I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi

Welcome to the bleeping computer forum

Unfortunately, intermittent issues are one of the difficult fault to troubleshoot. Please follow the below steps to collect some basic info about your system.

1 ) Generate a report about your system using Speccy by reading the guide below.

   http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/323892/publish-a-snapshot-using-speccy/

Post the web link displayed by Speccy in next reply.

2 ) Download and run Minitoolbox from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.

-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size

Now click "Go" and post the output in next reply

After reading your logs, either me or any other forum volunteer will assist to you to diagnose the issue.

Edit:

Don't ever use the registry cleaning function in CCleaner or Glary utilities. Only use them to clean the temp files. Using registry cleaners may cause unpredictable damage to the registry. If anyone properly knows which registry keys are garbage, that is only Microsoft.

I have a compaq laptop with windows[I'm assuming]. I have downloaded a file using torrents and I recently downloaded photofiltre.

For some reason my laptop is running very slow. I've run AVG and McAfee and it has said there are no viruses only tracking cookies.

Is there anyway to make my laptop faster? I'm not sure what's slowing it down but we really have no huge files on it.

Whenever I try and watch youtube videos or any videos it laggs and stops.

Hi,
My computer has been running slow, especially when I do a restart, it takes forever to restart. I went into msconfig and disabled what is in startup. Question is what do I need in startup and what can I get rid of? and how do I remove something from startup?
Also what is a good free firewall to use?
Thanks Dano

A:Computer runs faster when I disable what runs in the background?

Here is a good explanation: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
There are certain (and important) items that should run at Startup.

If you are unsure of some of the entries you see listed, this is a great website to research them: http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html
It tells you what the process is, and if it's necessary to run at Startup.

A good firewall (and free one) is Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

Hi,

I am posting due to my Dad's work computer running extremly slow. The mouse movement is very jumpy, programs take an extremly long time to load and run much slower than my own computer, and the start-up is extremly slow. My sister often uses the computer for myspace etc, and I'm sure that shes been to a few dodgy sites that have caused the computer to slow down.

I was considerring buying more RAM (its on 1gb DDR at the moment), however it is not running any intensive processes (Symantec antivirus corporate ed., itunes and printer software are the main things running) andI'd rather see if a simple software fix can be implmented.

Attached is a Hijackthis log. There is no urgent need for a response, as there are likely higher priority requests from other people. Any assistance with this is greatly appreciated.

Ok so, first of all im alex, this is my first post on this forum you guys have got

i have just yesturday bought an Acer 5536-644G32MN Laptop which is running vista.

i have a dialup internet connection (ha ha, please dont tell me to just get broadband)
which on my desktop computer running windows XP works fine,

Yesturday when i tried dialing up to my connection useing the inbuilt modem in my laptop, it connected but i noticed it was quite slow,
as in would take a few minutes to load google,
i went out for the day because i had other things to do,
when i came home later i tried the internet again, and it was working fine, just as well as it works on this desktop computer im on now.

now tonight when i tried connecting to the internet again it was realy really slow again, it would say its connected fine and running at 52kb but it wasnt loading pages
and 4 out of 5 times it would fail to sign into msn, and when it did sign in it woudl take a few minutes to show people online and then a minute later it would lose the connection to msn and sign out.
very frustrating
the inbuilt modem is a 56k ITU v.92 wake on ring ready (in the book it says that)

can anyone shed some light on the situation

i ahve tried disabling the mcaffee firewall on my laptop but that made no difference,

im not sure if this is a vista problem or something else

any tips?

A:Internet Running extremly slow (new computer)

Hi Alex, welcome to Tech Support Forums, First of all..... Get broadband :) Im just kidding, however that would solve your problem :P Have you contacted your ISP at all? They may need you to add some modem strings so your modem and isp can 'play nicely' that happens alot with software based modems, which are in most laptops.

I immediately noticed the rouge anti-virus program "Spyware guard 2008" on it.
No matter what I do, I can't remove it.
I've deletes the registry keys, and the files in program files, but they come back.
I tried running superantispyware, Malwarebytes, and Spybot: S&D, however None of them will even start up.
The only solution I see is... installing Linux maybe?

Also, I'm rather new here, how do I get a signature on my posts?

I ran hardware diagnostics and everything is fine (Memory, Hard Disk etc.)

I downloaded something off the internet and extracted the .exe file, my AVG-Anti Virus popped up and said that it detected a trojan, and asked me if i would like to remove it, i said yes and that was that. About 1 day later i restart my computer, and it freezes at the windows loading screen, it freezes over and over no matter how many times i try and start it. The only way i can get into the computer is to go into SafeMode. Once in safemode it goes so slow that i cannot do anything. If i click on the start menu in safemode - 5 minutes later the start menu will come up, it's ridiculous. I have tried Ctrl+Alt+Del to see if the CPU was bogged down, and it was at 0-1% usage, very strange. Anyone have any ideas ? thank you!

A:Help computer virus and my computer runs slow

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new Hijack This log

Someone told me to post this question in this forum, so here goes...

At first, I was wondering why after about 30 minutes of play, my computer would freeze or restart. Only when I was running a game that uses alot of power.

I just noticed that when I have windows task manager running as well, it says my computer is constantly running at 95%-100%. Normaly, if my compueter was using all its % of speed, it would slow down but I don't think it accualy is slowing down. It only freezes or restarts after a while.

My hard drive is not over loaded, it is rather empty. I have had one sujestion that it might be the power supply. I have an ok video card, but I have resently installed a new display driver from Nvidea...

I have had a trojen horse virus this past week, but norton quarentined it...

Any sujestions to what I can do to make my computer run normaly without freezing would be great. Thz

A:Computer runs at 100% :S

go to http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip it and make sure it is unzipped & placed into it's own folder, not a temporary folder. Then doubleclick the Hijackthis.exe.
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

So id your HDD not spinning at all?

And I have had this problem before. You said your cable/dsl connection wouldnt work, then your monitor wouldnt show anything. Sounds like your mobo could be fried, but you said you are getting signs of life from that.

And are you using a VGA card or onboard graphics?

A friend asked me to look at his computer. I'd never seen it before and really am not sure what it's state was prior to my receiving it.
It's a HP Mini loaded with XP SP3. It had some program that was irritating, a in sync or something to do with movies and music. I removed it which wasn't easy as the PC kept shutting down with a blue screen warning that was so quick, I never really saw what it was.
I was able to install Microsoft Security Essentials and after booting in a number of ways and multiple runs, most incomplete, I finally got a scan of complete nature and the program removed a number of Trojans and back door stuff.
I now have the PC running, it is giving an error message, something about delayed write in the temp folder, but for the most part, seems to accept prompts and commands.
There are no programs except for Microsoft security, IE and Outlook Express. No system tools, no restore points other than the one when I turned restore back on. All programs listed in add and remove seem to be gone as well.
There was no rescue disk made, no OS disk included and I think I've gone as far as I can without re-installing a new operating system for him.
Since I often come up against this, I'm just curious. Can viruses turn off restore points? Eliminate all programs such as was found on this?
Is there anything further I can do with this machine? Is it even worth bothering? LOL

A:Computer now runs but all is gone

You're infected by recovery rogue which hides all files and folders

A:Computer Runs Then Freezes

there could be several causes. the first thing to check would be the ram. run memtest ont he ram. it could also be damaged or missing system files. if you are running XP and have an XP Cd you can run system file checker. put the XP Cd in the drive and open a command prompt and type sfc /scannow then press enter this will run system file checker and replace any damaged or missing system files.

if you need more assistence you need to tell us about your hardware set up. ie; motherboard, CPU, ram, video, what version of windows, and what power supply and wattage.

Sometimes also orther explorer bar installed : www.search123forme.com/sp2.php.
Any suggestions on how to solve the problem.
Thank you

A:Computer runs sometimes very slow

For a slow computer, basic stuff to eliminate would be
chances of infection- if ur not sure, you might want to get ur log checked by a HTJ expert.
If there are too many items loading at start up, disable unnecessary ones.
Check ur HD space, if you havent already, run a disk cleanup and if the drive s fragmented, defrag it in safe mode after a chkdsk this can help improve performance.
How much RAM do you have? Consider adding more.
Aso if its been a long time, check if all ur fans are working fine and also blow out the dust.

So, I've done a lot of research and have put many things to the test. To explain the situation, my computer would freeze up sometimes and I'd have to clear my CMOS a few times now to make it work. It hasn't worked at all this time. I was slapping a moth on my computer and I was in a game of "Overwatch" in which the computer froze and has not  turned on since.

Things I've tried:
Clearing CMOS
Plugging in just the power for the motherboard and fans will show the fans run for about 4 seconds, switch off, then turn on until I turn it off again.
Pluggin in the monitor to the motherboard will show nothing.
No beeps regardless of what is and is not plugged in.
Lights on the motherboard will display at all times.
Tried having 1 stick of ram or switching ram around.
Tried cleaning CPU / placing CPU back in (Which I think is the right way (arrow pointing towards the square on the motherboard) This was one of the last things I tried.

The current result is often being able to turn on the "computer" and it will stall for a moment and then the fans will run for until I turn it off.

That's most of the things I've tried. A few things missing that I probably don't remember. I don't have any fancy gadgets or things to help me test anything. Regardless, thank you for anyone who can help.

New stuff is always good - but do you know that the problem is due to one of those (otherwise you'll have nice new stuff that still doesn't work

You may want to give this checklist a try:  http://www.carrona.org/strpdown.html
I'd also suggest posting over in the Internal Hardware forums, where the hardware guru's hang out:    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/7/internal-hardware/

HI, my computer turns on but there's NO picture. I have read other threads similar to mine and believe that it is my motherboard causing the problem, but how do I know its my CPU and not my motherboard, or maybe even both? If there is no "beep" during start-up, does that mean problems with the motherboard? How can i tell if its my CPU causing the problems? Please help! I've had no desktop for about 2 months and I need it for school =[

About 3 weeks ago my CD recorder quit working, then I started getting a lot of pop ups. I ran a virus scan and found nothing. Then I found a worm attributed to a photo program in facebook while trying to check my startup programs (I wish there was a simple spot to look them all up, even this site doesn't have half of what is on my computer). I deleted it , and ran another virus scan with Avanquest and windows defender and found nothing. My machine started running a lot. I contacted Avanquest and they had me download a program from trend micro their parent company (I think) and it found 3 Vundo trojans and 2 fakehealer trojans. My machine still kept running, and I had a guy go thru it. He installed Malwarebytes and it found a few more pieces of malware, but I'm not sure what they were, but most of the popups stopped. I installed a new CD/DVD recorder/player and it didn't work. (a code32 error) the computer couldn't find mejuwe... system 32 file. The guy I had working on my computer fixed that, but my computer still runs a lot. It works right (like it used to) for about 30 minutes, give or take, then the red light that comes on like it is doing something, the longer the computer is on, the more it works. The programs I am trying to run go slower too. It also makes the humming sort of sound like it does when it is doing something. I can have Internet unplugged the whole time with me not doing anything on the computer and it still does it. Today... Read more

Ever since I changed the fan on my video card my computer runs slower. At first, I was getting even hotter readings on my video card than with my old card. Now, I leave the computer next to an open window and get reasonable temperatures, but my computer still runs slower. This all happened after I replaced the fan. Anyone know why?

A:Computer Runs Slowly

the fan may not be rated for that video card. what kind of video card do you have? what kind of fan did you buy? is it copper? copper fans are way better because they are more conductive. did you use the thermal grease when you installed the fan?

I previously posted before but had to repost since HijackThis is not used for diagnosing problems. I think and I am pretty sure my computer has been infected with spyware. Anyways please find a copy of the DDS text and the attach.zip file.

Thanks! :)

Hello again,

Thanks for providing the proper logs. We now have a better idea.

Please uninstall the following programs:

Search Settings 1.2 <========== is a foistware. More info here

Java(TM) 6 Update 7 <========= outdated, therefore a security risks having it installed still. Unfortunately, Java does not uninstall these older versions when you update, nor tell you that you should. Java(TM) 6 Update 15 , however, can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now. An update should begin; follow the prompts.

LimeWire 5.1.2 <========This practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Please read this sticky:

Perils of P2P File Sharing

I would strongly urge you to remove it via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel as suggested in our
NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help page.

Quote:

p2p programs like uTorrent, Bittorrent, LimeWire, Morpheus, etc., as they are a major conduit for malware and a likely source of your current issues. See this link

Hi:
When starting my computer, vbc.exe runs in a command prompt. I never noticed this before and wonder if I should be concerned about it. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium. I did a full scan with Norton Antivirus, but that didn't correct the problem. The program still runs during startup. Is this a problem?

A:vbc.exe runs when starting computer

VBC.exe is Visual Studio (Microsoft)

Go to Start type in Msconfig locate Msconfig right click on it and select "Run As Administrator. In msconfig locate the Startup Tab then locate Visual Studio if present un-check it then clcik Apply then Ok. Now reboot when asked. When reboot is completed click on "Do not show this message again" click ok.

If all is well VBC.exe should not open when you load Windows.

A:Computer Runs Slow + LOP

Yep...that's LOP all right...let's do this, before even tackling the infection, to ID any hidden jobs and folders.

Download fl.zip
Extract the contents to a new folder on Desktop.
Within the folder, locate & double-click fl.bat.
It should produce a report at c:\findlop.txt. Post the contents of the report in your next reply

A:Computer runs very slow

What I usually do in this case is "msconfig" and disable all my "startup" programs that I dont need and maybe even some services that arent "microsoft". Try that then reboot and add the programs 1 by 1 rebooting after each to find the culprit program/service.

In case you dont know how to "msconfig" all you do is:

1)click start
2)click run
3)type " msconfig " without the quotes
4)uncheck unwanted programs/services from the "startup and services" tab.
