Q: Windows XP Modifications/Restrictions

Hello,

I need to restrict the below items. Preferably through the registry. I would like the restrictions to only affect non-Admin accounts. Is there a way to do this? Thanks for any assistance.

Sam

This is a list of the items I'd like to change/restrict:

Remove the Control Panel, Printer, and Network Setting for the Classic Start Menu
Remove the Control Panel icon
Remove the Printers and Faxes icon
Remove the Help and Support icon
Prevent changes to Explorer?s Advanced registry settings.
Prevent access to the taskbar, command prompt, registry editor.
Prevent access to MMC utilities.
Prevent password changes
Remove CD and DVD burning features
Disable System Tools and other management programs
Internet Explorer
Prevent changes in IE registry settings
Prevent right-click in IE
Prevent printing
Disable AutoComplete
Remove Find Files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just purchased a new computer with the win 7 installed. I believe that this is the bottom version of the OS.
I read that you can increase the capability of the factory version by purchasing a "software key" that improves the OS.
My question is, how much does this cost ,and what other features come with that modification, and is it worth it for someone like me that basically spends most of my computer time on-line read blogs and news.

If that's all you do with it and your happy, why go to the expense and the hassle,
stick with what you have in my opinion. But if you really want to change have a read here.

I have Windows XP Home edition on my computer at home - Is there a way I can restrict access to the right click on taskbar, disable acess to Control Panel,Disable installiations of programs, etc. etc. etc.

If this is a program downloaded off the Internet, it needs to be FREE and without limitations, or disabled features.

Then for the IE: Resrict IE access to inapproporiate sites etc. (Porn, violence) you get the idea...

I know in XP Pro you can go to: Run,"gpedit.msc" but will not work in HOME. Thanks for any help you can give me.

If you are not averse to tweaking the registry yourself, you can probably find all the equivalent restrictions in Winguides registry tweaker:

http://www.winguides.com/software/display.php/1/

example:

Disable Taskbar Context Menus (All Versions)
Category: Home > Security > Start Menu and Taskbar
Download: WinGuides Tweak Manager
This setting removes the context menus (right click on the taskbar) for the system tray, including the Start button, Tab control, and Clock.

Open your registry and find the key below.

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value called 'NoTrayContextMenu' using the settings below.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.
(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
NoTrayContextMenu REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Exp...

Settings:
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer]
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer]
Name: NoTrayContextMenu
Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)Click to expand...
As for restricting specific sites or domains, you can do that directly using Internet Options > Security > Restricted Zones -- just add the domains or urls there. But this only works for specific sites and domains. Broad restrictions require filtering software -- which you have to ... Read more

Hi there,

So, i own a pc, a laptop and an xbox 360 and they are all connected to my home network via a router. now, when i have all three of these running at the same time it can cause a great deal of annoyance and confusion when we are all trying to compete for the most amount of bandwidth,

For example, my brother will be playing halo 2 and have msn open and i will be trying to surf the net on my laptop. now my brother will be complaing that he is not getting "host" and spends some of his games in red bar and my internet pages take a few minutes to load.

so i was wondering if there are any programs or freeware out there that i can go and buy so that i can modify it so that i can tell my router to give my xbox (lets say....) 60 percent of my bandwidth while splitting the other 40% between the two computers and then when the xbox is off it diverts the bandwidth to where it is needed most

If there is anything out there that can help me please post a name and/or link and it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Hi,

I have just set up a new PC for my office at work. It is a shared PC with 13 users. On one user account I have set control panel restrictions, registry edits, wallpaper and home folder path etc. So basically I have applied all the settings I need to this one account.

Now my question is, how I can apply the same settings to all of the other accounts. I think I need to set up a user profile, but I don't know how to go about doing that. Most of the guides on the Internet relate to server-based profiles, but this is not linked to a network, just a standalone PC.

Any help on this would be greatly apprieciated.

A:Windows User Restrictions

Go to START > Control Panel > User Accounts, create your accounts, then you can right click on the Start button and select Explore...Go to C:\Documents and Settings click the folder of the user you made all the settings for...(make sure hidden files and folders are showing and hidden extensions are showing), then copy all to the new accounts, or copy to "All Users" if thats available.

You need to be logged on as admin I believe.

I am getting ready to assemble a computer from scratch and install the operating system for a 2 computer office where my wife works. (computer crashed, currently running Windows XP SP3) I am going to install Windows Home Prem 7 full version. My question is if I do this at home and activate Windows from my home then take the Computer to the office and set it up, will it then tell me that it is an unauthorized Windows OS. I guess another way to ask is does the activation process read the hardware on the computer only or does it also read the IP address of the Modem and/or Router during activation?

Thanks

I have a Windows 7 64-Bit system on which I was the only user... until yesterday. I've created a new "standard" second user.

In the past, whenever I've installed software, I've always chosen the option to "make available to all users" because I was the only user on the system. In hindsight, I probably should have installed software only available to me in case this scenerio developed.

My question: Is there some way I can remove access to some of my applications by the new user I've created?

Thank you in advance.

A:Access Restrictions with Windows 7

Hello Nick, and welcome to Seven Forums.

There are a few options, but it depends on what edition (ex: Home Premium, Ultimate, etc...) of Windows 7 you have for which options you may be able to use since some editions do not include group policy. If you could let us know what edition you have first, then we could give you better suggestions that would work for that edition.

If you're a system administrator, you should know how to do this. Audit object access for success. Be warned, however, that your audit log will be big!

I actually haven't purchased a Windows 8 machine, yet, but I have a question. In my current Vista system, when I am working with my mp3 files, I often create play lists that exceed 100 songs. In Vista, 99 is the highest track number you can have - so all mixes if you want them played in track order, has to stop at 99.

Is that the case with Windows 8? Or can I have 100+ track numbers?

Secondary question: does anyone know of a way to open a folder of songs and have the tracks renumbered automatically rather than having to open and edit each file?

A:windows 8 hardware restrictions

You can make as many changes as you want. At some point (and it is not a single number, because it depends on a lot of factors) you have to re-activate, but you are allowed to reactivate as many times as you want (unless the code is obviously released in the wild and 90000000000 people are activating with it).

New to XP (media center sp2), not new to Windows OS. Are there any "out of the box" tweaks/modifications that are recommended? Any XP tweak guides? I am not a gamer, don't overclock...just want it stable and lean without all the unecessary background apps running and dont need all the superfluous software.

For example, do many with XP disable system restore? I did with my old OS as I have an external HD withh system backup images. Should I keep the "enable write caching on the disk" checked in the HD setting in the device manager? Is Corel Photo CCentter bundled with any other software? I have many other questions, but willl settle for feedback first.

Also, if anyone has recently purchased a Dell E510 (or other Dell) can you tell me all the trial ware that I can uninstall? I am afraid to get rid of too much because I fear its bundled into other apps that I need. I curse the OEMs for doing this.

Thanks for any advice or links

Hi all, I've been hard at work in modifiying my watercooling unit, I know it is not such a good product, but after modifications it is amazing. Soon I will post some pictures if anyone is interested. Here is a list of what I've done:

1. Drained the system
2. Took it apart
3. Took out all stock fans, replaced with Antec Led Fans
4. Took out the restrictive stock tubing, replaced with Tygon 3/8
5. Ran leak test for 3 hours, at the beginning there was one leak, which I fixed with some tightening of c-clamp.
6. Modified front panel, placed another grill, as well as the back panel
7. Modified knob lightning

After all this, when I replaced the tubing, I immediately noticed that the flow meter was spinning much faster, and this effectively reduced my temperatures about 2-3 Celsius at load. Replacing the fans, with better airflow and quieter fans also brought the temps down 1-2 Celsius, also the use of Danger Den MCT-5 Coolant brought my temperatures down 2-3 Celsius as well.
In the end, I used to get a load temp of about 44 Celsius, now I only get about 37-38 Celsius. Quite pleased with the project and acheivement. If you guys want pictures, or illustrations of how I did this, just ask. I will post them later.

Anyone could help me to make this a working file at Windows Seven?
I used it on XP to change my IP until now, but when I try to run now it doesn't work
Obs: Offboard is the name of the connection

A:[Help] Modifications in a batch file

Try this:

Code:

ipconfig /release
netsh interface ip set address "Offboard" static 111.111.111.111 255.0.0.0
netsh interface ip set address "Offboard" dhcp
ipconfig /renew
Of course it might work without the quotation marks, but if the name is Offboard then you'll need it capitalized correctly for it to work, IIRC.

Also, the help info in the command shows some other options as well that you might want ot take a look at - in *particular* if the OS is still *internally* recognizing the connection as "Local Area Connection":

Code:
C:\>netsh interface ip set address -?

I guess I'll ask this here as I cannot get through to RT Se7en Lite themselves. I used eicfg removal so I can have my install USB work for any of the versions. When I go to use RT Se7en Lite it asks which version I want to modify. I think the somewhat minor things I want to change will work for all if not most of the versions. Will it actually modify them all or is there any way to select more than one version or do I have to do each individually? Or run the eicfg after I do mods?

Also does anyone know what is with RT Se7en Lite? I sent an email to their support email and I get (several days of) messages that it is not deliverable: 454 4.7.0 TLS not available due to local problem. Their main website will never connect.

Also is there a W7 download available that has all of the updates or at least most of them to start with? I have one referred to from here that has SP1, but it takes tons of updates.

Thanks here.

Hi all, I don't know a lot about computers, so bear with me... I just inherited an HP Pavilion HPE h8-1050 Desktop computer (http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02859331).  It came with Windows 7, and I plan on upgrading to Windows 10 before the July 26th "free upgrade" deadline. (although I could be talked out of that, if it matters).   I would, ideally, like to install Realtek Audio Manager to replace the Beats Audio that the machine came with.  From what I've read online, it seems that it may not be possible.  I plan to do some audio recording on this new machine, and I don't really want everything filtering through Beats, with its kooky settings and sound manipulations.   I tried to download the Realtek Audio Driver, but after the install it doesn't show up anywhere (other than Add/Remove Programs, strangely).  It doesn't appear in Control Panel, or Device Manager, or Programs.   The only file that shows up in a computer-wide search is the setup file, which I've run twice.  I certainly don't have the option or access to choose it over Beats.  I have a feeling it's simply not compatible.   So I guess my question is this: Is there a modification I can make to this machine (ie, new sound card?) so that I can install and use Realtek? Or is Beats simply hardwired into the motherboard in such a way that there are no alternatives.   Thanks for reading,Nathan

Hello there, I am thinking of puchasing an M710 and I had a few questions I am hoping people could answer for me before taking the plunge. In terms of the power supply I belive its quite low wattage, in the low 200's - is it possible to upgrade this at a later date. I may down the line wish to buy a graphics card and I know it will need a better psu. In terms of graphics cards, the power should be the only issue, the case itself is big enough to fit some standard graphics cards. For RAM, how many RAM slots are there? if I get the 8GB option, is that going to be one stick of 8 or 2x4gbs - again if I want to upgrade this, will there be an available slot, or will I have to get rid of the exsisting RAM? I am going to add an SSD, will they automatically load the OS on the SSD as opposed to the standard 500gb hard drive? Thanks a lot in advance

Hi everybody,
ATA V. 1.9.7312.32791 - fresh install, no update
Just recently installed Microsoft's ATA. I only use lightweight deployment option for ata gateways on every domain controller available, no other ata gateways in use. So for my understanding I don't need any configuration of event forwarding since the lightweight
gateways are able to read any event locally.

I am not able to get a report about modifications of sensitive groups, it's greyed out. An informational message below it says: "No modifications of sensitive groups were observed, make sure that events forwarding is properly configured."
I changed many things about my sensitive groups for testing purpose btw.
Any hints?
Thanks!

Thanks, regards, tim

Hey there guys...

I use a wireless network which utilizes MAC address filtering for security purposes and WEP encryption. I have a MAC address which is white listed on the network and am successfully able to access it by spoofing in my windows XP PC.

However, windows 8 has been giving me headaches since the last week because it simply refuses to alter the mac address to anything with the first octet being '00'.

What do I do? Please please I am in dire need of your help. Can I bypass this *** restriction by fiddling with the registry somehow or the device drivers?

I am using Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222 and TP Link WN7200ND devices.

Please tell me a way in order to alter the MAC in my windows 8 or some way to scan the network with my windows XP PC and find out some other white listed MAC addresses from the router by LINUX or whatever means possible... PLEASE...
P.S: My english is not very goodso please don't use difficult terminology (technicals excepted)

Can I use airodump -ng on windows somehow (I don't know linux much) to sniff the whitelisted macs?

Mac address restrictions on a home network is not worth it. Now if you are trying to get around this restriction on someone else's wifi network. Cannot really help you.

Hi,

I have a shared drive on my primary computer running Windows 7 but had to give "everyone" on the network privileges. I only want to share it with one other Windows 7 computer on the home network. When I go to the security tab of the property box and choose add I only get me primary computer under locations even though I can ping the secondary computer. So how do I restrict access over the home network to only one other computer? HomeGroup won't work fro me because I am sharing files on the C drive that are not in my Documents folder.

I have disabled the Secure Boot, changed the Boot Priority ordem to USB drive and tried to install the Linux system. It shows a message of successful installation and asks to restart the computer. However, when it restarts, there is a message of Boot error and it asks for a Boot disk or a Boot removable device...I have real somewhere that the Boot should be in Legacy mode, but it on-line shows this option when the CSM option is set to always, however, without giving me access to that...

I am running AdAware/AdWatch on Windows XP with IE6.
AdWatch is showing a continuous attempt to modify the registry. This is what the typical modification attempt log shows:
registry modification detected.

Ad-Watch event log
Root:HKEY_CURRENT USER
Key:software\microsoft\internetexplorer\main
value: search page
data:http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch
new data:http://www.google.com

Is this connected to MS' Windows Live Page that comes up with the opening of IE6?
Any input or help on what is going will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A:Ad-Watch showing continuous registry modifications

It looks like you had microsoft live search set as your search engine possibly when you installed a windows live component and then you installed something like google toolbar which wants to change it to google.

Did you approve or deny the change?

OR just turn off adwatch , make the change and turn it back on.

Hello,

I wonder what the best tool for Windows XP is for viewing recent (preferrably as specified by user) modifications to the registry, including hidden ones if that is possible?

Hi,

I have been infected 2 days ago and Windows Update didn't work anymore (error code 80246008). So I have cleaned the corrupt files with MicrosoftFixit found on the Web.

Finally, I have got the BITS service working again with the following batch program wich calls himself the "BITS.reg" file :

sc create BITS binpath= "c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" start= delayed-auto
regedit /s c:\Users\fab\Desktop\BITS.REG
net start bits
rmdir %windir%\softwaredistribution /s /q
regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 /s atl.dll
regsvr32 /s wups.dll
regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll
regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
net start wuauserv

I execute this bacth file as Administrator and the BITS key appears in registry with Windows Update working fine.

The issue is that the modifications in the registry base is not taken into account for the next startup of Windows 7 : I can't see anymore the BITS key and I have to run this bacth program every time there's a new startup of Windows 7.

Is it a problem of right persmissions on this Key ? Have I got to change the owner as Administrator ?

Here is the file BITS.reg :

Hi, lets get this straight you open regedit and the Bits service is there (as you posted). Then you restart your computer and do not run the .Bat file if you open regedit the bits service is completely missing from the registry? OR is it that Bits is simply not running in services (automatic delayed start)? Is your user name fab?

Can anyone recommend any good software for logging computer modifications and maintenance? I support my family and friends and sometimes it's hard to keep all all the changes I have done over the years in my lil noggin. Also it would help me log fixes so I could reference if someone else had the same issue I could more easily reference the fix.

Hi - I'm new here so please be kind.

I have just bought a Packard Bell IMEDIA A3317 - 3G, triple Phenom core, graphics & sound integrated in motherboard, 320G HD, Vista Home basic. No driver discs included, but 2 created from within Vista for a) Vista re-install and b) Apps Drivers

I need to do ASP programming, so tried loading Win 2000 Professional (SP4) onto a new 320G HD. Sadly, the only screen resolution that works is 640/480 . I obviously need win2000 Pro drivers - since this is a standard package computer, one would imagine that they would be available as a block somewhere, but no joy in finding them.

The screen resolution hinders (prevents) setup of internet access, so I can't access Driver Robot over the net (driver robot needs to work on the machine with the problem)

There is a PCI-E slot, but am not sure if that would be a solution.

This must be a problem others have faced somewhere (or am I the only one!!!!! ) Any ideas on where to get a package of drivers? or what else I could do?

Thanks in advance

Tsarina

P.S. I know it isn't the best of machines, but my needs are very simple - just a little ASP development and writing letters.

im on win xp sp3, system scanners are cccleaner,nod32 and superanti spyware.

this is what happened.

im browsing though my yahoo mail inbox, saw this spam (subject: unknown)
decided to add the email address to blocked emails. i have to open the email so that i can see the address.
the problem began.

these are my troubleshooting procedures:
1. ran scanners - nothing detected
2. cleaned cookies, history
3. ccleaner registry scan - nothing
4. system restore - still
5. imported a backup reg file

I believe that upon opening the email it modified some of registry keys for the keyboard since i dont see any unrecognized processes in my task manager, at least from the visible list.

it is quite annoying since i use keyboard shortcuts alot like ctrl+arrow keys to navigate on some texts.

also some keys that have been modified is:

insert key = stand bys the PC
pressing - = -0
pressing 1 = `1

any help will be very much appreciated

Hi people..

as suspected opening the email modified current keyboard mapping.

After hours of digging solutions in the net i found this one:

Restore keyboard mapping - Dev Hardware

reinstallation of the keyboard registry keys for the US layout solved my issue..

my keyboard is running smoothly after the steps given in that thread.

lesson learned: if the spam is in the inbox, move it to spam folder to reduce the risks if you intend to view it.

sorry can't find any edit button on my original post.

I'm tagging this as solved.

Hi guys,

I deactivated some processes in msconfig to improve the startup speed of my computer. I always did some changes, rebooted the computer and looked whether everything is still working. It looked as if everything was working, but then I recognised that there were blue frames around my desktop symbols:

Kostenlos Bilder hochladen | img4web.com

Further I recognised, that Internet Explorer 8 and Microsoft Excel 2003 show massive Display Errors (the main problem is, that images are not displayed properly):

Kostenlos Bilder hochladen | img4web.com

So I decided to re-activate the processes I deactivated before the last re-boot. It didn't change a thing. Then I decided to re-activate all processes, but even this didn't help:

Kostenlos Bilder hochladen | img4web.com

Apart from the changes is msconfig I haven't done any changes in the time when the error first appeared. It seems quite strange to me, that re-activating the processes does not fix the problem.

My operating system is Windows XP Professional SP3.
Unfortunately System recovery was disabled before I did the changes (Yes, I will activate it for future modifications on my system), so I can't simply un-do everything.

I'm really desperate about this problem and really hope, that someone here can help me (otherwise I will re-install Windows, but this seems a bit excessive ;-) ).

Many thanks in advance ! :)
Florian

Hellllllo !

On my work laptop I have my Administrator account, which I use all the time, and a Guest account that people can use to go on the Internet etc.

What I have not found out how to do yet is to prevent the Guest account users from :

- Installing or removing software
- Changing any setting in control panel (or the shortcuts leading to it, such as "right-click on the Desktop > personalize"
- Changing internet connections (I've caught guests on the neighbor's open network often, even though my WPA2 wireless network is remembered)

What I have found how to do, using permissions:

- Open specific programs (I have gone and edited the permissions on all the .exes files for the programs I wanted to restrict, and it works fine)
- Access partitions or hard drives (Guests only see the path exists, they have no access and no info to the partitions/drives I restricted)

Now, about my problem, what I've tried so far:

- Same as I did to restrict access to partitions/hard drives, using permissions: I tried to modify the permissions of the Guest account to allow only reading and launching apps on C: as a whole. That didn't work though, Windows wouldn't let me change the permissions on the system disc, even as an administrator with UAC off. I tried many combinations of allow/deny and no change is permitted.

So, what can I do ? Right now, there are only a few shortcuts on the Guest account desktop, but I've tested it: using the Start menu or the com... Read more

A:How to prevent Guest account from making modifications to the computer

A guest account DOESN'T have admin rights, just as a standard user. He/she cannot modify registry keys in HKLM so cannot modify system wide settings!

He can change his own font and his own windows sounds. But not install programs.
