T480s - unable to use "Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station"

Q: T480s - unable to use "Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station"

Hello, does anybody know if ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is compatible with T480s? I have installed all the drivers https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ie/en/products/accessory/docks/thinkpad-thunderbolt-3-dock/40ac/40ac013... I have searched this forums and followed some advice re BIOS settings for TB3 (didn't make any difference). Everytime I connect this dock the mesage comes up "Display connection may be limited".All it does it charges the laptop, but no USB devices work (mouse, keyboard), also Monitor connected through display port does not work. I replugged and restarted everything multiple times. I also updated all possible drivers for T80s (Win10 x64). Any ideas how to get this working, or are those products not compatible? Many thanks for assistance

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a T480s connected to a Think Pad Pro Docking Station with 2 4K monitors attached via Display Port.  One monitor I can set to 3840 x 2160 resolution but the 2nd monitor will not go higher than 1920 x 1080. I have checked the specs on the Docking Station (40AH) and it says that it can support two monitors at 4096 x 2160 at 60Hz so I do not think it is an issue with the docking station. Anyone have any ideas how I can fix this so that both monitors are showing 3840 x 2160?  Can the T480s support two 4K monitors even with the docking station? Thank you for your help.

I have a T440s presently with a T480s due for delivery this week - It seems that the docking platform for the T440s won't work with the T480s - correct?  I have looked for a similar dock for the T480S without success (though this doesn't always mean something isn't available, just impossible to find on the Lenovo website...)  Can anyone pont me to an Ultr Dock for the T480s - and/or confirm that the one for the T440s won't work?  Is the Thunderbolt 3 dock the closest I can get to the same functionality (without the usefulness of an actual docking base) for the T480?  Thanks for any assistance in advance.

HiI have a docking station pro and a T480s with windows 10.Probably since the last firmware update for the T480s (but this might not be related), my external monitor (display port) isn't recognized anymore (I have a Samsung 28 Zoll 4k monitor). I can only connect using the HDMI port from my T480s to connect.Any idea how to solve this issue? I updated everything today (Lenovo, Windows as well as drivers/firmware for docking station) but this didn't resolve the issue. CHeersRenger

Dear All, I am trying to use thunderbolt C to connect to two external monitors for a Lenovo T480s laptop. To do that, I used a Wavlink Thunderbolt C to dual display (HDMI) adapter (https://www.amazon.com/Wavlink-Thunderbolt-DisplayPort-Adapter-Converter/dp/B07CLLX6XS). While the adapter detects one of the monitor and works, it is unable to show the second monitor. The problem is that it detects only one monitor and cannot display in both of them. After reading several posts here, I disabled thunderbolt security from boot menu, restarted the laptop several times with and without the adapter connected. However, nothing seems to work !! Please suggest a possible solution and please let me know what will be the best low budget dual display dock/adapter for Lenovo T480s. Thanks!!Samik

Title says all I guess. Mouse and keyboard are not working though the dock (the new mechanical/thunderbolt kind) under the pre-installed windows as well as with ubuntu 18.04 alpha. The windows/Intel thunderbolt software does not show devices as well.I heard that I should've seen dialogs asking for permission to use the dock as  a trusted device of somekind. I have a T480s with a docking station, and everything works fine on a normal monitor. However, it does not detect the Apple iSight monitor at all through the docking station. The iSight has two plugs:  Thunderbolt 2 for display and USB-A for audio. I am using a USB-C (M) to Mini DisplayPort (F) adapter for the display since the T480s does not have a Thunderbolt 2 port. The audio was successfully connected, but the display is not detected at all. When I plug it into the laptop directly, everything works fine,  but it is an issue because the dock blocks the ports. Could it be that the adapter needs to be USB-C to Thunderbolt 2? But why would it work directly on the laptop? Problem with the dock port? Any solutions?

Hello I've went through fomrum and internet and I couldn't find a solution for my problem. I have Thinpkad T480s and Thinpad Ultra Docking Station (135W). I can't get latpop charing battery when attached to docking station. When power up/attache to dock I receive following error from Lenovo Hardware Settings:"Docking Station AC Power Problem: AC power is detached from your docking station. For proper battery charging and docking station operation, connect the AC Adapter for the docking station" So that is not possible since the docking station requires power to operate.  I do not know where to go with that - it looks like firmware error in docking station of some driver error in laptop. I've verified BIOS in the laptop and its newest possible. The same goes for docking station firmware. There is no airplane mode enabled. Any syggestions? Thanks in advance.

I am struggling with my docking station for my ThinkPad 480s.  I have two docking stations.  One by Lenovo type 40AJ and the other by DELL.  The dual monitor DP setup resets every 3 to 5 minutes causing the monitors to go black with the Lenovo UltraDocking Station.  So I switched out that docking station with the DELL universal docking station.  When I use the USB C/Thunderbolt port the same thing happens.  When I use the USB 3 port, I have no problems.  I have looked in the event viewer and I can see where the laptop switches from external to battery power, but nothing else.  Also, I have updated the drivers for Thunderbolt. Has anyone seen and resolved this issue?

Hello, So - the problem appears when you are trying to use external screen which one is connected to the docking station (there is only two DisPlay ports and no others dedicated to monitors). When you connect it first time - it's ok. But when you trying to un-dock and dock again - external screen says "no input" and goes down. In other words - external screen is not working. The same issue is described over there:https://support.lenovo.com/lt/en/solutions/ht081248 Mine docking station type is 40AH, but anyway, I tried to run ThinkPad Ultra Dock 135W firmware update - but update says "the firmware you are trying to install is older than the version already installed. My Docking Station: Power adapter is 135W. All drivers are up to date. Btw - I have many of those docking stations with machines. For some of them everything is fine. But seems the problem is with docking station. I have two docking stations on my desk right now. And my computer on one is working fine, but with other on - not. So, it's clear that the problem is with the docking station.

I have a 5th gen Carbon connected to the Lenovo Thunderbolt docking station. After some time, perhaps a sleep or hibernation, the laptop loses ethernet connectivity and can only use wifi. ipconfig reports media disconnected. But if I do a restart of Windows 10, ethernet is back, no problems. Also if I use the ethernet dongle connected to the laptop's weird little ethernet port, there are no issues.  There are other issues with the dock, like intermittent loss of wireless keyboard and mouse connectivity, but I'll worry about those in another thread.

Hopefully someone here can help me before I get an aneurysm. I got the HP Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station (150 watts, model number P5Q54AA). Everything is connected ok but as soon as the dock connects to my laptop it crashes my computer instantly and generates the blue screen of death. It doesn't matter if a monitor is connected or not. There was a couple of scary moments when it sent my fans into overdrive and started beeping loudly as if a bomb was ready to explode. I spent more than eight hours on this yesterday and at this point the dock seems like nothing more than a nice looking brick. I have went through all of the help threads here and tried everything. I updated the bios from 1.14 to 1.15I updated all audio drivers, graphic drivers, firmware drivers, chipset drivers, and thunderbolt related driversI rolled back everything twice and reinstalled everythingI removed the security setting in the bios that relates to thunderbolt devices connectingI've made numerous other changes that didn't work and had to roll backNothing seems to work. I am puzzled as to why HP haven't set this up better. Surely there needs to be a dedicated app for this that handles everything and installs and removes all necessary drivers. By the looks of it this docking station has been a mess from the start. What else can I do at this point?

It is possible you have a defective dock. I have exactly the same setup and went through some difficulties when I first got it but turning off Thunderbolt security made mine work. It is still occasionally finicky coming out of sleep mode or if I disconnect the laptop and use it as a laptop then try to reconnect the dock. Takes a restart or 2 sometimes but mine generally works well.  I would suggest your problems point to a bad piece of hardware.

Community: we just recently purchased a brand new Thinkpad X1 Extreme laptop and Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock. The Laptop is awesome but unfortunately we're on our second dicking station and wondering what we're doing wrong--or if we have a defect.  The docking station came with a 230W and 65W AC power cord, and the dock has both a 230W/170W port and 135W/65W power port. When the 230W cord is plugged into the 230W port, the dock doesn't turn on (nothing plugged in). When the 65W cord is plugged into the 135W/65W port, it lights up but no network when a laptop is plugged in or charge. The only way I get a light on the station is to plug the 230W cord into the 135W/65W port, and then when a laptop is plugged in I get network and charge. We contacted Lenovo and they sent a replacement as they admitted it was not working as it should. The second one also exhibits the exact same behavior and we are at a loss and ready to return for a refund.  I also don't want to plug a 230W power brick into a 135W/65W port for fear of overheating. Anyone else experience this or have any ideas, we'd like to hear them.  Thanks.

I have several Dell 5510 Precision series with the Thunderbolt USB-C adaptor. Each 5510 is plugged into a Dell K17A docking station powered by a Dell 130W power supply. When I connect the docking station via its USB-C connection to the 5510 laptop, I get a BIOS warning that it only sees 95W of the 130W. But the battery charges and the laptop runs. I can turn off the power warning in the BIOS (which is current) but I worry about powering the 5510's Nvidia video card and other components if the BIOS is not seeing all 130 watts.
Plugging in the 130W psu supplied with the laptop has no such BIOS error.
Why does the Dell docking station K17A not see the Dell power supply? Is it throttling it?

Hi!
I have a Latitude E7740 that runs Ubuntu Xenial (16.04). I dock it to a "Dell EURO2 Advanced E-port II" docking station.
If I boot it in the docking station, everything works fine, and I find all my two DVI-connected monitors.
However, if I undock, then put it into the dock again while running, it fails to enable the screens. I'm using a script called autorandr for switching between display modes - it uses xrandr. It tries to run:
xrandr --output DP1-1 --gamma 1.0:1.0:1.0 --mode 1920x1200 --panning 0x0 --pos 0x0 --rate 59.95 --reflect normal --rotate normal --output DP1-2 --gamma 1.0:1.0:1.0 --mode 1920x1200 --panning 0x0 --pos 1920x0 --rate 59.95 --reflect normal --rotate normal
But the X server responds with:
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)  Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)  Minor opcode of failed request: 21 (RRSetCrtcConfig)  Serial number of failed request: 48  Current serial number in output stream: 48
Running this exact command after booting in the dock is doing the right thing, but after undocking then docking, it doesn't work.
Any ideas here? I have updated to the latest BIOS version.
Problem also reported in launchpad with lot's of debug info, here:
bugs.launchpad.net/.../1585884
Autorandr script is here: github.com/.../

I have just bought a Dell XPS 15 (9560) and a Dell WD15 docking station with 130W power brick (same wattage as the laptop's AC-adapter). When I only use the docking station to power the laptop the discrete graphics card (GTX 1050) does not seem to work. When I am in a game (eg. Starcraft 2), I get like 15 fps with the NVIDIA recommended settings. Then when I plug in the laptops's own power brick (while still in the game) I get an immediate four-fold increase in framerate. When I unplug the laptop's own power brick the framerate drops down to 15 fps again in a heartbeat. Furthermore, when I only power the laptop through the docking station, I cannot even find the discrete GPU in the list when I'm trying to run the Geekbench 4 compute benchmark (OpenCL). Only the integrated graphics shows up. When I plug in laptop's power brick I find GTX 1050 in the list.
I have run the Dell Command Update application and all my drivers and firmware are up to date.
Does anyone have any idea to what the problem could be?

A:Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docking station does not charge Thinkpad P51 battery.

Everbody's p51 would be the same.  The thunderbolt port won't work as a charging port.  The thunderbolt specs specify 100w max.  That's not enough.  Your thunderbolt port is not for charging.  To charge via the dock, you need a workstation dock, not a thunderbolt dock.  A thinderbolt dock can charge things like an x1 carbon (5th gen) or x1 yoga (2nd gen)

Please help. I have Lenovo Thinkpad X61T. Everytime I docked my notebook I need to restart it before it detects the usb ports (I'm using an external monitor with keyboard and mouse attached on the docking station). I have updated bios but problem still persist. Please help. Thank you...

A:Unable to detect USB ports on the docking station

Your problem relates to Windows "Plug and Play". Specifically, it's called "hot docking". .

In order for hot docking to work as a Plug and Play event, several things must be in place and supported by both your hardware and software.

First off you mention a Thinkpad X61T. Is that a X61 Tablet???? Their site only lists X61, X61 Tablet and X61s.

What Windows operating system (I'll guess at XP Professional) and what Service Pack level?

And what is the version number of the "latest BIOS" you have installed.

Tell me if XP is running in ACPI mode
- click Start->Run, enter devmgmt.msc
- Look for Computer and double click it to expand it.
- Does it say "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC"? If not, exactly what does it say?

Hello,

I have a HP 6530b Laptop, and on-board Broadcom NetLink Gigabit Ethernet adapter.
When I remove my laptop from the docking station, I obviously lose Network connectivity, however, when I replace the laptop back (or even just plug in a cable directly), I cannot reconnect to the network until I reboot.
I've had this problem for about 2 years now, and finally decided to try and fix it.
I've googled it and searched on here, but without luck.

When I open Network and Sharing Center (Win7), and click change adapter settings the adapter is missing from the list (after i have removed laptop from docking station).

Can anyone please assist?

Thanks,

A:Unable to reconnect to Network after removing and returning to Docking Station

Some kind of lack of communication among PC, docking station and router I suppose. Let's see if we can find any hints in the following. Show an ipconfig /all for when you are docked with connection, un-docked, and then re-docked before a reboot. After the last one try

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

to see if that will get you going w/o a reboot.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I have had my T480s and the basic docking station for about 6 months.  I love the laptop!  This week I added the ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 to improve the overall experience - multiple monitors, etc.  However, now my microphone doesn't work.  Do I need to use an external mic connected to the dock or can I get the laptop mic to work again?  It took a while to get the speakers working again, but the mic still isn't working.  I routinely have teleconference calls over the net, so this is rather inconvenient.  Please help!      Thank you!

Hi everyone!I recently purchased a T480s with the following specs:- i7 8550u- MX150 Graphics- 16GB of RAM- WQHD Display I am running a Setup with the following Displays: internal Display @ WQHD, external Display 1 @ WQHD, external Display 2 @ FHD.Everything works perfectly fine, if I connect External Display 1 via a Thunderbolt Dock and DisplayPort and External Display 2 via HDMI directly. The problem I encounter is the following:I have some "small Adapters" for Thunderbolt -> HDMI or Display Port. They used to work fine until yesterday, now all adapters, except for one (USB C -> HDMI, USB and USB-C) have stopped working. All I get is a message stating that there is a malfunctioning USB device.Funny part: All adapters work fine on a Dell XPS15, Lenovo MIIX 510 Tab, and so on. Whats the problem? I already tried System Restore to a few days ago, did not help... Thanks,Jakob
