Can I add a NVMe - M.2 SSD to Thinkpad x1 Extreme?

Q: Can I add a NVMe - M.2 SSD to Thinkpad x1 Extreme?

I have a Thinkpad X1 Extreme (20MFX002US) on order. It has one of the two M.2 SSD bays not used. I was hoping I could add a second drive. They are expensive so I thought I'd better check first to see if it will work in this machine before I order it. I am NOT doing RAID with the second drive. I just want the machine to recognize it for added storage. This is running Windows 10. Here is the drive I was considering:Samsung 970 PRO Series - 1TB PCIe NVMe - M.2

Preferred Solution: Can I add a NVMe - M.2 SSD to Thinkpad x1 Extreme?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,  According to the specifications sheet, X1 Extreme supports both Sata and Nvme Ssd's. https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20X1%20Extreme/ThinkPad_X1_Extreme_Platfo... My machine comes with an Nvme Ssd. It would be OK to add an additional Sata Ssd in the free slot, right? And use both. (Just checking, before I buy).  Thanks!Adrian

Dear support, I just received my new laptop recently and I would like to know how to perform a secure erase (change of encryption key) on the NVme SSD that came with the laptop. A secure erase should instruct the SSD to change the encryption key stored on the SSD itself, and should be the best way to perform a full format of the data on the disk. My preferred way to perform the Secure Erase would have been using the Bios option "Security -> Disk Encryption HDD" [R1]. However, this option was not available on my BIOS, neither on the pre-installed version (1.08) nor in the newest version (1.19). Therefore I followed the suggested option to try to activate this option in the BIOS [R2]. Afterwards the "Security -> Disk Encryption HDD" was still not visible on my BIOS menus. I have also tried creating an USB with the Lenovo's DrvErase [R3] software. In this case I got a message from the software stating that my system or BIOS are not compatoble with DrvErase. Using Linux, it is possible to instruct the disk to perform a secure erase by changing the encryption key [R4]. I have done this in the past and it worked. However, I am hesitant to follow this procedure on a new (and expensive) laptop. Therefore, I woule like to ask: Q1) What is the method suggested by Lenovo to perform a Secure Erase on X1 Extreme (type: 20MG) or P1 laptops?Note: from [R5] and [R6], I believe that P1 laptops are also affected Q2) If I go through and instruct the SSD disk ... See subject.  Ever since the BIOS upgrade, the dock no longer crashes.  Two days running now with no problems; prior to the upgrade it would crash routinely when connecting via USB-C.  I had to employ the unsavoury workaround of connecting the laptop to a charger and connecting it to the dock via the USB-A port using the USB-A to USB-C adaptor supplied.  Now I'm connecting via USB-C cable only. In fact, I'd given up on using the dock at all and had it just sitting there.  I decided to give it another go after reading that BIOS v1.19 fixed instances of BSODs occuring when connected to an external monitor (which I did experience now and again when connecting to an external monitor via HDMI i.e. not via dock).    Dock Type : 40AFX1E Type : 20MF

I'm having issues installing linux on my second NVMe drive because of this bug: https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/128422/one-of-two-identical-m2-nvme-drives-disabling-due-t... This is a known issue with Intel's firmware and they have issued an update:https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28320/Known-Issue-Intel-SSD-760p-Pro-7600p-Series-SubNQN-C... However, the NVMe Firmware Update Utility seems to not include this most recent version. Is there any timetable for when this will be merged in to Lenovo's firmware? I've read that if the drive comes from an OEM like Lenovo we should wait until they issue their own firmware -Gabe

Hello, I've been using Thinkpad X1 Extreme for the past 1.5 months. And now speakers(or only right one I believe) started having an issue with crackled/noise sound on high frequencies. It's almost unusable to listen something with speakers because of how painfull it to the ears.  Is there anything possible to do with it to fix it? Or replace internal speaker. Recording with sound:https://www.dropbox.com/s/tjqzczipq45xyh1/video_2019-07-29_15-03-27.mp4?dl=0

For several reasons i need it to be equipped with a third party SSD, so i chose the (cheaper) 128gb SSD configuration. After i've placed the order I've started wondering if the M.2 SATA3 configuration i've choose could mean that the laptop i've ordered could not support NVMe.Could someone please tell me that the SATA3 choice affects only the SSD part and that i'll be able to mount correctly a M.2 SSD NVMe? thanks

I recently updated to the new bios, 1.30, that adds RAID support for the Thinkpad P50.My P50 came with 2x pcie nvme 512gb m.2 drives. (I think they ship with the sm951, but not 100% sure) Upon activating raid in the bios, I can select "M.2 SSD" as the mode, and successfuly create a raid volume from the 2 drives. The new raid volume shows up in the boot manager and appears to be healthy. Macrium Reflect can even see and clone to the Raid volume. However the installer for Windows 7, 8, or 10 cannot see the Raid volume. That depends.  Are we spending your money or mine?

Given your use case I'd probably use the extra $ to go with a 500GB 2.5" SSD.  Then again, I'm a spec snob and might not be able to resist the NVMe drive.

As you've already figured out, the 470 only uses 2 PCIe lanes so that limits the NVMe SSD to something like 1700MB/sec.  The SATA unit would be more like 500MB/sec or so.  In practice, you'd probably never notice a difference.

Hi, I am planing to buy a thinkpad X280 with the cheapest storage selection, and then upgrade SSD myself. The cheapest storage option for X280 is 128GB SSD SATA.Will I be able to upgrade SSD by simply replacing it with a larger and faster SSD? For example 1TB SSD PCIe-NVME? In my understanding that M.2 SATA and M.2 PCIe-NVME are different:M.2 SATA connects to SATA bus and using AHCI standard.M.2 PCIe-NVME connects to PICe bus and using NVME standard. This can get much faster speed than M.2 SATA SSD. So, it seems that if I buy X280 with 128GB SSD SATA selection, I may not be able to upgrade it to any PCIe-NVME SSD.Please, can someone confirm this? Regards,Shuo

Hello all,I am in the process of upgrading my my ThinkPad T440s and T450. After reading in several articles that it?s possible to remove the WWAN LTE/4G card and replace this with a M.2.2242 (22mm) NVMe PCI-e SSD I started looking for the most suitable M.2 2242 SSD to build in my T440s an in to the T450 After doing some research I ended up buying 2 Toshiba RC100 SSD. To fit in the M.2. PCI-e slots in the above mentioned ThinkPads. These are to be used as Boot disks.(And 2 SamSung 860EVO 250GB to build in the SATA3 connections for storage.)Main reasons:-This Toshiba drive is PCIe 3.0 using only two lanes, rather than the four that the faster drives employ. This is reducing energy consumption and minimizes the risk of overheating (and limits performance).-Due to this limited performance it?s not the fastest (pretty slow vor NVMe) but still super fast compared to SATA3 SSD on 6GB/sec. To me the Toshiba RC100 seemed to be the ideal NVMe SSD to place in my T440s and my T450. I ran in to trouble when installing M.2. Hi, first time posting and I'd like to report a serious issue rendering the new X270 critically unstable. There's an issue with the SSD after it enters low power D3 state. After it happens, the drive (or controller) refuses to wake up. Entering D3 seems to be due to relative inactivity. Also, upgrading BIOS to 1.09 doesn't help. I can get this couple of times a day so it makes the X270 unreliable for work. This is triggering regardless of having power adapter plugged in or unplugged and it seems only related to the drive going to sleep. One time I got BSOD on Windows was when I was copying files between two external HDDs (so the internal drive wasn't busy). On Windows this results with BSOD saying it can't save core dump because of memory or drive error. Linux is little more informative about what happens and the system doesn't die straight away because it caches quite a lot of the data read from the drive (that excessive caching is also why the drive is likely to go to sleep more often). For last couple of days I was running with dmesg -wH in the background. The drive always fails the same way: [Mar21 01:31] nvme 0000:04:00.0: controller is down; will reset: CSTS=0xffffffff, PCI_STATUS=0xffff
