Windows update giving return code 800736b3; restores giving x00000022

Q: Windows update giving return code 800736b3; restores giving x00000022

I recently noticed that the system was trying to do 7 updates every day at closedown, and found that update was giving a return code of 800736b3.

I have run SURT several times, and it doesn't seem to give any results (or should I be looking somewhere else?).

I ran sfc /scannow and extracted the results and they are in sfcdetails.txt (attached). SFC said there were some files it couldn't fix, even though sfcdetails.txt says it has fixed all of them.

CBS.zip is much too big to upload using the paperclip - is there another way?

I tried restoring to an earlier restore point, and unfortunately all the attempted updates have flushed my list of restore points - and the oldest few all give me a return code of x00000022.

Not sure if this is one problem or two...! I am reluctant to do a System Recovery as it sounds pretty drastic - help would be much appreciated!

PS Is any more info required?

Preferred Solution: Windows update giving return code 800736b3; restores giving x00000022

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It's not critical, but you could get rid of it by uninstalling KB3022345 and/or KB3068708 and hiding the latter when it reappers in your offered updates list.

Hi y'all,

I'm having trouble with Windows Update.
Since yesterday around noon, I have not been able to install the rest of the updates that the program said needed to be installed.

I turned my computer on, and WinUp said there were 25 updates ready to be installed. I clicked Install Updates and after a few minutes it said some updates weren't installed and gave me error code 80071A91. Only 8 updates installed (most having to do with .Net stuff) and the other 17 I have had no luck installing. The updates that haven't installed are in the screen shot I attached- at least I believe it attached

Anyway, I also noticed Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB2879017) was "behaving" funny. I ran WinUp with only this update to install and it said it did install it. When I restarted, and reopened WinUp the update was not on the list. I tried installing the rest of the updates, and when they failed and I clicked on View Important Update, "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB2879017)" was back.

I'm not entirely sure what to do. I have done the following to try and fix:

1. Error checked Local Disk C. Tried WinUp, no luck.
2. Defragmented, then error checked again, and ran WinUp, no luck.
3. Did the command prompt sfc /scannow. Restarted. Ran WinUp, no luck.

Please help me. I thought I took very good care of my computer. ... Read more

This is my first post, and not all that clever with pcs, so apologies in advance if I've missed something out.

I have been getting this error code repeatedly when trying to install update KB2922229 for a couple of months now. Never had any problems before. Other updates were installing just fine, but I am now getting the same error code when trying to install update KB2871997. As both of these updates seem to be related to security, I am getting a bit concerned.

I have followed the steps in the Windows Update Posting Instructions, running SURT and an SFC scan. Logs attached.

Hope someone will be kind enough to help with this.

I have never seen such a CheckSUR summary before!

Have you tried installing the updates again since running the CheckSUR/SURT?

If not, please do so, and let us know what happens - First do a check for Updates, and see if the updates appear at all - they may not.

Upload the zip folder when you post again.

If the zip folder is too big for the forum, upload just the CBS.log from the CBS folder copy on your Desktop.
Please add your SF Systems Specs by following this tutorial: System Info - See Your System SpecsIn the System Manufacturer/Model Number field, manually type Desktop or Laptop adding it to the information already in the field.

The update is called:
nvidia - Graphics adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Other hardware - NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M.
After installing it, whenever my laptop tries to use the Nvidia card, I get a blue screen and the system restarts.
I looked in installed updates to uninstall it, and it is not there.
I did a system restore to four days before I installed it, and I still get the same effect. Lastly, I installed some older nvidia drivers that used to work using the clean install option, and I still have this problem.

A:Optional update in windows update is giving me a blue screen.

It looks as though the update changed something in nvlddmkm.sys, and for some reason, it wasn't changed back when I did the system restore. I have no idea how to go about fixing it.

Hello all, I recently tried installing the latest updates from Microsoft and right afterwards my computer started acting strange. For instance, I couldn't seem to connect to the internet. I tried to do an uninstall one by one but, that looked like it was going to take a while so I rolled back to the day before with System Restore.
Right now I have re-downloaded the updates and I guess I'll try them one by one and see which one causes the problem. I was wondering if anyone else was having any trouble or is it just something with my computer only? I use Windows XP, Zone Alarm, AVG antivirus. Thanks,Toni.

A:Solved: Is Windows Update giving anybody else trouble?

toni: I have had no trouble with Windows update and have heard of no trouble from other people. Perhaps it was just a coincident that you lost your internet after d/l the updates.
Evidently you did you get your internet up again, since you are redownloading the Updates.

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Hello All,

I am running Windows 8.1 on a laptop and almost always use a USB mouse. The aforementioned mouse has never had any problems before, and was working perfectly yesterday. Today, however, I plugged in the mouse and was told that: "The last usb device you connected to this computer malfunctioned", and the mouse was not working, however it did light up as it does when plugged into something. I restarted the computer and tried again, but to no avail. In device manager, where the mouse is usually shown, it simply said "Unknown USB device (Device Descriptor request failed)". I updated the drivers of both the USB port the mouse was plugged into and also attempted to update the drivers of the device, but both times it was said to be "up to date". When plugged into another laptop, the mouse worked fine, and when I plugged a pen drive into the port, it also worked fine. All 4 of my ports work fine with a pen drive, but I recieve this error whichever port I plug the mouse into. I have trawled multiple forums to try and find a solution, but none have worked.

I found a suggestion on the MS help forums which suggested to uninstall every single USB device listed in device manger. I am now no longer getting the issue mentioned above. Instead NONE of my USB ports work with ANYTHING, the mouse included, but also my hard drives and pen drives. The mouse still works fine in othe computers. Upon booting, the PC gives a BIOS beep code of 3.3, i.e. 3 long beeps followed by 3 short beeps which is repeated 5 times before the PC successfully boots. From what I can find, this translates to "The embedded controller has timed out waiting for BIOS to return from graphics initialization". So a possible issue with the graphics card? The PC behaves as normal but there has been an instance where the display has cut out completely, giving an entirely blank screen, with no mouse or anything. I was only watching some Netflix when the screen cut out. It appears to not be an issue with the monitor as while the screen was blank I was still access the monitor's on screen controls and I've been using the same monitor for a while with another system. I couldn't really find any other people with this same issue and therefore was unable to find any possible solutions. I must also note that this is a new PC. It only began giving the beep code on the second day of use which was yesterday on the 26/12. Any suggestions are appreciated

Hello, I have looked everywhere and tried out all the fixes I could find to try to rectify this problem. I've had my laptop for just over 4 years (a birthday gift from my parents) when it suddenly decided to remove it's activation about a month ago. I've
run the standard fix a few times that I found online in several places (including here on Microsoft [https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-windows_install/error-code-0xc004f074-unable-to-activate-windows/239826b1-0d56-4565-baf0-8a5c407c31cc?auth=1])
but none of it has fixed this issue. When I got to the slui steps I tried both 3 & 4. The regular activation gives me the same error and the by phone activation says it's not available to activate by phone. Can someone please give me some advice on or
a way to fix this issue? I would appreciate any useful help that can be offered.

Thank you.

I have a problem with Windows Update. It continues to fail with error code 800736B3. I have tried the update troubleshooter for Windows, I have ran scannow, I also have installed the update readiness tool and hotfix.
Still the updates fail.
I would greatly appreciate any help with this.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

I've been trying to solve this for a few months now but I haven't gotten anywhere. I've followed all the instructions here and they still continue to fail.

Windows Update Posting Instructions
I would really appreciate any insight as to what you think may be causing the issue, reformatting would really set me back since this computer has some industry specific CAD programs that are a pain to setup.

thanks again,Mark

For some reason I cant post an attachment "attach button doesn't respond, in fact none of them do", I'll add a reply to the thread to see if I can then.

Update: Sorry about the missing attachments, I moved them out of the folder and forgot to attach, there are a couple of older CBS Persist files if you need them.

The error code 9C59 appeared when I tried to add Internet Explorer 11 to the update, prior to that it wasn't there.

Hello all. I am relatively new to using Vista and am hoping someone can help me. All of my users have standard user accounts on their PCs. There are some specific programs installed which need to be updated regularly. However, updates require the administrator password, which means I have to do the updates on each PC myself. Is there a way to set the permissions so the user can update only the programs I designate? Thanks.

I've been trying to update Security Essentials now for a couple weeks and I keep getting the following error message:

I am running Win7 64. What is causing this error and how do I fix it?

I haven't updated Win7 in quite some time, perhaps that's it?

I didn't want to do all of the updates to keep getting notifications/pushes to upgrade to Win10 - I don't want it and want to stay on Win7.

A:Security Essentials is giving error when trying to update

Yes, the fact that you have not updated Windows with important security patches for "quite some time" may be contributing to your problem.

The free upgrade offer from Win7 to Win10 ended months ago.
There are no more "GWX" reminders.
So there is currently no solid reason to refuse important security patches for Windows and your other MS software (e.g. MS Office).
If you are missing one or more months worth of security updates, your system is vulnerable.

As a general principle (with rare exceptions), one should install at least ALL "critical" and "important" SECURITY updates.
The decision to install "Recommended" and "Optional" patches, especially those that are not security-related, is up to the user. You'll need to read the descriptions of each available patch to determine if it applies to or might be needed for your system.

I do not use MSE.
So I cannot help specifically with the error message you report.
But, for starters, I would suggest running Windows Update manual checks and installing ALL available "Critical" and "Important" SECURITY updates.
It may have to be done in batches, depending on how many of them you are missing.
In other words, do not try to install 20 or 30 security patches all at once.
I suggest leaving ".NET framework" patches for last.

And you will need to reboot several times during the process, when prompted.
It's a good idea NOT to use the computer for... Read more

I've recently made a SP3 update on my Windows XP Home. Initially I kept on getting blue screen with this error. I was unable to load Windows or Safe Mode.

STOP: 0X0000007E (0XC0000001D, 0XF78DE8EA, 0XF78DE7F4, 0XF78DE4F0)

After reading some forums, I've unplugged all my USB devices as some people suggest that it might be the problems with drivers.

After unplugging all USB devices - printer, external HDD and mouse, Windows loaded without problem but I got a new error after Windows finishes loading.

BCCode : 1000007e BCP1 : C0000005 BCP2 : BA5038F0 BCP3 : BA5037F0
BCP4 : BA5034EC OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 3_0 Product : 768_1

I suspect this error has to do with drivers.

At the same time, if I try to plug in any of my USB devices, i.e. mouse, printer or external HDD, the blue screen will reappear immediately. They used to work perfectly when I was on SP2 until last night.

FYI, I'm using Dell INSPIRON 640m laptop with Windows XP Home SP2 until the moment I install the SP3 update.

Hope I can get some help or pointers here. Not impressed with SP3 update definitely!

Thank you very much.

Hi All,
The Machine Info:
I am running a Windows 7 Enterprise machine 64 bit OS SP1 installed as well as all other updates from Microsoft.
CPU Intel I5 M560 with 4 gb ram this machine is not part of a domain. This machine has Norton Security installed (since day one and tested with EICAR test file on install) and has scans done on a regular basis.
The problem:
I use Outlook 2010 64 bit to connect to an exchange server and to my personal email (separate profiles). I own my domain for my personal email, and received an email that my account has been hacked ( email from hosting Company admin) and its being used to spam. he changed my password and it stopped but the spammer kept trying to get in. Four days later I opened outlook and entered the new password and the spam started on the mail server again as if Outlook relayed my password to the hacker. Machine is not slow at all and does not suffer from blue screen on any other symptom that I have noticed.
I have run full system scans with Norton (pc was in safe mode network access) and with Norton Power Eraser.
Norton only revealed tracking cookies...
Norton Power Eraser photoshop.exe as a startup item and removed it....
Malware Bytes Found Adware.StatBlaster and removed it
I have used sysinternals to monitor TCP activity and nothing looks out of the norm…
How can I be sure the machine is clean?
Thanks in Advance

I'm using the RC of Windows 7, and love it. Switched from Vista to it. So, I got 50 GB currently and it's doing well. I just would like to split my drive in two (125 GB) because I rarely (no, never) use Vista, but I do run applications off of it's partition. So, I wanted to split it.

I figured it would be easy, go into Vista, shrink the volume by around 40 GB and extend the Windows partition. No go, I was only able to get Vista to take 7 GB from it's partition, which is useless.

I heard a lot about gParted, so I tried that out. I was able to boot from my Flash drive and got into it. I took 40 GB from the drive, and attempted to give it to Windows 7's partition. No go, it wouldn't allow me to allocate more than 3 MB. So I am wondering if there is something I am doing wrong? Just in case I'll list the steps from gParted (I feel safer to do it from something not on the hard drive):

1. Boot up gParted.
2. Right click Windows Vista drive and click Move / Resize.
3. Type in the amount I wanted it to be. (In this case 125 GB - keep in mind this is not how much I wanted to take off, but how much I wanted it to be).
4. Let it do it's magic until it was "done" unallocating (good thing it doesn't do anything until you click Apply).
5. Right click the Windows 7 drive and click Move / Resize.
6. Attempt to enter in the amount I want to increase it by, and try using the up arrow.
7. Booting back into Windows after failing and writin... Read more

A:Giving Windows 7 more space.

I hope you backed your data up first!

Have you looked into gParted's ntfsresize command? It's not part of the GUI. It may help.

I certainly don't want to discourage you from this, but in general I have been advised and pass on the advice to avoid messing with partitions. Delete and create all you like, but stretching/shrinking is just asking for trouble. If your resizing utility makes one wrong step the whole partition is toast. It's happened to me- with gParted in fact on NTFS.

Backup, backup backup!
