Cannot drag and drop, copy and paste, double-click, buttons on task bar is missing

Q: Cannot drag and drop, copy and paste, double-click, buttons on task bar is missing

My friend needs help. When he opens network connections, it's empty. When he resfreshes it, he gets this error: "The network connections folder was unable to retrieve the list of network adapters on your machine. Please make sure that the network connection service is enabled and running." He checked it and the network connections are enabled but he still can't use them. When he opens the user account in the control panel, it's blank.

When he goes to computer management, he cannot see the properties of any thing.

He is unable to drag and drop, copy and paste, double-click files and open them, and the only thing that you can see in the taskbar are the quick launch buttons. Program buttons appear above the taskbar only if u minimize them.

We've searched around for possible causes and some point it to the pseudo-Trojan FriendGreeting but my friend is pretty sure that he doesn't have the trojan since he never opened any email and he can't seem to find it in his computer.

Please help us!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am having a lot of problems with my vista. As of a couple of days ago, I'm no longer able to copy/paste or drag and drop with ease.

For example, to drag and drop a browser window I drag the window but need to left click my mouse to release it. It?s the same thing if I am scrolling a page.
When I try to copy paste, it?s the same sort of thing, but a little "Accelerator" icon appears and gives me the option to search the word in google. It also doesn't "highlight" the word or phrase properly, and has become a pain to try to make it stick (if that makes any sense).

Its really frustrating, and any help would be appreciated.

Wondering if someone can help me out , been trying to solve this on my own but no luck! Basically my copy and paste doesn't seem to be working (only on notepad) can not copy and file and paste it at all and also been trying to move files ,say for instance a file from my picture folder to desktop. It also seems to make a error noise when I copy and paste as well , like the noise you get if your pressing a wrong key if you know what i mean but no error window comes up or anything. Im on windows 7 32-bit. Please help

Try using System Restore, choosing a date that precedes the date that you first noticed the problem.

Drag and drop is not working properly. [W7Pro ] Drag and drop will hang up and not work at all or will temporarily hang then drop. Click on the line to drag and it seems to begin the drag process but then wont actually drag. Sometimes when drag seems to function the dragged line/object will drop at some random point in the process.

Copy and paste are doing the same sort of thing. The Control C works but highlighting is random. Maybe one letter or word will highlight. Have to repeat the process a lot to finally copy. Paste seems to be fine.

This is a curiosity question more than anything...
At my office, an outside tech guy told us to always copy-and-paste when moving files on our NAS drives and never to cut-and-paste or drag-and-drop. I'm wondering: why?

Is there a file integrity issue when using cut-and-paste or drag-and-drop that doesn't exist when you copy-and-paste? Is there a serious issue that can develop if you cut or drag?

Hi forum,

A few weeks ago my screen froze so I rebooted and the start menu disappeared. Figured I might have a virus because I tried system restore and it said that "system restore is unable to protect your computer." So, I decided to format the disk but before doing so wanted to back up some files and then realized that copy and paste did not work as well as drag and drop.

I found a few solutions to this problem but none of them worked including trying to restart clipbook/network DDE DSDM/DDE, but when I right click on these things, they're all grayed out, so I couldn't restart any of them.

I have Avast, and tried a quick scan and full scan which both say I have no infections.

Any ideas?

Hello and welcome to TSF.

I am not seeing the GMER log in the attached document. Did you have a problem running it?

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

Click the image to enlarge it
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ... IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than System drive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply.

Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

If you still have trouble, try running the scan in Safe Mode.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

If you still have difficulty, run the scan with ONLY the Sections and C drive boxe... Read more

I really messed up my computer. I think I deleted a necessary Service.

I searched high & low at Microsoft Support & all over the internet, but everthing I do to try to fix the problem only brings me to another error message or another function that does not work properly.

I don't think I have a virus or any other malicious software because I scanned my computer a day or 2 before this happened & it was clean.

My taskbar/start menu has disappeared, system restore won't work, I am unable to make any chages to my system services, safe mode is working just as bad as regular startup, many programs do not work properly including internet explorer and more. I am almost surprised I am able to post this.

I have pretty much given up on trying to restore my necessary service(s) or restore my computer to my last restore point. I decided to burn some files/folders to my disk drive and then re-format my computer. But I have run into another problem.

I am unale to cut, copy, paste, drag, drop, move or send files/folders to another location on my computer, including my CD-R drive. I am able to select cut, copy, sent to, etc, but nothing happens after I do.

Please, can anyone help?

I have been working with Vista Ultimate x64 edition for almost six months now. After a recent update from Microsoft my computer would not boot. I was able to run the system restore from the Vista install CD and select a restore point from a few weeks ago and got the computer back up and running. My problem now is that I find that when I try to copy and paste nothing happens. Also I find that right clicking on a file or folder and selecting delete also does nothing. I have tried dragging the folder onto the recycle bin with the same results. Nothing. I first thought that it was a permission problem, but checking that shows that I am the owner. I think it maybe registry problem. What is weird is that I have rocketdock installed and I am able to drag and drop the file onto the recycle bin on rocket dock and opening the recycle bin shows the newly deleted file. That is why I believe it is not a permission problem. Anyone have any ideas what would be wrong?
Thanks, Shawn

Drag and drop function failed in applications like Visio, MS Outlook etc.
All windows.open call from javascript failed with the error "disk error occurred during a read operation".

Could anybody help. As they are all essentials, any help be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1.I can't copy and paste files , whether it's by mouse or keyboard. It seems to work on text by not files. When I try to copy and paste files it makes the noise it doe's like if you were to press an incorrect key .

2.I can't move files from one fold to another or on to my desktop.

3.I can't seem to view any pictures in windows photo viewer it just says loading all the time.

4.I went on to account settings to see if it was to do with administrative properties but I am classed as the admin anyway and even when I click on create a new user or manage user settings (anything with the admin symbol near the option) it just doe's nothing.

I Have rebooted, system restored and lots of other things that people have suggested by nothing works , even on safe mode it doe's the same and on hidden admin that i unlocked. I really am stuck. I have just done a sfc /scannow and it says it found corrupted files but couldn't fix them. I copy and pasted this from the CBS.LOG and have no clue as to what im looking for ,so wondering if anyone can help.

Hello minnie and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm not an SFC/ SCANNOW expert but I'd suggest you run the scan 3 times from an elevated command prompt, rebooting in between each scan. It can take several scans to repair the damaged / corrupt system files.

If SFC still can't repair everything you might want to consider a Repair Install. Hopefull this will fix your currently installed Windows 7 and preserve your user accounts, personal data, programs, system drivers, etc.

I noticed this just the other day when I tried to retrieve photos and mov files off of my camera and onto my desktop. The copy and paste function would not work. The photos would highlight when selected, but when I went to paste them anywhere, nothing would happen. I then tried to move photos that were on my computer already and neither cut/paste or drag/drop would move the photos to a different location. I then tried to cut and paste a word doc into a new location and that wouldnt work either. I can cut and paste text within a word doc if that is relevant or not. I did a virus scan, tried a system restore point, and ran the sfc? scannow diagnostic which came up fine. I know very little about how computers work so can you give me some ideas on what to try to fix this problem. Its a Windows 7 is all I know. Thank you!

A:Can no longer copy and paste or drag and drop files in Windows 7

How are you copying? After you Select files are you right-clicking them and Copy or are you using the Ctrl+C key combination? Same question for the pasting, right-click and Paste or Ctrl-V key combination? Another way is to open two copies of Windows Explorer, locate the files in one and locate the destination Folder in the other, right-click the Taskbar and choose either stacked or side by side then Select files and drag from one to the other.

My symptoms are these:
right click hangs on all files but not folders for about 30-40 seconds then works fine for a few moments but once I click away or do anything else the problem comes back
using the keyboard to copy hangs and then once the computer "unfreezes" copy/paste with keyboard works fine
double clicking on a file that would launch a program hangs for a while then opens the program.
using the delete key hangs
Otherwise performance is normal everything runs fine while using all programs.

What I have tried so far:
Running Adaware and AVG to determine if spyware/malware installed
using shellview to disable processes - no results
cleaned temp files and defragmented drives
uninstalled hp easy button keyboard software

Problem does not occur in safe mode.

I run WinXp on a Gateway laptop which has no disk drive. I do not have a copy of the installation disk.

My computer was running way way too slow as I use it for work running my own business. I have a few tasks each day but these were turning into entire day ordeals.

I downloaded Advanced System Care 5 (I used 3 + 4 previously without a problem) I also always run Avast and I trust it enough that I do not believe I had a virus.

I ran Deep Care on ASC. I believe it deleted system files which I have heard other users experiencing, but did not see signs of this right away.

Instead I noticed a few services I know I did not need running. To be sure I googled "which window xp services can I turn off"
I clicked the first hit which was: http://www.jasonn.com/turning_off_unnecessary_services_on_windows_xp

I followed these suggestions all the way. However, some services would not stop or allow me to disable them but I was able to disable most of what he said to (I think RPC was the exception which I usually do not run but have been running almost all services that are default lately).

Now I noticed my computer started fast. Then the phase right before my login window would appear too AGES when its usually the fastest part.

Have a WinXP Pro machine that the Paste function ceased to work on. Copy is still a valid option and drag and drop works for files. This is happening for both files in folders and from one text file to another. The computer is on an isolated network for TV production on our campus and does not have external access (even isolated thumbdrives).
I have removed the clipboard component and reinstalled it from an XP Pro (SP3) CD and it is still doing the same thing. If you try to run "clipbrd.exe" it will begin to launch but then does not respond. It is possible that we will have to reinstall XP on this machine, but I wanted to see if anyone had some good ideas on this first. We are using video production software on this machine and it is going to be a royal PITA to rebuild. I can get logs, but it takes some doing, so please be specific on what will be helpful in diagnosing this issue.

Hey all, I've very recently (2 days ago) been having some very strange issues with my new computer.
For a start, I can't drag and drop anything, the motion works, but it never actually copies anything across. Although I can manually copy + paste things.

Also, buttons sometimes become inactive, like I won't be able to click on anything what-so-ever yet the mouse will still work and move around the screen, I've tried 2 different mice AND a Wacom Intuos tablet and it happens to all 3 of them. However, if I press ctrl + alt + del and exit it, the buttons become active again for a while yet still no drag and drop.

My problem is exactly the same as this here: (yet it's windows XP so I don't know if the solution would be the same)

My setup if you need to know is as follows:

Operating System:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Asus P8 P67 Pro

Intel i7 2600k

Graphics Card:
Nvidia GTX 570

12 GB DDR3

Saitek R.A.T 5 Gaming Mouse

Saitek Cyborg V7 Gaming Keyboard

I'd be really appriecative of any possible help,
Thanks a lot,

I thought I had a very good idea, so I downloaded 'Avast' and ran it. I killed 65+ viruses/malware/spyware with 12 different names.Problem is the program gave me the option of repair / move to chest / rename / delete. So I tried repair. Most of the time it didn't work. Then I tried move to chest - debateable. Lastly I tried delete. This must be the most dangerous word in ComputerLand. I assumed (wrongly of course) that the program (Avast) would not allow me to delete key Windows components or maybe Windows XP would prevent it. I was hoping for some error message saying this file was important. No such safeguard, so I carried on deleting. I obviously wasn't thinking straight.I probably only deleted 5 files but it was enough, obviously, to give me major headaches.Problems:1. Cannot copy from one folder to another.2. Cannot copy and paste, or cut and paste.3. Cannot click, drag and drop.4. Taskbar refuses to show open programs.5. Cannot move 'Quick Launch' icons right/left.6. Some programs refuse to start. I re-installed most and they now seem okay again, except 'Windows Defender'. With many programs I get the error message = 'Windows Installer Service cannot be run'.8. Another error is 'RPC Server not running'Fixes? So far this is what I have done to fix my problem. Well, I tried and it didn't work.1. I ran C Cleaner and repaired all errors. We have a problem here that I have never seen before: On a shared folder (the folder is on a server running Server 2003), a user (running Windows 7 Pro) moved (using Drag and Drop) two of three files into a new subdirectory he had created. In his Explorer window, the two files are now in the new folder, and no longer appear in their original locations, only the third file. However, when another user (running XP Pro) went to access the files, they still saw the three files in their original location. I am running Windows 7 Pro, and I tried to access the files, and I saw the three files in their original location also. I then moved (using Cut and Paste) the two files into the new subdirectory, and now everyone sees only the one file in the original location, and the other two under the new subdirectory. When the user saw the three files even after the move, we tried refreshing, closing Explorer completely, and re-opening, and still the three files showed in their original location. Is this a Windows 7/Server 2003 interaction issue, or something else? We all access, and add info to these files daily, and we want to feel secure that they are being updated properly. This is the first time anyone here has seen this particular issue. Thanks for any help.

After battling with and removing a Trojan Malware recently that hijacked my browsers. Now I have this problem with no functionality with drag and drop of files in explorer or cut and pasting of files.

The files that were infected were winlogon.exe and explorer.exe, both of which were identified, removed and then replaced from my XP installation CD. The Malware is now gone, my browser no longer redirected like it was with the infection.

I have run the various dlls for re-association as recommended, followed instructions from Microsoft, none of which worked, then uninstalled XP SP3 all to no avail. Still faced with this problem. I can copy from a command prompt but explorer.exe has lost this functionality. The options for drag and drop are enabled in IE and task bar.

Now stumped. I did hear one other suggestion was to remove XP SP2 and re-install, seems like back-peddling to me, am I missing something obvious here?

I'd start by running SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from the Run dialog. MCE has been known to have some issues with this, but it's worth a try. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/43051/how-to-use-sfcexe-to-repair-system-files/Should that not fix it, then try a repair of XP (it'll leave your data and programs intact): http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Hello. Using vb.net, I've been trying to figure out how to paste the clipboard into the window your mouse pointer is pointed.

If anyone has used unix you are familiar with what i am asking for; just to double right click or middle click and to paste the content of clipboard to the given window.

Can anyone offer any ideas for .net?

I would use double right click, or middle click, or single right click.

Please respond with your ideas~

Im a PC and I have been having a problem with my mouse for about a month now.

The symptoms I have encountered thus far are:
I can't click on task bar right after windows is booted up. In order to access it i have open the my computer icon on the desktop (which I can click on). I am unable to click within the window until I hit alt-tab. Following that i can also use the taskbar.
I can click on icons but can't drop them where I want to, need to copy/cut and paste. Same goes for the quick launch icons, I can use them but not rearrange their order.
While in Firefox I can access only the webpage window or the Firefox task/address bar at a time and to switch from on to another I need to click on the taskbar or desktop and then back to Firefox. What I click on first in the window following that procedure is all I can use unless I repeat the steps to switch it.

I have a Logitech G5 mouse.
My keyboard runs fine and with out any problems. I unplugged the keyboard and rebooted to see if it might have been a stuck button but the problem was still there.
I have used a different mouse (a wireless G7 Logitech) but the problem persisted
I formatted and reinstalled windows xp yet it remains the same.
I have made sure I have the newest updates for my mouses firmware and software.
I have virus scanned to no avail.
In safe mode my mouse works like a charm, yet when I boot in safe mode and I need to select which account to sign in with it I need to use my keyboard since I cannot ... Read more

A long text coming up, but I thought it was better to explain the whole story and every step I went trough..

Since yesterday several problems hit my computer. It all started with the welcome screen: when i logged on it instantly started logging off after showing the desktop for one second.

I fixed this using a non destructive system recovery (to keep the files in tact).
After that, the computer was working again, but everytime i wanted to shut down some strange error appeared scanning and telling me that the user profile space was exeeded or something. Later on I fixed that using a registry file found on some forum, it was something like disableuserprofilelimit.reg
Now the computer is working again, BUT I still can't drag/drop/copy/paste files or text! Neither with the mouse or the hotkeys CTRL C and V etc. And also, the startup/shutdown time is about 4 times longer then normal.. Even in the windows safe mode! AND when I minimize a window it won't appear on the windows taskbar so I have to use ALT+TAB everytime....

The first thing I did was using cccleaner and regcleaner, then lavasoft ad-aware and then a system scan with nod32, found nothing. At some forum i figured the blaster worm might cause the problem but the removal tool for this did not find anything..

At some forum someone said Internet Explorer 7 might cause this problem, since some .dll files are conflicting since the recovery. BUT SINCE I CANT COPY PASTE I CANT REPLACE THIS FILES!! very ... Read more

This tells me that you have a malware problem and it sounds like it is still present on your system.

Try the following fixes for "Drag and Drop", but I think you will have to visit our Virus Removal Forum to get help cleaning all the nasties out.

Drag and Drop
First of all check if "drag and drop" is enabled.
Both the options below should be checked.

Right-click the Start button, choose Properties, and click Customize. If you?re using the default Start menu, click the Advanced tab and then, in the Start Menu Items box, select Enable Dragging And Dropping. (If you?re using the classic Start menu, in the Advanced Start Menu Options box in the Customize Classic Start Menu dialog box, select Enable Dragging And Dropping.)

There is another setting for "Drag and Drop" in your IE options.
Open IE > Tools > Internet Options > (tab) Security > (button) Custom Level and scroll down to "Drag and Drop or Copy and Paste Files" (under Miscellaneous).
Check "Enable"

If that does not help,
Line 233 right hand side

Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt

Windows XP freezes when I try to drag and drop files. Also, when I right click on folders, the computer will sometimes freeze up. Or, the right click menu will open up, but when I try to move or copy folders, it will freeze up. I have to open task manager with Ctrl/Alt/Del and end the process. I just installed Directory Opus 9.5 to get around this, but I would like to solve the problem. I have a Dell Dimension 3100 with XP SP3. Thanks for any input!

I have an HP laptop I got last November that runs Windows 7. About a month after I got it I wasn't able to copy files onto my desktop or into folders from peripherals such as external hard drives or camera cards. I could still download from the internet or grab attachments from e-mails.

The other day I noticed I couldn't even move anything between two outside pieces of hardware (I can't move pictures from my camera onto my external hard drive). That blue waiting circle appears and says that the program is not responding. When I exit out of the window I get a window that tells me Windows Explorer encountered an error and was forced to close.

Did I change a setting accidentally or is this something far more serious?

Hi Penguin1008,
You can try to restore your system to the point it was still working fine. You can find detailed help for example from here:
But there is no harm to scan your computer for viruses and other nasties.

What i want to do is set the default action when i click and drag a file to a different location to be to copy not to move it.

Any ideas on how i would do this?

A:Set drag and drop to copy not move

Hello Imanewbie,

Sorry, but there is no way to do that I'm aware of.

However, you could add "Copy to Folder" and "Move to Folder" to the context menu to make copying files to another location easier to.

Hope this helps,

I'm not sure if this is the right section but anyway, I'm wondering if its possible to turn drag/drop into cut.
For example: when I have to folders open next to each other, and I select a bunch of files from the left folder, and I drag / drop them to the right folder, it copies the files...

I was wondering if its possible to change that, because its pretty annoying. And as far as I remember, vista always used to move them, instead of copying...

My buddy just bought a brand new Acer Aspire 5552 and fresh out of the box he cannot double click drag any windows.

If he wants to drag/move a window, he has to actually click and hold the button. He cannot use the trackpad.

He updated to the latest drives directly from Acer's website and it still doesn't work.

I searched google for any solutions and I found one post where the guy had the exact same problem, but no one replied with a solution.

Any thoughts on this would be great.

Hello guys,

A couple of days ago my right click drag-and-drop stopped working... restarted alright (thought it'd be that simple) but it's not back...

Any ideas?

Just to clarify: my right click works ok, so it's not the mouse that's at fault, I would guess...

A:Right click drag and drop stopped working?!

I have the same problem and am looking for a solution. It's definitely not the mouse; it's a software problem. It happened first on my desktop at work. Later, it happened on my laptop. I did a System Restore to earlier in the day, and it fixed the problem on my laptop. Then I reinstalled the program that prompted the Restore point, and my right-click drag-and-drop still worked. Therefore, I don't think it's a program I installed.

When it stopped working on my laptop, I remember that I had to kill the Explorer process for some reason. (I think I was copying something from an external drive, and explorer.exe stopped responding, so I killed it and tried to go along my merry way.)

I've looked around, and the only solutions I can find are checking to see if drag.exe, drop.exe, or TEXTER is running. I've never seen any of these processes.

Any ideas?

I am having an issue with my mouse settings - whenever I try to drag and drop a file, it opens before I have the chance to drag it. How do I change this in my settings?

A:Why do files open immediately when I click to drag and drop?

You could check the double-click speed setting for the mouse.

Do the file names get underlined when you put the mouse cursor over them? Then the explorer's Folder options may be set to one click instead of double click.

Hey, a few days ago I stumbled on this one tutorial by Brink, I believe, where there's a registry tweak to set up what happens when I click-drag a file to a different hard drive. Some guy complained about how it's oddly set up where a click-drag to the same hard drive is "Move", yet a click-drag to a different hard drive is "Copy".

I want to adjust the setting so a click-drag will be the same thing for every file to every drive. Where's that tutorial again?
