Power settings show Do nothing, but ThinkPad still goes to sleep when lid is closed.

Q: Power settings show Do nothing, but ThinkPad still goes to sleep when lid is closed.

Using a IBM Thinkpad connected to a 32in TV as a Monitor. The power settings already show that Do Nothing is already selected for both lugged in and battery, however when the lid is closed, it still goes to sleep. It feels like there is a simple fix but
I can think of one. Any help?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After adjusting some of the power settings to suit my preferences, I've encountered a wierd issue with my laptop. I set it so that closing the lid does nothing, because I don't like having to re-enter my passcode every time the lid gets shut for a quick second. However, I also set it so that the computer should go to sleep after an hour unattended (when plugged in) or ten minutes (when not plugged in), as to preserve the battery. Screenshots of these settings are included below for reference. My problem is that my computer does not go to sleep when left unplugged with the lid closed. Instead, it sits and burns the battery until it's almost dead. Sometimes I come home after my laptop has been sitting out for hours without being plugged in, and I hear the speaker chiming with the low-battery notification. When I open the lid, the computer is wide awake like I never left. I thought my settings should make it go to sleep after some time, whether or not the lid is open, whether or not it's plugged in. But this is clearly not happening when it should. Is there an additional setting I don't know about?  Is it possible that notifications from facebook or my anti-virus are preventing the computer from falling asleep? Thanks for your help.

Hello All,

In the last two weeks I have been experiencing something very strange with my Windows 10 Pro. When my laptop resumes from sleep the Wireless is turned off in Windows. I don't believe it was an update because I have defer updates enabled. Unfortunately, I just noticed System Restore was turned off.

1) I have checked the power settings in Device Manager and the device is NOT checked to use power management)
2) I have updated to the latest wireless driver available.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: I believe this issue has something specifically to do with Sleep because when I reboot or shutdown/power-on the Wireless is enabled and working fine. It only seems to be when Windows goes into sleep mode.

A:Wireless turned off after lid closed or sleep (Not Power Management)

It is common behavior for any devices to be powered down if you close the lid to place into sleep mode.

My Yoga 920 seems to ranomly wake from sleep when the lid is closed. I'd had several occasions when travelling to find my latop completely dead when I needed it - or finding it burning up in the confines of my bag. A few times, I've been alerted to problem when I happen to hear my laptop make a notification sound. When this happens, the screen is already on when I open the lid and much of the bettery has been used. I've seen this occur both in and out of my bag. Nothing is plug into the laptop other then the dummy USB holder for the pen. I have Vantage installed and all updates have been applied.

Two related issues: 1) With "Turn off the display" set to never and "Put the computer to sleep" is set for a number of minutes, the computer does not sleep after the time set and the display stays on. 2) With "Turn off the display" set to a number of minutes while sleep time is set to a longer time or never, the display turns off at the set time. However, it appears the computer immediately goes to sleep at the display off time, as the display turns off the sleep and power lights start blinking. How can I tell tell whether the computer is really sleeping at that moment or whether just the display is off?

While I like most things about my Yoga 14 notebook, it has this annoying habit of going to sleep about 1 minute, even when it's plugged into a OneLink+ docking station.   I have the OS updated to the latest Windows 10 Creator's Edition and all device drivers up-to-date.   It's done this since I bought the machine earlier this year and I haven't been able to figure-out how to get it to honor the sleep settings in Windows.   Is there a BIOS setting or something that is forcing it to go to sleep after 1 minute?

My X1 Tablet wil no longer react to the power button, meaning I cannot press it to put the tablet to sleep. I've checked all the usual settings in win10 (power and sleep) and it's set to make my tablet sleep no matter which button is pressed. What's worse, if I put the tablet to sleep from the start button, then the power button cannot wake it up. However, if the tablet is powered off, the power button works fine, so it seems to be a software issue. I've all the various firmwares, windows 10 is up to date as of today and the BIOS settings doesn't seem to have any options for this. Has anyone else experienced this and did you find a solution?

I've set everything for "Never", but it's still turning off automatically after less than 5 minutes when not plugged in. Any help?

Hey guys

basically, if i have a video going, the computer will stay on, but if i have an app running, game, or i go idle from the pc, it will go to sleep after so and so minutes

I have told it not to sleep in high performance settings, i have display and sleep to never, and in advanced i have hard disk to never, and sleep to never

I cant figure out what keeps resetting it

I did notice that after it sleeps, the power options have been reset to turn display off after 15 minutes, seems to constantly reset by something

I think you can check the 'Advanced Settings' in the power management. There is a options sleep/hibernate.

Hi,  An old S430 is having issues after it goes to sleep, hibernate or even turn off. The red led wil blink and fan will start, then turn off. And repeat. Shut-down has to be forced pressing the power button for 10 seconds and after that it will boot without any problem. The issue doesn't present if you restart the device. I tried updating drivers, BIOS, disabling and enabling a lot of different devices, disabling fast start-up, checking Windows from issues with /scannow and even reinstalling Windows from scratch. Always the same with no change. There isn't any special system event logged. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

With in Advanced Power settings you can have Sleep enabled to what ever time you choose and you can select Hard Drives to Turn off Never.
I was wondering if selecting a Sleep option overrides setting the Hard Drives to never turn off? Maybe a silly question?
It seems that the system enters into full Sleep and perhaps it makes not since to have the hard drives On since there is nothing to access them. However, it is an SSD issue that I am trying to fine tune.
Now that I am typing this out it occurs to me that this Hard Drive setting is all hard drives in a system?
Does anyone know via registry or some other method to select only one Hard Drive to Never Turn Off?

Thanks. Hope I am being clear.

A:Advanced Power Settings - Sleep and Hard Drive Never Off?

What happens when entering the sleep mode is the drives will be turned off and the present state will be kept in memory until awakened. While the system is active the power scheme will prevent the drives from idling down after so many minutes with the never turn off setting applied.

With the turn off drives after the default 20minutes of inactivity that doesn't mean all drives turn off at the exact same time. I've never come across any reference for changing the power plan option for individual drives. But I can point you at the guide for the power plan settings with one instruction on drive settings to apply prior to entering the sleep mode. Power Plan Settings - Change

I am using a new Dell laptop with I5 processor and Windows 8.1.  My problem is that I cannot find out how to prevent the screen from blanking after 10 minutes of no keyboard entry.  This is happening to the secondary monitor on an extended desktop setup.  The primary monitor (built in display) stays up but the secondary will go black.  Anybody got an idea of what is going on?
Just thought that when I'm just running the built in display, the screen will blank shortly even though the power settings are set to 3 hours to dim and never to blank the display.
Maybe it's the screen saver.  I need to check that!

I have the same problem with my Lenovo T510 and my new P70.   I setted the sleep mode and hibernate mode to "never" in the Power Management and even use : Performance setting and my P70 always go the sleep mode after 4-5 minutes if the computer is idle. I was able to avoid the problem with my T510 by pausing a video.  That avoid the computer to do in sleep mode (yes the workaround is stupid.. but it works). But that stupid workaround doesn't work with the P70.  If I let my computer without touching it, it will go in sleep mode.  Don't download anything while going to the bathroom. PS.  I have Windows 10 on both my computers. I asked the same question on Microsoft Windows 10 forums and got an answer that reset all the setting to the default value, but that didn't fix the issue.  And now that I have the same problems with two lenovo laptop, I'm not sure that the problem is only with Windows and more with Lenovo drivers.

The way I know my desktop PC has gone to sleep is that the blue light around the power button flashes (instead of being on all the time). I'm playing around with some settings right now to find out exactly what is pulling it out of its sleep.
I realized that if I go to Power Options and change the plan settings for the recommended Balanced Plan, and DISABLE wake timers, then my computer DOES stay asleep.

HOWEVER, I also noticed that I can only put my PC to sleep MANUALLY. by using Sleep Mode using the Windows Power Button. If I instead use the following "automatically sleep after..." (in this case 1 minute), it doesn't go to sleep. Why is that?

And finally, question about the following. These are the settings for my Intel 82579V Gigabit Network Connection, There is a section called "Wake on LAN". Could someone explain to me what the three items mean? (What are magic packets and pattern matches?)... in plain english language please! I'm trying to figure out if these need to be adjusted.

A:Confusion about Sleep Settings and Power Saver Options

this should be simple English because that all I can speak .
lan is a local area network, used In a business setting for the most part ,iam sure some guys have them at home! so wake on lan means the computer can be awaken by the company IT guy from his computer using a magic packet ,what ever that is ?,or something like that ,so you /me can disable that feature ,
magic packet ,info from my best friend on the internet .

I wanted to change my power and sleep settings for my display.

At first it didn't seem to work. Working through it methodically however, I found there are FOUR places that can be set for the same thing!

(1) Win10 Start/Settings/Display/Power&Sleep. I set it to never

(2) Below that in Additional Power Settings I was taken to the Control Panel. Checking the Preferred Plan settings the screen setting didn't reflect the change above.

(3) From the CP is another option: 'when to turn off display'

(4) Finally there are the "advanced power settings".

This is ridiculous. Surely all I need set is the initial (1) Settings? And this doesn't even include setting the Screen Saver which seems to be over-ridden by the other settings!

Obviously Microsoft have got their knickers in a bit of twist with some settings undertaken in Settings and others still in CP.

A:Build 10547 confusing power&sleep settings

OK so I have a number of problems with the fifteen or so ThinkPad Yoga 12 devices we have purchased. Some of these problems are being addressed in other threads (the black screen on start up which requires you swipe the screen in Windows 10 release 2 being one of them), but I'll just start with one problem for now to keep things clear. On my desk I have a ThinkPad Yoga 12. I have a ThinkPad UltraDock Pro USB 3.0 docking station, the newest revision. Connected are an external mouse and keyboard, a LAN cable, and 2 external monitors. The Yoga 12 is connected via the USB 3 cable, and the lid is closed. Both screens are up, LAN and input devices working, everything seems good. Every so often, the mouse cursor will magically jump to the bottom-right of the left external monitor and a left-click event is registered causing the Windows calendar to pop up. Happens maybe twice an hour. All devices are running clean Windows 10 1511 builds, fully patched. Also running ThinkPad System Update to get all latest drivers and latest BIOS revision. Latest DisplayLink driver is applied. Problem persists across all devices. How do we stop the ghost clicks from happening? The issue is driving my users crazy. The docking station specifically listed compatability with the Yoga 12 model so I don't see why there should be a problem. I've heard reports the situation is improved if the lid of the Yoga 12 is left open, but we lose deskspace this way and my users tell me this isn't a ... Read more

Hi, welcome to the forums.
Can you please post the full model number of you computer?
Just some guessing.
Guess 1: I noticed there was some other discussion about "Ghost Clicks" on this forums. Can you check if those clicks are made by the touch screen? Does it shows the Windows animation like someone is touching the screen?
Just in case can you post your full model number and the hardwareID of your monitor.
Also take a look at this article: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/yoga-series/yoga-3-1470/documents/ht1...
Guess 2: There was a driver update for Synaptics that shuts down the trackpoint when you close the lid. Can you check if your computer has a Synaptics trackpoint/touchpad. Check out the version of the driver.
...this are only wild guesses according to what I had read on this forums. But if you tell me that you don't have those problems if you disconnect the Ultradock Pro USB 3.0, maybe the issue is somewhere else.

HiI'm using a HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j198ez Notebook PC running Windows 10 64bit.I have an external display, and it's the only display I need, hence, the laptop lid is always closed. The peripherals I use are:Microsoft Designer Mouse/Keyboard Wireless Kit - BluetoothWacom Intuos 4 Tablet - USBLogitech Rumblepad 2 Game Controlle - USB None of the above mentioned peripherals wake the laptop from sleep. And I am forced to open the lid everytime I need to use the laptop. Previously I was using a Logitech USB keyboard and a Logitech Wireless Mouse (wth USB dongle) - both were able to wake the laptop from sleep with no problem. Gave up on them because I needed the extra USB slots. I also have a Bluetooth speaker set, which led me to belive that the bluetooth connection of the laptop is closing whenever the laptop is going into sleep, since it starts searching for other devices to pair with. This would explain why the mouse and keyboard can't wake the laptop, even though I have checked the "Allow this device to wake computer from sleep" boxes, for both, in the Device Manager dialogue. Any solutions for this?I would also be happy if the tablet or gamepad would wake the laptop. But the "Allow this device to wake computer from sleep" check boxes are greyed out for these devices. Thanks in advance.

Did you install Update KB976902 at the same time as other updates?

I have an odd problem. I've noticed that when I close my XPS 13, it shuts down (as indicated by the annoying front LED) but then later on it will start back up while it's being transported. Sometimes I'll get home, take it out of the computer case, and it will be as hot as a thermal missile because it's been running.
I'm not sure why it would just randomly start up like that? I have the power options to "sleep" when lid is closed, as seen here: http://i.imgur.com/p0x1C86.png.
I don't believe I have malware because I have reset my computer to factory settings on multiple occasions and scanned with SpyBot and Windows Defender.
In Bios "Wake on LAN" is Disabled.
For the life of me I can't think what would be triggering this besides the NSA (I joke). Does this happen to anyone else? Did you find a fix for it? Was it a dell program? Or is there a faulty piece of hardware on this computer?
Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Hi, Sometimes when I close the lid off my Yoga 260 Windows 10 are not going to sleep. The behaviour is really weird because the red light on the lid is blinking like when it's in sleep mode, but I can hear the rotating fan. When I open the lid it's even weirder. This never happened with windows 7 and i've triesd programs like insomnia which haven't helped at all. Id really love to get to the bottom of this, otherwise I might have to reluctantly revert to windows 7

Anyone offering ideas would be much appreciated. Cheers

A:Unwanted sleep when laptop is closed

Hi safety1g,

FYI, I have seen this behavior before on a few Sony Vaio models, and each time it was referred back to Sony support, where they said the option to "change what the lid does when closed" is/was not supported in their power management scheme and there was no workaround for this issue. So, just consider this an FYI at this point; however, if you can't get your issue resolved quicky, I would spend 10 minutes on the phone with your laptop's manufacturing support group to see if they can confirm a similar issue.

Good luck,

Hello, I just received an Alienware R2.  I cannot get it to wake up from sleep mode when the lid is closed with my USB keyboard or mouse.  It does wake up from sleep mode with my USB keyboard when the lid is open.  I just updated the bios to Version A05,A05.  Before I updated the new bios, it wouldn't even wake up from sleep mode by hitting the laptop keyboard.  I had to hit the power switch.
I also have updated the video drives to Version,A04 (Intel HD) and Version,A02 (nVIDIA Geforce).
I am guessing this is still a BIOS problem, but is there a fix?

Sometimes, maybe around half the time (I haven't counted), my laptop doesn't go to sleep when the lid is closed.  The fan keeps running and the Thinkpad logo red light stays on.  I know that the computer "registers" the lid closing, because the screen turns off and I get logged out.  This is very inconvenient because every time I close my laptop, I have to wait a minute to see if it properly went to sleep.  If this problem does occur, opening and closing the lid once more seems to put it to sleep.  I thought maybe it just took some time for the laptop to go to sleep, but my laptop was in my backpack today for a couple hours, logo light on and fan running and of course quite warm.  Did some searching but couldn't find a solution.  Is there a fix for this?  Thanks.

first time here, I have about a week experience (pulled out some hair) with windows 8/8.1, but I consider myself pretty comfortable with Windows in general.

When my win8.1 laptop is in sleep mode, I can wake it with a mere touch of my external bluetooth k/b without any issues, as long as the lid is opened. If I close the lid, I can continue to use it as its connected to a big Samsung plasma tv. But if I let the laptop go to sleep (or put it to sleep myself thru the menu), I am unable to wake it back; I need to pull it out from a/v furniture, open the lid and press the power button.

Is this a win8 thing, an Acer Aspire thing, or worse it can't be done?
Anyone else able to wake from sleep their win8 laptop w/closed lid???

A:Waking laptop from sleep with lid closed

Try going into the power options and set the option for what to do when the lid is closed to "do nothing".

Hi All
This is my first time on any forum so forgive me if I have gone to the wrong place. I have had the common problem of broken hinges on my L50 B. I have replaced both hinges and to all intent and purpose ever thing went well, i.e. the lid opens and closes great now. I have however done something wrong, the laptop now doesn't sleep when I close the lid. I have checked all the power settings and the advanced settings and they are set to sleep when lid is closed. Has anyone any idea what I may have done wrong. Can anyone tell me what the motherboard connection of the lid sensor switch looks like? Any help gratefully received.

There seem to be two times this happens. I close my laptop lid (set to sleep when closed) and then when I reopen it, it restarts and then tells me there was a blue screen. When I click on the option to look for solutions online, the pop-up window just closes and disappears. Other times it has happened when my computer was idle for a while, lid open (presumably it went to sleep), then returned to it and power button illuminated, but black screen. Nothing to do but power off - or if I close the lid for a while, it will then restart when reopened.
Seems totally random. Sometimes doesn't happen for days in a row, then twice a day.
Thanks for your help. Sorry I'm not super tech savvy.

Welcome aboard, anahata.

Your problem seems to be with your usb port/hub. Is there anything connected in the laptop's USB ports when you close the lid? Say any external HDD or something else? If so, remove those, close the lid and follow if it crashas again.

Turn USB selective suspense on to narrow down the possibility to discriminate if it is being cause by the hardware, or the USB hub driver.
USB Selective Suspend - Turn On or Off

At the same time, try to upgrade your NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Driver, using the link provided in the page: Driver Reference Table - nusb3hub.sys.

I purchased my Hp envy 360 laptop at Best Buy about a week ago. It was an open box purchase because It was in near perfect condition . I tryed charging it but it only charges when it is in sleep mode or either closed . When I plug it in while its in it has a white light and the battery days plugged in ; not charging . But when I close it there is a orange light and a couple hours later it's fully charged . I assumed I had a bad battery but I ran a battery test and it said my battery was fine . Because it charges when it's closed I assumed their was a setting I could just switch but i don't know what to do .
