UWP App Diagnostics

Q: UWP App Diagnostics

At Build this year, we gave a sneak preview of a set of new APIs designed to provide diagnostic information about running apps. You can see the videos here and here ? but note that these were based on a pre-release implementation. So, while the Build videos are still correct on broad functionality, the final API names are almost all slightly different. Plus, we added a couple of extra features after Build.

The final versions for the upcoming release are available in the Insider builds from Build 16226, along with the corresponding SDK.

At a high level, these APIs allow an app to:
Enumerate a list of running apps, including UWP apps, Win32 apps, system services and so on.
For each app, get process-specific metrics on:
Memory usage (private commit and working set).
CPU usage.
Disk reads and writes.

For each UWP app, get additional metrics on:
Memory usage (including shared commit) equivalent to the Windows.System.MemoryManager report previously available to an app for its own usage.
State info: running, suspending, suspended, not running.
Energy quota info: under or over.
Enumerate a list of any background tasks that are active for the app, including name, trigger type and entry point.
Enumerate all the processes for the app (using an enhancement to the existing Windows.System.Diagnostics.ProcessDiagnosticInfo class that was previously restricted to an app for its own usage).
The API has a simple hierarchical structure:
The AppDiagnosticInfo type represents a single app. Callers would normally request either a single AppDiagnosticInfo for the app you?re interested in or a list of AppDiagnosticInfos if you?re interested in multiple apps.

Once you?ve gotten hold of an AppDiagnosticInfo for an app you?re interested in, you?d call GetResourceGroups to get a list of AppResourceGroupInfo objects. Each AppResourceGroupInfo corresponds to a resource group. An app can define resource groups in its manifest as a way to organize its components (foreground app, background tasks) into groups for resource management purposes. If you don?t define any explicit resource groups, the system will provide at least one (for the foreground app) plus potentially more (if you have out-of-proc background tasks, for example).

From there, you?d call any of the AppResourceGroupInfo methods to get snapshot reports of memory usage, execution and energy quota state, and the app?s running background tasks (if any) via the AppResourceGroupMemoryReport, AppResourceGroupStateReport and AppResourceGroupBackgroundTaskReport classes.

And finally, each group exposes a list of ProcessDiagnosticInfo objects.

As you can see from the class diagrams, the AppDiagnosticInfo and ProcessDiagnosticInfo each have a link to the other. This means you can get all the rich process-specific info for any running process and get the UWP-specific info for any process related to a UWP app (including Desktop Bridge apps).

These APIs are intended to support app developers who either need more diagnostic support during their own app development and testing, or who want to build a general-purpose diagnostic app and publish it in the Windows Store. Exposing information about other apps raises potential privacy concerns, so if your app uses these APIs, you?ll need to declare the appDiagnostics capability in your manifest, along with the corresponding namespace declaration:

xmlns:rescap="http://schemas.Microsoft.com/appx/manifest/foundation/ windows10/restrictedcapabilities"
IgnorableNamespaces="uap mp rescap">

<rescap:Capability Name="appDiagnostics" />

This is a restricted capability: If you submit an app with this capability to the Windows Store, this will trigger closer scrutiny. The app must be in the Developer Tools category, and we will examine your app to make sure that it is indeed a developer tool before approving the submission.

At run time, the capability also triggers a user-consent prompt the first time any of the diagnostic APIs are called:

The user is always in control: If permission is denied, then the APIs will only return information about the current app. The prompt is only shown on first use, but the user can change his or her mind any time via the privacy pages in Settings. All apps that use the APIs will be listed here, and the user can toggle permission either globally or on a per-app basis:

Given the richness of the APIs, it?s not too much of a stretch to envisage creating a UWP version of Task Manager. There are a few features that we can?t implement just yet (terminating apps and controlling system services, for example), but certainly most of the data reporting is perfectly possible with the new APIs:

The first thing to do is to request permission to access diagnostics for other apps using AppDiagnosticInfo.RequestAccessAsync. The result could be Denied, Limited (which means you can only get information for the current app package) or Allowed.

DiagnosticAccessStatus diagnosticAccessStatus =
await AppDiagnosticInfo.RequestAccessAsync();
switch (diagnosticAccessStatus)
case DiagnosticAccessStatus.Allowed:
Debug.WriteLine("We can get diagnostics for all apps."
case DiagnosticAccessStatus.Limited:
Debug.WriteLine("We can only get diagnostics for this app package."

Then, to emulate Task Manager, you?d start with a list of the ProcessDiagnosticInfo objects for all running processes.

IReadOnlyList<ProcessDiagnosticInfo> processes = ProcessDiagnosticInfo.GetForProcesses();

For each running process, you can extract the top-level process-specific information such as the ExecutableFileName and the ProcessId. You can also get the more detailed process information from each of the three reports for CpuUsage, MemoryUsage and DiskUsage.

if (processes != null)
foreach (ProcessDiagnosticInfo process in processes)
string exeName = process.ExecutableFileName;
string pid = process.ProcessId.ToString();

ProcessCpuUsageReport cpuReport = process.CpuUsage.GetReport();
TimeSpan userCpu = cpuReport.UserTime;
TimeSpan kernelCpu = cpuReport.KernelTime;

ProcessMemoryUsageReport memReport = process.MemoryUsage.GetReport();
ulong npp = memReport.NonPagedPoolSizeInBytes;
ulong pp = memReport.PagedPoolSizeInBytes;
ulong peakNpp = memReport.PeakNonPagedPoolSizeInBytes;

ProcessDiskUsageReport diskReport = process.DiskUsage.GetReport();
long bytesRead = diskReport.BytesReadCount;
long bytesWritten = diskReport.BytesWrittenCount;

For any process associated with a UWP app, the IsPackaged property is true. So, for each of these, you can get from the ProcessDiagnosticInfo to the AppDiagnosticInfo. It might seem strange that we can get AppDiagnosticInfos (plural) from a process ? but this is to allow for the possibility that a single process is associated with more than one app. That?s an extremely uncommon scenario, but it is possible in the case of VoIP apps where two or more apps in the same package can share a component running in a separate process at run time. In almost all cases, though, there will only be one AppDiagnosticInfo per process.

if (process.IsPackaged)
IList<AppDiagnosticInfo> diagnosticInfos = process.GetAppDiagnosticInfos();
if (diagnosticInfos != null && diagnosticInfos.Count > 0)
AppDiagnosticInfo diagnosticInfo = diagnosticInfos.FirstOrDefault();
if (diagnosticInfo != null)
IList<AppResourceGroupInfo> groups = diagnosticInfo.GetResourceGroups();
if (groups != null && groups.Count > 0)

From the AppDiagnosticInfo, you can walk down the hierarchy and get a collection of AppResourceGroupInfos. Then, for each AppResourceGroupInfo, you can get the UWP-specific state and memory information:

AppResourceGroupInfo group = groups.FirstOrDefault();
if (group != null)
string name = diagnosticInfo.AppInfo.DisplayInfo.DisplayName;
string description = diagnosticInfo.AppInfo.DisplayInfo.Description;
BitmapImage bitmapImage = await GetLogoAsync(diagnosticInfo);

AppResourceGroupStateReport stateReport= group.GetStateReport();
if (stateReport != null)
string executionStatus = stateReport.ExecutionState.ToString();
string energyStatus = stateReport.EnergyQuotaState.ToString();

AppResourceGroupMemoryReport memoryReport = group.GetMemoryReport();
if (memoryReport != null)
AppMemoryUsageLevel level = memoryReport.CommitUsageLevel;
ulong limit = memoryReport.CommitUsageLimit;
ulong totalCommit = memoryReport.TotalCommitUsage;
ulong privateCommit = memoryReport.PrivateCommitUsage;
ulong sharedCommit = totalCommit - privateCommit;

Note: to get the packaged logo from the app, there?s a little extra work. You call GetLogo from the AppDisplayInfo to return the data as a stream; if there are multiple logos available, this will return the largest one that is within the specified size.

private async Task<BitmapImage> GetLogoAsync(AppDiagnosticInfo app)
RandomAccessStreamReference stream =
app.AppInfo.DisplayInfo.GetLogo(new Size(64, 64));
IRandomAccessStreamWithContentType content = await stream.OpenReadAsync();
BitmapImage bitmapImage = new BitmapImage();
await bitmapImage.SetSourceAsync(content);
return bitmapImage;

Once you?ve collected all the various detailed metrics you?re interested in, it?s a simple matter to populate your viewmodel for data-binding purposes, to perform data analytics or to do whatever other processing you might want.

In a later post, we?ll look at how you can integrate the diagnostic APIs with existing developer tools such as Visual Studio and Appium.

My puter has been giving me error messages that I didn't have enough RAM to open some pages on the internet, so I did what any self respecting gameaholic would do, I went and bought more. I installed 768 SDRAM. And low and behold, I now have lots and lots of memory and no longer get those pesky little messages. However, when I check settings to see the performance of my new memory, it says that I only have 62% of the RAM available. This is with no windows open, I'm not on the internet, nothing. How could this be?..Is there a diagnostics program I can run that will tell me what hog is in my RAM? (no pun intended)...my system is a Windows 98 with a Pentium II. I read extensively on my mb to get the correct memory, so I don't think that is the problem...what the heck could it be?

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi guys

Im looking for any computer based diagnostic software or "hardware and software" (similar to vehicle diagnotics)

I have used some software that scans every sensor and any software and data stored on any drive.

but would like something a lot more thorough

such as, software that scans everything such as the voltages on any sensor and any possible piece of hardware,What is being stored and can be "rescued" from any device connected to the said computer/s

and so on.. does anyone know of anything like this?

A:PC Diagnostics ?

With all the different Hardware and Software manufacturers out there, and all the make and models of components within all the different computers, you won't find any 1 program capable of reading everything. Closest thing I have seen would be the Ultimate Boot CD which contains dozens of freeware programs for hardware diagnosis, but nothing really for software.

JA8231 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Wish I had good news for you, but I don't ... The UEFI diagnostics you refer to are linked to the Win8.1 page for your PC, but NOT to the Win10 page: http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=5229456&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4158 This could be a simple oversight by HP, in which you could then download and install the diagnostics from the Win8.1 page.  Or, it could more likely be that those do not work in Win10 -- in which you're then out of luck. My suggestion is to try downloading and install them anyway, they might just work.Good Luck

I was going to reboot when I thought I should test it as the laptop is around 2 and a half years old. I had a post going in the security thread until I realized it wasn't a virus problem... it was a hardware problem. Could anyone give me some advice or possibly a link to a diagnostic tool that would help me solve my problem.

Windows 2k freezes at the splash screen so I can only run my computer in safe mode. This leads me to believe it might not be a critical piece of hardware that's acting up.. maybe? Anyways, I haven't altered any of the hardware recently. This problem just sort of popped out of the blue.

What is the difference(s) between the 40 Minute "Full Test" Diagnostics run online on the Dell website at http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/servicetag/CQ37W52/diagnose?s=BSD and the Diagnostics run via Dell Support Assist software (10 Minute "Default" Scan & 15 Minute "Stress Scan" = Total of 25 Minutes)?
Since the Dell Support Assist Diagnostics are only 25 Minutes total, that is 15 Minutes less time (37.5% less time) than the 40 Minutes online Diagnostics.

I recently tackled a friend's failed hard drive on her Dell Latitude D610 laptop. It's a 60 GB drive that was only booting to a blue screen of death. I removed the drive, hooked it up to a desktop, and ran Spinrite on the drive (for 2 days). It recovered a bad sector and gave the rest of the drive a clean bill of health.

Feeling pretty confident, I put the drive back in the friend's laptop, only to have it boot straight from the BIOS into Dell's diagnostic mode. I exited out of the diagnostic mode and tried to boot again. Same thing, no Windows screen, just straight into Dell Diagnostics. I've tried running the diagnostics (nothing wrong) and restoring the BIOS presets, but I can't get it to skip the Diagnostics and just boot into Windows. Any ideas?

I have being trying to diagnose a fault with a laptop, some over heating problem. I have used a diagnostics card it keeping spitting out the error code 'AE' which means clear boot flag. I'm guessing the bios is performing its own checks and intefering which the card checks.

What can i do rectify this. Manuals not very good and i been trying to google it but to no avail..

Hardware= diagnostic card plugs into the parallel port of the laptop powered by the usb port and has a two digit display, Dell c640 laptop
If any one can help or set me straight i be grateful.

A:Diagnostics card

Never had a good experience with diagnostics cards. All the ones I've seen are pretty useless and simply don't work well, if at all. Most moderen PCs has diag cards built in on whether it's beep codes or the diag LCDs on the back of most modern Dells. If the PC is having an over heating issue a diag card isn't gonna help anyway.

To fix a laptop that is over heating you should open the laptop up and blow the dust out of the laptop paying special attention to the heat sinks and fans. While it is open make sure the fans are spinning and that the heatsinks are in place and securly attached.

What are the symptoms the laptop is having any? Maybe it's not just overheating?

I've had some blue screen errors in the past and I wanted to run some diagnostics on my hardware before I play any games on it. I ran the dell diagnostic tool that came with my pc, but it requires user input for the video card test. A lot of the questions aren't straightforward and so I could have gotten error due to this. Should I just run a third-party test instead? For the memory test...should I just run memtest86?

Also, when updating my ati catalyst drivers...is it okay to just install over an older set. I attempted to do clean install once, but ran into a lot of problems.

Either that the LSC is not ok or it has encountered issue during the test that was not able to verify.
Try to uninstall it from programs and features under control panel and download a fresh updated copy from the support site and see if that would work.

Hello,   I have an Envy 15t laptop, and the original battery seems to not be functioning properly (the initial charge is quite low and the laptop does not last a long time).  I bought a new battery to remedy this issue, and I was hoping to do a calibration test.  While doing this, I ran into a strange problem.   For some reason, when I try to access the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (by pressing ESC on bootup, followed by F2), it looks different now than it did before (I don't think it's because of the new battery before though, since I still had the old menu even with the new battery at some point).  The old menu used to be more of a GUI style, something like Figure 9 in the following link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259 Now though, under HP PC Hardware Diagnostics, it doesn't look like a GUI (it's more text based), and I only have the following options: Memory Test, Hard Drive Check, Language, Exit.  I no longer see a "Components" option, and I certainly cannot access the Battery option from within Components (since the Components option is missing).  Any ideas about why this is the case?  Thank you.

Hi, Shutdown the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  From here, you should be able to select the Diagnostic Menu option ( f2 ). Regards, DP-K

Since dropping Norton, I am without a system diagnostic program like "Win Doctor". Can anyone suggest a program that will safely do the same thing? It doesn't have to be free. It just has to work. I'm running XP SP2.

I need some help:
I accidentally shut down the internet during a "dell diagnostics test" which closed everything down in the middle of running the test.  It was running slow so I had to restart.  Just wondering if that hurt anything on the computer?  Not sure how bad it is for restarting in the middle of a diagnostics.
New to PC's, so any reassurance or help would be great.

I have recently started back my old computer with a new hard drive and 2 8800 nvidia gts graphics card. When i first started to boot my computer up i get the blue screen after it tells me to repair or start windows normally. Then it would restart and repeat the same process. If i select start normally it gets the blue screen as the windows 7 icon is appearing. For me to get my computer to start working or not get the blue screen i either have to pres DEL to go to the start up menu and boot from there for pres F8 to choose a boot device, then after a few tries it loads up. But whenever i turn my computer off it repeats the same process. It eventually turns on but today it took me about 10 minutes to keep trying and i dont know exactly what is wrong with my computer. Please help.

Are there diagnostics that can determine if the Bluetooth Radio hardware is working properly?

I cannot get a new Microsoft Sculpt Bluetooth (dongle-less) Mouse to be recognized after putting it in discovery mode.

My phone can see the mouse, so I'm pretty sure the mouse is not broken.

The computer cannot see the phone, so I'm pretty sure that something is hosed with the computer hardware or the O/S, but all the drivers seem to be in order.

Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.
ASUS P8H67-I Deluxe m/b.
Qualcomm Atheros Communications Port_#0004.Hub_#0003

The ASUS m/b has built-in Bluetooth, and the ASUS Bluetooth drivers are up-to-date and the Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator is up-to-date, and both are enabled and "working properly", and the Bluetooth icon is in my system tray.

I can see the Bluetooth Radio blinking on the back of the m/b.

Here are the current settings.

[x] Allow Bluetooth devices to find this computer
[x] Allow Bluetooth devices to connect to this computer
[x] Alert me when a new Bluetooth device wants to connect
[x] Show Bluetooth icon in the notification area

[ ] Turn off the Bluetooth Adapter

Other than scannow /f is there anything else built into Windows that will run a system check/diagnostics ? I suspect I have created a system that may have some wires crossed as far as performance goes ?

Or..will running a repair install correct/fix any issues in my current installation...and...assuming I do it properly per the tutorial...is there any danger of loosing documents and/or files after the repair isntall ?

Wires crossed? SFC just checks your system files against a copy in stores and compares them.

A repair install will only help if there are damaged files which SFC should pick up.

There is always some danger of losing files/documents so it is always a good idea to backup, have a restore point, and an OS dvd.

Wanted to make sure I described the situation correctly.
I have Windows installed on a single Hard Drive computer with RAID selected (don't ask me why that's how I received it)
I have a Kingston SSD.
ePSA passes.
Dell Diagnostics Long Test gives a "S.M.A.R.T. Wear Level use warning" on the SSD
Kingston's diagnostics software reports no errors on both short and extended S.M.A.R.T tests.
I don't see anything wrong with the laptop, except I have now started imagining sometimes Windows is slow to boot up. Otherwise laptop runs great.
So how can I reliably discover if my SSD is dying or not given two conflicting reports? Should I trust Dell's Diagnostics over the manufacturer (Kingston)?

A:SSD Diagnostics Warning

Does the Kingston test note anything about "wear" or how much life is remaining?
I have Samsung and Intel SSD's.  Their diagnostic programs also include the health of the SSD and the Intel even includes how much life is left.
With a single boot drive, you should change the BIOS to "AHCI" (default BIOS setting for most PC's).  This may have an affect on the boot time.

If a PC freezes, and nothing you do can bring it out of the freeze where all you can do is force it to shut down so you can re-start it... is there a log in Windows where you can go to see if there is an error code of some kind that can hopefully provide a clue as to why the system froze up?

A:PC Freeze Diagnostics

If anything it would be in your event viewer, but I would guess you will not find anything but "unexpected shutdown"

What are you doing when the PC freezes?

I can't find the WD Data Lifeguard CD download anywhere on their site, only here now: Data Lifeguard Diagnostic For Western Digital Drives

The more direct Download link there I've bookmarked is Western Digital Data Lifeguard CD ISO (extract first). Please advise if there is a reason not to use this link.

What could explain why a major tech company would only offer bootable floppy diagnostics for all of their drives old and new? I mean they literally repeat the floppy download on every single model's Downloads page. Does that strike anyone else to be as mammoth as Support incompetence can get?

A:Where did WD links to CD Diagnostics go?

Hey Greg,

It seems that you have to look up the model number at WD for the drive first before seeing the downloads for Data Lifeguard.WD Support / Downloads / Select Product
Here's an example:

WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD VelociRaptor
