Dropping cell phone on the keyboard caused hard drive failure?

Q: Dropping cell phone on the keyboard caused hard drive failure?

Dropped my cell phone on the right hand side of my keyboard and in front of the keyboard and my laptop instantly rebooted. Each time I reboot, it takes a very long time. When I finally login, I can see all my files but they take long to open. I did the F12 diagnostics and it gave me error message: 2000-01 42 for my hard drive not working.
It seems so strange that dropping something so light on my keyboard could cause this much damage! Could there just be something that disconnected? Is there anything I can do to save some recent photos from my computer? Any recommendations on saving files or restoring function would be appreciated!

Preferred Solution: Dropping cell phone on the keyboard caused hard drive failure?

I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

The drive needs to be replaced - yes, a sudden shock to the drive -- even a seemingly minor one - can destroy it.
To attempt recovery, remove the drive from the system, mount it in a USB shell, and attach it to a working system. You may be able to recover at least some data. If you cannot, there's always the option of professional data recovery, though the cost isn't inconsiderable -- it'll start at $600 or so and can easily escalate rapidly beyond that.
Something like this is what you'll need;
www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx
Once the drive is replaced, be sure you purchase a backup drive - and keep backups going forward.

This was on a Win7 PC, but I think it would also apply to Win8 systems...

My son brought over his friend's "sick" PC last night. It is a homebuilt, water cooled AMD Phenom II x 6 based system with 4GB of DDR3 RAM, nVidia GTX 9800 video card, Corsair 550 watt power supply and a NZXT case, 2 DVD burners and 3 SATA hard drives (80GB boot, Windows 7; 500GB data, 1TB data), built on a GigaByte GA-880GA-UD3H_Rev_2.2 motherboard.

The system would boot into Windows 7, then randomly crash with a screen that was colored with lines all over it, no BSOD's. Sometimes, the PC would crash when loading Windows 7 and sometimes it would run for a few minutes and then crash.

I went into the BIOS and set it to "fail safe default" since I diidn't know if/what the builder did with overclocking, etc... and started basic troubleshooting. As I was about to hook up a know good WD Raptor hard drive from my bench to run diagnostics on the system, we saw that the SATA data connector on the Seagate 1TB hard drive had broken off and the cable was just barely connected to the hard drive. The plastic part of the SATA data connector was still in the cable and the bare data pins were showing at the rear of the hard drive. This was a data drive, not the boot drive, BTW...

I powered it down, removed the damaged hard drive and then powered the PC back up and all was fine, no crashes or anything. I hooked the hard drive to an external SATA hard drive caddy and played with it until... Read more

My stupid LG cell phone is listed along with may harddrives in windows explorer. As far as I can tell, it serves no function being there, but whenever I accidntally click on it, explorer crashes. How can I remove it?

A:LG cell phone listed along with hard drives - causing crashes...

When you first plugged it in, I would think Windows Update installed a driver. Maybe you should see if LG has software for it. The phone should show up as a removable device, in explorer. My Windows phone does.

It may or may not be the best idea, but it can be uninstalled in Device manager. But I believe it should show up when connected. But, as I said, it can be uninstalled. Right click the LG phone and select uninstall. I would try the Update Driver first, though.

Have a memory card in my cell phone that I should be able to transfer infomation back and forth to my computer directly without additonal software. When I plug the phone into the USB it configures all the drivers and such and the bubble pops up "Your New Hardware is Ready to Use" but nothing happens. The "Safely Remove Device" green arrow icon is not there, the device is not listed in my computer or Device manager. When I unplug and plug the phone in it makes the connecting beep that all devices make, starts to charge the phone and thats where it all ends.

A:Removable Drive/Memory Card/USB/Cell Phone???

Take a look at your phone while you plug it in. There could be some kind of note that it's plugged into a PC, and you'd need to make it communicate with the PC. Last resort would be simple to remove the memory card and insert it directly to a memory card reader...

I recently installed windows xp pro on my computer.
Everything is working ok except my 3.5 floppy drive.
If I insert a good disk (checked on laptop) and request a dir read I get an correct dir read after fresh computer start. After that no matter what disk I put into the floppy drive I get the same dir read as from the first disk.

If I restart the computer the floppy will read a new disk directory ok the first time but then it will not read another disk. If I insert five disks into the drive it gives me the dir of the first disk.

I have change floppy disk drives. I have checked all disk on another computer to prove they are good. At one point the XP program wrote data and new directory over information on a disk inserted into the floppy. This problem began immediately after XP pro was loaded to replace the previous MICROSOFT DIaster Windows ME

IS it Windows (garbage) xp system or do I have a VIRUS. I have done all the simple support junk on the MS web and help systems That simply ask me if Microsoft Corp is in Washington State (as usual) but do not address the specific issue
I have checked the floppy driver via hardware and system. It is there and is the same driver as on another XP computer. When I check floppy drive the message says equipment working properly.
It appears that NEIL has a similar problem. What Say you COMPUTER GURUS?

If you've verified that all devices are plugged in to power and the correct cable (ie floppy cable for floppy and ide/sata for HD), then it's possible that the power supply failing could have damaged the circuitry on the drives.

Welcome to SevenForums!

A couple of things to check :

1. Is the SATA cable securely plugged into the MOBO and drive? Could it be a loose connection?
2. Can you install and run CrystalDiskInfo on the problem hard drive, and paste a maximised image of it here for us to look at?

Others may have other suggestions too.

Hi,

My laptop just died (HP Pavilion dv2418nr), and from the bit of Googling I've done so far, I suspect a NVIDIA graphics/motherboard failure (apparently common with these dv2000 series laptops).

I'm in the process of looking for a new laptop. In the meanwhile, I'd like to know if what I'm planning on doing will "simply work", or if there are unhappy issues I may have to deal with. I'd like to simply drop my hard drive into a new machine, and all will be well (all my programs and data running as they should, without the need for a new OS installation).

I purchased that dv2418nr machine used, just a couple months ago. At the time, it had Windows 7, 64 bit installed, and all seemed to be well. Originally, it seems this machine came with Windows Vista installed. The first thing I did was to replace the hard drive with my own brand new drive (Seagate SATA 500 GB, 7200 rpm). Onto that drive, I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7, 64 bit. All was wonderful, until yesterday's dramatic demise of the computer (froze, and ever since, won't boot up at all).

Just as a test, I put the old hard drive back into the machine, to see if it was a hard drive issue, but the same thing happens - no boot up. From this little test, I'm assuming that it's not a hard drive issue, so I'm assuming my new 500 GB hard drive is just fine.

As mentioned above, I'd very much like to get a new laptop, and simply drop my hard drive into it, ... Read more

Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

A:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

The other day I was workigna t ym computer, when it started to show tell tale signs of HDD failure, and then would not boot, could hear thrashing and clicking etc when trying to read it.

I was pretty annoyed about that but I thought oh well its all backed up just need a new HDD.

So got a new one ordered all specs reccommended by the computer manufacturer, installed by a preofessional too.

*** was going well, new OS flying along nicely so I went to my external HDD to transfer some data. Uppon trying to open my 1.5tb external HDD I realise windows cannot read it, although it is shown in "device manager" as a usb sotrage device. My other lapotop wont read it, nor a mac, nor linux even with force boot command.

I then go to my emergency backup 320gb hard drive with a small fraction of my important stuff on it. this 320gb hard drive WAS readable when I installed my new HDD with OS on it, but I went to the 1.5tb first as it had more on. But now even the 320 GB hard drive cannot be read, by a selection of computers.

I then plugged by 8GB Nokia N95 in and now it cannot even be read.

Complete disaster.

I have tried chkdsk, macs reading all drives, linux force boot commands.

I am quite scared that my new 500gb OS hard drive will fail soon too but I dont know what is causing this please any help much appreciated.

Regards

Steve

A:Hard Drive failure + External HDD Failure Similtaneously

What OS?
Look in Event Viewer/System for any red marks that may provide clues.
I understand the initial drive failure. but the subsequent failures suggest a major problem with the computer itself. Power supply, memory IDE controller, motherboard?
A virus could do this. There may be some rogue file on the external drive.

Hardware is not my forté. I'm troubleshooting an issue from 3000 miles of it's location. My buddy is notorious for loading all kinds of crap on his laptop (games, shareware, etc.). But he's honest with about the junk he loads. And I help him because he begs and that's always a good time.

Sony Viao Laptop, windows XP, DSL net. No installs for the past 2 weeks. No hardware changes. Surfing usual sites only. Out of nowhere, scan disk ran on his XP system at boot up. Errors stating "First allocation unit is not valid... blah blah truncated.. blah blah".

I had him skip the scan, and he was also getting various corrupt file errors (classic tgcmd.exe spyware etc) and ran both TuneUp Utility and Spybot S&D. After reboot, his scan disk ran for 2 HOURS, but subsequent boots have been scan free. The only other thing of note is that he'd recently done a (GRRR!!) windows update, which doesn't seem able to complete now. (no biggie)

My concern is this. Allocation unit error screams HARD DRIVE! to me. But I'm a putz when it comes to A+ (yeah yeah, someday). That would make sense if he had changed anything drastically, especially hardware, on his laptop. But since he hasn't, it makes me worry that he may have been (or is being) compromised.

I've had him run tests on his ports on "Shields Up!" and he fails on TCP and Telnet access... basically, $2/hr crackwhores are harder to get into than his laptop. Could spyware be t... Read more

Ok, you're crazy.

The error message hasn't returned? It's worth doing a defrag too as this may error if there's errors on hd so you'll know yeh or neh.

If hd's ok run a sfc: command prompt, type sfc /scannow (note space) and it'll fix any corrupt system files from xp disc. If you want to know if anthing's been fixed after:
Click Start, Run, Type: eventvwr.msc and then Click OK

Click System

Then under Source find Windows File Protection (WFP) If there are only two entries, it means 1) It started 2) It finished.

If there are any more it means it has replaced a file. Just double click it to find out what it has done.

Hi: The only issue I may be able to help you with is the wifi. You stated that you installed the Intel wifi driver but your notebook comes with the Broadcom wifi card according to the parts list. http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?type=PROD&SearchText=M1X98UA So, you would need this wireless driver for that model wifi card... This package provides the Broadcom Wireless LAN drivers for supported notebook models running a supported operating system. So I've recently built a computer, everything was working fine but after a month or so it started freezing randomly, only fixed by restart. Then on boot some hard drives would say they have bad sectors and failed SMART. After a few weeks eventually the entire system crashed and would not boot on any of my drives.

I managed to get it boot on a CD and reformatted the SSD drive that the operating system was on. I replaced the (supposedly) failing drives and things were looking good. But it wasn't more then a week or two when it started freezing randomly again (sometimes in the middle of activities, sometimes when it was just left on) And again saying the, now brand new, drive was failing, though from everything I can tell it is not when I run disk checks from booting from a boot CD.

I'm not expert so I have really am at a loss as to what to check. I can't afford to keep replacing my hard drives and like I said it doesn't even seem to be actually true, if I disconnect then reconnect the drive it seems to come up fine.

My suspicion is that either the SSD drive, that the OS is on, is causing the trouble or else its my motherboard. Honestly, I have no proof of either but I am pretty much out of my depth here. Here is the general specs on my system:

Mother board: ASUS P8Z77-V LK LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

S.M.A.R.T. is enabled in the HD firmware. Failures at that level are purely hardware related. Such failures create bad sectors.

Q.E.D.:- the drive is just cr*p.

IMO, the motherboard could never create a HD failure - - while software can do so as well as bad user procedures
(eg sharing r/w a folded and two or more users opening the same file at the same time).
Bad disk drivers would easily be a contributor too.

So, I had gotten up this morning and was on my computer fine and dandy for a couple of hours and left for class at around 1:30 PM. When I return at around 4, I turn on my monitor and there's a blinking underscore on the top right of my screen. I went ahead and made a startup repair disc for Windows 7, but it could not find anything wrong with the system. I then went into the ACER factory settings utility on the same disc and both options:

> Completely Restore System to Factory Defaults
Restore your PC to factory default status. All data on C: drive will be deleted.

> Restore Operating System and Retain User Data
Restore only the operating system of your PC to the factory defaults. Files from your user accounts will be transferred to C:\Backup. This option will not remove persistent viruses or malware.

Are grayed out. I assumed that this could only be because it wasn't detecting my hard drive? I went into the setup menu in the BIOS, and I see:

> IDE Primary Master [Not Detected]
> IDE Primary Slave [Not Detected]
> SATA7 [Not Detected]
> SATA8 [Not Detected]

However, when I start up the computer it says it's automatically detecting my SATA drives. I honestly have no idea what the difference between IDE and SATA mean, or if my computer not detecting the IDE drives even means anything. Maybe I never had IDE drives? I am a total noob in the hardware department.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Hey guys and gals. I was trying to backup some files (yet another issue). My external hard drive enclosure appears to be malfunctioning. Or it could be the SATA drive itself. You see when I try to turn it on the computer can't read it. Perhaps it was a power surge or something IDK. Does anybody have any suggestions or recommendations?

Tomorrow I'll try to take the computer apart and test the drive itself; I have a limited number of SATA interfaces on my motherboard and one of them is connected to the OS HD. I hope it is o.k., there are some recent backups I don't want to lose. Would be a pain to ask for those last few documents at work and rescan them. Guess I am going to need 4 external backups.

It is a Manhattan USB / EATA Enclosure 3.5 (large internal HD). Model Number unknown.

I knew I should have invested in 'more' storage . Well, my weekly backup was today even though I normally backup files right after.

I am getting an "NTLDR is missing" message on bootup, but the origin of the problem is, I think, different from the other NTLDR problems I've see on on this and other forums, because it is not related to the main (system) drive. In fact, when I remove the problem drive -- the E: drive, or in other words not the system drive -- the computer boots up fine. I thought that perhaps that this two-year-old disk was dying or that there were some bad sectors, but I've checked the disk for errors in Windows 7 (Properties > Tools > Check for Errors) and have found no problem. I've also tried different cables and SATA ports, always with the same result. Finally, I tried a System Restore. My other hard drives run fine. And the problem drive reads just fine when I connect it through a USB 2.0 hard drive deck.

I would prefer not to play with the Windows 7 MBR since the system seems fine when I don't use the problem drive. So here are some questions:

1. why am I having this problem?

2. Does a non-system drive have its own boot record or MBR that could be causing this problem?

3. If so, is there some way of editing or replacing it?

4. Is there any other kind of fix that I'm not seeing?

Thanks.

Hi, so I am using 14 inch HP pavilion ab154ca.Since last week, my hard drive started not working so I purchased a new hard drive(it was second handed) at just random electronic store.I plugged this new hard drive to my laptop. However, my laptop's manufacturer became Asus, maybe because its secondhanded. Also, my laptop keeps saying No Wifi networks found..I tried everything on device manager by updating driver, downloading HP wireless Lan software but there is no progress at all...I even tried to format this laptop but there isnt even such thing as Restore to Factory setting.I've picked erasing all option but still after format, the manufacturer keeps appearing as Asus..Can please anyone help me with these issues?Thank you..!

I just installed a new cd burner and now develop a major problem. I have an older computer 366 mhz, 128 mb ram and 4.0 gig hard drive. When I first installed my cd burner I had 1.0 gig hard drive left. After each time that I burned a cd I lost about 100mb of disk space. After my last burning which was not successful, the computer froze and I had to abort while losing my file. I lost 600 mb of disk space after this. I tried to locate the file but couldn't. I am in the process of buying a new hard drive , but how do I prevent my hard drive from losing disk space after each time that I burn. I have been burning on the fly so that I can save my disk space. thank you in advance for any help.

A:cd burner caused missing hard drive space

What app are you using to burn CD's with? Sounds like your application isn't cleaning up after temporarily writing the data to disk? Most burner apps temporarily write to the hard drive first before writing it to the CD since the hard drive has faster access times. Check your program settings it is probably listed there.

I'm not sure where this goes or whether or not anyone here knows about this. OK I have an LG CU400 phone, and the data cable for it. The problem is I don't have a program to recognize the phone so I can send stuff(ringtones, photos, etc.) to it. The cable did come with a disc, but the CU400 is a new phone and is not on the list for that CD. I also can't DL anything from the phone itself because somehow my plan doesnt allow me to do that. I've been trying to figure this out for awhile now, so any help is appreciated.

My daughter and her husband are moving to the boonies. They don't want a telephone land line but he needs to be able to FAX . Is there a machine that he can insert a typed sheet and put his cell phone on it and FAX?

A:Cell Phone FAX

Well, I have never used cell based broadband internet access......but Sprint and Cingular both have mobile broadband cards for laptops....

I would figure if they have cell phone service where they are moving he could use a laptop and an all in one printer/scanner/fax to send via the laptop and cell service.........

Without any clue as to model numbers, its a hard call to offer constructive advice, but the Palm unit will allow the export (from the PC based copy on Palm Desktop) of the addresses and numbers to a .csv file.

If your new phone has connectivity to the PC, then it may be able to import them, but that would depend widely on the model and your own ability to connect it to a PC.

Alternatively the Palm will usually allow IR (InfaRed) beaming of the addresses, and if your new phone will receive IR data then that may be possible.

Hello,

I purchased Motorola Phone Tools and a USB cable to transfer some of my mp3's to my cell phone. When I uploaded them successfully, the quality was greatly reduced and I can't figure out a way to modify them - it sounds very scratchy when I set it as a ringtone. I don't see any option that the program gives me to modify bitrate, etc (my friend uses BitPim which is not compatable with my phone, but his ringers are much higher quality). If anyone can help me increase the quality, I'd appreciate it!

some extra info in the "preview" section when I'm about to send it to my phone:

44,100 Hz
Quality: 16 bit stereo

Thanks!

Hi, I have a Motorola 815 cell phone with MP3 player. I recorded a cd (in MP3 format) to the transflash card. Using Windows explorer, I can see that all the songs are there on the card but when I install it, I only get ONE song.

I went to "change storage device" to transflash but hte phone still doesnt see all the songs that I can see with explorer.

Am I doing something wrong?

I do not wish to use the internet to fax.
Is there anyway to use my PC, tethered to my wireless phone to send a fax to a landline fax. Basically, can a wireless phone handle data exchange to another fax machine? Thanks, Mike

A:PC & Cell Phone = Fax?

Does your wireless phone have a built-in modem that supports fax?

Thats the main limitation.

But we have no idea what your phone is.

My Windows 7 machine fails to properly request a dhcp address but works with a static address.   Looking at the error logs I see the error message.
The Network Location Awareness service terminated with service-specific error %%-1073741288.
This problem started with a failure of the DHCP service to start but I fixed that by fixed by changing permission in the registry as outlined in this post -

dhcp fix
Based on what I found online I tried the fixes below - none have restored the Network Location Service.

Restored to a previous good statechkdsk sfc /scannow
netsh winsock reset ; netsh in ip reset ; reboot virus scanovernight memtest
The hardware/network seem fine - this machine is dual boot with Ubuntu which runs fine.
Any suggestions ?

A:dhcp failure caused by Network Location Awareness service failure

Run the commands
net localgroup administrators localservice /add
net localgroup administrators networkservice /add
exit

Then reboot.Regards, Kalyan.
