I'm looking for a desktop

Q: I'm looking for a desktop

Heya. I'm looking for a gaming desktop for equal, under or just a wee bit over a 1000$ that can handle some Skyrim masochism.

I'm looking for some well known brands such as alien, (it doesn't have to be alien though)

Preferred Solution: I'm looking for a desktop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My suggestion for getting a great desktop in the USA is to contact Carey Holzman, who will build you exactly what you need. https://www.facebook.com/CareyHolzman

(Having seen inside an Alienware desktop I really don't rate it much: 'Mainly cheap proprietary junk if you ask me.)

Carey is a professional computer technician and former Intel employee with many years experience and his own business.

I have been having CPU issues at 100%. I contacted HP.com support and the last suggestion they suggested was to update the video card driver. I have a Nividia GSForce2 MX200 (Compaq Computer) They sent me to a link to their ftp site and I followed the instructions to download, install, and do a restart. When I restarted there were no desktop icons. It probably means that whatever files are damaged are preventing the startup from finishing. The normal internet programs that launch upon starting up the computer are not launched and I have to manually launch them by finding them. I tried doing a last known good configuiration, and when that failed in safe mode I couldn't access the Start Menu to do a system restore. I tried rolling back the driver to the previous one to no avail. I called HP and of course they wanted to charge me since it is out of warranty. I said it was their file and I asked for a supervisor who told the tech to tell me the same thing. So I was stuck with chat support. We were able to try the system restore which didn't work. I went to Control Panel and tried cliking on Taskbar or Start Menu but nothing happens. HP sent me 2 links for some patches:
HP said in an email "Based on the information that I gathered from the chat session,

Since I upgraded to Windows 8, I am no longer able to save individual Remote Desktop Connection files as .rdp files. I am talking about the traditional Remote Desktop Connection application on the Desktop that was in previous Windows versions, not the
Remote Desktop App from the Windows 8 store.
When I try to click on the Save button I get "An error occurred while saving to file"
When I try to click on the Save As button I get "Unable to open connection file" with the file address being where I tried to save it with the file name at the end.
Also when I upgraded to Windows 8, my .rdp files disappeared from my Documents folder.
I need to create different .rdp files for different programs that my employees get into on my server. Now I have to hand type all the info each time into the Programs tap on the Remote Desktop Connection window, because I can't save to an
.rdp file.
I like the Remote Desktop App from the Windows store but it won't let me designate specific programs to use using standard dos notation (ie c:\program files\ etc..). It just goes to my server desktop.
I want to promote Windows 8 to my employees but I need either .rdp files for the traditional Remote Desktop Connection or the ability to open specific programs using dos notation in the Windows Store Remote Desktop App.

titled "Need HELP for Windows XP failure to run Explorer.exe after Welcome Page".

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del. If it brings up Task Manager, create a new task and run %windir%\explorer.exe. If this brings up the desktop, then according to the posted HijackThis log, this is my speculation (assuming your system is clean of malware):

Too many startup processes. Any undue change to any of them can cause problem during startup. If you could remember the very last time you had accessed the internet before this problem cropped up, did your hard disk light blinked a lot? Some programs were actively reading or writing to your machine. It could be Windows update or ZoneAlarm or others. Undo Windows update, uninstall ZoneAlarm, unintall IME, uninstall Java, etc. Try to minimize or simplify you startup process. Get replacement, another version of Java or from the other vendor, another firewall, another IME, etc.

Sorry for the delay. When I solved my similar problem, the thread is closed. So I post here in case anyone care to read. I uninstall ZoneAlarm, zap clean the registry with Registry Easy 4.7, replace it with Comodo Internet Security Free 3.5.54375.427. My XP sp2 is back to normal and desktop shows up after logon as normal.

problem with desktop display properties

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two nights ago I visited the web site Flash Fun Pages to find a joke to send to a friend who is sick with cancer. I did not end up sending anything and logged out. Yesterday, the background on my desktop was hijacked by this site. I ran Ad Aware SE and AVG both regularly and in safe mode, but did not find any viruses or malware. I also ran Trend Micro House Call but that did not find any problems either.

The problem was that the backgrounds were frozen at the end of the list, on "desktop", and could not be changed. I went on line to Downloads.com and looked under desktop display hijacked and found some freeware named Desktop Hijack Fix. This got rid of the Flash Fun Pages joke links and ads, but now my desktop display backgrounds are still frozen, although they are now frozen at the top of the list--'none'. I can choose a color, but I cannot access any of the background options, including the photo of my dog, which is my background of choice.

Interestingly, there are two users of my computer, and the other user does not have this problem. I can change the display properties backgr... Read more

A:[SOLVED] opaque titles for desktop icons can't be made transparent/desktop always act

I have gone through the 5 steps.

Attached please find the Hijack This log, and the 2 DSS logs.

I cannot post the Panda ActiveScan log from my first scan because I simply forgot to upload it and when I go back to the site all it says is that 11 tracking cookies were disinfected. But I am attaching the log from my second scan. Interestingly, there were 4 additional low level tracking cookies found and disinfected. The same 8 vulnerabilities--all from Microsoft updates--remain on my computer since the software does not disnfect these or offer the opportunity to disinfect them.

Spyware Blaster has been set up to protect everything on my computer.

But the problem is still that apparently my desktop is active and cannoot be turned off. I have run Iconoid and cannot make the titles for my desktop icons transparent because it states that the desktop is active. You can see in my previous posting the work that Cool Freak has done to try to figure this out before he kicked this over to "the experts".

Please help me. It's not only that my desktop is ugly with these opaque icon title boxes, there is something wrong with my computer that is causing this that we have not identified as yet, and who knows what havoc that might wreak in the future! Thank you very much for your attention and help.

While working offline, my Dell Latitude 131L goes into hibernate. When I restart the laptop it opens to a generic "Dell" desktop picture. There is no Start Menu or toolbar. No desktop icons are available. The cursor is in the middle of the screen, but is of no use. I was NOT installing any software or hardware.

I attempted to reboot, same screen appears.

I am able to start in "Safe Mode."

I attempted to use a Restore point, but each time (I tried several dates) it will not take.

I called Dell and we ran a Hardware test (Fn and Power keys), no errors were present.

Update: It loads REAL slow, taking about 15 minutes or more. But then I can not anything. After an hour of loading, I ran Kaspersky and no threats were found.

Restarted and got a blue screen that says
Checking the file System C:
The type of file system is NTSF.
The volume is dirty

Then it does a series of verifications that take a long time.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:XP loads to a generic desktop, no start menu order desktop icons

The following steps will be a good start to resolving the issue. The first thing that you should do is to check that your hard drive is not failing. On a working computer, download the diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's website to create a bootable floppy or CD.Find the brand name of your hard drive. You will find this info on the label of the hard drive (most likely you will have to remove the hard drive from the box to read the label). You will also find sufficient info to identify the drive (the model number) by looking at the hdd code in the BIOS Setup Menu, and then googling the code. Another alternative is to use something like Everest or Belarc Advisor.

Hi
The problem I'm having is at start-up. Windows loads properly, but when it's finished I have no Icons, no task bar, and can't right click on any part of the desktop. All I Have is the wallpaper displaying, that's it.
I noticed on task manager when I hit CRT-ALT-Delete, that Explorer.exe is not on the list of processes. when I type in explorer.exe in the new task, I get a error that says cannot find explorer exe. make sure path was straight etc etc. I was wondering if you might know what the problem is and allow me to take the steps in remedy this problem. I think the explorer has something to do with the desktop not loading properly.

Wasn't sure if this is the right category but I guess it's ultimately a question of hardware...

In case you don't want to read the whole background, my ultimate question is, Which power supply should I look to get to replace the dead one in the old unit?

I just moved into an off-campus house at college and the last homeowners left behind a lot of stuff, including what appears to be a functional Dell desktop PC. At least 10 years old, judging by the available ports on the MB and the other hardware inside. The unit is dead on its own, but I tried connecting the 20-pin part of my desktop's power supply to the old unit and the motherboard seemed to power up (light went on, CPU fan started).

The hard drive and CD-ROM drive didn't seem to power on, but I found what seemed to be a safety button (see first image) which I am guessing prevents those devices from powering on if the case is open. Can anyone confirm this for me? I want to know if anything else in this unit is dead, but it seems like everything was in great shape (not much dust, etc). I don't really want to pump more than like $50 bucks into this thing, as my goal was to use this PC as either a dedicated Linux machine or to host a web site (not expecting much traffic at all, and with FiOS Quantum 75/75 we have more than enough bandwidth).

The motherboard looks very much like the Dell OptiPlex GX260 SDT SFF Socket 478 (Image: http://attach.forum.ge/post-54-1270667615.jpg) although I cannot seem to find the exa... Read more

Recently my desktop icon placement has not been able to stay put if I do a desktop refresh or a computer reboot. I have looked at many internet hits on this same topic and no solution suggested has worked. I've tried them all til I'm blue in the face!

I have done the IconCache.db thing where you can delete an existing file from the hidden ...\Appdata\Local\ directory and restart the explorer. There was no file there. Yes, I have show hidden files turned on. Restarting explorer doesn't help. Rebooting is supposed to re-create the file, but it doesn't. Resetting the colors from 32 to 16 and back is supposed to rebuild the cache. It doesn't. Still no file there. After manually placing a few icons and refreshing the desktop, it is supposed to remember where they are, but it doesn't, they just fly back to where they were before manually moving them.

This is getting to be very aggravating and frustrating. I don't know why this has started all of a sudden, and I cannot seem to find a solution from the many internet hits on the same topic.

Someone out there, please help with fixing this problem. I know I'm not the only one with it. Thanks!

I am using Win 7 Home \premium.

When I had my Vista Home Premium, I had over 200 desktop icons/shortcuts.
Dam things would relocate whenever they wanted. Imagine the frustration and anger trying to find the shortcut I wanted ?
I finally came across this tutorial :
Save and Restore Desktop Icon Layout in Windows Vista - How-To Geek
I used it and it worked. If one or 2 icons ever moved, one right click will put them back where they were supposed to be.

Yesterday, while on my Windows 7, I decided to install that program as well and see if it also works in Win 7.
It does.

Give it a try and please report back.

Note : at the end there is a notice about 32-bit and 64-bit.

My problem is it creates a ghost like file that really isn't there because if I delete one, the other becomes inaccessible and I have to manually refresh using F5. Also, when I restart my computer it also is creating duplicates of files and shortcuts. Even when I install software it creates two short cuts.. I can deal with having to manually refresh, but I cannot deal with it creating duplicates of everything.

So I rebooted my computer after a crash, and after logging in the screens were completely black and my mouse & keyboard was unresponsive. I did Crtl + Alt + Del which brought up the correct menu, and after I exited it I was put onto the start menu, which was blank. Just like the login screen and lock screen, the colour and design had been reset (to purple, if it matters). So a while back when i was running XP on this rig, i had a active desktop wallpaper setup that would display animated local radar images. Basically the same radar you would see if you put in your zipcode in the weather.com or accuweather.com radar section.

So now with Win 7, i cant get it to work for the life of me....and no, sorry, the wimpy sidebar gadgets just dont cut it.

Basically what it was, and am looking to accomplish, is have a live animated radar as my wallpaper / background.
Preferably not the whole screen, just alike a 12X8 square or something relative.

Picture attached of a mock setup of what im talking about.

Im pretty sure i originally was using this as my source for the animated wallpaper:
http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/Loop/NatLoop.gif
My favorite radar site

Any ideas all?

Thanks for reading

I recently setup a new Windows 7 machine (brand new Skylake build) and swapped the displays from my old machine to the new machine, and started working on the old machine via RDP as I migrate things slowly.
What I found by trial and error is that usually within 20 minutes of using Remote Desktop from the new machine, I would get the Aero Performance warning. I see dwm.exe consuming 100% CPU of a single core. This boggled me because I have a fast machine, with
an ASUS GTX 580 Matrix GPU (nVidia) that performs very well. I am using the latest Geforce drivers.
Once it happens, dragging Windows is a very hitchy experience. Nothing works to recover. If I start the Desktop Window Manager service, it'll go immediately to a high CPU state. I have to reboot to clear it up. If I dont use RDP, it never happens, but within
minutes of opening the RDP session, there it goes again. I can stop the Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service to workaround the problem.
One more symptom. Once, before rebooting, I decided to uninstall the nVidia drivers and try reinstalling them. The installer complained that no compatible display adapter was found. I had to reboot in order to reinstall them. This almost sounds like a flaky
driver or GPU, but this GPU worked fine for the past couple of years in another box (though that doesn't mean it didn't go bad since).

Hello Everybody,

I stupidly saved important folders to desktop; When I click properties says location is c\users\user\desktop which to me is where the folder and files are on the HD.

I have tried using a practise folder to get it from desktop to My Docs with properties showing as a Document, so I can delete from the desktop.
When I create folder on desktop and "send to" My Docs it appears in my doc but when I delete from desktop it deletes both.
I looked at a article about the old way drag and drop as XP did. Found the move to under edit but still can't do it.
there must be a way!
I do not use libraries as they confuse me as to where the file is stored on HD and I only have important docs twice a year, which is also the problem, as I don't repeat what I've learnt enough.

I've been storing some on my old XP drive [Has all my old records on] as I can work that, but I thought I could use the Win 7. Well I'm pathetic , I can't even move a document and know its safe on HD.

I do not use the libraries as sounds simple but I never believe I won't accidently delete.>

Any help will be appreciated.
Regards Shalimar

Hello,

I saved a scanned copy of a letter on my desktop, but the next day the desktop had been cleaned up and I can't find the file anywhere on my PC. I've tried several alternative searche - but to no avail.

My desktop cleanup wizard was on, but I had turned it off many days ago.

Please help!! I need to find the file as it is a letter to my local tax office (and I did not keep a printout, grrrr!)

Rgds,

Newboyo

A:PDF file lost from desktop but desktop cleanup wizard off

I would try a search. Make sure to search for .pdf on C: drive. Also, under More Advanced Options check:
Search System Folders
Search hidden files and folders
Search Subfolders

If this doesn't find it. Its not there.

I recently had to deal with a pretty nasty Malware/Virus. i dont know which one, I didn't bother to read the logs of the virus detectors as I was removing it, I just kept working on getting it gone.I think it's gone now, but i'm left with one annoying side effect. I'm including a screenshot of my desktop. It's a folder. It's actually on TOP of my desktop, and it's a real folder. I can click on the 2 icons there, and they will open. If i try to move any icons around my desktop, it thinks i'm trying to put them INTO that folder. Now, if i go into hijack this, i find this line, I assume the issues are related.024 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection (no file)I cannot remove this with hijackthis. I select it, click Fix, then click scan.... and it's still there. I've got Adaware, Hijackthis (latest), Malwarebites, and none of them seem to care about the issue, or my lack of a desktop.EDIT: add spybot s&d to the list of programs i've tried. It found a couple registry entries for smitfraud, but it didnt' get me my desktop back.

A:Folder IS Desktop, and 024 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection

OMG i got it on my own. You have no idea how happy i am. I'm going to post this solution for search and archival purposes.

One of the above programs, not sure which one, finally unlocked the window. Scrolling my mouse to the top of the screen allowed me to pull down the window, and close the little bugger.

WOOHOO!

But i still have the 024 thing in my hijackthis, and it still wont remove. I'd appreciate help on this one just for peace of mind.

Hello All. I seem to be infected with some rather malicous malware. It redirects most search engine results upon click to advertisments. I have followed a trusted friends advice and booted into safe mode, ran Rkill, then scanned with Malwarebytes and someinfections were found and removed. However, when i boot back into normal mode AVG still prompts to remove the following infected files:

c:\windows\assembly\GAC_32\Desktop.ini
c:\windows\assembly\GAC_64\Desktop.ini

Threat name: Trojan horse backdoor.generic15.AXLA

However, the "move to vault" option fails with AVG in normal mode.

Referring to the tutorial 'Pin to taskbar' Folder and Drive in Windows 10 I created a 'desktop icon' but it only shows 10 out of 26 'items' (some shortcuts, some folders, etc).

Hi,
Ive been running a windows 2000 for a while now, the other day i saw it was running,
but i hadn't turned it on, and the monitor was blank.
Tried the mouse and the keyboard, but got no response, so i turned it off using the
button on the front of the computer.
To my surprise after a few minutes, it turned itself back on. I watched the monitor
as it went through the motions. Memory check. Win 2000 logo. Black and white stripe.
All seemed well, until it was about to show the desktop display, it didn't show up.
Just blank, but the computer carried on clicking and twinkling its little light. Then
the Windows start up musical sound played. Then nothing, but the PC stayed on, and
its little light would blink every so often.
I waited a while, then decided this wasn't right.
Switched it off again, and started it again. same result.

Tried again, this time i went for "Safe Mode".

It started up in "Safe Mode" , but of course it can't be used fully in "Safe Mode".
I looked around it, poked at this, poked at that, all looked normal for "Safe Mode".
Shut it down, properly this time, by using the proper shut down sequence.
It shut down ok, i thought - maybe thats all it needs, a proper shut down - maybe it
will behave itself now, and fly right.

No.
It started itself up after about four minutes, same as before.
PC running, no display.

So, i am asking for help please.

After running Ad-aware, a trojan file was detected that couldn't be quarantined, cleaned or deleted. Husband found a way to get it deleted, but there was a warning saying that it was associated with another file. Deleted anyway.

Ran McAfee VirusScan and deleted unwanted programs it detected. After that, the mouse wouldn't work, so shut computer down by holding button in until shutdown (only way it could be shut down).

Start up went normal until the desktop background came up. Message stating "C: couldn't be found, check address again(???)" popped up. I clicked OK then it just sat there. I shut it off again.

Start up went normal again up through desktop background. No message this time. Mouse seems to work, but no icons or start up blue bar.

The only thing we can think of is the deleted file was associated with our desktop icons.

Thank you for your help.

One of the tasks it allows you to do is switch between several browsers to see how a web page may render differently. When I clicked on a form select element while in IE 7.0, it crashed. This is a repeatable bug that I have encountered before(don't click forms select again ya dummy). Anyways, all the applications that were running died and the computer froze requiring a hard reboot. When the computer returned, the desktop wallpaper image was zoomed. Obviously something became corrupted with the crash. I can't find a solution how to unzoom the wallpaper image. I tried a number of display and accessibility options without any luck(screen resolution, DPI, large icons, centered, stretched, etc.). I did notice if I changed from my usual "hide desktop icons", to "show desktop icons", the wallpaper image is then displayed correctly. I can also kill the explorer.exe process and the wallpaper will show correctly. If I run File>New Task(Run...)>explorer.exe again, it reverts back to the zoomed wallpaper. I tried a restore point from the day before. Wiped display drivers and installed the latest. Switched the dvi cable to a different output on the card. It took a little while for my desktop to load (about 15 minutes) but it worked fine once it was loaded.

Well after a couple of days it started taking longer and longer for my desktop to load. Now its up to about 45 minutes for any icons to appear. You can set the height, width and position of the shape on the screen. It also have a function that saves and restores icons position, useful for those who change resolution a lot.

I attached some screenshots to see what I'm talking about.

Installing any program, opening the system task monitor, letting the computer idle into sleep, or any process that makes the screen "flash" sets the screens back to clone. It's even more annoying that for some reason, I cannot get the system to recognize the external monitor through the display settings. To get around this, I've set up schemes that I default to through the Intel Graphics card. I know it's a minor irritation, but somehow I managed to bypass that default in Vista Ultimate and can't quite figure out how to do it in 7.

I attempted to fill out my system specs in my profile as best as possible, but please let me know if any information more is needed from me. I apologize if anything is missing, this is my first post. Thanks for your help!

Hi! I'll describe my problem with an example. Let's say I'm moving a file to the desktop (the folder in Windows Explorer). When I then check the desktop, the file isn't there. My problem is that changes that are either made to the desktop or the desktop folder doesn't apply to the other one, so the desktop folder and the desktop itself looks different. How can I fix this?

Sorry for the confusing explanation :/

A:Changes made in the desktop folder doesn't change on the desktop.

So what is the issue?
