Smartphone wifi problems

Q: Smartphone wifi problems

My girlfriend just got a Motorola Triumph today, with Virgin Mobile as the carrier. Since we're in a bad spot for internet connectivity with Virgin Mobile's network, we decided to try connecting the phone to our wireless router. The phone connected just fine, but when we tried to go to any websites, it kept saying it couldn't connect to the site. We've tried restarting the phone and reactivating it, as well as turning airplane mode on and off as I have seen working on a few other forums. The 3G works all right as long as we don't wander in to any bad spots, but the wifi refuses to work at all. My dad also has a Blackberry through Sprint I think, and that also refuses to work with our wireless routers. We have two routers, both set to open, so it's not an issue of the wrong password or anything. Laptops can connect wirelessly just fine. SSID broadcast for the routers is turned on. We've tried restarting the routers as well. The two routers are a Linksys and a Belkin (unsure of the models at the moment). If anyone has any ideas to try or any advice to offer, it would be much appreciated. If any more information is needed, I'll be happy to provide it as soon as I can. Thanks in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am looking to replace my tired Linksys WRT54G router that is about 10 years old. I love the router, and its even better with DD-WRT on it, but I'm starting to have troubles with the wifi dropping all the connects for a couple seconds when running all my wireless devices. I have 3 smart phones, 2 tablets, 1 Chromecast, a smart TV, and Roku + a laptop or 3 in my house right now, and it seems like its getting to be a bit much for it.
I have had to completely re-flash the firmware twice this year to get the wifi working again, so I'm thinking its time for replacement.
I have been thinking about just getting the new WRT54GL for $50, but I'm also thinking it might be a good idea to upgrade the wifi technology past wireless G .
I'm wondering if my Tablet (Nexu 9), and our smartphones (Razr HD Max) along with the Chromecast will take advantage of the new wireless standards and higher speeds or not? If they will can someone recomend a decent wireless router that takes DD-WRT nicely in the sub-$100 range? Thanks!

A:Looking for new Wifi Router - Will Tablet/Smartphone take advantage of new wifi Standards?

I been programming in Android/Linux since 2010 and there is code that supports VHT is Very High Throughput. Right now the standards are HT is High Throughput .

As for DD-WRT firmware is like your overclocking your router pushing it beyond the OEM limits. I use to use DD-WRT but had quit many years ago since the routers that used that firmware would fail too much.

So best to buy a better business type enterprise router wired then you can use WiFi router as AP or just get WiFi AP(access point). To me WiFi Router is also Wired Router, but to use just a wired router and use WiFi AP through a switch is better. If one or the other goes you can easy replace them. Where as if the WiFi Router fails you would need to replace it.

If you really want to use DD-WRT then Look at Buffalo WiFi Routers some come pre-installed with DD-WRT on them. Frankly you really don't need DD-WRT today because newer routers or WiFi routers are much better built and offer much more power NPU = network processor units and 128, 256, 512, 1GB of RAM some have Dual Cores.

My laptop works fine on my network for 80% of the time but the rest of the time I get yellow triangle and the system says limited access. The annoying bit is that when this happens my smartphone is still connected to my wifi network and works perfectly so I can only assume there is a fault on the laptop. I take out the network adapter plug then plug it in and the laptop usually reconnects but sometimes it can take about half an hour!

My laptop is an acer aspire6935 and the operating system is windowsvista home premium. The wireless router is connected to a desktop via a yellow data cable.

Any Help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

these are powerlines connecting between you and the router via the house electrical system - is that correct ?
if not what are they

do you have another PC - you can try on the same cable connection ?

would you post the following tests when the internet is working OK, and then repeat ALL the tests when the internet disconnects.
Make sure you also indicate on the reply which tests are for what condition.

ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

This should also work for windows 8
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into note... Read more

Im using a 17" Lenovo y700 ideapad laptop. Recently (maybe 4-6weeks-ish) my wifi becomes disabled wheneve it loses connection to the modem or disconnect from the modem, by:1) my modem restarts (either manual restart or due to power outage)2) after I switch off from using my iphone's hotspot. The wifi icon at the network tab is greyed out -> as if it was disabled, but clicking it does not do anything.I can fiddle with the airplane mode but that doesnt change anything. The problem does get rectify after restarting - but its a real hassle having to restart everything after a modem reboot or after using my phone's hotspot - just to get the wifi re-enabled.During this time the device is listed as 'Enabled' in device manager, and a scan does not detect a problem with the wifi card/driver. This does not occur every time, there doesnt seem to be a specific pattern to the error occuring. Anyone having the same problem? Solutions?

I'm just trying to set up my first wireless network. I've been all over the net today and can find nothing that works or matches my configuration. Ad Hocs seem to be for connecting computers, and routers are for dial up or broadband.

What I have is a desktop running XP with a wireless card. I have a wireless printer and a wireless media player. I have a SMC router, but I see no way to configure it, when its plugged it I don't see it anywhere.

My Acer Liquid E Smartphone is my modem. I have no hardline.

I have run the wizard on the desktop, but my printer cannot see the network I created, and when I list wireless networks available to connect to, my neighbours shows up but the one I created does not.

What am I missing? If someone can point me at a step by step tutorial (not video please, my cell service is not good enough for streaming video) I'd be ecstatic!

So I just got a Verizon xv6700 smartphone from work. I got it on my plan and all that jazz and it works great. I plugged it into my computer running Vista Business 32-bit and it popped up the 1GB SD card I had and let me drag things onto it. Better yet, I downloaded the Windows Mobile Device Center goodness and got it synced up with my Outlook 2007. It was great, syncing email, contacts and calendar via USB.

So a few weeks ago, I plug it in and get nothing. It makes the USB noise, and I go into the Device Manager and find 'Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter' under the Network Adapters section...why the heck does it think my phone is a Network Adapter? Worse, it won't show up in Windows Explorer, won't show up in the Device Center for syncing and won't give me any way to access it...

What is going on? How does it just stop working? I tried reinstalling a handful of times, uninstalling the driver, downloading phone updates, to no avail. It just plain flat out stopped working. Funny thing is I can sync it fine with my XP box running Active Sync...any help on this would be much appreciated so I can get my life synced again.

I have a PC connected to a smc router (smc networks wbr14-g2) I have my internet modem connected to this router so I can have a strong wifi connection (my internet modem is pretty far away).

I configured the wifi signal, I added a WEP key, etc. Now I can connect my smartphone easily and has a strong internet connection, but my PC doesn't, it recognizes the signal, it connects to it, but it tells me that I have no internet access.

It seems strange to me that my smartphone can connect to internet, even play netflix, but my PC can't.

Any tips?

I have windows 7 operating system.

We have had WiFi for about 10 days now, and everything was ok until yesterday. WiFi went down, for some reason. We have 2 desktops PCs connected to router via cables, and 2 smartphones (Google Nexus S running Android 4.0.3 and Nokia N96 running old Symbian, if it matters) that go with without wires. The thing is, when my brother, turns on his PC, WiFi doesn't work for any of us, not on my PC nor on any smartphone, or his PC. When he shuts his PC down, it's all OK again. He did install (automatic) Windows Update.
Why is this all of a sudden happening? And how do we fix it?

Modem model: Speedtouch Thompson 510i
Router model: TP-LINK TL-W340G

I have recently gotten a new Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone. I've never had one before. So, I'm trying to figure out how to use it so that I don't accidentally get charge for something not necessarily bad as much as like "accidentally banging your finger with a hammer". Right now, it appears to automatically access the Wi-Fi when it's in range and I'm installing free apps. Will I need to keep an eye on that so that it doesn't download apps (or additional app data) via a cell tower? (I did find a setting called "Wi-Fi Calling Settings" under which I can select Wi-Fi Prefered, Wi-Fi Only, Cellular Prefered.) There's, also, a gps on mine. I've found Google Maps, Google Latitude, Navigation, and TeleNav GPS Navigating that can use the gps in one way or another. How far into those programs can I use the gps before I start getting charged for data usage? Is there anything else I need to be careful of so that I don't end up surprised at the end of the billing cycle?

A:Which is the best smartphone to buy?

The Galaxy S4 is basically equivalent to the HTC One. The HTC One though, has a better camera and has an aluminum shell. The S4 has a more mediocre camera and a plastic shell (cheaper build quality). They both have basically the same screen. I own an iPhone 5 and love it. The OS is just becoming stale though, and Android (on the S4 and HTC One) is more for power users. iOS (iPhone) is geared more toward rookies who dont know what they are doing since it is so simple. I would take the Xperia Z off of your list since it doesnt match up.

Check out TechSpots' reviews on all three phones:

HTC One: http://www.techspot.com/products/smartphones/htc-one.87473/ (I cannot find a full review on TS and posting another sites review would be considered kind of bias)

A:How to use VPN connection on a smartphone?

What application are you using to establish the VPN connection? A VPN connection should allow a remote device outside the LAN act as if it was and should be able to access resources limited only to that LAN the same way as if it was connected to it.

Just a couple of questions to help us give you the best support:

What phone are you using and what OS does it have (Android, iOS... etc? )

What VPN application are you using on the server to initiate the remote connection?

What is the OS of the home computer you wish to access and is there a shared folder set? If so what are the sharing permissions applied?

Don't worry if you can't answer all the questions, we will do our best with the information provided

A:Syncing smartphone

Are these Android phones? If so, your contact info should be synced to your Gmail account. Log into the new phone with the same account and that should be copied over. To move pictures, you'll need to upload them to a service or connect your phone to your computer and copy them over.

If the pictures are important, you should have a backup anyway. A smartphone is just a pocket-sized computer. It can crash, fail, etc. and has the added bonus of being easily lost or dropped.

Given the wide diversity of data connections people get on their smartphones, I was wondering if developers who know they will download apps, images, movies, etc to phones have any guidelines or website forums specifically addressing considerations like:
what's the largest file you should attempt to download?
what considerations are there for servers used for downloading?
Are there various protocols that are better/worse for performing large downloads? or,
do different hosting services use different time-out parameters that would cause large downloads to fail?

Hi all

I have developed an Engineering Software App for SmartPhones and am expecting to receive big orders soon.

I will make the software available (a) as a download, (b) on the various online app stores and (c) I will sell the software pre-bundled onto the actual SmartPhone Device and ship to clients.

Question: As opposed to buying off the shelf SmartPhones wrt case (c) above, I'd be very interested in being connected to actual Smartphone Manufacturers (People with an actual Manufacturing factory - Not a wholesaler).

I'd be looking for Real Factory Based Manufacturers who could:

(1) Make a phone specifically for my customers. The main thing here would be to have a unique looking exterior even if they base the phone on the chassis and interior of an existing phone.
(2) Handle all the Hardware Registration and Licencing Procedures. I would not want to go through the trouble of having the hardware tested and approved for usage.
(3) Provide proof that all Hardware is legal for usage internationally
(4) Work with me to ensure that my Software is embedded onto the Device Software such that even a Hard Reset of the Device will NOT remove my software.

Google searches for SmartPhone Manufacturers always throws up SmartPhone Wholesalers, Alibaba, etc. I do not wish to deal with such. I will only deal with an actual SmartPhone Factory.

Appreciate any and all introductions to above.

Thanks. Tony.

Hello, I have an interesting idea, and I am curious if it can be done.

I think it would be pretty cool if I could play one of my PC games on my smart phone. I'm not sure how practical that would be, but none the less I would like to try it. Here are my thoughts on how to accomplish the task:

Input for one, could be accomplished by using a Bluetooth enabled gamepad that pairs with your phone. That way you can go beyond touch screen input for more complex games.

Then there is the small display to consider. While it is ideal for smaller scaled games, it isn't ideal for PC games where they are often very detailed and have complex user interfaces. I thought maybe you could use one of those headsets they use for things like Oculus Rift to narrow in the display. That would make it more ideal.

Now the tricky part, remoting to your PC so you can play the game. From what I understand, remoting is accomplished using RDP, which Windows, Apple and Linux all use. So in theory, you could easily remote to your computer to play a game. You could write a custom application for your smart phone to remote in and send input from the gamepad to your PC.

Now the issue of connectivity. PCs these days can easily render graphics in 1080p, and in some cases 4k. Now over a remote connection (using RDP), I am not sure the protocol can process that kind of data fast enough for consistent frame rates on the client (smart phone). You would likely have to compress the frames for faster process... Read more

I need to export or otherwise copy my contacts from my smartphone to my desktop PC, but can't figure out how to do it..

My smartphone used to sync with the office Exchange Server, but ideally I now want to sync my Outlook contacts with my home PC using standalone Outlook 2003. My PC runs XP SP3 and ActiveSync 4.5. Smartphone is Windows Mobile 6 Standard.

It looks as if I cannot sync Exchage Server contacts to standalone Outlook - if I try to switch to synching with Outlook it tells me the contacts on my phone will be deleted. Is there a safe way of doing this? I would rather retype all my contacts from the phone screen than risk losing them - I can no longer access my former office's Exchange Server.

If I can't use ActiveSync, is there a way of exporting contacts in bulk from Outlook on Windows Mobile?

Thanks for any help - Firepig

Hi 7forums!
I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installed on my laptop(from factory). Till few days ago, I could turn it into Hotspot via the stock Hotspot app & used to connect my android smartphone for normal wifi file transfers. But now that app by which I used to create hotspot is missing somehow(coz I can't find it installed apps). So, I give a try to other hotspot creators(virtual hotspot, Wifi hotspot creator setup, etc)... None of them worked. So, I created ad-hoc but soon learned that android phones don't connect to ad-hoc networks. An app called "mHotspot" shows even a problem with my drivers & asked to restore it but in vain. At last...I searched the net about file sharing methods but most of them state that phone must be connected to computer.

My laptop only has essential softwares by factory & I haven't modified any of 'em.

So please if u have that stock hotspot app(black-ish background with only two options: SSID & Password & Start button), kindly share it here.

Please help me to create wifi hotspot on my laptop so that I can connect my phone the usual way like before:crying:

Thanks in advance...

I am having an annoying and frequent problem with firefox loading websites using smartphone layout. Roughly 30% of the time it will load a page with full screen width images and text that spans the entire screen.
Reloading will sometimes bring it back to normal browser window display, other times it takes several reloads to get it right.
It's not limited to any particular pages, a page will load perfectly fine once, then the next time it loads up wrong.

I've played with user agents, updated, reloaded, reinstalled firefox and the problem persists, any ideas?

A:Firefox loading like a smartphone

I'd reset the FF User Agent to default and delete the cache, if it still happens even after a force-refresh, look for a Desktop link, there's often one at the bottom of the page.

If it persists and you're sure your User Agent is at default and you're sure aren't blocking correct browser capabilities detection with an extension, report it to the site owners.
