Preferred Solution: LOST all my desktop items and this thing is wiggen something fierce!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello everyone!

I'm a newbie to the world of fixing computer problems. It appears that my computer is riddled with Spyware and a about:blank Hijack as well. I have ran a couple different free Spyware removals and purchased one and still have not had luck getting my browser back or stopping all the pop ups. Short of calling someone and paying them to come out here and fix all this junk, is there any other things I can do to try to fix this? I'm really concerned about this stuff on my computer particularly for security issues, ect...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've searched and I get not even one link on this. I have a clean install of Windows 7 plus Firefox and Dell Drivers.. My problem is it creates a ghost like file that really isn't there because if I delete one, the other becomes inaccessible and I have to manually refresh using F5. Also, when I restart my computer it also is creating duplicates of files and shortcuts. Even when I install software it creates two short cuts.. I can deal with having to manually refresh, but I cannot deal with it creating duplicates of everything.
Here is an image that will further confuse you.

A:Desktop creating two copies of files when moving items to desktop..

I can't see anything other than a folder shortcut in your snip? But, with your problem, have you by chance "taken ownership" of any system folders - particularly the "Documents and Settings" folder. This action can often produce the effects you are experiencing.

Hi
it happened that i formated my hard disk completely and removed all partions on it
including the System Recovery Partition

I have an image i made earlier when i first got my computer

the problem now is that i cant restore the image that i have
every time i try to restore i get this error : The disk that is set as active in BIOS is too small to recover the original disk

what i am doing wrong here, or did i lost for good?

appreciate your help ... i have been trying for more than 12 hours now

A:I have the image but i cant restore it - LOST EVERY THING :'(

I'm assuming you created an image of your hard drive before you formatted the drive.

Now that you've installed Windows 7 it will have created a small 100Mb partition that will be marked as Active and holds the master boot record for your operating system.

I would imagine your image is looking for the recovery partition, which you've deleted and therein lies your problem.

Unless I'm mistaken you'll only be able to restore the image you created if you put your hard drive back to the state it was when you created the image of the drive.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure our experts will point us in the right direction.

Hi, I've been backing up data on my computer only to open up recycle bin the other day and find most of the files missing. I was very confused. Then i realised i had recently deleted 2 or 3 large files in size of 2 or more gb and that the recycle bins capacity is 4gb Has recycle bin deleted my older items because there wasn't enough space? I need to find or restore the old files. Im guessing the recycle bin dir in c: has now been modified showing the current status. Can i recover any older recycle bin dir or any files which list the files that were in recycle bin before is was modified and deleted old files? I have tried free undelete programs but they all only show the current recycle bin contents, i need to find the old contents. I also mucked around with some security settings of recycle bin and corrupted it. I had to empty it. Does this mean a new recycle bin file has been made? How can i restore the old contents.

Thankyou.

A:Lost recycle bin items

Things shouldn't go in the trash unless you want to get rid of them. Chances are that the files have been partially or totally overwritten and unrecoverable. Any chance at recovery was lost when you kept using the machine. When files are lost, you should shut down immediately so they won't get overwritten and then move the drive to another machine for recovery.

If the recovery apps can't find anything, they are probably gone for good.

Hi:
I use Outlook 2003 to synchronize with my Sony Clie handheld. This has always worked great to keep my appts, contact etc organized and synched with my handheld and desktop. On my last synch, all my old calender items disappeared (except recurring items). Future appts and other folders such as contacts, to do list etc seem unaffected. Old appts as recent as yesterday are gone! I don't see them in archived items, but I'm not sure I know how to correctly view these. Does anyone know where they might have gone? Can they be restored?

IE 7

I don't know when the problem began, but I suspect it began when I upgraded [ ?? ] to IE 7.

First noticed 07 April when I created a new user account [ administrator group ].

Problem occurs with all users.

System Restore is not an option because I have made many changes since adding IE 7.

I also use FF. I do not want this to become an IE vs FF thread.

I tried these:
http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumID=101&threadID=206730&messageID=2153179
Go into the registry and look for the registry key...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet\IEXPLORE.EXE\DefaultIcon

I'll bet yours looks as mine did and has...

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe,-7.

What it should be is...

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe,-32528

AND

http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumID=101&threadID=206730&messageID=2427273
I was browsing through the registry and I found the same key as you ending -702. This is the wrong key, if you go one level lower you will find the key ending on -7. When you change this one it does work.

Neither of which worked.

That which restored the IE desktop icon:
Tip #100 at http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm
HOWEVER
The Display properties, customize destop, "desktop items", "general" tab does NOT allow for the selection / deselection of IE. See screen shot.

Thanks for your help.

Something has happened, in my sound and audio devices, under sound tab, several sound icons are missing ????? there are 8 or so icons still there, that seem to work. I noticed this the other day, when my email did not talk to me,,, went to this tab,, and there was no email icon to choose. Set at Windows default,,,, this did mis-behave for a while,,, somehow the email ntify would be set to no sound, I would have to reset it, now email icon is gone ???

I am thinking this is a Windows thing, not a sound card/driver thing. Is there any way to restore the Sound properties, from the WinXP cd or download ????

A:Lost items in sound properties

It seems you're missing some registry keys for the sound events.

Go to Start / Run / type regedit

Look under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\EventLables if any of the keys on the screenshot are missing. You might have to import the reg files from another computer.

Did you restore the folder that files were in too? If not and it is still in the Recycle Bin, then restore that too. Or Go to Search and type in the name of one of the files, and see if it finds it.

I am tearing my hair out over this problem!
When I right click on any folder or subfolder, I get the usual send to options (desktop, email recipient etc.). However, if I click on a file within any of these folders, the send to option is blank. I have been "playing around" with folder and file permissions to solve a problem related to sending files over my home network. I just can't seem to get the right combination of permissions to have the send to option work for all folders and files.
I run XP Home (SP2) up to date with all security updates.
Two screen shots are attached; the first shows the advanced security settings for a folder for which the right click/send to works. The second screen shot shows the same settings for a file within the folder; the send to option does not work for this file.
Can anyone help me out with this annoying and frustrating problem?

I noticed I had 2 music and picture folders in My Documents. I deleted the Folders that had been moved when I reloacated. When I went back to the start menu, My Music and My Pictures were gone. I looked in properties, and the two items were selected. I went to the registry and the entries for music and pictures were gone in UserShellFolders and ShellFolders. I recreated the entries. After all of this, there are still no icons for Music and Pictures on the start menu. Can anybody help me out here?

I am burned out with MSN tech support. My MSN email problems have been going on since November. OK, I started out with missing Sent Items emails on My Computer under MSN. After the recent action of copying the Mail (MyEmailAddress) folder back over to MSN/db from db30 on my desktop, now I have lost all emails stored on my computer if I try to access those emails using MSN. So, is there any way possible to restore the hundreds of MSN emails I stored on my computer. The MSN emails from My Computer are stored in the db folder. The db30 folder has contents measuring 164 megabytes. I think the db30 is the backup for the db but I am not sure. Is there any way to access, restore, or bring back the emails I can no longer access? Thank you in advance for any replies.

I just happened to check my Sent Items folder in my Windows Live Mail a few minutes ago. I keep 3 months of Sent items there (delete older ones on the 1st of each month), so there should be ~100+ emails in the folder. There are 6, 4 of which were sent within the last couple of days, plus two that are a month or so old.

The only software I installed today was Silverlight to run some Amazon prime movies. Could that have corrupted the storage folder. Is there any way to retrieve the missing e-mails?

I had a friend crash at my place for a while and he used my computer - probably my first mistake. Now I have this thing on my desktop and I have no idea what it is or how it got there - I have an attached picture to show what it looks like. It doesn't appear in the Task Manager or msconfig, and isn't recognized by Ad-Aware, Spybot, or the latest Norton definitions. It only pops up when logging onto my Windows profile, no other profile has it on the desktop. I can't right click to see properties, but I can drag and drop it anywhere on the desktop. Scrolling over the boxes pops up a list of topic-related internet links, which doesn't work when my internet connection is shut off. It closes immediately with the 'close' button, but reappears with every profile log-on. I hope these descriptions of it help out, cause I'm pretty lost. Any and all help with getting this crap off of my computer would be appreciated.

A:Get this thing off my desktop!

Download HiJackThis - this program will help determine if there's any malware on your computer.

1. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.

2. Click on the "Unzip" button to install the newer version.

3. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\HiJackThis\

4. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose - Do a system scan and save a logfile.

5. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit [Scan] and then click on Save log.

6. Post the HiJackThis.log file here.

Howdy all,
I'm not an expert, don't know the language, sorry. I am a long-time user, though. I'd upgraded to Win-10 back in summer, hated it, and restored back to Win-7. But I lost my recent items list. Or rather, the pinned applications' recent items list, for example, for Excel, or Word, or any of them. I waited to see if they would repopulate as I used the programs, but they haven't done so. It would be nice to have that back, if possible.
Thank you for any advice -

Hi, I was on the computer recently and noticed a tiny tiny blue dot in the top left hand corner. When I say tiny I mean really really tiny. I tried clicking on it to no avail but found I could drag it around the desktop. As I dragged it away from corner I saw the actual shape of the icon, not a dot anymore. Let click does nothing. Right click, nothing. Can't drag it to the trashbin. Don't know what it is or where it came from. Spybot & Adaware do nothing. The bottom "window" changes color and when I shut the computer off it goes off first, but comes back when the computer is turned back on. I will attach a picture of what it looks like. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

A:Need help with weird desktop thing!

I would like to help, but TSF won't let me see the attachment as it says that I don't have sufficient priveleges to veiw the attachment.

If I could just make the Now Playing Mode of Windows Media Player to be transparent/see-through, then I could have a perfect desktop.

yo dudes,

first of all, thank you for the free help i can get here.

this is the problem: i have a desktop pc, but my dvd-thing is dead. I have a dead laptop too and I unscrewed it completely, I salvaged the dvd-thing(which works) but there doesn't seem to be a way to connect it to my desktop motherboard.

can it be done?
thank you

A:laptop dvd-thing -> desktop?

If it is a standard ide laptop drive, you could use a slim drive
to IDE adapter.
Something like this..............
http://cgi.ebay.com/Laptop-Notebook-Slim-CD-DVD-Rom-Drive-IDE-Adapter-/190391546425?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c54387239
Or an external case...........
http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_trkparms=65%253A12%257C66%253A2%257C39%253A1%257C72%253A4410&_nkw=slim+drive+case&_dmpt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal&_sop=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Probably cheaper and easier to use the external case as you would need some kind
of 5.25" bay adapter to mount the drive in the computer.
Replacement drivers aren't that expensive nowadays either.
You can get a DVD burner for about $20 on newegg.com.

Yup, that's the problem, there's a random thing on my desktop, it looks like an egg wearing a beanie cap (really) about the size of an icon, that no matter what I do floats on the top of my desktop.

I've scanned everything with Norton anti-virus and have NO CLUE what it is or how to get rid of it. . .

Any ideas??? Please e-mail me!!!!!

Ok, I have a strange problem that in all my years of using a computer I have never before seen. When my desktop is set in 32 bit mode and the resolution is 1440x900 or higher the edges are cut off. But if I move my mouse to the edges of the screen the view moves with it to show the hidden parts, I can do this with all four sides. The only things I have installed recently is the newest drivers for my audio and graphics card. Also when ever I start up any games it does this as well. But I assume it does it in games because the game puts it in 32 bit mode. If I'm not playing a game and my comp is set in 16 or 8 bit modes it does not do this.

WinXP Pro 32bit
Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT x2 (SLI)
Pentium 4 Dual Core 2.20GHz

Yesterday I downloaded the Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP for media purposes. Today, I turned on my computer, and went to move something on my desktop to a different folder, and as soon as I put it in the folder my computer restarted. When I logged back in, it says Windows has Recovered from a Serious Error. I just thought it was a bug so I continued to organize my desktop and it happened again. If anyone knows why this is happening please tell me :)

A:Weird Desktop Thing

try running start > run and type "chkdsk /f" and restart. Then look for and read through the chkdsk.log file it creates to see if there were any errors. It's usually located at C:\

Well, on my desktop I have this.

It's really annoying, and it kind of "sucks up" any windows that are on it, as you can see in that image - it was my start menu.

It's kind of like a 3d bump on my desktop.

Can anyone help me remove this annoying thing?

I sat at my computer and turned it on after it had been in sleep mode, and in the top right corner I noticed a strange small "box" with "Tajikistan" written, and beneath it something like "0mb". I restarted the computer and it isn't currently there, but any idea what it is?

Take a screenshot and post it in your topic.

How to make a screenshot

1. Download and run A Thousand Words .

2. Follow the wizard to capture a screenshot

3. Use the built-in editor to resize, edit, or re-capture your screen shot.

4. Your screen shot will be saved to your desktop when you finish the wizard.

You can post the screenshot in your next post as an attachment.

Just below the area where you write text in a post there is the Post button, to the right of this is More Reply Options.

When you click on More Relpy Options  you will see Attach Files and Browse, click on Browse, this will open Pictures on your computer, click on the image you want to post, then click on Attach This File, then Add Reply.

I heard that if you have a lot of files on your desktop, that when you log in to your profile, all those files are loaded and this slows down the log in and uses memory resources. Is this true? Thank in advance.

A:Desktop Items

True.

Desktop is actually a folder whose contentes are displayed by default. Much quicker to just place a shortcut to the folder that contains the files on the desktop instead.
