Can you upgrade for free to windows 10, downgrade back to windows 8.1, and then upgrade again?

Q: Can you upgrade for free to windows 10, downgrade back to windows 8.1, and then upgrade again?

Title basically says it all. I used to be using Windows 8.1, and I upgraded for free. After using windows 10 for a week i got a blue screen that said "bad_system_config_info" and restarting does not fix it. It is stuck on the blue screen after restarting. So, i was thinking I could use the option on the blue screen that it gives me to downgrade to previous version, but I would still like to use windows 10. So, if I downgrade, could I then upgrade again for free? (I am still within my 30 days to downgrade) Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you have any other solution to this blue screen that would allow me to stay on windows 10 and keep all of my files and apps, that would be even better. Thank you!

The initial error that came up while I was using my PC like normal:

Options ("Continue" and "turn off PC" just take me back to this)

Options Under "troubleshoot" option that was shown above. (I've tried a system restore, but it does not work. I have no "system image recovery", so doesn't work. Start up repair doesn't work. So, "go back to previous build" is my last resort, which is the reason for my question in the first place. I would like to downgrade then upgrade back to windows 10, but not sure if i can.

Preferred Solution: Can you upgrade for free to windows 10, downgrade back to windows 8.1, and then upgrade again?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Can you upgrade for free to windows 10, downgrade back to windows 8.1, and then upgrade again?

Yes, I believe you can. Windows 10 is free for at least the first year from release.
You can still get the Windows 10 ISO downloade and be able to upgrade using that instead of the downloaded installation files too.

Hi Guys,  I have a HP Envy M6 Sleekbook. It came with Windows 7, and its warranty expired 2 years ago. I took the offer to get a free Windows 10 upgrade a few months ago. Now I want to swap the hard drive out. I have a system recovery ready to go on a USB stick, but its for the Windows 7 factory setup....   My question: Is there a way I can swap drives and get Windows 10 back without paying? HPO only lets you create a USB system recovery drive once, so I cant seem to make a new recovery drive with windows 10. When i get the factory Windows 7 up and running on the new hard drive, will I be able to upgrade to Windows 10 again since I already had it and just wanted to swap drives?  Thanks!!

This link should get you started: Windows 10 Upgrade   You can either install Windows 7 with your recovery disks and then upgrade to Windows 10 or you can create Windows 10 installation media [USB/DVD/ISO] and use it to do a 'clean' install onto the new hard drive. Notes about activation: If you?ve never installed and activated Windows 10 on this computer before, you?ll see the activation screen. Enter your Windows 10 key here. If you don?t have one, but you have a valid 7, 8, or 8.1 key, enter it here instead. If you?ve ever installed and activated Windows 10 on this computer before, click ?I don?t have a product key?. Windows will automatically activate once it?s installed.  If you found my answer helpful please say thanks by clicking on the Thumb's Up icon.          If my answer solved your problem please mark it as the Accepted Solution. Hi there, A friend recently brought me their Pavilion g6 as it was running very slowly. I can confirm that it runs about as fast as an opiate infused sloth! When I checked the Disk usage via Task Manager I noticed that it rarely falls below 70% and is regularly maxed out at 100% even when the machine is idle and not connected to any network. That problem is something I've seen now on several machines - all running Windows 10. I think that problem is compounded by the fact that the specs of the Pavilion g6 would struggle to keep up, even with a clean and properly functional Windows 10 install. (the machine in question was updated via Microsoft's automated, free upgrade offer). My intention is to reinstall Windows 7 for my friend. That's what the laptop originally shipped with and it ran perfectly well prior to the Windows 10 upgrade. Unfortunately the upgrade renders the recovery partition a moot point. Furthermore, as it has been a lot more than 10 days since the upgrade - rolling back is not an option. When I tried to download an ISO from Microsoft, I was prompted with the following message: "ErrorThe product key you've entered appears to be for software which was pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options." Hence I am now writing in the HP forum in the hopes of finding an answer to my inherited woes. Could this problem be compounded by the SLP system that locks a key ... Read more

Hi there,

I'm sorting out a Christmas present to my step dad who has been very good to me this year and i'm running up against some problems.

He has a windows vista PC that is causing him no end of problems. Viruses everywhere, problems with certain functions etc so i said i'd sit down over christmas and completely wipe everything for him and start again.

I'm going to back up everything onto my external HDD. I will scan the contents with malwarebytes and AVG. Will this be good enough to make sure i'm not reinfecting his machine with his personal files?

The next step is to reformat the drive and delete everything. This should get rid of any virus i hope. Unless there is something in the master boot record right? Is there a way I can check this?

Finally my last question is which OS to put on the system?

Vista is pretty terrible i think and would be the last resort
XP is great and i have a Boot CD for my laptop that i can use. Would this be possible?
windows 7 could work but as a pretty poor student i cant afford the ?70 price tag. But i might be able to get hold of a copy form someone although again i'm not sure if this will work. Dont really want to use an illegal OS as im sure the downsides are pretty big like no windows updates.
So to summarise:
1)will AVG and malwarebytes make sure his personal files arent infected?
2)how can i check the MBR is virus free?
3)which windows would be best to reinstall?

Thanks for all your help,

James

A:Windows vista upgrade to 7 or downgrade to XP?

If you format, you don't have to worry about MBR.Vista is pretty terribleOn infected computer, any OS will be terrible.Dont really want to use an illegal OSNo, you don't.There is no reason for going back to XP, 2 years old operating system. If you can't afford buying Windows 7, formatting and reinstalling Vista will do just fine.will AVG and malwarebytes make sure his personal files arent infected? No security program will do, if the user doesn't play responsibly.

Dell just saying it's a "possibility" the motherboard might need to be replace. No one can tell you that motherboard is definite "Fried" without first looking at the system.
What is the system model number and version of windows before upgrading to windows 10? Example: Dell Inspiron 3543, windows 10
You're able to boot into BIOS(F2 key) and diagnostic (F12 key) ?

Hi guys,

My DVD drive is broken beyond repair, and I've forgotten my USB at home.

I have the installation saved on my desktop, but it won't let me downgrade unless its a reboot. Does anyone have a good multiboot program that will let me install XP on my computer?

A:Windows Upgrade/Downgrade with a broken CD slot

Can I ask why you're posting in a Vista forum even though the problem is germain to any operating system?

You can multiboot in Vista and Win 7 as long as you install XP on a separate partition. Have you considered installing XP in Virtual XP which is available for Win 7 ultimate. Then you wouldn't need your drive.

So, if I do the free upgrade from W7 to W10 and then go back to W7, will I keep the free upgrade on this PC if I install W10 after the summer 2016 deadline? Or going back to W7 will disable the free upgrade to W10?

Thank you.

Technically, your license has been converted to Windows 10 license and thus you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free past the deadline.

Hello everyone! Sadly my first post here is written under pretty bad circumstances. I am one of the many people whose systems (in my case a Precision 15 5510) were "automatically" upgraded to Windows 10 without warning, as Microsoft changed the status of Windows 10 from an 'optional update' to that of a 'reccommended update'. After the installation completed, I was presented with the EULA and selected the 'decline' option and Windows notified me that if I continue with this option it will 'attempt to re-install Windows 7' so I did that. After supposedly re-installing Windows 7, my system restarted and booted with the Windows 7 logo but before the login screen appeared I got a blue screen and the laptop restarted. This subsequently happened every time I attempted to start my laptop, except for when I tried to boot in safe mode (which it did successfully). I restarted the laptop, pressed F8 and selected the Repair option and the Dell Backup and Recovery option after that. I selected the drive I want to backup (C:) from the menu and was notified to insert a Flash Drive or a SD card that has more than 43GB free. I inserted a 64 GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (SanDisk Extreme, which is meant to be really fast) and clicked 'Next'. Dell Backup and Recovery has since been stuck on the next screen which says "Backing up your data and Dell Backup and Recovery settings" with the progress bar just flashing by rather than actually showin... Forgive me if this is the wrong section to ask this, or if this has already been asked, because after searching for quite a while, I couldn't find any satisfactory answer.

I am using HP 15-ab031tx notebook, and it came with windows 8.1 single language. I upgraded to windows 10 single language on 11th Feb, and though it's awesome, for now I would like to roll back to win 8.1. But I would like to upgrade again later.
Can I do that?
If yes, can I do that after July 29?

Also, will it help if I use the media creation tool to create a windows 10 DVD and later use it for installation? Will the windows in the created DVD be activated automatically upon installation?
Will Microsoft 'remember' that I had once upgraded during the free upgrade period, so that makes me eligible for an upgrade again?

Hello everyone, I've been stuck on trying to upgrade to Windows 10. I am currently using a OEM Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, HP Pavilion dv6 laptop.

Problem started when I notified Microsoft that I wanted to upgrade to Windows 10. I upgraded with my wife's laptop first. She also has the same laptop, but its a newer version. Windows 10 installed fine, so I decided to do mine. So I repeated the steps I did when I upgraded my wife's laptop. I clicked on the Windows icon in my task bar. It told me Windows upgrade was ready, so I clicked on continue. I let the update take its course. After 8 hours of seeing the words "working on it" I decided to exit out of the program, thinking something is wrong. I restarted my laptop and clicked on the Windows icon again. This time I did this before I went to bed. When I woke up it still had the words "working on it." So I did some research and I came across a thread that stated to use Windows update. I ran the Windows update and to my surprise Windows 10 was there (it was the only update). I clicked on update and it started to download, so I figured life was good. Windows 10 downloaded and installed. It went through the three phases (Baking up files, installing software and drivers, and then validation)<--if those are not the exact three phases I forgot, but there are three phases-->as soon as the third phase finished it states that something goes wrong and reverts back to Windows 7 Home Premium. MICROSOFT HAS CONFIRMED that being a Windows 10 Insider does not guarantee a free copy of the operating system.

The company is using the Windows Insider programme as its biggest ever beta test for what is being billed as the final or definitive version of Windows, or Windows-as-a-service.

But Microsoft has made it clear that its generosity stretches only so far, and that being a beta tester is an honour in itself.

Windows 10 will be offered as a free upgrade to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users when it launches later this year.

Windows 8 has reached end of life, and customers will need to take the free upgrade to Windows 8.1 first, which is still subject to holdouts totalling 5.88 percent of the OS market, according to this month's Netmarketshare figures.

From what I know (and what they wrote), only owners of Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to get the free upgrade. Owners of Windows 8 and Windows Phones 8 will have to upgrade to 8.1 to have access to that free upgrade (anyway, they can upgrade to 8.1 for free from 8).

I would like to upgrade one of my computers to Windows 10 - it will be either my 17' HP laptop which is currently running Windows 8.1 or my HP 15" laptop currently running Windows 7.

I have received popups from Microsoft that both of these machines are fully compatible with Windows 10. I do not run a printer or any external devices from these machines and never use the DVD/CD drives either so I shouldn't have driver issues for those things.

My question is: if I do upgrade one of them and decide I don't want to keep it, is it possible to return to the previous operating system and would that be a gigantic headache to do so? BTW, I have the product keys for both machines.

A:Free Windows 10 upgrade?

you should be able to create recovery media from the existing PCs - so you can go back
I would do that first -
Windows 7 - will create DVDs - upto 6 or USB drive
Windows 8/8.1 - 16gb or 32GB usb drive will be needed on some HP PCs i have needed 18GB
Also HP reported issues using sandisk make

An upgrade will allow you to go back to the previous version within 30days - But some people have had issues going back

The media creation tool is a good way to do the upgrade, but make sure you upgrade and not a clean install

Although this new release is supposed to allow you to enter a old key from W7/8/8.1 and install, BUT its only been released a few days

Data - make sure you also have a FULL data backup

In addition to the small annoying cost, there could be a problem during the upgrade.

A:windows 10 free upgrade

Normally it automatically offers the free upgrade again if you had previously done it. You may have drivers/software that need to be updated first-either using HP Support Assistant or manually from your support page.http://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=re_r11839_us/en/supporth...

Hi According to Microsoft the Free upgrade program is good for 1 year so it should be free, being tht said microsoft has not come up with a plan to stop free upgrades or charge for it as of now, so with the information we have now yes it should be free but it can change,

Hello Blondee,

Unfortunately Oct. 4, 2010 is after June 2009 to Jan 2010, and is why you did not qualify or is not available anymore.

I read that the free upgrade to Windows 10 from my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits is going to finish the end of July. Is there any option to get this update without needing to download it through Internet? My internet is extremely slooooooowwwww.....
It would be nice to get it on a dvd and only needing to install it when I have time for it.
Does Windows 10 also have that option to create System Image on an external HD, like Windows 7?
I am thinking to save a System Image of my Windows 7 installation, install Windows 10 free upgrade, save an image of it and put Windows 7 back - I not have time right now to see what will work with Windows 10 and I have some software installed that I need to finish a job that is on XP mode. Will take a few month until I can try Windows 10.

A:Free upgrade to windows 10

So, I had to reinstall windows 7. How do I re-upgrade to windows 10. I've read that it is possible. I tried to upgrade via windows but need key to continue. I've read you dont need to key for upgrade since i'm already in record. Tried upgrade via bootup, the dvd i have require fresh install or upgrade via windows. I'm just confused with info i'd found.

Has anyone tried?

I am sorry if this issue had been beat to death, I am somewhat thick headed, there have been numerous posts on this issue, and it has gotten very confusing , but I wanted to get an ISO of the Free windows 8.1 Pro upgrade, I think I should have downloaded the iso when I first upgraded, however I would still like to have the 8.1 iso on hand. I have a windows 8 Pro, OEM Key. Thanks

A:Free Windows 8.1 iso upgrade

Welcome to EightForums

If you have the Windows 8 upgrade, you have a Retail key, not a OEM key.

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create

This will only work with a Retail key.

My dad wants to upgrade to windows 10 at the end of the free trial, but I don't.
1. Compatability - All of my favourite programes and games are older, often older than MS Vista. I am aware that "upgrading" keeps compatability back to windows 95, but I'll be getting a new computer in July.
2. Looks, I think windows 10 looks ugly and stupid.
3. Performance, my computer is not exactly th titan supercomputer. (GPU sucks especially)
4. Windows 10 spies. (He says 7 does, but I think it's minimal if at all)

He says Windows 10 has built in antivirus stuff, but I'm not sure. Even if it does, I think Windows 7 might. (I don't think it does though) and bitdefender has been inactive for months. (Disabled)

So, can some-one:
A. Persuade me Windows 10 is great
B. Give me good enough reasaons to dissuade my dad from Windows 10.

We are both PC literate, the main thing that stops me is admin priveliges.

A:Windows 10 free upgrade - Yay or OH NO!

Hi,
Well windows defender in win-10 is not a very good stance for or reason to upgrade
Win-7 you can have about the same in MSE = Microsoft Security Essentials

I have no good reason to upgrade
Win-7 serves my needs

Although I do have 1-10 pro install I rarely use it.

If you type in the start menu search this
Change Customer Experience Improvement Program settings
You can see if you participate in telemetry usage sending

All M$ products have separate settings for usage sending = Office/ photo gallery/....
