Why Does Uninstall / Reinstall a Device Driver via Device Manager Fix Problems

Q: Why Does Uninstall / Reinstall a Device Driver via Device Manager Fix Problems

Not sure which forum category I should use, thus using software (for Driver Problems).  Various times to fix a device you can go into Device Manager  and uninstall the driver, go to top of page click on Actions and click on Search For New Devices.  I am under the impression this will uninstall the device driver, then reinstall the exact same driver (code).  Why does this work?  It appears that the exact same code is now reinstalled and many times fixes a problem.  I have used this technique on mouse driver, internet driver, keyboard driver.  THis is a good and easy first process to try and make a quick fix.

Again, I am just trying to figure out why it works - I know I am missing something.  As an ex-programmer trying to figure out why the same code now will work when it had stopped working.

Why or under what circumstances does the driver code stop working, and then why does a reinstall of it at times lets it start working again.

The AUDIO FADE PROBLEM is an issue with this laptop and I am wondering if it is related to the above.
I have upgraded to the latest BIOS and drivers using the Dell Product Support pages.
Every other day I have to reinstall the Realtek Audio Device to get audio from streaming media.
The current Driver Version is 6.0.1.7908 from Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Date 12/08/2016 which is what it defaults to upon reinstall.
I suspect that for whatever reason Dell has not yet come up with a fix. Has it something to do with the fact that although I bought the laptop new, it had been upgraded from Windows 8 to 10? (A fact that I only discovered later)

On my X1 Extreme (20MF000CUS) I recently noticed that when I open the Windows 10 Device Manager the list of devices keeps refreshing, like a new hardware scan is being forced every 2-3 seconds. I started disabling all the devices one by one and I finally narrowed down the culprit: USB Connect Managers -> UCM-UCSI ACPI Device  (Hardware Id: ACPI\VEN_USB&DEV_C000) This device, when active, keeps appearing and disappearing from the device manager tree forcing a refresh every few seconds. And it only happens when my Lenovo Thunderbolt Dock (40AN0230US) is connected. When I disconnect the dock the driver stops disappearing and becomes stable. Opening the driver Properties -> Details I get: Status: 01802400 (DN_HAS_PROBLEM)Problem code: 00000016 Any idea what is going on?

Hello,
My integrated speakers and audio port do not seem to be working. It happened after I was playing around with bluetooth trying to get that to work. Now only bluetooth is able to connect.
So far I have tried:
System restore
Deleting and redownloading audio drivers
Adding legacy hardware for Realtek
ePSA test was able to hear the tones
The audio logo has a red X through it and only the bluetooth headphones drivers appear in device manager. Any ideas what might be the issue and how to solve them?

Hi,

On a fresh clean Windows 8 image, my software driver (signed) installs fine and shows up properly in the Device Manager. However once i uninstall it , subsequent reinstalls show up as 'Unknown Device' in the Device Manager.

From the device details, I find that it refers to /looks for the .inf file in c:\windows\inf folder but the file itself is missing from the location. The FileRepository has all the required files. But trying to update from there also fails.

Could anyone help me with troubleshooting this problem. What could be going wrong.

Thx,
Gita

Folks

Rather new here but hope some one has a bright idea on the following

I have a IBM T41 laptop , it was ruining so slow suspect malware
So decided to re-install from IBM CD's Windows XP Pro
This machine has never been re-installed before

Every time I boot up it looks like the Device Manager starts up and never finishes what it is trying to do.

The problem is that none of my USB 2 devices work e.g external HDD

I have uninstalled all the USB devices and reboot.
When I come back in to System Manager they are all Yellow ?

I can select each one and install driver , which seems to work for things like
Keyboards / Mice but none of the USB 2 devices.

Apart from that machine has latest Windows Patchs e.g SP3 + others
I have installed all the latest drives from IBM T41 web site e.g chipset

But still no joys.

Any clue on how to go about fixing this.

Thanks in advance

Hopefully the title helps. (I don't really know much about computers)

I have a windows 8.1 HP laptop, 64-bit operating system. When I first got the laptop, my webcam was working fine, then I guess I was trying to get rid of it and I accidentally uninstalled it somehow. Now that I need it, I don't know how to get it back up and running.

I tried contacting HP support , but they wanted to charge an arm and a leg before they could help me. I looked it up online and a article told me to find my driver in the Device Manager under "Imaging" I believe. (I forgot the name of the article)But I don't even see that "webcam" option in the Device Manager anymore. The article then told me to go to my HP Recovery Manager, I clicked the " I need Immediate help" box, then I chose the first option "Drivers and Applications reinstall.", Well I did that then checked the box that I wanted to reinstall, which was "CyberLink YouCam Version: 5.0.3 3907" . It installed and the "Device Manager" reloaded itself , Then the the HP Recovery told me to close all my apps and reboot my system. Well I shut the computer down the first time. But that didn't work. When I clicked on my webcam it still told me "Warning, WebCam not detected". It's starting to get frustrating

I've restarted the process over and over again but it still refuses to work... at a loss, Please help

I accidently un-installed the Bluetooth device driver from my computer. Im using LG ultrabook with windows 8.1 installed. is there any way to re-install the Bluetooth driver?

A:Accidently uninstall bluetooth device manager

Open Device Manager, then right click on <computername> at the very top and select 'Scan for hardware changes' from the context menu.

Failing that, go to View > Show Hidden Devices, then look for any residual Bluetooth devices. If there are any, remove them all. Right click on each and select Uninstall. Once their all removed, click 'Scan for hardware changes'

Alternatively, visit the LG Driver Downloads page and download the Bluetooth drivers for your specific model. Make sure the model number is correct to the letter.

The problem: I had a video capture card/ tv tuner installed in my pc. At the time i had windows xp pro sp2.
I formatted my pc and installed windows xp Media center edition.
when i tried to install my capture card it wouldnt work.
It read the plug n play, it installed the drivers but when i went to any program to capture video, it wouldnt read it.

So i thought my card had fried, as i did fine a small burn mark on the silver strip on the back of the card.
No problem, i ordered a brand new one.
Only to find im having the same issue, Its installed but when i go to windows movie maker, it says the hardware is in use already when it is not.
WinDVR that came with my card just shows TV fuzz.

the problem i think it is, Is that theres another card supposedly installed on the PC that isnt there.

in widows movie maker when i choose to capture video im givin the option between two cards.

Card 1: PCI TV TUNER PCI 2309 (This is my new card that i just installed)

card 2: BT878 VfW to WDM Mapper

now when choosing card one, It doesnt give any options in the drop down box for video source. and it says the hardware is in use after i click next a couple times.

When i click card 2 i get an instand error just by clicking it.

Hi,

I am using windows98.
I bought a Aureal vortex SQ 2500 sound card.

It started giving a lot of problem, like sometimes the sound will appear and sometimes it will not.

On surfing through the internet i found that this because the earler driver wasn't uninstalled properly and I did the following.

1)Removed DOS loading Statement for the sound Card in the Autoexec.bat!

2) UNINSTALLED the previous drivers in Windows using add/remove programs!

3) Deleted the following Files:

C:\Windows\Inf\au30mult.inf
C:\Windows\Inf\au30port.inf
C:\Windows\Inf\au30mmed.inf
C:\Windows\Inf\au30comm.inf

4) In Device Manager removed the Aureal Sound Card & Then Rebooted.

Also in startup(ie blue screen appearing on pressing delete) I disabled the Joystickor gameport Option.

When I rebooted indeed the message came" new multimediaPCI device found" and it asked for the installing software twice. I don't know whether it is the reason or not windows didn't boot properly. In safe mode I uninstalled everything and booted.

Now this time" new multimediaPCI device found" didn't come. Only"new wave device for modem found"came.

On going to safe mode again I went to device manager and here I found my PCI card under unknown devices. Earlier it was appearing under Multifunction Adapter category.still i removed it from that category

A:how to uninstall sound card that doesn't appear on device manager

to see it listed under other devices is no problem. on detection, choose from a list of
devices to select sound and game there. in device manager in the sound catagory, you
can right click the device listed as your card and choose update driver. this will allow a
search for the correct one.

on doing this, choose the i will select option to go to the correct drivers you have. in
the search there, one driver will be highlighted when you reach the place on hard drive
or removeable media where they are located. click ok there. windows will install them.

you want the card listed in the sound devices catagory. that is where it supposed to
be upon a good installation. if you are unsure, boot to safe mode and uninstall devices
listed there referring to the au8330. upon a reboot, windows should have a new detect
on your sound card. let windows take the new drivers you found for 98. upon reaching
the desktop you should hear a wav file if one is assigned for windows startup.

if this sound is now heard, proceed to install the sound card software. this will install a
full driver set. when working properly, go back to device manager and see if the modem
is listed there. if you have no modem, right click on it to choose the uninstall. try this
and post results if you continue to have difficulty. the new device listed is not absolute
for your device on bootup. remember to search for the correct drivers.

Hi,

I did recently a clean W10 install and there are, of course, issues. My flight stick X52 Pro crashes the PC immediately when it is plugged in (BSOD) and I have no idea why. Saitek is a notoriously incapable of producing good drivers for their products, so even when I installed theirs drivers I got a BSOD. Saitek's uninstall guide for this specific product says I should remove all programmable support entries from the device manager. Which gets us to my problem: I can't remove two entries from programmable support in device manager (Programmable Hotkeys and Programmable Root Enumerator) because device manager freezes when uninstalling or disabling them. How can I uninstall them?!

I am also suspect of my Windows USB drivers. I installed my 3.0 driver from my motherboard manufacturer which, in theory, it should be fine, yet when I plug the X52 Pro in one of the normal USB ports it is not recognized by the windows.

Also, after the fresh installation a new drive F appeared in my explorer. It is empty, I can access it, but I have no idea why it is there. In disk management it is described as a 450MB NTFS drive (Healthy Primary Partition). What is that and how do I get rid of it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

A:Device Manager Freezes + Uknown drive F after uninstall

I don't know about those drivers, I have different model but you can safely remove letter for that partition. If it's after C:/ it's most probably restore partition. Just to be sure, can you post a picture of Disk management ?

The computer is an older P4 machine running WinXP w/ AT&T DSL internet service. My brother hooked up an old wireless-g router, but he didn't know how to configure it and the computer lost internet access. I removed the router and hooked the DSL modem directly to the computer like it was before.

Since then, the computer takes a long time to boot up. It's like it's searching for a hardware device that is no longer installed. Also, the internet download speeds are painfully slow. I tried speedtest.net and got 238ms ping and 0.11Mbps. By my math, that's 14KB/s. Previously, download speed was usually around 150KB/s.

I went into the Device Manager and saw that there were several conflicts for the network adapter. I tried uninstalling them, but it fails -- even in Safe Mode. They are disabled though. There is also an entry for a RAID controller that does not exist (unless it's built into the mobo). I can uninstall that, but it tries to reinstall when the computer is rebooted.

So it seems to me that there are remnants of the router's software/driver installation that I can't get rid of. I also tried Add/Remove Programs to see if there is a router setup program, but I didn't find anything.

Hello folks.

In Windows Home Premium 64bit we encounter this problem on a machine after trying to uninstall a norton product manually.

The norton software led to serious problems of randomly emerging BSODs.

As system uninstall did not work we researched a tutorial on how to manually uninstall the soft.

It can be found here:

Enterprise Support - Symantec Corp. - How to manually uninstall the Symantec Endpoint Protection client from Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 2008 R2 64-bit

Everything worked smoothly until the last three steps of the routine failed (12.-14.):

We can not uninstall/delete the wireless network adapters as described. After clicking "uninstall" there is the window that asks for confirmation (to uninstall) but after clicking "yes" the device manager window simply refreshes - and the device remains unchanged.

Disabling the affected devices does not help either since we get a "limited connectivity" error when trying to connect to our router.

Any help would be highly appreciated!

Thanks so much.

Jordan

A:Unable to uninstall wireless network adapters from device manager.

Wow, Norton is such a mess. I can never recommend anyone use their crappy software.

Try manually uninstalling the driver with the following steps:
Click the Start Orb, and in the search type "view net connections" and hit enter.
Find the wireless adapter you need to remove and right click it and click Properties.
Click the Driver tab.
Click the Uninstall button

Let me know if that works.

I bought a Dell Inspiron 1501 2 months ago as a basic, wireless enabled laptop (Internet, Office 2000 work only). It came with Vista (no choice!). Hated Vista. To get rid of it I formatted the HD and put back XP Pro. All OK BUT no "Other devices" were installed. When I try to install manally, the wizard refuses to recognise (a) original Dell driver disc, (b) downloaded drivers from Dell website either burned onto a CD, on a USB stick or copies onto Desktop. The "OK" button is greyed out when any of these locations is chosen during driver installation. The wizard also does not show driver files in these locations. Cannot connect to internet as one of the bits of hardware without driver is Network controller. I am probably being an idiot but how do I get out of this Catch 22? I REALLY do not want to re-install Vista.

For six months or so, I've had a problem where my laptop's audio will stop working. The red "X" appears over the volume icon in the system tray and audio will not function whatsoever. Until now, rebooting has been 99% successful at restoring the audio until it eventually fails again. But in the last three days, my normal quick fix no longer does the trick. Apparently my laptop can no longer find the actual Conexant 20672 SmartAudio HD hardware on the motherboard. This is a T520 laptop running Win 7 with SP1. The T520 is roughly six years old, so I realize the hardware's age might be a factor. There are definitely other issues related to its age (general performance sluggishness, inability to wake up from sleep mode, backup no longer works correctly) and I will eventually have to replace the laptop. But in the meantime, solving this persistent audio issue will buy me at least a few more months, so it's worth fixing to me. I've found dozens of threads that suggest reinstalling the device drivers, which of course I have tried several times using the drivers here. The problem: After rebooting, the device manager still doesn't list any playback device ("No audio devices are installed") even with both "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" checked. Similarly, when I run the 8aad14ww.exe device installer, it terminates with an error message ("Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the device for this driver").  Has the hardware itself ac... I accidentally deleted the Bluetooth driver in my device manager. It shows up in the hidden devices, and I've scanned hardware or what not, but I cannot get it to work or even the option to connect in settings.  Dell Inspiron 17 Series 7000 - 7737 is
the model number of my laptop I believe.  I am running Windows 10.  Please help.  I really enjoy listening to my music.

Hello,
I have a DELL Inspiron 5520 and yesterday i noticed that the Intel Management Engine Interface Driver has a yellow exclamation mark in the Device Manager and when i right clicked on it to see properties i found out that it has Error Code 10. I tried the following steps but none of them has worked for me :
1- I tried uninstalling that driver from device manager and reinstalling it but this didn't work.
2- I tried flashing the BIOS from version A11 to A14 and then doing Step 1. The problem still persists.
3- I tried Step 2 and 1 but with the latest IMEI driver from Dell Drivers page for my laptop model. Same problem.
4- I tried doing a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit and installing all the latest drivers in the proper order but that also didn't solve the problem.
The weird thing is, when i restart the laptop and get in Windows, everything goes normal and Device Manager shows no problems but when i completely turn off my laptop and turn it on again after a couple of hours, the exclamation mark appears again in IMEI driver in Device Manager and it won't disappear until i restart my laptop and so on.
I tried disabling that IMEI from BIOS but i didn't find any option in the BIOS to do so.
Please help me to solve this problem or tell me how to completely disable Intel Management Engine Interface driver.
Thank you.

A:IMEI Driver in Device Manager

GladiatorX2,You first need to install the Intel HM77 Chipset Driver. Reboot the computer and then install the IMEI Drivers. Also, when installing drivers in your computer you will always need to install the Intel HM77 Chipset Driver first.Inspiron 5520 Drivers,Downloads and Manualshttp://dell.to/2hOsYEr

Okay I recently installed a new video card. When I installed it I had to move a USB PCI card to the bottom PCI slot. I reformatted the hard drive and reintalled windows. When I look in device manager there is a yellow exclamation point next to SCSI and RAID Controllers----Nvidia NForce(tm) ATA RAID Class Device. Under the properties it says that the location is unknown and "the device is not working properly because windows cannot load the drivers for this device." The driver version is 5.10.2600.446. I have never had any exclamation points in my device manager before. Any ideas of how to get rid of this thing????

A:Driver issues in Device Manager

If you are not running a RAID array, disable RAID in the BIOS and it should disappear from the Device Manager.

So recently I've been receiving driver issues with my PC. I'd be working in FL Studio 12 while in a Skype call with my friends, then all of the sudden the whole entire PC freezes. So, to get a better idea on what's going on I went to the Device Manager, since I figured it might be a driver malfunction. I spot under "Other Devices" some suspicious looking drivers that I do not recognize. I think it might be an ASIO Audio driver that was installed with FL Studio 12, but I am not sure. Here is some more details:  This is details and value of the drivers.--This is general information about the drivers.  In addition, these drivers aren't digitally signed. There's no dates on when it was signed, and the signer is unknown.

So, I was working in a digital audio workstation while in a Skype call with my friend, and all of the sudden the PC just freezes. I tried to speak, but he couldn't hear me. So, I figured that an audio driver installed with the DAW might've contributed to the problem. I went to the Device Manager and saw two unknown devices in the "Other" category. Yet, I don't know what they are. There's really not so many details or information about the two drivers. There's no manufacturer names, descriptions on what they do, and even more suspiciously, they aren't digitally signed. However, there is interesting values they're set as.  One is ROOT\MEDIA\0001, and the other one is ROOT\MEDIA\0002.  In addition, they don't have the necessary drivers, as I googled "Error 28". In addition, I think these drivers are the culprit of my OS malfunctioning.

I have some problem with my Amd Driver, I cant install that driver on my laptop and the amd device not showing in device manager, please help me!

A:AMD driver not detected in device manager

The AMD graphics device will only be seen in the Device Manager if the AMD graphics is active. Otherwise you will only see the Intel HD Video solution. Why are you trying to upgrade the driver? If you want the switchable graphics to continue working, then definitely do not try upgrading with a driver directly from AMD. Only use the HP supplied AMD video graphics software driver from the support portal driver downloads for the appropriate OS.   The HP driver software has been modified by HP to provide switchable graphics. It also contains the Intel driver. Do not install them seperately.

Hi everybody.

I just bought myself a Powercolor Radeon HD 4890 yesterday. After installing the card and the required drivers everything works like a charm. However, every time I start up my PC I get a message saying that a new device has been found on my system. On checking Device Manager I found an "Unknown device" entry under "Other devices".

I'm attaching a screenshot of Device Manager.

Are there any drivers I'm missing? It only happened after removing my old card (after uninstalling all its drivers) and installing the Radeon.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

A:Unknown Device In Device Manager After Installing Radeon HD 4890

I have a Powercolor Radeon HD 4890 (I also have a Gigabyte 4890 and XFX 4890 in two other PCs). I think you need to install the latest ATI Catalyst Suite. You may have installed the driver only package. Anyway, I think it has to do with the HDMI capabilities of the card. High def sound is built into the card (the HD part of the card name) and the HD sound driver is part of the Catalyst Suite. When you use an HDMI cable to an appropriate display, HD sound is also transmitted through the same cable from the Radeon graphics card.

Of course, be sure to install .NET Framework 2.0 as it is required before you can install the full Catalyst Suite. The HD sound driver won't install without it. At least I had trouble before I installed .NET 3.5. I went to Windows Update and installed .NET Framework 3.5. 2.0 is included in that update and 2.0 wasn't available separately.

I have a Toshiba laptop, model L505-ES5018. I had Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit installed on here, but decided to reformat my hard drive using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. After the reformat was finished, I ran Windows Update and it found several items to download and install for me. I noticed that it also found optional items to download and install for me, so after all the important updates installed, I ran the optional updates. After all of this installed, I checked Device Manager to see if there were any errors and I found nothing. I assumed everything was fine. I decided to check Devices and Printers and under my laptop icon, there was a yellow icon with an exclamation point on it. I decided to run the troubleshooting option when I right-clicked the icon....it gave me a solution to download a Toshiba password utility program, so I did that and nothing happened, even after restart. Same icon appeared. When I clicked on the icon a second time, I noticed that the model of my computer at the bottom of this window, changed from L505 to TIAS. I have no idea what this is. I decided to do another reformat on my hard drive. This time, I ignored the optional updates. I checked Devices and Printers again, the same icon appeared but the model of my computer said L505, like it should. There is something in the optional updates that is changing this. Could it be the Intel chipset driver that the optional update is pushing? I'm not sure. I went back to Device Manager, th... Read more

i have installed the correct driver for this belkin bluetooth usb dongle model: F8T012XX1

but in device manager, it has the belkin device and microsoft bluetooth enumerator, which is great. but when u get further down the list. it has a tab named "other devices" and then a subtab with "bluetooth peripheral device" which has an exclemation mark on it.

i have searched for driver software using the update service but it cant find no update.

i have looked for the name of the manufacturer but found nothing.

i then disabled the unknown device, and sent a picture to my mobile phone. which confirmed that it was not the belkin bluetooth device. so i uninstalled the unknown device, restarted the computer. then when i logged in, it said that it had found a new device and wanted me to find the CD that came with it..

i would be greatful if any1 could help me on this..

thanks in advance

Hello,
I recently put together a new computer, and in the process of of installing the USB 3.0 connector from the front of my GX500 case, I either bent numerous pins on the motherboard USB 3.0 header or the motherboard shipped that way and I inadvertently made matters worse. Anyway, that header on the motherboard is without a doubt unusable.
Since I don't really need the USB 3.0 functionality, I bought a USB 3.0 -> 2.0 adapter cable, connected one end to the connector on the front of the case and the other end into the USB 2.0/1.1 header on the motherboard. Unfortunately, when Windows 7 boots and I plug a device into the front ports of the case, Windows detects the front USB ports as "Unknown Device" within Device Manager yet says the driver is successfully installed. I've already downloaded the most current Intel chipset drivers for my motherboard, deleted and reinstalled all USB drivers, and all rear USB connections are working perfectly fine - it's just the two front ports that are connected from the case to the USB 2.0/1.1 ports via the adapter cable.  I've tried both USB 2.0/1.1 headers on the motherboard, and I've tried plugging in several devices to the front USB ports, and this problem still persists.
I've ensured the connection inside the case is solid, yet I cannot get Windows to recognize the front USB ports.  However, I have confirmed that power is being sent to the front ports because it charges my phone when I connect it to the front USB ports via m... Read more

Hi,
My 7270 latitude touch screen stopped working shortly after first use (after win update worked again but for a short time).
All drivers are up to date.
In device manager a USB device shows as unknown (yellow warning triangle), otherwise there are no indications to the source of the problem.  There is no other touch screen device showing in device manager.
How do I perminently solve this?
Thanks
