HP deskjest 100 portable printer will not recognize a new tri color cartridge (98). Just says : "cartridge not installed" When I put back the old one that is out of ink, it works fine. I have tried several new ones and all say same message.I have physically looked for any possible mechanical issue but found none. The printer is about 3 years old but has printed maybe 200 pages. I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Some software publishers or authors offer both portable and installable versions of their products. (Kee Pass is one of them.)

Is it advisable to systematically prefer the portable version, when running it from a fixed drive and not a thumb drive, according to the logic that if it's possible not to write into the registry, it's better not to ?

I often try new software, and I'm concerned about long-term stability. I install and uninstall a lot, using Revo Uninstaller Pro. But I've come accross people advising not to use Revo or other fancy uninstallers, just to stick to the product's own uninstaller or the Windows function.

Also, I have set C-Cleaner to a daily auto-run. In the past, I used its registry cleaner quite regularly. But some people say it's better not to clean the registry at all.

So I figured the more applications could stay away from the registry, the better. Is this a correct assumption ? Are there any drawbacks to portable apps ?

A:Are portable apps preferable, even for non-portable use ?

I have been using a lot of cleaning softwares too . Registry as well as junk cleaners.
Registry cleaner to me is a good thing as it removes the useless leftovers of programs that are left by their regular un-installer or some deleted files.

ANS1 > I recommended to clean registry as it improves performance and reduce junk in resgitry . So if portables apps dnt have or create these junks in registry then ur assumption is right and i m at your side too because " u dont need to re-install every software when u replace OS as it will work as it is if its PORTABLE "

ANS2 > Portable softwares are better then installed ones .

Above are the answer given as a user , i have used many portable softwares never had any issue just benefits

Hi All.

I was about to buy WD passport 500G when I noticed that they released a new edition and accordingly to the majority of the reviews on Amazon.co.uk Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB USB 2.0
it is a disaster. They built s/w into HD's ROM, so you cannot get rid of it by formatting HD (it is loading a virtual cd-rom every time you plug the HD in. Just like Scan u3 usb stick, although I think you can get red of this one (didn't try it b/c I like it)). Also it has nonstandard small USB connector/cable.

So, I will have to buy either previous edition while stock lasts or I found another HD that looks OK but I don't know anything about it.
Samsung S2 2.5-inch 500GB USB 2.0
Do you know anything about this Samsung HD? I found more or less good review on Tom's h/w but I would like to hear from "real" people

A:Portable USB HD

You aren't necessarily limited to the major brands. You could build your own by buying an external enclosure and then fitting it with the drive of your choice. I no longer buy WD/Maxtor, Seagate, ect externals. I just find an enclosure with good reviews and a decent price, then match it up with the drive I want.

Very often, and getting more frequent now, when i plugged in my HDD into my laptop, it hangs and produces a beepng sound. Sometimes it goes away after a while and then it opens, sometimes it just hangs and I have to stop it.
Does problem lie in the HDD or my laptop OS? My OS is Vista Business 32bit.
Any advice anyone? Thanks!

Try plugging it into another pc with same operating system. If it works fine it's not the hard drive however if it hangs it could be either one and you'll be back where you started from. GOOD LUCK

Hi everyone,
I'm going on holiday soon, I have a very nice Fuji digital camera, I have an 256Mb Xd picture card with it, lots of pics you may say, actually it takes around 100 at 6 million pixels, less at 12 million, not bad however, last time I was on holiday the picture card was soon full, I couldn't take anymore photo's last 3 days.

My question, is there a portable disk that will connect to my camera via the USB cable which will allow me to download all the pics from the Xd card thus enabling me to empty the card to start taking more pics?

Has anybody make a successful Win XP Portable with a thumb drive?

I have read many websites and "How To's" but to no avail... it is one of those things that I tell myself I must learn to do as it would make my life easier for those times when the computer has a virus or help a friend with a problem, etc, etc.

I was able to get one going with bartPE but it takes a long time to load the iso file.

If any of you have, can you point me in the right direction?

A:USB Win XP Portable

Assuming you'd even getting it working, it wouldn't be usable. The USB interface doesn't work well booting a Windows OS. The performance would be bad, and some sites claim it drasticllay shortens the life of the drive.

I'm not sure how this would help (if it were possible) for either situation. If a computer has a virus, either fight it directly or pull the drive and connect it to a working computer and clean it.

I have an external hard drive for all my gigabytes of music, and I have Media Monkey installed as a portable app. This setup is great for taking my music library wherever I go, but the shortcut disappears from the taskbar any time the hard drive is powered off, or if the shortcut does stick around after booting up, the icon is blank. Is there a way to get the shortcut to persist properly? Would there be a way to edit the autoplay.ini to pin the shortcut when the drive is detected?

A:How do I pin a portable app to the taskbar?

You could create a shortcut to the application, put it anywhere on a drive that doesn't go offline and pin that to the taskbar. I tested it with a random exe then moved the executable and the shortcut and icon did persist. I did have to drag it to the taskbar as the context menu only had the pin to start option for some reason.
But I'm not sure about detecting it. I could look into writing something if there is an option to programmatically pin to taskbar. Even then it would be the last icon at the time it was pinned

We have an application where we have a small computer running Windows XP SP3 in stations at various customer locations. The computer does not have monitor, keyboard or mouse.

When ever we need to do maintenance I need to carry a monitor and keyboard, since the corporate customer does not give us access to their network, so no remote desktop possibility with a laptop. Anything small and portable would be nice.

I am considering an USB monitor. Small compact and simple with a flexible USB keyboard & mouse, but....

Since I have many units (over 100) already in the field, none of them have the needed drivers.

What happen when connecting a USB monitor like the Lenovo LT1421 or the Toshiba PA3923U-2LC3 to a computer without the proper drivers?

I would imagine nothing good for me.

So I am stuck with the proverbial chicken and the egg, which came first? How can I install a driver without a monitor and how the monitor could work without the driver?

Is there a way to create a script on a USB flash drive with the loging information, UID & PWD, that would start the driver installation automatically when inserting the flash drive on a computer that is running applications and services but not logged on?

Any one has a better, simpler solution that is compact and portable?

I have seen USB to VGA adpator but never a VGA to USB adaptor.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the instructions.

A:Portable DVD player

Well have you tried actually tried playing more than one movie? If yes and it is still the same, you are probably stuck BUT if it was expensive, then you can often get a screen replacement (take it it's LCD) from the manufaturer or maybe even ebay?! Screens on these little things are usually simple to replace. If you cannot afford it or don't want to bother, there is no point in trashing it. Advertise it on ebay as broken saying it 'may need a screen replacement' however you are unsure.

How to make Powershell portable with addins and extensions also without installing the .net Framework...

The features of this technique:

* Fully Portable

* versions that presume dotnet 2.0s preexistence (about 3MB to 10MB)

* Versions that don?t need dotnet 2.0 at all (about 100MB)

* Can run V1 and V2 side by side.

* Can run on a machine with PowerShell already installed, and your portable version has its own execution-policy and other settings.

* Can be packaged with SnapIns (so the SnapIns are portable also, no need to install or register them).

* Can be used with a custom Host , so you can have a Portable PowerShell Plus or PowerShell Analyzer.

download the portable and move it to a flashdrive
try that version.

Portable (i.e. less than 15 lbs)
Laser, or??? (Inkjets just dry up too quickly for our purposes)
Color print
Duplex printing (auto is preferred, but manual won't be the end of the world)
Inexpensive-ish (no more than $300)
My husband prints out color coded Excel spreadsheets when he meets with customers 3x/year. He needs a printer for taking with him when he goes to these meetings. It needs to be easy to carry with his laptop, reliable, and frugal with ink. It will sit in a hot truck part of the time, it's just the nature of the job. We've had several inkjets, but buying new cartridges because the old ones dry out after each use has gotten too expensive.

Knowing that, what's the best option for us? Thanks!

A:Best portable printer?

Well, good luck finding a "portable" laser printer. You'll never find one which would qualify as portable. First the size for now won't get to the point where you can throw one in a bag. Especially at the price point you're talking about. The other is the power draw required to run the fuser of a laser printer. The fuser has to draw a lot of power to "melt" in the toner particles onto the paper. The power draw is such that many laser printer manufacturers recommend against using a UPS with a laser printer.

The portable printer I have which is a solid design as Canon is still selling them even after I bought mine about 6 years ago is the Pixma iP100. This printer is light enough to throw into my carry on luggage on flights. It has an optional battery pack which I opted to purchase which allows you to truly run the printer as a portable unit. It has a single USB port on it. And has decent print quality both color and B/W. Decent but not great/fantastic. Certainly more than adequate for printing Excel spreadsheets. Also, I'm still running on the original ink cartridges that came with the printer but they're due for replacement. Granted I don't print a lot with this printer. I'd say that's pretty good for an inkjet printer. Oh and a duplex engine isn't an option for this printer. Again, I don't know of any portable printer with a duplex engine option which would negate the printer being portable due to how the... Read more

I have a question. When you use the portable version of the SuperAntivirusSpyware (SAS) on a memory stick to scan a computer where do the quarantined items go? Do they go on the computer you are scanning, or do they stay on the portable memory stick? I ran the portable scan tonight from a memory stick, and it found a few nasties. It wanted to know if I wanted to quarantine them, I said yes. It did not specify any folder where quarantine items would be located. I guess my quesion is, if I ever needed one of these file back, where would I find them, on the memory stick, or on the scanned computer? And what would be the name of the folder they be in? Thanks.

A:Portable version of SAS

The Portable version does not install itself into Program Files but it does create a new folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SUPERAntiSpyware.com. That is a typical location for logs and quarantine sub-folders. When launching the Portable version, the main menu has a Manage Quarantine... button but I cannot confirm where if it works the same as the regular version.According to this review, it does not.The functionality of the application is in all regards exactly the same with the exception of the quarantine. It is possible to perform a quick or full scan of one or all drives that are connected to the local computer system. Threats that have been detected can be removed but not quarantined. The program description is in this regard confusing as appears to support the quarantine when in fact it is not.Quarantined items are only stored in memory. No items are stored in the quarantine over sessions. Users need to keep that in mind since it makes it impossible to restore a false positive after the program has been closed.SuperAntiSpyware Free Portable, Scan Without InstallationI'm running a test scan now.

I'm looking for a portable media player and I don't know which one to choose. Either the 30 gb ipod video (300 dollars) or the Creative Zen Media Player (330 dollars).

I only know a few things about each one for instance with the ipod you can only use itunes to store the music and can only put Quicktime format movies on the ipod. Also, What music and videos you have on your ipod must also be on itunes for when you plug the ipod to you pc it automatically updates the music on the ipod to match itunes.

Now with the Creative Zen Media Player, its pretty much the opposite of the ipod video. It can store a lot more formats for the video and music, but not quicktime and can use other types of media player on your computer to store the music, but yet again not itunes. It also has an am/fm radio which you can record from directly to the hard drive and a microphone if you feel like going on a monologue. It's also bigger but not much and has a longer battery life for the videos.

Thats pretty much all I have so far. If any of its incorrect can you correct me and most importantly can you help me decide which one to get.

A:Which Is The Better Portable Mp3 Player?

I would go with the Creative because of ease of compatibility. You will have alot more formats supported and just be easier to use but if you have and use iTunes I would go with the iPod.
