Music Files No Longer Open With Double Click Unless WMP Is Already Open

Q: Music Files No Longer Open With Double Click Unless WMP Is Already Open

WOw. Weird problem going on here. I have no idea what may have caused this, but anyway, basically what is happening here is that now whenever I double click a music file from my "my music" folder nothing happens. It goes to the little hourglass thingy like its thinking for a split second and then nothing happens. The file won't open.

So this was pissing me off. I have no idea why I can't open my music files in a simple manner any longer.

The other thing is that they will open fine if WMP (my default player) is already open. If WMP is just sitting there in the background and I double click an audio file it opens without a problem, but if nothing is open and I double click on an MP3 it does nothing.

What's Going On Here???

Preferred Solution: Music Files No Longer Open With Double Click Unless WMP Is Already Open

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm having issues with both of my PCs at work. The one I'm posting about now has developed an annoying habit of not letting me double-click on my external hard drive icon to open it. I've been troubleshooting this issue for the past 2 days and I can't figure out what's causing this issue.

If I try to double-click and open an excel file it will give the error "There was a problem sending the command to the program."
I have tried everything from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3001579. I was able to get it kinda working with a registry hack that basically disables DDE. It will open but still gives
the error and the registry hack will be undone with a windows or office update. This just started happening this week for us. This particular machine wasn't showing this behavior then i installed about 16 windows updates. After those were installed, it stopped
working and even after removing all those updates it still isn't working.
I'm not sure what else to try at this point.

Somehow my Windows XP has changed.
Used to be double left click on a folder or file to open it - that suits me fine! How do I get it back to that from what it is now ? Please?
However now if I double left click I get the "search" folder option - like the one you can access by left clicking on "start" and left clicking on the search option - just so I'm explaining clearly I hope.
If I right click on a file/folder I get the context menu with "search" as the top option and "open" as the second or third down.

All help much appreciated,

It used to be that double clicking on an Office file would open the file. I've been a user of Logitech mice for years and always utilized the ability to program a button to act as a double-click (seems like a no-brainer to me and I wonder why it's not a standard feature or at least a default programming configuration when you have software to give you choices).

The newer versions of the higher-end Logitech mice and the SetPoint software they come with seem to have a problem with this feature being implemented in many XP dialog boxes, such as File - Open dialog boxes in Office 2003 programs. The button I program for a double-click doesn't do the job when I mouse over the file I want to open and hit the button. All it does it select the file, like a single-click would do. In order to use the programmed double-click button, I have to first select the file and THEN hit the programmed double-click button (defeating the entire purpose, of course).

The programmed double-click button works fine in many other places, but it also does NOT work in many other places, too. I've tried this with three different models of Logitech mice now, and different buttons on the, too, always with identical results. I'm using the newest version of SetPoint, 2.22.124.

Logitech refuses to acknowledge the problem exists and is suggesting I do a reinstallation of the software (or, uh, return the mouse for an exchange since it must be "defective").

Can someone please tell me if they have encountered or can replicate this problem? I've h... Read more

As of 4th July 2009 weekend my system has been operating quirky and buggy. In my troubles I've installed Avast Anitvirus. Now around that time, one day I can recall returning to my computer and it had shutdown on its own, although my system remains on idle the majority of the week by the way. Upon turning on the computer and booted up I got a notification window stating that Windows had been updated and restarted (turned off). At that point, when attempting to open a program (by clicking on any of my icons on the desktop) the computer would quirk and reboot. After several attempts, eventually it resulted in a continuous reboot, window would repeatedly restart. If I can remember correctly, in the process I got some prompts then eventually a dreaded blue screen perhaps something about windows couldnt find or load a file, i think it had a .dll extension. Well, in conclusion, thats when I decided to perform some tech procedures, check boot sequence, BIOS, the usual troubleshooting. Threw in the Windows XP for a Install repair. Correct. "Folder Options" refers to Windows Explorer. The "folders" within a program, like WLM, are under the control of the program. However I noticed that my version of WLM (2009) behaves the way you want without the "Reading" pane turned on. If I turn it on then a single click shows the email in the reading pane. If I turn it off, it takes a double click to open the email to view it. The reading pane is controlled via the "Layout" Viewing option.

I'm hoping that somebody has seen this issue and can help. I'm running RC 7100 and it's working great. The one problem I have occurs consistently after the machine has been running for about 24 hours. Suddenly you can no longer open files / folders or start programs by double clicking on the icon.

It works when first booted, then stops. If you reboot it works again.

I tried changing the options such that you can open with a single click, and it didn't fix the problem.

With the "General" tab selected, choose the item labelled "Single click to open an item (point to select)".

When I attempt to open folders in Windows XP by double-clicking - it instead gives me the option to rename the folder.

To go around this problem, i changed the folder option to single-click to open folder. But by doing so, i am not able to double-click to open subfolders within my Front Page website folder. Nor am I able to highlight multiple files/folders to drag to move or copy.

Therefore, I need to go back to double-click to open folders/files option.

How can this be corrected? Please advise!

My computer recently froze, and after rebooting it I can no longer double-click to open up any folders on my hard drive. Instead, after 1-click a search/command prompt opens up, and I must manually click 'open' to execute the program. Right-clicking does absolutely nothing at all--no search/command prompt or copy/edit function.
Here's what I've done so far:
1) I have checked my mouse settings. the preference for double-clicking is on, and I slowed the speed down as well.
2) I have run AVG anti-virus as well as Trend Micro and nothing has come up. (I also ran an online virus scan at Pandasecurity.com)
3) I have updated/run Spybot and again, nothing unusual.
4) I tried the following solution at dougknox: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_d...older_open.htm
and still nothing.
5) I tried a system restore to a few days prior, and again nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully this will be an acceptable forum to put this in. Honestly, I'm not sure where else.

So, here's the problem:

If I double-click on an Excel file, I get the following message: ""Windows cannot find /path/. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." Excel opens up fine, but without the workbook. If, within Excel, I open the file up using OfficeOrb -> Open, it opens just fine.

Why, you ask, did I not put this in the MS Office area? Because the same thing occurs with National Instruments LabView .vi files. Only difference is that the file opens in LabView. So, this suggests a Windows Explorer issue, not an MS Office issue.

Here's another strange thing: It doesn't really seem to have anything to do with any particular install. While I was working on finding a solution for this, somehow the same thing happened with my Word documents. Figuring it might be some kind of odd issue, I decided to roll back with a restore point. That fixed the Word issue, but not the Excel or LabView ones.

Now, I'd love to blame SP1, but the LabView one started before I installed SP1.

I've tried most of the simple solutions people have suggested for the Excel one (which annoys me far more than the LabView one, to be honest). My "Ignore other applications..." box is unchecked, to no avail. Most posts on this topic are with Office 2003 and XP, so they are of limited value (I suspect XP is the more important limitation).

Okay, so incredibly, I solved this. Hours and hours later, I solved it.

This is going to sound incredibly stupid, but the solution (for both applications) was as follows:

1) Go to the root directory for the executable for the program (example: C:/Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Office/Office12)
2) Right-click on the executable (in this case, EXCEL.EXE)
3) Select "Properties"
4) Click on the "Compatibility" tab
5) Unselect "Run this program as an administrator"

Yes, that's right. I solved a problem by not running the program as an administrator.

If anyone has a similar problem, but this is not the issue, let me know. I probably ran across an alternative while I was searching.

Now if I can just figure out how to tip my own scales for this solution...

Not sure about the drives, unless your talking about disk drives. But As for the hidden files and folders well if they were hidden and your not in the place they were hidden you wont notice them apear, Its just generally windows files that are hidden and any files that have been hidden by the user. I don't think you have any problems your just confused

I am running windows xp. I guess that I have messed up my folders options somehow. Anytime I double click a folder to open it, a blank message comes up in notepad that says --Access Denied. The only way that I can open folders now is to use windows explorer. I tried to use file types, but that did not change anything. Any ideas?

My suspicion, based on your description, is that your mouse buttons have been reversed. For example, if you are right-handed and the mouse's configuration was set to the default settings, then I believe that something has caused your mouse to switch to a left-handed person's configuration.

Click on the Start button and select the "Control Panel" option. Open up the "Mouse" control panel and search through the various tabs for an option that is labeled something like "Swap left and right mouse buttons". The option is going to be different depending on the type of mouse driver software that is installed, but it should be there somewhere. Once you have found it, change it as needed (i.e. if it is checked, then uncheck it and vice-versa). Click the Apply button followed by the OK button.

Not sure if this is correct place to post but here is my problem.

Recently, I purchased a built computer from a small PC shop. I had trouble connecting to the internet, so the technician who built it came and added a network adapter card and changed some settings. (Not sure what he did.) After he left, my drives were not detected at all, not in My Computer nor in Device Manager so I did a system restore, which got the drives back but then I had trouble connecting to the internet again. So, I undid the system restore and connected OK again. A day later, I noticed I could not open a disc by double clicking on the drive in My Computer. I have two optical drives and it?s the same with both drives. I can right click and open to view files but not play disc. ( Movie nor music.) I can play them through the autoplay dialogue box though. I went into safe mode and tried and they will play in there by double clicking the drive.
What happens when I try to play by double clicking the drive is I got a message first saying, ?The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs Control Panel.? I checked the Default Programs and they were set properly. Then, when I tried double clicking the drives again, got a different message. This time saying, ?Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access thi... Read more

Hi all! I have this so called virus/worm "VBS/Solow-B" or FS6519.dll.vbs and I managed to delete it by searching thru the net on how to manually delete this worm. Unfortunately after deleting this I can't open my Drive C using double click unless I used right click then choose open then it will open. Here is the error message that came up. The window name is "Windows Script Host" the message is Can not find script file "C:\FS6519.dll.vbs". How do I fix this so that I can use the double click again to open my Drive C:. Thanks in advance.

BTW I know this is too much too ask but how can I clean/remove the virus/worm on my flash drive? I think I got the virus from other pc using my flash drive then infected my other pc. Thanks again hoping for a positive response with my problem.

I have this problem too. Previously I could highlight (example) six text files, right click, choose open and voila! they all opened. Now I'm forced to open them one by one. Hope you can help.

I can't open word documents by double clicking the document file. When i do this, i get an error message 'not enough memory or disk space to run outlook' (although i am not trying to open outlook!)

The only way i can open documents is to open word 2007 and then open documents through there.
the file associations are all set to word.

This problem started because i could not choose word as my default programme for docx files. i changed the programme file name from WINWORD.EXE. to WORD.EXE. and i managed to set the default programme as word, but now i have this problem.

A:can't double click to open word documents

Have you gone into the Control Panel's Default Programs menu and made sure that Word has all of the required defaults?

Control Panel (All Items) > Default Programs > Set your default programs

If that doesn't help, you can set the default for a particular program through the file associations menu.

Control Panel (All Items) > Default Programs > Set Associations

That should atleast allow you to cause .doc, .docx and all other Word related file types to open in Word 2007.

A:Double click will not open file or messages

Copy the following text into Notepad. Change the Save AS Type to All Files and save it as a .reg file (ex) LeftClick.reg to your Desktop and then double click the file and click OK to import it into the Registry.

Initially, whenever I double clicked any drive icon, it denied access and my anti-virus (AOL Active Virus Shield) showed a warning (not-a-virus: trojan). I treated the threats (deleting infected files).

After that, whenever I double clicked any drive icon, it just opened an "Open With" box. I created a new open action using Windows Explorer as the application.

But now, it just says "action denied". I have to right click the drive and select open from the menu to open any drive. Folders and everything else work fine.

By the way, I know there was a topic called "double clicking folders opens search window" but the links in that topic just generate an error message...

Help please. Thank you in advance.

A:Double Click Doesn't Open Drives

Run CHKDSK on that drive and try Doug Knox's folder_open.vbs if you continue to have problems.Always back up your registry before making any changes. If you are not familiar with working in the registry, then you should NOT attempt to make any changes on your own. Improper changes to the registry could adversely affect your computer and render it inoperable. If the above does not resolve the issue then your symptoms could be related to a flash drive infection. In that case download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program. The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.Reboot your computer when done.

Hello,Over the last week or so I have encountered a problem which I have been unable to solve.
I use a seperate SDD on which I play DCS World Games .Win7 is also on that disk as part of a dual boot but here it only serves to operate the games and ancilliaries.
I have found that when clicking on 'Computer' in the Start Menu or the icon on Desktop ; there is no response and I cannot gain access to computer on on that disk.
I have run various malware, anti virus programs but all seems clear . I have formatted and reinstalled Win7 and the games from DCS. At first all was well but the problem has returned . I should have mentioned that last week the problen extended to 'Task Manager' ans 'Waste Basket' ; neither would open to a double click.

The fact that the problem has returned makes me believe that a virus is high on the list of suspects but I cannot locate it.

Could you please help me with this?

I'm working on a brand new HP laptop with Vista Home Premium, Firefox 2 and a Logitech MX 510 optical mouse.

The problem is that, since this new laptop, I have to double click on links with the scroll wheel to open the link in a new tab. Simple clicking has no effect (but should open the link in a new tab).

I've passed thru the "about.config" page, finding nothing.

I have the Logitech "Mouse and Keyboard settings" program installed, although it's not required for that mouse.

Any idea on what causes the problem, and how to solve it?
