Cannot disable Windows Features with AutoUnattend.xml

Q: Cannot disable Windows Features with AutoUnattend.xml

I created an answer file in Windows SIM.
When I install system disabled features are still there.

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<!--Windows 7 HOMEPREMIUM Audit Mode-->
<unattend xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:unattend">
<servicing>
<package action="configure">

<selection name="TelnetClient" state="true" />
<selection name="WindowsGadgetPlatform" state="false" />
<selection name="Xps-Foundation-Xps-Viewer" state="false" />

Did anyone try to change <package action> value?
I don't know... setting remove or stage instead of configure...??

Preferred Solution: Cannot disable Windows Features with AutoUnattend.xml

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Howdy Folks!

I have just recently installed the "stand alone" version of Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 and I have a simple question regarding that. Can I safely turn off the .NET Framework 3.5 in "Turn on/off Windows features?" To navigate to the Windows Features" service simply go here: Start > Control Panel > Turn Windows features on or off [link at far left of page]. Thank you for any input you may have.

A:Windows Features: disable .NET Framework 3.5

Welcome to Seven Forums Torah.

According to Microsoft's "Additional Information" contained in the below link, .NET Framework 4.5 runs side-by-side with the .NET Framework 3.5 and earlier versions, but performs an in-place update for the .NET Framework 4. So from this I would say do not turn off 3.5 or things may not run correctly. The current .NET Framework version (from what I understand) builds upon each previous version. מזל טוב

Hi.

I have a Windows 7 embedded that I want to modify this way for all users (or, even better, for non-administration accounts):
 - It must not be possible to open folders.
 - It must not be possible to erase files from desktop.
 - Disable Start menu
 - Disable Windows key.
 - Lock task manager.
I am aware that this configuration can be made from the registry, but I have not been able to find the registrys where this can be made.

Thanks a lot!

So I've been asked to research Win7 images and the best way to create and deploy them. We don't have MDT 2010 up yet, so I'm stuck using a custom install.wim along w/ the unattend.xml file.

Question #1

How can you stop Win7 OOBE welcome screen from making you create a local user account? After Win7 finishes its text based setup, I want it to boot into Windows as Admin bypassing the welcome screen (create user/change PC name). This way desktop support can -

1. Change the PC name
2. Join the domain, reboot, and be done
3. End user logs in, process complete

There is no need for them to do a Audit mode w/ reboot. The domain accounts already exist. I don't want local users being created.

In Win XP you could edit the sysprep.inf so that you had -

[GuiUnattended]
AutoLogon=Yes
AutoLogonCount=1

Which would allow you to log in as admin the first time after sysprep, join the domain, etc. How do you do this w/ Win7? I can only get it to log in as admin in systemAudit mode, I want to do it in OOBE.

Hopefully I just missed something. Like I said, I'm new to automating Win7 setup.

A:Windows 7 AutoUnattend.xml - User & PC Name

I was able to successfully solve this exact problem by looking at this website:

Sysprep a Windows 7 Machine

With the unattend.xml file that I have, it prompts for a PC name first thing, then creates the local administrator account and automatically logs in one time, joins to the domain via my JOINDOMAIN.VBS script, installs our AntiVirus program, installs out network management agent, and activates windows automatically with KMS. Then it ends by initiating a system reboot with a 10 minute timeout clock. That way if an admin has to leave the machine during the imaging process, it won't stay logged in to the local admin account. So what you are asking about is definitely possible. Just make sure your unattend.xml file is built correctly.

2 possiblities, i've seen both of these work

first
Go to Control Panel, then Hardware and Sounds.Select Pen and Touch and go to the Touch tab.
At the top is "Use your finger as an input device." Uncheck it.
Click Apply and then OK.

Second,
Press the Windows logo key + X.
Select Device Manager from the list.
Click the little arrow next to Human Interface Devices to expand the list.
Click the touch screen driver (in my case, NextWindow Voltron Touch Screen).
Right-click, and select Disable from the list.
Click Yes on the dialog box that asks if you are sure you want to disable the touch screen driver.
Give them both a try

I hear Firewalls carry some features that Anti-virus programs already cover. Comodo for instance, you would disable features your antivirus program already does.

Are these Firewall features any different than the antivirus version?
- Web Shield
- Program Guard

My anti-virus (Avast) has a File System, Mail, Web, P2P, IM, Network, Script and Behavior Shields.

A:Firewall features to disable when running Antivirus?

Firewalls are completely different from AV and you need both. But some firewall programs come with built in anti-malware software that you don't need if you have it elsewhere. Usually, by choosing a custom installation, you can leave it out. But you need all the firewall features since they are different.

I have recently bought a new Lenovo Z500 laptop with Windows 8.

The touchpad is large which I like but it has a whole host of annoying features swipes and swopes and sweeps and whatever. When I place two of my fingers on the touchpad and move them, sometimes the feature I am using zooms in or out. When I swoop my finger from the far edge of the touchpad towards the middle it causes new Windows 8 display screens to appear at the screen edges etc.

How do I disable all these annoying new features while keeping the basic functionality of the touchpad? Any suggestions would be helpful.

I am missing a feature on this ThinkPad Yoga 260 that is found in all other ThinkPad's that I have used in recent history...disabling touchpad input when a USB mouse is present. It drives me nuts. Doing a little Registry digging (Windows 10), there is a DWORD value in HKEY_CurrentUser/Software/Elantech/OtherSetting/DisableWhenDetectUSBMouse, but it doesn't work, and the touchpad/stick is permanently disabled, presumably because there is also pen input on this model?  Is there a way to ask Lenovo for this feature to be worked on in the next driver version of the ELAN Touchpad? I know Synaptics usually had it, but this has an ELAN-manufactured touchpad.

I am having an issue where the windows features under Internet Information Services/World Wide Web Services/Application Development Features will not install.  Specifically those which are clicked on when one clicks on ASP.NET.  All necessary versions
of ASP.NET are installed.  IIS 7 is installed.
In the Event Log there are two errors which are shown in conjunction with this problem.
1. Unable to install counter strings because the SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ASP.NET_64\Performance key could not be opened or accessed. The first DWORD in the Data section contains the Win32 error code.
The error code is: 020000000E0E0000
2. Installing the performance counter strings for service ASP.NET_64 (ASP.NET_64) failed. The first DWORD in the Data section contains the error code.
The error code is: 02000000C9120000
I am thinking that the performace key is somehow not accessable due to some security feature.

I appreciate the replies, but it has nothing to do with running as administrator.

Hey,
I have created a autounattend.xml file using the Windows System Image Manager. When validating, everything comes back clean. However, when deploying it ends up failing with the message in the second set
I am deploying using this method to an Intel Compute Stick:
Use Rufus to "install" Windows iso to a Bootable USB drive.Drop autounattend.xml into the root of the USB driveBoot USB device, let the software do it's thing.
What actually happens:
Use Rufus to "install" Windows iso to a Bootable USB drive.Drop autounattend.xml into the root of the USB driveAfter a few minutes, Windows Setup complains: "Windows could not collect information for [OSImage] since the specified image file [D:\Sources\] does not exist

A few things about this:
I never specify D:\Sources anywhere in my autounattend.xmlAuto

I was not planning on doing this with Sysprep, I was planning on dropping the autounattend.xml file directly on to the root of the USB drive and let it install the image automatically rather than booting through WDS or something similar.

I have been reading Windows 10 Image - Customize in Audit Mode with Sysprep - Windows 10 Forums in case sysprep is the absolutely best way though.

I went to the windows download section in the website and downloaded the Media features Pack!

The problem is, after I installed it I went to "turn windows features off and on" to check it and play music in my wmp
and it was not there! There is no "Media Features" option like it is supposed to have. I tryed:

Reinstalling, did not work because windows said it was there already
Rebooting, nothing changed,
Running wmp Fix,
Ran SFc /scannow, nothing was found

I would really appreciate if someone really good came and said that I missed something really simple.

Hi, all just want some help on why the Autounattend.xml file that I have attached is not working.
It is designed to simply generate a random computer name and join the computer to the relevant 2008-R2 active directory domain specified during the OOBE setup process.
I have placed it in the root of OS drive (Aka C:\) and specified it as follows:

sysprep.exe /oobe /shutdown /quiet /unattend:C:\Autounattend.xml
When I start the computer back up, it is neither on the domain nor is the computer name changed and randomnized. The domain user account specified in the Autounattend.xml has permissions to create and delete computer objects.
What is wrong with what I am doing?

I'm about to prepare some OEM computers and have made a simple unattend.xml-file with help from the answering file sample from WAIK, but I can't get it to work properly.

I have copied the file to the root directory of an USB drive and it seemes like the installation program is reading the file (e.g. I don't have to specify an computer name when finalizing the installation) but it's not as automated that I would like it to be. I have to choose wich Windows version to install (basic, HP etc.), the disk partitions listed in the xml-file is not automated (I have to choose wich drive to use for installation), I need to confirm the license agreement, choose date and time options.

What can be wrong? I would like a clean, working autounattend.xml-file that automatically installs and also temporarily activates the administrator account so I can install updates, drivers and such and then seal everything up with sysprep.

Can anyone help me with this?
Here's my autounattend.xml file (I've deleted the OEM info):

Hi,
I've been trying to create my own Autounattend.xml file so that my Win 7 installations goes 100% automatic.
However after couple of days without success I would like to ask for some help.
The autounattend does work as far as to the DiskConfiguration where it fails, it doesn't wipe the disk nor create the partitions that I ask it to do. I've been searching on the forum and I see that there's a lot of people having the same issue however I
can't get mine to work..
If it matters or not, anyway when I come to the disk configuration screen I try to press Next and it just says "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate and existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information."
Can anyone out there go through my code to see if there is anything that has to be added/removed/changed?
I appreciate it, thanks!

I have created an automatted installation for Windows 7 via AIK and I am setting the UserLocale, UILangauge and Inputlocale for specific regions. I then saw this aritcle furthest below (see: "Apply regional and language settings to reserved accounts") and was
wondering if there are other autounattend.xml paramters that also need to be set to ensure these "reservered accounts" are set for the proper regions.
Please note: I want to keep the base language for Windows and the SQL Collation set to en-US, just the default users regional settings (UserLocale?), UI (UILanguage?) and keyboard (InputLocale?) settings need to be country specific.
In my Autounatted.xml file I have all the Locale settings set for en-US in the 1 windowsPE section. I believe these only apply for the actual installation process and not the final Windows deployed image. Is that correct?
I believe I need to set the locale setting in either the 4 specialized or 7 oodesystem pass to affect the installed system.
So to achieve, my desired resule, OS & SQL using a base en_US language and the default User, UI, and keyboard langauge being country specific, I would set the Microsoft-Windows-Internationas-Core_neutral settings as follows:
InputLocale to the specific country such as da-DK (Denmark)
SystemLocale is set to en_US
UILangauge is set to da-DK
Userlocale woud also be set to da_DK
Can anyone confirm how these locale setting work and if I am interpreting/setting them corre... Read more

A user could just use any spreadsheet application or online calculator so I don't get why you think that this will work.

Yes it can be done either via Group Policy or via a registry edit.

I see where one of the performance enhancements recommended is to disable unneeded "Features" in the Program & Features section of Control Panel. The impact of disabling some of the features is obvious, but in some cases it's not so obvious whether I need to leave a feature installed or not based on how I use my system and the applications that I have installed (for example, Microsoft.NET Framework, Remote Differential Compression, etc.). I have tried searching for a description of each "Feature" and how to determine whether it might be needed or not, but have been unable to locate a good discussion or description of each "Feature". Can anyone direct me to a source of this info. Thanks.

I have a HP Pavilion dv7, I want to disable the touchpad. I am running Windows 10 64 bit. The options to disable does not exist through any of the mentioned methods in the forums I have researched. It does not show up in the mouse enable or disable as described.This touchpad is very annoying to say the least. I am very close to taking the laptop apart and pulling the ribbon connector off to permanently disable it.Hoping someone has the answer to shutting it off?Thank you for the assistance.

Hi

this is not another windows is stealing mac idea's debate thread.

I'm just if I can find a widget that lets me do this.
Windows 7 has this really cool widgets section where I can place things like sticky notes, calendar, weathers etc on my desktop.
Mac's widget feature though can be activated or hidden with the mouse wheel click.
I find this small feature to hide and show your widgets with a click of a mouse very convenient and user friendly.

I'm wondering if windows 7 has this feature in their settings (perhaps I missed out) or perhaps they didn't thought of this?
if so can I be directed to the setting that allow me to hide and show my desktop widgets.
If windows doesn't' have it, can I tweak it or a software that allow me to do this?

here's an example of what I am talking about.

thanks.
updates.

I know when you right click on the desktop, you could select the settings to hide gadgets. which of course works well enough, although less appealing than one simple click or "ctrl + wheel Click" it's these little things that makes using a computer feel great easy and nice.

I've found a software that somewhat does this for me. btw. although I have not tried it.
any other suggestions are welcomed. perhaps Microsoft would add this i... Read more

I mean, I love it.. IT's the fastest OS I have ever worked on with a Windows platform. But, I really don't see anything that I would use on an everyday basis.

All I see, is Homegroups, an improved taskbar and extreme increase in speed. What am I missing?

A:Is it me, or does Windows 7 not have many new features?

Wouldn't you use 'an improved taskbar and extreme increase in speed' everyday? Some/most of the improvements are 'under the hood' so to speak. That's why it's faster. How about Aero snap or Libraries? I love those features. I also find that hardware that I had to fiddle with to get working now self installs. Yipee.

In the "Windows Features" window where you can Turn Windows features on or off, is there a list or table describing what each feature is? I would like to get a detail description of what I get from turning them off and on. I know what some of them do but not all.
