Samsung Laptop going into standby mode without warning

Q: Samsung Laptop going into standby mode without warning

So over the last few days, my Samsung laptop has been putting itself into standby mode without any warning. And I for the life of me cannot figure out why.

All options to turn off the computer have been set to never while it's plugged in, so it's not that. I suspected it was the laptop overheating for awhile, but I've got SpeedFan running and with the latest shut down the core temperatures were only around 55 degrees Celsius. I've seen it run up to 70 degrees when I really pushed it to investigate how hot it got, and that didn't prompt any response at all, except for the fan speeding up, and the laptop cooled down pretty fast when I let up on what I was doing.

Is there any other reason the laptop would shut down like this? I'm not the most computer smart in the world when it comes to the internal workings, so any help would be appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It says it was manufactured in march 2007, which makes it kinda old, but i would still like it to work, without anything too hard to do as im quite inexperience in saudering and other such things.

Hi there, i'm having a very frustrating problem.

My laptop Keeps going into standby mode.

I have set the Power Options to "NEVER" go into Standby etc, but these seem to do nothing.

Sometimes, i can't even boot the laptop up because it goes into standby straight away!

But other times when it is on, it goes into standby every so often, which is very annoying! Because i can't get it back on after that!

Tried: Changing Power Settings to Never etc...

Tried: On battery, and with power cable...

Please do not suggest scanning viruses etc because there is none.

I'd really really appreciate it if you can help as im doing some work on the web and i keep getting shut off!

Lets first see if it can be some software issue.

My laptop (the same one I've had for over two years) suddenly won't enter standby mode at all. When I close the laptop, it just hangs on the "entering standby mode" screen and drains the battery. When I open it up again, it shows that screen, and I have to press the power button to turn it off completely and start all over. When I try to put it in standby mode manually (by selecting it in the "turn off computer" options, the same thing happens.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is? It seemingly started out of the blue and I have no idea what to do. Every time I close it now, I have to completely shut it down, which is a pain.

Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Laptop won't enter standby mode

Try to go to power options and make sure that you have it set to Portable/Laptop. Also make sure that you have it set to go into stand by when you close the lid on your laptop.

To do that right click on your desktop, click properties, go to the screen savers tab, click power button, then check to make sure you have it set to Portable/Laptop, click the advanced tab and check if it is set to go into stand by when you close the lid.

Hope this helps; this is the only solution I can think of.

Hello. In my Dell Inspiron 15 - 5000 series, whenever I turnit on, the first times (2 or 3 times) that I push the Brightness up or down key, the laptop goes to standby mode immediately.
Obviously, after this, I need to log in to Windows again. I can happen up to 3 times in a row.
Any clues?

Hello and thanks in advance for any help.

I'm using a laptop with Windows7 to pump video out to my LG 50-inch TV via HDMI cable (typically AVI files via the VLC player).

I have been doing this for 2 years now with the exact same hardware and it has worked wonderfully.

The problem I am having is new: right in the middle of a video the TV will go blank (IE standby/sleep mode) and then the laptop will follow suit. I then have to go hit a button on the laptop to wake it up and the video will resume. I then have to hit the "input" button on the TV to get it to resume. Then it works fine again for sometimes hours or sometimes only minutes.

In other words my TV is suddenly and inexplicably putting my laptop to sleep through the HDMI cable. This happens randomly and daily and never used to happen at all.

If I disconnect the HDMI cable the problem does not occur on the laptop. I have tried changing the HDMI cable and the HDMI port at the back of the TV to no avail. I have disabled standby on both the TV and the laptop to no avail.

Is there perhaps a windows setting that can override HDMI input from the TV? I am at a bit of a loss...

Thanks for any help. Thaigrr

I seem to have fixed this one myself. I did a driver update search in device manager and it installed a newer driver and a new version of Nvidia Control Panel. I customized some settings in there and now the problem has gone

I tried using standby mode after reading about it in this forum. My computer is useless after waking up. I can't even close xp pro. I even have to use the computer power button to shut down windows. My harddrive light stays on all the time as well. My browser never opens, and after 5 minutes of waiting, I finally decide to shutdown and it can't. Is there something I need to know in order for standby to work. I have already looked at the bios but see nothing to change. I am afraid to try hybernate. Is this a software or hardware problem?
Life is good without using standby mode.

Good question: The one and only time I tried THAT function, I had to unplug the computer from the electrical source in order to get the monster to work! I've refused to use it since. Hibernate isn't quite as bad, but I find I always have to do a full shut down to get my computer to work anyway, possibly because I use log-in accounts - I don't know. These days, I either leave it on, or do a full shut down .Orange Blossom

Since then it decided not to boot up even in safemode. Re-installed XP Pro, driver and SP2.

Since installing SP2 system has been going to standby every 2 or 3 mins despite changing the various power settings. Suspect fans may not be working, never heard then running in the few weeks had this - was trying to get the video thing sorted for a friend - which could also be a fan thing?

Its has been running for over 4 hours before started going to standby. Any software I can utilise to tell me if the fans are working. Also does anyone know the procedure for getting inside the laptop to the fans - and maybe running the laptop to see if they work. Don't have a service manual and can't seem to find one on samsungs site.

I can see this heading to a repair shop this rate.

Hey guys! I'm new here and have a computer problem!

So this strange problem started about 2 weeks ago with my computer. My computer will be running all hunky dory and whatnot but then it just randomly goes into standby. At least I think it is stand by....the monitor will act as if the computer is off...the laser on my mouse is still sensitive but my computer will just sit there like a bump on a log with only the green light blinking. I have to turn it off and boot it back up to gain any control again.

At first I thought it was my command and conquer games. They had a bunch of corrupt files that defragmator would not fix for some reason. My computer was tending to go into standby while I was playing the games. So I uninstalled them all and poof the fragmented files were gone.

My computer seemed fine for a while but then it started going into standby again. It seems to mainly drop into stand by when I'm doing something with flash player....youtube....flash games ect.

So I thought it was a virus...so I ran my anti-virus. I have the latests version of Avast!. Well...while avast is running it drops into standby.

It's also gone into standby right at start up a few times now.

Those are the only times it's done it. So what could be wrong?

My computer specs should be..somewhere...filled them out in tregistration. XP

let me know if more info is needed. Thanks!

A:Solved: Computer going into standby without warning

Seems like it's getting worse now, couldn't boot it up right away this time without it dropping into standby. Had to give it a few minutes. I don;t think it's the powersupply though, b/c my computer will sit running just fine for long periods of time as long as I don't provoke the standby. The power supply did die once but it's been replaced.

This is a reopening of a previous thread that was closed because of no activity for 45 days.

My Samsung 713n also showed the not optimum mode message. I had another monitor that I swapped in and set the computer to that mode and then swapped the 713n back. No joy. I tried the 16 bit mode and the 32 bit mode. Still no joy. I then tried the reboot with F8 into safe mode suggested by a post in the previous thread. The screen was fine until after the safe mode was selected then went blank and "not optimum mode". Again the computer was still in 1280x1024 mode.

The fact that it was ok until safe mode was selected should be an indication of something, but what?

A thread on another site suggests the microchip in the monitor is toast.

Any thoughts on that?

FWIW: The monitor used to swap in and set the display mode was a Samsung 712n. The monitor on this computer is a Samsung 731b.

However, me thinks that my next monitor will NOT be a Samsung.

The WARNING IS: Samsung Monitors DO NOT WORK under HDMI with all Graphics Cards

To say I am disappointed with the Samsung Monitor I purchased recently is a gross understatement but in order to keep my post free of bad language, disappointed will have to do.

I have a Samsung LCD 21.5 B2230H / Model: LS22PUHKFW/XM

When I purchased the Monitor it did not come with an HDMI cable (I can see why now) I bought one but the HDMI connection would not work, I spoke with Samsung Service and they said it was the HDMI cable. I bought another HDMI Cable, an expessive BELKIN HDMI cable and it still did not work.
So I took the Monitor back to Samsung Service Centre, they had it a while and said it was repaired but did not even have the facility to test a HDMI Monitor with the computers at the service desk. I got the Monitor home and guess what? It still did not work!

As Samsung Malaysia PJ seem incapable of testing HDMI Monitors I returned the Monitor to the vendor, ALL-IT Hypermarket Sdn Bhd (Ikano Power Centre) yesterday. (Great Company by-the-way) ALTHOUGH THEY ESTIMATE SAMSUNG WILL TAKE 3 WEEKS TO GET MY MONITOR BACK!

At least ALL-IT had the facility to test the Monitor! They tried it with my PC, HDMI did not work, they tried it with their PC, and it worked. They changed the Graphics card in my PC, HDMI still did not work, they tried my PC with another HDMI Monitor, and it worked. All they seem to be able to prove is the HDMI connection of a Samsung B2230H does not work with an AS... Read more

You can't fix a failing hard-drive, I would suggest backup all your important files and data, and then run some hard-drive diagnostics to assess the situation better:

Run some hard-drive diagnostics and follow these steps:Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure
Find your hard-drive manufacturer and run their tests.

I've upgraded my XPS 13 9360 with the SAMSUNG 960 Pro a few weeks ago. It worked well with BIOS Rev. 1.0.7 in AHCI-Mode. Yesterday, I performed an BIOS-update to version 1.2.3. The SSD stopped working immediately (no bootable device). Changes of the BIOS settings (No SATA, AHCI, RAID) do not change that behaviour at all. It is even not possible to reinstall the OS, the installer show the SSD but does not allow to reinstall Windows 10. Dell support recommends to install the original hardware.
I think that is crazy. While looking for a solution for that problem I found that comparable problems happened with other BIOS upgrades for i.e. Dell XPS 13 9350 before. Dell has serious problems with NVMe SSDs.

today i received my new Dell XPS 13 9350. After Upgrading my BIOS to 1.19 and setting up my System I backup my Drive and restored it on the Samsung 950 Pro. But it doesn't boot!
Hour after hour i tested, tried in BIOS etc. and almost gave up. Even Booting from USB to reinstall or Booting Dell Diagnosis didn't worked. But the PM951 SSD worked fine. So lastly I downgraded to 1.0.5 and the 950 Pro worked.....
Question: Where can I find a newer BIOS than 1.0.5 but older than 1.19? I can't find any downloads.

A:[WARNING] Dell XPS 13 9350 BIOS 1.19 Upgrade won't Boot with Samsung 950 Pro anymore

Replacing the motherboard did not resolve the issue; however, I now have a better understanding as to what's happening:

(tested with 2 SSD's, and 2 HDD's)
(tested with original and replaced motherboard)
(tested with both legacy and uefi boot modes)
(tested with secure boot enabled/disabled)
(tested with original BIOS firmware version, and latest --JAN 5th)
SCENARIO #1 (SATA1 as boot drive, m.2 as secondary) :

-BIOS randomly does not detect SATA1 drive (does not show in System Configuration).
-"No boot device found"' error, followed by dell system check.

SCENARIO #2 (m.2 as boot drive, SATA1 as secondary):

-BIOS randomly does not detect SATA1 drive (does not show in System Configuration).
-Post BIOS, Dell logo with spinner animation will show for more than a minute, and then boot into windows.
-SATA1 drive will almost always show in Windows (even though BIOS does not report it).

SCENARIO #3 (m.2 as boot drive, SATA1 disabled in BIOS):

-Windows boots fast (less than 10-15 seconds)

The SATA1 drive is not always detected/initialized early on in the boot process (BIOS); it is often detected/initialized later on in the process (POST BIOS), but this causes a significant startup delay.
Disable SATA1 in BIOS.

The problem described above makes the SATA1 drive unusable (given its poor stability) as... Read more

Hello All,
Thank goodness for this forum..I enjoy it SO much ! I'm trying to find an answer for a friend of mine that recently upgraded his computer from windows 98 se to windows xp prof. . One problem I can't seem to solve for him is that I can't get his system to go into standby mode. I receive this error:
On a computer that has an ATI Rage Pro accelerated graphics port (AGP) 2X video adapter installed, when you attempt to put the computer into Standby mode, you may receive the following error message:

The device driver for the "ATI Technologies, Inc. 3D RAGE PRO AGP 2X" device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver. This behavior occurs because Windows XP does not provide power management support for this video adapter.

I've already updated his driver to this one: Windows XP Display Driver version 5.10.2600.6010
And I still receive the same message..I'm really wondering if it's something else causing it. Does anyone have any suggestions ? Thanks SO much !!

Hi, there nothing wrong with using stand by but personally i dont like to waste electricity. Hibernation would be a better option?

Every once and a while my computer seems to forgets to use the standby settings I have set up in my power options. If I defrag the disc or change the mode to never for awhile and then reset my options it works for a few weeks, then I'm doing it all over. Anyone have any ideas?

I have a new IBM Wireless keyboard which has 7 programmable keys. There is a default for each and a general setup for each. But, I would like to have one to be used for putting the system into Standby Mode. Does anyone know of the commands that will put the system into this mode. I have another wired keyboard that has this facility, and would like it to be included in the wireless keyboard.

A:Standby Mode

I'm assuming the keyboard came with some IBM software? If so see if you can reprogram any one of the keys to do a different tasks.

Hi all

I have this problem. When I click shutdown button in XP, I have only 2 options to select; shutdown and restart. Standby mode is shown there but it is frozen, I cannot click on that.

History dates back when a tech came to install ME version of windows on my PC which already had XP. After installing, I lost that standby mode. But then, I reinstalled everything and have installed clean copy of XP and W2K. But, even in the new XP that old problem persists. I need the standby mode as I leave my PC for hours and come back to work. Any help will be greately appreciated.

A:XP Standby mode

Is the "standby mode" you are referring to "sleep" ?

Reset the power setting options; see if it helps -
START | type power | select "edit power plan" | "restore defaults"

When/ how did Windows communicate this to you?

Run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor --> http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/win...e-advisor.aspx

A:CPU fan still on in standby mode

Standby will reduce power consumption by the system. Some items will be shut down like hard drives or monitor. CPU fans will keep running.

When I put my laptop into standby mode, programs shut as AIM shut down when I resume it. How do I prevent these programs from shutting down so they can stay on while the laptop is in standby mode?

I use standby mode quite often as a way of quickly restarting my machine during the day, whilst its not in use.

Normally when i select the standby option from within the XP home environment, my monitor turns off, my hard disk shuts down and then my fans go silent.

As of this morning, my fans will not shut down in standby mode. Everything else is as normal, and i can re awaken the machine as normal by pressing any key, yet during the whole time the fans continue to run.

Is there a power management setting that could have been reset? Or maybe something in the bios thats got effected somehow?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

A:Standby mode

I use the "standby" option all the time on my laptop, but never on my desktop.

I just tried using "standby" on my desktop. In doing so, the monitor goes blank and it seems the drives spin down, but my power supply is still on and the fan still spinning. Is this suppose to happen. I thought the PS should shut down and provide just minimal power....or is that hibernation mode?

A:Going into Standby Mode

What your looking for is S3 power management. It has to be set in the bios when XP is installed. It cannot be set after installing XP without reinstalling.

It's pretty recent and not all desktops support it.

How long can you have your computer in standby mode? I would like it for a day at a time. I am having a start problem with I guess the power usage, It sometimes come on, then shuts off after 3 or 4 seconds. Sometimes only once, but sometimes more than once. Cannot afford right now to get it fixed or to buy something, so maybe if I can keep it in standby it would not use the initial startup surge of power. Also, I though my mouse would take the system out of standby but it don't. I have to use the power button on the computer, (even though the mouse information says to use this device to take the computer out of standby, it is checked. Are there other areas that I should check to see if something is marked wrong for using the mouse to take the system out of standby? I have an optical mouse incase its needed to know.

A:standby mode

May I suggest using the PC's Hibernation mode...

Instead of clicking Stand By, then you click Start > Shut Down, on this screen hold down the Shift key and Stand By will change to Hibernate. The click Hibernate.

You can turn the PC off at the wall, move the unit and when you plug all back and hit the power button, All is restored as you left. Works the same as Stand By but powers off the machine.

If Hibernate is not available when you hold the shift key down, you need to activate this feature from here.

Press Start > Control Panel > Power Options > Click the Hibernate Tab > Click Enable Hibernation and click OK. Then follow the steps above.

Hope this is a better solution for you.

I need help with my old Gateway PC. I bought it in 2001. It is in permanent standby mode (the yellow light always on). I think it is shot, but my question is: Is there any way the data can be retrieved or is it lost forever?

My standby mode option is deactivated. I want to use that option because it's taking a very long time to boot everytime I shutdown my computer. please help.

A:I want to use standby mode but I can't

This is probably not the answer you want to hear, but standby will lead to more issues that it is worth.

Accept the reboot time - you'll be better off.

However, to try to enable it ... Go to the Power applet in the Control Panel. Check the settings there.
