Desktop icon/font size on the laptop and the TV

Q: Desktop icon/font size on the laptop and the TV

I have connected my laptop to a 40" LCD TV using HDMI cable and everything works fine. Since the desktop icons/fonts on the TV shows default (small) size from the laptop, in order for me to see it from the distance I have to change the desktop icons/fonts to a larger size.

Here is my question; Is there a way to set up a different desktop icon/fonts size to match the TV and the laptop? (perhaps different profile settings???) Meaning, when I disconnect the HDMI cable from the TV, I want the size of the icons/fonts go back to default/small size icons and vice versa .

Hope this question makes sense.
Thanks in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I can't think of anything that exist within windows. It wasn't necessarily designed to be used on 40" LCD from 10' away in the way you are using it. That's why Windows Media Center's fonts are so much bigger.

Per this Topic here on 7F: dual monitor text is different sizes between screens you're out of luck.

Good day.

I wish to know if there is a way to change the font size/style (bold, etc.) of the icon labels ONLY on the desktop screen.

I've tried the Control Panel method (Appearance & Personalization -> Display) that allows me to change the fonts for 'ICONS'. However, this option also changes the appearance of fonts in the directories/filenames, which is not what I want.

E.g. Labels on the desktop with size 12 and bold. Fonts in folders: size 9 and UNbolded (default style).

Anyone have a solution for this?

Hi all, I just installed WIn8.1 Prox64 and I'm facing the following issue. I want to be able to adjust the desktop icons' spacing (vertical and horizontal), desktop icons font size, etc. In Windows 7 this was achieved by going to Personalization/Wndow Color/Advanced Appearance Settings and then you'd have a drop down menu with many items to be able to adjust. In Windows 8.1 it seems that this list is much more limited or impossible. Am I missing something or otherwise is there a 3rd party tweaker for this? Thanks

This was excellent with the RC version of win 7, I mean, it installed it all on its own, it was like it read my mind and knew that I was getting old and I was going to be happy with the font size.

Well, it all changed with the RYN version, I manually had to use the 125% dpi option, which worked well with the icon sizes but not so much with the font size withing the content window.

The size is awesome on this site but not so much on others and/or the software I use... see example.

I have also gone to the "Change Window Colors and Metrics" and sorted some other stuff but, I can't for the life of me, change the "Window Text" inside the "Active Window"... again, see image attached.

My problem is that at my 46 yrs of age, my eyesight is not that bad, hence the problem I am having. I mean, I can see 20/20 for most everything but, fine print within 1 is when all hell breaks loose and my computer is within 1 & 2 so its a toss up

Anyways, what else I can do?

A:Changing font size... not the icon

If changing the Display resolution isn't working (Control Panel - Appearance and Personalization - Display - Screen Resolution "Make text and other items larger or smaller") isn't doing it, Windows IE 8 has a tab in the lower right corner to jack up the resolution in the browser. For sites that have small text on parts of them, you can jump the resolution from 125% to 150, or better.

Here's another suggestion from Dwarf, in an earlier thread:

"Try this. Click Tools and Internet Options. On the General tab, under Appearance, click Accessibility. In the Formatting section, click to check (place a tick) the option Ignore font sizes specified on webpages and then click OK twice."

The text font in the Chrome tabs along the top of the screen is too hard to read - as is the address bar and icons. I've set my graphics dpi to a setting which is fine for all other apps and don't want to change it. The Chrome default text size has no effect, Google has not acted on feedback and I can't find a solution by Googling the issue.

Is there a way of increasing the size of the tab text and icons? I'm surprised how poor the Chrome UI is given the cash Google has for development.

I can change a lot of things using the appearances tabs, but I can't change the Desktop Font Size.

The "normal" way to do this that Win7 provides is to change the DPI from 100% to 125, 150 or custom. HOWEVER, doing that causes some programs to not work correctly. For instance Titan Quest, and I've heard in comments on gaming forums that other games sometimes have the same problem. Changing DPI in Win7 causes the cursors to not work properly in many full-screen games and apps. Changing DPI back to 100% requires a reboot, which is a pain.

SO... Is there any way, some registry tweak, perhaps, that will allow me to change the desktop font to a larger size?

Right now, I'm having to resort to switching back and forth from 800x600 screen resolution when I can't read some things. On a widescreen monitor, that's a shameful waste of monitor space. It seems there should be an easier way to do this.

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help with this problem. A short history:

In July I acquired the TDSS trojan from some site link. I removed it using MBAM, Windows Malicious Software Removal and Zonealarm Extreme Security.

My system is now clean as far as I know.

I then enabled automatic updates from Microsoft and downloaded and installed everything including SP3.

Thereafter when I start up Windows, my icon fonts look fine - default setting for Windows Standard, but the task bar fonts are sometimes too large. When this happens, if I then click on a programme icon those fonts also grow very large - to probably 14 points, then the rest of the desktop, menus, titles, etc. all follow suit.

If I restart Windows this problem usually goes away until the next or second-next time that I start up - ocassionally, like today, it doesn't.

I have followed advice to change font settings and sizes, even the font type, then after restarting have reset to the default and everything is OK for a few starts, then the problem recurs.

I've searched the web for advice but can't find any relevant to my search terms, other than strong advice to remove SP3, which I did, then installed all the security updates - except a few which will not install (inf files missing).

I had other reasons to uninstall SP3, relating to monitor colour not being reliable and associated problems.

I have no real desire to reinstall everything as that is a real pain and would appreciate any advice if available.

hi

i has just recently downloaded a game that required fullscreen. After i deleted the game, all my desktop settings were messed up. First, i couldnt see my start bar. Now I can after restarting, but the text size of everything was larger than usual. Even when you would open a window, the area where the close, minimize and maximize buttons (that bar) had large text. I went to my properties and changed my desktop theme. Now everything is extremely small. The area that says "file , edit, etc." is extremely small, however the interent font size is alright. Could anyone suggest any ideas on how to fix this problem?

thanks!

You could also try a system restore to before your game changed any settings.

This keeps text and other items at normal size.Medium - 125%. This sets text and other items to 125% of normal size.Larger - 150%. This sets text and other items to 150% of normal size. This option appears only if your monitor supports a resolution of at least 1200 x 900 pixels.Click Apply. To see the change, close all of your programs and then log off of Windows. Hi,
This view size is controlled by HKU specific user registry. Thus it can't be mapping to another user account.
If you insist, there is a complex workaround(However I wouldn't like to recommend you use this method):
Copy the following registry value to place another user's registry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
Note: It can't be imported, just copy its value.

Hi, This is my first post. I recently was given a new Dell 15R touchscreen computer and it was upgraded to Windows 8.1. I've only used Windows XP up until 3 days ago. I am a novice user.

I liked the way the desktop icons looked in XP, the shortcuts for Netflix and Ikea were a nice big red box with an N in it for Netflix, a yellow and blue box for Ikea . They were medium sized, about 1/2" big, but I could recognize them easily and quickly because of the individual graphics.

Now with Windows 8.1, the shortcut icons are a 1/2" white square and a very teeny tiny logo in the center that I can barely see and have confused with other similar icons. I have found where to change the icon size and text size but not the icon appearance. Where would I find this? I have right clicked on the desktop, I've looked in the control panel, I've checked display.

8.1 is a heck of a learning curve for me and I am enjoying learning the new system but I would like to be able to quickly and easily see what I put on my desktop.

Thank you for any and all help. I appreciate it.

I am trying to find the registry key that will change the desktop icon size to small.

This is mainly for new users, or for the default user. I have workstations that have several people sharing them and need this for everyone.

I have looked in these locations:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Desktop\IconSize
And
HKey_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\Shell Icon Size

I played with both these settings for myself, and the desktop icons do not change.

If I reboot, the first key value goes back to 32, and the second key stays at 96.
But my icons never change in size.

I am looking for any way to do this in the registry.

I could try copying the ntuser.dat but fear I will still have issues with paths, and other defaults that will cause the same problem I had originally.

It's 4 meters away from my armchair and my eyes aren't so good any more so I increased the icon text size to 150%.
that was fine except the one other Program I use regularly, which has a fixed windows size is now too big for the screen.

I only wanted the text size altered. Why is this happening?

PC is win 7 and I altered the text size from control panel/display BTW

thanks

Mike

A:resizing desktop icon text seems to change the size of program windows

Im no expert on this but i thought if increasing above 100% you may need to reduce screen resolution to still fit display window

Although im not sure what that would look like on a big tv ?

I have huge icons on my desktop and I cannot re-size them. I like them quite small for a Laptop with its limited screen size.
I have put the comp into Windows Classic mode and tried to re-size under 'Appearance Settings' - Advanced - Icon.
After 'Apply' I get the 'Please Wait' - but there is never a change.

Can someone help - please?

Does anyone know how to change the font size permanently?

A:Changing default font and font size on hotmail

You may use your personal e-mail signature to choose default font in windows live hotmail...

In the options menu, select "more options" and then "personal e-mail signature". Choose the desired font style, size and color and type the phrase "text here". Save changes.

Now all you have to do, when writing a new message or a reply is highlight the phrase "text here" and start typing. It's that simple!
