Folder not remembering info?

Q: Folder not remembering info?

I have all of my folders set to default to a list view, but I have one folder on my desktop called "Games" (it's actually on the desktop, not a shortcut to a folder) with shortcuts to my game programs. There are only four icons in there now, so I keep the folder small and tell it to display the shortcuts as Icons, not as List. The folder often reverts, for no apparent reason, however, to a large size and a list view. Why is this? I have tried everything, even resetting all folder options and then setting this folder again (and obviously I have the folders remember settings options turned on). This folder and this folder alone constantly forgets its settings; my My Computer and My Documents windows, for example, remember their size exactly. Does anyone have any idea why this one folder constantly resets itself to this random state?

Preferred Solution: Folder not remembering info?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Folder not remembering info?

It's a common problem, and I have not heard of a perfect fix. But some times installing the latest service pack (SP) or updating your broswer will cure the problem.

I originally noticed this problem when my desktop icons started resizing and all moving to the left after reboot. I thought it may have been a resolution issue so tried all the settings e.g. autoarrange off etc. I tried programs that were supposed to lock the icons to no avail. I then noticed that files in one of my folders would also arrange themselves alphabetically (instead of sorted by file type as I usually have them) any time you closed the folder. This led me to believe that it was Vista not remembering my folder settings. After a search of the internet I tried the regedit fix (BagMRU) set to 20000 but this does not work either. Does anyone know anything else which might work?

I upload photos to a web site that I use for my business. When I do this on my "XP home" machine using IE 8 or Firefox both browsers remember the last folder for me. When I do this on my "WIN7 home 64bit" machine using IE 8 it doesn't (Firefox does) and I have to navigate back to the folder each time.

Does anyone know why, or if I can make IE 8 do this for me om my win 7 machine?

P.S. It seems as though all the settings on IE are the same.

Thanks much

Hi,
I am trying to set a default view for all folders, such that when I change the view in an explorer window, it will only take effect for the current explorer window, and will not be saved. Or even better, let me choose when I want to save a view setting as default for the current folder. I do not want to keep resetting my folder view. In Windows 98/XP it was possible. Thanks.

So here's what happens:

* R-click on a folder in explorer --> Properties
* Go to "customize" tab
* Choose "Optimize this folder for" X
* Check the "Also apply this template to all subfolders"
* Apply and OK

This works for a little while, and the folder and subfolders behave like the type I have selected. But after a while, after some normal tasks (closing, re-opening, etc), I come back to this folder, and it totally defaults back to the "General Items" type, as did all its subfolders.

The weird thing is, for some folders the system does seem to remember, but not for others. I haven't thoroughly diagnosed the problem to accurately determine when it forgets and when it remembers properly, but this is a big annoyance.

Anyone have any ideas?

I think I managed to find the answer to my own question - Windows 7 by default has this feature enabled: "Automatic Folder Type Discovery"

This is probably what's causing my folders to forget the type that I set for it.

And things look fine now... so far.

Hi guys. I recently installed Vista to a PC and installed IE8 (I dislike 9), and have an odd issue. When uploading pictures/files in IE8, it remembers the last folder I had open, but it doesn't remember the view type (large icons, small icons, tiles, etc) and always goes to list view.

On my other PC it used to remember view type perfectly in IE8, so not sure what the problem is. And oddly, Windows Explorer remembers the view type fine, so does "file download" in IE8, so it just seems to be "file upload" in IE8. Can anyone help?

Hi badweather and Welcome to TSF,

Normally Windows is indeed supposed to store these settings, there just one question: What icons/lists are you talking about inside Internet Explorer? Ir it an FTP or something like that you connect to where it isn't saved?

Otherwise just Open IE > Set it up the way you want it.
Choose File > Exit. Just to make sure it saves the settings.
Then re-open the application.

Hello I hope you can help, you have before and that was great!

I have had no problems since you last helped me but I ran a Spyware Doctor scan and found around 30,000 .exe files that were obviously some kind of trojan. I tracked them down and found them in the System Volume Information folder where I the system restore points get filed. I went into safe mode, activated permissions to get into the folder and deleted all of the files. This worked for a while then they just reapeared again!

I found somewhere that someone said to just deactivated the system restore service which again worked but hasn't corrected the problem.

I have just run another scan and it again has found over 30,000 files (around 2gb of data) in the RECYCLER folder (which I understand in the deleted files area).

Can you help me firstly get rid of them and help me find what ever it is that is causing these problems and get rid of that forever!

I really rely upon and need my laptop for work and this is seriously slowing things down.

Not sure why. If this is in a Windows Explorer folder and not in Windows Mail, then you should be able to add the Date column to it and have the folder sorter by it as well.

I have a directory/folder that has about 10,000 files in it (an image sequence).. Whenever I access the directory, it takes F-O-R-E-V-E-R to get date info on the files.. I was overwriting some of the files with a new render, but the render stopped.. I wanted to see where it stopped by looking at the date info, and it took 7 or 8 minutes before the green gauge at the top finally finished going all the way across the address bar, then the dates started popping on one at a time.. Tick... Tick.. Tick.. very slowly..

Why does it take so long? I have a Quad-core notebook with raid array, each of these files are only about 2M each..

Also: I noticed when I overwrite the files, it doesn't update the date information.. The images are still showing their original creation date, even though I rendered over them... ???

First off, I really dislike windows media player for music applications. I have always used Winamp. However, to use my mp3 function, excuse me, wma function on my phone, I need to use the sync function in wmp. When doing this, it uses the information in the ID3 tag to place the song into the "appropriate" folder. I do not want this, I want the album to be the containing folder and the song name to be whatever the file name is of that song. In other words, I want the ID3 tag influence to be completely removed. Is there a way to do this? Thank you.

I have four partitions all ntfs

f: 100gb of which 15gb free

i have not formatted any of my drives for more than 1 year. but in the mean time i have installed and deleted xp sp2 5 times in partitions c:, d: and e:. through the following steps
install the new os in the desired partition
edit and save the boot.ini file

my problem:
as i was defragmenting f: i found a file in system volume info that is more than 1.5gb.
but when i click properties it shows 0bytes occupied in both the os.

i want to delete this file. even if that means deleting of restore points. it might be that the file has been created by an os that is no more there io the system.

so please suggest me ways and measures to delete this big file in system volume info

A:system volume info folder is > 1.5 gb

Turn off System Restore for all drives, and do it from each OS. That will delete all old restore points. Then if you want to use System Restore, turn it back on, but from the XP SP2 partition, uncheck the drive that has Server 2003, and from the Server 2003 partition, uncheck the drive that has XP SP2. Divide the other partitions between the two OS.

You don't want to have both OS monitoring all drives for System Restore--you'll end up with restore points that won't work.

I recently had a virus picked by my virus checkers(s). I have AVG AV as resident, but scan using Comodo F/W's virus portion.

Both said that the offending file was in the System Volume Information folder.

I am denied access to that folder, although obviously the virus checkers were not. I checked on the wbe and followed the ways to gain access to the folder, but they failed.

In the end I used AVG's AV to delete the virus files, not just quarantine them.

I then used Western Digital's Data Lifeguard tools to copy the entire disk to another disk. It failed to be able to copy the System Volume Information files. IT said that these were probably not critical, as Windows would rebuild the files.

So that's one way to get rid of the virus! <G>.

However, although I have asked to Show Hidden Files and Folders and to allow access to system files, I still cannot get in, and neither could Data Tools, which seems weird.

Where to from here? Has the virus placed some sort of lock on the folder?

Thanks for any help

1. Click Start button.

2. Type ?regedit? there (without quotes) like this screenshot:

3. Right Click over regedit link and select by clicking ?Run as Admin..?

4. Accept the security prompt ( if appears). You will get this window:

7. Give it any name, so that you can remember, for example, I have given it ?Name?:

9. Now right-click on the new key e.g; ?Name? and select ?New -> Key?. Give the new key name of command.

10. Right click on the default value to modify it:

11. I have used explorer.exe in this example to open Library after clicking my name in context menu. But you can use any other command key as you like.

12. If you end here, the thing will look like this screenshot, but fully functional:

13. For obvious reason, you will want two more things, (1) to change its position and (2) Add an icon to it.

Hi,

After all the help I've been receiving, it is a pleasure to try and give some info. back for a change.

I had a post previously asking how to find the ALL USERS folder; I didn't seem to have it (anywhere).

Anyway, I was in Barnes and Noble this AM, and looked at all their Windows7 books they had. Sure is an industry onto itself, apparently. Probably more on this subject than what they had in the Cookbooks section.

In one of them, I found a somewhat obscure mention of the fact that there is no more ALL USERS, that the folder was re-named in W7 to Public (which I do have).
So, I guess, that's what happened.

BTW: all you folks probably know of this, but if you don't, you should download the free utility AutoRuns. Wow ! Everythiong you could ever want to know about startups, tasdks scheduled, etc.
Really impressive. Can get from: Autoruns for Windows

One question: Besides Event Viewer, which I have much trouble understanding the info. that is presented, are there other utilities, etc. built into W7 which provide similar info. on hangups, my famous Windows Explorer starting and re-starting problem perhaps, etc. in a different format or info. context ?

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone had a solution to this.

I have my System Reserved partition set up as a 300mb partition. I set this as a custom size to get around the System Image backup error when it was just at 100mb.
I also keep my WinRE Recovery folder on there instead of on My C: partition.

Never had any problems with it until recently. The System Volume Information folder keeps growing and leaving me with little space on the partition, which again causes the Image backup errors.

So, how can I stop that folder from growing? I've tried all the obvious solutions like Disk Cleanup, Defrag, Deleting USN journal, Malware and A/V scans. I don't actually know what is writing to this partition/folder. From what I understand, that folder is specifically for System Restore? Even with it turned off the folder doesn't shrink down.

I'd like to keep my System Reserved partition. The only solution I can think of is to temporarily make the C: Drive the boot drive, delete the SR partition and then recreate it and set it back as the boot drive. But if that folder fills up again, I'll have to go through it all again.

But if there is another solution anyone has I'd love to hear it.

Thanks

A:How to stop System Volume Info folder growing on Sys. Res. Partition?

What system backup image error ?

The SR partition should never grow, should never have a letter.(If you gave it a letter)

Unless you use Bitlocker, there is no reason to have a SR partition.

Why don`t you just reinstall windows to a pre defined partition ?

here is the full path, \AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application.
it contains some other files and specifically two folders named, 17.0.963.56 and 17.0.963.79, which are named exactly as chrome versions.

and here is a snip of a inside that 17.0.963.79 folder,

my question is, as you can see, it has a folder named as installer and it contains files named chrome.7z(84mb) and setup.exe(1.4mb), can I use these files as standalone installer for chrome in later time or in different machine? I know downloading chrome isnt much of weight, but just the curiosity.

(Note: chrome is updated to latest version above. I tried clicking and running this setup.exe in windows but nothing happened. and inside that 7z file, it contains every file on this path, \AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\17.0.963.79 contains.)

When I go to a new website that requires a password, a box pops up from Win 7 and asks me if I want to "Remember This Password". There is one site that I clicked NO the first time I used it. What can I do to get Win 7 to remember the password for that website now?

Greetings BC,

This problem is happening in Chrome. At my school, you have to log in to use the internet. When I connect using the wireless my log in credentials are saved and all I have to do is click log in. However, when using the wired connection (much faster) it does not remember my log in details. I believe it used to but one time a friend logged in with theirs for some reason and now it doesn't remember them. Typing this in every time I want to get on the internet is pretty annoying and I would like to have it remember my log in details.

Picture if you want: http://i.imgur.com/QQjJa.png

I tried deleting the saved password in Chrome for the URL I get when logging in to wired but it didn't remember it after I logged in again.

Could someone please let me know how I can get Chrome to remember the log in details?

Thanks,
Kyle

Good Day All -

I recently upgraded to IE 9, however due to compatibility with some web programs for work I had to roll back to IE 8. I also encountered a profile issue and I lost all my saved username and passwords in IE. My IE 8 is now not asking to save usernames and passwords and it had in the past. I have searched the internet and everyone says make sure it is set up to remember username and passwords... by going to Internet Options > Content > AutoComplete> Settings. I have all the boxed checked. I have triple checked it. I looked in the IntelliForms in the registry as another website suggested and nothing is there.

Please help!

Have you checked that the autocomplete checkbox is ticked? Click Tools>InternetOptions, then click the Content tab. Is the autocomplete box ticked?

Hi
I am using a Firefox browser which has just been updated to 2.0.0.20. I don't like version 3.

When i login to hotmail & check the 'remember me on this computer' tab, it does remember me after i sign out until i close the browser.
When i re-open the browser, i have to type all in again!

Ok, i think in IE, it remembers me all the time!

Could it be the update?

When i was about to contact hotmail technical help, it said to include any software just installed in my query!
As i say, recent update & also i installed SuperAntispyware & System info for Windows info, thats all.

Help appreciated.

In Internet Explorer, I am having a problem. My first step was to contact Microsoft, but they said I would have to talk to you as it was an OEM version. In IE, the box for a username and password pops up. I fill in the info, and check the box to remember it. However, the next time I go back, the fields are blank. This happens every time, for all sites. I have tried everything I can think of, including reseting all default settings, etc. Thank you.

A:IE NOT remembering passwords

So Microsoft gave you the address of this site to get help? Is that true?

Anyway, are you talking about IE not remembering the userid and password when you first connect to the net via your dialup connection or are you talking about userids and passwords when you go to certain webpages?

If your talking about it not remembering the userid and password when you first connect to the net via your dialup connection then do this,

Start>Find>Files, key in *.pwl and press enter. You should see one that has the username for your PC. Right click on it and select Rename. Now rename it .old, for example, bhesson.pwl would be renamed to bhesson.old

Now click on Start>Shutdown>Restart. When the Windows logon box appear at startup leave the password box blank and click on OK. It's important that you click on OK and not on Cancel.

Now see if IE remembers the userid and password. You may need to key it in the first time but after that subsequent conections should remember it.

If your talking about userids and passwords when you go to certain webpages then do this, Start>Settings>CP>InternetOptions>Content>AutoComplete. Make sure userids and passwords are selected.

Hi,

IE8 isn't remembering passwords on my email accounts. I have tried putting them on as 'trusted sites' under internet options - this didn't work. This happened before and I posted here but didn't save the topic (is this possible?) so can't remember how to fix.

Thanks.

A:IE8 - not remembering passwords

Blue, here is your previous topic about this issuehttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic312303.htmlHere is how to find any of your previous posts:Click on your name next to Logged in as: on the left side of the page, just under BleepingComputer.comYour profile will open. Click the drop-down arrow next to Options (left side of page) and choose either Find member's posts or Find Member's Topics. Scroll through the list until you find what you are looking for.In your case, you won't have a lot of pages to look through. If you have several pages of posts or topics, and don't want to wade through the them all click on Search at the top right of the BC page. This is useful if you don't know the date range of when you posted, but you do remember a few keywords from the post. Click on More Search Options. When the search page opens, type in a keyword from the post you made, then enter your name in Filter by Member Name (optional). Scroll down and click Perform the search.Example: I went to Search options, typed in the keyword passwords, then your name. The search brought up your post here and your previous post.
