Laptop: wireless fn key not working

Q: Laptop: wireless fn key not working

My laptop got some bad malware, so I turned off wireless (Fn+F2) until I fixed it. The wireless LED turned off as it would.

Now I am trying to turn back on wireless (Fn+F2) and nothing is happening. The wireless LED doesn't come back on. The other Fn keys work, but not this one.

It wasn't using 3rd party software to connect to wireless.

Any ideas? (WinXP)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Wireless on laptop not working sometimes

Welcome to TSG.
Was this always a problem. ?If not, what changed? Hardware/software ?
Any other wireless devices affected ?
Let's check for wireless interference :
Wifi test exe.

Download and run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspecto from
on the problem machine. Post a screen shot of the main screen(networks screen) here.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button
to upload it here.

Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing function, download and install NET Framework.

Also.Make and model of wireless adapter?
When you lose signal, what is the status of the modem and router lights.
Is the wireless adapter light on and active color(generally blue) ?

After installing IE8 (internet explorer 8) my wireless adapter stopped working on my HP530 XP laptop. This happened before after another Automatic update from Microsoft that required me to uninstall the update to get it working again.

This time after IE8 the wireless remained dead after uninstallation. All drivers from HP failed, the HP-site tests failed and HP service guys had no idea to fix it. Eventually they told me to bring it in, minimum cost R2000 ($250)

It happened before, so i searched and found a driver that fixed it, this is what i learned:
1. If the adapter is missing from your Device manager, but lights up for a moment just after startup, it is probably not fried, but needs to be recognised by windows again.
2. HP can not help you to fix it and will take your money and it will happen again...soon
3. Use this link for a Broadcom Wireless Driver (another for Vista is on the same site):
4. The driver filename is: 63wb05ww.exe
5. Read the installation instructions carefully, do not just run it, reboot, and the little blue light will shine again!
6. Make sure your BIOS is up to date.

Hope this helps, and stick it to HP for selling us laptops that they KNOW have this adapter problem.

My old thread, I decided to just re-post as the old one was cluttered.

Wireless suddenly stopped working on my laptop.
I have a Compaq 6715B, and yesterday while I was browsing the web, my wireless stopped working, it gave me a notification in the "Safely Remove Hardware" thing near the clock, "The blah blah blah Network adapter can now be safely removed".
The wireless hasn't been working ever since.
The troubleshooting that I've done so far are:
Make sure the wireless button on the computer is enabled, it will not enable, it is a "touch" button, and it lights up blue when it's working, it won't even respond to my touch, the other buttons next to it do work. So that's not helping at all.
I have two of the exact same laptop, I switched the wireless card that's installed INSIDE the laptop, not a wireless card that just slides in the side, one that's under the bottom panel, I swapped them, uninstalled the driver, and connected via. ethernet to reinstall the drivers. No dice.
It's not showing up in the device manager or anything..Click to expand...

I've swapped the card itself, swapped the whole LED board (the board with the power button, wireless button, etc)
Nothing seems to work..

I was running Windows 7, and just switched back to Windows XP, SP3.

Help is very very greatly appreciated, thanks in advance..

Good Morning - Any help is appreciated.

I purchased a new HP laptop (G42 41 5DX) with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 BIT. When connecting to wireless, it says limited access and is not working. However, when connecting via the ethernet cord, I can get online with no problem. We own a desktop and another laptop which connects to the wireless without any problems so I know that the signal is fine. Verizon Fios is my ISP and my router is an Actiontec MI424WR Rev E.

I've tried a hard reset of the router (leaving it unplugged) but this has not fixed the problem.

Any advice?

A:Wireless not working on new laptop

You will want to go into the network and sharing center on your Win7 machine.

Choose the option to set up a new connection use the manual wireless set up then designate your routers settings when you do that. Win 7 likes to use WPA2-PSK security and AES encrytion. You also need to type in your SSID and your wireless password.

It's also important to go back into your routers wireless settings after you reset your router to create the SSID and password, you will also need to select the security and encryption again. Use those settings when you set up your Win7 wireless connection.

A:Wireless Adaptor in laptop not working

its possible theres an option to disable in the bios

BUT Try reseating the wireless adapter

If the adapter is easily accessible, usually through a cover on the bottom of the laptop.
Remove and reinsert it carefully and firmly to make sure it is not loose.
Then remove and carefully and firmly replace it several times to cure any possible looseness or corrosion.
At the same time check to make sure the antenna leads are securely attached.
Note: This is not taking the machine apart. We do not recommend removing the keyboard when that is necessary to find the wireless.

I have a Dell laptop (Win7 Home Premium, 64Bit) and it seems like it always has difficulty connecting to WiFi routers that are using 802.11g. I have a Wireless-N card on my laptop and I would think it would be backwards compatible, right??
I'm the same person, with the same laptop, as this post: http://forums.techguy.org/networking/1079721-dns-lookup-failed.html
and all the symptoms that I was trying to solve in that post are relevant again.
At the time that post was made, I lived in an apartment and the modem/router from my cable company was wireless-G and my laptop seemed to experience intermittent DNS problems. I could never REALLY use the internet for very long, but sometimes some websites would seem to load, but usually pictures would have a problem. Other times the seemingly DNS issue would not let me load any websites at all. While I was on vacation I was able to connect perfectly to 2 different WiFi networks. I know for sure that one of them was Wireless-N (not sure about the other one).
Eventually I moved and my new modem/router from my new cable company was Wireless-N. My computer has connected to that network perfectly for months. Now, on vacation again, I tried to connect to a "G" network again and all the old problems came back EXACTLY as they were before.
Is it possible that my Wireless-N card has that much trouble connecting to Wireless-G networks? If so, is there any fix??

The signal is too weak for a reliable connection. Try closer to the router.

The variation in the signal strength indicates probable incorrect driver or defective adapter or router (or wireless access point). Try the latest wireless driver from the laptop manufacturer's web site. If that does not work right try the driver directly from Intel's site.

If possible check Xirrus with another computer, or another adapter, to see if the router is having difficulty maintaining a constant signal strength (a variation of one or two dBm is OK).

A:Wireless has stopped working on laptop

Go to the Device Manager and uninstall the driver for the network adapter. Restart the laptop and Windows should reinstall the driver automatically. See if this clears up the problem. If not, it might have failed. You could try going to Add and Remove Programs (if XP) or Programs and Features (if Vista or W7) and uninstall the LAN driver if one is there and install a fresh driver from Sony.

If none of that works, consider getting a USB wireless adapter.

I have a Sky broadband connection using a Netgear Super Wireless Router UOM which connects perfectly with my wireless enabled Toshiba laptop.

The problem has been trying to get my PC to talk to the router. I bought a Belkin Wireless G USB adapter (F5D7050)a few weeks ago and with some help from Belkin's helpline eventually got it working. However, within a few days it stopped working and after many long and expensive phone calls to Belkin's support desk, ended up with a new USB Adapter (same model) but which still will not connect. I've been battling with this for the last two weeks and have given up on Belkin support.

My laptop continues to work perfectly with the router. However, the Belkin Wireless Monitor dialogue box shows it's connected to the network (it shows the SSID), Encryption: TKIP, Link speed 36 Mbits/sec. Signal strength and link quality are at 60%. The IP information section in the same dialogue box shows Disabled under DHCP status while there is nothing next to current IP, subnet mask, default gateway or DNS server. The link information box shows there is a link between the computer and the router, but no link between router and internet.

Anyway, I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop with a Zonet 802.11g Wireless CardBus Adapter. I can see the network, I have put in the WEP key, and nothing. I can hardwire to the router using an Ethernet cable, and it works fine, but the wireless does not work. Repair yields a "Unable to renew your IP address" message; i've tried ipconfig /release and /renew, to no effect. I tried running the disc that came with her Verizon wireless, and again, nothing. I have an Acer TravelMate 290 (running XP) and have recently installed a BT broadband homehub. I initially had no problems accessing the wireless network but then my PC stopped detecting any wireless networks - as though the radio was off. Now I cannot switch my radio on - the switch on the PC is not working at all. The problem began once I brought the PC out of hibernation after having (accidently) switched the homehub off and on.

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling the BT software, updating the wireless driver (from the Acer website) - all with no success.

Something that may or may not be relevant is that I also recently installed a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse onto the laptop.

Has anybody experienced similar problems or have any suggestions? Advice gratefully received.

Hello guys

a very annoying problem I have eversince I got wireless internet in 2004. My internet just randomly stops working, mostly when I boot my laptop or when I get it out off standby. This is what happens:

I try to connect to my router, but Windows says "cannot connect to belkin54g" (SSID). The strange thing is, I had the same with my old Windows XP computer years ago, but back then I had a Linksys router. My current router is a Belking (no idea what model).

Also very weird is the fact that my internet monitor (I installed a Windows 7 desktop gadget) shows that the connection is being interrupted all the time. It goes from 33% signal strength to 100% in 3 seconds but after another 3 seconds the signal is lost and the gadget is displaying 0% signal strength. Though the LED on my router's WLAN is not red, nor are any other LED's colored red.

Can someone pleaaaaaaaaaaase help me out? I got this problem for years and years. I've also configured my network card not to go in standby modus whenever the laptop is in standby, this didn't work out the way I've hoped.

One more thing, once I am connected to the router and have access to the internet, there is no problem anymore and I can be online for like 1 month without rebooting or whatever. But sometimes when I reboot/come back out of standby it just doesn't work and I need to reboot again. Sometimes it still doesn't work after rebooting so I reboot again and then it is mostly working, but it is so *beep* annoying... Read more

Click Start, Control Panel then Network Connections. You should have a Wireless connection there. Double click it. Click View Wireless Networks and you should have a wireless network there. If not click refresh network list on the left. If you do have one shown click on advanced settings then wireless settings. Click on Advanced make sure Any Available Network is checked. If more that one wireless network is showing you have to move your Up to the first position. Also do you have Wep Or Wap enabled? If so you would have to enter the key. Also make sure you are close to your wireless router when doing this to rule out a weak signal.

Hi all,

Just to say that if anyone has the same problem with the wireless not appearing to work with windows 7, I have found out that if you use the normal status bar (bottom right) and select your access point, and type in your key, this will not work. You have to do it on the manual setup of the network and type in the access point and key there with your desired security and then windows 7 will actually connect to the wireless access point.

hope that helps.

A:Laptop Wireless Randomly Stopped Working

You've done the driver, good. You've checked the switch, good. I doubt a System Restore will help here, but you could also try that.

Also, most of the laptops face the problem with the residual charge storage. Residual charge gets stored near the RAM chips of the laptop. If the voltage of the residual charge reaches threshold then the system will not be able to access the memory and hence will give some problems while working. To bring the laptop back to the working state, you will have to clear the residual charge which is stored on the laptop. To clear the residual charge, shut down the laptop and disconnect it from the AC source. Remove the battery and then press the power button of the laptop for about 30 seconds. A:Wireless laptop was working earlier today and now it isn't

Welcome to TSG:
We are going to need much more info before we can make any suggestions.
So let's get to it.
Are other pc's able to use the wireless network ?
Any hardware/software changes before the problem occurred ?
Let's see:
Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Let’s take a look at the status of the network adapters

Device manager:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?
4. should be enabled and working properly.
5. If error code,what is it ?

It would be best if you could post a screen shot of Device Manager with the Network adapters and Other devices sections expanded.

My laptop will connect to the internet via my wireless router, but it only does so upon me manually clicking and connecting my modem each time i turn my computer on.

http:[email protected]/8670924770/in/photostream

Also you can see that even though the internet works, it shows a yellow triangle with an explanation point, and when I hold my mouse over it, it states "Linksys No Internet Access" even though i'm currently on the internet.

When I use my iphone or ipad to connect to wireless, it lets me connect to Linksys, it says it has an excellent signal, but it won't actually work to load any webpages/social media/etc.

I guess I'm trying to figure out which piece of equiptment is the problem, is it the modem , the router, or both?

Then I can know who to call for support if I need to!

A:Wireless working on laptop, but not on iphone or ipad

do a complete power cycle - see how below

can we see an xirrus screen shot from the laptop -see how below

whats the exact model of the linksys router

Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply

Direct link to the program is here http://info.xirrus.com/Wi-FiInspectorConfirmation.html

{If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Hi all!!

Having a bit of a nightmare with my new laptop, hope someone can help! I recently purchased a Samsung laptop, model number NP350E7C-A04UK on Windows 8, everything worked fine for the first few months, I actually love the machine! Haha. Unfortunately though, last week, the wireless internet decided to stop working. I've got no idea why this has happened, I have not updated or changed anything in the system. I can connect fine when I plug in an Ethernet cable and my phone connects to my internet through the wireless with no problem so I know the router is working properly. Now the laptop finds wireless networks and says they're available but when I try and connect it simply says 'unable to connect to this network'. I've tried all the usual suspects, updated the wireless driver, uninstalled and re-installed it, I even took my laptop to a mates to see if it would connect to theirs. None of these have worked. I am now officially out of ideas so I've decided to turn to people who clearly now far more than me about this sort of stuff!! Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers in advance guys!

A:Wireless network not working on new Samsung laptop...

Since you cannot connect to your router or other routers as well, I would recommend the following action for starters:

Disable your anti-virus and retest.
Boot into safe mode with networking and retest.

Let us know the results.

Hi all,

I have had this laptop, this problem has occured twice. Hopefully someone can help!

I did a factory reset to resolve this issue which only worked for one night.

Basically after factory reset last night all was well, wifi connecting fine, played games on it till 1am this morning. Upon loading up my computer this morning after waking up this wireless is connected but wont respond or load web pages.

It works whilst wired, (am using it now plugged in) the only thing i can think which is doing this is the windows updates when i shut down the computer, this happened the first time i got it out of the box too.

I can use samsung recovery software to reinstall the windows software but keep everything else on the computer. This works for a while but soon after windows updates the wireless stops working again. This morning though instead of doing a restore i have installed the drivers for the wireless from intel, downloaded more windows updates to try to solve but nothing has worked.

Please would someone shed some light on this for me?

Let me know if you need any information? I have the laptop specs in my profile.

Thank you

Hey guys,

Earlier today I performed a windows update on my Acer Aspire 5600 laptop, and after the restart my wireless stopped working. The update was an optional hardware one for my ethernet port software apparently, and I've no idea if it has caused the problem or not.

I connect to a Belkin 54g wireless router, and usually when I turn the laptop on it automatically connects fine. Now however, I get a red cross through the icon saying it's disconnected or a 'Limited or no connectivity' warning message. I tried looking up the problem using the details button when this box comes up, and it seems in the list of things such as IP, DNS settings etc the last three items have no numbers next to them. The thing is, I can't even pick up any wireless networks anymore. I use the search function and the laptop finds nothing, even though I know my wireless is on and working efficiantly.

It seems to me like my wireless adapter in the laptop is disabled, even though it isn't. I've tried all I can think of, anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks a lot,
- Lee

Hi guys!

I just bought an HP Pavilion dv6830us Notebook PC with Windows Vista SP1 and I would like to downgrade to XP. At first I was having some trouble trying to install XP on this laptop because of the SATA Drive, I finally got it installed.

My only problem is the wireless driver. I installed all the XP drivers that I found in more than 10 websites and my PC seems to be working ok but I can't get the wireless to work, I tried more than 3 different wireless drivers and none of them work. The wireless button is ON so this can't be the problem.

Here are a list of website where I got the drivers from (including the wireless drivers that didn't work):

Something interesting that I noticed... when I open Device Manager in my laptop I see a question mark for Network Controller and Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus.

Under "Network adapters" I see the following:

1394 Net adapter (I think this is the wireless card that is integrated with my laptop).

Realtek (this is the hardware for the ethernet cable).

I don't see any question mark for 1394 Net adapter and Realtek.

Can somebody please help me with this?

Hello, Wireless functionality was lost on my HP Pavillion dv7t-6c00 laptop when I upgraded to Windows 10. Here's what I have in my laptop now: Manufacturer: Intel CorporationDescription: Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 1030Driver version: I've read some support threads on this topic and it seems that this wireless card is not supported by Intel in Windows 10. I've also read that one suggestion is to replace the wireless card with an Intel Advanced-N 6230 wireless card. I tried to replace the wireless card prior to upgrading to Windows 10 with an Intel Advanced-N 6230 wireless card but the wireless card I purchased seemed incompatible with the laptop, as it gave me a Halted screen when I started up the laptop.  So my frustration is I would gladly and easily replace the wireless card but I can't keep purchasing cards that are incompatible with the laptop. What are my options?  Is there a specific/guarenteed HP Laptop compatible part number that I can purchase?   Even better, is there a link to where I can purchase a card that will definitely work? Thank you ver much,Chris

When I try and access the internet through any of the main browsers (I.e. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari) they tell me along the lines of 'unable to access the network' and 'this page can't be displayed' after taking a while attempting to load. I also cannot access it through any of my Windows 8 apps. I know it's not an issue with the home broadband itself and is something to do with my laptop as it is running fine both wirelessly and through using an Ethernet cable on all other devices. I would really appreciate some help with trying to fix this asap as I have spent a lot of time researching this issue and trying most things to resolve it without success, I also need to use the internet for loads of coursework over the summer hols and cannot afford to be taking it to a pricey IT technician. Please helppp

A:My laptop cannot connect to the internet, even though wireless and ethernet are working

Take a look at the file
\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hoststhere MUST be at least a line reading LOCALHOST
but the question is there anything other than comments in it?
If so, leave the comments and the localhost line and delete everything else.

If you modify the hosts file, then you also need to

ipconfig /flushdns
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

I have a HP laptop that runs windows Vista Premium, and is connected to an old Netgear wireless router, with which a broadband modem is connected to.

I have had this setup for nearly two years, and has been running great, including this morning. However tonight I cannot get the laptop to connect to the internet. I have had a couple of weird issues before, but restarting the computer has always fixed it. This time I have restarted everything, and I can access other computers on the network (not wireless) but not the internet.

Strangely, a hard drive that is connected to another computer that is shared for my backups is also not being found. (the other computer is plugged into the router through an ethernet cable, and internet works fine).

MSN, Explorer and the like will not connect to the net. Interestingly, when I start Mozilla Firefox, which loads a simplified google homepage, after a long long time, loads about hald way.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be, I dont know what to do or try, because I havent seemed to change anything to stop it working. Any ideas I could try would be much appreciated.
