Preferred Solution: Ethernet stopped working?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys..

So I have run into a strange problem over the last 2 days..

I suddenly (literally) cannot access the internet using ethernet on my desktop PC. I tried the same ethernet from the same port of the router into my laptop and it worked fine, so guessing it's an issue (HW or SW) with the ethernet settings or HW on the PC itself?

How can I diagnose?

I have attached a photo/screenshot of the ipconfig/all command..

Any help much appreciated!

Alrighty. A friend of mines internet just stopped working a few nights ago. I went to her dorm and checked her settings and connections, all fine. Tried plugging her PC into her roomates ethernet box thing and it didn't work, tried a different cable and that didn't work either. She has a Dell laptop, it looks kinda old, thats all I really know.

My question is, is there a free diagnostics tool I could burn onto a cd then run on her laptop to see if it can determine the problem? Like I said, it suddenly stopped working aparently, and using the roomates cable/ethernet jack didn't solve anything, so it looks like a hardware problem.

Thanks for any help, I'd love to save her the trouble of paying for someone to look at it.

Edit: I forgot to mention what the PC is saying. Under device manager it shows the ethernet card working normally, but it says its unplugged. I have also deactivated the card, and reactivated it to no avail. Again after changing cables and replugging everything it the PC says a network cable is unplugged, but its not! Thanks

I have an Inspiron M531R-5535 and about 3 days ago I noticed that none of the USB ports were working when I tried to back up my phone.  The next day, the Ethernet port failed.  It is not the wire, as it works on a different computer.  My WIFI is working fine, but it is really slow, so I would love to be able to get the port working again.  I am extremely unknowledgeable about computers, so any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

My Ethernet connection suddenly stopped working (I don't use Wi-Fi).The modem is fine, it works on other machines. The Windows 8.1 troubleshooter didn't help. I wanted to uninstall the driver and reboot but all I see in the Device Manager is a wireless driver (Intel Centrino Wireless N 135). Isn't there supposed to be an Ethernet driver? I went to the G500 Lenovo driver download site and download the Atheros LAN driver for WIndows 8.1. I installed it and that didn't change anything (I can't even see where it is). Thanks for your help.

Do you get the same DHCP server and DNS server info on the other machines as well? Unfortunately your problem description isn't 100% complete, for instance we don't know if you can ping the router successfully (which appears to be 192.168.1.254) or not, or can resolve web addresses via nslookup, or can ping web addresses successfully or not, etc.

Hello joncat93,

Have you looked in Device Manager to see if there is a yellow ! or red X against the modem/network adaptors.

Please provide information about your computer, this includes is it a notebook or desktop, is it a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if a brand name, provide the model name or series number (not serial) if a custom build post the brand and model name or number for the motherboard.

Hello Everyone,

This is my first thread, so be gentle with me. Im not as tech savvy as I'm sure the lot of you are, but I can do some things.

My wife's PC encountered an issue on the weekend in which the corded Ethernet stopped connection was MIA suddenly.
I have:
- restarted modem and router.
- plugged Ethernet cable originally from PC into my laptop (connection was present)
- checked for driver issues, uninstalled the LAN driver and restarted.
- changed the Ethernet cord out.
- Windows N&S Troubleshooter reports no issues.

At this point I suspect its a problem with the port itself, the PC was custom made and has only one Ethernet port.

Im considering a restoring to factory settings to see if it could fix the issue, but wanted to get a second opinion before I back everything up.

Thank's in advance

When you say you installed ntune do you mean you ran the application? Installing it makes no difference as its a tune up program and should not affect the ethernet connection. You may have a hardware fault.

A:Ethernet wall outlet stopped working

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Unscrew the cover plate and see if there are any obvious lose wires. It is kind of hard to answer the question of "can you fix it" without knowing how easy/hard it is to get to the wiring. If you end up needed to pull a new cable and you have very little crawl space above the room, then you might want a pro to handle the job for you.

I've lost my cable Internet connection. When I boot up the software (BigPond cable logon) starts but nothing ever happens. There's no error message.
I've tried plugging the cable modem into my laptop and it's fine. I'm using it right now.
Broadcom Advanced Control Suite tells me everything is working - except of course receive and transmit. I've updated the driver and installed it. No difference.
I've done a non-destructive reinstall of Windows. No difference. Where else should I be looking?
The PC is a Compaq DC5000, Pentium 4, 2Gb of RAM, WinXP Pro SP2.
Any help appreciated. I really don't want to do a reformat and install - it takes too long.

Tried to replace with known working driver (not that it was updated in last 6 months) from C:\windows (Win8.1 64bit), Windows returns with "drivers up to date"!
Tried restore from last 2-3 weeks, made no difference. Anyone has any idea if these laptops meant to have "fits" without any reason. Or Toshiba sells them to last max 2 years only....? I do notice U840W is not in Win10 compatibility list, hence reverted back to Win8.1, 6 months ago.

2) Went to microsoft because error message states that drivers could not be downloaded Code-31 for the adapter. This site based on the code states that Microsoft is aware of this issue, and this would not stop the network adapter and should operate properly. This is not the case. My name is Vladan and I have had a problem occur yesterday. My internet stopped working.
I immediately tried my phone's wireless connection and saw that it was working fine, so I tried laptop wireless and it too was working. When I plug in my network cable it stops working.
My ethernet internet connection status shows that Ipv4 and Ipv6 have "no internet accsess". It's not just my laptop's wired internet that stopped working, it's the whole network I have in my apartment consisting of two more computers who also lost their wired-ethernet internet accsess. I suspect something is wrong with my router since it relays my internet but wireless works fine so I'm stumped. When I plug in my cable it shows limited connectivity.

I have tried ipconfig /release - /renew, I have tried netsh winsock reset and netsh int ip reset log.txt
I have tried (netsh winsock reset catalog), also I tried (netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log) and it said the following ::::::

Resetting Neighbor, OK!
Resetting Path, OK!
Resetting , failed.
Accsess is denied.

Resetting, OK!
Restart the computer to complete this action.

Yesterday, my internet through wireless stopped working all of a sudden. It was working good till I closed my pc and went out for a few hours. When I returned and tried to access, it simply does not connect. I get an error saying "Windows was unable to connect to abcd (router name)". I tried to plug it into the router through ethernet and it works perfectly.

I have tried to uninstall the wireless adapter and the lan adapter as well. I have tried it in safe mode. I have tried to delete the network also but now that left me with inputting the password everytime I want to connect.

I am living in a student accomodation with 6 more people and all of them's is working good. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate Edition on Dell Studio 1555. The router is a Netgear one for the Virgin Media Superhub.

Wifi was working perfectly fine although there were occasions where the connection would disconnect by itself. After the free-trial ended, I did not want to buy the packaged they were advertising so I went to my Control Panel and uninstalled Mcafee. This was when the problem started to occur. The internet access icon had a red x and when I went to diagnose the problem, it said that I needed to connect via an ethernet cable. Since then, I have connected it with an ethernet and internet works and I have also installed AVG's free antivirus software.

I have tried to

Vista Ultimate 64-bit, ASUS Rampage Formula motherboard, USB mouse and keyboard connected in back ports.

Two things happened: Avira antivirus warned me of some threats which I either ignored or deleted. Windows Update had some updates ready (although I'm not sure if it updated).

I turned off my PC for a couple of hours, turned it back on and realized that my USB keyboard was not working on the password screen.

I eventually unplugged it from the back and plugged it into the front, where it worked. However, my USB mouse did not work when plugged into the second front port, nor did it work when plugged into the front port in which the keyboard worked.

I accessed System Restore using my keyboard and restored to one day previously. When it finished, both keyboard and mouse worked, although I got a pop-up message alerting me that the "drivers for your device could not be installed." When I clicked "OK," the mouse stopped working again.

I have checked BIOS and both mouse and keyboard are recognized, so it does not appear to be a hardware issue.

This morning when I woke up my computer worked properly. I then went to work, and when I turned it on I got the "blue screen of death." The computer, however, failed to connect to the wireless network. I noticed that the network icon was not in the taskbar. I then unistalled the controller and attempted to reinstall via the 'add hardware' program. I then received the message:

I then, believing it was a driver issue, downloaded the latest drivers from the intel website for my device on another computer. A:Integrated Wireless Controller/PC Card Adapter/Ethernet port stopped working

Sounds like your motherboard is rapidly dying.

If the ethernet controller (or adapter) does not show under Network Adapters and is not in Other or Unknown devices with a warning or error message check in the BIOS (Setup) to see if it somehow got disabled. If it is already enabled, or doesn't show there, see my first paragraph.

When the ethernet controller is defective it can prevent other integrated and/or PCMCIA networking cards from working. When this happens sometimes a USB adapter will work.

Wifi suddenly stopped working, works with Ethernet cable, works with iPad and iPhone, but not with Sony Vaio laptop wifi.

Have spent hours on the phone with Internet Service Provider, who went through all settings and checked everything (checked CMD prompts and changed SSID, created new channels, etc).

I'm using Windows 7 and have McAfee. What could have caused this to suddenly stop working? How do I get it to work again? I have checked my wifi is still on, it still connects to the wireless modem router (D-Link), and at start up has a yellow triangle with exclamation mark inside, then that disappears and says internet is connected (on internet bars icon) but no browsing is possible at all with any of my browsers (chrome, Firefox, explorer).

Have disabled McAfee firewall, have restarted in safe mode, but nothing is helping.

Have tried on different wifi connections, with same problem. I restored to the last date I could use wifi and it didn't change anything.... Help please!

I have a Dell Studio 17 with Vista and Wifi capability. I've had the computer for a year and a half, and I've never had a major problem with wireless connection before. Any problem has been purely because of a low connection strength or because I was in a classroom (I'm a college student) in which multiple people were trying to connect at once. Eventually it always worked.

I was home for the weekend and connected to my primary wireless connection and all of a sudden I lost connection and could not reconnect.

I tried restarting and shutting off both the computer and wireless router. I tried resetting the wireless router. I tried turning on and off the Wifi button on my computer. Still cannot connect.

I plugged in an ethernet cable into my internet directly from the router and it runs fine (that is how I am on the internet on my laptop at the moment).

I will not always have access to an ethernet cable when I go back to school later today and I have a project I need to research so I'm kind of in a rush to get this figured out. Also it's just so much easier connecting wireless and obviously I'd like this fixed.

Anyway, I read up on other people's similar problem and I don't know if I changed something or messed up, but now whenever i click to view Wireless Connections the router for my house has a red x next to it and says "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network."

Hey, Fellas, I'm back.
Lately when I've tried looking at different folders and files on my hard drives I keep getting "Windows Explorer has stopped working and will restart." It's driving me nuts, I can barely do anything.
Also, same thing with Internet Explorer...I'm getting real sick of Vista's shoddiness..

Hello,

I browsed the similar inquiries and solutions that concern this issue but I was unable to come to any resolution thus far.

Simply, my problem is that my computer no longer recognizes when an ethernet cable is attached to my computer. At my school there is a wireless network and a wired network and for the past year I've used the wired network because it is so much faster. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, my computer stopped connecting to the wired network and I've noticed that it no longer even recognizes the plugged in cable. The lights do not power up on the side and under network properties the LAN network announces that there is a cable unplugged...

Like I said, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device driver in the manage devices window but this was unsuccessful in solving the issue. I'd appreciate any help or insight on this problem.

Thank you.

Hello,

I got a virus on my computer and it is doing some good damage. I can't login to your website or any site where you can download antispyware from my PC. My CDROM stopped functioning a couple weeks after I got the virus and so did my ethernet plug in. I purchased an antispyware program, but since my CDROM doesn't work I cannot get it up and running.

I ran a hijack this a while ago and here is a copy of the log.

Hello

My laptop recently got a horrible virus which I managed to fix despite being a girl!
However
One of the remaining side effects of the virus is that it will not scan for wireless networks - every time I try it says :

"Windows cannot configure this wireless connection"
and
"If you want Windows to configure this wireless connection, start the Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) service"

So I can currently only connect to the internet using an ether net cable, which is very restricting as it means I can't take my laptop to a cafe etc.

Things I've tried :
> Turning it on and off again - yes - in every way - the router, the laptop, the cabelling all of it.
> Other laptops - I have had friends bring their laptops round and they have been able to scan for and connect to my wireless network - so the problem is definitely with my laptop.
> System Restore - I have tried to restore back to the week before the laptop got the virus, but this has not solved the problem.

Could it be that the virus made my computer go into some kind of emergency attack mode and then the firewall got effected?

Any advice would be very gratefully received - thanks in advance for your help!

It is a Toshiba A100-920 laptop running Windows XP.

xx

Hi,

I have a linksys model wrt54gl v1.1 and I am using Windows Vista 32bit Home Edition. I have a pc connected to the router directly through an ethernet plus a laptop, 2 iphones and a blackberry that get wireless internet from it. 2 days ago wireless stopped working. The internet on the pc connected to the router by ethernet is still working and the power, WLAN, ethernet, and internet lights are all lit green. The internet and ethernet lights flash when data is being transferred but the the WLAN light is not flashing. I have restored the router to factory default but it is still not working. The phones and laptop are not detecting any wireless network present. Hope you can help.

The only other thing to try is to unplug the router for a few hours. You could also try another factory reset.

Hey,
I was wondering if anyone could help me?  I have been having a lot of issues with my computer and using the internet. I keep getting messages such as ‘windows explorer has stopped working ‘and ‘Host process for windows services stopped working’. I haven’t been able to stream videos (with the exception of youtube),  download certain programs and browsing sites is slow.  I remember my computer being fine until a window update but I don’t know if that’s a coincidence or not.  I have tired uninstalling windows explorer and system restore to no avail.
I would really appreciate any help or advice.

Hello:
The mouse started to stray and stopped working in the middle of doing something, i.e. eBay, typing word and etc. which is very annoying and first of all, I lose all of the work done due to stopping of the mouse.

However, the mouse started working as if nothing wrong, once I restarted by 'force' restart ..... pushing the button in the middle of the PC. Otherwise, the PC is all fine and working OK.

I did apply Malwarebytes to combat the issue, however the issue does not resolve.

Any help on this would be truoly appreciated.

Thanks,

A:Mouse stopped working in the middle of working, i.e. eBay, typing word, etc.

Did you try a different mouse? If you still have the same problem with a new mouse, see if there are any drivers for the mouse from it's manufacturers web site.
Also try a Clean Boot, if that works, then add one startup item at a time till the mouse acts weird again, then you know that is the problematic program.

So one day I was using a laptop wirelessly when the internet just suddenly turned off. I checked my modem and it was working fine but when I checked my router, the lights were on but not blinking. it was just a steady light. when I checked for a wireless network the name of the network I usually use didnt show up.

I tried unplugging everything and plugging everything back in again and I tried pressing the reset button on the back of the router. Can anyone help?

Thanks so much

P.S. my router is a linksys WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband router

A:Wireless router suddenly stopped working (Lights still working though)

what devices do you have connected the router anything else wireless
make and model of the pc

does the PC work if you connect to the router by a cable ?
if not
try connecting directly to the modem and see if that works OK

we need to see some details, which will mean you need to copy to a working PC
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Direct link to the program is here http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifi_download_redirect.php
Then run and install the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

I have had a rather large problem over the last couple of days. It started earlier in the week, when one drive stopped working. Not a big problem, I've had drives fail before. 4 disks, so i can handle one less for a little while, i though. Not so though, while still waiting for my new drive, using my computer like usual (with less load on unit D) i suddenly start getting write-errors to D:, and the Intel Matrix Storage Console lists it as Stopped Working instead of Degraded. Nothing changed except for the status of the Volume, all the disks read the same as before, fully functional.

I have very little experience with these sort of matters. This is the first time I've lost a drive where i might lose data as well, and i have pretty much no idea where to go from here. I've tried to replace the faulty disk with another 500GB drive, but the RAID-setup in BIOS just tells me there isn't enough space, and the Console in Windows places the new drive as a Non-RAID drive. I can mark it as reserve, but that seems to be all i can do with it.

I'm not, hopefully, asking for miracles. I have just two things that i really need to retrieve from the Volume, my Firefox sessions (saved in a separate folder at the root of the drive), and my Thunderbird mail, (stored in their standard location, as my whole Windows-profile is on that drive). Everything else i can get again. (Well, not really, i have stuff stored up from 8-10 years back, from people who has withdrawn from t... Read more

Hi! I am repeatedly getting the error "Internet Explorer not working" / Windows checking for solution/Last browsing closed unexpectedly , then Restore Session. I went to google to find a fix for this error .I'm being told to Press Window + W key then type in Troubleshooting in the Search box , then enter View All ,then Click IE Performance, then click Advanced etc..... The problem is that when I get to the Search box I start to type in the Troubleshooting and after one keystroke of the T, the computer automatically goes back to my desktop home page. The search engine box will not let me fix this problem. Can somebody help me ? Thanks so much! I have IE 10 and recently upgraded to the windows 8.1 from the Windows 8 about 3 weeks ago.

Are you sure you have Windows 8.1? If you were you would have IE 11
