Data Execution Prevention Stinks

Q: Data Execution Prevention Stinks

I can't open a installasion, it closes change or remove programs, it closes most of the stuff!! Even it's own settings!!! So I'm asking if I can delete the DEP. Can I?

Preferred Solution: Data Execution Prevention Stinks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Data Execution Prevention Stinks

First make sure you are installing known good software (not something questionable).

You can disable DEP for the software you are installing by going to System Properties > Advanced tab > Performance settings button > Data Execution Prevention tab > tick the button for Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select. Then Add the program you are having trouble with.

You can also completely disable DEP for all programs by editing the boot.ini file (C:\boot.ini) by changing /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN to /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF. You must reboot for the change to take effect.

I currently have a program which runs continuously on another computer. Every now and then, DEP will block the execution of this program while it is running and the inflow of tasks to be processed will continually pile up. If I'm monitoring that computer, I can just close the DEP message and continue running it without a problem but if I'm away from that computer, I'll have a large and almost never ending bottle neck if the DEP pops up. I've tried turning off the DEP through the my computer -> properties method already and yet it still runs from time to time when i execute this task.

I would thus like to receive an email (when i'm using another computer) when the DEP runs. Is there anyway or any .vbs or .bat scripts that let me do that?

Between now and when an expert comes along, I'll tell you what I would do. I'm not an expert, just a semi-skilled user.

Boot into safe mode and scan it with your spyware and antivirus programs. Then reboot into safe mode again and try a restore point from before the problems started.

I would try other things on mine, but I think it would be unwise for me to advise it to you. I hope that helps. It shouldn't hurt.

While Windows Live One Care was doing a virus scan on my Vista Home Premium system (Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop), I attempted to connect to the Internet. IE7 closed itself due to Data Execution Prevention. It was working earlier, and the only thing that I could determine had changed was One Care's optimization. I contacted One Care via live chat they recommended I clean up temp files and unload browser add-ons. It fixed the problem. When attempting to reload the Google Toolbar add-on, the problem resurfaced. I've grown somewhat attached to the Google Toolbar, but I'm more interested to know what the true source of the problem is than I am about getting the toolbar back.

Anybody got any suggestions?

Understanding Data Execution Prevention
Data Execution Prevention (DEP) helps prevent damage from viruses and other security threats that attack by running (executing) malicious code from memory locations that only Windows and other programs should use. This type of threat causes damage by taking over one or more memory locations in use by a program. Then it spreads and harms other programs, files, and even your e-mail contacts.

Unlike a firewall or antivirus program, DEP does not help prevent harmful programs from being installed on your computer. Instead, it monitors your programs to determine if they use system memory safely. To do this, DEP software works alone or with compatible microprocessors to mark some memory locations as "non-executable". Well, it is Windows Explorer that DEP warned about, so you have no choice as to whether or not to run it again - Windows Explorer runs every time you log in.

It is probably another exe that caused the DEP in Windows Explorer. If you did try to run a program just before the DEP message appeared, then I would question that exe. If you have doubts about a program, upload it to VirusTotal.com and let their 39 antivirus programs give it a scan.

Ok, for sometime i have put up with this, Originally every time i would up My Documents for longer then 5 Seconds i would get this error, then it'd close slowly, if i did this again before resetting it'd normally freeze my pc and i'd have to use alt+tab to navigate, and i would normally have to end the doctorwatson32 process to unfreeze it, But lately it has seemed to have spread to my Root file on my desktop, after i dumped a few files ( Not from My Documents) In there and the same error is happening there, So i grew sick and PRESUMED It was Data Execution Prevention Causing this, So i went to Control Panel, System, Advanced Settings, and Disabled it for windows explorer, But instead of Fixing this now it just does this.

I also attempted to copy my root folder into my music, and now the same thing happens there, (Note: The folder was copied, not individual files)

Is there a remedy for this situation, Any help would be greatly appreciated, This seems to be 100% related with windows explorer, as it even crashes whilst browsing files to upload in firefox etc.

I may have finally resolved a problem I've had with a program but changing DEP to protect only essential programs and not all programs. I tried it with all programs and inserted the wayward program as an exception but it didn't help. Once I changed it to essentials only, the program is finally working as expected.

What am I at risk for and are there other ways to protect myself? I use a hard router so shouldn't that act as a firewall?

Thanks,
Burt

A:Data Execution Prevention (DEP)

The main concern here would be virus infection, not so much hacking.
Just use a active antivirus to try and offset the difference.
Essentials still covers base system files though.

Are you using IE to access the discussion forum? There is another DEP setting in IE7. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Scroll down to Security > Enable Memory Protection .. Uncheck that. On Vista, you have to right click IE and Run as Administrator in order to change it, otherwise that option is greyed out.

Explaining my problem is sort of a long story, so I'm including what I think is most relivant.

Back in May, my 2002 dell with windows xp finally ceased to live and I purchased a new gateway hard drive. Everything worked amazingly for a while until suddenly every time I tried to open a link I would get a DEP error message.

Being fairly computer savy, I clicked on the annoying little message that pops up and followed the steps exactly. I went to settings changed it to turn on except for programs I select and added the IE.exe I've done this dozens of times but still nothing has changed.

Can someone please help me fix this?

A:Data Execution Prevention

Hi, the problem is not with DEP it's with IE so undo all that you have done in DEP. Then go to IE tools internet options advanced and "reset" IE. This should reregister relevant dll's, if you like you can do this manually, the manual way is much more thorough so is recommended.

Copy and paste ALL of the below into notepad then from notepad menu select "file" then "save as" in the save as window save this as IEFix.bat and save to desktop. Double click on the file to run (be patient it takes time if it hangs then close out and do it again). Reboot for the changes to take effect.

All went well until this evening when the same message appeared on the just-opened desktop.  Going back into DEP I found "McAfeesvchost" had again been put in the selection box  (but not  Internet Explorer) and I hadn't done it.  With little internet use left for this laptop, I can't do a major overhaul or even a minor one, but who or what could be changing the DEP selection?  And what is the worst that can happen?  I'm really curious.  Thanks for ideas.

Hi

I had to reinstall Windows XP Pro with SP2 in an office and every 5 minutes explorer crashes.

Data Execution Prevention
To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.

Any idea why this keeps happening ?

Apparently this doesnt happen when working on other software like Tally, Office etc etc. Happens when on desktop, browsing explorer, network neighbourhood.

Thanks

A:Data Execution Prevention

Have you updated the installation? If you cant browse the web to get to windowsupdate.com or something try going to Control Panel -> System -> Advanced - then in the performance section click Properties - goto the Data execution Prevention tab and turn it off.

Whilst DEP is off however some programs will not work so hopefully after updating set it back on and it should be right.

Hi
I was just surfing the web normally, on my Vista machine, when all of a sudden an error came up saying that windows has encountered an error and will restart in one minute. When i click OK on that, i get a little popup from the taskmanager, saying something about Data Execution Prevention. I didnt have time to read it, because vista restarted.
After the reboot, it takes me to the login screen, saying Please Wait for about a minute and then reboots again.
Now, however, it has decided to go directly to a black screen, without even showing the Please Wait sign. So now, i have a PC that boots into a black screen and stays like that until further notice from me

The good news is that i can still login through safe mode.

Can anyone please help??

Best Regards,
Yarob

A:Data Execution Prevention

Have you tried a System Restore while in SafeMode to a point just prior to the sudden event? If it restores ok but doesn't help the problem, another cause of a sudden event like that and still woking in safe mode is a hardware problem. Or, maybe an attack by some malware trying to get on the system, which I don't have any experience with so am just speculating about since I've never seen or heard of Windows rebooting because of a DEP event.

Hi, I have a customer's site where in the last two days, five of the PCs are giving Data Execution Prevention error messages. "To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Windows Explorer."
These are all Windows XP machines, with SP2 : have not installed SP3. These PCs have all been running fine for a year or two. No new tasks recently. I have googled and searched forums, but cannot find anything that seems to give a good answer. All affected PCs are running Sophos. There are many more PCs in this location which are not affected. I have run Spybot S&D, but this doesn't find anything I think is relevant.
I am suspecting some new virus, but am not finding any other reports of something like this in the last few days.
Does anyone have any good ideas ?

I am so irritated by this stupid program. I have disabled DEP, I disabled PAE which supposedly was a sure-fire way to eliminate DEP - and I still have programs coming up as stopped from execution by DEP! How can I permanently eliminate this annoying thing so it doesn't trouble me anymore? I run Vista Home Premium x64. DEP has never once stopped a virus, but it is constantly stopping programs I want to run.

Hello. My IT office has a client that is getting random data execution prevention alerts while browsing his explorer folders (local). Oddly enough, we were able to resolve the issue simple by changing his view preferences from icon over to list. I was wondering if any of you had seen it, and would know whether or not there is an underlying security issue I should be worried about.

Thanks in advance

A:What is Data Execution Prevention?

It what protect your files. It is what I was trying to tell you about. With the shock player in Vista. You can change the settings in it to allow your Itunes. This is why it it is throwing a error at you now. I don't really remember how. But if you read the help file there it may explain to you how to do it. This program here is what was vista downfall . Sense Vista though in 7 and up it has changed.

Hi this is Alex ,
I'm having these 2 problem from a couple of months with my PC and i couldnt resolve this
When ever i'm shutting down my Desktop computer, i keep getting this message as
"Data Execution prevention - Microsoft Windows
to help protect your computer , Windows has closed this program"
"Close Message" . as shown in the attachment.
When clicked on "Close Message" i will get that , "Windows Explorer has stopped working"
and again i will have to shutdown and then the pc will get turned off.
Second Issue :
The Right "SHIFT" key will not function when i want to use Upper case alphabets or when it use to Delete , so only "Delete" will work if i presss Shift+Delete....But if Tap the same "SHIFT" key 5 times , stick key options will come up and i tried turning off the stick keys but that didnt work and the left "SHIFT" key works fine.
I even tried uninstalling the drivers and it being generic driver it got reinstalled automatically but the issue remains
so i'm confused whether it is an issue with the key physically or do i just need to reintsall the OS(windows XP SP2)
I have Quick Heal Total Security 2009 on my PC , as i get "Newfolder.EXE" virus most of the times when a USB drive is Inserted , i got rid of that with Quick heal

>mine is Intel Dual Core Processor
>160 GB SATA HDD
>1GB RAM

i hope there will be a solution for every problem,
Thanks in Advance.

I have a strange situation involving some software by ULEAD and DEP...
I recently got an 'easyCAP' dongle for capturing video from a composite source.
I installed the device and tweaked its settings till I got it to work.
I play a bit of online poker and use 'PKR'.....when I run the app the program it now crashes and tells me DEP closed it....(It's always been fine till I installed ULEAD)...
If I try and exclude PKR, it won't allow me and says the app won't run without dep enabled !
So, into msconfig, disabled the ulead associated service(s) at startup and try again....no avail....
I uninstalled the video software and deleted its reg keys and it still didn't work !
So, I done a system restore as a last resort and all is well now.
To confirm the problem was related to this software I re-installed it and got the same result and done it all again !
Would anyone out there have any idea WHY some video capture software would prevent PKR executing ? (And a possible work-around) !?

A:Data execution prevention....

I have a similar problem in that DEP won't let me run my nvidia control panel and adjust the settings on my video card. I try to tell DEP to monitor all programs but this one, and it tells me it won't let me do that. I dislike programs that act like that. Intensely dislike.

DEP may be a good idea, but I don't think so in this instance.

I have AVG paid anti-virus and I scan with Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware regularly.

Hi bolitho!

Could you go into some more detail for us please? Can you tell us what version of Vista you are using? Can you tell me what program you are using to download with? Can you tell me the last thing you downloaded?

There are a lot of variables here, and before we can give you an answer that works, we have to know as much as possible.

Thanks!
