite sure how am I supposed to go on and continue with the installation and such if the computer does not even turn itself on.

Now, is this really a hard drive problem or something else? Please help. Thank you very much in advance.

A:Laptop hard drive replaced, won’t boot up properly, shuts off in less than few second

$165 is actually a reasonable price.

If you remove the new drive, does it still shut down in 3 seconds?

My mother in law has a toshiba satellite p775-s7100 and this morning she told me there was a toshiba update, I was on her laptop yesterday and saw there was an update for her bios, so I'm assuming she clicked the update button and messed the update up somehow. Now when we try to boot the laptop, it'll go straight to the windows error recovery screen with the options to start normally or start the start up repair. Choosing start up repair loads the files and the bar fills up at the bottom of the screen, then the screen goes black with no mouse and it doesn't do anything else from there. Choosing to start windows normally starts the normal boot with the windows logo but as soon as it starts, it freezes there. It shows "Starting windows" And two of the dots that spin around to form the logo appear, but as soon as the two dots appear, that's when it freezes. She didn't completely break her laptop did she?

In some cases windows Recovery disks may help.

Here is the link for Windows 7 x86 edition :

Click the download button on the page and then burn the iso file to a Cd-r medium.

But if Win7 recovery cd is not of help ,in that case Live CD 's come to aid.

Here is the list of linux livecd's :

Linux | The LiveCD List

Booting via a livecd (free Linux distributions) needed files can be recovered and copied
to external mediums and system afterwards can be re-setup.

Linux livecd can be burned onto a dvd-r /cd-r disk or to an usb flash memory.USB is faster and better
of course.

Laptops like Toshiba have recovery partitions in many cases, and a special recovery
option is provided upon bootup.(F9 - F10 likewise..)

hope your problem gets solved.

The other day I was just surfing the web when all of a sudden my PC turned off without warning (the system had been on for some hours).
Thinking not much of it, I turned it back on again, continued using it and it has been running fine for the last few days, including running some intense programs, (rendering, etc).

Yesterday it happened again (whilst surfing), and now it wont turn back on.
Now Im not saying it definitely isnt the psu, although the psu is practically brand new (see my last problem). However the LED on the motherboard and LEDs on my peripherals (card reader, wireless keyboard receiver, etc) are all on.

If I power off and on via the switch on the back of the psu, and then press the on button, the power LED on the case will flash once, but after that nothing.

Ive tried unplugging all the drives from the psu to see if it will boot, but it still will not.

I'm thinking that the MB may be dead.
Any ideas?

Help! We have a 2 month old P51 and it shut off while on charger power and now won?t turn back on. It is still plugged into the charger but  none of the indicator lights are lit. i have checked all the connections and switched power outlets.Thoughts as to whether this could be an issue with the charger or the computer itself? Thanks in advance.

A:P51 won’t power on

First thing is when you plug in the charger, does the little THinkPad red led flash 3 times on the top ? If not, then the power block is not being recogized. Remove the power cable and the battery, press and hold the power button on the ThinkPad for 10 seconds. Then, before putting the battery back in, keep the lid closed. Plug in the power cable. Does the red led on the "i" of ThinkPad blink 3 times? If not, one of two things could be dead:  Either the powerpack (more common) or something inside the ThinkPad. I would strongly suggest that you find yourself another powerpack and see what happens...
