I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am running windows XP home edition SP 2, accessing internet via Road Runner. I upgraded Internet Explorer. It froze so I killed it and restarted again. It finished properly the second time, or so it seemed.

IE7 ran OK the first time. The 2ns time it froze on a blank window. No toolbars, no status bar, no nothing, just the frame and blank inside.

Other symptoms: Internet Options opens up OK from the control panel, and every tab seems OK, but when I go connections, LAN settings, the button shows depressed, and the thing freezes.

I can access the WWW without a problem via Firefox. Outlook sends and receives email without a hitch. But any program that checks internet options to see about proxy settings or similar, freezes. Example Intellicast and the Zinio reader. Example the setup program for Max Registry Cleaner and Registry Mechanic.

I ran a virus scan with AVG. The machine was clean. I cleaned up the registry with RegistryFix. There were a lot of lose ends, now it is clean. I ran AVG Anti Spyware. It has a residue of 45 tracking cookies, nothing else. I uninstalled Intellicast and the Zinio reader. Nothing made a difference.

Here is the log from Hijack This. I will be most thankful for your help in figuring out this one.

I have been having a problem lately where I will be using Firefox looking at a web page (one site it happened on is https://thankyoucard.citi.com/compare/, when clicking the different + buttons to view details) and all of a sudden the browser will freeze. The cursor turns into a hand, I can still move the cursor around, but within 10 seconds my monitor goes black, says it's going to sleep, and my computer keeps running. My only solution is to manually reboot it (I don't like doing that). I'm not sure what is causing the problem or whether it is Firefox or Windows. I thought it was Firefox because that freezes but I can still move my cursor (which would lead me to believe Windows is still functioning), then my monitor goes to sleep (as if my computer is off). Maybe Firefox freezes and then my computer does the same shortly after which makes my monitor think the computer is effectively off and so the monitor goes to sleep?

I am running Windows XP SP3 and Firefox version 3.6.13. Any more information needed I'd be glad to provide, including an HTJ log if that would help. I appreciate any help.

UPDATE: I just tried the website I mentioned earlier, this time on Internet Explorer version 8.0.6001.18702, and I did not have the freezing problem. This leads me to believe that it is a Firefox specific problem. Also, my dad suggested that the AdBlockPlus add-on for Firefox might have something to do with it. I disabled ABP and encountered the same freezing issue reg... Read more

Recently, my internet connection has been freezing intermittently during normal activities. The screen and mouse freeze and the screen totally blacks out. On occasion, it completely shuts down and reboots itself, but other times I am able to restore the screen by clicking and moving the mouse. Upon trying to resolve this issue myself, I thought the problem was caused by a download from an addon through Firefox. I completely disabled it, but this has not solved the problem.

A:Internet Explorer Freezes When Started & Firefox Freezes/crashes On Some Websites

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer. One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. You have a very severely infected system -- likely because of the lack of antivirus & firewall software. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallWe can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee it will be 100% secure afterwards. It has to be spyware or malware scan your spyware and malware fighting softwares. It has to be that i am 100 percent sure.

Other than that your CPU could be single clocked. When you run too many application and you mutlitask the information can be sent to the wrong places which will cause your firefox to crash.

I suggest you reinstall it, scan your spyware malware fighting software or stop multitasking if your cpu is single clocked.

Run Firefox in safe mode.
Start> Mozilla Firefox> Mozilla Firefox(Safe Mode).
If it runs ok, then it is an extension or theme effecting Firefox.
If that doesn't help, create a new profile. Uninstalling Firefox doesn't delete your
profile and Firefox will still have problems if it is corrupt.

I am running firefox 8.0 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

The enabled plugins are:

Disabled ones are:

Exensions are:

If there's anything else you need to know. Feel free to ask.

Hopefully someone can help me.

Hi everyone.

Whenever I use the Firefox Browser, (always the latest version), my O/S freezes after 5-10 minutes. I have to 'crash' restart the system when that happens.

I note that although I don't use Windows Edge or Explorer that Ccleaner has to close Edge to clean it - even though I haven't opened Edge - it seems to be always running in the background.

Could it be that Microsoft (who no longer offer browser choice as mandated by the courts) are trying to force users to use Edge?

Has anyone any other ideas please?

Can I disable Edge (Microsoft say not), if so how please? Will Windows 10 still update with Edge disabled does anyone know please?

Thank you for reading.

A:Windows 10 freezes using Firefox!

Just to note: a choice is available in W10 as to which browser you use. Most of the time, I use IE11. It's a matter of setting your defaults in Settings. Type def into the Settings app (available from your desktop searchbox, your action centre, in the start menu, etc.), and make your selections there. Once you've chosen your default browser, you can set your search engine of choice in your browser's settings. I use Bing because I like it. If you prefer something else, then choose what one you prefer.

Sorry I can't help with Firefox--I don't use it.

Hi, folks, I read thru many pages and did not see my particular problem.

I am using Firefox 3.5.7 (but the problem has occurred in prior versions as well) and running XP Professional Version 2002.

I host a private health message board on ProBoards for people with Multiple Sclerosis, and I store all of my emoticons on Photobucket. Some are animated, most are not, and I am the primary user.

In recent months, I noticed that Photobucket has changed its look, which I suppose implies a change to its format as well.

Problem: When I open Photobucket, 4 out of 5 times within seconds I will get that lovely little MS hourglass, and Firefox gives me a message in the blue bar at the top that simply says (Not Responding).

At that point it is impossible to force quit (CTRL + ALT + DELETE). I have to pound on those keys several times until the computer panel comes up, then access programs or processes, delete Firefox and ... start again.

Basically this means I can't use Photobucket with Firefox -- which means I need to find a new place to store images or try yet another browser. I've worked my way thru most of them, including Google Chrome, and prefer Firefox.

Anybody encountered this problem, or have a suggestion for me?

Many thanks.

Hi. I have been having problems mainly with my internet browser. I normally use firefox. I can only go to a couple of pages before it stops responding. Sometimes it crashes instead. I have tried internet explorer and the same thing happens, and chrome doesn't work at all.

I have multiple copies of wuauclt.exe running. When I restart my computer (by holding the power button because I can't restart normally), I have one of these running, but they multiply until I have like 50 of them.

Like I said before, I can not restart my computer. When I hit restart, it usually gets to "windows is shutting down" before it freezes.

Hope someone can help me with this. I just hooked up a new wireless router to connect my notebook to the high speed cable connection I have at home (a desktop is connected to the router by ethernet cable), but now Firefox stops working after about 20 minutes. After it stops working I closed Firefox, then tried to restart it but windows displays the message "Firefox is already running, you must close Firefox or restart your computer". Then I opened the task manager and tried to close the Firefox process but it would not close. At this point I had to restart the computer and then the internet connection works fine for about 20 min. When first starting Firefox the taskmanger says it is using 19892k of private working set memory, and when it freezes it is using 35340k memory. Things are complicated quite a bit in that since the notebook had not been online for over a month, once online I was prompted to update multiple programs at once.

Updates were made to the following programs: Firefox updated to vers 3.0.5 / Avast anti virus updated to vers 4.8.1296 (home edition) / Windows Defender updated, Multiple Windows updates and hotfixes / Zone Alarm firewall updated to vers 8.0.065. The wireless router installed is Linksys WRT160N. Hi, I’ve been having this problem for some time. The screen freezes and the music coming through the speakers loops in a stutter.
It mainly happens with both Firefox versions 2 and 3, usually (so I think) on a page with (intense/badly written) Java Script.
It has also recently happened when I’m configuring my Xbox to link using Media Center during the automatic step.
I believe this might be a Hardware problem, but I don't know what else to try. I have tried diagnostics on my memory as well as increasing my Page File size and disconnecting various USB devices.

Hi, I've been having a problem with Firefox for several days now. It freezes up all the time. I downloaded waterfox and that does the same. Do I need to update something? I also use Opera (no problems with that) but Firefox has all my links and I don't know how to get them to use in another browser.

Thank you

A:Firefox constantly freezes

To use your links in another browser, you need to save the links on your computer ,first.
This is how you do that : Open Mozila Firefoxand use this combination ctrl+shift+B to open your bookmarks.
Then click Import and Backup>Export bookmarks to HTML - this will let you save your bookmarks in HTML format.
Save the file on your desktop to find it easily.

Then open the browser ,that you want to use those links in, for example -Internet explorer.
Click File>import and export>import from a file>tick "favorites"... Then select the file that you have saved on the desktop and click- OK. The bookmarks will be added to Internet explorer and you'll be able to use them without even restarting the browser.
Good luck

Yesterday we somehow downloaded that horrible Antivirus XP program with the warning boxes constantly popping up. It seems to be gone(no more boxes or fake security warnings) - I think I may have taken care of it by running Malwarebytes. I also ran Avast antivirus(free version). Maybe it's a coincidence, but since then Mozilla Firefox freezes up every 10 secs or so and stays frozen for perhaps a half minute, maybe longer. IE runs fine, everything else on the PC runs fine. Any ideas on what I can do? I have File Assasin and Hijack This on my PC(from a different Firefox problem in the past) if that would help with a diagnosis.Thanks.EDIT: Moved from XP to Am I Infected, more appropriate forum ~ Hamluis.

This just started yesterday. Even after the latest update (today), the problem continues. I have Firefox set to open links in a New Tab. If I click a link on my homepage (Google News), the new tab opens then promptly freezes. Even if I click the + to open a new blank tab, it freezes.

I created a "new places database" (rename the files places.sqlite to places.sqlite.old and places.sqlite-journal to places.sqlite-journal.old), no change.

I started Firefox with addons disabled, no change.

If I right click a link and "open in new window", I don't have any problems. I did a refresh about 3 weeks ago (thanks Kaspersky, NOT). And slowly put everything back in. I didn't notice anything wrong until last night when I went looking for an addon at Mozilla's site. The addon page loaded fine, when I clicked on the install, it froze.

How about a Firefox Reset ? Hardware acceleration in options use to cause me an issue with opening firefox would be slow, either a graphics card driver update or plug in set to ask to activate i believe solved my issue.

This problem has been bugging me for quite some time and I'm really desperate to fix this. Previously, my firefox version was 33.0 and I've started to get some hanging and unresponsive script when I'm playing facebook games. Hence, I've updated my firefox to the latest one which is version 34.0.5 thinking it would solve my problem, but it is very much worse now.

It freezes at very random moments that I couldn't track what problem is it. I've resetted firefox, uninstalled and reinstalled back, start in safe mode, disabling each extension to see what causes the problem but to no avail. It even freezes when I'm ONLY loading a few (less than 5) tabs.

I have also did the following methods but nothing helps as well :
1. Updating Adobe and Shockwave Flash to the latest version
2. Option > General > unchecked the hardware acceleration
3. Disabling Protected Mode in Flash by adding 'ProtectedMode=0' to the "mms.cfg" file. (This solved the unresponsive shockwave script)

Please help me as I'm really desperate to solve this. Thank you

Reinstalling Fx rarely fixes anything, as nearly all problems are located in the Fx Profile, not in the program itself.

As you did not mention Hardware Acceleration, try turning it off, as that often solves odd problems:
It is found in the Fx Options/Advanced/General menu.

If that does not help, it is time to try a new profile. The best instructions are found at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a...ile_on_Windows . The site is being cantankerous as of this writing, so you might encounter difficulty in accessing the file.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox?

Another thing you may want to try is go through your add-ons/extensions, disable one at a time, and see if the problem persists. One of them might be hosing things up for you.

I needed to re-install winXP yesterday.

My browser again is Firefox 21.0 which had been running perfectly before the virus attack...

But today when searching with Google my browser freezes and after a while with some
patience, a small window pops up saying:

"Warning: Unresponsive Scricpt"

Script: chrome://wrc/content/common/scripts/bal.js:1190"

Actually I haven't uploaded Chrome... How can I get rid of this?? Is there a way?

Thanks already in advance for your help.

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion 553w in pretty good conditions with 768MB of Ram.

Anyway, I have the Lastest Firefox version installed ( and for some reason.. everytime i try loading a .gif image..(especially from sites like intellicast) It will begin loading it.. and before its done with the image the browser will just freeze and it shows up in task manager taking 108K of memoery, when its only one window open trying to load that .gif image

The .gif image is a weather satellite loop and it is rather big (1.8MB) but i still dont see why it would have a problem loading it as i have tried the same image with Opera and IE7 and no issue there.

Any suggestions?

Edit: If someone has firefox, you can see if it does the same to you.

I'm using windows XP 32-bit, and my system has 3GB of ram. Even when I only have 1 internet page open, my computer randomly freezes in the middle of a video. When I return to my computer 10 minutes later, it has restarted, or gets a blue screen. I do spyware cleanups daily, and my anti virus doesn't detect anything. I also tried a registry cleaner. My computer doesn't have that many programs installed on it. Is there anything I can try to speed my computer up and stop this freezing? Thanks.

how much free space on the c drive? are you streaming the video from online? If so, try another browser to see if firefox might be the problem.

My computer (Thinkpad Z61t) has been freezing at somewhat random points for the past few days.

I've noticed that this usually happens when I am using my primary browser, Firefox.

My computer will freeze sometimes when I am scrolling up or down a page. When this happens, my touchpoint feature on the laptop will stop working but the laptop's navigation pad will.

An attempt to access the task manager via Ctrl Alt Delete proves futile - it just returns to my desktop but a lot of the icons are gone.

I've noticed that Internet Explorer, which I rarely use, crashes also. It pops up with the "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close..." box.

I uninstalled IE version 8 and rolled back to 7, but the same thing happens.

Thanks for the help in advance,

I need help in resolving this annoying problem i have been having. I had been infected with a virus caused by Yahoo Messenger a few weeks ago. I have clean out the virus and malware thru various software such as SuperAntispyware, Malwarebytes, AVAST and MicroTrend Office Virus scanner. As of my recent scan, there is no indication of any virus nor malware exist in my system...i believe that. However, i am still having issue with using Firefox both version 3.0.17 and 3.6 and also the Internet Explorer software causing my WinXP(essentially my laptop) to freeze at random. It used to be just watching movie but now its like it freezes at its will. I have ran event viewer and i have come up with various error messages but nothing seem to repeat. I have error message from Firefox hanging to fault bucket to IEXPLORE hanging to Rundll32.exe hanging..etc...my computer has no issue in freezing when i don't run the internet browser...i am hoping someone on this forum can assist. thank You. Ill go straigt to my problem

Pc Spec:
1.8 AMD athlon
1gb of ram
Nvidia 6600 (128mb)
Sound card: Dont really know. Cant check it right now, because my pc is frozed.
Windows xp sp1
avast installed, guess wall.
So my pc freezes randomly. Not completely, I ussualy can do things what i opened before the freeze. For example use firefox and search internet, listen to music. But i can't open new things and when i try to open for example: My Computer the icon in the middle of the window pops like it's searching something. Programs ussualy wont open during the freeze . Furthermore, can't use ctrl+alt+del well i can, but it wont do anything.

Right now my desktop froze too...

Scaned for viruses and such. Used avast, spybot, malewarebytes. Every program found something but i guess removed everything. Althou, avast is blocking new files everyday and i don't understand where are they coming from.

Btw i booted into safe mode and i had no freeze. Well, maybe i was on safe mode too short. I just anted to tell this.

What could cause these freezes? How can i fix it?

Sorry for long title

A:PC freezes but I can use Firefox and listen to music

Several things of note. First it is absolutely essential that you update to Service Pack 3 because come July 10th XP with Service Pack 2 will no longer be supported. You need some serious updating and it may be a central reason you are experiencing issues..

Second, before you do the above there is a very strong possibility you are still infected. Go to our Virus and Malware Removal forum and read the 8 Step sticky. Follow it step by step -- don't skip any of the steps. When you finish post on that forum with the required logs attached.

Third, since you can boot into Safe Mode there is a good chance your issue is driver related, but unless the above isn't attempted you won't be able to diagnose properly.

Fourth, as a side note, you might want to consider another gig of RAM if your motherboard is designed to do so. XP and two gigs is a good combination.

Fifth, you mention both Avira and Avast. Are both of these installed? Please tell us all the security software you have installed and running in real time protection.

Good luck.
