Thinkpad T460s TrackPoint Cap

Q: Thinkpad T460s TrackPoint Cap

Hiseems T460s (20F9) is wors than my previous laptop T420s, I can't move it so freely as before. At certain point the mouse cursor just stops moving and have to use force with a finger to make it move anywhere. I noticed the cap hole is now much smaller than f.ex. T420s, perhaps this is the reason for it. I found a link on the net to make the movement possible better;http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/thinkpad-t460s-trackpoint-mod.790347/In addition, previously there came several Caps with the laptop, now there is not a single extra one. So I don't dare to try the fix above link before I have at least one extra cap in case something goes wrong. So the question is what is the product code for the Thinkpad T460s Trackpoint Cap collection? I tried to look in the net, hard to find. I used Lenovoguickpick and the possible code might be this;ThinkPad Super Low Profile TrackPoint Cap Set (Part # 4XH0L55146)Then again googling that with amazon produces no results so can't get those anywhere. Any help appreciated, Thank You.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've been experiencing a steady slowdown over the past several months with the pointer speed and increased effort for the Trackpoint on my T460s. I came across an older post that pointed me to the solution which was to replace the Trackpoint nib (red button) with a new one. Apparently, the material becomes stiffer over time which increases the amount of pressure required to move the pointer. My settings(pointer speed, trackpoint speed), which were maxed out before, are now dialed back several notches. The replacement nibs (low profile) are available as an accessory on the Lenovo store. Hope this helps.

I wasted a frustrating 40 minutes with Lenovo tech support trying to elicit answers to these simple questions. Trackpoint Historically, Linux support for Trackpoints has been hit or miss. Consider these two FRU IDs: 40K9400 is pre-Lenovo IBM USB keyboard with Ultranav (pad and Trackpoint). It is essentially impossible to change the Trackpoint sensitivity in Linux. It just shows up as a (very stiff) PS2 mouse. 55Y9003 (using it now) is a Lenovo USB keyboard with only Trackpoint. When plugged in, shows a "sensitivity" file on sysfs, where you can write 255 to get a good pliable mouse. On my current keyboard the path is /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.0/usb2/2-2/2-2:1.1/0003:17EF:6009.0056/sensitivity (will change after each USB plugin). Without the sensitivity tweak, Trackpoints are terrible in Linux, as bad as the pathetic lookalikes on HP and Dell and Toshiba laptops. A lot of people buy Thinkpads for Trackpoint and Linux. Lenovo should publish details of Trackpoint chipset and how to reliably control sensitivity from Linux. I tested the first Trackpoint before it was released to market, and contributed code to a Linux trackpoint driver, so I feel strongly about this. Take away the Trackpoint in Linux and there's no good reason for me to choose T460 over MBP15.  Storage options Apparently T460s has a full-length mSATA connector on the motherboard, but no 2.5 inch HDD/SSD bay. Good afternoon all,
We have an older IBM thinkpad 600x, that my husband uses to play simple off line games and read a few emails. The past few days when booting we are getting the error #08611.
From what I have been able to find I believe that this has something to do with the trackpoint.
We use a wireless mouse with this so do not need the track point. Can someone please tell me how to disable the trackpoint?
Thanks!!!
I wish a Happy & prosperous 2010 to all.

Now that the 5th gen Thinkpad is here, the decline of the trackpoint becomes ever clearer.  Frankly, most of us would not be buying Thinkpads if they didn't have the trackpoint.  That's the X1's main advantage.  But Lenovo keeps making it worse.  First, the trackpoint caps that will fit the gen 4 and 5 come in only one, unpopular, variant and you can't get the soft rim version.  But more importantly, Lenovo keeps on degrading the software control of the trackpoint.  It used to be that you could adjust the sensitivity of the trackpoint, making it more or less stiff.  Even the softest setting was inadequate but it was something.  In the 5gen there is no option to change the stiffness or responsiveness of the trackpoint's movements at all.  Lenovo: hear your customers!! Please make the trackpoint MORE not less adjustable.

Unless I am not using it properly, I find the trackpoint on my Dell Latitudes and the Thiankpad T570 (which I had to return as it arrived damaged!) to be impossible to use. It is not sensitive enough for me and I find that too much force is needed to move the cursor, partly because you do not feel any movement when you press it. Am I missing something or is it an immediately love it or hate it thing? Also I am interested to know, do any users aged in their 30s and 20s use the trackpoint? I am in my 40s and (it may be a coincidence) everyone i know below 40 never uses their trackpoint. I would love to loose the trackpoint (unless, as i say, I am missing something) and free up the button space for a nice large trackpad like the XPS 15.

Good Day!I'm from the Philippines and I bought a refurbished thinkpad p50 from the US at 2016 and I extended its NBD warranty until June 1, 2018. The touchpad and trackpad suddenly stopped working a few weeks ago and it seems that the bios can't recognize them. The wifi reception seems to have also weaken, requiring me to be closer to the wifi source than before. I also tried reinstalling the drivers but it can't still identify the two pointing device. I'm actually planning to ship it to the US this week before my NBD warranty expires, but I don't know anyone from the US right now to avail the NBD service. May I know which address must I send it to, and the proper procedures to avail the repairs?I already spent $170 for the warranty extension last year, and I'll be spending another $100 for the DHL shipping to the US. May I also know if Lenovo will answer the shipping back to my country, since if not, I'll be spending another $100 for it to be shipped back to the Philippines?I also tried calling the service center from the US but I kept on having long calls with no response. Thanks!

Hello, I have a thinkpad X240. The Trackpoint button (nipple) has never worked since I've had it. The computer used to have Windows 8.1, however now it has been upgraded to Windows 10. The trackpoint button still did not work after the upgrade. I have tried updating the BIOS to the latest version, with still no change. The keyboard was recently replaced by a Lenovo tech as some keys stopped working properly, which means that the trackpoint button was replaced too. However, it still does not work. I have tried completely removing and re-installing the Synaptics driver from the lenovo website. The Trackpoint button shows as "Enabled" in the BIOS. Below is a screenshot of the "Thinkpad" tab in the mouse section of the control panel. I am guessing that there is supposed to be another option under the "Pointing options" dropdown menu which allows the Trackpoint button to be enabled.  If anybody has any suggestions as to how I can get it working, that would be appreciated.  Thank you

In that screen trackpoint stops working and I do not have possibility to select the button to force applications to stop. How can I get trackpoint working also in that screen during restart?

I've owned ThinkPad laptops for the past 20 years.  My most recent purchase was a ThinkPad X1 Yoga running Windows 10.  My prior version was a ThinkPad Edge 520 with Windows 7. What I've noticed is that the "sensitivity" option is no longer available for the TrackPoint mouse.  I've attached a screenshot of the old Ultranav utility which allowed for the sensitivity to be adjusted from Light to Heavy touch.  On the new version, there is only the option to adjust the speed from Slow to Fast (which was also available on the prior version). I have no idea what the sensitivity is set by default, but it's definitely not a Light touch.  This is annoying especially if you have to scroll through log pages (web page or documents).  This is a real annoyance because it is so much more diffcult to use the TrackPoint, so much so, I'm debating whether to buy a mouse, which I haven't used in over 20 years. Anyway we could get UltraNav to add that functionality in soon???

Hello, I'm new here and I was hoping that someone could help me with my laptop.I have a IBM Lenovo T410, that was working very well with Windows 7 Professional, including the Touchpad and Trackpoint. Meanwhile, the hard drive got broke down and I decided to replace him with a SSD and upgraded SO to Windows 10, and then the problems became with Touchpad and Trackpoint. I already installed all the drives that I have found on Internet and on Lenovo forums and support pages but none works. Every time that I go to Control Panel > Mouse I get an error that tells me that there is a problem with Synaptics device, telling me to uninstall and reboot. Meanwhile, I installed windows 8.1 Pro, guessing that it could have some incompatibility with Windows 10, but the problem remains the same. Can anyone help me with this? How can I solve the problem? Where can I find the right drivers for my device?Thank you very much!

I have a two year old Thinkpad Yoga 370 running Windows 10  that I just love, but over the last year it's developed incurable trackpoint drift.  I've tried adjusting the sensitivity updating every driver I can think of, but still nothing.  I've just disabled it because its so maddening.  If I turn it on it will work for a few minutes, but then it will drift the cursor to the lower left corner of the screen and wobble back and forth in a small area.  Applying steady pressure 'up' and 'left' for a few seconds appears to re-calibrate it somewhat but within a minute or two it does the same thing.   Some questions: On this machine, what hardware driver controls the trackpoint & who is the manufacturer? Has anyone found a solution to this other than replacing the keyboard? (a frightful job) I've heard of other users who replaced the keyboard and the trackpoint drift came right back again.  Surely Lenovo must have some way for us to solve this issue.

I have a Thinkpad T440S and have a problem that many have reported. The trackpoint and touchpad initially work upon bootup but then stop working after a few minutes.I believe I've tried everything (uninstall/reinstall drivers, replace keyboard, replace hard drive and do a complete reinstall of all software, update everything, etc etc etc). Nothing works and the only reason I can still use my computer is that a wireless mouse will work. It's time to get a new computer. I've bought Thinkpads for more than a decade but I still see this problem being reported for the T470 so Lenovo can't or won't bother to fix this. Any suggestions for a different brand and model? I do like the trackpoint so does that mean Dell is my only alternative?

Both my mousepad and trackpoint have suddently stopped working. Keyboard works fine though. I have tried booting from a Debian live CD and the problem persists. I have checked that they are both enabled in BIOS. I have checked the keyboard connection and mousepad connection and both seem fine. I am not sure what the problem could be since if it was a hardware problem then surely the keyboard would also be having problems given that they share the same connection? Any ideas? I have been having problems for some weeks now but the mouse would usually start working again after reinstalling psmouse with modprobe, but that won't work anymore.

I have a Thinkpad T460s since a couple of months. It's the i7 edition with 20GB/1TB edition. The device has been working fine so far, although the CPU fan had to be replaced shortly after I got it (rattling noise). Since a couple of days, the Thinkpad is spinning up the fan very often. Just a simple interaction such as opening Chrome triggers the fan to blow quite loud for some time (20-30s at least). When compiling using Visual Studio, the fan almost spins to the loudest it possibly can. The thing is: it didn't do that all of the time I've had it.  Even when it's completely idle (say 0-2%), the fan still humms a little bit (it didn't do that before either). Could this indicate a hardware issue? I have NBD support but should know whether this could indicate some failure. Thanks for any advice.

Hi, I have a ThinkPad Yoga 12 2nd gen with these specs: -Processor: Intel core i5-5300U-Ram: 8GB-Hard Drive: Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SSD (installed by myself) and SanDisk 16GB PCIe M.2-Screen: Full HD 10 point multi-touch with Wacom digitizer-BIOS: JEET78WW (1.27) The trackpad and trackpoint on this laptop has stopped working the second time and with that, the CPU fan has halted as well, with the backlit function of the keyboard non-working as well. The fan is really important because my heavy-duty use of this machine makes it really hot real quick. My laptop is pretty much useless without it and want a solution for it. I did try to update my BIOS for this because on some forums, this was an issue fixed by updating their BIOS. The system does not recognize the Synaptics trackpad and trackpoint (yes the TRACKPOINT is not working as well) and I have tried downloading the drivers of the trackpad, but to no luck the system did not recognize the trackpad. It seems as if there is a faulty connection physically, but I could not figure it out. The first time it happened, I sent it back for an in Depot Service, but this time around, I am out of warranty and when I asked a ThinkPad Certified Technician, he recommended me to simply buy a new machine rather than getting it serviced because it would cost me more than half as much of the original price of my laptop. I really like this laptop and don't want to change it, but if I have to, the 8th generation Intel pro... The cursos most of the times will stop moving if I press again H.  I need to solve this: 1. I tried TouchFreeze but this deactivates only the touchpad when typing.  2. Is it possible to just deactivate the red trackpoint without deactivating the two physical buttons? I need these buttons. 3. Is there some other software solution? I would appreciate any help.

I have a recently purchased X1 Extreme, with fully updated system (according to Lenovo System Update) and running Windows 10 v. 1903.  Following some lost functionality / freeze-up of the mouse pointer, I first tried deleting the Synaptics Trackpoint in Device Manager, then rebooting. This "fix" worked, but the problem repeated itself.  So I followed the usual path - look for newer drivers in Lenovo Support.  So I looked at the X1E Drivers & Software page and downloaded the TrackPoint Firmware Update Utility from:https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n20g902w.exe Running this program gave me the following error (screenshot should (?) be attached):"Fail to enter Transparent mode" And now the TrackPoint & TrackPad do not work at all.  I am using an external USB mouse ... with my ultraportable laptop.   I searched and searched online, of course, and found a solution seems to have been found for the same problem on the X1 Carbon 6th Generation.  The solution involves downloading the SYNAPTICS Touchpad Firmware from the Lenovo site at:https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/THINKPAD-X-SERIES-LAPTOPS/THINKPAD-... But ... no such update for the X1 Extreme.   HELP...!!! A:How Can I Remove A Key From my lenovo Thinkpad t460s

You cannot do it reliably.  If you can get something flat under it, you can pop it off, but often one of the little plastic pieces breaks off so you cannot put it back.

I bought a new Thinkpad T460s laptop from Lenevo online store. I ordered a Intel i7-6600U CPU at 3.4GHz processor, but they sent me a 2.8GHz processor. When I asked them they replied it is 3.4GHz but not showing due to power saving. But I do not agree with their response. So Lenevo please provide me a valid answer. Thank you.

my t460s is on order. I'm looking to order 16GB upgrade module. it will be 16GB SO-DIMM DDR4 2133. they come with various CAS (latency) settings from CAS 13-15. what is the latency of the installed module?if you have access t460s , its easy to determine by running system or memory test utility such as CPU-Z.

Hi, Since this morning, my 3 week old ThinkPad T460s started making some weird fan noise. When spinning up and also while slowing down (so not on higher speeds), there's a rattling noise coming from the laptop. Sounds a bit as if the fan is brushing against something or perhaps some trembling/interference?Also at really slow fan activity, this is audible quite heavily. Up until now, that noise wasn't audible at all. Should I be calling in support (I have on-site support for this machine)? I don't assume this is normal for a new machine to happen? Thanks!

Hello, I do have a T460s with Windows 10. I deactived the internal battery, inserted the sim card and then nothing happened. I guess the SIM card is supposed to show up in the wireless network overview but it doesnt. Are there any drivers that I need to install? Hope somebody can help me. Kind regards,Chris

Hello,I bought the Card EM7345 for my lenovo t460s laptop. When I opened my laptop,it somehow seems incomaptible... the wires and the connection point at the card em7345 seems to be male. So I wonder if the card and the laptop could not be used together (it is not mentioned in the hardwarecompatibilty table)? [But other people here at forum report that could be used togetherhttps://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/4aawmj/t460s_wwan/ ?] Or another stuff necessary to connect to laptop and card? Thanks!
