External Monitor not working properly

Q: External Monitor not working properly

I am running vista on my laptop which has an Nvidia GeForce 8700M GT video card. I have a dell external monitor which I know works because it works on my windows 7 netbook.. I plugged the monitor in and nothing. I have all the settings set up to run an extended desktop and made sure it was "connected". Windows is recognizing there is a monitor but it wont "turn it on".. I can draw other windows over in the direction of the monitor as if it were on but its just black... any ideas???

Preferred Solution: External Monitor not working properly

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Laptops usually have a key combination to enable the external monitor.
It's usually the Fn key and one of the Function keys. They usually have a picture of a monitor or two on them.

I have an Asus laptop (X83vb-x1 Core 2 Duo T5800 2.0ghz 4gb 250gb) with Vista Home Premium 64 and have purchased a 22" external monitor (AOC Envision L22W861) to facilitate movie watching, however, there's an issue. When I attempt to play DVD movies on my external monitor, the movie itself will show up very very light - almost white - on the external monitor, even though the rest of the screen shows up properly. If I play the movie on the laptop monitor, there is no issue. I use Windows Media Player, and have also tried VLC with no luck.

Does anyone know how I might fix this? Thank you!

So I have a laptop that died, and I took the hard drive out and put it in an enclosure. I plugged it into my other computer, and it worked. It worked wonderfully. Then I safely removed the drive, now it won't work again. It starts up, and in the Device Manager window under disk drives, it shows up there. But in My Computer, it's not there, and in the Disk Management window, it's not showing up. I really need to get some songs that I was working on off of this HD, and I can't afford to go somewhere to get my info recovered.

Can anyone help me? With a slow and concise explanation...because when it comes to the hardcore computer stuff, I'm definitely NOT a pro.

Hi folks,
I REALLY need some help as googling & trawing other forums has failed to find a solution.
Last night I was trying to install an external dvd-writer to my Dell Inspiron netbook. This device had TWO usb plugs, and neither of my usb ports are side by side. Although they recommended using an extender cord,of course none was included.I thought I'd get around the problem by using my ac-powered usb port.
After slowing my netbook to a crawl,(probably not helped by the attendant installation software Nero 9 freezing & failing to install) I gave up trying to install the software by nixing all the frozen programs with Task Manager & safely removed the dvd-drive from the hub & then unplugged the hub.
Now when I try to install any of my portable/external drives(Samsung s2 2.5" Portable 1 TB Drive,Western Digital 500g Portable Drive)directly into the netbook's usb ports, they won't work. They don't show in Device Manager or as a Lettered Drive.
They will show up in the Drive letter area a limited way if I connect them via the ac-powered hub(Autoplay searches for content,& kinda of gets stuck but you can see/access the files.)But they're still not giving me all the options they did before. The Drive letter doesn't have the picture icon it normally has, just a placeholder & the drive's letter & the device's name.
When each device is plugged in, the 'installing drivers' animation starts & when finished says something about 'Initio device installed' r... Read more

A:USB ports not working properly after using external USB hub

Are these external devices USB-powered or A/C Powered?
If they are USB powered it could be that the Power Supply of your netbook cannot handle the demand of electricity the devices need to function, they thing that draws me to this hypothesis of the issue being is that your netbook gets very slow when they are plugged in and little voltage can cause that.

I also had issues with my old PC using an external hub, the whole PC would freeze, so it may be a software conflict as well. Put I think it is mostly PSU based.

I've had a Maxtor 120GB drive for about 2 weeks now and it had been working fine. Just about an hour ago it no longer allows me to open the drive's directory. I'll open it, it'll sit for about 4 or 5 seconds and I'll the error message stating that Windows Explorer encountered an error and needs to close. This happens every time. I only have mp3's on the drive and I can open them through Winamp and such, but I can't go through the folders. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

So I purchased a little 150 GB external hard drive for my HP Stream 14 (Windows 10 64 bit) 34 GB HD and 4 GB RAM. I Here is my problem I've only had it about 3 weeks and its not working properly.

One day I plugged it in and my computer starts to lag pretty bad especially my File Explorer, but once I unplugged my hard drive everything went back to normal. So I started doing research to see what it could be. One site recommended running CMD chkdsk and that came back saying something about RAW file or something of that nature. So I researched that can came across file recovery programs like Minitool and EaseUS and those programs wouldn't even show the D: drive (external HD). My drive didn't show up in Disk Management either. It will show up in File explore but when I try to format it or click to access files it say "D:\ is not accessible; The parameter is incorrect". I'm at a lost. I don't know if the HD is just busted or if it can be fix. I'm not a computer expert (but I love learning about them) so some terminology might not register, but I'm willing to try. Any ideas?

Hi, I installed 2 hard drives using a caddy in my laptop, 1 SSD for the OS and 1 HDD for data. Every once in a while (once a year id say) I still need the DVD drive so I bought an external DVD enclosure (Generic). The problem right now is that windows doesn't recognize it or rather doesn't recognize it correctly.

On windows 7 pro x64.

here is a pic of the device manager

ok so windows recognizes it a a disk drive automatically (changed it manually to optical drive) and adds a portable device (? WPD FileSystem Volume Driver). The drive appears in My computer but empty.

What Iv tried:
- chose manually all available drivers from windows in update driver.
- disabled power management on usb
- other usb port/computer (on win7 32bits)
- using a power cable instead of the usb power cable
- google search for drivers using the device id ( USBSTOR\DISK&VEN_GENERIC&PROD_EXTERNAL&REV_1.12\303030303030303030303030&0)

anything else I can try? thanks.

This just started today. I had used my comp this morning and everything was fine. I came back home a couple hours later, and when I turn my computer on the monitor is not working. The screen is totally black. I checked all of the connections, restarted the computer a few times. With monitor plugged in and un plugged. Nothing worked. The strange thing is, if I turn the monitor off then back on it Does come on for a split second then black again. By turning it on and off over and over I was able to configure the settings so that I could use my TV as the display, but I have a regular tube type TV no highdef or anything so the resolution is very bad. I can barely read anything, The way the settings are on my computer I get updates from microsoft daily. I thought that may have been a problem so I used the System Restore to put it back to yesterday when everything worked fine. Does anyone have any idea about what could be wrong with my monitor and how I could fix it? One more thing, when I turned off a game that I was playing and the screen switched from the game to the desktop the monitor flashed on for a split second then to.

This is a recent problem. I have a Toshiba Canvio external drive, not SSD. It's got Bitlocker, so when I turn my PC on or awake from sleep, I have to enter a password to access the drive. Now, if I restart my PC, it works fine. Recently though, when I awaken from sleep, I'll click on the drive to enter the password, and Windows does this eternal loading thing. The address bar in Explorer has that green progress bar moving along, but it never finishes. If I unplug the drive and plug it back in, I can enter the password and access the drive, but after a while it'll start doing to eternal loading thing again. I doesn't seem like it would be the drive; the drive doesn't know whether the PC is freshly restarted or coming back from sleep.

Hello,

The deal is I have my monitor plugged into a video card and I am sure that the monitor is not dead because it recognizes the difference between when the computer is plug up and when it is now. I know the computer is loading up because the start up sound comes through the speakers. Also, something i've never experienced before, the monitor starts up and shows all of the different screens until it gets to the Windows XP screen. It appears to load and then it goes into sleep mode when it is supposed to go to the welcome screen. I believe it's a semi-homemade computer, but I am nt completely sure of it's orgins. It's Nvidia video card by the way (the non-video card port doesn't register the monitor at all).

If you need more info, i'd be happy to supply it.

Try booting the pc into safe mode.. (Tap the F8 key while it's booting). If it boots go to device manager and un-install the video card (display adapter) driver and then re-start again. Windows will re-install the driver. You may have to set the proper resolution again. Good Luck!

Hi,

I am writing this question for a friend who has a NEC computer. I am not there to see the exact problem.

This monitor is at his dad's house and he hasn't been there for several months. the last time he was there, the monitor worked fine, and nothing has changed.

He says there are lines all over and it's rolling too. He tried the video button and also demagnetized it. Nothing is working. (I'm sorry, i don't know what OS it has.) He thinks it doesn't have an os on it, so it may just have dos.

He tightened all the connections, and cards. Nothing electronic is nearby causing the problem.

Any idea why a monitor would go haywire, when nothing at all has changed?

Should he try to go into safe mode? And if so, how do we get into safe mode. I don't recall.

thanks for your help, yahoos.

I don't have recovery disk to try that. Is there any solution other then recovery/reinstalling system?

A:5510: Audio from websites not working when external monitor is also hooked up. (But Skype sound still working)

Hello. What might be happening is after you connect to the external display, the audio switches to HDMI audio. To get the audio to emit from the laptop's speakers again, go to the Windows Sounds dialog and make Speakers the default playback device (right click). You might have to do this every time you connect an HDMI cable.

Hi, first post!

I have an ASUS VW246H, 24 inch external monitor connected to my two laptops, one via HDMI, and another via DVI (viewing one at a time ofcourse).
My new laptop (Dell xps 17) has had the dual display running smoothly until right now (it was running just few hours ago!) and now it doesn't work!!
I plug in the HDMI cable, the monitor detects that something is plugged in, turns black for a sec, and then just displays "HDMI No Signal".

p.s. in the past hour I did boot into my second partition (Ubuntu, Linux) which doesn't have a dual monitor setup but I by accident left the HDMI plugged in. I 'think' I have done that several times before without anything going wrong. Dont know what happened this time!

p.s.s. I have tried to go in monitor settings on windows 7, look at the NVIDIA control panel and it cant find any external monitors. I have also tried toggling Fn + F1 which is the external display switch.

Click "Display Options." Select "Identify Monitors" to locate the external monitor. Click the drop-down menu and choose the external monitor to switch the display.

I have a Lenovo G50 running Win8 32bit. I have two external monitors both Asus with VGA ports. I successfully configured one of the monitors to the VGA port. However I have not been able to successfully get my 2nd external monitor connected using the HDMI port. I have a VGA to HDMI adapter for the monitor but it's not working. To rule out any issue with the 2nd monitor, I was able to get it to work by disconnecting the VGA cable from the first monitor and connecting it to the 2nd monitor. But again, no luck using the HDMI port with a VGA to HDMI adapter. So I'm fresh out of ideas. Had anyone been able to resolve this successfully with this setup? And if so, how? This the latest driver is as posted at the HP website and tends to the be the version that is also automatically installed via windows update.  I notice that actual baseline release date of 10.18.15.4248 is August last year. Intel have many later non-OEM versions but this is the latest HP OEM version. I am at a loss on how to fix the problem and have had to resort to a plugabble USB3 to HDMI adapter to provide external monitor support.

Ever since updating to Windows 10, my Yoga 2 Pro (model name 20266, Mfg Date 14/08/2014) is unable to connect to an external monitor. Tried a few TVs and a projector using the micro HDMI port. I've connected other computers to each of the monitors so I know they work. I understand how to use WIndows intimately (35 year old software engineer at Google, been using WIndows 20+ years), trust me, this is not a case of me forgetting to use Windows key + P or anything like that. The mirco HDMI port itself (physically) is fine and was working great until the day I downloaded Windows 10. So unless it happened to spontaneously stop working on the exact same day i upgraded to WIndows 10, it's not a hardware issue either. The issue is that the external monitor is simply not detected, no matter my attempts to play with the display options.I have also run the Intel driver update utilty, but it refuses to update the driver because it says it's detected manufacturer drivers and tells me I should get the manufacturer drivers. Ok, so I went to the Lenovo Yoga 2 support website, the latest driver they offer on that site is 10.18.15.4240. The driver update doesn'tmake a difference. Now, if you go to Device Manager > Display Adapters > Intel(R) HD Graphics Family, right click and selected "Update driver software..." it will download an even newer version (10.18.15.4279). I have a Windows 10 laptop and an external monitor. The monitor was working perfectly for a few weeks, until one day I switched on the laptop to find that the monitor was no longer working. Going to 'Display Settings' only showed one monitor, and pressing 'Detect' said 'Didn't detect another display'.

After updating all drivers, then purchasing new leads and adapters for the monitor, I still couldn't get it to work. Then I stumbled upon the 'Hardware and devices' troubleshooter which, after restarting my computer, made it work.

Less than a week later, I just restarted my machine and suddenly it's not working again. This time, the troubleshooter isn't fixing it. Every time, it just says to restart my computer to finish applying updates/drivers but restarting doesn't help.

Anyone have ideas how I can fix this?

I've been running this Z580 for a year or so, and updated to Windows 10 a couple of months ago. Both the laptop display and an external monitor (HPw1907 vga) have been working fine. The other day, the external monitor just stopped working.   I check the device manager and the Intel HD Graphics 4000 display adapter is disabled, due to a Code 43. I have tried rolling back to an earlier restore point, I've uninstalled and reinstalled several versions of the Intel graphics adapter, up through the current compatible one. The most recent display adapter driver from Intel is apparently not hardware compatible with this adapter. The funny thing, is that the driver wants to work! On booting, while the black and white Lenovo splash screen is displayed, with the little circular Windows logo circling around, I can move the cursor back and forth between monitors. As soon as the screen turns blue (I assume with Windows drivers loading) the external monitor blanks out and I'm back to one screen.  Based on that behavior, I'm wondering if it's not a display driver that is specfically the problem, since I've loaded up the latest drivers several times, but if maybe a recent Windows update has sneaked in a driver or component for something else that is causing the Intel driver to crash. Any thoughts?  Back in earlier versions of Windows, you could have the system load one component at a time during boot, so you could check for incompatibilities. So, if the... Read more

Hello, I recently bought the Ultra Dock 90 for my T450s.  I have one external monitor currently connected through the dock.  When I push the power button on the docking station (laptop lid closed) to turn on the computer, the computer turns on, but the external monitor does not engage.  When I lift the laptop lid, there is no image on the laptop screen either.  The laptop is on, but does not respond to any key stokes on the actual laptop.  I then have to do a hard reboot using the power button on the laptop. If I initially power the laptop by lifting the lid and hitting the laptop power button, the compter boots and my external screen works.  I can then close the laptop lid and everything is fine. I know the power button on the dock should power the computer and external monitor on.  I am guessing there is a simple solution to resolve this, but I am not a computer person and need help. One thing to note - when I lift the lid after trying to power the laptop through the dock, I see that the Function Green Light is illuminated.  Not sure if this information is helpful in determining the problem. Please help! Peterrabbit33

Hi, I have a np9770 sager laptop and about a day ago the brightness settings no longer work and external monitors I plug in no longer work either. My version of 8.1 is fully updated with windows update. Nothing as far as I know changed but here is what I have tried to fix it:

1. Running driver sweeper in safe mode and reinstalling most recent drivers from nvidia.com
a. Running driver sweeper again in safe mode and installing drivers from the sagernotebook.com website
2. Uninstalling and scanning for hardware changes fo generic monitor in device manager
3. Running sfc /scannow in command prompt, nothing wrong
4. Updating chipset drivers from both the intel.com website and sagernotebook.com website
5. Rolling back windows to a restore point on the 12th of September, about 5 days ago
6. Creating another user account
7. Verified adaptive brightness is off in advanced power settings.

Odd things I found:
1. In device manager the gtx 980m display adapter has a warning triangle on it and this message when I double click on it:
"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
This has been constant throughout the whole ordeal
2. Whenever connecting a monitor as soon as I plug it in the monitor lights up as if it were going to work and just says hdmi not connected then goes to sleep. Nothing is detected in device manager.

Hi, My p50 display just stopped working out of the blue yesterday. When i connect an external monitor or HDMI (TV)  the screen pops on the tv or external monitor. Everything works fine. It's just that the screen on the p50 is just blank. To make it more complex, the touch is working fine. Just to be precise. The black screen is also during post and boot of windows so i don't believe it's a driver issue. The only thing i can think is that the display is broke but don't understand why touch works. Is there a way to reset perhaps bios to default or does anyone have a good idea before i raise a RMA?. The p50 is working still fine but just the screen. Thanks  Ivan

I have a lenovo b570e laptop and am running Windows 8.1.

I recently bought a new monitor (ASUS ve248h) to use as a dual monitor along side my own laptop however upon connecting the HDMI cable with the monitor it doesn't appear to work. I have tried updating the drivers and the hdmi port does work while I am connecting to my LG tv using the hdmi port. I have used various cables including the one that connects it to the tv however so far without success.

I am a bit clueless as to why it would work with the tv and not the monitor also my brothers laptop (which has Ubuntu) does successfully connect to the monitor.

Any help would be much appreciated and Thanks in Advanced

I'm running Windows Vista and I am trying to run a seagate external harddrive. The device manager says its working properly, the drivers are up to date, etc. but when I go into my computer it is not showing up. The harddrive is unformatted- I use it on both Macs and PCs.

A:External Harddrive "Working Properly" but not in browser

If the hard drive is unformatted, then it wouldn't show up in my computer. You need to format the hard drive. Right click my computer and go to manage. In the Management console go to disk management and format your hard drive. If you say you use it on both macs and pcs, then it is formatted and you can try to assign it a drive letter. If it's formatted for Mac, you'll need to install MacDrive or something similar to access the files.

I unplugged the cable to move my ultrabook, plugged it back in and now the connection with the external monitor is completely dead and won't come back, any chance its something other than the USB C port being broken? It worked fine for 48 hours.

Dear all,
Wonder if you can help me solve a problem. I have just received an XPS13-9350 from the Outlet last week. It was certified refurbished.
I've tried to connect a VGA monitor to it via a USB-C to HDMI, then HDMI to VGA cable. The HDMI to VGA cable works perfectly on my Inspiron 15. The setup also works if I full power down the XPS13, attach USB-C to HDMI to VGA to monitor, and then boot up. The external monitor then works almost perfectly (with the exception of Netflix's video player which makes it flicker blue - Youtube and local video are completely fine).
What I cannot do is plug in this monitor whilst the XPS13 is on already - which is inconvenient as I move on and off desk a lot, and powering down the computer every time is unhelpful. Oddly, the monitor will also not be recognised if I simply Restart from Windows. I have to fully power down and plug everything in before switching the computer on again.
I have updated BIOS, video card and Thunderbolt drivers since and none of these has solved the problem. My system info is:
DELL XPS13-9350
Windows 10
Core i7-6560U, Intel Iris 540 graphics
8GB RAM, 256GB SSD.

I upgraded to Windows 10 last week and everything was smooth.  Today when rebooting my system, the unit no longer can see my external display.  I have tried multiple other displays and none seem to work.  I have the latest video drivers for Win10 from the support site installed but it still doesn't work.  Any thoughts?

A:Yoga 2 Pro + Windows 10 = External Monitor not working via micro HDMI

I experienced the same - and also inconsistently that the system is going sluggish/lagging heavily. To fix problem with HDMI downgrade to drivers for Win8.1 - it works but hopefully Lenovo will fix this issue with Win10 drivers!? Overall upgrading to Win10 has been a bad experience (regarding the lagging of the system which usually occurs after 20-30 min after logging on). I've tried removing all third-party startup programs (including Lenovos) - but to no help. The frustration is increasing - any tips will be appreciated :-)

Hello I have been fighting issues with my external monitor not turning back on after sleep. I have it set to hybrid mode, I understand the other fix is to set it to discrete mode but my other laptop of the same type does wake up after moving the mouse in hybrid mode. I tried multiple things. 1.) Updated Intel Management Drivers and Software 2.) Updated Thunderbolt Software 3.) Used Graphic Driver Uninstaller and to no avail.  I also installed every update for Windows 10 on their web site. The other fix is to enable and disable the NVIDIA driver in the and that wakes up the HDMI port it seems, but that should not be the case, I would like it to just turn on with the flick of the mouse or button like my other laptop. Is it a failing graphic card of Nvidia or Intels end? I do notice after the monitor sleeps the NVIDIA drivers control panel settings go missing. I already uninstalled completely and reinstalled the drivers but my computer is still having this problem. Are their any suggestions on Lenovo's end or fixes? I bought this laptop from Amazon and I also joined a 3 year support service from them.

A:Lenovo P50 - HDMI External Monitor Not Working After Sleep (My Other Laptop of the Same Kind does)

Have you compared the Power Option settings on the two laptops to see if they match as well?Do the two systems share the same monitor, and if not, how is your monitor configured, does it have an option to set the input source to HDMI vs. automatically detecting the source? When in the mode where the screen does not turn back on, what happens if you press the following key combination Windows Key + Shift + Ctrl + B  (forces a reset of graphics cards) do you hear a beep and your screen wake up?     That key combination sometimes works to wake the monitors, and while not a solution, it may be a work around until you find a permanent one. Best of luck,

I have bought a Pro Dock (4X10H04503) as 'final solution' to simple remove the tablet for travel and plug it back for stationary use. This kind of works. But when cold booting the system (BIOS is set to boot when power is turned on), the monitor on the HDMI output never shows, isn't even detected by anything. So it doesn't show up on the Intel Graphics Properties for the HD 5300 neither. In order to make it work like in my current situation (T410s, docked, power-on boots, and switches to external monitor without any user interaction), I need to either unplug the power of the dock after login, or remove the tablet from the dock and put it back. Only then does the second monitor show as alternative, resepctively is switched to.  Any help by someone who has an idea how to avoid the power_on - login - remove_tablet - insert_tablet cycle will be appreciated! Uwe
