Samsung Evo 840 Firmware update - Now windows won't boot.

Q: Samsung Evo 840 Firmware update - Now windows won't boot.

Hi. I ran the Samsung 840 EVO Firmware update that was provided because of the degrading problem said to be with the product.

It went all the way through and said complete. There were no problems or interruptions there. I closed the application and rebooted my machine.

The computer will get to the windows screen but right when it is supposed to go to the login it goes black and the monitors stop detecting a signal. It just sits at a black screen.

The scary thing is that when i try to run a recovery all executables associated with a given recovery error out. I.E. StartRep.exe fails to run. Trying to load previous working fails to run to. They get memory exception type errors!

I put in the windows 7 disc and have had it come up with "hit key to boot from cd or dvd". all repair attempts are the same as above. They fail the same way.

The only thing I have not figured out is how to get the machine to load into safe mode. i have been hitting F8 and doing what I can but I get no such options. My options are only the repair dialogs or boot normally. I do not understand why this machine has never given me a choice to boot to safe mode. How can I get that to work?

Please help! Is there anything I can do? I can't find any samsung forums or info.

Preferred Solution: Samsung Evo 840 Firmware update - Now windows won't boot.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

What degrading problem ? Samsungs are the best IMO, what did you think upgrading the firmware would help ? Or what did Samsung say it was for ?

How old is the drive, how often is it used ?

I turned on my computer and a message popped up to update my 3 month old Samsung firmware.
I used Magician 4.5, pushed the button, and it said "failed to update drive with new firmware".
Oh? When I rebooted later my OS would not boot. I went into the bios and it ID'd the drive as Samsung 3.
Now I can't boot the drive at all. I burned the ISO of the firmware update but it can NOT find the drive in DOS. If I boot with another drive and the ruined drive together, both Samsung 840 Pro and Samsung 850 Pro, it jams the boot until I remove the damaged drive. Anybody have any knowledge or any ideas?

Hi there,  I would really appreciate help in relation to this ongoing error. I am prompted by Vantage on regular basis to update the SSD firmware from 6L7Q to 7L7Q. Using Lenovo Storage firmware update tool 1.103. Fails every time, has been like this for months so I am not expecting an auto update fix.  Tries to do it, gets to reboot, and then the error below appears.  "software condition is not ready to update due to some condition" I have also downloaded from Lenovo website manually, and have run the zipped version, with same result. I have looked up Samsung SSD drivers directly and there is no options for this drive. Has anyone had similar issue? Please let me know if you have a fix.  Many thanks.

Can't seem to find an answer to my question - Does the firmware update mean I have to reinstall windows? I have done firmware updates on other devices in the past, but not on a "boot" device, so just need an answer.

Edit: According to samsung it does not wipe HD, but just wanted people who have done an "inplace upgrade" to answer.

Edit: It worked fine through magician.

Samsung has recently posted firmware update EXM03B6Q for the 850 Pro on the download site.
I was unable to update via Magician so downloaded the ISO and ran it from a USB drive.
I was one of the lucky ones who didn't update to EXM02B6Q in Feb of 2015 which was a total disaster.
The update worked without any problems and speeds have not changed at all.
There is also a PDF installation guide for those who like to read first.
Don't forget to image the SSD first just in case. I did not, however loose data but better safe than sorry.

friends I'm installing a fresh samsung 840 120gb. i thought i could put the ssd on sata 1 [not zero] and get firmware via magician on my windows 8 lab mule. no dice. apparently magician ONLY wants to see the ssd on sata zero. it can pull up the drive, but none of the controls work.
soooo... I'm thinking I'm going to have to go with the drive 'as is' to install 7 on a notebook, then as first order of business go pickup the firmware update and execute it.

will this result in sub-par arrangement? best I can tell the fw update is non-destructive.
is there another way?

A:samsung ssd: will firmware update harm anything? magician no use.

friends i have a new samsung 840 to replace a failing drive in a hp notebook.
i wanted to update the samsung firmware first, then do the install of windows 7 x64 but using the samsung so-called Magician, trying the drive on sata 1 [instead of 0] it still cannot properly register the drive. all I get is the SMART info - everything else is neutered. illogical... how does samsung want to update firmware? AFTER the os is installed?
a little guidance would sure be appreciated.

So I installed my new SSD, set up all my programs and files, and was having some trouble with discovering an ACHI drivers (which apparently cannot be achieved on my dell latitude model IDE ATA/ATAPI driver missing?)

Anyway after installing the Samsung Magician software to help optimize the SSD, it said that a firmware update was available, so upon updating I was rewarded with a BSOD after restarting. I became angry and did a system restore with my image disk and started over. This time in the samsung magician it said the firmware was already up to date so I didn;t think anything of it until today another BSOD. If I have to do another reinstall I will take my own life, so I hope someone can help me here.

Do you use the DW1520 Wireless-N WLAN Half-mini card?
If so then it looks like the driver for it is the problem.

Do you have a spare HDD that you can use because I think the driver for it is incompatible with SSDs. I will need to double check.

I am attempting to repair my friend's Samsung laptop running windows 8.1. I don't have the model name in front of me but I can post it when I get home if important. After a software update (as was told to me) and then subsequent reboot, the little cyclone spins around for a few seconds and then just a blank, white screen, no BSOD or something similar . I downloaded the manual which says in case of windows not starting to hit F4 upon start up. Hitting F4 does not cause any different change of events, just the spinning cyclone and then white screen. I can hit F2 to get into the BIOS but I don't see any settings in there such as "access recovery mode" or something similar that can help me. Unfortunately there is no cd/dvd media with the laptop.

Any suggestions? Are there any bootable troubleshooting programs I can download and burn to a CD that might help me? I was tempted to pay $120 for windows 10 and just see if it would boot off that and then load windows 10 but I'm afraid if it's not a software issue then I would be out $120.

I have already solved this issue myself, but perhaps I can help someone else with the same problem. After installing the latest firmware on my Ideapad 700, I was met with a list of bootable devices (HDD + network cards), none of which worked. To solve this, I put the Windows 10 installation on a USB flashdrive and booted from it, then navigated to the command prompt (Repair your computer -> Troubleshoot -> Advanced Options -> Command Prompt). From there, I entered the following commands:diskpart
sel disk 0
list volI noticed that the wrong drive (the FAT32 system partition) had the letter C assigned, so I selected that one and changed it to a free letter:sel vol 0
assign letter h:Then changed my Windows drive back to C:sel vol 1
assign letter c:
exitI then rebuilt the boot sector (using the FAT32 system partition), just to be safe:bootrec /fixboot
bcdboot C:\Windows /s h: /f
exitThen, I rebooted and it went back to Windows! Hope this helps someone.

This is a heads up message as I was able to recover my system by doing a grub2-install booting from a recovery USB. I must say I had used `fwupdmgr update` before to update my Thinkpad's firmware and it worked flawlessly. However, this last update left my boot pointing at the wiped out Windows boot in UEFI, which rendered my boot broken. If anyone from Lenovo is listening, please try to avoid breaking Linux user's systems . It is more disapointing when this happens using a Linux only toolchain (Btw, kudos for the support of lvfs!) This is my `fwupdmgr get-history` output in case it provides some useful info: 20LDCTO1WW System FirmwareDeviceId: d3db6c5633d83a940028fc88d8102d1f1563e3a4Guid: fc5552dc-7882-409b-9b98-699361c74fc4Plugin: uefiFlags: internal|updatable|require-ac|supported|needs-rebootChecksum: SHA1(804154ccc003a77e9b0d88fcb2d52cf12050e434)Version: 0.1.29Created: 2019-06-06UpdateState: success[Release]RemoteId: lvfsVersion: 0.1.34Checksum: SHA1(269cea4389dd420e58b88f182eabeaab23d74e85)Flags: noneBootMgrDesc: legacyCompileVersion(com.redhat.fwupdate): 12DistroVersion: 20190607CompileVersion(org.freedesktop.fwupd): 1.2.8SecureBoot: EnabledCompileVersion(com.redhat.efivar): 37UEFIUXCapsule: EnabledESPMountPoint: /boot/efiCompileVersion(org.freedesktop.gusb): 0.3.0RuntimeVersion(com.dell.libsmbios): 2.4DistroId: opensuse-tumbleweedCpuArchitecture: x86_64BootTime: 1559848020RuntimeVersion(org.freedesktop.appstream-glib): 0.7.14RuntimeVersion(com.redha... Hello, I have Carbon X1 5th (20HR) running Windows 10 pro (updated).  Altought I followed the instructions here - https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/cy/en/downloads/ds120390 (This is the page for Lenovo users who wish to update TPM firmware) - and installed the "BIOS Update Utility for Windows 10" version 1.33, Windows still keeps telling me to update the TPM firmware driver.  In BIOS it shows that I have TPM ver 2.0, enabled. Since Windows kept telling me to update the TPM driver, thanks to Google I found out that there is a tool created by Lenovo called "TPM Firmware Update Utility -ThinkPad" (It is worth noting that this tool is not mentioned on the instruction page). I downloaded the tool, but can't understnad how to use it (assuming that I should use it at all, because this tool is not mentioned on the TPM instructions page). Could you please help me to solve the TPM issue described above? Is there a way to check what version do I have? Thanks in advance!

I have the 128 GB Samsung MMCRE28G8MXP that came with my T410S.  CystalDiskInfo (and googling) tells me that TRIM has not been implemented on the drive's firmware.  I can see that CrystalDiskinfo correctly identifies TRIM on my Crucial and my intel SSD's. Is there any information out from Lenovo or Samsung that TRIM will be implemented on this drive?  Or maybe a tool to clean up the pages on disk?

A:TRIM firmware for the 128 GB Samsung SSD??

I'm in precisely the same boat with my X301, with the exact same drive. My machine was manufactured 2010/03/25. Googling around myself, I found the following facts:Samsung has released a firmware update giving TRIM support for their retail drives, but OEMs like Lenovo must issue their own. I don't know if anyone's tried applying the Samsung firmware to their Lenovo drive; there is a risk of turning the drive into a paperweight, if it's recognized at all. There is a rumor that Lenovo will release firmware giving TRIM support sometime soon. If a drive doesn't have TRIM support, to wipe it one must use the secure erase facility, which wipes the whole drive. On Linux, this can be done from a rescue CD withhdparm --security-erase [password] [device]Obviously this is rather inconvenient, as it requires a complete backup + restore. Samsung's firmware release was January, so you have to wonder what the holdup is for Lenovo ...

Windows Update pops up a UAC style notification every time I log in to my stand-alon Lenovo X230T laptop running Windows 8.1 Pro x64 saying that something "needs to restart to install a firmware update".  I am sure that the notification comes
from Windows Update:

If I kill the Windows Update process in Task Manager, the notifications go away.If I disable the Windows Update service in services.msc, the notifications never appear.
However, I have read that Windows Update can be compromised, and I have not found any confirmation that Windows Update makes unsolicited firmware updates on stand-alone computers.  Here are some screenshots of the notifications:

The first notification appears as soon as I log in. It stays in the foreground and blocks all action until I click "Close" or kill the Windows Update process in Task Manager.  Afterwards the notification is visible (in the task switcher) in
the background, but I cannot give it focus or bring it to the foreground.  It pops up again at the 5-minute mark, and again stays in the foreground and blocks everything until I click "Close" or kill the Windows Update process in Task Manager.
How can I be sure that this is legitimate?  If it is, why doesn't it show up in the Windows Update GUI? What firmware is being updated?

It probably can't read re-writable media so try using DVD-R or DVD+R

You can also update it directly via the internet by connecting it to your router and updating in real-time from the Samsung website. The BD-UP5000 has an ethernet port on it for this purpose.

Couple of things you can try.
- Move the DXM04B0Q folder to your desktop. Does the Samsung Magician see it?
- If still no joy, try letting the Magician download the firmware. Verify it downloaded the correct version.

Hello, I bought my P50 in October 2016. It has a SAMSUNG 961 OEM NVMe SSD (SAMSUNG MZVKW1T0HMLH-0000). The Firmware version is CXA7100Q (the drive shipped with this firmware). Since a few weeks I'm experiencing slow performance issues (Windows 10 Pro, 1803). Reinstalling didn't help. There have been some throttling issues as well which is a known bug of the firmware my drive has:https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/samsung-sm961-ssd,4608-5.html. This issue has been resolved in a later firmware version. There are newer firmware versions out (the latest at the time of this writing seems to be 7L6QCXA7) but the P50 NVMe Firmware update utility does not include this firmware for the 1 TB version of this drive (only for models up to 512 MB).   Is there any way to obtain the latest firmware for the 1TB version/are there any plans to include the 1 TB model firmware in one of the upcoming FWNVxx firmware update utility versions for the P50 model? Regards, Marcel

A:Samsung Kies error on firmware upgrading

You might try removing and reinstalling Kies. Also try the older version, sometimes newer is not better.
Perhaps there is a Samsung forum where this issue is addressed too.

I have a Thinkpad T520 (4239) that I just upgraded to Windows 8. I was not able to upgrade from a DVD; I had to use a USB flash drive to upgrade. I'm thinking maybe the problem was that the HLDS GT33N DVD drive did not have the latest firmware; it looks like its firmware version is LT20. On the Lenovo Drivers and Software page for the T520, there is a DVD Firmware Update Utility for Windows XP, Vista, 7 (fwsb10.zip). The README does not mention Windows 8. Can the utility be used on Windows 8? If not, when will a utility for Windows 8 be available? Thanks.

A:DVD Firmware Update Utility for Windows 8?

If you do try it I would run it in Windows 7 Compatibility mode. The chances are higher that it will work. I have the same 4239 but a different DVD drive, Sony model and never release new firmware for it. I don't see why that would prevent you from reading a DVD it burned or OEM pressed DVD.

I have a problem related to TPB firmware update in my Portege Z30-B-191 laptop.
Firsly I was noticed by the OS (Windows 10) about an update for the TPM firmware.
When I follow the steps I found this link in Toshiba site where I could find a downloable file and the instructions:
https://support.toshiba.com/sscontent?contentId=4015874
I downloaded the file but when I tried to follow the installation instructions (https://support.toshiba.com/support/...tentId=4015880) I found a problem: instructions are incomplete.
The point 8 of the section "Updating TPM via Windows 10" says: "Provide the Owner Password if requested. In case does not appears, skip to 14." but, there are only 9 points!!!

I haven't updated the firmware because the instructions are not clear and I'm afraid that the equipment could be damaged.

Could anyone help me?

The MP3 player contends that it's memory is full, yet it has nothing in its navigational tree. The mp3 device has corrupted before; however, last time it simply froze on one track rendering it impossible to change tracks without the device shutting down. In this instance there are no tracks to attempt to switch to, the only thing that works is the radio.

My solution was simple, reinstall the firmware implementing YP-MT6 updater--just like last time I had an issue. Sadly, the firmware install freezes well under half way through when it says "locking drive[ers?]" it was one of the two.

Anyway to beet this problem? 'Cause I'm at a loss. Not a happy costumer as far as this little samsung is concerned--i figured their phones were great so their other stuff should be too! Ha.

links to costumer service would be great.

I want to upgrade the firmware of my new Samsung DVD writer (from Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology) to the latest version.
DVD writer Model:
TSST corp CDDVDW SH-S223C
For some reason it will not burn DVD ?RW disks.

So I downloaded the latest appropriate firmware file from cdrinfo.com
Namely SH-S223C_SB04.exe which I ran under win7 (64) bit OS

This executable program in turn started up ?Tsdnwin.exe? installation program which then crashes (freezes) the system.
I had to use the Windows ?Task Manager? to End the Task.

Can this be a compatibility problem for win7 64 bit OS?
Or is my Win7 OS somehow corrupted?

Next I installed and tried ODD FW Liveupdate program and it too fails with an error message :

?that due to a system problem it failed to operate a program by
automatically connecting to it.?

Can anyone suggest what might be the problem here?

A:Failure of Firmware Upgrade of Samsung DVD Writer using Win 7 (64bit)

According to this page, you shouldn't need to worry about drivers or firmware. What I would suggest is completely uninstalling the driver from your Device Manager. Restart your computer. Windows 7 should pick up and install the burner fine.

Don't download driver and firmware files from anywhere but the manufacturers website, problems like this happen way more often when you do that

Is this going to start a boot loop like last time it happened?

A:Windows 10 Update downloaded X1E firmware 1.0.0.23 when 1.24 is already installed

@mircolino wrote:

If 1.24 is already installed, Windows Update will show that the 1.23 firmware (aka BIOS) was successfully installed. The real question is who thought that pushing Thinkpad BIOS updates through Windows Update services was a good idea? The recent track record on the P1/X1 Extreme BIOS updates of which several "bricked" the systems when applied does not lend itself to unattended installation.

Firstly your pc is setup as a legacy bios boot.

Secondly the disk are setup as dynamic which is not needed in mot cases.

How are you trying to update and what version of windows are you running now?

I'm running Linux on a Thinkpad T440p. To do Intel AMT firmware update to address Intel AMT vulnerability CVE-2017-5689 (or INTEL-SA-00075) https://support.lenovo.com/ch/en/product_security/len-14963 do I have to install Windows? The vulnerability is well described here: https://libreboot.org/faq.html#intelme I've already used the Linux tool Intel provided to "unprovision" AMT https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26799/INTEL-SA-00075-Linux-Detection-and-Mitigation-Tools but Intel says that merely mitigates this critical vulnerability. Does this Windows tool do more than merely mitigate? https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26755/INTEL-SA-00075-Detection-and-Mitigation-Tool I see a chipset firmware update: Intel Management Engine Firmware 9.1 for Windows 10 (64-bit), 8.1 (64-bit), 8 (64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad T440p, T540p, W540, W541 / version 9.1.41.3024 / date 2017/05/17 here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ch/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-... So does that mean I have to install Windows to run this critical firmware update? Thanks.

Quote:
Intel has temporarily pulled its just-released TRIM firmware update (02HA) and associated SSD Toolbox from their download site, following a number of reported problems with the new software. Details remain scarce at the moment, but according to several posts on Intel's support forums, users are left with a disk read error and no way to load Windows after rebooting from a seemingly successful firmware upgrade.

Windows 10 now wants to restart the laptop to finish the installation. So I restart the system. At the BIOS startup screen the system displays a red horizontal bar (under the red "Lenovo" logo) , makes a few loud beeps (presumably because firmware 1.21 is already installed) and then proceeds to start Windows which in turn wants me to restart again to complete the firmware installation. How do I get out of this ridiculous loop?

Ran the update, computer rebooted. none of the info displayed during the reboot/update process indicated there were any errors. When Windows started again, it ran FWLINBRDG automatically. This one shows the following error: I don't think I have the HDD password enabled. Where would I check for that? Or is this error unrelated to the HDD password (which I am not sure is set)?

I get this message:
"Windows could not start because of the following ARC firmware boot configuration problem:
did not properly generate ARC name for HAL and system paths. Please check the Windows documentation about ARC configuration options and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.

I have read through previous threads on this issue and it seems to be the BOOT.ini file needs replacing?
I am a beginner when it comes to these issues.
Can anyone offer hand holding?
I tried BOOTSUITE 2012 and it would not boot up.
I was able to to boot up the Ultimate WIndows Bootup Disk but NOW WHAT?
Any help is appreciated.

I run Ubuntu on my X1 tablet, and in general it's been great. (I completed removed Windows). However the digitizer pen jumps around in one particular part of my screen, and the touchscreen works only intermittently. I thought from another thread that this was perhaps a firmware issue, and decided it was a good idea to update my firmware anyway. So I made a USB stick with Windows PE on it (I also tried Windows Recovery), booted into it, and went to run the executables I downloaded here. But when I try to run them (from the Windows command line, which is my only option) I get, for example: This version of C:\Updates\n17wn01w.exe is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information and then contact the software publisher. Only one executable ran, and it was the TPM Firmware Update utility, in particular "TpmFlash64.exe". It told me there was nothing for it to update.I get the following from running ``ver``: Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17134.1] So I don't understand why the executables labeled Windows 10 on the Lenovo website won't run. My last idea was to build a x86 instead of amd64 Windows flash drive, in hopes that that would somehow fix things, but the X1 Tablet can't boot in Legacy mode, so I can't even get that to run. Any input would be greatly appreciated! I'm pretty disappointed that my touchscreen isn't working correctly. In any case it seems like a good idea to be able to update my firmware... Read more
