I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi

Welcome to the bleeping computer forum

Unfortunately, intermittent issues are one of the difficult fault to troubleshoot. Please follow the below steps to collect some basic info about your system.

1 ) Generate a report about your system using Speccy by reading the guide below.

   http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/323892/publish-a-snapshot-using-speccy/

Post the web link displayed by Speccy in next reply.

2 ) Download and run Minitoolbox from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.

-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size

Now click "Go" and post the output in next reply

After reading your logs, either me or any other forum volunteer will assist to you to diagnose the issue.

Edit:

Don't ever use the registry cleaning function in CCleaner or Glary utilities. Only use them to clean the temp files. Using registry cleaners may cause unpredictable damage to the registry. If anyone properly knows which registry keys are garbage, that is only Microsoft.

I have a compaq laptop with windows[I'm assuming]. I have downloaded a file using torrents and I recently downloaded photofiltre.

For some reason my laptop is running very slow. I've run AVG and McAfee and it has said there are no viruses only tracking cookies.

Is there anyway to make my laptop faster? I'm not sure what's slowing it down but we really have no huge files on it.

Whenever I try and watch youtube videos or any videos it laggs and stops.

Hi,
My computer has been running slow, especially when I do a restart, it takes forever to restart. I went into msconfig and disabled what is in startup. Question is what do I need in startup and what can I get rid of? and how do I remove something from startup?
Also what is a good free firewall to use?
Thanks Dano

A:Computer runs faster when I disable what runs in the background?

Here is a good explanation: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
There are certain (and important) items that should run at Startup.

If you are unsure of some of the entries you see listed, this is a great website to research them: http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html
It tells you what the process is, and if it's necessary to run at Startup.

A good firewall (and free one) is Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

Ok so, first of all im alex, this is my first post on this forum you guys have got

i have just yesturday bought an Acer 5536-644G32MN Laptop which is running vista.

i have a dialup internet connection (ha ha, please dont tell me to just get broadband)
which on my desktop computer running windows XP works fine,

Yesturday when i tried dialing up to my connection useing the inbuilt modem in my laptop, it connected but i noticed it was quite slow,
as in would take a few minutes to load google,
i went out for the day because i had other things to do,
when i came home later i tried the internet again, and it was working fine, just as well as it works on this desktop computer im on now.

now tonight when i tried connecting to the internet again it was realy really slow again, it would say its connected fine and running at 52kb but it wasnt loading pages
and 4 out of 5 times it would fail to sign into msn, and when it did sign in it woudl take a few minutes to show people online and then a minute later it would lose the connection to msn and sign out.
very frustrating
the inbuilt modem is a 56k ITU v.92 wake on ring ready (in the book it says that)

can anyone shed some light on the situation

i ahve tried disabling the mcaffee firewall on my laptop but that made no difference,

im not sure if this is a vista problem or something else

any tips?

A:Internet Running extremly slow (new computer)

Hi Alex, welcome to Tech Support Forums, First of all..... Get broadband :) Im just kidding, however that would solve your problem :P Have you contacted your ISP at all? They may need you to add some modem strings so your modem and isp can 'play nicely' that happens alot with software based modems, which are in most laptops.

Hi,

I am posting due to my Dad's work computer running extremly slow. The mouse movement is very jumpy, programs take an extremly long time to load and run much slower than my own computer, and the start-up is extremly slow. My sister often uses the computer for myspace etc, and I'm sure that shes been to a few dodgy sites that have caused the computer to slow down.

I was considerring buying more RAM (its on 1gb DDR at the moment), however it is not running any intensive processes (Symantec antivirus corporate ed., itunes and printer software are the main things running) andI'd rather see if a simple software fix can be implmented.

Attached is a Hijackthis log. There is no urgent need for a response, as there are likely higher priority requests from other people. Any assistance with this is greatly appreciated.

I immediately noticed the rouge anti-virus program "Spyware guard 2008" on it.
No matter what I do, I can't remove it.
I've deletes the registry keys, and the files in program files, but they come back.
I tried running superantispyware, Malwarebytes, and Spybot: S&D, however None of them will even start up.
The only solution I see is... installing Linux maybe?

Also, I'm rather new here, how do I get a signature on my posts?

I downloaded something off the internet and extracted the .exe file, my AVG-Anti Virus popped up and said that it detected a trojan, and asked me if i would like to remove it, i said yes and that was that. About 1 day later i restart my computer, and it freezes at the windows loading screen, it freezes over and over no matter how many times i try and start it. The only way i can get into the computer is to go into SafeMode. Once in safemode it goes so slow that i cannot do anything. If i click on the start menu in safemode - 5 minutes later the start menu will come up, it's ridiculous. I have tried Ctrl+Alt+Del to see if the CPU was bogged down, and it was at 0-1% usage, very strange. Anyone have any ideas ? thank you!

A:Help computer virus and my computer runs slow

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new Hijack This log

And I have had this problem before. You said your cable/dsl connection wouldnt work, then your monitor wouldnt show anything. Sounds like your mobo could be fried, but you said you are getting signs of life from that.

And are you using a VGA card or onboard graphics?

A friend asked me to look at his computer. I'd never seen it before and really am not sure what it's state was prior to my receiving it.
It's a HP Mini loaded with XP SP3. It had some program that was irritating, a in sync or something to do with movies and music. I removed it which wasn't easy as the PC kept shutting down with a blue screen warning that was so quick, I never really saw what it was.
I was able to install Microsoft Security Essentials and after booting in a number of ways and multiple runs, most incomplete, I finally got a scan of complete nature and the program removed a number of Trojans and back door stuff.
I now have the PC running, it is giving an error message, something about delayed write in the temp folder, but for the most part, seems to accept prompts and commands.
There are no programs except for Microsoft security, IE and Outlook Express. No system tools, no restore points other than the one when I turned restore back on. All programs listed in add and remove seem to be gone as well.
There was no rescue disk made, no OS disk included and I think I've gone as far as I can without re-installing a new operating system for him.
Since I often come up against this, I'm just curious. Can viruses turn off restore points? Eliminate all programs such as was found on this?
Is there anything further I can do with this machine? Is it even worth bothering? LOL

A:Computer now runs but all is gone

Someone told me to post this question in this forum, so here goes...

At first, I was wondering why after about 30 minutes of play, my computer would freeze or restart. Only when I was running a game that uses alot of power.

I just noticed that when I have windows task manager running as well, it says my computer is constantly running at 95%-100%. Normaly, if my compueter was using all its % of speed, it would slow down but I don't think it accualy is slowing down. It only freezes or restarts after a while.

My hard drive is not over loaded, it is rather empty. I have had one sujestion that it might be the power supply. I have an ok video card, but I have resently installed a new display driver from Nvidea...

I have had a trojen horse virus this past week, but norton quarentined it...

Any sujestions to what I can do to make my computer run normaly without freezing would be great. Thz

A:Computer runs at 100% :S

go to http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip it and make sure it is unzipped & placed into it's own folder, not a temporary folder. Then doubleclick the Hijackthis.exe.
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Virtually all software programs take time to come up, even little ones like Notepad. Have lots of slowdowns and freeze ups when using the internet, including trying to type in url's. Anytime the computer isn't in use for a little while, starting up again is always very slow with frequent little freeze ups. Lately, even when we first turn the computer on, we get a low on virtual memory warning in the lower right corner. Somebody told me this could be the problem. If so, why would it need more memory now than in the past when it worked ok? We actually deleted lots of files and some software programs not be used, including video games.

We used Spybot, Malwarebytes and our anti virus program a few days back and all 3 came up with no problems.

Thanks.

I have a Dell Dimension 4700C running Windows XP Pro SP3. About a month ago my PC was infected with the Internet Security 2010 virus. I believe that I cleaned the virus. However, since then my PC seems to run slowly.

I scan using Adware Free, Spybot and Malware bites and there is no malware or spyware. I use AVG Free for virus scan, no viruses detected.

I tested the unit on PC Pitstop and I see that at times the RAM utilization is over 80%. When I looked at the processes running I noticed that there were two instances of Interenet Explorer running.....one consuming 53 MB of RAM and a second one consuming 102 MB of RAM. Could this be causing some of my issues?

What info would be needed to look into the problem further?

hello ,

now what i need to do is go to your (device manager)

now once there you will want to select from the toolbar of the window(veiw) then a drop down menu / from it you will select (show all hidden devices)

now if you see any (red or yellow) quotation marks , make a note of what they

now go to the (event veiwer) this is thru the (administrator tools) in the control panel
here you will find 3 to 4 subcatagories

you will want to check each of them for this is where windows keeps track of all errors
now you will want to make notes of the errors that have been recorded ( you do not have to make notes of double entries just of the dates of their happenings & how many there is)
you will get more information on the errors if you (right) click them / then select properties

also

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to slipstream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/Windo...p2-bootcd.html

now if you do have the Windows XP cd with sp2 please follow these steps

Hi
My laptop has all of a sudden become incredibly slow. I did not install or remove any soft- or hardware before this, it just happened. I have since cleaned the registry, defrag'd, ran SuperAntiSpyware, did and undid several system restores, and updated Firefox. I restarted the computer in "safe mode" several times. I even tried to disable all but the essentials in the startup window of the System Configuration Utility and disabled/re-enabled everything under the "services" tab. On a previous computer I had a problem with restore points keeping bad information, so I decided to delete all restore points when there was no improvement after going back over a month for a clean running machine. I'm at a loss as to what to try next. I hpe you have some suggestions. The HT log is attached. Thanks!

Hi,

If I leave Firefox open and leave my computer for a couple hours, when I come back the entire computer runs really slowly. Usually Firefox is unresponsive and won't close unless I 'end task'. Also, when I reboot my computer, it can take several minutes before I am able to open Firefox or Microsoft IE. I click on the browser icon and the browser doesn't open for several minutes. Any help would be appreciated.

My son will be returning from Iraq soon, I have been using his computer to stay in touch with him. I have noticed it is running real slow now, Yahoo Messenger(latest version) freezes sometimes. Is there a checklist or some type of guide to follow for "tweaking" everything to speed it up, besides the usal, Defrag, Scan Disk, AdAware, SpyBot, etc. Can someone please help this disabled combat veteran help speed up my sons computer? Thank You.

For the past year when I turn on my computer, after 5-15 minutes the fan kicks on and runs constantly. It's really loud and is running at a high speed. As soon as the fan kicks on, the entire computer slows, almost to a halt and I have to restart it. I've been battling with Dell for the past year about it and they have replaced the following parts:
Fan (4 times)
Motherboard (3 times)
Heat Sink (4 times)
Processor (3 times)
Keyboard
I'm not sure what the keyboard had to do with anything, but oh well.
Even the day of replacing these items, the fan would STILL kick on. It kicks on even faster when watching a movie or getting on the internet. Throughout the past year, the internet has slowly gone away, I can no longer connect to internet...whether it's wireless, broadband, or dial-up.
What else could be causing the fan to kick on?
I have also reformatted the computer at least 3 times.
Thanks,
Ashley

Hello, I just got a brand new Dell Precision M4500 laptop with docking station + dual monitors from my employer. From what I understand, this is a pretty high-end laptop, with an i7 dual core processor and Quadro FX 1800M graphics. Its running Windows XP SP3. The issue I am having with it is that it runs like absolute garbage when I load pretty much any program. For example, when I start up AutoCAD (which this laptop is supposedly tailor-made for), for like 2 minutes the computer is borderline unresponsive as it loads the program, and once it finishes loading it still doesn't run great at all. Another frustrating experience is loading anything with java in internet explorer or firefox. It slows the computer down significantly while the java document or program is loading. I just installed the blackberry desktop software and that slows the computer down for 45 seconds or so while its starting up too.

To sum up, pretty much anything besides internet explorer seems like it is stretching the limits of this computer, which should not be the case at all. The computer does have full hard disk encryption, which I was wondering if that could slow it down, but I was assured that it doesnt. This computer is running as slow or slower than my old computer, which was like 1/10th the power of this one.

Now, on to what I believe is the source of the problem. I downloaded Process Explorer from the Microsoft website, and found that the process System is using ~... Read more

A:New Computer Runs Poorly

The nv*.sys files are usually nVidia drivers.

Check Device Manager. Click "show hidden devices"

Any flags ?

Uninstall, then reinstall the drivers.

I read about HD encryption. "They" say it doesn't slow down the computer, because the data on the hard drive needs "decrypting" for the computer to use anyways, so it's just a matter of HOW the data gets decrypted. So "they" say there's no slow-down. It's counter-intuitive, though. I have no personal experience with an encrypted drive, except that if your Operating System goes bad to the point where you can't boot, you have to decrypt the drive and then write it unencrypted before you can work on it. Load the encrypted drive as a secondary, have the encryption software installed on the machine, have the password (lol) and then re-write the whole drive as unencrypted. Fix the HD, then reverse the previous process.

A whole lot of messing around.

A computer with an I7 and XP both ? Doesn't that sound weird to you ? Bet it didn't ship that way. So maybe someone downgraded and failed to install correct drivers, or there are no drivers. Either way, seems to me your Tech people ought to be involved with this.

Have you run chkdsk ?
Turn off all non-MS Services and all Startups in "msconfig" and see if the problem goes away.

My computer is running very slowly. My son was home about a week and a half ago and downloaded a bunch of music illegally (which we've asked him many times not to do). Since then it's been slow. I've run Cloudcare antivirus, Spybot, AdAware, EZCleaner, CCleaner and Malwarebytes. All of this hasn't really helped.

Hey guys. I am on my friends Dell Dimension 3000. Not the top of the line computer as I'm sure you know, but it used to run good enough for her. However, now it runs incredibly slow. She hasn't installed a ton of programs on it, and she has virus software, runs ad-aware occassionally, I defraged it using Perfect Disk 8, and ran through the various features of WinASO.
