Windows 7 SP1 Upgrade - Stuck at Windows Desktop Update

Q: Windows 7 SP1 Upgrade - Stuck at Windows Desktop Update

Ok so I have a 4 year old laptop that had Windows 7 Ultimate on it. It is a Intel dual core computer with 4GB of RAM.
I left it over night to download and install the SP1 patch. I wake up this morning and sign in, it shows a black screen and in the upper left it has "Setting up personalized settings for: Windows Desktop Update"
I thought that this might take some time so I left for about an hour, now I am back and this screen is still there. I fear that it has broken itself and that it is broken. Is there a way to fix this issue?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can you open Task Manager while in that "Setting up personalized settings" Window appears? (Shortcut for Task Manager: Shift + Ctrl + Esc)
Then, you can terminate some processes that stuck Windows from continuing its work."Everything we do is dictated by motive."

I tried manually downloading those but the WUSA is stuck at 'searching for updates on this computer'. I've tried deleting the contents of the software distribution folder, microsoft fixit for Windows update, their troubleshooting tool(stuck at resolving) but nothing's worked. I dont have a restore point to fall back too. What dk I do now?
Edit: I tried running sfc /scannow but it's failing at 29%.

Hi,
I have a Dell Optiplex 765 that is stuck in the looping dots of death after a Windows 10 update that occurred in the last few days.  The first time that it occurred, I let the loops run for multiple hours.
I've tried hard restarts (power off), and that does not address the problem.
I've tried starting in Safe Mode, but apparently that is no longer an option on Windows 10.
Any suggestions for help are greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hello everyone! Sadly my first post here is written under pretty bad circumstances. I am one of the many people whose systems (in my case a Precision 15 5510) were "automatically" upgraded to Windows 10 without warning, as Microsoft changed the status of Windows 10 from an 'optional update' to that of a 'reccommended update'. After the installation completed, I was presented with the EULA and selected the 'decline' option and Windows notified me that if I continue with this option it will 'attempt to re-install Windows 7' so I did that. After supposedly re-installing Windows 7, my system restarted and booted with the Windows 7 logo but before the login screen appeared I got a blue screen and the laptop restarted. This subsequently happened every time I attempted to start my laptop, except for when I tried to boot in safe mode (which it did successfully). I restarted the laptop, pressed F8 and selected the Repair option and the Dell Backup and Recovery option after that. I selected the drive I want to backup (C:) from the menu and was notified to insert a Flash Drive or a SD card that has more than 43GB free. I inserted a 64 GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (SanDisk Extreme, which is meant to be really fast) and clicked 'Next'. Dell Backup and Recovery has since been stuck on the next screen which says "Backing up your data and Dell Backup and Recovery settings" with the progress bar just flashing by rather than actually showin... Hi all.
I tried to upgrade my daughters Dell Vostro laptop a few months back (free windows 10 upgrade).
Unfortunately it fell short of the full upgrade and rendered the laptop unusable. However, the laptop did return to a working Windows 7 (I presume Home edition - not sure how I can find out at the moment) for a brief period.
It then returned the reboot loop: Error 0xcf000000f - every option including repair, safe mode does not work and it enters another reboot.
I have managed to test it (Dell ePSA Pre boot system) and everything checks out ok (and I'm currently running the last of the memory test activity) but I simply cannot get windows to work.
The Laptop was either pre installed with Windows 7 or the disk has vanished over the past few years (relatively old laptop).

F2, F8, F12 options are not working (pressed whilst rebooting).
My daughter has a lot of her past on there (she never backed up unfortunately) so I'm at a loss as to what I can do? Looked in to Repair CD option, but apparently that won't work if Safe Mode cannot be accessed?

Apologioes if I've missed any info out.

Many thanks.

Seems fixed - not sure what the root cause was - but in case someone finds themselves in a similar position, this is what worked for me. Plugged in a wired keyboard and mouse booted into safe mode, disabled all services apart from microsoft and intel ones. Stopped all programs loading on startup including anti-virus. I then restarted and booted as normal (ie not safe mode) I could now run windows update, so I did. Had a little trouble restarting the anti virus service but did a repair from the add/remove program in control panel followed by an update. Enabled all the services and programs I had stopped restarted and everything now seems ok. Not yet checked with the windows update troubleshooter not sure if I want to do that or not.........

I had Windows 10 version 1511 installed on my computer already.

Today, the Windows 10 Anniversary Update arrived via Windows Update. It downloaded fine. After the restart, the Windows Update configured without problems to 100%.

During the installation after 71%, the computer restarted, and the blue Windows logo came up, with the dotted spinning circle below, and it got stuck at this screen. The dotted circle just keeps spinning. There is no hard drive activity at all.

I waited for about 45 mins first, and then I restarted the system via hard boot by pressing the power button for a few seconds. When it restarted, there was a message shown that "Recovering installation", after which it restarted and again got stuck at the same screen as above.

I again restarted manually after a while, and this time the message was "Restoring previous version of Windows", after which Windows 10 version 1511 was restored. So, that was good.

After that, to avoid any problems, I uninstalled Avast free antivirus, and other unnecessary programs. I also uninstalled disk imaging software like Paragon Backup & Recovery, Macrium Reflect free, and Aomei Backupper, just to be safe, since I saw some kind of error regarding Paragon software in the Event Viewer.

I let the Anniversary Update download again, and again, same thing happened... after installation at 71%, the computer restarted and it is stuck again at the same screen with Windows logo and dotted circle spinning.

Hi. I am helping someone who has a laptop with 8.1 who informed me they were receiving a message to schedule the installation of Windows 10 and there was no choice to opt out. She accidentally went to Windows 10 and I told her how to go back to Windows 8.1 and that worked great but the GWX kept popping up and she had to schedule again.

I logged into her computer and uninstalled KB3035583 as well as removing the installation files by using disk cleanup. I could not find KB2976978. Before rebooting it said Windows 10 is ready to install. Upon reboot in Windows Update it says Windows 10 has installed (which it hasn't) (in the listing of updates) but now Windows Update says Restart your PC to finish installing updates. We did reboot again but the message will not go away. When I choose Check Updates, it says you'll need to restart your PC to finish installing previous updates. I have the Windows Update setting to check but don't download, but I want them to be able to install future patches.

Any ideas to do a reset. Microsoft has a fixit program which I will be trying tomorrow. I know I can also rename the Software Distribution folder, but this person is very busy with critical work, and when I log in I would like to have all possibilities so if one doesn't work, I can have something else to try.

Thank you.

All my best,
Kathy

You need to post a LOT more info in order to help you.
Post ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact motherboard, exact cpu, exact ram, etc, etc, etc. If this is a big box system ie dell, hp, whatever, post the exact brand and model# If you have a service tag# post that as well.

What version?
Was this a clean install of 10 OR an upgrade from win8, 7, etc?

Welcome to Windows 7 forums.
The first thing is to make sure your installation DVD is OK, have you checked the checksum and burned it with slow speed? When the installation hangs halfway it might be a bad DVD. What version are you installing?
Also, try installing with only 1 memory stick, put the rest back after / if you succeed. Are you using > DDR2 1066?

I left my laptop on -stuck at 99% from 7p.m. until 7.pm. the following day and it was still stuck. I aborted the installation and tried again a few days later. I had the same result. Does anyone else out there have the same problem?

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance for any input!!

for about 2 weeks ive been working on rebuilding my computer, i purchased a brand new hard drive, and put it in, with plans to put windows 7 on it. however, i only had windows 7 64 bit which my system wouldn't accept it, so i had to use an upgrade disk that i had, to upgrade from windows vista to windows 7 to get the 32 bit. well, i put on vista, and then started upgrading to windows 7, it went pretty well, until i got to one step, which is this: "transferring files, settings, and programs", then on the bottom it says, "please wait..." and cycles to "installing devices and setting up your system" and that is on a loop, that goes about every 10 seconds. the problem im facing, is that it gives ABSOLUTELY no percentage, and ive looked multiple times on the internet, found alot of it stopping at 62%, but the solution for that is only if its at 62%. i found two threads about it stopping with no percentage but the threads offer no solutions... i dont want to risk harming the brand new system by shutting down or aborting the setup, but it has been like that for over 20 hours and i am not sure what to do. im able to move the mouse, and use shift+f10 to get the command window and use it so i know its not just completely frozen, but it just wont progress at all, anyone able to help?

What are the system specs that would keep it from running 64 bit?

You will not physically hurt the system hardware by shutting it down, in fact try just that and see what happens on reboot.

Troubleshooting:

Removed all non-essential peripherals
Deleted graphics driver
Deleted all old unused drivers
Attempted install in VGA mode (prior to this the best achieved was restarting prior to copying settings before hanging)
Repeated attempts (at least 5)

I've managed to install Windows 10 on two laptops (Toshiba Satellite L50-B-1HU with additional 8GB Ram, and a Sony Vaio SVE1511P1E with 256GB replacement Western Digital HD), an old desktop PC, and a Toshiba Encore tablet without issue (bar an ongoing issue with a Toshiba laptop that's affecting Ubuntu as well - likely HD related). All using the same Windows Live email login.

Any assistance gratefully received.

Hello all, I am new to this forum.

I have bought two new sticks of Crucial 4GB DDR3 1600 UDIMM for my Gigabyte GA-H55M-D2H motherboard. After the switch the windows gets stuck on window loading screen (before the logo even starts to assemble) and when booting in safe mode it gets stuck on classpnp.sys.

I have tried using the sticks in another rig and they work fine, I have also tried different sticks (kingston hyperx) in the rig and the pc had the same windows loading problem.

The bios version of the motherboard is F3. And the sticks should be supported. I was searching for XMP search in mobo but didn't find it. The RAM sticks are 1600 but mobo recognizes them as 1333 mhz.

I can't even load windows setup from a DVD using these sticks.

The rig works fine with the old 2gb 1333 stick.

Any suggestions? I am a bit frustrated, been trying to solve this for about 6 hours now.

A:Windows stuck on classpnp.sys after RAM upgrade

Go into BIOS and load the defaults. Make sure RAM settings are auto for now. Try and report back please. XMP may be in the same setting where you select Auto.

Since I upgraded to Windows 8, I am no longer able to save individual Remote Desktop Connection files as .rdp files. I am talking about the traditional Remote Desktop Connection application on the Desktop that was in previous Windows versions, not the
Remote Desktop App from the Windows 8 store.
When I try to click on the Save button I get "An error occurred while saving to file"
When I try to click on the Save As button I get "Unable to open connection file" with the file address being where I tried to save it with the file name at the end.
Also when I upgraded to Windows 8, my .rdp files disappeared from my Documents folder.
I need to create different .rdp files for different programs that my employees get into on my server. Now I have to hand type all the info each time into the Programs tap on the Remote Desktop Connection window, because I can't save to an
.rdp file.
I like the Remote Desktop App from the Windows store but it won't let me designate specific programs to use using standard dos notation (ie c:\program files\ etc..). It just goes to my server desktop.
I want to promote Windows 8 to my employees but I need either .rdp files for the traditional Remote Desktop Connection or the ability to open specific programs using dos notation in the Windows Store Remote Desktop App.

Hello all. I have 2 small squares of what I can only call "old and closed windows" that stay on my desktop and overlap any Window I open. If I reboot the computer, it goes away for a while, only to re-arrive when I come back to it a few days later. The only new thing on this PC is Magic Jack, that my wife added. I am at a loss as to how to begin debugging this.

I have attached two images showing my desktop and an open internet page.

Thanks in advance!

From what I could see, it looks like it's a website view source page.

Unfortunately, I cannot think of anything to make it go away. I wanted to mention what it looks like because it might help someone else figure out why it's stuck.

I tried defaulting bios, tried turning on virtualization technology, Tried all the restore the boot repair the computer offered after trying to boot several times, restore points are gone, I don't have CD's because HP doesn't send them anymore. I don't know what to do with this thing. Please Help.

It probably did the same thing to you that it did to me.When I attempted to upgrade to 10 it downloaded and tried to install 10 in the recovery partition on the hard drive instead of to system partition. I had to boot to recovery and use the Refresh PC then the Reset PC options.

I am attempting to do an In-Place upgrade of Windows 7 RTM x64 onto Vista Sp2 x64.  Everything seemed to go smoothly except that it is currently stuck at 62% on the last step.  It has been stuck there from about 5 hours now.  It goes between "Please Wait..." and "Transfering files,settings,ect.. xxxxx out of xxxxxx".  It will not progress at all though; it is stuck on a particular file. What should I do about this?  Wait 5 more hours?  Restart the computer and pray?  Any suggestions greatfully received.Thanks,Kenkanno41 :)

A:Windows 7 Upgrade From Vista to RTM not progressing, stuck at 62%

Hello,Just posting at the bottom of the thread.  This is for the 62% hang, this is not for the 63% hang, see the next post for 63% status
Symptom
During the upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7, the upgrade hangs at 62% indefinitely.
Note this issue is only for hangs at the 62%,
Cause
The iphlpsvc service may be hanging during the upgrade. This is one service that has been identified as hanging at this point during setup.
Resolution
Reboot the machine, this will cause a rollback to Windows Vista.
Go to the start menu
Right-click on Computer
Choose Properties
Choose advanced system settings
Choose the Environment Variables button
Under System Variables choose New
Then enter
Variable Name: MIG_UPGRADE_IGNORE_PLUGINS
variable value: IphlpsvcMigPlugin.dll

Then Restart Setup.
This workaround only applies to the iphlpsvc service hangs
More information
This hang can be seen in the setupact.log
With the following line repeated about every 15 minutes.

<TimeStamp> Warning    [0x080b50] MIG    AsyncCallback_ApplyStatus: Progress appears to be stuck. Current progress: 62
If this entry is not occurring in the log file or you are hanging at a percentage other than 62% this workaround should not be attempted.

Note: There can be other services that may cause this hang or this log entry. Thanks,
Darrell Gorter

Hi, I am doing an upgrade of WIn7 to Win7, to hopefully fix BSOD.  I have had the install hang a couple of times for a very long time, and I just want to report to other users having the same problem to WAIT! maybe even an hour. Twice it hung; at Expanding
Windows Files, and then again during the final Transfer of files, settings, etc.

I came to this forum hoping to find my answer, but I felt best to wait and it worked fine, just took a while.
