Folder Setting Lost

Q: Folder Setting Lost

I set all folder to general template as per Brinks tutorial which works great. I then set folders view to "list" only at some point (maybe a couple hours, maybe two or three days) to have it revert back to default "details view". Messed with this for months with every suggestion I could find on the web but it was not to be. Being extremely irritated with this and quite hard headed, I was determined. I have almost succeeded in the goal thru a massive amount of trial and error. 98% of this issue is caused by cleaning programs of which I run several. Yeah, I know some say they are bad some say they are good. I've been a proponent of cleaners since the Windows 95 days ONLY if you have the knowledge to use them correctly. Using cleaners has resulted in my having rare issues with any Windows OS when everyone else had issues.

The cleaners I use have certain options that must be stopped:
1. Window Washer > Wash Setup > Windows & Pro (whatever you use) > Windows System > Edit > uncheck "Registry streams"
2. CCLeaner > Windows tab > Advanced list > uncheck "Windows Size/Location Cache"
3. RegVac > Expert Zone > Scan & Clean > uncheck "MRU and History Lists"
4. RegAce no issues
5. Windows 7 Disk Cleanup no issues

This has almost completely stopped the folder settings from reverting back to default. The now rare times it does happen, I have not been able to pinpoint the cause but will keep trying.

Does anyone know of any other happenings that cause this issue?

ps I use a lot of Brinks tutorials for everything on my computer, thanks Shawn!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I'm in a folder and changes the folder view from, say, List to Extra Large Icons, the folder view changes for all the folders on my computer, which is a royal PITA. Is there any way to change the folder view only in the folder I'm in at the time and leave the setting for the other folders as is? Example: have picture folders set for Extra Large Icons and some document folders set for List and others, Details.

You mean you hide it? If that what happened, just change the folder view setting to show up the hidden folders.

If that isn't what happened, then elaborate the situation much more.

In Thunderbird - Tools > Options > General > and tick the options for default mail and news applications.

You can make it your system default mail/news program also (for Windows) by - Start > Set Program Access and Defaults and you'll see the options.

There is a Firefox default mail icon you can drag and drop onto a toolbar from - Right click a toolbar and select customize, you'll see the default icons.

Try this:
Right click on the desktop and choose Properties> Themes tab. Then on the drop down, choose: Browse and browse to:

Alright, so, fun fun fun fun fun fun fun FUN problem (I'm enraged at the moment). Had it for months. This close to sending this laptop with it's demon-spawn of an operating system (Windows 8) straight back to HP to have it fixed. But I digress; the problem. Images, web browsers, videos, games, icons for games, icons for programs, sample images, the tiny image that pops up when you hover your mouse over the left hand corner, EVERYTHING is pixelated! Not unbearably, but noticeably. It's as if the resolution on everything has been broken, like everything is stretched out of proportion. In games, it's like the anti-aliasing has decided to take a vacation. There has never been a more wretched hive of graphical errors and unnecessary lag as in my computer. It would be enough if it just affected games, wouldn't it? But oh no. Not this problem. It's like, "Screw it, imma mess everything else up too. Hey, you like that image on some random website, probably of a cat or something? SOILED IT." Everything has jagged edges, everything has weird shading issues; I can deal with it, but I'd rather not have to. I've done everything this computer will let me: I ran a system recovery which promised to wipe my settings but leave my files untouched (spoiler alert: it didn't), I've run a factory reset that, PLOT TWIST, wasn't the actual factory reset! I ran the REAL factory reset (I made a set of nifty disks and all), pretty much made my computer brand-new, and the problem STILL REMAINS. It may be... Read more

A:For want of a setting, the image was lost...

First of all - Welcome to BC !  Second - calm down, take a deep breath and try to relax, you are among friends !

I don't think it is a software issue since you say you did a factory re-set unless you re-installed this auto-clicker AFTER you did the re-set. You didn't, did you ?  If you did, uninstall it as soon as possible - 'Charms - Settings - Control panel - Programs and features'. You may also need to download the 'Revo Uninstaller' from

www.piriform.com

to remove any fragments that remain after the uninstall, Revo is very good at that, and comes with a very good uninstaller if you don't want to keep it.

Assuming that the problem continues after removing any traces of this application you are probably right about it being a hardware problem and, if the computer is still in warranty, it is time raise the matter with your supplier or HP.

I somehow lost my account when I added a user account for my roomate. I set him up with an administrator account as well as me having an account. When I logged back into my acount, the original administrator account, it was as if I was logging in for the first time. I want to know if there is a way to get my old settings back and have access to my files.

Here are some of my observations.

1) All programs act like it is the first time i have used them
2) My Documents, My Music, and My Pictures are empty, but I can find all my old documents and files if I navigate to them through My Computer

Can I restore my old account setting, is it hiding somewhere, how did i cause this to happen?

If anyone can help me out, I'd really appreciate it, thank you.

I am having a recurring problem with my W2K in that it is regularly losing its user settings. I think I know the cause of this, but my question is related to re-capturing old settings, once the original is lost.

When I go under my Documents and Settings folders, there are now 3 settings all for the same name (user), but 2 are modified with an extension, obviously related to the computer name...

Obviously, the latter 2 were created by W2K after pradhan could no longer be loaded...for whatever reason.

My question is, does anyone know where these are managed and what is the best way to backup and recover a user setting? Can those not being used be dumped or renamed somewhere, maybe in the registry?

Finally, the cause I believe is comes as a result of W2K usage on the road when I am not networked. My brother (an IT guy) says its a known glitch in W2K, that if it expects a network present and then you turn the computer on/off sans network (such as when traveling), W2K often does not close properly.

Within the Mac OS there is a preference you can set that allows applications to remember what the last-accessed folder was when using the open/save dialogue boxes.

For example, if I'm using Photoshop and storing all my images in a folder called 'RawImages' then the next day when I go to open a file it is looking in 'RawImages'.

Is there any equivalent settings or preference within Windows 2000?

Most programs default to the "My documents" folder, however you probably can edit the path for the program to save work files. Check the documentation for the program in question.

Try booting to Safe Mode, or try Enable VGA Mode if that doesn't work.
Tap F8 as the PC starts up to get the Advanced Options screen.

Last known good configuration probably won't make a difference since Windows is booting successfully, it's just the Monitor can't work with the current video settings.

Hi! I hope someone can help me with this. Before "homegroups" in Win 7, I used to have my computers in a home network, see both computers on my network, and then put a shortcut to a shared folder on my desktop and my roommate's. Then my roommate or I would just go there to check on a file the other had just put there, or I could send her a file, she could work on it and put it back. I have been struggling with homegroups like crazy, I can't get the computers to see each other, and I can't even find a way to put a shortcut on my desktop! What can I do to do this "the old way"? A:Setting Folder Views

Apply to all Folders is not available if you open Folder Options from the Control Panel, or if you were in Computer, Favorites (Not IE Favorites) or a folder that is contained in a Library.

You have to open it from the Organize | Folder and search options when not in one of the three named above.

For example for My Documents, you have to go to C:\Users\<User Name>\My Documents, not Libraries | Documents | My Documents

OK, firstly, I know what is wrong. Not exactly sure HOW I did it, but I know WHAT I did.

In an attempt to change the icon of one of my folders, I somehow managed to change the default action when double-clicking on a folder. Instead of opening, it opens in a "Search" window. I can still access the folder by right clicking and selecting "Open" from the menu, but it's quite a pain in the ***.

Now, as far as I can ascertain, the way to change that setting is to go to: Tools -> Folder Options... -> File Types tab -> select File Folder in the list -> Advanced. When I select advanced, new window opens up and gives you a list of "Actions". The only action available is "find". Now, when I look go back to the list where I chose File Folder, Folder is also an option. (I have no idea what the difference between Folder and File Folder is, but I'm pretty sure that File Folder is the one that I've managed to screw up.) When I look at the advanced options of the "Folder", the actions listed there are "explore" and "open", "open" being the default. I'm assuming "open" is the option that I want, but don't know how to get. Now, going back to File Folders, to the right of where it lists actions, there are some options: New..., Edit..., Remove, Set Default. If I click New... it asks for "Action:" and "Application used to perform this action:". Now, ... Read more

OK, something a bit different.

Background: Recently re-installed Vista on fresh hard disk following a drive failure.
Now: Re-configuring multiple user accounts from scratch to keep everything nice and clean.
My wife's user account wallpaper on old drive was set to an image file that we had downloaded.
Now I can't find it! (and it was important to her.)

I'm sure the image is stored on the complete hard disk backup we were able to take, but I can't remember the filename (nor, of course, where we wrote it!)
So I was hoping someone from BC would be able to point me towards a file (in the backup) which stores the wallpaper filename.
(Or a likely place for writing a wallpaper file, other than C:\windows\web\wallpapers )

A:'Lost' wallpaper image file -- where is setting stored?

Well ... You evidently already know where the default background images are stored. But a custom image that you downloaded sometime in the past could be stored almost anywhere. I would start with the Start menu, and select Documents. If you don't find it there move to the Pictures folder. If you still can't locate it, try the Search feature. It would be easier if you remembered the name or part of it but start your search with *.jpg or *.gif and you'll catch most of them. A little advance warning though, you may have quite a few images stored on the unit.

I'm running Windows XP Pro. I'm wondering if there's any way to change the default folder settings. I view 99% of my folders in the detailed view, organized by type. Unfortunately, I have to change each folders settings individually to view them like this, and then sometimes it forgets. I'd much rather change the default folder settings to the detailed view organized by type and then just change the select few that I view in, say, thumbnails (e.g. My Pictures) by hand. I was thinking maybe if XP doesn't have this option for the average user there was something I could change in the registry. Thanks for your help.

Try this:-
Open My computer or Windows Explorer and set the folders to be display in detail view and organise by type.

Then, click the Tools menu and choose Folder Options
Click the View tab and click the button "Like Current Folder"

any folder you open should display the files and folders in this format.

Hope this helps

windows xp has annoyed me thusfar only because i constantly set 'my documents' folder to icon view but any time i enter it it's back on tile view, this isn't a massive problem but any help is appreciated.

the big annoyance i have is that i'm an avid Half-Life 2 and Counter Strike source map developer and this means i regularly spend time trawling through folders for texture files, routines ad configs and each time i access a folder it is in icon view whereas i can only fully browse the media i'm interested in if it is in list or deatiled view.

thus can anyone give me tips on either how to set multiple folders within a mother folder to the same view setting or how to stop folders reverting back to 'tile' view after i have set it to another view.

basiacally any time i change a read/write issue etc i am given the option to apply this setting to all subfolders, but i wonder if there is a way to apply <folder view> settings to all sub folders.

A:setting multiple folder views

I don't know if there is a way to do what you want (maybe a utility on the web somewhere?), but these two things may help, especially the second one.

In any folder window, Tools - Folder options... - View tab.

At the top is the ability to apply view settings to ALL folders (not just sub folders).

About 6 lines from the bottom is an option to Remember each folder's view settings.

Hi All,

I have had many problems since I installed Vista Ultimate, both major and minor. I have solved some and am still working on others. I won't try to adress them all now. The problem with folder view settings is one of the most aggravating, though not operationally significant. Still, it does CONSTANTLY Piss Me Off. Pardon my language, but it IS appropriately descriptive. Regardless of whatever settings I choose, the next time I go to that folder or any other, they have reverted to some set of system defaults, which I CAN'T CHANGE. Several I don't use and some I don't want or actually get in the way of what I want to do, such as "AutoArrange". (If I ever meet the person who invented "AutoArrange" I will probably be arrested for assault.)

Does ANYONE know what I can do to set my folders the way I want them and retain the settings?

Dear God, how can I explain how frustrating this has been...Ok, so just a very brief back story, my job has a shared Toshiba file, where all scanned documents, and received faxes can be viewed as PDFs. Everything was fine until my computer (Windows XP) crashed, and I rebooted it with Windows 7. Everything else has been fine, but resetting up this file has been a nightmare. After about 15 calls, someone was finally able to create a folder that worked yesterday, however today it is back to the drawing board. Additionally, the folder that was set up was NOT the same one that my co-workers use, which is fine as long as I can access the data, but for whatever reason it is not working...I don't know if it has to do with the network path, the file name, or what.

Now, I am definitely hooked up to the network, and I definitely have network discovery on. Password protect is not on so that anyone can view the shared documents. If it makes any difference, the printer/copier/fax machine/scanner is a Toshiba E-Studio202L machine. When I click homegroup/sharing options, everything is checked off...I really do not know what the problem is, as the documents are just not getting forwarded to my folder (or any folder). If anyone could provide any assistance I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you!

A:Folder details view setting

Pictures and videos are generally uploaded to different folders, so the settings in each of the folders should be independent from the other. But if, for some reason, you have your pictures + videos in the same folder, I think the only way you could do that would be a work-around --- to manually transfer all of your pictures or videos to a separate folder. That way, in each of the folders, by right-clicking on the settings options and selecting 'More' at the bottom of the list, you have several hundred specific options to choose from and select.

Though I am a newbie to the forums - I'm no newbie to windows or tinkering with it. I have a specific quesion regarding the way Vista displays items in a folder and folder settings. Is there a way to have vista to always display items in a folder grouped by file type as opposed to viewing by name EVEN if the folder is brand new OR if you've never viewed inside of the folder (i.e. just created and placed items in it)?

For example - I want the following to be my default for every time a folder is created (and subsequently viewed)

Columns shown (in this order)
Name, size, Date Modified, Type, Tags

Grouped by type

Shown in Detail View

I also want for the window size to default to a size that I set based upon an existing window (I like for my windows to be wide and not the narrow/small default size that vista gives). And i want for the column sizes to be the default for what I customize.

Is there a regisitry change I have to make in order for these settings to be the default and not something that I have to customize for each and every folder and window (trust me this gets annoying after the 3rd window).

I've read through some of the Folder View tutorials in this forum and didn't see anything that would resolve my issue. I didn't have this issue in Windows XP. Once I customized a folder and window the way I wanted it to - once I 'told' windows to apply to all folders - it did just that. Any tips would be appreciated.

Thank you.

A:Specific Folder Setting question

Hello roa78 and welcome to the forums.

I am sure that there is a way to set this (might only be in the registry though...). I just don't know what it is off the top of my head. I will have to look it up later. I might suggest looking on the internet, as sometimes you can find stuff.

Have WinXP Home on one machine and Pro on others. I'm trying to set user permissions on folders and printers. I found a page at microsoft.com that says do the following in the Windows XP Pro machine:

"Click Start> My Computer> Tools> Folder Options> View. In the Advanced Settings sections . . . ".

I don't have an advanced settings section. I am guessing it is because we are running FAT32 and we need NTFS for this Advanced Settings section to show. Is this correct?

On the Windows XP Home machine, we are running NTFS; but, I assume we don't have an Advanced Settings sections on it because that section is not available in the Home edition and we need XP Pro. Is this correct?

Does anyone know of a method of setting a default folder view for a folder on a CD ROM?

What I want is to have a folder on a CD ROM that opens with Thumbnail view set by default.

One thought I had was to autoplay a script that launched explorer.exe and somehow set the view (not sure how to set the view from a script).

I don't want to depend on web view being enabled.

thanks,
Robert

Hi all,

Relatively simple problem, I have just explained it in great detail do please give a read

I was just wondering how I would go about setting the picture on a folder to be what I want, but to have it set, like using a .dat file or something.. What I am trying to do is organize my music collection, which is quite large, and I want to set the cd covers for each album as the picture on the folder. I know how to do it normally (right click>properties>customize>choose file), but sometimes the picture won't stay there, so if I go back to the location of that folder again, it will just be a normal yellow folder, or have a picture of the audio symbol (because there are audio files in the folder). I would like to be able to 'hardwire' it as such, and make it always show the picture I want, regardless of anything else that happens.

I have all my music on an external hard drive which I don't keep plugged in, only when I want to listen to music. As the location of this post would suggest, I have Vista, Home Premium.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated

Luke

Just purchased a notebook and am running Windows 8.1.

I right-clicked on the "Documents" folder and selected Properties.

In the "Attributes" section, the "Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)" is ticked.

I'm reading this to mean that I will not be able to save changes to any files in that folder, as they will be read-only. Is this correct and why is the folder set by default to this setting?

A:[SOLVED] Read-Only Setting In Folder

Hello tomahawk,

Is the item ticked (check mark in the box) or partially ticked (box filled by square).

If it is partially ticked, it just means that something in that folder (sub directory/system file) is set to Read Only, but you will be able to save files, over-write files, delete files and edit files as usual.

I have tried all the tried and true Vista user fixes to re-set permissions on the Fonts folder. I have enabled the REAL administrator user on my computer, logged in as administrator, then used the elevated cmd to attempt direct delete, and I'm still denied access to delete these files! There is nothing on the MSA site to even refer to this issue. I don't have any additional language packs or keyboard language groups installed, etc., etc., I want to delete several of the MS Bloated International fonts (not the ones used by the system), but even though I am sole user, and sole administrator, I am denied delete, reset read-only and reset folder permissions, even when run from the cmd line in Safe Mode! If you have a work-around, let me know how to do it! Thanks!

Hi

My hard drive consist of two partitions, one for System, and one for my stuff, programs, movies and so on...

Computer has three accounts, me as Administrator and two that are limited.

Here is what I want to do:
- I have movies at other partition, and some important stuff, so I set permissions that only my account can access partition...
- My brother wishes to watch movies from his account, and sometimes I am not at home, and I am afraid to give him my password
- There is about 30 different folders on that partition, so is it possible to allow other users access only to Movies folder, without having to set permissions to each folder manually...

Hope you understood my question? Thanks

A:Setting permissions to single folder

Setting permissions can be challenging to some. One option you should consider is to get and external usb hard drive, place the movies on it. Then you won't have to worry about access to your profile. Then he can log on to his account and view them.

I am trying to change the security settings for the folder DVD Maker under Program Files. I go into 'Edit' for the security and all the boxes are greyed out. I tried booting into Safe Mode and get the same thing. I tried doing this under user name and also as Administrator, same thing. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

A:Can't change security setting for a folder

Hi, the account you are logged on with, does it have admin privileges? You can use the Icacls util to grant ownership OR use the take ownership mod here:-

Add "Take Ownership" to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Win 7, 8 or Vista

EDIT:- I don't know the program you reference however you might need to right click on the programs executable and select "properties" under the general tab if you see "unblock" click on this to unblock it. Then run the ownership mod.

Recently I've found a few of my regular folders defaulting to detail view after so long. I think certain games that change resolution might be affecting this as it only happened recently and has become frequent. This doesn't affect all folders, only certain key ones. I don't want them resetting to detail view. I have tried setting optimuzed view for folders but this always resets.

How can I just lock the view for folders? I want some to stay as large icons, other as list and this constant resetting is getting annoying.

I have found Windows 7 lacking in its ability to remember windows settings, aka, amnesia.

The perfect solution, at least that I have found, is ShellFolderFix: http:http://www.sevenforums.com/customization/40916-shellfolderfix-manage-folder-window-positions-size.html//

new to Windows 7

.windows 7.fresh out of the box, first time being turned on, whats the VERY first step towards having the same options applied to ALL folders and seeing the same options the second/third time you use windows explorer?

All previous versions gave us a list of steps to set folder options......we'd go through the steps.....youre options might be fine ...........now, but the next time you use windows explorer, your options are......not there.
Nobody ever knew how to permanently set folder options in all previous windows versions.

is it the same with windows 7

do we still have to change options on each folder that we need to?
each time we use that folder?

I haven't yet tried and I'm not touchin' folder options untill i see what you folks have to say.
