Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

Q: Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

This is an inconvenient delay, not anything serious. Running Windows 7, if it makes a difference.

Issue: Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates block Microsoft Updates until MSE is finished.

Description: I have Microsoft Update (or Windows Update, whichever it's known as in 7) set to automatically check for updates but not download or install without my approval. I do this so I can review what's being updated, (I'm a little wary of Microsoft putting an anti-piracy app in as a "critical" update in the last year or two). Anyways, when I boot up the computer, it checks for updates and alerts me of them.

However, Microsoft Security Essentials also auto-checks for updates upon boot, and if it has an update it will automatically being downloading and installing it in the background. Which is all well and good, except whenever that's happening it causes MU to "fail" updates until it's done updating. Thus, I have to remember to wait until the MSE update is done, then run the MU update.

Question: MSE definition updates are included under "Optional" updates in MU, is there a way to make MSE stop updating independent of MU so I can queue all the updates together? I feel like this would be the easiest way to prevent this annoyance. I don't see an option, and I'd rather put up with this annoyance if the only solution is to put all updates back into Microsoft's hands completely.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My understanding of MSE is it will check several times during the to make it has the latest updates. Most GOOD VA programs will do this as there are several releases daily for AV definitions. This is the only way you and your machine will be aware of these releases.

When some of these attacks happen, a definition is released, but as the infection is refined, the the definition must also be refined and/or improved. I use F-Prot on my machines, but I install MSE on the kids and grand kids machines. I have seen as many as 12 releases in one day from F-Prot, this is what is call" being on top of things".

So I would not want to rely on ME being the one to check several times daily on all of my machines to see if a new release has been made.

I have windows xp Professional Version 2002 sp3. Seems I got a virus when I down loaded a movie(my bad). Was getting the BSOD, and alerts for Windows Automatic Updates to be turned on. Also I am running Microsoft security essentials which also won't update. Although Malwarebytes updates automatically. I downloaded Superantispyware and ran it 3 times in safe mode .Found and deleted malware. Rebooted and so far no BSOD ( fingers crossed). Still get the alerts for the updates.

Hey All,

If you use Microsoft Security Essentials, (MSE) as your Anti-Virus protection, which I love for it's lightweight resource usage, and how it does not get in the way of other programs, you may be wondering how it gets it's updates and interacts with Windows Update. Please note that MSE applies to all current versions of Windows EXCEPT Windows 8, which has Windows Defender built in as its anti-virus:

Windows 7 Home edition PC.

I'm getting the 0x80073b01 Error Code when I install Security Essentials after it completes the installation but before it starts the program for the first time.  If I click on it from the start menu, it gives the same error as I try to start it.  I believe the same problem is preventing the Microsoft updates from happening as well....they show two new critical updates needed, but it is never able to install them.

Found the program titled "PC Speed Fix" installed on her computer.  I uninstalled it, and after reboot it shows up again (now it is not showing up in her installed programs list).

I have ran updated versions of Malwarebytes and SpyBot...both removed some items, but still unable to start/run Security Essentials.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!  Thanks!!

Does anyone know why Microsoft canceled support/discontinued Microsoft Expression Web and why Windows Live Essentials, especially Windows Live Writer hasn't been updated in years? Both are great products but Windows Live Writer is my heartbeat but I stopped using it as i realized that Wordpress' dashboard is easier to work with now as it has been updated and I can upload my image galleries for a post flawlessly in WP's dashboard.

Windows Live Writer can't upload WordPress galleries to the WordPress site directly. It can only work with Picasa and OneDrive and the files are stored on those accounts while only the thumbnails get publisher to my WordPress site. I can't get the thumbnails to work in this manner anymore either as when i try to upload galleries using Windows Live Writer I get error messages saying it won't go through. That's why I stopped using Live Writer.

Expression Web seems okay but Adobe Muse can do better effects but I don't use Muse right now as it is problematic. Expression Web is still available, just has been made free with little or no support. Microsoft seems to do well in reducing costs when things don't sell well due to competition from third-party products. As with all software one has to consider the advantages and disadvantages for their needs. I had to drop FrontPage when I went with the 64-bit version of Office 2010 and Expression Web is fine for my need. As for WordPress that was recommended by my Domain Host, I just couldn't get around the blogging part so do not use it. Serif has a product called WebPlus [ WebPlus X7 - Easy to use and professional web design software from Serif ] that seems useful but since they've moved all their offices to the UK my MasterCard and Visa cards get blocked by the card company 'due to high card fraud from the UK' so I'll keep my eyes open for alternatives.

Hello,

My colleague at work had malwares infections on her computers at the begining of this week. MSE and Malwarebyte could remove "a lot" of them, and in fact both of them now see the PC as clean. In deed there were some typical malware's action in browsers that seem to be now gone (google links redirectionc, auto opening of IE while FF is the defaul browser and running, etc.)

But then there is this really strange "Windows Security" window that keeps appearing and blocking (without any choice) all updates for Adobe programs, and also AVIRA (preventing installation), and some more, and i find it really suspicious.

So my question is the following : is it a remaining malware that cannot be detected or just a problem with windows security parameters ? Because it sure does looks like a Windows window, but that doesn't mean it is one, and i find this behaviour really weird (ok with Windows that doesn't mean anything either ). It is also not connected to MSE, since disabeling it doesn't keep this window from appearing (same with windows firewall).

So i come here to ask for help from the pros to sort it out.

Here is a picture of this window (in Spanish, since the infected system is in spanish), when it blocked the update for PDF :

Hey there. Why does MSE update in both in two different ways? You can manually update it from it's opening screen of MSE! Then you can update it from Windows update.

I'm not a fan of this. I'd rather see all the updates come via MSE only and not through Windows update motor.

To those what's your take on this? Thanks everyone!

A:Microsoft Essentials updates??

Since it's a Microsoft program, they will of course have it be able to be updated through Windows Update as well as manually through the program. It doesn't really matter which option you use to update the program since it will only update from either or and not both for that specific update.

You could also set Windows Updates to not show updates for other Microsoft programs using step 8 in this tutorial below to not have them there.

I'm unfortunately still using XP because of $$ issues. I switched to Mozilla long ago, but my MSE anti virus was using IE8 to update because Microsoft website says to set IE as the default browser for updating and scanning MSE. So I left IE as the default browser but used Mozilla for everything else on the web. After the news yesterday that IE is unsafe, I changed Mozillla to my default browser and MSE will not update today. Or maybe I just have the latest definitions and they haven't been updated yet for today's date ??? So since IE is unsafe would I be inviting disaster if I set IE back to default browser and only used it to update MSE? Or should I delete MSE altogether and download another anti virus if I can find a free one?

I'm not a total cheapskate. It will just take a while for me to save up the cash to upgrade. I'm thinking about refurbs too.
Also: When I do upgrade, I don't want microsoft anymore.. Their frequent changes don't always translate into better operating systems. I don't want google because I've read that it doesn't have i tunes. Apple is way too expensive for me. What's left? Does linux and/or ubuntu come preinstalled on any newer laptops? If I installed linux myself, what website do I go to for safe downloads? There seem to be a LOT of them.

I can't upgrade my current XP laptop to windows 7 for example (if it could be) because for some reason the CD/DVD drive stopped working a few years ago.... Read more

Hello Kattree

There are a lot of questions in your Post which refer to different areas of computing. You may receive more informed answers if you asked your questions in different Posts. - BUT don't duplicate your post - the TSG Moderators will not be happy if you do that

Q1. - MSE won't update. Update the Virus and Spyware definitions manually directly from the MSE interface. The lastest Virus and Spyware definitions are 1.173.1026.0 You shouldn't have any problems with the update if you use Firefox and make it your default browser

Q2 - Is IE8 safe to use with XP. Short answer - NO. Don't go back to using IE8 for anything

Q3. - Should I try a different Free AV - Short answer - Yes. There are plenty of very good products out there. Do a little research yourself. e.g. Avast, AVG, Avira.... all good, all free. But read the reviews and decide which is right for you.

Q4 - You don't want Microsoft anymore. - Hmmm.... there are a few million that feel that way..... but the truth is that moving from Windows to something else e.g. Linux is not like changing your car from a Toyota to a Honda. Moving to a different OS is a very big decision which requires extensive research. In the end (unless you are a big techie guru) you will probably stay with Windows, so make your plans to include the Windows option.

I have tried updating Security Essentials, and get "connection failed" - even though there is a good connection.
I tried downloading the update file (mpam) on a few other computers, and those never complete either.
I first noticed this yesterday (1-15-13) but the problem continues.
I'm trying to get the download file because that takes a lot less time that updating thru the program, and in this case the program can't even get the file.
Is there a problem with Essentials downloads?
It makes no difference what computer I use, I can't get past about 2% of the download. None of the computers are infected - all scans show clear.

I have recently installed Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) on Windows 7. To my surprise, I discovered that updates are delivered not just when requested via MSE but also as an optional update via Windows update. I have downloaded some through Windows update but that seemed to cause a few problems - Windows update stopped working (error code 80244019), for example. That probem has now been sorted out, but I still wonder why these MSE updates appear in Windows update as optional updates. Should one simply ignore them and download using MSE instead?

That is normal. Is MSE (free version) suppose to update automatically or not?
I am running Windows 7 Pro 64bit version.
I have been manually updating it every day or so and I have it set to check for updates before it runs a scan, but I only scan my computers about once a week, is that enough?
Also how often does Microsoft really create NEW definition updates.... Daily, Weekly or what?
I had a problem last week with MSE not being able to update at all, manually or through the Windows Update under Optional Updates.... I finally used my System Restore and went back several days and that problem went away.
I am not sure what caused the problem to start with since it was on one of the computers the kids play games on at free sites. It could of also been caused by windows update, since other people have had problems with not being able to manually update MSE too, I seen it on several other post in other forums, giving an error in connection failures.
Sorry to have been so long, just thought maybe someone else may be still having this same problem with MSE not updating.
Thanks for any info.

If you're relying solely on MSE to protect that computer, you need to make use of other security-related programs.

Go to Norton 360 look for place where I can allow the 3 URLs and discover lists and lists of things but I can't find the place to enter the URLs - abbreviations to lots of things are meaningless to me.

Notice that Norton 360 insists I use their backup (already backed up to portable hard disk) so I try anyway - fill in everything and can't back up as Norton says I am not connected to internet - check and confirm that I am.

It is just too complicated so I am thinking of scrapping Norton and installing another AV (I have a spare subscription) but thought that I would post this (my first question) to see if you guys can help me. Probably obvious answer but try as I may I couldn't find it.

My problem: Win10 update has parked itself in the windows update section and will not allow me to update my security files unless I start its download. I did a system restore back to Jul 22 thinking that would get rid of it but to no avail. It is still in my update section. I do not want to put this on my system yet as everyone says might be better to wait for bugs to work out. I have found a new flaw on this issue. It turns out that if IE is NOT the default browser, the option to move from Windows only to MS Updates will be missing! I guess this is part of the improved customer experience. This is after the site is added in compatibility

We were unable to get Office updated with Chrome as the default brower. Even using IE and pasting in the Windows update link directly in, the option to use MS Update is hidden. For what possible purpose?
Simply by setting IE as the default and using the EXACT SAME LINK, the option is now present. Wow! Really?

There is a lot of Microsoft spy ware included in certain updates nobody wants on their computers and if performing a Dist-Upgrade will embed them without an option to remove them later, then we would rather do the installation without them; and choose what
we want to upgrade later.
Examples of Windows 7 Native Telemetry/Spyware updates and the necessary steps to harden your PC against Microsoft (TM) spy ware:

For windows 10 users, I recommend blackbird www.getblackbird.net/ , (also works on windows 7) O&O Shutup 10 https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10 , and Spybot-Anti-beacon   https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/
For windows 7, Ancile, Blackbird, Spybot Anti-Beacon

Also make sure your Persistent routes is clean under TCPIP parameters, I had 329 embedded entries the majority of which were pointing directly to Microsoft servers.

Will an in-place dist upgrade of a Windows/OS with Updates included embed updates in such a way they cannot be uninstalled later?

I tried installing admuncher and update to Acrobat Pro 8.0. With Acrobat, when I select update from the help menu nothing happens. I figure this must be avg av software, or a win 7 security feature that is blocking program installs+updates (my guess it is more likely Win 7). I don't know where to start to solve problem. Only account on Win 7 is my admin account.

A:(avg or) win 7 security blocking program installs+updates

It could be a security setting or an addon in your browser.

Its been doing most of these updates forever, when I go to shut it down it updates but when I wake up in the morning these updates are still not done... It's like they never finish. This happens every night for the past 6 months or so i'm getting tired of it now so i need some help. I've tried Reset Windows Update History that works for a week or so but they eventually come back.

I have a whole ton of security updates for windows XP going back over 2 years in my Add/Remove programs list and I want to know if it is safe to delete those older than the most recent ones. Its taking up too much space on my computer and because of that I have stopped any current regular updates by switching off the automatic updates settings. Could someone please advise me if it is safe to do this?

We use a third-party Microsoft patch management system, unfortunately we have to approve all patches manually. It has become a monotonous task to jump on the security bulletin and manually "take-note" of all of the updates released (KB numbers)
to mitigate that vulnerability. After I take note of all of them, I have to jump on the "third-party Microsoft patch management system" and approve every patch (KB #) associated with that Bulletin.
I am wondering if there is an easier way to get a list of all of the new Microsoft patches released just for a specific Microsoft Security Bulletin. My current method is just sifting through the Bulletin and copying/pasting every KB number I find that is
designed to patch the vulnerability.
I would assume there is somewhere I can go or a tool I can utilize which would allow me to get the list of all of the KB numbers that need to be approved.
Or Am I out of luck (And just have to sift through the Bulletin to collect the associated KBs)?

I appreciate any and all suggestions/advice/ridicule.

Hi,
Get-MsrcSecurityUpdate does not seem to list some "security only" updates in the xml output.
It does list all the other updates including Monthly rollups. Is there a way to retrieve this?
For example, the following updates are missing from the output when the command
Get-MsrcSecurityUpdate -Year 2017 was executed:

4015548, 4014985,   4014986,   4014987 and 4014988.

Some users of windows 7 claim that microsoft security updates are not necessary. They claim that their computer runs faster without them. Are there members of this forum that ignore the updates without problems?

A:Are Microsoft Security Updates Really Necessary?

Hi Huck,
In my humble opinion yes.
Most people became infected in 3 ways.
They open a message attachment
Download what they think is a safe program
or visit an infected site.

Either way the code is injected into your comp, partially due to the lack of dilligence of the user,
me included i was multi-tasking at the time. but in my defence it was none of the above

Now there looking for other ways that are not so user reliant, ie OS orientated and the patches that MS are issuing are to stop these.

Why do you think there are so many AV and AM companies are out there.

Roy.

Yesterday my computer downloaded automatic Security Updates from Microsoft. There were 9 updates downloaded. As my computer was installing the updates, each one gave a message at the end of its installation. The first 2 said done. The remaining 7 each said failed. When all were complete, my computer asked to be rebooted, which I did. I never got a message saying that anything was wrong, but with new security alerts out there, I want to make sure that my computer is protected. What do you think? Thanx Steel

I recently purchased a new Accer laptop with XP Media addition/AMD Turion 64x2 dual processor, following the death of my previous laptop. Do I really need all of these automatic security updates from Microsoft? I have all of the standard protective software and I'm having no problems. I'm concerned that all of the security and automatic updates are going to slow my system down similar to what a couple of my friends are experiencing with their new Vista platforms. They hate Vista and it's driving them nuts...

Welcome to TSG....

If your car has to be upgraded by the manufacturer of the car you get them, well it is the same thing from Microsoft they are the owners of the operating system and they say that the upgrades should be downloaded.

Enough of what Microsoft wants since it is your computer but still Microsoft's OS I really think that yes you should install al of the updates including service pack 2 these will help keep your system secure and also protect against infections, make the internet connection more dependable and a lot of other things. Ir-regardless of what others say these updates are a necessary thing and really should be done.

It is better to be safe than sorry.

I have Microsoft Office 2007 installed on my computer and ever since October of last year all of the Microsoft Office Security updates have been failing. They always fail and stay on my updates list for the next time. Any program associated with Microsoft Office like Excel, Outlook etc. or just Microsoft Office System updates. Also this is not associated with updates but everytime I install Realplayer onto my notebook almost immediately or if I restart my computer when I try to open Realplayer it acts like it has been deleted and wants to search for the program because it cannot be found even tho I just installed realplayer.
Thank you if you can help!!

Howdy,

I have been putting off downloading IE-8. I have read that many people are having all kinds of problems with it.
I am wondering though if I am compromising my computers security by not doing so.
I currently have XP Home, IE-7, SP-3.

One of my questions is will Microsoft still have security downloads available for IE-7 or will all security updates from now on pertain only to IE-8 ?

I have my computer set to receive automatic priority downloads but there has not been any since 4-25-09.

When I check the download site all I see is IE-8 ready for me to download. Which begs another question. Why did IE-8 not download automatically ? (I am glad it didn't, just curious)

Thanks for your time.

Dennis

A:Questions About Microsoft Security Updates

Usually larger downloads will notify you but not actually download. That was true of SP3. IE8 is supposed to be more secure. I was using an ISP branded version of IE6 and it was getting awfully buggy. My ISP isn't upgrading so I upgraded to IE8 last week and ditched the branded browser. My computer seems to be browsing faster and no more bugs. So far so good.
