Default Printer Keeps changing

Q: Default Printer Keeps changing

Good Morning,

We recently got a new main printer for our office (we added it to our windows server 2012 print server), but we have one user that has a personal printer and doesn't want to use this printer. Every morning when she logs in her printer has defaulted to the
new printer, and I have to reset it to default to her personal printer.
I have checked and the printer isn't being pushed out by GPO to be the default, is there anything else we should look for?
I have also checked her event logs and don't see anything abnormal.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've noticed an issue happening with a few Windows 7 machines. They are all running Windows 7 Enterprise. Recently we had moved from a Server 2003 box to a Server 2008 R2 box as our print server. This issue seems to be happening on desktops that don't have
location-aware printing.
On the old print server, to deploy a printer we would go into print management, select the printer, then deploy via group policy. To my knowledge there's no way to define a default printer using that method(nor would I want to), and we're not using group
policy preferences to deploy these. What happens is every single day people will change their default printer to the printer they want only to find the next day it has changed back to something else (in our case it's usually CutePDF or XPS). This is getting
extremely annoying, is there any way to fix this?

A:Default printer keeps changing

I have found a way that has fixed this issue for everyone who is experiencing it at my company.
I had to go and edit the users registry hive:
HKEY_USERS\USERS_SID_HERE\Printers\Connections
I inevitably found old printer connections there that were no longer valid.  Upon clearing those out, after a reboot, the problem went away.
I also cleared out the HKEY_USERS\USERS_SID_HERE\Printers\Settings key - the users had old printer setting sin there also.

I am setting my default printer to a local printer. After a while it changes back to another printer that is for my other home office. There is no server. I just have 2 differnet printers (HP 7410, 7310) in two diffent locations. I want the 7310 to be the default all the time.
It changed in about 3 - 5 mins.
Any thoughts?

I have a default printer which is a network printer for 99% of my printing. However, I do use a local printer when printing checks.

I have the default set to the network printer and that is what I have set for the past several years through Windows 7 and now with my Windows 10 setup.

Since the latest November update, my computer keeps changing the default printer back to my local printer for no apparent reason and without notice. So when I go to print something, if I don't take care to check, I send it to print on my checks.

What is going on and how do I fix it?

Thanks.

A:My Default Printer keeps changing

Well, to answer my own question, I found a new setting that was set to "on". It says Let Windows Manage the Default Printer. When set to On, the default printer is the last printer used. It was on. I turned it off. (It is at the bottom of the Printers and Scanners Settings page.)

I assume this will take care of the problem.

Hey everyone

I'm having a problem with a coworker's printer. Every time he restarts his computer, the default changes from his local printer to one on the network. So far I have tried the following:

1. Delete the network printer. It just ended up adding itself again and making itself the default printer.
2. Make a start up script to change the default printer. Well, it didn't work and I'm guess its my script(just found one from googling).
3. Uninstalling and reinstalling the local print driver. Didn't work.

Right now I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out this problem

Anyone have any ideas?

So, I have several different printers set up for different wireless networks that I connect to; the only problem is that Windows never refreshes or updates my default printer when I connect to a different wireless network.

If I go into the "Manage default printers" and click the network and printer combination (stored in the saved list below) and then click "Update" it will successfully update my default printer to the one it should be. However, that's kind of a pain to have to go through several menus just to update my default printer--it would be faster to do it the old-fashioned way (right click the printer and click "set as default printer").

Any ideas on why this isn't updating correctly--I haven't yet seen it update since setting up my default printers. Or, should this go in a different topic than Networking & Sharing?

Thanks!

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I've never known Windows to change default printers when a network changes. There are utilities you can use that will do this, but nothing is built into Windows.

W10 has the ability to sync settings between devices and this is may be what is happening. In the screen below the Other Windows settings category does include printer settings so you could try turning it off and see if it makes a difference.

Hey all. I realize Windows 10 defaults to last printer used and you have to turn that off in settings. That solved my problem. However, since adding a new PC to my network and using a printer as a network printer, it seems to over ride the setting and keeps changing my default printer to the last used one. Its a tiny thermal printer so this is a huge pain .

Any advice? Again I've already set my default printer and switched the last used option to "off"

Also, the new PC is running on windows 10 but does not have the option to turn off last used printer as default.

I have been using Picasa to automatically import photos from my digital camera. I would prefer that not to happen anymore. I have stopped Picasa Media Detector from starting on startup but Picasa still opens automatically when I insert my cable from my camera to the my desktop (xp home).
What can I do to stop Picasa from behaving this way and having the default Windows program to import my photos?
Thank you for looking.

A:Changing the default photo program from Picasa to Windows default

If you get a mass storage drive letter when you connect your camera you can try connecting the camera so the drive letter is present, then right click on the drive and choose properties and in properties select the autoplay tab and specifically select an action for the type of files present such as open folder for viewing in windows explorer or whatever else is available.

If that doesn't work let us know, maybe media detector is running as a service and that needs to be shut down or something.

Help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand that Windows 10 has a new feature that automatically sets your effective default printer to the last device used (unless you explicitly turn OFF the "Let Windows manage my default printer" feature). I have turned this feature OFF (and checked that it is off a thousand times (slight exaggeration).

However Windows keeps moving my default printer to my DYMO label printer. Every other day when I do a Quick Print of a WORD document it prints to my DYMO label printer instead of the printer I have set as my default (Dell 2155 laser printer) -- and spits out multiple DYMO labels with the contents of my WORD doc.

I had experienced a similar problem on work PC when Windows 10 was first installed. Our IT folks searched for a solution for 2 weeks (and yes the new Windows feature was turned OFF) but after trying several fixes they gave up and did a clean re-install of Windows 10 which fixed the problem.

With this success at work with a clean install last weekend I bit the bullet and did a full clean C Drive format and full re-install of Windows 10 (including a re-format of my C drive) but the problem is back!

I wondered if Windows was missing my turned OFF feature however when I do a test of using the DYMO Printer it does not move the default printer to the DYMO -- so at the very least the problem is not caused everytime I print to the DYMO label printer. Also, when you turn ON the "Let Windows manage my default printer" the... Read more

I hooked up a printer to my grandmother's laptop. Everything installed fine and it is set to be the default printer. However, whenever we hit the print button in whatever program we're using an error message pops up and tells us that no default printer is selected. Furthermore, when I check the print dialog box the installed printer is selected in the drop down menu, but the print button in the same window refuses to light up. I'm guessing this might have to do with old drivers, but if not how do I get the printer to be recognized as default. The printer is a Lexmark x1270 and she's running Vista Home. Thanks all.

Hi Guys,

I'm getting quite frustrated with this issue and wondering if anyone has seen it, and able to resolve the issue. The issue is I have a network printer selected as the default in Windows 10. I have the option "Let Windows manage my default printer" turned off. At one point randomly, the default printer goes back to the Adobe PDF as the default.

Steps taken:

* I have checked the registry settings to ensure that the options "let Windows manage my default printer" is switched off. I can confirm this.
* Switched the default printer back to the network printer and performed a reboot. The network printer remains as the default. At some point of the day it goes back to Adobe PDF.
* Had a Microsoft support dude to look at the issue, but he has no idea either.

A few of my pilot users has also experience the same issue. Any ideas anyone?

I am having an annoing problem with shared printers.

The user that share a printer lose the default printer in any case when another user print on this shared and it turn immediatly default printer only for the user that share the printer.

The printer shared is a label printer without network port and all was working very well before this , in my opinion, unusefull improve.

All user have the " not manage default option" , win 10 pro but seems that "default option" do not effect at all with shared printers.

Hi,

I have an MX850 and an MX870 printer both connected to my LAN.

I also use an application called CD Label Print. When I started that program I noticed that there were 3 MX850 printers listed, the original and a (Copy 1) and (Copy 2).

So I went to devices and printers and saw there was a MX850 and a MX850 (Copy 2). No (Copy 1). So I removed the (Copy 2) printer and fax.

I went back to CD Label print and saw that it still said MX850 and MX850 (Copy 1).

Went back to devices and printers and sure enough, MX850 was gone and MX850 (Copy 1) was present. So I pressed F5. It changed to MX850. Press F5 again, it changed back to MX850 (Copy 1).

It changes non-stop. It alternates betweem the two settings every time I press F5.

How do I fix this?

oh, btw; I've tried uninstall re-install. I've also contacted Canon support who are dumbfounded. I also had to manually remove the registry entries and start menu entries because the canon uninstaller doesn't so it.

And.. I cannot use CD Label print. Each time I try to print a label it insists on asking where to save the file, rather than printing it.

thanks
Tanya

A:Printer name in Devices and printer keeps changing every few seconds

Found the solution...

For some bizarre reason the port assigned to both printers was FILE: God knows how that happened.

Once I set them to the correct ports that were created at install I could print properly and the alternating name in devices and printers stayed fixed.

Strange...

Thanks in advance,

A:Changing default TTL

Hi Ilir_R,

We can modify the registry value DefaultTTL using the following steps:
==================

1.    Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe).
2.    From the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following key:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters.
3.    In the right pane, add the following value:Name: DefaultTTLType: REG_DWORDValid Range: 1-255
4.    After that, please restart the computer and check the result.

Hope it helps.

After researching it more, I find this forum where people have been having the same problem. I understand I need to change my d-link's router to a different IP address so I can access settings but I don't know how.

Gmail has recently been VERY slow in responding and a message came up suggesting a few things to do if it continues. One of these brilliant suggestions was that my profile may be corrupted and proposed doing this to create a new profile:-
%USER PROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User data\Default

Then to rename the Default file to Backup Default. So simple and so stupid. I assumed that the new Default file would take over all the contents of the old Default file. WRONG ! It created a brand new file with nothing in it and re-invented the wheel. I ended up with a skeleton Chrome system with nothing there, all my old system was GONE !

A moment of panic, then common sense took over and I pit my humble brain against the idiot who suggested that insane measure.

I renamed the new Default to Default Backup and renamed the old Default from Backup Default back to Default. My old system came back immediately and all was normal again. It never cured the Gmail slow response, but I got my system fully restored.

Next move was a pleasure, I deleted the crap new renamed Default Backup file to the Recycle Bin and deleted it. I am now back to normal perfection and can only hope that imbecile who suggested that stupid thing to do is confined to the Funny Farm where he belongs.

A:Changing your Profile Default

Think of a possible cause of a problem;
test the hypothesis in a non-destructive way (which includes knowing how to get back to the original condition);
fix the problem if the cause was found or else resume with the original condition having eliminated one possible cause.

I've used that trouble shooting technique for computer related problems for at least 50 years. Since I am obviously also an "imbecile" could you inform me (in very simple terms, of course) what exactly is wrong with that technique, and why I should remove it from my tool box?

It's too bad you had the same slowness with the new profile, but at least now you know that profile corruption is not the cause. Or maybe it's not good to know that?

I have office 2013 and use outlook for my email. When I delete a message it goes into my trash folder and not my deleted folder. Plus the trash folder keeps only a few days of deleted emai9ls. How can I change outlook to send deleted items to the deleted folder and also keep them until I want to delete them. My sent folder also just keeps a few days of sent item. I want to keep items in all my folders until I delete them. How can I do this? Thanks much....

Hi,
I hope someone can help because I can not work this out!! I have a very small 64gb Solid State c drive on my pc but 2 huge 2TB HDD too.
Is there anyway of switching the default storage setting so that Windows 8 will not save anything further to my C drive such as Apps etc? I know its early days but I just can not get this problem sorted and while my C drive isn't too clogged up at the moment, I'm sure it wont be long!!
Thanks,
Mike

A:Changing Default Storage on Win 8

Well, you can't tell it to never store new files on your C: drive, but you can tell it to store some files elsewhere. To change Program Files (and Program Files (x86) in 64 bit versions) then open regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

In the right hand pane look for ProgramFilesDir and ProgramFilesDir (x86) and right click edit and change the locations.

Now, some older apps hard code writing their files to c:\ but most should be good citizens. Also, files that are installed to the system directory will always go to C:, no way to change that.

You can also change your Libraries to go to another location, by right clicking on those and editing them.

Hi Guys, new here and trying to do something which I find an answer to in the Windows Help system.

I have recently changed my wallpapers after finding software that allows me to display different images on my 2 monitors. When I did this I find a nice icon set that matches the style of the new wallpapers. I found out how to change the desktop icons via the Personalization setting, I have also changed the shortcut icons placed on my desktop for new ones. But when I go into folders I am faced with the default Windows icons which I hate and do not want any more.

Short of hacking the registry (which while capable, I am reluctant to do as I have never touched it before) - is there any way to change the default icons for the new ones I downloaded from VistaIcons? That site only tells you how to change the desktop ones sadly.

Also can I replace the "start" icon in the taskbar as well? As the icon set has a more modern version which I would rather see there.

IF anyone can help that would be great.

Thanks and heres hoping...

Max

Hi...Idiot here. Somehow I changed the background in windows and now everything is HUGE. I managed to find a browser to work and that is visually "ok." But everything in my computer is out of reach due to the size of all icons, fonts, etc. How can I get it changed back? I can't even get to system restore to go back to a restore point. Frustrated! When you all stop laughing, I sure would like some tips. Thanks.

Not sure what happened. Can you right click on an empty spot of the desktop - Screen Resolution - and change the resolution to something greater? For example, with 1080 x 720 everything on the screen will be smaller than with 800 x 600.

I am trying to open the help files that are associated with Corel Psp x6 but every time I click help, it tries to open Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver won't open and gives me a message saying it stopped working and has to close.
I tried opening the help files when Dreamweaver was already opened and got the message in my attached image.
I don't know how to change the default for this help file. I don't know what type of file it is and I don't see any options in my control panel for opening help files.

I'm trying to help an elderly friend solve a problem. She has a PC with WIN XP and is using AOL 9.0 as her ISP and browser. I am helping her only via phone, and am not very familiar with the AOL browser interface... thus I can't see what she sees, and I am limited in how well I can assist. I can't guide her to an icon on her toolbar, since I can't visualize it. She is a bright lady, but vision impaired and still intimidated by her computer.

We spent 3 hours today trying to find a way for her to change her default browser from AOL to IE. We spent most of that time on the AOL Help website... which , by the way, appears to be an oxymoron. AOL Help does not offer help, they offer only mysteries and frustration, especially when you are trying to choose something other than their own product. I found many clear instructions on how to change default browser from anything else to AOL... I found utter frustration in finding a way to change from AOL to IE.

Can anyone help me? BTW, I've verified that my friend has IE installed.

A:Changing default browser in AOL

Try this
click start
control panel
internet options (need to be in Classic View to see it)
choose the program tab at the top
under Default Web Browser it should say Internet Explorer is not currently the default web browser, next to it should be a button saying Make Default. Click it
click Apply

If your friend is using AOL as her ISP provider though, I believe she will still need to sign on though AOL before being able to use IE to surf the internet.

Let us know if this helps

Hi - Somehow, during surfing, I came across a website, that continually changes my default website to Iwantsearch, or something like that. I have restarted, gone to Windows update (why I don't know) and continually gone to internet options, to change it back to my original homepage.

How can I get rid of whatever is changing my default website? Thank you

Marilyn

A:Default Website keeps changing

Hi marilynmc11

Welcome to TSG!

I am moving your thread to the Security forum.
Please do this:

First create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This.

Now Click here to download Hijack This. Download and save the file to the Hijack This folder you just created.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

The log should open in notepad. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

Hi,
I have Win 98 on my PC with IE 6.0 as the default web-browser.

I also have Netscape 7.01 installed.

I wanted to make Netscape as my default browser and consulted this website for it http://www.smith.edu/its/tara/internet_browsers/default_browser.html

As epr the website I looked for the line....
user_pref("browser.wfe.ignore_def_check",true) ...to change its true parameter to false...

....in C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\gmjpq9ww.slt

....but I didn't find it there. The website says that the abscence of this line means that Netscape is your default browser.

But thats not the case for me.

Can anyone tell me what can I do do now to change my deafult browser to Netscape.

Thank you.

A:Changing default web-browser

Just open Netscape and go up to Edit and down to preferences.
When it it opens up the window you see look at the top right and click on the "set default browser" button.
Then click on OK. Close down netscape and open it again and it should be your default browser.
