Windows Explorer keeps crashing and restarting

Q: Windows Explorer keeps crashing and restarting

Hi everyone, Forgive me if this has been covered, I did some searching and came up with something very similar here but the difference with my laptop is I do not remember having any specific malware or virus. My IE windows crash randomly & restart and none of my freeware programs seem to be able to find a fault. It's getting really bad now to a point where it tries starting more than twice and gives up. I'm far from an IT expert and found some good advice on here so I really hope you guys can help me. I've ran the scans from the link above, hopefully this is helpful. Thanks in advance,Jamie Results of screen317's Security Check version 0.99.79  Windows 7 Service Pack 1 x86 (UAC is enabled)  Internet Explorer 11 ``````````````Antivirus/Firewall Check:`````````````` Windows Firewall Enabled! avast! I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Is it Windows Explorer crashing or is it Internet Explorer?  Your post is a bit confusing as the title states Windows Explorer but in the text it states IE.

Sony Vaio SZ680, Vista Business 32bit, 2.4GHz.

I am constantly getting a popup box saying 'Windows Explorer has stopped working, Windows is checking for a solution to the problem' then a second box pops up and says 'Windows Explorer is restarting'. Explorer restarts itself (my taskbar closes and then opens a few seconds later and all my Explorer windows close) and everything is fine. If I open Windows Explorer again it's fine, but when I close out of Control Panel or my Users folder the error message appears and the loop begins again. When I leave a window open for an undefined period of time, it also resets itself as described above.

I've done a lot of searching online and many people have similar problems and blame Malware in their system. I've run multiple scans with the AVG spyware and virus programs and found nothing. I've also read through the Microsoft forums and it seems to be the same. This is my last resort - I cannot think of anything else to do to solve this problem!

Please, please help. I am so frustrated, and concerned that there is a deeper issue that Virus scanners can't find. I cannot remember the exact date and time when it began but my laptop is only a week old and the problem has been getting steadily worse.

First problem is you are using AVG! Get a real antivirus program. I recomend Synantec AV.
Next go download all Vista Updates. Vista is still buggy and there are a few updates that are realy needed.
Next go download Spybot Search and destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html
Update it and imunize and then run the scan. Clean anything that you find. Also Skype is known to cause issue with Vista, suposedly Microsoft is working on it!

Let me know if any of this helps

Hi All,

My Windows explorer is constantly crashing and restarting...it usually lasts say a min or so before it dies.

I've tried to search online and ran the cmd sfc/scannow and when complete, the message reads "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them".

I have also tried fixing via the action centre to no avail.

The detailed error message is as follows:

If I understand correctly with one user account you have problems, with another there are no problems. If this is the case, set up a new user account and delete the old.

Hi everyone,
I hope you can help.
I?ve HP 2000, win 7 hp x64, AMD E-350, 1.60 GHz, 4GB (3.6), bought 3- 4 years ago, and Windows Explorer seems to crash randomly with me, even in Safe Mode. Besides CPU usages gets really high, without no obvious reason, and MalwareByte blocks scvhost.exe.
To make it short!
I?ve scanned it with numerous tools, cleaned and fixed everything. To rule out all possibilities i could think of. I?ve also updated my windows and removed all programs they weren?t on it in last 2 years, reset browsers? Besides I was lucky and got a help of an expert on one of the forums. When last two logs came clean I thought the problem is solved, but ? I?ve shut it down normally, and this morning, as I?ve turned it on, begins again. First thing after booting and I couldn?t open anything, except firefox and task manager. Everything else I?ve touched, left or right clicks no matter, caused explorer to restart. I try opening skype through task manager, but it crashed, so I?ve opened it downloading and installing new one, using same method I?ve run few anti-adware-malware-etc,and later on again sfc /scannow, and everything was ok?. Now, I can open most of documents and applications, but for how long ?

Here are dump files created by explorer, I've found in users/../appdata/local, there is nothing in C:/windows/minidump could someone please look at them, and give me some advice.

Thank you in advance!

Does the PC still have the factory install? If so that is the worst possible install of Win7 one can have, larded with bloatware and duplicate utilities which interfere with better versions built into Win7. That's why most tech enthusiasts won't even run such an install but instead Clean Reinstall Windows 7

Everything needed is in the blue link to get and keep a perfect install just like a million+ others have done without a single complaint.

Until then you can establish a Clean Boot, replace any bloated AV with a free lightweight AV, run a full scan with that and also Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware, run System File Checker, utilize System resources - all from Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

I keep getting a box popping up "Windows Explorer has stopped working" and I can't do anything but restart the program, problem is when I do so the problem comes back up almost instantly. I've run SFC which found no issues, virus scan got nothing and system restore didn't help.

The problem is not present when starting in safe mode.

Any help would be much apreciated!

If it is happening even in safe mode, this would usually indicate a problem with the actual os itself.

Try the following:
SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Repair Install

Hi all,

I have been having issues with my windows explorer. I have a HP Dv7 Pavillon running Windows 7 64 bit. The issue appeared to be my windows explorer would crash and restart when i ran my mouse cursor over the shortcut icons on the screen quickly; I'd even sometimes experience the same crashes from running my mouse cursor over the task bar or when clicking a program from Windows start.

I tried to idenitfy the problem first by starting Windows in safe mode to test if the problem still occured; it did but not as easily as in normal mode and not without some real prompting after a while.I then reverted back to normal mode, and called up msconfig to attempt to check it by doing the following:

- From the general tab I clicked the Selective startup option and cleared the Load startup items check box, then
- From the Services tab, I selected the “Hide all Microsoft services” check box, and then clicked Disable all.

I then restarted my computer to see whether Windows Explorer keeps crashing or not, to identify if it may have been anything recently installed or added to the computer, since if it was, removing the incompatible ones would stop the Windows Explorer from crashing suddenly. Unfortunately however it still did. I considered at this point that it could be a shell extension problem, broken registry entry(ies), corrupt or missing drivers or even a possible malware or virus. Also whether as a result of 3rd party installations, partic... Read more

Alright, well, this is how it happened; I saw a video of someone I subscribed to on YouTube, and he posted a video about a 'God Mode' folder, and it was real, except he forgot to put '32 bit only'.., so what it was was you had to made a new empty folder on your desktop, and rename it something like 'GodMode.{J74H37858G83E453E4G74C}' but right after I did, the folder disappeared, and Windows Explorer kept restarting about every 5-10 seconds, and I was just lucky I had another user on this computer which does still work. But I really need that first account back (it was the administrator account). So yeah, any thoughts on this would be helpful.

*Also, I forgot to note that Safe Mode doesn't work either; the screen just keeps flashing black every 5-10 seconds, which is obviously still the Windows Explorer.

Hello,

My Windows Explorer keeps crashing and restarting. When I checked the Event Log, it has apparently been doing this randomly since I had the software installed (replacing my Windows XP) 10 months ago. However, it is happening more frequently now. For the most part, the errors all refer to a 'timeout' when waiting for a response from different services. Latest error:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the SftService service.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello, on startup, my windows explorer crashes. A dialog box appears saying that Windows Explorer crashed and its restarting. This keeps on looping for a long period of time with no result. I've tried CHKDSK and repaired whatever might be wrong but still doesn't help my problem. I've done sfc /scannow and it still doesn't fix the problem. It seems to work fine in Safe Mode. I am running Windows 7 on my Macbook Pro.

Thank you.

Hello captain19,Welcome to the forum. Please refrain from doing any fix or making any changes to the system from now on until we are done unless you decide you can do the rest on your own. Thank you. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.

I recently bought a brand new Asus laptop.
I've been using it for 2 weeks now, and the whole time my Windows Explorer (Note it is not IE web browser as always mistaken) has been crashing on me every once in a while (as many as 3 times in 2 hours). I wanted to system reset thinking it might have been a program I installed recently. Found out that the restore partition is corrupted. Tried a system restore back to when I first got it, and the same thing continues.

Also, are these problems normal?:
1) I find the processor way too slow to its capability. My 5-YEAR-OLD desktop at home with a Core 2 Quad 4GB RAM still loads things significantly faster than my BRAND NEW i5 4GB RAM laptop.

2) Keyboard isn't as responsive as any other laptop I've tried before too. Sometimes when I type fast, it misses some key presses (which I clearly know I've pressed correctly).

I called Asus customer service as well and they asked me to bring it in for possible repairs (It's still under warranty), but I cannot afford to lose my laptop for even a few days due to needing it at work.

It still works fine for the moment, albeit the annoying once-in-a-while WinExplorer restart.

Is there a way to get a system reset without the recovery partition? Like from a 3rd party source?

TIA.

A:Windows Explorer keeps crashing/restarting (Win7x64 SP1)

If I where you I would bring it back to the store for a return or extange. If your having alot of problems with Windows/Proccessor/Keyboard its best just to get a new one. (As long as its still under Warrenty/extange programs)

Also this is just my opinion but when it comes to restoring/recover Windows a third party source isnt your best option.

I am running windows 7 home premium 64bit on a Sager 5170 that I very recently bought. On the 11th I installed a new windows automated update and restarted. Since then my windows explorer has been cycling through stopping and restarting every ten seconds or so or whenever I attempt t run any windows program. Firefox is still working, though (I am using it to submit this). When I try to run a system restore I receive an error about a corrupt file in the restore image (or something along those lines) regardless of which restore point I choose (I only have three and one is the update that started the problem) and running a disk check/repair has failed to solve the problem.

The computer can start in safe mode but the issue persist there as well. I can open task manager but again, trying to run any windows program results in explorer crashing and restarting.

I do not have a installation disk as the computer came preloaded with windows and I had yet to create a backup image for the computer so reinstalling could pose a problem.

Please help.

EDIT: After restarting a large number of times, the explorer finally gave me this message:

"The instruction at 0xfe250294 referenced memory at 0x753d0000. The memory could not be read.

Hi everyone,

My issue is that Windows Explorer continually crashes and restarts when I log in to my profile. It will load most icons up but then windows explorer will start crashing and restarting. I was joining files together using File Splitter and Joiner and after it joined them together, it began to crash/restart. The file that I joined (mkv file) works and plays fine but when I try to delete it, it will just prepare for ages. It just displays calculating for time/items remaining and speed (i guess I have two problems which i think are interrelated). One is I can't deleted the joined file and perhaps windows explorer does not like this joined file hence crashing. (i have previously joined files and this error never occured)

Things I've tried
- starting in safe mode (windows explorer does not crash)
- tried deleting in safe mode (calculating forever)
- have tried sfc /scannow in safe mode (no error messages)
- scanned with avg command line scanner in safe mode (i dont think there were any problems, i fell asleep before the scan finished)
- attempted to play around with msconfig, I disabled all non microsoft services, still crashed
- tried deleting a registry key related to .mkv files
- unable to move/rename the file or access its properties

Windows 7 is
- x86 (32bit)
- the original installed OS on the system

A day or so ago, my IE browser got redirected to a website, which made my Norton program start detecting viruses, trojans, and intrusion attempts left and right for a few minutes. According to Norton, all of these were blocked, quarrantined, etc... The next day, Most of the icons from my system tray were gone, and after a minute or so online, multiple windows would start popping up in my taskbar, but I can't find out what they are. Whenever I'd hover over the area (taskbar or systray) with the mouse, Windows Explorer would give me "Windows Explorer has stopped working" folowed by "Windows explorer is restarting".

I ran virus scans with Norton, Spybot, Malwarebytes, Kapersky, the list goes on. Some of the programs would find trojans and fix/remove them, but I'm still having the issues with Windows Explorer, the missing system tray icons, and the mystery windows in my taskbar. My last set of scans, online and on my software came back clean... But the problem goes on. I do have my system recovery dvd, But I haven't backed up any files... (Terrible, I know)

I've noticed that task manager does not show any svchost.exe processes running - I don't know if that's normal for Vista. These are the logs from Deckards System Scanner and Hijack This :-

Hi,

Welcome to Tech Support Forum.

It's normal not to see svchost.exe running since you don't have administrative rights to do so.

Clicking on Show processes for all users button on Task Manager will show them. You should receive a UAC prompt.

You are also running uTorrent. Please do not use any P2P programs while we are still cleaning the PC to prevent any infections from coming in.

A list of clean and infected P2P programs can be found at Malware Removal and Spyware Info.

The risks of using a P2P program are stated in this Sourceforge website and Information Week article.

Just yesterday my laptop started acting weird. I picked it up to use it and it froze. I restarted it and it wouldn't start up. I ran Windows startup repair a couple of times and it eventually came back on. Now when I turn it on it starts up fine, just as quick as it always did. Once I log into Windows though, it runs incredibly slow, eventually explorer will crash. If I run it in safe mode explorer will crash, restart, crash, restart and just continue this vicious circle. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic by the way. Another thing to note is when I run the Hard Disk check from the BIOS it fails and tells me to replace the hard disk. So what gives? Is my hard disk dead and needing replaced. If so, why will windos still boot. Or is my windows installation screwed.

Hello,

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate Build 7600. Yesterday while I was working I suddenly got BSOD for a split second, and I wasn't able to see the error or anything. When I rebooted it could not find the harddrive, so I rebooted once again, and this time Windows was started. It starts rather slow, and when I finally see the desktop I can't use the process bar, or start menu nor see my icons. And it says that an error with explorer.exe was found and that it is restarting explorer.exe, and it just does this over and over again.. I have now tried to restore my system to earlier point where Windows was working properly. I have tried sfc /scannow in cmd in safe mode and I have also tried chkdsk /r none of which helped.. What more options are there? I've tried searching around as well, but with no result. I suspect that this is due to overheating, which is often a problem with HP computers. My computer is not more than a month old though.

Hi Disku -

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

There are a few things that I suggest you look at and try:

? The Event Viewer -
START | type eventvwr into the Start Search box | right-click on eventvwr.exe that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view the various logs starting with the Administrative logs.

? Problem Reports and Solutions:
START | type wercon.exe into the Start Search box | right-click on wercon.exe that appears up"top | select Run as Administrator | view "See Problems to Check'.

? System Restore - If the problem that you are having started recently, you could perform a System Restore to a point prior to the system trouble beginning -
START | type rstrui.exe[COLOR]into the Start Search box | right-click on rstrui.exe that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | Begin the system restore

? SFC - Use the Windows System File Check/Repair utility -
START | type cmd.exe[COLOR] into the Start Search box | right-click on cmd.exe that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | A Command Prompt (DOS) screen should appear | Type sfc /scannow and press enter. This may take 10 minutes or it may run for hours.

Good Luck to you.

Regards. . .

If you do not have a Windows 7 installation disc you can download a free legal ISO image of Windows 7 SP1 at  Windows 7 Forums.  This image is hosted by the Digital River store which is an official distribution partner of Microsoft.  This is a genuine untouched image which is safe to download.

Part A, Steps 1a - 6a

The ISO image will need to be burned to a DVD in order to create a bootable installation disc.

1a)  To burn a ISO file to a DVD please download ImgBurn and install it.

2a)  Insert a blank DVD into your CD/DVD drive tray, and then close the tray.

3a)  Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc.

5a)  Locate the ISO file you want to burn, and click on the Open button.

6a)  Click on the blue arrow to start burning the bootable DVD.

Please note:  In order to boot from this DVD you may need to change the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD/DVD-ROM is the first device in the boot order, and the hdd is the second device.

I'm running W7 Ultimate x86.

Specifically it's just one one folder, but when I try the access the folder/path in Explorer, Explorer either crashes, hangs, or restarts.

It mainly always restarts when I try to access this one folder.

This only happens when I download a torrent from one torrent site I use, I know the file is clean, scanned it for viruses.

I can access the path just fine in alternative file manager that isn't Explorer, and I can play the video too.

Here's a YouTube video I made showing the issue

Crashing - YouTube

Please help, I have no idea how to fix Explorer from crashing on this on folder.

There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Event viewer (local) and look for the critical errors listed in the last day, week, etc. Then go to the windows log>application tab. Finally the windows Logs>system tabs.

You want to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

Hi everyone, I'm new here and I've been having some problems with explorer crashing. I've searched all over the net including various forums and while I've found cases similar to mine none of them are quite like it. For instance, explorer will crash and ask for me to restart it randomly. It's not the right-click crash like some have had, I've checked my registry for a machine throttling string that caused some people crashes, but mine will just happen out of the blue, usually (but not always) when I have an explorer window open.

The crash itself doesn't effect much. All my programs will continue to run as normal so it's not a huge deal, it's just annoying as it will happen sporadically throughout the day. I've ran various spyware, malware, and virus scans all to no avail and I've even used a registry cleaner. I've also tried running sfc /scannow in the command prompt as an administrator. I've rebooted several times since and it still happens. I can't reproduce it, it just happens out of nowhere, but here's the error.

So, this started happening after I downloaded a .OGM file to my desktop and ran it. Immediately after I opened it, explorer.exe began it's neverending cycle of crashing/restarting. I was only able to stop the message spam by entering task manager and manually ending the process.

The only reason I can even type here is by running 'restore' in task manager so I can browse my files and whatnot (which opened up explorer.exe again but didn't cause it to cycle, though I still couldn't see my desktop or task bars). However, if I so much as click the file I downloaded or any .OGM file on my PC, I get the crash message again. If I try to run explorer.exe again, it will continue it's crashing loop.

First thing I did was try a system restore to the 11th. No luck there.

Next, I uninstalled my Combined Community Codec Package and VLC media player (which is what I used for .OGM files), thinking it might help. Nope.

I then ran a scan with Malwarebytes, which came up with nothing, and I tried AVG and nothing happened, the scan did not begin.

I went to msconfig and did a selective startup so only microsoft files would load, but after the reboot the the neverending explorer crashes did not stop.

I then tried to reboot into safe mode, but both times I tried, my PC locked up midway through scanning drivers at the same time both times.

Getting desperate, I tried to boot from my Windows 7 CD. I got the 'loading windows files' message and load bar, but when I reached the Wind... Read more

A:explorer.exe repeatedly crashing/restarting

Update: After digging around and experimenting further, I think it might have something to do with the file thumbnail. I can see thumbnails of pictures and certain other movie files like .wmv, but if I try to see a thumbnail of a .OGM file, explorer crashes.

I tried the "regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll" and "regsvr32 shmedia.dll" commands fix that people with similar problems had luck with, but got the equally common "The module "shmedia.dll" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files. The specified module could not be found." error.

Recently I have been having a problem on a Vista PC. It started happening about a week ago and I have yet to find any solution to it. The explorer.exe crashes and restarts, only to crash again a few seconds later. This goes on in a continuous loop regardless of what I am doing, even if I leave the system to idle.

I have also tried running the system in Safe Mode and looking through the processes trees, however explorer.exe even shows the same symtoms in Safe Mode. I have tried several scans already, including running virus and maleware scans through Kaspersky, Trend Micro, Ad-Aware, and Counter-Spy, all of which came up with nothing. I have attempted to copy a explorer.exe from another computer and use that instead, but still no change.

I would appreciate any help that you can give, I am at a loss here. If you need any more info from me, I will be glad to provide it.

Two months ago, I had a strange event begin to happen: explorer.exe would crash, restart, then crash again...all in the span of a few seconds. It would do this over and over again, despite system restarts, etc. After a half-hour of browsing online, I found someone who had run into the same problem, and ComboFix was recommended. I downloaded ComboFix, ran it, and voila! the problem was solved. Explorer was no longer crashing and everything went back to normal.

A few hours ago, Explorer began crashing again. I was away from my computer for about three or four hours, so I am not too sure when it began to happen again. All I know is that when I left my PC, the explorer problem was not happening. But when I got back, like an annoying friend I had hoped to never see again, I realized that explorer was crashing over and over again. So, this time being prepared, I fired up ComboFix to let it do its magic. I watched as it went through all the steps and noticed that at step 30, a message popped up saying:

"Deleted C:\Windows\System32\idlrk.dll"

ComboFix finished the scanning and restarted the computer. After I logged back on, ComboFix started right back up again, as usual. However, instead of the dialog I saw the first time, talking about creating the log, ComboFix was outputting some sort of error message about being denied the right to remove idlrk.dll. I was going to take a screen shot of it, but did not get the chance; a BSoD occurred, and I had to r... Read more

Hi,

1. Get ProcDump and extract to C:\ProcDump
2. In the elevated command prompt run:

Code:
C:\ProcDump\procdump.exe -accepteula -e explorer.exe C:\ProcDump\

3. Initiate the explorer crash or just wait until it occurs.
4. Upload the dump from C:\ProcDump to SkyDrive/DropBox/GoogleDrive etc.

I think I may have a virus on my system. Explorer (the process) is constantly crashing and restarting. It's not producing any errors, just constantly disappearing and reappearing over and over. The icons on the desktop also disappear for a short moment when this happens.

What should I do to detrmine the cause of the problem?

Hi,

I've been using the Windows Classic theme for Windows XP for awhile and I tried to switch themes to an XP Theme today. The theme will load up ok, but when I try to open a window such as My Computer, My Documents or a browser or something it seems like Explorer either crashes and restarts or it just restarts and it automatically closes the window I was trying to open.

I'm running Windows XP Pro w/ Service Pack 2 and all updates if that at all helps. Anyone know what the heck may be going on? I appreciate your help.

Regards,
Roguefoxx

A:Themes Crashing / Restarting Explorer Problem

That's a weird problem. I'd run a virus scan and malware scan to make sure there's nothing like that on there. You might have to fix your Windows installation, possibly by reinstalling Windows. (You might try, say, doing Start --> Run and then "sfc /scannow" to start the Windows System File Checker. It's possible there's a corrupted file.)

Otherwise, you got me. Sounds like an unusual problem.

If clean install an OS reproduce the problem , it is a problem with something other than Windows. It could be HP driver or hardware.
If pssoble, try install Windows 8 in the same model as your PC and see if same issue happens, if the issue didn't reproduce, it is hardware issue.

Hi,

Suddenly I got this message on my computer that NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM is causing something to restart. Also in this message I could see something about c:\windows\services.exe.

After my computer restarted, I cannot logon to windows. If I logon in normal mode, after I enter my password, I see all the icons and everything showing up correctly but after the computer is done loading stuff (a few seconds later), the start menu goes away among with all the icons on my desktop and the computer pretty much crashes! If I keep the computer on the current screen, a few minutes later I get a message that explorer has crashed etc etc.

I tried on-line antiviruses, patches, etc but I can't get my windows back to work normally. I cannot detect what problem (virus or trojan or whatever) I have.

Please note that I haven't upgraded to Service Pack 2 and that I use McAfee VirusScan 8.0

Thank you,
A - once again - disappointed Windows user that has had enough and is ready to completely change to Linux...

Sometimes my computer will stay on for hours, other times it will shut itself off after a few minutes. About a month ago I got a BSOD with the driver_power_state_failure message. I reinstalled my Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit and things seemed to be okay for a day or two but then problems continued. I started my PC up in Safe Mode and it stayed on all day, no power failure, I did a device check and it came up with 2 errors:

Consumer IR Device has a driver problem.
eHome Infared Receiver(USBCIR) has a driver problem.

I tried fixing them through the device manager and both failed.

It has Windows 7 32 bit installed.
The original OS on the system was Vista.

The last time I installed Windows 7 was about a month ago.

Hi - I have just built a new i7 920 for a mate, he does graphic work so he needed XP 32 bit OS so as to be compatible with his current software(he will upgrade in the near future).
I used a Gigabyte EX58-UD3R board with 6GB of PC3 12800 OCZ Gold memory, a Zalman 750Watt PSU, CPU is i7 920 with standard cooler, 7200rpm Western Digital Cabiar drive, LG Dual layer +/- burner and Quadro 4850 graphics.
My problem is that the system starts up and seemed to run fine but then simply would reboot. It stays running fine in bios, and I have tried a Windows repair and a full fresh re-image. These haven't worked, the system kept running fine whilst it was loading the OS, then when I loaded all the drivers all was well, but then it crashed and restarts when Windows is simply starting and running for a minute or a few seconds, or before it even fully starts. The OS is Service Pack 3......
Pls note, it is not blue screening, it's as if some one has hit the reset button....
Am I missing something important about compatability of the OS here with the i7 ??? pls help - desperate to get this fixed asap!

My computer has absolutely lost its mind. I have a Gateway 466 celeron (I know it's a dinosaur)with 256MB of RAM, a 160GB hd inside, plus a external 200GB hd, and I'm running XP Pro. It all started about a week ago. Zone Labs Security Suite (the most current version) crashed and would not start back up out of the blue. I restarted my computer and it still crashed. I restarted once more and uninstalled Zone Labs. Everything seemed fine for the rest of that day. The following day I attempted to update Itunes and started to download the install file. When I got home that night it said that the installer was corrupt and couldn't install it. After that my computer started to randomly restart itself. I finally downloaded AVG and ran a virus scan. It said it didn't find anything. When I would try to update the virus definitions it would constantly error out saying that there was an error. I ended up uninstalling AVG and have since downloaded Ace Utilities to scan my registry. It fixed quite a few things, but things are still going crazy. The majority of programs that I download, the installers won't work, but then again today I was able to download and install AVG AntiSpyware. The thing will work one minute and go crazy the next. I tried opening a Word document yesterday and it went through like it was going to install Word, but said the installer was corrupt giving me the NSIS error, so therefore Word is pretty much non-useable. Lately my computer has been running pretty slow and all of my programs keep crashing (Chrome, Safari, iTunes, Adobe Audition). Also Windows frequently restarts without any kind of warning at all. The screen just cuts to black and then the boot process starts.

Please let me know what I can do to fix this problem.

Hi, I have windows Vista Home premium 32 bit OS installed on my computer. For the past week or so, my computer has been acting really weird and running extremely slow. Firefox won't load some pages. Most sites that equire secure sign-ins take ages. Like ebay, and online bankings, HSBC etc. and then for some reason my browser goes offline out of the blue, tells me that I can't browse because the browser is working offline (happens a lot more on IE than Fiefox though, but it does happen on both).

Also sometimes firefox shuts down on its own, without any warning or an error message, when I download something, clicking on the recently downloaded programme doesn't open it, when I right click and then open the folder containing the downloaded item, even the folder doesn't open and when I try to manually open the "download" folder or sometimes even when I try to open control panel, I get a message windows explorer has stopped working and is restarting, sometimes not even the message and windows explorer just crashes on it's own without any error.

I've tried using google chome, but sometimes it just won't load pages. I click on the plus tab, and type the adress some it would load, but some it won't no matter what. the page stays blank which is weid because I've used Chrome before and when you open a new tab the page is never blank, instead it shows your previously opened pages or the history (unless you specifically tell chrom...
