Preferred Solution: Protection software

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
I currently protect my system with Norton antvirus 2002, this came bundled with my system (Compaq presario 6000, XP home).

And my only firewall is the built in one.

I have adaware and spybot which I run, and I have just got Regcleaner (for better or worse!)

I'm sure this is not protection enough but I'm really unsure of what else to add, ask a 100 people and get a 100 differant answers it seems. So what would people recommend. I'm not sure in my Norton protects against trojans, is there a decent all in one protection software out there that will cover virus/trojan/spyware and firewall issues or am i talking stoopid?

I don't mind paying to get it if its good.

I use Yahoo instant messenger quite a bit too, I don't know if this is an issue with protection software or even if its sensible to use yahoo messanger in the first place.

Hope the above makes sense to someone, thanx in advance

Just as a general rule of thumb, assuming I'm not having specific problems, about how often would it be prudent to run my protection software such as AVG, Spybot, Ewido, and Ad-Aware? I know about keeping their defs up to date, and so forth. I'm just curious how often to have them do scans. Each one of them tends to take upwards of an hour per scan on my machine. That's no big deal, but it's not something I can just start and fuggedaboutit, so I'd like some opinions on how often to fit it into my usual routines.

A:How often should I run protection software?

Hi we all no doubt have our own routines of running scans...for me it's about once a week.

Is there a way, a software, whatsoever, to add self-protection to softwares who actually lack of it? Say VoodooShield. I find it a really good piece of software, but so far, has no self-protection, which actually makes it vulnerable to killswitchs. Are there programs that will protect other softwares?

A:How to add self-protection to software lacking of it?

I think it would need something like Veracode Runtime Protection
Veracode Runtime Protection

When a security event in an app occurs, RASP takes control of the app and addresses the problem. In diagnostic mode, RASP will just sound an alarm that something is amiss. In protection mode, it will try to stop it. For example, it could stop the execution of instructions to a database that appear to be a SQL injection attack.

Other actions RASP could take include terminating a user's session, stopping an application's execution, or alerting the user or security personnel.

Developers can implement RASP in a couple of ways. They can access the technology through function calls included in an app's source code, or they can take a completed app and put it in a wrapper that allows the app to be secured with a single button push. The first approach is more precise because developers can make specific decisions about what they want protected in the app, such as logins, database queries, and administrative functions.

Whichever method is used with RASP, the end result is like bundling a web application firewall with the application's runtime context. That close connection to the app means RASP can be more finely tuned to the app's security needs.Click to expand...

Edit:
After reading the forum rules, I'm not sure if this would be considered against the rules, or not. This reason for this post is to find out how to remove copy protection software from my computer, and the reason for this is that I want to play the CD from Windows Media Player instead of the horrible application that is now installed.

If this is against the forum rules I appologize in advance, and please delete this post.

OK, I should know better, but...

I recently bought the new Velvet Revolver CD from RCA (BMG). So I popped it into my laptop(running Windows XP Professional) at work, and it asks me to agree to some software licence agreement (looks pretty standard, like any other software install), which I do, and then it says something along the lines of "Do you agree to install this software on your computer? It contains important licence information that is required to play this CD... blah blah blah." So, silly me, I agree.

Apparantly, it installed some copy protection software on my laptop, and now the CD can only be played via this awful full-screen Web-looking type application. What irks me the most the the complete lack of mention that the software is for copy protection and makes it impossible to use normal media player prorams for this CD.

Now that this horrific software is on my computer, does anyone know how to get it off? I don't see any new installations in Add/Remove Software, and there's so much crap on this thing from work, ... Read more

I am currently looking at options for security for my computer as my Norton subscription just expired. I am looking at switching to NOD32 for antivirus. I've read on this website that Windows Firewall is plenty of firewall protection. The only thing I'm unclear about is spyware. Most utilities that I've seen (Spybot Search & Destroy, Super Antispyware, Ad-Aware Antispyware, and AVG Antispyware) have free versions, but have paid versions as well. What is the best route to take? Paid or free? One more thing, it seems some people like to have more than one antispyware program running? Is this a necessary thing? Thanks!

When you click more information a browser window opens and you are taken to www.microsoft.com with some stuff about windows validation. But nothing helpful. If you close the box the computer goes back to the login window. I can start in safe mode. Ran several virus scans with malwarebytes. Removed a few things. However no more viruses are detected. i have several programs on my computer (such as spybot and threatfire) that never seem to find anything when I scan. is it worth keeping, even if it never finds anything? how do i know if it really is protecting me, or just slowing me down?

A:unecessary software protection?

Threatfire, I would definitely keep installed. It's primary function is to run in the background guarding against any type of malicious activity, not as an on demand scanner. If you don't have PC Tools AntiVirus installed then Threatfire's on demand scan will only search for rootkits.Where Threatfire really comes into play is guarding against zero day threats or possible threats that your other resident security may not detect. So it is quite normal to not see any kind of notification from Threatfire. You can configure it to pop up a "security status report" every two weeks, which I believe it is set to do by default.I've had Threatfire installed for quite some time(years) and no slow down attributable to it.As for Spybot Search and Destroy, it's probably better not to use it's resident protection "TeaTimer". If you use Opera then the immunization feature, similar to that of SpywareBlaster, includes immunization for the Opera browser. For on demand scans, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and or SUPERAntiSpyware would be good alternatives to Spybot.

Hello,
Working in a local computer store for five years where we developed a system of cleaning up viruses for clients.
We use Avast, Avira, AVG, Malwarebytes, Kaspersy, and Nod32.
I found that Avast finds the most viruses out of the three free AVs, and coupled with malwarebytes pretty much covers my computer.
Now, First questions is: Did any of you find other AVs that are free and have higher detection rate?
What software do you have on your computer?
And aside from these programs what would you put on your computer to protect from misc malware? (spyware, rootkits etc.)

A:Best all around protection from free software?

Avast is a great program, and it can't get much better since it is free.

I personally use Avast, Comodo Firewall; and Malwarebytes & SUPERantispyware as on-demand scanners.
Spywareblaster is another great tool that helps prevent access to malicious sites/content.

I run firefox with AdBlock Plus, WOT, and SiteAdvisor.

Hello everyone so a question I have ands peobally others have is should we use exploit peotwxctrion software? Why should we use it? I have seen staff configurations and some of them have software that does include or is exploit software. Some guides involving layered security say exploit protection is important, but what if your activities have never given you an exploit attack. Wouldn't a software that gives protection from exploits just make the system more bloated or unstable at times.

What do you guys think? Do people NEED exploit protection?

(I know that !many other software encorperates exploit protection but I mainly only know about MBAE)

A:Should I use a Exploit Protection Software?

I would say yes, you need an anti-exploit program.
Because even if you strive for up-to-date software or OS, cyber criminals are clever and they are many. If many cyber criminals try to find a vulnerability in a software, there's a higher probability that it will be exploited.

As often happens, the new software you installed to enhance your web surfing experience, in fact slows down or even crashes Internet Explorer. And you home page is changed to some goods catalogue.

This all is most likely the consequences of installing buggy software, adware or even spyware. The worst thing is that it is next to impossible to completely uninstall that kind of software!

But now you have got a solution! Browser Sentinel lets you control what software can integrate into Internet Explorer.

Browser Sentinel will notify you if a program wants to penetrate into Internet explorer, add itself to the Windows auto-run list or change your home page.

Lots of spyware add themselves to the Windows auto-run list. This allows them to be started automatically every time you start Windows and work silently in the background. With Browser Sentinel you will always be aware of what programs are started automatically at Windows start-up.

Browser Sentinel lets you export Internet Explorer's integration settings to a text file, so you could share this information with others to get help if something is going wrong with the browser.

With Browser Sentinel you will finally clean up the mess in Internet Explorer context menu deleting or temporarily disabling useless or rarely used items.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware protects against adware and spyware. The Premium (Pro) version includes a real-time Protection Module that uses advanced heuristic scanning technology to monitor your system and provide real-time protection to prevent the installation of most new malware, stopping malware distribution at the source.I recommend using SUPERAntiSpyware Free as a separate stand-alone on-demand scanner. The free version does not provide real-time protection or scheduled scanning so there is no need for it to run at startup and waste system resources. This gives you another tool to use as a second opinion or in the event of malware infection where some of your tools may be disabled.I also recommend using SpywareBlaster and WinPatrol.If you have not done so already, you may want to read:Supplementing your Anti-Virus Program with Anti-Malware ToolsFor a list of other security tools and resources, please refer to:* Bleeping Computer's Freeware Replacements For Common Commercial Apps* Bleeping Computer's List of Anti-virus, Antimalware, And Antispyware Resources

Hi Not sure what happened to my original post, seems to have been removed for some reason...  Last week I purchased the above notebook, a HP Envy 17-N152NA, model N9Q54EA which both the store specification and the specification on the HP website say that the note book has HP SimplePass Identity Protection Software but for some reason mine does not...  I have looked in Recovery manager and it does not even list it to be reinstalled..  It does have the fingerprint scanner, and the biometric option in device manager and I can set up a PIN and then setup fingerprint in setting although that is greyed out as I have yet to add a pin. I have noticed that i DO NOT have biometric options listed in control panel which it seems it should, or would this appear when the software is installed? If I go to the HP Support and drivers page for the notebook HP SimplePass Identity Protection Software is listed, do I just need to download this? Is it not needed as it appeares Windows 10 will use its own method? or are the specifications incorrect? I suspect not as both HP and the store say it has the option and HP show the software to download. Thanks and sorry sorry for all the questions and if my original post broke any rules.. Hope you can offer advice (again) on all the questions above.  Stuart

Hello people,

I have created a game for windows7 platform and want to put it on the internet and on CD for a small fee. I was wondering if anyone knows a good copy protection mechanism which i can use.
I already found a few anti copy protection mechanisms, does anyone know these systems, or maybe do you know a better system instead?
- lockPE doesnt seem to work for me because it causes errors when I try the program
- the tool from logicprotect.com is way too expensive, i need something familair, but cheaper.
- exesecure.com offers an exesecure tool which seems to fit my needs but i cannot find anything about it on the web, has anyone used exesecure ?

Please let me know which mechanism you use if you ever did, I would like to have some tips.

A:Need copy protection for programmed software

Hi davidson and welcome to W7 Forums

You could try asking some gaming websites for advice on what they use. It certainly doesn't come cheap (as you have already stated), and virtually every method will be, is being, or has been, circumvented at some point in time.

I've just checked the exesecure site, and it does offer a guide on how to use it, plus a support and faq section. It would be counter-productive for them to provide too much information (and I'm not sure as to how much they do offer), as this would only help those who want to circumvent it.

Though fortunately at this time I see no serious outward infection symptoms, I have the following problems with my system...I have done several things to determine if I have a virus / malware in my system. I have determined two exe files that are known to be problems in Task Manager - wintems.exe (Trojan.w32.mitglieder and Trojan.w32.bagle) and an exe file that goes by various similar names to 4exhmunml35dl.exe and variants with different numbers at the start but basically ending the same way. They are put out by a company that has a file icon of MFC and is described as TODO:<File Description> etc. I noticed someone else had the same problem with this on December 24, 2007 posting in this forum, and was helped out by skyetsu (Richie). I have terminated them from running in Task Manager, but they pop up again every time I reboot. Following the advise given here and in preparation for this posting I ran the following cleanup programs successfuly - Ad-Aware and Stinger. However, when I tried to load Spybot I had a problem: it loads, but when the icon for Spybot appears on my desktop it is a generic Windows icon and when I double click it Windows tells me it doesn't know where the file to open the program is located. In addition and maybe related to that problem...Until January first I was running V-Com System Suite 7 on my computer and decided to upgrade to System Suite 8. In order to do that I had to uninstall Version 7. Then the problems started. Since then I have tried l... Read more

Hello,

Well, for some weird reason I can't restart the software protection service of my windows 8.1 .I tried to fix it by restarting my computer, however, that doesn't help. Reinstalling or restoring my computer isn't an option for me right now. After starting up
and logging in, my windows gives me warning that- it is unable to connect to a certain group policy of client service.
Because of this problem I am also unable to start ms-office related products.
Can anybody help me regarding the problem?
Note: I am currently using windows 8.1 core single language pack interface edition.

On a Dell computer running Windows 8.1 (all current patches installed), the SOFTWARE PROTECTION service has been failing to start SOME mornings when the user logs in. The event log shows "service failed to respond timely..." and it retries
3 times and fails. This is causing Office 2013 (click to run) to act badly, etc.

BUT.... it does not happen all the time. I tripled the service timeout value in the registry but it still does the timeout error. If I manually start it later, it starts and then everybody is happy.

It is NOT the commonly reported "Access Denied" error because it can and does run most of the time. This is one of about 50 computers (mostly the same) here and no other has this issue. I have scanned for malware and find none.

I am currently trying to determine if some other service is causing a general slowdown that might explain this.

Does anyone have a clue about why the SPP service will timeout?????

(All Microsoft licenses are valid)

This may nt be a question that can be answered, but I wanted to ask it to spark some discussion here. I need to get some anti-virus protection for a new computer I am planning to build this month, and I am wondering if there is such a thing as "the best program" to have. I see that there is a lot of freeware that is recommended here, as well as some software programs that need to be purchased.

Please help me make a decision on what anti-virus software to use! I have no problem purchasing a software package if it is effective and not bloated.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Woody

A:Anti-virus Protection: Freeware Or Software You Have To Buy?

Hi, this is a question that will be answered. A lot of us here have a distaste for Norton and McAfee products, for various reasons.IMHO, Paid products #1 kapersky, #2 bitdefender, #3 Nod32, #4 Panda, #5 Trend Micro. Free Products: #1 Avast, #2 Avira, #3 AVG (these all have active protection) Freeware Replacement threadIMO you must run an antivirus that has active protection. There are other Free antiviruses available, such as bit defender Free, but the last I looked at it, it just put an icon in the system tray, but still only had manual (on demand) scanning.

Hello,
Can anyone please help on creating good policy configuration(Software restriction policy) for restricting ransomware or other malware programs(executable) from running on appdata and user profile directories.

Also want to know how efficient will be this setup, as a second layer of defense in addition to an anti-spam mail gateway.
Any additional suggestions on the ransomware prevention mechanism are always welcome.
Thanks,
San.

Still waiting when the free version of zonealarm will be compatiable with vista. So what other free firewalls are there that offer great protection and monitors inbound/outbound traffic?

A:need a software firewall with great protection for vista

I don't think there are any for vista at this time, I would be interested myself if there are, but the other big name to watch at this time is Comodo, I believe they are getting closer as well.

It looks like Windows 10/anniversary update is not compatible with ESET32 Node 32 Antivirus or with Kaspersky. What antivirus program do you use that doesn't seem to have a problem with win10/AU?

I was using computer with windows 8.1 and everything shuts down and reboots.  I look at system logs and it states System unexpectedly shut down. Also Computer was improperly shut down.  I go to application and find entry Successfully scheduled
Software Protection service for restart at 2114-06-12T18:34:09Z.  Reason Rules Engine. If user has administrative rights there should be override of this since it did not show an error state.  Are they trying to make the OS less and Less useful?
I have a temperature sensor running and cpu was 60 degrees below max temperature.
PS last update broke my combo plug headset.  System has forgotten how to set the single combo plug for input and output.  I have a feeling it involves RealTek drivers again. It also affected Intel audio too.

A:Unacceptable behavior from software protection service

Hi,
Many reasons could caused the computer shutdown expectedly.
Was this behavior regular?
Please check if there any schedule task is configured to carry out this operation.
Run this command:
schtasks /query /v /fo LIST
If there is no clue, perform a Clean Boot to see if there is any third-party software conflicts.

These are the instructions I found googling my problem:

1. Type services.msc, and then press Enter.
2. In the list of services locate Software Licensing
3. Right-click it, select Properties
4. Change ?Startup type:? to Automatic, then click OK
5. You may then need to select Software Licensing again then click ?Restart the service?
(from Windows Activation Error, Error Code 0x80070426? - Microsoft Community)

My problem is I can't start the Software Protection. A few minutes later, it just turns itself off. So without starting it, I can't even change the Startup type.

A:Error 0x80070426. Also can't activate Software Protection!

Update!

I found a way to change start-up type by editing regedit.

Here's how:
ctrl + r
regedit
enter
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sppsvc
Double click 'Start' key to change value
Do the same for 'DelayedAutoStart'

Change accordingly:
Automatic (Delayed Start)
DelayedAutostart = 1

Start = 2

Automatic
DelayedAutostart = 0

Start = 2

Manual
DelayedAutostart = 0

Start = 3

Disabled
DelayedAutostart = 0

Start = 4

Now, my problem is that the service turns itself off automatically, after a few minutes. Someone please chip in.
