Please Help! My ethernet network's not working...

Q: Please Help! My ethernet network's not working...

Iíve been happily using 2Mb broadband through BT for the last 3-4 months or so, but now Iím trying to set up a network for another 2-3 computers to share it Iím running into trouble. I bought a 30m ethernet cable on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6785598902&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT&rd=1), but the weird thing is that while itíll work fine if itís connecting my computer to the router, it wonít work with any of the other 3 computers in the house Ė their ethernet ports donít light up green and the computers seem unaware its plugged in to them and unable to detect the router.

My computerís 3Com Gigabit NIC card works with it fine, while the Q-Tek card (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5790017542&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT&rd=1) I bought wonít work. Neither will the ethernet ports (unknown make offhand) built into the other two computers in the house work with the long 30m cable, but having just about managed to stretch the old short cable I had to one of them that I fitted with the Q-Tek card, it works fine with that.

Is looks like the cable was at fault afterall. Should I just pay for another one and hope that works? Did I buy the wrong sort of cable and if so, what sort should I look for?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions / replies (housemates are getting a bit irritated with the whole thing now so advice would be really useful!)Ö

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have upgraded from Windows 7 (64-bit OS) to Windows 10 (64-bit OS) on my HP ProLiant Microserver N32L.

The network adapter is not picking-up the Ethernet cable running to my router and as a result I do not have any network connectivity. I have uninstalled all the Anti-virus software, uninstalled the drivers and downloaded the latest drivers for the network adapter, motherboard and all other devices using a Driver Toolkit. Still no joy.

I am able to connect using a mobile 3G USB device, but this is not the issue. I use the PC as a mass storage device on my home network and need to get this connected via Ethernet to the router.

The network adapter is Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

Any ideas how to get this resolved.

PS: I have read most posts online and have tried all the tips and tricks to work around this.

Hello,

My name is Vladan and I have had a problem occur yesterday. My internet stopped working.
I immediately tried my phone's wireless connection and saw that it was working fine, so I tried laptop wireless and it too was working. When I plug in my network cable it stops working.
My ethernet internet connection status shows that Ipv4 and Ipv6 have "no internet accsess". It's not just my laptop's wired internet that stopped working, it's the whole network I have in my apartment consisting of two more computers who also lost their wired-ethernet internet accsess. I suspect something is wrong with my router since it relays my internet but wireless works fine so I'm stumped. When I plug in my cable it shows limited connectivity.

I have tried ipconfig /release - /renew, I have tried netsh winsock reset and netsh int ip reset log.txt
I have tried (netsh winsock reset catalog), also I tried (netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log) and it said the following ::::::
Resetting Interface, OK!
Resetting Neighbor, OK!
Resetting Path, OK!
Resetting , failed.
Accsess is denied.

Resetting, OK!
Restart the computer to complete this action.
::::
I don't know what is this "failed and accsess is denied" but it might be the problem.
I have rebooted my router several times but also with no results. I have checked DHCP settings for both router and laptop adapter and it all checks out. I have check IP filtering and MAC filtering on router and it all look... Read more

Hello,

My laptop is from Toshiba, model L650 PSK1JA OK3017. Here's Toshiba's driver page for my device:

Support :: Toshiba :: Computers, Laptops/Notebooks, Tablets, Televisions, DVD and Blu-Ray Players, Camcorders, Storage, Accessories, and more

I recently purchased a blank hard drive along with a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I've installed all drivers listed on the page for a 64 bit system but when I try to install the "Intel Wireless LAN Driver (For Intel Model Only)" driver or Proset driver, the driver extraction begins, ends, but when the setup is meant to run, nothing happens. I've redownloaded it and attempted to install it twice to no avail.

Basically, I cannot connect to the internet and Windows cannot detect my network adapter.

If anyone can help me figure out what I need to install to get my network adapters to install, that'd be great. I can't call Toshiba support because their operating hours are when I'm at school.

Occasionally, when I try running the driver I mentioned before and the extraction is complete, when I select "No" as to whether I want to run the file, Windows gives me the error: "Archive Extractor -- Error occured in system module [-135]".

I still have my old, working hard drive, which I replaced because it was slow. Is it possible to grab the network drivers from that and transfer it to my new hard drive? I can use this hard drive to help you guys help me.

A couple of weeks ago my internet randomly disconnected and started giving an unidentified network error. As I was connected via an ethernet cable, I disconnected it to find that the wifi was working as normal. I've also tested 2 other laptops via the same ethernet port and have found that it's giving the same issue. However I have a smart TV and when it's connected via the same ethernet port, it connects to the internet with no issues.

From my room, the pc's are connected into a wall port rather than directly into the router, and the same goes for other rooms around the house. I've also tested the laptops in all the other rooms in the house to find that they give the same issue. (once again, smart tv's connect to to the internet in all rooms with no issues).

anything connected directly into the router itself works normally.
I've tried resetting the router,
setting static IP's
and varies other fixes on my pc that I now think were obsolete since it's not my PC that's having the issue....

So From all of this, I've figured that the issue is not related to any of the computers, The ethernet port/s works normally, and the router is working fine, and any of the computers directly connected to it have no issues.
I'm somewhat confused since the ethernet ports in the wall should simply be a signal extension of what the router is sending off itself, and the signal is working fine (as i've mentioned previously smart TV's have internet).

Our internet service provider updated our internet speed from 100mbps to 1000mbps for no extra cost. We had a Netgear n150 wireless router but it wouldn't support the 1000mbps speed. We were told we needed to upgrade to a r6300 netgear router which is capable of 1000mbps. Now were are told we need to install an ethernet PCI network card or a network adapter. I am told we have to have a 2.0 port for the network adapter to work. It would be cheaper for us to install the internal Ethernet PCI Card, my problem is I don't know which one to buy. I know we need one that is rated 1000mbps, are these universal or will we have to buy one that fits each brand of computer?

Default gateway: 94.205.214.1

I have a sitecom router if that helps at all? It says to go to 192.168.0.1 which I have done but sdtill confused! Thanks in advance

All the above looks good. Using 192.168.0.1 as a URL in your browser, you should get a request for the user/password for that router. Once you login, you can go to the WiFi portion, enable it, set the SSID and encryption you desire.

Where do you get stuck?

Ok so here goes. I have DSL svc on a 2wire 2700HG-B modem (Although really should it be called a modem? Is there any Modulation/Demodulation going on? I digress).

It is connected by ethernet cable to my main PC which I call D1 and is running XP pro SP3. It also has a wireless card which I don't use but I want at least 1 machine wired in case I need to do any wls TS.

I have another DT XP Pro Sp3 Machine which I call D2 and is connected Wlsly to the modem (there I go again). A Laptop I call M1, running Vista is connected Wlsly. These two Wls machines can see each others shares and ping the main machine as well.

All 3 ping each other fine but the Main machine cannot see the others shares and vice versa. I tried also swithcing to the Wls on D1 to see if that might be the issue but I didn't think so as I vaguely remember in past years I have been able to network wired+wls. That's why D1 has two ip addresses. By the way, what are the issues that may come up if I leave both of them on and connected to the 2wire device?

I ran some cmd line stuff and here it is from D1:

I just recently got a 1gbit router, however I am having problems with it. I hooked it up to my cable box and then to a switch. The switch then has 8 ports that flows to various computer/printers. The internet is not working with wired, but only wireless... Right now I tihnk the problem is because my switch/hub is a 100mbit. Is that true? I also have a cat6 cable and can link that directly from the router to my computer which works.
Also I have another computer that has a 100mbit network adapter on the graphic card... that computer doesnt work.
Do I need everything to be 1gbit?

Vista Ultimate 64-bit, ASUS Rampage Formula motherboard, USB mouse and keyboard connected in back ports.

Two things happened: Avira antivirus warned me of some threats which I either ignored or deleted. Windows Update had some updates ready (although I'm not sure if it updated).

I turned off my PC for a couple of hours, turned it back on and realized that my USB keyboard was not working on the password screen.

I eventually unplugged it from the back and plugged it into the front, where it worked. However, my USB mouse did not work when plugged into the second front port, nor did it work when plugged into the front port in which the keyboard worked.

I accessed System Restore using my keyboard and restored to one day previously. When it finished, both keyboard and mouse worked, although I got a pop-up message alerting me that the "drivers for your device could not be installed." When I clicked "OK," the mouse stopped working again.

I have checked BIOS and both mouse and keyboard are recognized, so it does not appear to be a hardware issue.

don't know anything about networking. I'm learning as I go.

I have 2 computers networked together by cross over cable using ethernet. One computer is Win xp other computer is Vista. Win xp is the host. Win xp has dsl and printer hooked up to it. They both are in the same workgroup. I ran the Network wizard on both computers.

Vista in network says...connected to network...local only. Win xp in network connection say local area connection...connected and firewalled...and it says the name of the network card.

I tried to ping Vista it says reply from 130.81.135.0: Destination net unreachable It also says that 4 packets were sent and 4 received. I tried to ping Win xp it says request timed out. It says 4 packets sent..4 lost.

I have ZoneAlarm protecting my computer. I don't know if that could be contributing to the problem. Perventing Vista from getting to Win xp.

I haven't setup sharing yet.

Can anyone help me please?

A:2 computers ethernet network

Turn off XP firewall and VISTA firewall and see if you can connect to both. Did you setup a workgroup name. like botgamesnet for each system. Did you give the PCs computer names see below what I mean:

VISTA OS
workgroup name: botgamesnet
computer name: botgamepc1
PC1 - Make sure you create a static IP 192.169.1.10, 255.255.255.0, 192.169.1.1

XP OS
workgroup name: botgamesnet
computer name: botgamepc2
PC2 - Make sure you create a static IP 192.169.1.11, 255.255.255.0, 192.169.1.1

open a dos window click on start then on run type: cmd
type: arp -a

PC1 IP
Default-gateway IP
PC2 IP

You might not see anything yet, now reboot both PCs when you get back in to them run arp -a

do a: nbtstat -n and see if your PC is registered and you should see your group name = workgroup

I have been having problems with my computer randomly dropping my internet connection. Usually my ping spikes real high, Skype disconnects me, the game I'm playing disconnects me. I had this problem before upgrading to windows 10 and don't know if its my killer e2200 that came integrated with my motherboard. The driver is updated and I thought I might as well start here before trying to replace modem or router. I also want to add that I have a brand new Cat 6 cable Ethernet cable.

The only problem is trying to find a PCI Ethernet network adapter that is compatible with windows 10. I would really like to avoid using a USB 3.0 and prefer to use a PCI slot. Of course it doesn't need to say "good for gaming" as I think any generic 10/100/1000 Ethernet adapter will do. The problem is finding one that works with Windows 10. Thanks.

And if anyone want to try and solve my network problem your welcome to. I notice it only when I'm playing a game and talking to friends on Skype. I might also be listening to music with a mixture of downloaded and streaming from Spotify. When I'm playing a game and talking I will notice that the persons voice is getting broken up and my game starts to lag, ping spikes way passed 1000. When this happens Skype says I'm offline and I'm trying to reconnect. The problem I'm facing leads me to believe it could be my router thinking that I'm taking to much bandwidth or something. Hello again,

My case can be retrieved from my other thread: WiFi not showing up

So now my problem is that I am having problems getting internet access through ethernet for my PC. It says it is an unidentified network. Sometimes it has trouble connecting to the network and tries to identify it, sometimes it doesn't realize that ethernet has been plugged in and and no network is sensed.

However, internet through Wifi works.

Yesterday night I managed to solve the problem (I have no idea how) but when I woke up it didn't work again.

I have tried different ethernet cables, different slots.

I have tried ethernet over my laptop, which also says unidentified network.
When I look at my ipconfig /all I have no default gateway

That is because you are not connected to anything. The IP address you are getting is the Default Windows IP address assign to network adapters that are not connected to a DHCP server. Check your router, check the cable.

I just did a clean install of a W7 ultimate pc and have been trying for hours to set up a network with a W8.1 laptop.

This was working before the clean install but I can't remember how do do it.

I do not have a router and am using a 'functioning' twisted Ethernet cable.

The W8.1 laptop is connected to the Internet via a Vodafone stick/pen

I am NOT trying to put the pc online right now.

Any instructions on how to do this would be much appreciated.

The Ethernet connection is showing as 'unidentified' right now.

Thanks,

Michael

I had to format my wifes Acer laptop with MS homeVista. When completed, it showed in the device manager that drivers for ethernet controller and network controller was not installed. I have not been able to install any. I have a disk with all drivers I could find at the Acer site but these two are not among them. I have the installation CD but can't locate them on it. I looked for driver online, but every one wants to sell them for 29$. If any can help me please let me hear from you. Thanks.

This is a really stupid question, I have an build-in ethernet(I think) on my motherboard. Pretend that I bought a network card, and install it instide the PCI slot. If I connect one cable from the build-in ethernet motherboard to the router, and I use another network cable to connect between a network card to the same router or different router, what will happen?

I think it'll might explode or something.

I have two computers connected to a home network via ethernet. I have a cable connection, and both are connected to the net by a linksys router. One computer decides to stop letting the internet to work, I have no idea why. The router light shows the connection as active.

After I bought a $15 Ethernet PCI 10/100 network card from bestbuy today, I figure out my other ethernet card which originally came with the computer is disabled. So I enable it, and try both my original ethernet slot and the new one. No luck at all.

Anyone have any clue as to what my problem is and how to possibly fix it?

Any suggestions at all would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Dan

A:Home network help (ethernet)

If both computers are directly connected to the router, then one computer isn't keeping the other off, it would be the router doing that.

Make sure that your router is configured properly. Also make sure that your new NIC has the correct settings. When you connected the new card, it may not have picked up the correct settings.

Hello, I just built a system with Vista Ultimate x64. However, when I connect to internet via ethernet, it keeps showing "unidentified network" and limited connectivity. The wireless works fine when I used DWA-160 Dlink adapter. The motherboard is Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R and it has 2 ethernet ports onboard. I'm connecting via a campus network and the ethernet worked fine on my old computer, ran on XP Pro.

A:Unidentified network via ethernet

Someone correct me if I'm wrong - but I believe Vista displays "Unidentified Network" when it cannot find a gateway to the outside world.

Looking at your link details supports my supposition, as no gateway is listed. This is kind of required to get access outside of your local subnet - in this case, the internet.

Looking a second time shows your IP address as a 169 number. That indicates, to me, that DHCP isn't working.

It seems to me that you might want to contact your campus IT department and find out what is necessary to get you going.
