Data Execution Prevention Stinks

Q: Data Execution Prevention Stinks

I can't open a installasion, it closes change or remove programs, it closes most of the stuff!! Even it's own settings!!! So I'm asking if I can delete the DEP. Can I?

Preferred Solution: Data Execution Prevention Stinks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Data Execution Prevention Stinks

First make sure you are installing known good software (not something questionable).

You can disable DEP for the software you are installing by going to System Properties > Advanced tab > Performance settings button > Data Execution Prevention tab > tick the button for Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select. Then Add the program you are having trouble with.

You can also completely disable DEP for all programs by editing the boot.ini file (C:\boot.ini) by changing /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN to /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF. You must reboot for the change to take effect.

I am in school at Ivy Tech. I do some of my classes online. We have a web page and then a campus connect page that we go to for online classes. As I go to my classes. I am allowed to do everything else but to reply to discusion board posting. My computer states that Data Execution Prevention as stopped the program. I have called microsoft, I have called acer, and I have called the school and none of them can help me. Now I have gotten to the advanced performance options page to put in anything that you want to disable DEP for. But I can not get the web address in there correctly. I have put in Ivy Tech. I have copied and paste the actual page, I still can not post replies. Please help me with this.

Are you using IE to access the discussion forum? There is another DEP setting in IE7. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Scroll down to Security > Enable Memory Protection .. Uncheck that. On Vista, you have to right click IE and Run as Administrator in order to change it, otherwise that option is greyed out.

I may have finally resolved a problem I've had with a program but changing DEP to protect only essential programs and not all programs. I tried it with all programs and inserted the wayward program as an exception but it didn't help. Once I changed it to essentials only, the program is finally working as expected.

What am I at risk for and are there other ways to protect myself? I use a hard router so shouldn't that act as a firewall?

Thanks,
Burt

A:Data Execution Prevention (DEP)

The main concern here would be virus infection, not so much hacking.
Just use a active antivirus to try and offset the difference.
Essentials still covers base system files though.

Ok, for sometime i have put up with this, Originally every time i would up My Documents for longer then 5 Seconds i would get this error, then it'd close slowly, if i did this again before resetting it'd normally freeze my pc and i'd have to use alt+tab to navigate, and i would normally have to end the doctorwatson32 process to unfreeze it, But lately it has seemed to have spread to my Root file on my desktop, after i dumped a few files ( Not from My Documents) In there and the same error is happening there, So i grew sick and PRESUMED It was Data Execution Prevention Causing this, So i went to Control Panel, System, Advanced Settings, and Disabled it for windows explorer, But instead of Fixing this now it just does this.

I also attempted to copy my root folder into my music, and now the same thing happens there, (Note: The folder was copied, not individual files)

Is there a remedy for this situation, Any help would be greatly appreciated, This seems to be 100% related with windows explorer, as it even crashes whilst browsing files to upload in firefox etc.

Hi

I had to reinstall Windows XP Pro with SP2 in an office and every 5 minutes explorer crashes.

Data Execution Prevention
To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.

Any idea why this keeps happening ?

Apparently this doesnt happen when working on other software like Tally, Office etc etc. Happens when on desktop, browsing explorer, network neighbourhood.

Thanks

A:Data Execution Prevention

Have you updated the installation? If you cant browse the web to get to windowsupdate.com or something try going to Control Panel -> System -> Advanced - then in the performance section click Properties - goto the Data execution Prevention tab and turn it off.

Whilst DEP is off however some programs will not work so hopefully after updating set it back on and it should be right.

I had DEP enabled in my Bios setup, but have just had my OS reinstalled (Vista Home Premium 32 bit) and now cannot find DEP mentioned by that name in the Bios settings. There is reference to "No-Execute Memory Protection"-is that DEP by another name, and if so do you agree it is a good idea to enable it?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and regards,

A:Data Execution Prevention

Hello Roy,

Yes, that's just another name for DEP in the BIOS.

I think it would be a good idea to have DEP enabled to help prevent malware from getting into restricted memory. You might also consider enabling DEP inside Vista also.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi, I have a customer's site where in the last two days, five of the PCs are giving Data Execution Prevention error messages. "To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Windows Explorer."
These are all Windows XP machines, with SP2 : have not installed SP3. These PCs have all been running fine for a year or two. No new tasks recently. I have googled and searched forums, but cannot find anything that seems to give a good answer. All affected PCs are running Sophos. There are many more PCs in this location which are not affected. I have run Spybot S&D, but this doesn't find anything I think is relevant.
I am suspecting some new virus, but am not finding any other reports of something like this in the last few days.

For the second time this week I turned on my xp home sp3, got the desktop and then a dialog box that informed me Microsoft had turned off my program to prevent damage to the computer with the "host" being McAfeesvchost.   After reading several pages about the action and not really understanding it all, I did as shown.   Systems>Advanced>Performance>Settings>DEP to find the checked box "turn on DEP for all programs except those I select" showed  "Internet Explorer" and "McAfeesvchost", this was the first time.  I had not put those there.  I removed both, applied, okayed and closed.

All went well until this evening when the same message appeared on the just-opened desktop.  Going back into DEP I found "McAfeesvchost" had again been put in the selection box  (but not  Internet Explorer) and I hadn't done it.  With little internet use left for this laptop, I can't do a major overhaul or even a minor one, but who or what could be changing the DEP selection?  And what is the worst that can happen?  I'm really curious.  Thanks for ideas.

Explaining my problem is sort of a long story, so I'm including what I think is most relivant.

Back in May, my 2002 dell with windows xp finally ceased to live and I purchased a new gateway hard drive. Everything worked amazingly for a while until suddenly every time I tried to open a link I would get a DEP error message.

Being fairly computer savy, I clicked on the annoying little message that pops up and followed the steps exactly. I went to settings changed it to turn on except for programs I select and added the IE.exe I've done this dozens of times but still nothing has changed.

Can someone please help me fix this?

A:Data Execution Prevention

Hi, the problem is not with DEP it's with IE so undo all that you have done in DEP. Then go to IE tools internet options advanced and "reset" IE. This should reregister relevant dll's, if you like you can do this manually, the manual way is much more thorough so is recommended.

Copy and paste ALL of the below into notepad then from notepad menu select "file" then "save as" in the save as window save this as IEFix.bat and save to desktop. Double click on the file to run (be patient it takes time if it hangs then close out and do it again). Reboot for the changes to take effect.

I was working on my laptop and received an error message popup that windows explorer closed because of a trigger of a data execution prevention. What does that mean? see message below.

Understanding Data Execution PreventionData Execution Prevention (DEP) helps prevent damage from viruses and other security threats that attack by running (executing) malicious code from memory locations that only Windows and other programs should use. This type of threat causes damage by taking over one or more memory locations in use by a program. Then it spreads and harms other programs, files, and even your e-mail contacts.

Unlike a firewall or antivirus program, DEP does not help prevent harmful programs from being installed on your computer. Instead, it monitors your programs to determine if they use system memory safely. To do this, DEP software works alone or with compatible microprocessors to mark some memory locations as "non-executable". If a program tries to run codeómalicious or notófrom a protected location, DEP closes the program and notifies you.

DEP can take advantage of software and hardware support. To use DEP, your computer must be running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later, or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or later. DEP software alone helps protect against certain types of malicious code attacks but to take full advantage of the protection that DEP can offer, your processor must support "execution protection". This is a hardware... Read more

Well, it is Windows Explorer that DEP warned about, so you have no choice as to whether or not to run it again - Windows Explorer runs every time you log in.

It is probably another exe that caused the DEP in Windows Explorer. If you did try to run a program just before the DEP message appeared, then I would question that exe. If you have doubts about a program, upload it to VirusTotal.com and let their 39 antivirus programs give it a scan.

Boot into safe mode and scan it with your spyware and antivirus programs. Then reboot into safe mode again and try a restore point from before the problems started.

I have a strange situation involving some software by ULEAD and DEP...
I recently got an 'easyCAP' dongle for capturing video from a composite source.
I installed the device and tweaked its settings till I got it to work.
I play a bit of online poker and use 'PKR'.....when I run the app the program it now crashes and tells me DEP closed it....(It's always been fine till I installed ULEAD)...
If I try and exclude PKR, it won't allow me and says the app won't run without dep enabled !
So, into msconfig, disabled the ulead associated service(s) at startup and try again....no avail....
I uninstalled the video software and deleted its reg keys and it still didn't work !
So, I done a system restore as a last resort and all is well now.
To confirm the problem was related to this software I re-installed it and got the same result and done it all again !
Would anyone out there have any idea WHY some video capture software would prevent PKR executing ? (And a possible work-around) !?

I have a similar problem in that DEP won't let me run my nvidia control panel and adjust the settings on my video card. I try to tell DEP to monitor all programs but this one, and it tells me it won't let me do that. I dislike programs that act like that. Intensely dislike.

DEP may be a good idea, but I don't think so in this instance.

I have AVG paid anti-virus and I scan with Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware regularly.

I currently have a program which runs continuously on another computer. Every now and then, DEP will block the execution of this program while it is running and the inflow of tasks to be processed will continually pile up. If I'm monitoring that computer, I can just close the DEP message and continue running it without a problem but if I'm away from that computer, I'll have a large and almost never ending bottle neck if the DEP pops up. I've tried turning off the DEP through the my computer -> properties method already and yet it still runs from time to time when i execute this task.

I would thus like to receive an email (when i'm using another computer) when the DEP runs. Is there anyway or any .vbs or .bat scripts that let me do that?

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 531s, with Vista Basic Home, and Mcafee security. I have gone to the Dell website and Micosoft I can't seem to get anywhere there. I am having a problem with downloading files. In email (people I trust) or from the internet. When I go to download (save or run) the download starts goes to 99% done. Then I get a message that Inernet Explorer has stopped working and is restarting. Then I get a message that Data Execution Prevention (DEP) has closed IE7. Help topic is to change the settings which I have, still no help. I have aslo reset the Mcafee security settings, nothing. I have aslo reset internet security (under the security tab) settings to default. I also rest the Internet explorer settings (advanced tab). One more thing I just noticed is right now I try to open the tools which opens , but I can't open internet options. Hope this wasn't to long and drawn out. Any help will be great. Thanks Jeff

A:Ie7 And Data Execution Prevention

I've had nothing but problems with IE7 and Vista. Read some of my problems with red x's and IE7. Microsoft knows there is a problem but has done nothing to fix the problem.

With that said you might try something I did that seemed to correct my problems with IE7 and has bothered a lot of people. I would suggest going to help-typing in "turn off UAC" and following the directions. You can always turn it back on but that might just help you correct your problem for the short term. I have mine turned off and finally IE7 is behaving like it is supposed to.

One suggestion-As soon as you can, I would upgrade your Vista Basic to Vista Home Premium. Not much of a difference in cost but feature wise it is well worth it. Check to see if you have the minimum requirements to run Home Premium. You will be glad that you made the change. I have read that Wal Mart has made a deal with Microsoft (and I guess some of the computer manufacturers) not to sell Vista Basic in their stores.

Good luck and post back on how you are doing.

p.s. If it doesn't help, turn UAC back on.

Also, try to do a system restore back to when it was working properly. You didn't mention how long you have had the Dell but if it is under waranty I would call Dell.

Hi Sydoz, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It sounds like DEP is disabled. Check using this tutorial to make sure that it is enabled again.

For the other problem, you might check in Windows Features to see if Spider Solitiare and others you wanted are checked (dotted) under Games.

I've been having a window pop-up every hour or half-hour that says Windows Explorer is being closed to help protect my computer. It tells me that it's Data Execution Prevention. It will close explorer and then bring it back within a few seconds...none of my other programs close, but it's a nuisance. It will bring me out of other programs and slows me down a lot. I tried running chkdsk, but that didn't help. It only started just recently.

I'm running Windows XP home edition.

While Windows Live One Care was doing a virus scan on my Vista Home Premium system (Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop), I attempted to connect to the Internet. IE7 closed itself due to Data Execution Prevention. It was working earlier, and the only thing that I could determine had changed was One Care's optimization. I contacted One Care via live chat they recommended I clean up temp files and unload browser add-ons. It fixed the problem. When attempting to reload the Google Toolbar add-on, the problem resurfaced. I've grown somewhat attached to the Google Toolbar, but I'm more interested to know what the true source of the problem is than I am about getting the toolbar back.

Anybody got any suggestions?

A:Data Execution Prevention

Hello and welcome to TSF

Please do this:
Click Here to download ToolbarCop. Save it to your desktop.
Go to your desktop and extract toolbarcop.zip.
Go to the extracted files
Double click on Toolbarcop.exe
Click on the notepad symbol:
A notepad file should pop up, please copy and paste Everything from the notepad file and paste it back into this thread.

There are a lot of variables here, and before we can give you an answer that works, we have to know as much as possible.

Can someone please tell me if it is safe to disable the DEP, Data Execution Prevention??, does having it on slow the system down??.Thank You
Riptorn

A:Data execution prevention

DEP - Enable or Disable
it does not affect your computer speed...
it just marks part of memory by as no execute....

if a programs tries to access this memory then its shutdown...

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature that can help prevent damage to your computer from viruses and other security threats. Harmful programs can try to attack Windows by attempting to run (also known as execute) code from system memory (RAM) locations reserved only for Windows and other authorized programs. These types of attacks can harm your programs and files. If DEP notices a program on your computer using memory incorrectly, it closes the program and notifies you with the DEP stop error. DEP is ran in a software mode and in a hardware mode. If your processor supports DEP (NX for AMD, and XD for Intel), then you will have hardware and software DEP. If it doesn't, then Vista will just use software DEP. 64 bit applications will have DEP enabled all the time by default, but 32 bit applications do not and must have DEP manually enabled for them. For more information, see: Windows Help and Support: Data Execution Prevention: FAQs NOTE
If a program is being closed by DEP, then make sure that it is a DEP compatible version and check for an updated version. If it is not DEP compatible, then you can uninstall the program or turn off DEP for that particular program. See: How to Turn DEP On or Off for a Program
