Q: USB/wifi tethering not working after system restore

I did a system restore on my win 7 laptop, after which it could only establish a partial connection with my android device. I've tried to play around with the connection settings to no avail :/. What am I going to do next?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Having real trouble with tethering wifi. I have new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (Android 4.4) which I am trying to tether to a new Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro. Since I have tried lots of stuff without success, I've replicated my testing across two computers (the other a Lenovo X240) and also tried both with my work phone, which is an iPhone 6+, for comparison and to hopefully help someone smart come up with a diagnosis.
Having tried 2 x laptops (Yoga, X240 both running Windows 8.1 64-bit) with 2 x phones, in each case trying both wifi tether and USB tether, I can report the following:
X240, iPhone, wifi - OK
X240, iPhone, USB - OK
X240, Note 4, wifi - "Can't connect to this network"
X240, Note 4, USB - OK
YOGA, iPhone, wifi - "Can't connect to this network"
YOGA, iPhone, USB - (no response at all - no error, no message, no connection)
YOGA, Note 4, wifi - "Can't connect to this network"
YOGA, Note 4, USB - OK
As a sidebar, I also tried Bluetooth connection on the Yoga - literally nothing. I was able to pair the devices, the Android phone reported "you are sharing the internet over Bluetooth" (but I think that's only because it was paired and the share mode was turned on) - but not a peep, not a failure message or an error, and certainly no internet connection!
I suppose the 'good news', since my main goal here is to get online on the Yoga laptop using my Note 4 for internet access, is that it works with the USB connection - so worst case... Read more

Im new to both the Lenovo Yoga Tab3 16Gb and this forum. Not on the internet at home.Comments suggest that I cannot get the internet via a usb stick and mention "Wifi tethering from phone" ?Going to buy a 'pay as go sim free', to enable me to have internet data allowance.Does it matter what company I go with?Does the mobile sim card go physically in the back slot of the Lenovo?Do I have to have a very modern mobile to enable me to tether it to my Lenovo and access my data allowance?Sorry if these are very basic questions. But want to access internet away from library. Can anyone help me please?

so, the same as usual when it comes to my luck: I'm trying to tether my internet connection from my note 5 to my PC via USB, and it doesn't work. here are a few details that I can give you of what occurs when I try to do this:

I plug in my phone via usb, and it recognizes it off the bat.
I go to my settings in android and enable usb tethering.
windows makes the sound that happens when you disconnect a device, then proceeds to slow down. WAY down.
I hover over the network icon in the system tray, and it just shows the line for loading or identifying.
clicking on the icon or trying to open the network and sharing center while I'm in usb tether mode results in nothing.
I did however manage to disable tethering, them open the network and sharing center, then enable my usb tethering. from there, it shows my device in the center, but says that it is disabled.
I right click and select ENABLE, it says "ENABLING", then "ENABLED", but does not actually enable my device.

So my little sisters boyfriend deleted all the history on my Google Chrome, 'to free up space' and I think he's been on something weird on my laptop, and want to find out. I googled how to get the history back and the other thing I fully understood was to do a System Restore to back before he deleted it. I did that three times to different points in time, definitely before he did it and it hasn't changed anything. If anyone else has any ideas they would be much appreciated, although please bear in mind I'm not massively great with computers! Thank you

A:How to restore Chrome history, system restore not working?

I don't think you can get it back unless you had a backup, System Restore doesn't affect data so that's why it doesn't work.

Why do you need the History restored anyways?

Hello,

I have a tablet that runs windows 8 and I have Outlook 2013. Outlook works fine when I'm at home and connected to my Road Runner internet (cable) provider.

When I'm on the road, and I try to tether to my cell phone for internet service, it will not send or receive email via outlook. I can surf the net and my Yahoo email account works fine. I called Microsoft and they blamed it on the slow internet service???? I have 4G and not buying that one.
**I have a Driod X RAZER phone and use Verizon for my carrier. I use the "Mobile Hotspot" on my phone to connect my tablet to the internet when I'm on the road.
Any help or ideas. Thanks.

A:Outlook 2013 not working when tethering

Most (or all?) ISPs will not let you use their outgoing mail server unless you are connected via their network. If this is the case you will need to use a different SMTP (outgoing) server or use web mail access instead of an email client.

I understand that some (many?) are now also not allowing use of their (incoming) mail server unless you are connected via their network. If this is the case you will need to use web mail access instead of an email client.

Hi!
I recently noticed that when I do a Google search, the link redirects me to random ad sites, making it nearly impossible to get to the page that I want. I tried System Restore, only to realize it won't let me go past the last step. Also, my CD/DVD drive doesn't seem to be working. You can watch movies and discs in the drive, but it will not recognize a blank disc for burning music or photos.
I have AVG, and it has only detected tracking cookies. I scan with Malwarebytes on a regular basis, and it never seems to find anything. I scanned with AdAware, and it detected tracking cookies as well. I clean out my Cookies and Temporary Internet Files folder quite frequently, but I can't seem to fix the problem.

Thanks for your help!

Accidentally deleted important files, system restore not working
I accidentally deleted some important files when trying to free up space on my laptop. Now, when I startup, it cannot go to my user. I lost my email settings, other functions. My docs are accessible by going to 'My Computer' then to drive C: then to the user, etc. However, from my Start menu, I can't get to them by simply clicking 'My Documents'.

I've tried to do some 'repairs' using Microsoft Knowledgebase but so far have been unsuccessful. I tried some of the suggested things and have made alist of many of the files that are missing when I tried to do a system repair. These files are not in the recovery section c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386. The list is here:

Lmmib2.dll
spider.exe
clipbrd.exe
hostmib.dll
staxmem.dll
admexs.dll
appconf.dll
iisadmin.dll
iisfecnv.dll
infocomm.dll

I ran HiJackThis and the results are below.

any ideas would be helpful.

So. This is a weird one. Today I started getting a strange error message pop up that stated "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." It seems to pop up at random. First couple times, I ignored it. When it persisted, I googled it, only to find most people with this error are having issues with links in outlook. I do not use outlook or IE, and wasn't doing anything browser related during any of the errors, so, lazily, I ignored it again. Finally, when one of these errors kicked me out of my Portal game, I decided I had to do something about it. I decided to just system restore before I went through any huge hassle before I tried figuring anything major out.

System restore went swimmingly, didn't seem to have any issues. But.. My keyboard and mouse, both wireless and usb, weren't working upon reboot. Okay. Different port. Nope. All of them are dead. All. Even the motherboard ones in the back. NO usb device I plug in works, or even registers. To make it weirder, I see that my wireless isn't connecting (the internet is fine) and my sound is muted. Sound was on when I started system restore. It's like all input into my machine is no longer accepted. I know the CD drive works, because inserting a CD even brought up the autoplay window, even though I can't actually input anything.

I haven't messed with it too much, as I'm very tired and annoyed, but if anyone has some clues, please tun... Read more

Hello to all,

A month back I accidentally deleted the wow6432 node from my registry under system_user. I believe this is the root of all my problems. Once I did that, my toshiba c885 D 64 bit would not boot. I forced the computer to shut down and pressed f12 to get to the system recovery options. I then restored to a point before my blunder. Well, my laptop worked for a while and then magically the screen goes black and will not reboot. I did sestem restore a few more times since I could get a little bit of work done in between restoring and the screen turning black again. After I was fed up with having to run system restore every other day, I decided to run system refresh to keep my files but reset everything else. After restoring I am getting the same problem and find myself again running system restore every other day just to keep working.

My questions are if I completely reinstall windows 8 and start from scratch, will this definitely solve the problem? I thought system refresh would have worked, so I'm not sure. Also, are there any other available options for me to fix my computer without starting from scratch?

Thanks so much in advance! -Aaron

Hi awrontherise,

Since you did not provide your specs, all my suggestions are just speculative in nature; however, I can tell you that a clean install will fix all system software corruption but if you also have hardware and/or driver issues they will have to be addressed separately. So, based on what you have told us so far, I would recommend this as your first step:

Repair Install Windows 8

Now, if the above doesn't work, you may have to take this route:

Clean Install - Windows 8

Good luck.

Hello,
I will try to explain this as best as I can so if you need any more information please ask and I will gladly answer. If this is in the wrong forum I apologize. If it is please redirect me and I will post it there.

I have built 11 computers, all containing the EXACT same hardware and software. I install windows 7(64bit), all the drivers for each component, and activated the copy of windows. The pc will run completely fine running any program I ask it to. The problem does not happen until I reboot the computer, now this is not always on the first reboot. These computers could last a few days and then I reboot and it all breaks. When I randomly reboot the system it will boot up showing problems and asking for a system restore. So I do the system restore and reinstall a few drivers and the same problem will persist.
I eventually get fed up with the whole process and decide to completely reinstall Windows thinking maybe I could have done something wrong(been doing this for 15 years no problem but it happens). After a completely random(as far as I can tell) amount of time and reboots the system will do it again. I am completely stumped on this issue and could really use the help. I have managed to get 2 working for a few weeks now but they hard bent cpu pins from the factory and I straightened them out. The other ones I have checked and they are fine(so it seems).
The System is running an ASUS P8Z77-v PRO motherboard, EVGA Nvidia 650 TI graphics card, i7-3770 CPU(may be an... Read more

Windows XP Pro SP3.  Although a number of problems with this PC have been corrected with the help of members on this site, there still remain a few. One of the present problems is that System Restore does not work, nor will regedit export its files. I'm using erunt so the latter is no hardship.
I ran rkill and FSS - the logs are below.
One of the members here stated that the System Restore problem was solved by by re-installing sr.inf from the c:\windows\inf folder. I tried this, but it led me to a BSOD and a memory dump. I booted back with "last known good configuration" and it's back now to where it was.
I'd be grateful for any help in correcting the remaining errors.

I tend to have problems with Firefox taking an unusually long time to load pages, and normally, I can solve that with using a System Restore. This time, though, I can't get System Restore to work. I've tried several times from various checkpoints, but each time I get a message saying "Incomplete Restoration."

I know this topic has been posted before, and I tried using the advice given in this thread http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/459314-system-restore-incomplete.html. I disabled AVG Anti-Virus, but I didn't help. I know from the previous thread that you'll need to look at the system restore logs in order to help; so, I'll just post those now to save time.

Hello there. i'm having some trouble with my computer. i came home from a two week trip to find my computer had the "antivirus 2009" virus on it and i think it may have had a couple others as well. my brother inlaw tried to download something and thats what he got. what was happening at first was my computer would just restart itself. then when i typed something in google the links would redirect me to an ad search site or some random site. well eventually i fixed the redirect problem (can't remember how now). so i went around many different forums and eventually read about hijackthis. so when i tried to install hijackthis it wouldn't work...i would click install>run and nothing would happen. same with spybot search and destroy, i would install but when it would try to download something it would just stop working. When i tried System restore it said "windows cannot restore to this point please choose another restore point" none of them would work. i tried creating a new system restore point but it said "cannot create a system restore point please restart your computer and try again". thats when i read something about UnHackMe. i installed and ran that program which enabled me to install hijackthis. now i have hijackthis installed but dont know anything about registry keys. so if anyone can help i would appreciate it very much. P.S. Also i have noticed that i can't burn an audio cd. i can burn data cds and dvds but just not audio cds. can this... Read more

My System Restore will not create any restore points. Every attempt is met with the error "System Restore was unable to create a restore point. Please restart the computer and try again". The service is running, and I have turned Restore off, rebooted, then turned it back on to no avail. I cannot find any warnings in Event Viewer. I have even re-installed System Restore and run SFC to no avail. I have run different rootkit and anti-virus programs, but cannot find any of either. Does anyone else have any ideas?

I had similar trouble and my appeal for help resulted in LOTS of advice but nothing worked for me. (A search would find my original posting).

What did work for me was my installing the software Super AntiSpyware Free Edition and discovering by chance that there is a Repair section and listed is a repair of Windows System Restore.

I clicked on this and miraculously (!) my problem was solved.

I now have Super AntiSpyware Professional installed but my problem was solved with the Free Edition. Maybe worth a try?

My problems is I cannot restore a point through System Restore.. I also try to restore system through Safe Mode, but still it fails here's the snapshot:So what I did, I clicked open System Protection and a prompt box appeared:Next, I saw something weird at the system icons..I saw a x icon on network icon but I have my Internet Connection but when I point the cursor at the network icon it says:I also saw the Windows Security Center balloon at the taskbar it says I have to fix "something"When I clicked it, here's the snapshot:I turned on Virus Protection, and after that it says:Another is the Sounds, My sound device is working properly, the volume is on maximum mode but still no sounds to hear.. I cant' hear any sounds from my music folder or even in Youtube..Next, I also go to Control Panel to manage an account.. But when I clicked it, no windows flashed on the screen. What I did now, I search the problem on Google, and I found some tips on how to solve it..One says:It's caused by disabled services - I had the same problem with MS automatic updates.-Click on the pearl then type "Services" in the search box (Don't type in the quotes, of course).-Right click on Services (with the gears beside it) and pick Run As Administrator (I don't know if this in necessary, but I run everything in Vista as admin...That way programmes have an XP feel to them and actually, you know, work.)-Head down the list to "Volume Shadow Copy", double c... I recently downloaded some drivers as I was trying to install a new printer who's software would'nt load. This did'nt solve the problem. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. I then thought I would use System restore to go back to a happier time when I had the first Brother printer. I actually used System restore about 4 times in one afternoon and now it won't let me restore any further back than the 28th. I thought if I could go back far enough the drivers I had downloaded would be dormant and save me trouble. I am a complete novice so if you can help me with this problem please post it in baby language, thanks in advance.

My main problem is that I accidentally uninstalled MS Office earlier today from my Dell Inspiron which I bought in 2012; the second problem is that I can't do a system restore to get it back to the point before the accidental un-installation. I'm on Windows 8. It keeps telling me there's something wrong but when I run a check on the C: drive, everything comes up fine. I opened the computer in safe mode, do a system restore and same thing happens - error.

I don't know if I can locate the original MS Office card that I received when I got the computer, to re-install the program, which is why I'm in a bit of a panic right now. Help is appreciated -- thanks!

System restore will not help getting back Office, it will have to be re-installed.

So when I go to My Computer in C drive, right click it, select Properties and Click on the System Restore tab, it shows that it's turned off for all my drives. So I uncheck the Turn off Sys. Restore and click on Apply then it gives me a msg box "System Restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives. Please restart your machine and try again." I restart my machine and try again several times, but it shows the same thing. Plz help.

I cannot get my system to perform a successful restore using the System Restore feature of Windows XP SP2. I think we had a discussion on this in the past where one of your restore points is bad and if one is bad, then all are bad. This may or may not be the case, but I am sure that a staff member in this area will be able to expound on it.

I have windows xp media centre service pack 2 ( use Norton Internet Security) and can't get system restore to work. I've tried many restore points and get this message:

Restoration Incomplete
Your computer cannot be restored to ____. Pick another restore point and try again.

Then a window pops up and reads:

Symantec Service Framework has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Please tell microsoft about this problem. Send error report.

Then another window pops up from the task bar which reads:

Norton
Your antivirus program has been turned off and computer not protected. When I check my Norton antivirus program its says I'm connected and protected.

Can you help with system restore?

Hi, AllI have just (Flawlessly) Upgraded my Desktop PC from Vista, to W7, Immediately after installation completed I Checked for and Installed the Latest Updates, I then Installed NIS 2010, once again without a hitch, Installed Latest Updates. etc. apps. Drivers, etc. etc.Everything went very smoothly, no problems with Upgrade Hanging at 62% or any of the other hitches that have been reported, and I was expecting. However I am left with one Major Problem, = I decided to test System Restore. I manually set a Restore Point (before placing a File/Folder 0n desktop) and then did a System Restore to this aforementioned restore point, the resulting Dialogue Box was ="System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer's files and settings were not changed.Details; System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore, (0x80070005)"I have Tried Turning Off all the the apps that are turned On, in NIS 2010 including " Product Tamper Protection" I have done 5 tests to date, varying from all Protection off, to selected portions turned Off, Inc " Product Tamper Protection" only Off. All have Failed to Restore, and produce the above "Dialogue Box"Any suggestions Gratefully Received, Thanks, Dave.

Hello first post here, I have a slight problem, can you help?

I have a Advent T9202. I went to restore the PC the other day with the disc they supply with the PC. It wouldnt restore and has totally wiped my hard drive. Not bothered about that as I backed everythin up before starting the system restore. I rang the support line up aftertrying numeorus things and they told me to download a diagnostic toll for checking the RAM and hard drives. The RAM checked out OK but when I try to check the HD it says non detected. In the BIOS both hard drives are detected. Is there anything I can try? I dont think the hard drives are faulty as they were working fine 10 minutes before I tried to restore.

Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

I also tried disabling my antivirus program, but the same thing happens. I am out of ideas. Any suggestions would be wonderful.

Hi all

I need to restore my xp pro to an earlier date due to removing a programme in error, however when i try to
restore, it goes through the process then i get the message unable to restore to this date.
I have tried numerous dates and its the same.
Tried it it safe mode as well and still the same.
Tried to undo the last restore event and it says 'Undo Incomplete' 'SR was unable to reverse the restoration'
Done a scan with Avast and Malwarebytes and all show clean.
All my update have been done an all is up too date.
I did not try switching off SR off, as i know if i do it may remove all restore dates and then i have lost my programme
anyway.
My settings show it at 12% which is maximum (this is not where i set it originally which was 5%) so not sure how that happened.
The programme i removed in error was 'LG cyberlink power dvd' and it looks like it removed a decoder from my WMP and now i'm not able to view DVD,s in WMP that's why i need to restore (also i need SR to work).
I downloaded cyberlink from the website only to find it was an upgrade and not the player so unable to install that as its saying it cannot find powerdvd on my system

Any help will be very much appreciated

Kind Regards
Rozzer

You could try this link. Just be aware that CNET tends to bundle other software with its downloads so choose 'Custom' or 'Manual' install. Whatever you do, don't use 'Easy', 'Quick' or 'Automatic' options and look at every screen carefully before you click 'Next' !

http://download.cnet.com/CyberLink-PowerDVD/3000-13632_4-10352449.html

Alternatively you could try the freeware VLC player, which you can get from here -

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.en_GB.html

I use the VLC player as my default for all video and music and I have yet to find a format it can't play.

Once you start a System Restore it is irreversible, you get a warning to that effect before you actually click on the 'Restore now' button, which is why you cannot undo it.
