in 2000 my desktop wont load. Must use task mngr to open programs then icons load.

Q: in 2000 my desktop wont load. Must use task mngr to open programs then icons load.

I have a dell 810 laptop. I know I can reload the OS but it would have to be a clean install. I dont have all the software for some of the programs on my laptop.

My desktop wont load, but I can use task mngr to access programs.Once I do that the desktop loads as normal. Any suggestions?

Preferred Solution: in 2000 my desktop wont load. Must use task mngr to open programs then icons load.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I know this is similar to couple of posts which were posted before but still this issue is different. I have windows xp OS and whenever i boot my computer....only the desktop image comes up. The desktop icons, windows bar, task bar.....flicker initially but finally nothing else comes up. When i open the Task Manager and try to run explorer.exe...it does not work. I am not sure what to do or how to solve this issue. I tried to run the windows safe mode...safe mode with command prompt...last good configuration settings..nothing works!! Any ideas how to resolve this? This started happening all of a sudden today and till yesterday it was working fine!!! Not sure even if i try to run some utility...how i would do it since nothing's working!!

This is a dell laptop and i am not having any windows XP cd.

THanks in advance.

I don't know what I did wrong in my posting but I never got a reply

anyways.. I have an update just in case someone finds themselves in a similar situation with similar conditions.

I kept running malwarebytes (total full scans= 4) and also Spybot search and destroy until I have no other infections, the infection was first found within a folder inside documents and settings (I forgot the location) and later it appeared in a system volume folder (I believe it was one of the folders from system restore) eventually no other threats were found, then I was able again to load the system in normal mode (the malwarebytes scans were being done in safemode) and after several reboots for testing there were no more traces of the infection causing the random errors when opening applications, and no more missing icons and sections. I did a house call scan and a karspersky online scan with no threats found. system became properly responsive again.

the treat had a very special behaviour: in the middle of my attempts to get rid off it, there was a point in which the system responded so well that I thought that the threat was gone (after first malwarebyte run), when I rebooted though I was back to square one. the lesson learned is that malwarebytes or the tools being used may have to be run more than once until full cleaning is confirmed.

keeping fingers crossed customer may not call back in a while!

First off I suddenly got the Antivirus Pro. Went to your forums and tried the removal guide, went to taskbar and tried to end process on antiviruspro.exe and svchast.exe. Then I downloaded Malwarebytes and tried to scan, about 10 seconds into the scan the program shutdown. I also tried to run SDfix and as soon as it started scanning it shut down. I rebooted and started in safe mode with networking, when I did this Windows Antivirus 2010 also appeared on my desktop along with antivirus pro. Next I downloaded the trial of avast and did the scan on startup since I couldn't get any programs to run. During the scan it said it deleted Antispyware 2010 along with about 5 other trojans that I forget what they are and failed to write down. After the scan I rebooted in safemode with networking once again and now my desktop will not load. The only way I can try to open a program is through the taskbar using ctrl alt del. Tried running explorer.exe, tried Old Timer program, tried fix.reg w/notepad and still nothing happens. I don't know what else to try to get my desktop back. Im not even sure if I got rid of either of the viruses, they don't show up in processes in the taskbar but I cant get anything to work. Every program except internet explorer shuts down or wont open altogether. I hope I have explained all of this well enough. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hello everyone im new to the forums but i have a interesting problem which i have tried to solve with a couple solutions already. When i start windows my computer hangs at the 'Welcome' screen for about 30 seconds. Then it loads just the background of windows but pauses with no icons or task bar. I'm able to run Task Manager while it is in this state, but in about 2 minutes the icons and the task bar appear and everything seems to work normally.

I've tried the following already. Running explorer.exe through task manager (Which is already running)
A clean startup where nothing starts up except the bare essentials of windows.
I started windows in safe mode and the icons and taskbar appear as normal.
Complete scan for virus and malware which showed no results.

I've tried searching around for a solution without any of the above working so far so any help or suggestions would be very helpful.

A:No Icons, No Task Bar, and they take 2-4 minutes to load.

Since Safe Mode seems to be working normally, I'd run a Clean Boot troubleshooting procedure in order to isolate a possible offending application. Run it for both Services and Startup items.

A clean startup where nothing starts up except the bare essentials of windows.

If that was a Clean Boot, make sure you've followed the exact procedure.

Backstory (skip if you need)
I'm fixing someones laptop, It was slow and taking 30 minutes to startup, i did the usually virus scan and restarted, then it was stuck in an auto repair loop. I used a windows 8 Install CD from microscoft. None of the options in it would work, install (key doesnt match) reset (missing partition), image recovery (cant find an image), restore (no restore point), etc.

Used command prompt, did stuff like bootrec, bcdedit, diskpart, and chkdsk. After it ran chkdsk it finally loaded windows. I reset/reinstalled the OS completely. Fixed, restarted, running smooth. Owner said it was working great for a day, then after turning it back on it was in an auto repair loop.

Now
It's stuck in a preair loop, I can't even boot from the 8 CD! Have it configured in the bios, it shows the the blue windows logo then the screen goes black for 3 minutes and a blue screen flashes for 1 second saying  "Your PC ran into a problem and need to restart. Collecting some info (0% complete) search online for error: 0x000021a"

The weird thing is, Windows 7 disks boot fine, but it's "not compatible". And if I physically remove the HDD, it will boot into the windows 8 CD. So I put the HDD back in (while still at the command prompt) and it wont take my commands in related to the C: . I get a "System cannot find the drive specified"

I also tried hooking upp the HDD to my PC SATA, it shows in explorer, but just right clicking it crashes explorer.exe. D... Read more

A:Windows wont load, Boot CD wont load, Automatic Repair Loop

UPDATE:

I got a windows 8.1 disk made and it allowed me yo boot from the CD, but it's SLOOOOW, it takes minutes to load reset or w.e (none of them still work), or open the command prompt.

I ran chkdsk /f /r /x but it didnt help. chkdsk /r ends with:
"A disk read error occurredcc0000185
Insufficient disk space to fix the Usn Journal $J data stream."

Before when I ran it, I'm pretty sure it let me restart and booted into windows, not now.

Next I tried bootrec.
/fixmbr - succesful
/fixboot - succesfull
/rebuildBCD - Total identified Windows installations: 0
/scanOS - Total identified Windows installations: 0

Next bcdedit
Nothing worked "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found."

Next sfc /scannow
"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."
Then sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=c:\ /OFFWINDIR=d:\Windows
"Windows resources protection didnt find integrity violations"

BCDBoot c:\WindowsFailure when attempting to copy boot files

Next diskpart - but I forgot what I did before that may have worked. All i can remember is I had to select a disk or volume, and do something with it.

Hiya,

I am relatively new to these forums so bear with me!

I am in a predicament where I had a virus, spyware etc, my computer was pretty bogged down, having used spyware doctor and manually removed it all, i then ran a mcafee scan and it removed a couple of trojans.
As far as i can tell the computer is clean now! (only mcafee is running, spyware doctor was unistalled)

The problem with my start menu, on boot up it takes about 20 minutes to load and it is so slow i cannot even get far enough to the control panel as it just freezes.

I can open programs from task manager and they work fine. Everything is also hunkydory in safe mode.

Also if i try to run hijackthis, it scans about 3/4 and then stops giving me the server busy box switch to retry etc but this doesnt happen with any other programs!

I have tried temporary disabling various start up programs on boot from msconfig but that didnt work! starting to wonder if explorer.exe is corrupt!

Does anyone have any possible explanations? im tearing my hair out!

A:Can only load programs from task manager! help!

Maybe restart Explorer.exe.

Start up the Windows XP Task Manager and select the Applications tab.

Now select the New Task button at the bottom of the window. A new smaller window will appear. In it simply type:

explorer.exe

Thanks.

A:task manager,msconfig wont load

These symptoms have been linked to trojan behaviour.

If you can still nav the 'net, here's what you should do, to eliminate that possibility:

If you haven't already, download, install, update immediately, then run AdawareSE. Make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results.

Then download, install, update immediately Spybot S&D.

Have each fix whatever problems they may find.

Next, run an online virus scan at TrendMicro or RAV Antivirus.
Please select the autoclean option when using Trend Micro.

Then get HijackThis . This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Run the scan, save the log, but do not fix anything yet. Many files it finds are harmless, and required for your system to operate.

Post your log in a new thread in the HijackThis Log Help forum. This our dedicated spyware/virus forum. One of the expert analysts there will look over your log and assist you. Please include a brief description of the problem you are having and what you have done to fix it so far.

I have a computer with Windows 2000 Pro installed. When I turn it on, the boot sequence starts and appears to almost finish when the computer restarts and the boot process begins again. This loop continues until I flip the switch off. I can get the CMOS to come up but when I try to boot into "Safe Mode", the computer tries to boot up again. I do not have any of the disks that came with the computer but would be OK with a format of the C: drive if there is no fix. If that is the case, I would need to know how I can get a drive letter to appear on my screen.

I am not sure if the issue above is FF related or something to do with Windows 8.1? I am using FF29. Since installing this, everytime I exit, when I come back even if hours later, it says FF is already running, and I have to Task Manager kill it, any solution?

A:Firefox hangs on exit, wont load again unless END TASK

Hi Evokazz,
its a known bug in FF it has to do with your profile settings, (hidden).
Main fix appears to be a reset
Down arrow> help> troubleshooting see screenshot (Palemoon is a Firefox offshoot).
it will save most of your settings, and put an old file on your desktop.

I'm not sure if i should post here or on the Windows support, but i figured i'd start here since i definitely have a virus on my computer.

I cannot get my desktop to load and when i hit ctrl+alt+del i do not get my task manager. This happens in both normal and safe mode. I have tried booting to *last known working configuration* and it's the same. All i have is a black screen (i didn?t have a desktop background) with my mouse on it.

I have all my documents backed up and am planning to reformat my harddrive, but i don't have any of my installation disks here with me cause i'm studying abroad.

Is there anything i can do to make my computer at least functional until i get the disks i need?

Hey there,
Iím trying to run a repair on my friends Compaq Presario 1245 but I have a strange problem. Every time I boot into setup, it will load the setup files and then just try to start windows up. The setup program will boot from the CD, load the drivers and whatnot, but instead of going into the actual setup process (where you can install a clean copy, repair etc), it just tries to boot to Windows automatically (Which doesnít work).

I've tried it even with a Windows 2003 CD and the same thing happens. I have went and reset the bios to their factory settings just in case for a session but that doesn't seem to be the problem (the CMOS battery is dead anyways). I was told the CMOS battery being dead might be the problem but its never really been and issue for me before when Ive worked on laptops (with dead CMOS batteries)

Any help to this would be appreciated as my friend has a bunch of tuning maps for his car.

After doing the update, it was required to restart. After I restarted, my icons and toolbar appeared on my screen as normal. Then after a minute maybe, it disappeared. The only thing that would show up is my wallpaper. I tried right clicking, pressing the windows button on my keybard, and even restarting again a few times. It all came back to the same outcome. I tried finding posts on it but I didnt see one. I'm sorry if I did miss one. Could anyone give me some ideas as of what to do? it would really help.

OK,

My computer will not load desktop icons after boot up, it just hangs. It does boot all they way to my background. I DO have my task bar and start menu, however i can only use the run fuction in the start menu. I can also run task manager. I do get a few things loaded in the notification area (ie. where the clock is). I can run in safe mode with no problems at all, as a matter of fact im in safe mode with networking so i can use the internet. I read alot of other topics similar to mine and no have worked for me so far.
Things i have tried:

Boot from CD
Boot from recovery console
Combofix
Task manager, File, New task, "explorer.exe"
I dont think its a virus/trojan but i could be wrong. When my computer started messing up is when i adjusted a tcp/ip tweak called TCP Opimizer. Oh and im using windows XP, sp2.

I've viewed many posts here and elsewhere with similar symptoms and tried numerous fixes, but nothing works. Help me, Tech Support Guys, you're my only hope ...

A week ago Monday my Sony Vaio laptop with XP Home balked on bootup. No start button or taskbar, no icons and none of my automatic programs loaded. In Task Manager explorer.exe was missing. Starting it through New Task made the taskbar, buttons and icons appear for 10 seconds, then disappear. After a few such flashes, I was left with only my wallpaper. What's more, all of my System Restore points were gone, something I'd never knowingly allow. I also noticed in Task Manager that winlogon.exe uses 55 percent of my CPU but couldn't Google up a fix that worked for me. For the first couple of days I was able to get online, but not since the weekend, so I'm unable to use online scans.

Oh, and my laptop (1.73 CPU, 512 memory, BTW) didn't come with an XP CD. I was told by the salesman that it was in i386 for convenience. Sadly, several fixes require the CD, and I can see no way to navigate to the i386 folder. So much for convenience. The installation CD is in the mail from Sony. Meanwhile I'm seeing what I can do before having to reformat. My computer is vital to my work, so I can't just give up.

I remember doing routine maintenance with CCleaner and RegSupreme right before this happened, but both performed smoothly and neither has given me a problem in the past. I did play wi... Read more

So I've been trying EVERYTHING I can think of...My desktop won't load, its just a black screen with My Documents popped up. I am aware of the "run explorer.exe" trick, but when I do ctrl+alt+delete to get my task manager, but the option isn't even there. I have tried ctrl+shift+esc to make it pop up but that doesn't work either. I looked in my registry and went to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

There is no 'DisableTaskMgr' present in the registry. So it can't be that. I am able to boot in safe mode. This is when I try to run Malwarebytes Anti-Virus (and yes, I did rename the .exe so the virus can't get to it), it scans for about 10 seconds and immediately shuts down anyway. I then proceed to try chkdsk /f AND scr /scannow, and both of those have done nothing. They shut off after a few minutes without finishing their jobs. And theeeen I use ComboFix, but that just brings up the blue screen of death. I know it wasn't a smart thing to do, but I was kinda desperate. I have tried System Restore and Last Known Good Configuration, and guess what? Didn't work. This virus really doesn't want to leave...Could anyone please assist me? I'm beginning to lose hope.

I'll give you the background to this problem. I recently installed CCleaner and cleaned my registry. I also disabled rundll32.exe because I thought it was something bad. It was located on C:\WINNT\System32. And then since I had installed Firefox and Internet Explorer had a spyware or adware I removed it and had the option of rolling back to an earlier version. I had to restart my computer and when I did I got the message "explorer.exe has generated a problem and needs to close" "An error log has been created." I ran CCLeaner through Task Manager and enabled rundll.32 but that didn't help when I restarted. I am running a WIN 2000 that was downgraded from WIN XP because of hard drive failure. It is a different Hard Drive than before. Any other info just ask. Thanks for looking at my thread and hope someone can help.

And Safe Mode won't load up either and Last Known Good Configuration didn't solve the problem. And I don't have the Windows 2000 CD since the guy who fixed my computer installed it.

Can anyone help with this? The desktop icons take forever to load. They look like little squares, then they load. I have already clean installed windows XP, I've checked for spyware, adware, and viruses. I don't know what is causing this to happen.

A:Desktop Icons SLOOOOOW to load....

Could be many reasons for this..

Are you having any other problems with performance as well? i.e Data transfer rates, reading, writing problems?

Have you tried defragging your c drive and offline files?

You can download a free program called TuneXP which is absolutely amazing. You can use it to make quick and easy registry changes to improve general performance as well as benchmarking. It also has settings to make shutdown faster (without casuing data loss or corruption), you can use it to optimize pre-fetch and delete prefetch files (both improve boot times), you can defrag boot files which takes a lot of time of boots. Also has settings to increase NTFS performance and lots of other things....worth a go ;-)

I tried the following, and now the icons show right away, but then the screen blinks (for lack of a better word) and the icons show as 'white boxes' and then in a second or two they return to the regular (colored) icons. Anything else I can do to make the icons appear as fast as they did orginally and stay that way rather than turning "white" and then changing back to the regular colored icons?

Hello. I have been having this problem since yesterday for some unknown reason. Whenever I boot up my computer, in Normal mode, and I click on my or any other username, it takes at least 3 minutes to log in. Then, after it finally logs in, my taskbar nor my Desktop icons appear, but Explorer.exe is already loaded. This happens for all usernames, and I created a new one. I can load Task Manager, and I can load individual programs and files from there. If I kill Explorer.exe and then restart it, it still doesn't work. I have no Restore Points, by the way. I can go on Safe Mode, which is how I'm posting this. There is like a 10% chance that its a virus, but I highly doubt it due to the fact that im a computer "guru" and I maintain my computer well. Im guessing its just corrupted registry settings. Also, I cant run HijackThis in Normal nor in Safe Mode, and I tried reinstalling too.

Well there you have it...
Hopefully someone can help...

P.S.: I have a question. if I partition my hard drive, backup all my music and files, reinstall windows using the Recovery Console... will my partition still be there with all my music and stuff. Im almost positive it will still be there, I just want to verify.

Thank you for your time and patience :)

A:Taskbar or Desktop icons don't load for over 20+ min...

PILL5B3RRY,

There are many things that can cause this type of drastic slow-down. I would first try scanning your PC for malware/viruses:

Go to:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/showthread.php?t=15968

and follow the steps documented on this page.

Other possible problems:

- PC's "Turbo" or "Cache" mode has been disabled via a switch or in the BIOS setup causing the processor to run slow.

- HARD Drive controller(s) have been demoted from DMA (fast access) to PIO mode due to excessive errors in reading media (usually DVD or CD). Check out:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817472

http://winhlp.com/node/10

- Paging or virtual memory has been disabled or memory has been reduced.

- A buggy driver (usually video or hard disk) or hardware device has been installed that's causing conflicts and slowing the PC down.

- A rogue program or service is hogging all of the PC's CPU bandwidth and/or memory

I would start by scanning for viruses first. If you can recall any changes that happened prior to this problem - please reply with the details (new software, hardware, updates, settings, drivers, etc).

- John

Hi, and welcome to the forums it is possible that the shutdown corrupted your Icon cache to fix:-

Go to start, search and type cmd, right click on the returned cmd.exe and select "run as administrator" at the prompt copy paste each line below and press enter after each line, your desktop will go blank and your computer will restart.

Code:

We've now had three different Windows XP systems come in here for this problem so I wanted to see if anyone else was seeing this. It has happened with both Windows XP Home and Windows XP Media Center (based off Professional) systems. Two were Dells, one was a custom built one.

After installing a fresh copy of Windows and loading drivers, everything works fine. After doing the first batch of available Windows updates, the system reboots, but you cannot click anything on the Start menu, taskbar, etc. If you hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and open the task manager (either automatically as in XP Home, or by clicking Task Manager on the screen that comes up with MCE/Pro), you can then close the task manager, and everything runs appropriately. It doesn't matter how long the system sits there, this continues to happen until you go through that process.

I assumed we had a bad Windows image here at first, but after it started doing it with a whole different version, now I'm skeptical of one of the updates, and wanted to see if anyone was experiencing something similar.

A:Need to load Task Manager before Start menu will open

Hi

A few questions

Are they being brought to you with this problem or is it a problem that you are having with installs that you do?

Are you using the same mouse for all of these installs?
When I do installs for customers, I use an old mouse and keyboard on my bench (my KVM caused problems once so I stopped using it for this).

Where are you getting the copy of XP from and what updates are you referring to? Is it when you update to SP3 or something else?
