Windows Media Player refuses to turn on media sharing

Q: Windows Media Player refuses to turn on media sharing

Every since January 4th of this year, I have been trying to fix a very annoying issue with windows media player.
How It Started
Back in January my dad's computer constantly kept freezing over and over due to him having way to many podcast on his computer. I'm the only one who knew how to fix it from crashing and so I tried to delete some of the memory off the computer, however when
the memory was low I noticed that a few programs (including media player) were not functioning correctly. I was able to fix them but then I noticed that media player's entire library was missing, which made me think if I restarted the computer, it would fix
it. Sadly it didn't but I was able to find tutorials on how to restore the library back to MP, but the thing is before I attempted that, I went into media player with administrator on in hopes it would make a change. Of course it didn't but now there's a issue
that I face and I keep running into dead ends. Every single time I try to turn on media sharing in the WMP library, when I check both options and then click ok it doesn't do anything. No matter how many times I try to press it, nothing happens and also what
I find strange is that the ok button has a administrator prompt shield on it now. Kind of like it's trying to ask for permission but fails before it can do that.
The solutions I have tried
I have tried dozens of solutions and yet none of them fix the issue. I tried using regedit.exe and tried fixing it's registry but that didn't do anything. I tried fully resetting WMP entirely but that doesn't work either, nor does using service.msc. The
only lead I have that something may be broken is that when I looked inside service, WMP Network Sharing Service cannot startup.

At this point, I'm pretty burned out of ideas and this may be the most confusing bug I've ever faced. And now since Media sharing doesn't work, I can't stream music to my xbox 360.
If you somehow know the solution, please tell me.

Well, I'm not sure what to do here. Up until a few days ago I was sharing my media with all computers on my network on my wireless router.

Now when I log into windows and open WMP 11 it says that I am no longer sharing media, would you like to turn on sharing? So I say yes and confirm to share my media to all devices on my network, mainly my PS3.

I uninstalled it and reinstalled it (well it actually just reverted back). I also checked to make sure that Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service is set to automatic in Admin tools. And also checked windows firewall that it allows the service.

So I am at a loss here, I don't know how to get my media sharing capabilites back. I know its not my PS3, as I am sharing media from my laptop right now. Any suggestions?

Thanks High

PS3 and Vista Sharing Sorted
Found it. Disabled IPSEC Services and rebooted my router and hey presto media sharing in vista with PS3. Although I had disabled this before and restarted my computer I had not rebooted the router (ie turned it off and on again). This was the important thing on my set up and I missed it.

Funny thing is IPSEC Services do not have to be disabled in XP.

Hope this helps someone.

Hey everyone,

I am having troubles sharing my Windows Media Player 11 library on my Vista machine with my Windows XP computer.

Both players are sharing media the same way and automatically allowing new devices to connect.

My roommates computer see's both libraries as well as my Vista Computer. The XP machine does not see the shared library.

I have Trend Micro PC Cillin on my Vista machine. It is connected by cat5 to a Linksys Wireless router in gateway mode.

On my XP machine i have AVG antivirus with no firewall installed. It is connect to the Linksys wirelessly - bu so is my roomates laptop.

On both machines i have the latest .net framwork installed and on the xp machine i installed windows media connect.

I cant figure it out, i think it is a software problem and not a physical network problem.

any ideas?

Hello,

I have a home computer network between two computers. I would like to share my media from Windows Media Player 11 with my other computer. The music that I would like to share is the main computer that has the router and all connected to it. I know that under the options in Media Player, under the library tab there is a configure sharing button. I click that, check the "share my media to:" but my other computer connected to the network is not listed. Is there something I have to do with firewall on either computer? Please help.

Thanks.

hi,

I'm trying to share my windows media player library that is on my win 7 pc with my xp laptop.

I can navigate from my laptop to folders on my win 7 pc and play files that way but I'm trying to get the library option working.

Both computers are in the same workgroup and are both visable in the same workgroup from my xp laptop. However if I go into network on my win7 pc I can see the laptop in the computer section but not in the media device section.

When i then go into the sharing options on the win7 windows media player i can not see the xp laptop so I can't allow sharing.

I guess the problem is that my xp laptop is only showing up as a computer and not a media device? anyone know why this is?

I have turned of my firewall to check that and it has no effect.

thanks

A:media sharing in windows media player 11

You can't share Library's with any computer other than Windows 7. Library sharing can only work if all the machines in the LAN are Windows 7. Although you should be able to stream and share your music using Workgroups.

You should be able to share the WMP files by making these adjustments. Click on more media options to allow for media sharing with your XP machine.

I am using XP and have been trying to get my media to share to my xbox 360 and at first the system said I had an ip address issue, even though I could connect to the internet. Now however, it won't find the pc. Upon going to Window Media Player's library/media sharing section, I am prompted with this message: Media sharing has been turned off because a required Windows setting or component has changed. I have tried all of the obvious quick fixes and nothing works, does anyone have any suggestions as Microsoft is less than helpful telling me something, somewhere has changed? Thank you.

A:Windows Media Player won't allow media sharing

I have also checked in the C:/documents/username/applicationdata/microsoft/media player to delete the files like so many have suggested, but there is nothing inside.

After much trouble getting Windows Media Player to "see" several music files, I finally was able to burn a CD for use on a common stereo player. All tracks are short because they are simply sound effects for use on stage. I create a burn list of 1Music, 2Music, etc., through 25Music. I end up with 1Music through 23Music, but short the other two.

I'm getting panicky in that I must have these for play rehearsal soon. Please help.

Try CDBurnerXP. It's free and intuitive to use. Don't worry about the "XP" in the name. It's regularly updated and works on Vista/W7/W8

Edit: To burn a standard audio CD just select Audio Disc then drag and drop the files on. It can convert mp3 and flac on the fly.

I have recently bought a new laptop running Windows 7 and after about two weeks windows media player has stopped working!

When i click the WMP icon on the bottom taskbar the icon goes red and the blue dounut appears to acknowledge the command then nothing happens. The dounut dissapears, the colour fades but no action, no error message, nothing!

When i try to play a media file from the file location itself, the message appears: 'server execution failed'

I cannot roll back to a previous version as the system is so new

I downloaded a version of WMP 11 but could not un-install my current WMP as it does not appear in the control panel - unintall programmes menu

I also cannot load the downloaded version as i get an error message telling me that a more recent version is already installed on my system.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Hello all, I tried to reply to the thread with a similar title to provide a correct answer. So I am reintroducing the topic and providing an answer that seems to work.

Problem: I want to use media player with very minimal frame. Many answers are "play full screen". But I know that media can be played in windows media without any skin, very minimal framing and floating media controls over the video that auto hide when you move away.

Answer:

Press Ctrl-2. This puts you in a skin mode. There should be menu items at the top: File, View, Play, Tools, Help
Choose View->Skin Chooser
You are now in the full media player experience. Do not choose a skin. Click the 3 square & arrow thing at the bottom "Switch to now playing"
Viola! No skin, minimal borders and floating media controls.

I have no idea why this is not a simple option. I think what I am choosing is the most basic skin, maybe not even intended for use. But this is my favorite player, super simple.

The point of Windows Media Sharing is not to be some sort of P2P application, but rather like a radio station that you can tune into specific tracks. If you don't already own the music you're trying to burn then it's really not a legal practice you're getting into.

Windows Media Player 11 - share my songs?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can you tell me how to share the music on my main pc with a laptop that is networked to it please.
Went to - Library - media sharing But could not see the laptop (although it is visible in Network places)
Should I be doing something else?
Also do I have to add all the music files to the laptop? As a large folder Or can I just click on the links??

A:Windows Media Player 11 and sharing my music

Why don't you try sharing the files on the network. If your computer is networked properly then they should show up in network places. Right click the file, then click on the sharing tab and click share on network. (These instructions might be wrong as im not booted in windows right now.) If they are all in the same directory, i.e. My Music, then you can just click play all when you navigate to the folder in My Network Places. Alternatively you could select the files you want right click them and click play with windows media player.

So, I just decided to switch to 7. I had to use ps3 media server before on xp (my primary choice of OS) for my network which was fantastic to say the least, however I also have an xbox. ps3 media server doesn't stream music correctly yet and I wanna listen to my damn music! cause I've got 5.1 surround!

Anyways! on with my problem. I prefer to use the administrator account ONLY, so I created a dummy user named "user" just to let me past the setup, then I soon after deleted that user and moved in to administrator. Now when I stream using wmpnss, both the administrator and the account "user" appear in the device selection on both my ps3 and my xbox 360 I want the account "user" to not show up anymore on my devices because its useless and it just doesn't look right to me. Just seeing it every time reminds me of this little bug and it bugs me!

A:Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service

Figured it out shortly after just in case anyone should somehow run in to this problem again

All you have to do to remove a user from the list of shares in wmpnss on your device is:

DELETE LEFT OVER FOLDER FROM "C:\USERS" FROM THE DELETED USER
(in my case the folder is "User")

*if you cant remove that folder, try booting into safe mode and deleting it from there*

Windows media player has included in it a nice little .exe file that automatically starts every time I bring my computer out of Sleep Mode.

Within 5 minutes, this little program is easily using up 80% of my RAM, making it impossible for me to smoothly run my PC.

I have tried everything I can to uninstall, delete, and get rid of this, but nothing works.

When I try to delete the whole "Windows Media Player" folder from my Program Files I get a warning saying I need Permission from TrustedInstaller. Same thing happens when I try to delete just this one program inside of the file.

I have gone into my Network and Sharing Center in my homegroup and set it to where ALL media streaming is blocked, as is any other type of sharing. I used to use this to Stream movies to my 360, so it kinda sucks that I had to do this. BUT, this temporarily fixes it. Turning off all my sharing, then opening up Task Manager, and getting End Task on this item will usually turn it off for about 2 hours, then it comes back, and slowly works its way up my list of programs, eating up my RAM as it goes.

I am wondering if there is an permanent solution to rid myself of this pesky annoying program, so that I can stop having to end it in Task Manager

I have been having this issue for almost a year I haven't been able to figure out a fix yet. I use windows media player to share my song playlist on my xbox 360 since my computer has most of my songs, but for some reason media streaming has stopped being
accessible. I reset media player and now the streaming feature is completely locked.

When I go to the drop down list from library and click ''media streaming'' and check both boxes (share my media & find media that others are sharing) a administrator shield appears on the ''Ok'' button however nothing happens. It seems as if it's supposed
to give a admin prompt but that never happens. I have tried multiple solutions

Fix Media Player's Registry (Didn't work)Go into services and make the streaming automatic and press start (Doesn't work)Remove the Media Player's folder and let the library reform (Still nothing)Forget about it? (I tried)Reinstalling Media Player (Not a single thing changed)
Since I couldn't figure it out I had to use an app on android as a substitute ever since but that however takes up memory on my tablet. I have only seen 1 other forum post that included the mysterious admin prompt icon but no one could solve his issue.

Does anyone out there know how to set Windows Media Player so that it doesn't just automatically start playing a DVD when I insert one? If I have it open and I'm listening to music or something, if I insert a DVD, media player will just assume I want to watch it right then, when in fact I may just be putting it in there for later, etc. Try as I might, I can find no setting that tells the program to stop automatically playing the DVDs, so I'm wondering if anyone here has any clue? I know the program thinks it's helping me but the truth is it's actually kind of annoying when it begins playing back discs I don't want to play yet, so if there's a way to stop that- I'd love to find out about it.

Thanks in advance,

Snaithbert

Hi,

I'm having some annoying problems with Media Player...

About a month ago, I got a 'Database corrupt' message upon starting Media Player 11 - it recovered fine, found all my mp3s (just over 3000) again, aside from 1 album it's consistently failed to pick up for some reason, and everything was back to normal.

Last week however, the same thing happened again - only this time, Media Player chose to only add about a third of my files. Trying to add the remainder manually was unsuccessful.

I checked online for advice, deleted the database and tried again - the same thing happened, except this time it only found about a fifth of my files.

So, I uninstalled Media Player and all of its updates, which rolled it back to version 9, deleted the database, reinstalled version 11, and tried again. This time only about an eighth of the files! I then tried adding the files in Media Player 9, but exactly the same thing happened.

There doesn't seem to be any common factor linking the mp3s it arbitrarily picks up i.e. it isn't the first alphabetically, first/last added etc., and files it hasn't picked up at one point, are picked up if I try again.

I've also tried emptying out the 'My Music' folder, then replacing the files - all of which are MP3s ripped straight from the CD.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - the PC's specs are as in my signature

A:Media Player refuses to find files...

Uninstall 11, delete the database and rollback to 9. Then install version 10 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...53-3759-40cf-80d5-cde4bbe07999&displaylang=en

Version 10 is much more stable and has more functionality than 11. 11 still has a lot of bugs.

Instead of having WMP search for your music files, add them manually by dragging the folder(s) into the WMP library. If all you have in your My Music folder is Mp3 files you could drag in the whole My Music folder.

Hey All,

I've been killing myself over this issue and I desperately need some help troubleshooting.

I have three Windows 7 machines on the same network. One laptop in particular is causing me a headache. I've got sharing enabled, it's all set up on a Homegroup, and Windows Media Player is set up to share media. Password protection is off...essentially all the crucial settings for sharing are set properly, so far as I know.

Yet, media files on this problematic laptop do not appear as available from Windows Media Player on either of my two other PCs. I can see the laptop on the network as a computer, but not a "media device" and from WMP, I don't see the laptop as available .

I can navigate to the music folder and see the music files, I can even play them from the remote PCs, but the files can't be shared to any media players, not even (as mentioned) Windows Media Player.

Any ideas? Seems like there is something way up the permission tree that is causing the problem, but I can't find it.

Thanks for any and all help!

A:Windows Media Player says it is sharing, but files not visible or playable

Just took a look at my Network map, and there is an "unknown" connection between my laptop and the access point. I can't get further info on it. Think this might have something to do with it? Firewalls and anti-virus programs are disabled.

I recently got an xbox 360 and i tried setting up Media Center and Media Player on it but i can never get a connection to my PC but media center opens and opens some of my music but an error shows up that there was an error with the operation when you try to play the song. So i tried foregetting that and set up my xbox to see my PC to use media player but everytime i try to let media player share, i get the Sharing Service has stopped message every single time. I would really like to play music on my xbox through this way. Any help?

I currently have Vista Home Premium, LINKSYS wireless router (WRG55G i believe) but everything atm is directly connected. Help MUCH APPRECIATED.

I use Windows Media Player to stream media to my xbox 360. Up until last week when I messed with some permissions/ownership settings in the System 32 folder (I know...very, very bad idea in the first place) everything was streaming fine, but a few days ago my xbox was not connecting to my pc (my pc was not found by my xbox even though I had media sharing to my xbox enabled). I performed a system recovery hoping that the permissions would revert back and fix my problem, but that did not fix the problem. After further research on my part I opened Event Viewer and found the following error which I'm 99% sure is the cause of my problem.

Event viewer info:

I'm setting up a new laptop running Windows 8.1. I keep finding the Windows Media Network Sharing Service keeps starting up when the PC is otherwise idle and running at 90% + CPU load for long periods. There is no demand for media streaming when the process is running.

What is this process for? Can I disable it or reconfigure it to reduce the CPU load?

A:Windows Media Player Sharing Service - High CPU Useage

Sure, you can disable it safely, unless you share your media files.

I have Windows Media Player 10 and Total Video Player. I use Total Video layer to watch some movies. Anyway the default program to open audio/video files with keeps switching to Total Video Player. I want the default player for all media types to be WMP. I went into the options menu in WMP and checked all the boxes on all formats for WMP to be the default player, but every time I restart the computer the default player to open half of the media files reverts back to Total Video Player.

How do I fix this.

A:Windows Media Player wont stay remain as the default media player?!?!
