Power Problem - T440s

Q: Power Problem - T440s

This is probably a simple problem, but I can't figure it out. Device: T440s running Windows 10 Pro Problem(s): If I unplug it from the power adapter, re-plugging it has the following effects--it does not recognize that it is plugged in, and the red light over the 'i' on the lid repeatedly flashes a fast sequence of four short flashes followed by a brief pause. It does this until the battery drains and then it shuts down. Adding some further confusion: It will not shut down or restart when plugged in. It will sit on the blue, "Shutting Down" or "Restarting Windows" page for as long as I leave it. I have to force it to shut down by holding down the power button until it turns off. And yet further confusion: If, while it is turned off, I disconnect the external battery and plug in the adapter, I get the standard three flashes to indicate that it's charging. I can then reconnect the external battery, and it charges like normal though the light gives me an occasional double-flash as it charges and the charger gets hotter than normal. So, I'm not sure if this is a bad adapter, battery, motherboard, or something else entirely. I'd like to fix it before my Macbook wielding colleagues catch on and give me grief. Any help is much appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First off, I am an Electronics Technician by trade.  I have 25 years of experience with all kinds of electronics.  This one has me scratching my head.  This all  started because I had an issue with my touchpad so I changed it out.  During the process I removed all power including, power cord, external battery and internal battery.  Replaced the mouse pad and put everything back together.  When I went to power it up I got no response.  Here are the things I have tried. 1. Hold the power button for a minute.  Tap it 10 times then hold anothe minute.2. Remove all batteries and press the power button for 1 minute.3. Remove all batteries and the RAM module and press the power button.4. Press the reset button through the cover on the back of the machine.   5. Lastly I disconnected the CMOS batter along with all other power.  The last step actually let me me boot up my machine and everything was working like normal.  I was happy I had fixed the problem, but I didn't.  Once I shut down the machine it still will not power back up.  I have to disconnect the CMOS battery again in order for me to powe up the machine.  Once the machine comes back I updated the BIOS to the latest version and that didn't help either.  I am stumped!  Any advice that anyone can give me is greatly appreciated.

A:Thinkpad T440s won't power up

It sounds like the power button.  Make sure the little cable is inserted all the way and is straight.  Also, the little board with the actual button might not be mounted correctly.

Hoping someone can help me out.  I was just using my T440s when the screen suddently went gray, except for a single line down the side. There was also a constant beep coming from the speakers.  After powering it off, it won't boot. With the charger connected and both batteries connected, upon powering the unit up,  the power LED blinks (1 second on and 1 second off) the fan turns on and off (1 second on and 1 second off) and the keyboard backlight does the same.  I've tried doing the emergency reset, unplugging the internal battery, holding the power button to force a discharge, removing/reseating the memory and hard disk, and so on.  At one point, with just the external battery and charger conencted, the unit had constant fan, no keyboard backlight and a blinking power LED (2 fast blinks followed by 1 slow blink).  At this point, I think it's a bad system board, but I'm hope not.  Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

My T440s lately switches totally off when removing power cord. Batteries are reported healthy by OS and in fact the machine works fine from battery. When power is plugged in red led blinks three times and machine works fine unless I pull out plugin cord, when it switches off. It is neither sleep mode nor hibernation, the machine loses power totally. Strangely, it starts perfectly again from battery or with power connected. Just when power is removed it collapses. Any idea?

A:[SOLVED] T440s total switch off when removing power

This is an internal battery issue. Even though OS showed both batteries working, in fact the internal one remained off-line after last service. For servicing internal battery is normally turned off in BIOS and after first power plugin internal battery should automatically be turned on again. Somehow internal battery remained off even after plugging in the power cord after last service. When I was working with the power cord plugged in of course I did not notice that the internal battery was not working (it showed OK in OS). When disconnecting the power cord the system should use internal battery first, check for external battery existence and use up external battery first if present. This is good. In my case when I disrupted external power supply there was no power from internal battery so the system died. I realized that the internal battery was off when the external battery went down and the system switched off instead of using the internal battery. I disconnected CMOS battery, waited abt 10 seconds, plugged in CMOS battery and fixed lost settings in BIOS. After restarting internal battery turned on and everything works as usual again. Strange that OS (elementary os) showed internal battery working fine even though it was off.

Hey all, Recently I've been having problems with my T440s ThinkPad not turning on. The first time this happened, I took out the internal battery and it worked! But then it randomly shut off while using it again and it hasn't turned on since. I purchased a new internal battery in hopes of that being the issue and it just arrived today but I still get nothing when trying to power on. I'll run through what I have tried unplugging and plugging back in the internal batteryholding the power button for 60 seconds to discharge itpressing the emergency reset buttonremoving the RAM and placing the RAM back I have done all of these things multiple times except I only reinserted the RAM once. Oddly enough, when the internal battery is unplugged and I plug the AC adpater into the machine, the power LED flashes 3 times. I've searched for this possible LED error "code" and found nothing.  I am desperate for help, I am entering my senior year and as a computer science major it is necessary for me to have a laptop for most of my classes.  Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks

I agreed to a Lenovo update yesterday (3/21/2018 for my T440s. I remember it saying something about a Bios update and to make sure the machine was plugged in. After agreeing to everything and starting the update, after a while I looked over and noticed that it had a black screen with nothing happening for several hours. The green power button light is on, but when I press it, it just beeps at me. Even holding it down for 10 seconds or more with nothing but a series of beeps (screen stays black with green power button light on). I tried taking the battery out and letting it run out of power, then put the battery back in, plugged it back in and tried to get it to restart.

One thing you might try that works on some ThinkPads is to reset the BIOS by unplugging the coin cell battery.     That will involved removing the AC power adapter, the main battery and the bottom cover of the laptop, which is detailed on page 61 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual.    Once the base cover is removed, unplug the coin cell battery (see page 67 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual) for a few minutes to let the power drain, and then plug it back in, re-assemble the laptop and try booting it back up. Be careful when prying up the latches while removing the base cover because they can break easily, but I found that gentle prodding and an old credit card etc. can be useful in working the latches free, but you can also get special tools at most electronic stores (often referred to as "spudgers"), to help pry open the case if desired. Best of luck,

Latest BIOS updated 2.47 caused me a problem: I can not edit BIOS settings anymore.I did have BIOS settings password set. Now if I enter BIOS settings it no longer asks for a password. Instead screen flashes couple of times and then it shows BIOS screen, but all options are grey, not editable!! I have not found any way to enter password. One option that came to my mind is to remove BIOS backup battery. But I am not sure if it helps here. Any suggestions what to do?!

Hello all, I have a T440s out of warranty that has the fan error. I have had the error for the past two days  I used compressed air and that did not really work. In the past two day it has restarted, but now it won't start with the fan error. I press the power power button, the fan starts, the THinkpad logo comes up, the fan starts, then I get fan error. Video here--> https://youtu.be/Piv5mAv-y1E I understand the fan error occurs when there is a problem with a fan, or their is  a problem with on the motherboard. How does one tell the difference? I don't want to buy a fan and then realize is it the motherboard? What has the solution been. I have searched and their does not seem to be one for the T440s? Also even more frustrating, right now I can't get the unscrew the screws holding down the fan. If I can't do that how can I even replace it. Anyone know the replacement fan part number and where to get one? Right now I am looking on Amazon.

I had a T440s, but out of the blue it did not start anymore. No lights, no reaction, nothing, while I was certain battery was full. Putting my battery in someone else laptop showed battery was ok.  I exchanged the laptop for a new one and after a week I have the exact same problem. Does not work at all anymore. i use the same power adapter, could there be an issue there? Other things I do is charging my phones (iPhone and Samsung) via USB and sometimes a USB charger. There is nothing to do anymore than getting a new one again, but I don't want to experience the same, especially since I am traveling often for work and it is very inconvenient that my laptop does not work then, so I would like to know what causes the issue.

Hi, Yesterday I updated to the newest BIOS-Version (2.29). I also installed the newest Graphics Driver (Intel 10.18.10.3910). After the BIOS-Update I changed 2 settings in the BIOS:(1) I increased the RAM of the Graphics-Card from 256MB to 512MB(2) I changed the Boot-Mode from "Both" to "UEFI Only" A few hours later something weird happened: The fan suddenly started to work at a medium level (not maximum) and didn't stop even after 1 hour the fan didn't stop. I restarted the OS but the fan still didn't stop. Then I closed the LID (so the Laptop does "Suspend to RAM") and after I opened the LID the fan did stop. The same thing happened again today. So, what is this? I'm not sure if this has something to do with the BIOS/Graphics Update or maybe something in my T440s is broken? I'm running Windows 7 x64, installed in UEFI-Mode.

Hi guys, I have a strange problem here. This is actually a continuation of the thread "struck by lightning", so if this belongs there, my apologies.

Let me start from the beginning: Both my rigs were hit by lightning back in mid summer, and I had to completely rebuild both from the ground up. Rig #1 (my personal rig) has had no problems since rebuilding, but rig #2 (my sons/fiance's rig) wasn't booting up at all. I had given up on rig #2 for a month or so, then got back on it; a lot of part swaps and voltage checks later confirmed that the brand new PSU I had purchased (Corsair 850W modular) was in fact bad, even though my voltage checks showed no problems. So I purchased a 600W single rail PSU (48A on 12v rail), since it was all I could afford for the time being. HEre are the following specs for rig #2:

AMD Phenom II quad core, 3.3 GHz

ASUS M4A79XTD EVO mobo

G-Skill Ripjaws series 4x 2 GB sticks

ATi Radeon 5750 1 GB Graphics card

Corsair 600W single - rail gaming series PSU (48A on 12V rail)

Thermaltake V1 120mm cpu heatsink/fan

HD: WD 750GB

Cooling: Azza case running 2x 250mm and 4x 120mm fans

Here's the strange stuff that's going on now: I DL'd the most current drievers for all of my hardware (directly from the websites - I never use the included driver disks). When I powered it on, I got the same result from the 1st time I had issues rebuilding it (black screen, no post). I thought that maybe I had yet anoth... Read more

My Gateway MN: MS2274 is having problems charging or even turning on. I don't know much about laptops since this is my first one (bad mistake). Anyways, my charger has been getting loose so I have to adjust it to even get it to charge but when it does does charge my battery it holds charge good compared to what little I know about other computers/batteries. Now, it won't turn on at all and my charging light will blink 5 times. If anyone could help me with this problem or let me know if they have experienced the same I could use it quickly!! World of Warcraft is waiting for me!! lol Side note: My tech support is passed its warranty. I have tried taking the battery out and turning on but it does absolutely nothing, not even any blinking. Maybe battery/charger? I would love for some help with this issue!

A:Gateway MS2274 -- power outlet and power on problem

That blinking light will be an error code. If you do not have a manual with the error codes in then contact Gateway to find out what it means. I have been unable to find an on-line manual to look it up in.

Chances are that either the battery, the charging circuit on the motherboard or the charger have developed a fault.

If I have understood correctly that it does absolutely nothing with the battery removed, but with the charger connected, it is most likely the charger at fault. I would test it first to be sure before buying a new one.

I bought my laptop in, I believe, late 2010. There is a small possibility it was late 2009, but I am inclined to think it was 2010. Anyway, my laptop recently went on the fritz. Two days ago, I left it on while I was out on errands. It kept running much, much hotter and louder than usual, but I thought nothing of it. Hours later, I discovered that it had shut off, which is unusual as I had left a few applications open that would keep it on. I tried to turn it on, nothing. I noticed that the ac power light (near the ac jack) was red; it should be white to show that the power cord was plugged in and charging the battery. I searched a solution online: turn off computer (check) unplug ac, take out battery, hold power button down for 30 seconds, plug battery and ac back in, turn on computer. It didn't work the first time, but I did it for 60 seconds and then it worked. Everything looked fine, and it was charging properly and the battery was working again. I thought it was just one of those things that happens occasionally, no big deal. Last night, it went out again. Ran out of power, shut down, ac power light is red, occasionally blinks white when it "recognizes that it is charging" again or whatever. Tried the procedure described above again, more than once, but no dice. I searched more solutions online. All the solutions I found involved the computer being on, such as doing a battery check. My computer WILL NOT turn on. I CAN'T do any solutions that require it to be on... Read more

A:HP Pavilion dv7-4180us power problem - no ac power, no batte...

My computer guy tells me this is a short caused by the motherboard. I am not sure why. He says the motherboard will have to be replaced.  My computer is almost three years old. It cost about $800 new. The motherboard will be about $150, "labor costs" almost another $100. So, in total, the fix would be 1/4th of the cost of laptop three years ago. The new question is whether that is worth it, and that's not even all that is wrong. The hinge is also displaced, a problem which apparently cannot be fixed. And I had to replace my hard drive about a year ago, because apparently it was "failing." In a two year old laptop. Thank you so much, employees of hp, for helping me with my problem. I hope my sarcasm is made clear enough. If and when I buy a new laptop, you can be sure it will not be an hp. I have had nothing but problems with every hp computer I've ever bought. I hate hp, and I say with all the power of my hatred, "Screw you."

Hi everybody,

I tried to search on google about this, but it's not really help and it never happen to me before so I post here.

My PC was running normally for a long time, just couple weeks ago I sent my faulty video card (xfx nvidia 8800 ultra) to get warranty service and they sent me back another. The new one works fine, but a week later I tried to turn on my computer and there's no power at all. No lights on, no fan running, just no sign of power. So I check inside if there's any wire from the PSU is unplugged, but everything looks good, nothing seems wrong. I'm sure the power from the wall is good and the power switch on the back is on. So I tried to check the wired again, push the power cable to the mother harder and press the button, it worked. But that doesnt solve the problem, if I put something heavy near the PC or the desk is vibrating a little bit, the power turns off. I press the power button again it would not turn on until I open the case and press the power cable to the motherboard harder, it's on. I then close the side panel, it's off, no power.
This is really annoyed me, I dont know what else to do. What caused this problem? The power supply or the power button? Can somebody help me?

My system specs:
ECS G31T-M mobo, Intel E8400 Duo, 2x2GB RAM
2x2 SATA HD, nVidia 8800 ultra video card
ULTRA's 1000watt PSU

Apologies if this question has been previously answered.  I searched and couldn't find a response.   I'm still using the original HDD that came with the laptop.  I'm thinking of upgrading to an SSD and cloning the HDD to the SSD.  My question is what to do, if anything, with the, M.2 16gb cache that came with the laptop.  Should this drive be left alone as is in the laptop after the HDD to SSD upgrade?  Should it be removed?  Should anything be done to the M.2 drive if I upgrade the HDD?  My understanding is it currently speeds up the computer at start-up and with an SSD, this wouldn't be all that necessary.   I appreciate everyone's time.  Thank you.   -Rich

Make sure drivers are updated and not using a generic VGA driver. This would make the dock not work and not be able to adjust screen brightness. If it is to the point where you can hardly see it at all then it most likely is a bad screen.

On the one hand there are several model with aLG-DisplayModel: LP140WF1 (sp)(k1)P/N: 0C00349FRU: 04X0626 And the other from AUOModel: AUO B140HAN01.2FRU: 04X0436 (You can look up your displaymodel via BIOS, Everest or any related program) As far as I could find out in the world wide web there are several users reporting with a LG Display in their T440s that it is in quality inferior to the AUO Display. It seems that Lenovo is ready to replace the LG with an AUO display, sending out a tech. My question is what your experiences are and what can we, the owner of a  LG-Display, do?Is there a real quality gap between these two types of Display? My T440s, as i mentioned, has a LG Display. I can live with this one, if there are no great difference in the quality to the AUO Display. I am excited about your opinions. Thanks Fire

Don't sweat it. Both are absolutey huge upgrades over the TN panel. While the AUO is a bit better, its not worth the trouble. I have both and I like both. I did a compare on the same thread u heard about the issue.

I T440s which I updated to Windows 10.  I updated the Lenovo drivers after updating and I have the latest Trackpaad/trackpoint drivers.  I want to use the track point but not the touchpad.  When I go into settings and choose either "Classic Trackpoint" or "Trackpoint Only", the buttons on the trackpad do not work.  Help, Please.

I am trying to add a 4Gb SODIMM to a Lenovo T440s (model 20AQ0062MS with 4 Gb soldered on the motherboard). The RAM is Lenovo part number 0B47380 and should according to http://www.lenovoquickpick.com/deu/accessory/0B47380/lenovo-4gb-ddr3l-1600-pc3-12800-sodimm-memory be suitable for the T440s. I specifically checked that it is 1,35V DDR3L, and I've also tested the same module in another computer, verifying that the module itself works. This computer (BIOS and all firmware versions newest available per System Update) will not detect the added RAM at all, it just continues to report the built-in 4096 Gb as before, and does not give any POST errors. Hardware diagnostics do not report any failures in any of the components, but tests only the same 4 Gb when doing the memory test. A complete hardware reset (removal of all batteries including clock backup) did not change things at all. What am I doing wrong? This is the first time ever I encounter this problem with a ThinkPad, since I started working with the original ThinkPad 700 and 700C back in the early nineties (I used to work at IBM Helpware and OS/2 Hotline 1992-95) . Thankful for any hints. /MarcusBr, Finland

Hi, I'd like to upgrade the BIOS on my T440s from the original version [GJET83WW (2.33 )] to the latest available here as a CD ISO [GJET92WW (2.42)].How can I do this without using a CD drive? As an aside, I'm running Linux, not Windows, but that shouldn't matter for the BIOS update... Cheers.

I'm running Ubuntu on a T440s and after this weekend the computer will no longer boot. It brings up the temporary boot options listing ubuntu, ata hdd0: Samsung SSD 840 pro series, and pci lan as boot options. Selecting any of these just brings me back to the same menu. I loaded ubuntu off of a flash drive and ran boot repair tool which came back successful but still no luck. It gave me this link and I'm not sure where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated. http://paste2.org/4neavpyg

I have 3 Dell U2414H monitors that support DisplayPort 1.2 daisy chaining.  I purchased the T440s with docking station.  The laptop arrived before the dock.  It has Windows 8.1 Pro x64 running.  I setup the monitors to daisy chain off of the T440s miniDP port.  I got exactly as I should.  3 separate monitors.  I could maximize windows inside a monitor and they'd maximize to their monitor.  I could drag windows between monitors.  Everything is working. When the dock came in (today) I left the monitors daisy chained.  I did change out one cable (that I know is working) so that the DP input would attach to the dock's DP output.  I am not getting a picture on the monitors.  If I use just one monitor, and turn off DP1.2 (in the monitor's menu), I get a picture on one monitor.  Do these docks not support daisy chaining?  I've verified that I'm on FW 2.17 for the dock.  I also want to submit a support ticket with Lenovo, I just don't know how to do that yet.  Thanks!

I'm seeing the same issue, same monitors. If I plug in the DP cable directly to the laptop and it works fine. If I go through the dock, it doesn't work. I'm using Win7
