X1 Carbon Disable/Replace Adaptive Keyboard

Q: X1 Carbon Disable/Replace Adaptive Keyboard

The adaptive keyboard on my 2014 X1 Carbon appears to be failing. It regularly registers phantom button presses near the right end that trigger (e.g.) the settings or keyboard backlight depending on which strip is active. When it launches the settings window, it happens frequently enough to interfere with use. I found many suggestions to update the bios, e.g.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-20A7-adaptive-keyboard-phantom-butt...I have installed all updates from Lenovo's System Update (the machine is running Windows 10), so the bios should be up to date. Are there any other software fixes I should try? If it is a hardware issue, is itsomething I can do myself? Based on my current usage I could survive with the strip entirely disabled, but I don't see a consumer-facing way to do that. Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm literally copy-pasting space to type this, and every time i backspace, it turns my volume down. That's because I accidentally dripped some water on my Adaptive Keyboard Strip this afternoon, and now my Fn key is still stuck on, on a hardware level. (I wiped it off mmediately when it happened, shut it down and left it alone, and now it's still like this.)  I know it's probably either busted or it just needs more time to dry out. I'm planning on upgrading to one of the newer Carbons next month anyway (one without this annoying strip!)so i'm not looking for a permanent fix. But my friend and i were going to play some games tonight and i'm worried i won't be able to now. Is there a way to temporarily disable Fn or something? I know you can't remap it the way you can most keys, and i have tried going into BIOS with F10 when i restarted once but i couldn't use the arrows to navigate-- it kept jumping around and i think the stuck Fn might have been the reason. Ialso  tried making sure stickykeyswas disabled. so it's definitely the hardware and the water. thank you!

A friend has an 2nd gen X1 Carbon (20A7), purchased with Win 8.1 Pro, long since upgraded to Win 10 pro."BIOS" as they keep calling it, is latest, GRET54WW 1.31 Windows automatically updated, Lenovo Vantage Auto Updates on. A while ago she "cleaned" the adaptive keyboard, since when, she thinks, it does not work. It is "dead", not even lit up. Note, this may be coincidental. She says she used firm pressure, but I think it unlikely she physically damaged it. Since then on power up a message is displayed: "Flashing Adaptive Keyboard Firmware... Please do not power off!" This stays for perhaps 30s before booting continues. I cannot get to the EFI by pressing enter at this stage, (but can from the OS). Then, all seems normal except the non working adaptive keyboard. Searching the message in quotes, even just the first half: "Flashing Adaptive Keyboard Firmware" produces zero hits. Zero! Looking in Vantage / Lenovo System Update, I saw that around the same time, "ThinkPad Hotkey Features Integration Package Setup - 10 [64] - V.9.0.0.7" was shown as successfully installed. Suspecting this, I googled how to uninstall, and was led to n1wvu28e.exe. There is however no uninstall option in that package. Further, running n1wvu28e.exe told me that its default install is to C:\DRIVERS\HOTKEY. Although Vantage showed it as installed, this directory had only a single "setup.exe". I ran n1wvu28e.exe which populated C:\DRIVERS\HOTKEY with 21 items. ... Read more

Hi,I have a 2nd Gen X1 Carbon (Model 20A8) My adaptive keyboard is not working as it should. The backlight is permanantly on, so I am unable to determine which mode it is in and therefore which button sequence is active. It doesn't matter how many times I press the Fn key, the lights for all options are permanently switched on. Can someone please advise how I can overcome this issue. I have already downloaded the latest drivers etc. Thanks

Does anyone have a solutions to getting the FN camera button connected to the Lenovo Settings program from the Microsoft Store in Windows 10?  Since upgrading to Windows 10 when pressing the camera Adaptive key I get an error message that this key combination opens the Lenovo Setting Program.  You do not have the Levono Settings Program installed on your computer.  Well it is installed.  I have installed  the latest Lenovo Hotkey package, Dependency package etc and have never had this button work since upgrading from Windows 7 PRO.  All other buttons function as expected. X1 Carbon 20A7.Any ideas??

I have a X1 Carbon Touch (Machine Type 20A7).It came with Windows 8.1 Pro but I flahsed my company image (Windows 7 x64 Enterprise) onto it.Everything works fine and I installed all drivers but the adaptive keyboard strip stays at F1 F2 .. keys and does not change no matter what. Pressing the Fn key does not switch it. I installed the On screen display and have the Adaptive Keyboard show in Control Panel and Dynamic Mode is also on.  The camera icon only flashes the screen once and does nothing. The Wifi icon does nothing and the Gear icon does nothing as well. Only the keyboard light icon and the regular F1 F2 keys work fine.. Any help is appreciated. EDIT:I noticed something funny.. While starting up or before logging into Windows (at Windows lock screen) I'm able to switch the adaptive keyboard strip... But once I'm logged into Windows it suddenly stops working. if I lock the screen again I'm able to switch the adaptive keyboard strips again...  What's going on?

When I have seen this in the past it is caused by not having the proper Power Management driver in the OS image.

20A7 uses a new version of Power Management driver and if your IT guys didn't update the company Win7 image to include the new driver, then it's not going to work.

I cleaned the keyboard of my X1 carbon today, which inevitably involved pressing  all  keys on the keyboard randomly. Immediately after the cleaning, the speaker can't produce any sound. Headphones work fine. I checked the sound option in control panel, and everything seems to be working normally. The green bar that shows the changing volume of speaker perfectly respond to the system and browser, except no sound is actually produced. It also shows that the sound card is working fine. Does that mean that my speakers are broken? Is there any way to tackle the issue or check the status of the speaker? Thank you.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon with Adaptive Function Room Keyboard.  It is my work computer, not my fave set-up.  Yesterday, I may or may not have attempted to clean the keys with a damp rag and wahla my key strokes are not anything like the keys they represent.  I have finally gotten into 'safe mode' but I cannot key in my password to reset or restore anything.  UGH.  After 12 hrs, it did work for long enough for me to draft 1 line of an email and then it stopped.  I've rebooted/shut down/etc.  The mouse works fine - as does enter apparently.  Please help.  This is awful timing...isn't it always?!  And the talking adaptive keyboard is simply dumb.  I brush my hand across at least 3x a day and the computer barks at me. Shaunti in Chicago

I am not a fan of the adaptive keyboard either, but some people like it.  It sounds like you got some moisture under the conductive membrane.  Sometimes that sort of thing dries out, but usually it doesn't.  If it really doesn't work, you might try a hair dryer on a low setting.  You might make it worse, but if it really doesn't work, there isn't much to lose.  I have replaced keyboards on those, but it is not a good job for someone who is not experienced.  You start removing things from the bottom, and need to take everything off.  The last part is the keyboard assembly

Hello, I just received a 2nd generation X1 carbon as a gift from my brother (his old work laptop). It was running Windows 7 without issues. Since I'm mostly studying Linux development, I immediately wiped the hard drive and installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Now the adaptive keyboard is firing random key presses (keystrokes) all of the time. It's really quite unusable (WiFi turning on and off, audio on and off, and random function keys getting pressed). Since it wasn't doing this before, I'm confident that this is something I did when I set the machine up for myself. What I did was to wipe the entire hard drive. I removed all of the partitions including the windows restore and other partitions (I can't remember what they were all called, but I seem to recall that they were factory partitions from Lenovo). Once I started Linux, the crazy behavior began (about 5-20 random key presses per minute). But the crazy thing is that behavior also exhibits itself even before Linux boots. If I boot into the BIOS setup, the adaptive keyboard will continue to fire off the phantom key presses (I can tell because I see the keyboard icons changing as well as the computer beeping every time it randomly chooses an "illegal" key). So, that implies to me that it isn't Linux that is causing the issue directly (it may have triggered something, but it isn't, say, an actively malfunctioning driver). A few more data points. If I reset the BIOS (sometimes I have to ... A:X1 Carbon (2014) Adaptive keyboard random key presses after HD wipe & Linux install

Update:I wiped the drive again and this time installed Win10. The keyboard *seems* to have settled down.I say *seems* because at one point it appears to have registered a screen grab? The system beeped and a moment later it was asking me where to save the screen grab. Beyond that, no random keyboard presses that I am aware of.Of course, the adaptive keyboard doesn't do anything at all now either. I can't get it to change from the default function key row.I took this opportunity to update the BIOS which was on 1.17 to the latest 1.31.I'm going to re-install Linux alongside Windows now to see how it behaves.

Instead it has physical keys... Is this a specific model or done through after market modification? Appreciate your inputs.Thank you.

The Fn key that you use to switch modes of the adaptive function keys, as well as the settings button and project and wifi button don't work. The strange thing is that everything works in BIOS. It is only when Windows 10 boots up that it stops working.Any help that anyone can give me is really appreciated!

Since a series of recent updates (Windows 10 updates and BIOS), my Adaptive Function Keys won't switch modes. The function key strip is stuck in the F-key mode. Function keys F1 through F12 work OK, as do the additional four icon keys on the right-hand end. But they won't auto switch based on foreground application as set in Control Panel->Adaptive Keyboard, nor do they obey the default mode as set in the control panel applet, nor will they switch manually when I press the Fn key on the strip. "Fn and function keys" is listed under System Devices in the Device Manager, using driver version 9.0.2.18 dated 02/11/2018. I've downloaded the HOTKEYS driver and reinstalled it successfully, but with no change. What can I do to re-enable the autoswitch (or even manual switch) capability of the Adaptive Function Keys?

I am unable to disable the adaptive brightness on the i5 HD 5500 1080p version of the new XPS 13.
When I view a dark page, the screen will dim, and when I view a bright page, the screen will get brighter. This is extremely annoying and all the options I've tried have not fixed this issue at all.

Turning off the enable adaptive brightness option in the advanced power settings does nothing. I have this done on all power plans.
The option for disabling it that should be in the Intel Graphics Driver does not exist.
Disabling the Sensor Monitoring Service doesn't fix it either.
I have the latest version of the Intel Graphics drivers. Uninstalling it doesn't fix it either.
Installing another operating system doesn't fix it either, so I'm assuming this is some sort of hardware problem.
Does anyone have a solution to this annoying issue?

A:New XPS 13 unable to disable adaptive brightness

To be clear, there is no solution to this problem. No amount of software configuration will fix it. Dell engineers have confirmed that this behavior is controlled by the display firmware.
Last I heard, Dell is working on exposing a switch in the BIOS that would disable the adaptive contrast feature, although they would not give an ETA on when that BIOS update would be available. (source)

Hi - when I'm in internet explorer, if I accidentally graze the F1 key on my adaptive keyboard, about 1000 internet explorer help windows start popping up, quicker than I can close them down. I already know it's not possible to disable the adapative keyboard itself (unless by some miracle of God this has changed since I last asked?!), much as I would like to, but is it possible to stop this specific thing happening - also I can't run a pop-up blocker because it's a work device and I'm not allowed to install stuff. In conclusion: adaptive keyboard = sadness

A:adaptive keyboard woe

oh and in case it matters it's an X1 Carbon

So I just did a reset on x1 Carbon 2nd gen, and the adaptive keyboard(touchbar thing whatever you call it) seems to be stuck on one mode. Whenever I tap the Fn button nothing happens, but all the other buttons seems to function, keyboard-light, f1-f12 etc. but I remain unable to switch mode. Even when I directly change the mode in "Adaptive Keyboard Settings" it still stays in the "Function" mode. I've tried reinstalling the hotkey driver "https://support.lenovo.com/no/en/downloads/ds031814", but the problem didnt go away. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was shipped a lemon of a computer and I sent it back to lenovo in warranty to get it fixed.  While they had the computer for the third time, the  warranty expired and they refused to fix it while it was in their possesion.   The problem is that the TrackPoint does not calibrate itself.  It simply does laps around the computer screen,  I don't use the trackpoint, but I use the buttons so disabling the mouse in settings disabes the mouse buttons.  I know I can reduce the sensitivity in the registry, but that doesn't really help.   I want to disable the pointing stick and only the pointing stick.

Been going back and forth and can't seem to find a screen that can replace my Thinkpad x1 carbon 3460 1f4 screen. Have found one for the 3448. Don't know if they use the same screen and pins?  See photo for description of the replacement screen I'm looking at.

I'm in need of advice. I have an X1 Carbon 2nd gen with a motherboard that just died last week quite suddenly. I use the laptop for my personal machine and small business and it's been great for me up until this. It's no longer booting and I got a quote from Lenovo service to have the motherboard replaced for ?720 (about $800). It mentions "planar replacement 00UP983". It was purchased in 2015 and is the 20A8 model (i7-4600U(3.3GHz),8GB RAM,256GB Solid State Drive,14in 2560x1440 Touchscreen LCD,Intel HD Graphics,Intel 802.11agn wireless,WWAN,Camera,8c Li-Ion,Win8.1 Pro 64)  In the meantime I just purchased an ASUS ZenBook UX480FD, which is going back to the store to be returned. Hate it. Despite it being quite loaded with nice modern specs, it runs extremely hot, it's heavy, it's thick and bulky feeling and the last straw was that I"m getting blue screen errors and sudden reboots to BIOS even after fresh Windows 10 installs. Reminds me of my old desktop from the late 1990s. It's made me realize I want an X1 Carbon again whether it's having my current one serviced or picking up the new 7th gen or last year's 6th gen. My question is would it be worth having the motherboard replaced by official Lenovo service for the price quote I received? I would plan on still using my X1 Carbon 2nd gen as my go-to machine for at least another 2 years and I assume it would still work for much longer than that. Thanks for any advice.
