Need Help Choosing a Computer case

Q: Need Help Choosing a Computer case

Hello All,
I have (unfortunately) an Acer Aspire X3910 desktop computer.
I have had it 6 months and it been in for repairs three times already.
One of the main problems I'm having with it is that the case is very small.
And the inside gets very hot Acer has hat to replace the computer once
and change the hard drive twice.
I was advised that I should change the case. However I don't know the
form factor that I need to buy. The information that Acer states is that its
a "Small Form Factor" but when I try to look for it I can't find that form
factor. Could someone tell me what form factors I can use and if possible
recommend a case.
Attached are images of the case I have and other information.

Any Help Will Be Appreciated

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If the case is SFF, you don't want another one of those, since that is the root cause of your overheating. Any standard ATX case will fit your motherboard. However, your current PSU might not fit, so you will need a new PSU.

Your attachments provide no useful info. Provide a link that shows the inside of the computer.

I have a G9657MA-8EKRS2H motherboard that I would like to place in a case to build
a PC. I have several old computers & cases that I have collected in the past. For example could
I use a Dell 3000 case for this board? I have several simular Dell computers with celron processors
in them. Maybe I could salvage a case/power supply from them?
How do I choose a computer case for this mother board. What factors do I use to choose a
computer case? I guess I need to look at fan placement and venting. Form factors etc.
What do need to consider here?

Thank you,

A:Choosing a computer case?

Dell cases are proprietary ie they fit dell mb. Choosing a case is a VERY subjective endeavor; ie what I like may not be what you like. Here is a decent atx type case that will do the job for you.

Here is a more high end case with lighted fans, etc.

Hi

Im looking for a midsize case. Smaller is better, but i dont want it to be too cramped. Looking for one that is either black, or aluminum and that does not have the cd drive door that slows down getting cd out of the drives. Any help would be appreciated. Thx.

You can always remove those doors. I have the Antec Plusview 1000AMG and it has the door on it but I just took it off.

I was just looking online for a case, as I am building a new system. However, after looking at several pics, I noticed something pretty alarming

This is the back of my motherboard (supposedly ATX)

And this is the back of a generic ATX case
As I was noticing, the connectors not seem to line up, especially the sound card. Is there a certain type of case I should be looking for, or am I missing something

**I guess I should add my motherboard is an ASUS P5N-D

I read an old post that said you can get a case for a hard drive (from a desktop, not laptop) and be able to access files (but not software) and a link to Newegg.com was included. I went to that site and am not sure how to choose the right one - do I need an AC adapter? And how do I know which internal interface I need?

The hard drive is in an emachines T3828 and is 80 GB, if that helps. My daughter had stories she had written stored on it - getting them off and ditching the rest is the goal. (The power switch seems to have died)

Thanks!

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270. When I press the power button, the power button light turns amber, I hear some fans spinning, and the CD drive spinning. However, it never gets to the boot screen (or any screen). If I open the case and press the power button, however, the power button turns green and the computer works fine (loads all the way up and functions like normal). If I close the case after it has started, it continues to run fine. I'm guessing / hoping it's not the mother board or power supply that has directly gone bad... but maybe there is a connection or something? that changes from when it's closed to when it's open. I've heard of something like... the motherboard is shorting out by touching the case... but I'm not really sure where to look for that / how. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

what may cause this issue ?

could be overheating CPU. Did you apply fresh Thermal paste to the HSF after reinstalling the motherboard? Is it tight and secure? Did you blow out all the dirt, dust and debris from the fans' fins?

I'm a user not a builder. I'm looking for a new machine that can handle beginner video editing plus all the usual things. I'm not an online gamer. I've noticed some systems for sale on sites like Tiger Direct, Geeks.com, Ubid etc. for $500-$700. Are any of these worthwhile systems? Can they be used as a base and upgraded cheaper than buying an expensive system? Thanks for any help.

A:need help choosing new computer

It's never cheaper to upgrade later, unless that upgrade is being compared to a new system purchase.

Stick with Pentium or Athlon processors. Avoid Celeron, Duron, Sempron, Centrino, Pentium M processors. For video editing, I would recommend at least 2 Gigabytes of RAM. You'll definitely want a DVD burner; I suggest dual layer capability.

Be sure you have built-in, easy-to-access card readers.

I'm not into video cards so I'll leave that advice to the gamers.

I don't like Acer--cheap stuff.

As much as I think Dell has the worst possible tech support, I recommend a major brand. I buy a lot of HP, Compaq, or Dell computers (listed in the order of preference). Off-brand build-a-box computers are always a crap shoot. You might get an absolutely wonderful system and then it might be a piece of crap and you won't know until it is too late.

I am looking to get a new comp for my office, but I can't keep up with all the different specs out there (clock speed, L2 cache, socket sets, etc). I'm not a complete novice when it comes to these things, but I can't tell the difference between what will be faster than the other.

I need it to be fast because it will be networked with 3 other comps in my office (this one will be like a server holding files that the other 3 will need to access on a regular basis). It needs to handle basic office software and some multimedia functions (digital audio & video) but I won't be doing any real heavy gaming. I'll probably burn some CDs or DVDs once in a while, but that about covers it.

My budget is somewhere around $800-1000, and I'll probably go through Tigerdirect or Newegg since I've had luck with them before. Any suggestions?

Hi,

I'm about to buy a new computer and some things got me wondering:
is there any reason of buying HDD with 32MB cashe memory if I get a bit cheaper and larger HDD with 16MB chase memory? what is HDD's chase memory responsible for?

As I'll buy computer without GPU card (I am not a huge fan of games but sometimes I like to play some old ones) what kind of chipset should i choose?
Is there a risk that some of the chipsets wont be able to smoothly play youtube's HD videos?

This is how far I got with choosing computer components:
Fortron 400W PFC, 12cm Fan
Western Digital 640GB 7200RPM 16MB Caviar SE16

In a bit of a dilemma. I currently own a six year old MacBook which is running great, but since returning to school, I need to (rather soon) install Siemens NX. This is a program for 3D modeling and the like. Apparently my school doesn't have Mac licensing so I can't use it.

Recommended requirements vary based on the software version (ie: NX 8, NX 9, etc.).

Basic recommendations are Win7 Pro, 8GB + RAM

As with any modeling or editing software:

Fastest multiple core cpu that fits your budget
64bit OS to support over 4GB of RAM
8GB+ RAM (as your budget allows)
HDD with enough free space to store all of your work (as you noted above, the 4 files you are starting with are quite large. so anticipate how many files you may have at the end of the year and plan accordingly)

I am looking to renew my desktop PC and also my laptop computer, but am working to a tight budget. I am looking for a bargain, while at the same time trying to remain conscious of the fact that I'd like to replace the equipment I am currently using with machines of a better spec.

My current desktop is a Patriot 5420, running Windows XP Home with SP3, with an Intel Pentium 4 processor 540 3.2GHz, 1gb DDR, 320GB HDD, 16x DVD +- R/RW (double layer) and Integrated SIS Mirage graphics. This machine is roughly 6 years old.

My current laptop is an Aries (Watford Electronics) Green 732, running Windows XP Home SP2, with an Intel Pentium 4 2.53GHz, 512MB, 60GB HDD, CDRW, DVDROM. This machine is roughly 10 years old.

I do not intend to use either machine for serious gaming, but would like to be able to play dvds without the picture being choppy. Mostly I shall use the machines for compiling web pages, uploading/downloading webpages, running applications such as Topstyle Pro, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash etc. I do tend to keep quite a few applications on the go at the same time, whilst looking at the web, etc. Sometimes my old machines tend to struggle with this amount of expectation, with the end result being that they can run painfully slow.

As desktops replacements, I have been looking at the following 2 machines:

I am going to install 64 bit Windows 7 on one of my older computers but I have not
figured out which one I want to put it on. Some of these computers have had XP and
Vista on them. I want to choose a computer that is a best choice for Win 7 & and I can get Windows 7 drivers for it. I guess it needs to be at leaat a dual core computer. Is a internet site I could find Windows 7 requirements for a piticular machine?

Unlike XP, Windows 7 is more piticular with actvation so is there a way to backup and protect
my inital installation in case Windows 7 & crashes or slows down.
Thank you,

A:Help choosing new computer custom build

Hi
I think the drive and peripherals are well selected, but 2g of ram and a dual core cpu may be in order. Newer games seem to respond well to 2g ram, and dual cores offer a lot of processing power without the price of a dual cpu motherboard.
If you shop around you might be able to get all this under budget.

I dont know a lot about computers so my friend is helping me build one. I just wanted to know what motherboard I should choose. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I was thinking in the range of $200-$300.

A:building computer and need help choosing a motherboard

Sorry, but you need to give much more information, like what type of cpu you want, amd or intel. What socket type? Intel can be socket 478 or 775(aka"T"). Amd can be socket A, 754, 940, or 939.

What do you want to do with this computer? Will this be just a motherboard replacement or a new sytem build?

$200-300 is a lot of money, many motherboards are about $100(usd) or less, with the performance boards reaching $200+. With $300 you can get a decent cpu and a motherboard.(like an amd 939 athlon 64 3000+ is about $150, and a 939 motherboard based on nforce 4 ultra would be about $85-150).

I'm preparing to buy an SSD for my HPE-570t One of the steps that one of the acronis Videos says to do, download all of your drivers from your computer manufacter's website. HP lists 17 "Original Drivers" for my model. My question is: of those 17 which are specific to my 570t? And should I be downloading the original drivers, from when I bought this computer? As an aside, I did have to upgrade the Nvidia driver for my GT440 , (from NVidia's site,) to get the "Nvidia Inspector" (a 3rd paty program,)  to work. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit Here's a video explaining the process. I hope that enlightens those who may need more information... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIl2L0OjZks Thanks in advance, Chef_D

So, I've been reading a lot of posts lately about people asking about upgrading. I've decided to make a small guide that may help people choosing components. It?s also written for people not sure what pc to choose, but also as an indication of what to upgrade.

The most important question: what do you want to use your pc for? Just as a desktop, for a bit of word processing, and be done with it? Or do you want to have the latest gaming rig that can handle any game at max detail, max AA, etc. I?m going to go into further detail for a few sorts of pc?s.

The Word Processor
If you just want to do some typing documents on your pc, read some email, browse on the internet a bit, the ?word processor? is perfect for you. You don?t need the latest core 2 extreme to do this stuff on. Basically, almost any processor is fine. However, with windows Vista coming up, I assume a lot of people will be upgrading to it. Therefore, the minimum system requirements(quoted from microsoft.com):
A Windows Vista Capable PC includes at least:
? A modern processor (at least 800MHz¹).
? 512 MB of system memory.
? A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.
Windows Vista Premium Ready PCs
Some Windows Vista Capable PCs have been designated Premium Ready. These PCs will provide an even better Windows Vista experience, including the Windows Aero user experience. Features available in specific premium editions of Windows Vista, such as the ability to watch and record live TV,... Read more

Hi,

My son has a Compaq Presario SR123ONX with a 3200+ AMD Athlon processor ( speed 2.20 Ghz, 512kb, L2cache, 400Mhz frontside bus ).

He currently has a VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP with approx. 64mb of memory, that came with his computer.

He is running WindowsXP SP2.

He plays alot of World Of Warcraft and Guild Wars, Factions and Nightfall as well as other graphically intense games and programs.

I would like to spend $100 or less on the best possible upgrade at that price.

I am overwhelmed with my results when I search the web.... so I came here for help.

His computer is certainly running well enough, only GuildWars is a little laggy, I just want to improve his gaming experience since he enjoys it so much and I am certain his computing needs will only increase over time.

I will greatly appreciate any advice.

Hey everyone! It's jsut a quick post, but I recently finished a brand new computer build, but I am worried my case doesn't supply enough cooling, but also don't like the nosie it produces during gaming, so I am wondering if anyone knows of any good cases under £50/$60. I have looked at the powercool dominator and am wondering if it will be enough (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Powercool-D...9?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1362519059&sr=1-109).

My build is as follows:
- AMD 8350 CPU with stock heat sink/fan
- Gigabyte 7950 triple fan graphics card
- 16GB RAM
- SSD & Hard Drive (not performance, but more energy saving)
- CIT basic case modded with an additional fan on the side
- ASUS M5A99X Motherboard
- 880w PSU

Thank you for any advice! It will need to have high cooling abilities, but also quite quiet!

A:Computer case for $60?

- Noise from case is 95% the fault of the fans. More expensive cases provide quieter fans, but you're paying a lot more to start with anyway. Plus, you'll have to provide your own additional fans in most cases (pun not intended) anyway.
- PSU fan could be loud..?
- Cooling performance is a combination of how neat your build is (cables etc), the amount of components, the type of cooling on your devices, fans used, and airflow provided by case. This is a lot of variables, so it can be hard.
- The case you linked is a budget case. Don't expect miracles.

- My suggestion - stick with what you have, tweak the fan speeds a bit.

Looking for suggestions for a cheap case (cheaper the better).

Must have:
front and back 120mm fan spots (doesn't need to come with fan)
at least 5x 5.25" external bays
at least 1x 3.5" external bay
Fits ATX spec

On a budget, so the cheaper the better. I'm just replacing the case, so it doesn't need to have anything in it (PSU, fans, etc), but must be able to put them there obviously. I don't have brand preferences. Name as many as you can, since it might be a problem getting them where I am...

A:Looking for a computer case

I found this as the cheapest with all the features you want, except it has an 80mm front fan and a 120mm rear fan. If you really need that 120mm front fan, this has it for about $7 more.

Please tell me if I waste you peoples time. Im a fan of building computer cases.
Now I was wondering what you people would think of a cylindric case? You know, that look like a bin (or a very large coffee tin) or something. Then you put the mobo near the bottom but not too close to it, put air intakes near it and one BIG extractor fan on top of the case. No corners for heat to gather

For home-made... if you know how to work with tools, metal, plastics, etc...

You could make one... doesn't mean it'll work any better at cooling.

There are round computers out there.

I want to run a computer out of a plastic bin. If I lay the MoBo and powersupply on the bottom, then duct tape all of the peripherals to the side... will it run? Would it do better out of a cardboard box?

A:No computer case?

It should work. Depending on the type of plastic you may have static electricity so be careful. It would probably run equally as well in a cardboard box. Honestly though, why not just buy an inexpensive case? Even the cheapest case would be better than a plastic bin or a cardboard box.

I have a A7N8XE-Deluxe Mobo, and I would like to get a new case for it with more fans and better airflow since I overclocked the CPU in it. I have found several ATX cases, but the back doesn't match what mine does currently. How do I get the right case with access to all the ports in the back, like my four USB and two Ethernet ports. The cases I have looked at don't have spaces for those. Do I just rip out the whole back part of the case or is there a way to find the case I need that will provide access to all my ports on the back? Thanks for help in advance.

Hello everyone, I'm looking to buy a new computer case tomorrow for my PC because I'm getting worried by all the clutter. Everything is too close for comfort. Lol. Now I've heard that the most "scary", or worrisome, thing is taking out the mobo itself because of the static and all. Um, I'm in need of some Windows 7 Jedi guidance from you guys. Tell me what you guys need so I can post my specs so you can help me out further. Thanks.

If you are worried about the static when you buy/order your new case pick up a 2-5 dollar static wristband. they connect to your wrist then ground to the pc

I recently changed my computer case and after some struggles successfully moved all the hardware from my old case to the new one. It's a P4-1.7, DVD, CD, Nvidia GeForce FX 5600, Sound Blaster Audigy 2. The thing is, when I power the computer up I get no picture on my screen, so I'm wondering if it just has to do with the screen or the computer is just powering up and not actually turning on. Could someone please help me, I think it might have to do with how I connected the wiring to do with the hard drive, CD, and DVD.

Disconnect everything except the processor, video card, memory, and floppy. Try and boot it and see if it posts with video. If it does just start adding one device at a time back
