Connecton Problems on Win 8.1 Computer after View Shared

Q: Connecton Problems on Win 8.1 Computer after View Shared

I have a windows 7 laptop and a windows 8.1 desktop.

I can see the shared folders on the Win 8.1 machine from the Win 7 machine. I can copy files from W 8.1 to W7. But if I try to open large files, such as video files, remotely, or if I try to copy files that are too large, the connection times out. If I try to view folders that contain a large number of files, the connection times out.

After that the Win 8.1 machine has no Internet connection - trying to browse to a web site times out. Running the connection troubleshooter on that 8.1 machine fixes the problem. I can again see the win 8.1 shared folders and files, but if I try to open or DL a large file or view a folder that contains a large number of files the problem repeats.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have three computers all Win 7 Home Premium and sharing (Homegroup). Side not I also had them sharing with out Homegroup and still same issue. Also This occurs regardless if PC3 is connected via wire or wireless. Additional notes AV was also disable to rule out. That is the only thing running on PC3 and nothing is running background wise on PC1 or PC2.

PC1 can easily view contents of Shared PC2 instantly.

PC2 can easily view contents of Shared PC1 instantly.

PC3 can easily view contents of Shared PC1 & PC2 instantly.

PC1 & PC2 can not view contents of Shared PC3 instantly; it takes approximately 35 seconds to view contents of main shared folder and same for each additional sub-folder. Also if copying a file initially it takes awhile before it starts and then stars off slow around 585KB/s copying over from PC1 or PC2 to PC3 before it jumps up to around 10MB/s+. However if I copy the same file from PC3 to PC1 or PC2 no speed issues what so ever. Speeds actually get well up into 70MB/s.

Any thoughts?

Recently received modem in NC for Verizon.com. DSL service just started in this area of mountains. I am approximately 24000 feet from repeater and 15000 feet is "last/best usage". I have a Toshiba laptop and it will not connect in timely manner. First tech calls seemed to lean to a modem problem? But tech came to house and said he thought my laptop was either too old or too many programs were "open" competing with internet startup. I don't know...I brought laptop home to FL where I have ATT DSL and it still does not start up in appropriate amount of time.

Is this your connection ?

If it is I'm surprised you haven't secured it and if it isn't do you have permission from the person paying the bill to use their connection ?

Right now I can see the folder for my other wired connection, but I can't access it and I can't see the computer in the "View networked computers", so I guess that folder is there just because windows has seen it before, but not now.

I'm thinking about just restarting my network again, anyone have a good guide or anyhting?

when i open up the c: drive on the windwos 7 machine, i can see all 227 files.

when i open up excel or word, and open a file that is stored on the windows 7 machine, it will open fine, but when i try and browse for the file that is stored on the windows 7 machine, it does not show it.

now here is the interesting thing:
when i open up the shared c: drive on another computer running windows 7, (not the server) i can see all 227 files and have no problems.

Recently I started experiencing a problem where others on my network could not access my shared folders. At first I thought the problem was because I was using XP Pro and they were XP Home users. When I tried implementing the solution of granting the guest account network access from the local security policies menu, after I closed the window, the guest account would be removed again. Eventually I ended up reinstalling with Home edition but now a couple days later I am experiencing the same problem ("Logon Failure: The user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer"). I downloaded the Windows Resource Kit Tools and used these commands:

net user guest /active:yes
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

to enable the guest account but still no access. Please help me before I go crazy trying to figure this out.

A:Unable to view shared folders (two XP Home machines)

I logged in in safe mode under the administrator account and ran the ntrights commands again. Now when I try to logon I get a user/pass prompt but when I logon I get the same error message. I am absolutely at a loss. BTW, does anyone know what causes this problem? It seems like quite a few people have it although I have yet to find another case of someone not being able to access XP Hom from another XP Home machine.

I used to think I had a networking problem browsing the shared Public folder (or any other shared folder) of one Vista machine from another Vista machine but i've discovered that I can't browse the shared Public folder (or any other shared folder) of a Vista machine from it's own Network view (Network\Computer Name\Public). Explorer won't browse and it crashes. I can see the shared folder (Public or otherwise) easily enough, it's just impossible to browse it.

I have no problem browsing the Public folder on a Vista machine if I start at it's own Computer view (Computer\C:\Users\Public), but impossible from it's own Network view (Network\Computer Name\Public).

Note I'm trying to browse the Public folder on the same machine not from a different machine, and Windows Explorer crashes. Both of my Vista machines behave the same way.

I need help please.

A:Can't browse shared folder (eg Public) from Network view

Hi go to control panel open "network and sharing centre" under network click on "customize" set it to Private. Then expand "public folder sharing" and check "turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open files". Make sure you have configured the windows firewall if you have it running as well.

Outlook 2007 in the computer of one of the users in my company cannot view or edit a shared calendar. When I try to open the calendar it pops-up an alert that says "You do not have permission to view this calendar"

It doesn't seem to be a rights or permission issue, because when she access using her account information in another computer, she is able to view and edit the calendars. Some of the other computers have Outlook 2007 as well, so I'm wondering if there is a setting or an extra step that I need to configure in Outlook 2007 in order to access those calendars?

A:Outlook 2007 cannot view nor edit a shared calendar.

let me explain:

there r 2 users in ur company : A and B

If A wants share his calender with B then :

1: A needs to grant access to B from his outlook calender. right click on calender- share- calender permissions. Assign the desired permissions

2. Then B needs to ' open' A's calendar in his computer by : right click on 'my calendar' - add calendar - from address book.

When I click on AMAG Contacts it has a list of pictures and names.

When I open AMAG Contacts I can click >View>Change view>By Category (or whatever??)
BUT neither AMAG Contacts nor my view change is persistent. I want the changed view to be persistent across closing O2013 and reopening it

1. Is there a way to default to AMAG contacts when opening contacts?
2. Is there a way to make my view of choice persistent? I like the Category view.

I cannot find any dialog that allows me to do the above.
Several others in the building have asked the same question and I think the older versions are more straightforward and controllable.
Can this be done? I perused Outlook options and saw nothing there either.

Hi,
I have a router for my computer that has vista. After my computer has been in sleep the internet connection gets lost. What can I do? Also, how can I make my wireless secure? I have a linksys wireless-g 2.4 ghz router.
Thank you,
Tammy

A:help with internet connecton

When the computer goes to sleep (standby or hibernate) it will turn off evrything that uses power and is not needed. This is especially true for laptops to conserve the batteries. Many people with desktops do not even use standby/hibernate, but turn them off. They elect to either turn the computer off if going to be away for a short time or run always on.

From what you say, I am assuming you are connecting wireless to the router. If you are using a laptop you may not want to make any changes to conserve battery power.

Go into Device Manager, under Network Adapter, select wireless adapter and right click. In the drop down menu select Properties. In the window that comes up, click the Power Management tab. Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn this device off". "Allow this device to wake the computer" should also be unchecked.

For security, you need to set an encryption code for your network. Probably information in the Users Manual for the router. This encryption code will need to be entered into the router on the wireless set up page and into the setups for all the wireless adapters of computers using the network . Another thing is after all wireless connections have been made, turn off Network Name (SSID) broadcast on the router. This will keep anyone else from seing your network.

Should be better directions in the network threads. If you click on search and type, Network Security into the search box you will get over 500 threads listed.

im running a windows xp pro pc, netgear router, i have done tons of research on how to secure your vnc connecton through the internet. I understand that i have to poke a hole through my router for port 22 for ssh, and port 5800 for vnc, i understand that you use the a ssh client on the client side with something like putty, but what do i run on my host pc thats running vnc server?

That ain't going to work unless you have an OpenSSH server running on your network. I have never done this completely in a Windows Environment, only with Linux. But you can get SSH for Windows here.
http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/

I can only assume it works the same way as OpenSSH on Linux but I don't know.

You may be better off Tunneling VNC over Hamachi or just using UltraVNC with the encryption plugin.

Hello all. Apologies if this has been asked before, but I searched and didn't find anything. I also searched Google, but everyone who complained of the problem had a different setup from me. I also posted this to Notebook Forum if any of you are there. Anyway, my preferred view for the old My Computer, called just Computer in Win7, is the default "Tiles" view, per the attached file Tiles.jpg which I screenshot off my work computer. But it's not available on my brand new machine. There is no Tiles view available in the dropdown. It has been replaced with an "Extended Tiles" view which is completely useless. I think this may have happened when I tried and failed to install Win8 over 7, but who knows, I just noticed it the other day. The best I can do is a custom "Details" view, per the attached Details.jpg. It has basically the same information about the drives but lacks the other hardware. I know this is not a big problem, but I would like to fix it anyway. All the posters in other forums where this issue arises installed some kind of aftermarket software which modified their folder views. I did install one called Folder Options X which disables full line selection within folders, but I have this installed on both computers so that can't be the culprit. I do not want to reset all my folder views unless absolutely necessary. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. TIA.

A:Tiles view missing from (My) Computer view?

Hello PDSF,

It sounds like something may have gone wrong using the disable full row select if that is the only thing you did that affected folder views.

Usually, it's required to reset folder views back to default to have "Tiles" instead of "Extended Tiles".

I shared a Canon Pixma MP170 printer on a Windows 7 Home Premium machine. I can see the shared printer name over the network from the XP machine within Add Printer Wizard screen. When I try to add the shared Canon printer on a Windows XP SP3 computer it says it will connect to the printer to download drivers but than it says no drivers are available.
Then it opens up a screen that asks me to provide an unnamed INF file. I put the install CD for the Pixma in the CD tray and pointed it to all Canon INF files located on the CD (one at a time) but it will not go any further. I also found same type of Canon printer INF files within the Program Files/Canon printer folder, but it would not use those either to complete printer add.

Am I missing some procedure that is needed to add a shared printer on a Windows XP computer from a different operating system such as Windows 7 Home Premium?

Ok, this has been giving me the biggest headache for the past month and any help would be MUCH appreciated as I now have hit a dead end.

I have a home network set up with one computer serving as the Server for the house, it is running Vista Ultimate x64. All the printers are connected to that computer and are shared. The server also contains all of our movies and music for the house. I have several computers connected to it ranging from Vista Home Premium x86 to Vista Ultimate x64. Now for some reason I am only able to print to the printer when I am logged in on an account with the exact name and password as the one that I made on the server. Any other account I just get an error in the printer queue. So I figured I just needed to set up everyone with a user name and password on the server. I did that and the same thing is happening. I've checked the security tab on the printer and set Everyone to have full control over the printer. Printer sharing is enabled on the server and I'm adding the printer to the other computers via local port "\\SERVER\Colour Laser\". So I have no idea what else it could be. I'm also installing both x86 and x64 drivers on the server and the proper ones on the client computers.

So to recap. I have:

Printer 1 - HP Laser CP1215
Printer 2 - HP Deskjet 5550

All firewalls disabled on PC's-firewall enabled on router
All in workgroup called "HOUSE"
All running up to date "Avast" antivirus
All running remote access program called RealVNC
All can reach internet with no problems
All have Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP turned on
All running Windows XP Home

Here is the problem, workgroup HOUSE cannot be found on laptop after booting from cold start or standby(therefore Desktop A shared drives cannot be accessed).

If I ping desktop A with the computer name(THEDELL), it cannot be found.
If I ping desktop A with the IP address, it is found. Then re-pinging the name will work.

OR

If I use RealVNC to access desktop A from the laptop(just open up the access window then close it), then I can access the shared drives.

After successful pinging or using RealVNC, shared drives on Desktop A can be accessed.

After a period of time (undetermined), the shared drive access goes away and I have to do one of the two processes to access the shared drives again. Rebooting does not help!!

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

This happens on both of the PC's that wont print. The 2 that can print obviously have no problems but 1 of them I did nothing on and it is using the old settings before the reformat and still prints with no problem. The other PC I have deleted and readded the shared printer with no problems.

Both the PC's that are having problems I have taken all security software off and still get the same problem.

Totally stumped......any ideas from anyone would be appreciated

My computers are networked together but when i try to install a new program that files must be shared. When i try to access this shared filed it tells me that the network path name is wrong to the admministrator computer. I need advice.

You will need to share the folder the executable file resides in and create a shortcut to the file on the other machine.

Some details would be helpful.

I run XP Home and recently added an external HD. For some reason when I play MP3 Playlist songs in Windows Media Player the only songs that can be played/recognized are on the "G" drive. It seems these songs used to be "F" drive songs as all the ones that are not recognized now are "F:\My Shared Folder" or "F:\My Downloads".
Do I need to rename the folders to "G" from "F" and if so....how ?

Thanks,
Mike

A:G:\My Shared Folder - Problems !

try and remove the songs that are not recognized, and re-add them under their new location. Problem might be media player is looking for the songs under the old file path (f:\) and not their new location on your G:\

Ok. So. I'm currently in the process of waiting for my broadband to become activated.

In the meantime, I tried to make this little plan work.. and I've tried and tried all afternoon and have got very strange results.

Here's the setup:
1. D-Link Wireless ADSL Router (IP configured to 192.168.0.5)
2. Desktop connecting to dialup, shared (IP configured to 192.168.0.1)
3. Laptop connecting wirelessly to D-Link (Keep changing settings..)

Strangest thing.. it has worked twice. But when I reboot the laptop, it stops working? First time it worked.. it automatically detected all settings and knew that the default gateway was .0.1. I rebooted, and it no longer worked, it thought the default gateway was .0.5. I then manually specificied the IP/subnet/gateway and it worked!.. then I rebooted and it didn't? I've played around with all the router's settings.. disabling DHCP, but then it re-enabled itself.. etc. I'm not the best networking guru but I really like things when I can get them to work, and I get a little ticked when it doesn't work, especially considered it had worked moments before and the only thing I'd changed was reboot the laptop.

Could anyone please provide any suggestions?

Thank you very much.

Maybe I was a little vague.. ^.^ When I mean "it worked", what I'm trying to get to happen here is for the laptop to access the shared dialup connection.

I have network group set up for 5 computers and everything is okay except 1 computer, lets call it X, cant access files from computer, Y, but there arent problems with Y getting into X. On computer X a login screen pops up for computer Y password but it doesnt have a password and it still wont let me in. would it be better to set a password or is there a way to bypass that screen?

A:Shared computers and 1 has problems

What operating system on computer Y?

If it is a version of Windows ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following commands:

nbtstat -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Hi to all,

I am wondering if something is possible, with my son's computer being infected with loads of Spyware?
As we are both using Windows XP Home (SR2 level) on our computers.
We are both linked to a broadband internet connection, through a router.
We both use Zonealarm Free for the firewall's.
And recently i have found that my son's computer, must have had a copy of every type of Spyware on it.
And no matter what i did, i could not get rid of it.
I searched through this forum's posts, but no matter what i tried i could not clean it up.

So i gave up and re-installed a Norton Ghost copy of his system over the partition he had as his C:\ drive.
I have updated his system again, Windows Update, Ad-Aware, a2, SpyBot, Spyware Blaster.
And i think that his system is now Spyware free (touch wood)

And my question's are:

Can my computer be affected by the same stuff he had on his computer?
As i had file problems on my computer and blue screens.
But, running the above programs nothing was found on my computer.

So to be on the safe side, i too have re-installed my computer's D:\ partition with a Norton Ghost backup.
Both computer's seem to be running faster now.
But, i am just curious about this, and if it could happen or not?

Many thanks.

As far as I know, Spyware doesn't travel through the network like a virus/trojan would. You need to go to an infected site and download the spyware for it to get on your system, I don't know of any Spyware "yet" that actively seeks out a victim (although, someone else might know more on this).

I would also recommend using an "online" anti-virus scanner to completement your current antivirus program. Since not every anti-virus program can catch everything, its a good practice to use a different scanner to scan your system periodically. Here's two that you can use...

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_frame.asp

Here's a site that can scan for trojans:

http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Use these scanners periodically like once a week to scan your system and help keep it clean...

Hope this helps!

I am new to this forum and have been searching the Internet for awhile now to try and solve this problem. I did search on here but didn?t seem to find a solution.

I have a HP PSC 1610V All-In-One printer that is shared on the network. It is cabled via USB to one of the work stations that is running Windows 7 Ultimate 64. I have another workstation identical to the one with the printer and it can use the printer with no problems. This tells me the printer is shared correctly.

A couple of months ago I bought a Gateway NV53 Laptop and it came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64. Now the problem begins. I have been trying to add the HP as a network printer to the laptop. It sees the printer since they are all on the same home group and when I try and finish the install I get an error message indicating that some files may be missing or corrupt. I can browse that workstation with the shared printer from the laptop so I m not thinking it has anything to do with security.

Next I tried to add it as a local device and telling it the IP Address of the share and it still tells me the files are missing or corrupt.

I downloaded the package again from HP all 328m and tried to install but it wants to install as a local device and wants me to connect the printer which I can?t since it will not be wired to this laptop.

So I then tried to point to the inf file but have no idea what it is and where it is. I did try several inf files that were in the package but every time it came back and... Read more

I recently transfer the MY MUSIC folder from my Documents into the shared docs folder to copy some files over a network. Now When I try to put the My Music folder back into my docs I get an error.... This folder is a system folder and cannot be renamed or removed.

Problem is this move has corrupted my Itunes folder... Can someone tell me how to unlock the folder to get it back into place. I have already tried a system restore and it failed. I need to do this one manually

Try moving it using Safe Mode, which you can access by rebooting and depressing the F8 key after the hardware is listed.

I've decided to post to this forum before I get to the point where I'm tearing hair out of my head. I'm hoping someone can help me out.

I have an HP Laserjet 1300 printer attached to a WinXP Pro machine via USB. It is shared so it can be mapped and used by other machines on the network- one of which is a Vista Home Premium machine, the rest of XP pro machines. Most/all of the machines are mapped to the host machines' IP address (\\192.168.200.104\hp1300).

Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when it decided it no longer wanted to work over the network. I've tested the printer locally from both the XP machine it's connected to, as well as by connecting it to the Vista machine. It works fine in both cases- quickly too.

Over the network, however, things aren't as smooth. The Vista machine starts complaining about a spooler error on the 'server'- and despite restarting the printer spooler service on the host XP box AND the Vista box (just in-case), nothing is resolved.
I have tried to map the printer on another XP pro machine on the network that did not previously have this printer mapped- and after it sits and 'thinks' for several seconds, it returns with an error: "Windows cannot connect to the printer..."

I have uninstalled the printer from it's host XP machine and reinstalled it- which didn't go very smoothly- I struggled to get it to 'see' the printer the first time, then I rebooted and it seemed just appear out of nowhere- no "adding ... Read more

Hello everyone, I've been having an unusual series of problems with my computer, and I was hoping I could get some advice...

I have a four-month old Toshiba notebook computer running Windows 7 Home Premium. Recently, I've had a problem where it would immediately crash upon start-up. I would be able to log on as the Administrator, and while it would run very slowly for this period, it would quickly freeze up, forcing me to restart. During this period, I was able to open Windows Task Manager, and didn't find any anomalous processes, or anything using more than 16,000K. Later, I've been unable to even get to my Desktop. I can log on, but then the screen goes completely black, apart from the cursor.

I'm able to run my computer in Safe Mode with Networking, but I haven't had much luck. I've run antivirus sweeps with Norton Antivirus and Windows Defender, neither of which found any problems. The only thing that (I think) found anything was AVG Antivirus running in Command Prompt, which seemed to find a slew of viruses in the TOSHIBA Games (the ones that came pre-loaded with the computer), a folder I promptly deleted. Nothing changed, however.

The catch his, my girlfriend's computer appears to be experiencing similar problems. She's on a much older Toshiba notebook running Windows Vista, and we share a network. When her computer boots up normally, it sends her to a black screen, with the cursor visible. Hers will not load in Safe Mode,... Read more

Wow what a mess. I can not solve your problem but may be able to provide you with hints for trouble shooting.. If i was working on that computer I would want to determine if the start up issue is coming from the internet or not. start computer with no internet connection. if needed you can go into the bios to shut down wireless lan but most toshibas have a power switch for the wireless.
If start up is still bad then try shutting down programs that are starting as you turn on your computer. from safe mode (accessed by pressing the F8 key over and over as your computer is booting), go to the start button which for some reason no longer says start but is rather a ball with a windows logo on it? /in the box that says "search programs and files" type msconfig then press enter. this should open a window on your screen "System Configuration" choose the startup tab. then choose the Disable all button. press OK and your computer will want to restart. let it. If you had more than three Items with check marks in the boxes chances are that was your startup problem. If that fixes your computer you may go back int msconfig and the startup tab and add checks to the stuff you want to start I.E. avg or the antivirus of your choice I think it best to choose just one. no more than one for best performance.

If start up is still bad then restart into safe mode, go to the start button/ All Programs/ Accessories/ System Tools/ System Restore/ Choose a different restore point/... Read more

I live in a shared house, we have one internet connection (with a wireless router) which we share the bill for. Is it possible for one computer to dominate the bandwith (if that is the correct term, you know what I mean!) and cause the other to have an extremely slow internet connection? If so, can anything be done to solve this?
