I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If you are talking about System Restore Points you can un-do the restore.

Having real trouble with tethering wifi. I have new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (Android 4.4) which I am trying to tether to a new Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro. Since I have tried lots of stuff without success, I've replicated my testing across two computers (the other a Lenovo X240) and also tried both with my work phone, which is an iPhone 6+, for comparison and to hopefully help someone smart come up with a diagnosis.
Having tried 2 x laptops (Yoga, X240 both running Windows 8.1 64-bit) with 2 x phones, in each case trying both wifi tether and USB tether, I can report the following:
X240, iPhone, wifi - OK
X240, iPhone, USB - OK
X240, Note 4, wifi - "Can't connect to this network"
X240, Note 4, USB - OK
YOGA, iPhone, wifi - "Can't connect to this network"
YOGA, iPhone, USB - (no response at all - no error, no message, no connection)
YOGA, Note 4, wifi - "Can't connect to this network"
YOGA, Note 4, USB - OK
As a sidebar, I also tried Bluetooth connection on the Yoga - literally nothing. I was able to pair the devices, the Android phone reported "you are sharing the internet over Bluetooth" (but I think that's only because it was paired and the share mode was turned on) - but not a peep, not a failure message or an error, and certainly no internet connection!
I suppose the 'good news', since my main goal here is to get online on the Yoga laptop using my Note 4 for internet access, is that it works with the USB connection - so worst case... Read more

Im new to both the Lenovo Yoga Tab3 16Gb and this forum. Not on the internet at home.Comments suggest that I cannot get the internet via a usb stick and mention "Wifi tethering from phone" ?Going to buy a 'pay as go sim free', to enable me to have internet data allowance.Does it matter what company I go with?Does the mobile sim card go physically in the back slot of the Lenovo?Do I have to have a very modern mobile to enable me to tether it to my Lenovo and access my data allowance?Sorry if these are very basic questions. But want to access internet away from library. Can anyone help me please?

so, the same as usual when it comes to my luck: I'm trying to tether my internet connection from my note 5 to my PC via USB, and it doesn't work. here are a few details that I can give you of what occurs when I try to do this:

I plug in my phone via usb, and it recognizes it off the bat.
I go to my settings in android and enable usb tethering.
windows makes the sound that happens when you disconnect a device, then proceeds to slow down. WAY down.
I hover over the network icon in the system tray, and it just shows the line for loading or identifying.
clicking on the icon or trying to open the network and sharing center while I'm in usb tether mode results in nothing.
I did however manage to disable tethering, them open the network and sharing center, then enable my usb tethering. from there, it shows my device in the center, but says that it is disabled.
I right click and select ENABLE, it says "ENABLING", then "ENABLED", but does not actually enable my device.

So my little sisters boyfriend deleted all the history on my Google Chrome, 'to free up space' and I think he's been on something weird on my laptop, and want to find out. I googled how to get the history back and the other thing I fully understood was to do a System Restore to back before he deleted it. I did that three times to different points in time, definitely before he did it and it hasn't changed anything. If anyone else has any ideas they would be much appreciated, although please bear in mind I'm not massively great with computers! Thank you

A:How to restore Chrome history, system restore not working?

I don't think you can get it back unless you had a backup, System Restore doesn't affect data so that's why it doesn't work.

Why do you need the History restored anyways?

Hello,

I have a tablet that runs windows 8 and I have Outlook 2013. Outlook works fine when I'm at home and connected to my Road Runner internet (cable) provider.

When I'm on the road, and I try to tether to my cell phone for internet service, it will not send or receive email via outlook. I can surf the net and my Yahoo email account works fine. I called Microsoft and they blamed it on the slow internet service???? I have 4G and not buying that one.
**I have a Driod X RAZER phone and use Verizon for my carrier. I use the "Mobile Hotspot" on my phone to connect my tablet to the internet when I'm on the road.
Any help or ideas. Thanks.

A:Outlook 2013 not working when tethering

Most (or all?) ISPs will not let you use their outgoing mail server unless you are connected via their network. If this is the case you will need to use a different SMTP (outgoing) server or use web mail access instead of an email client.

I understand that some (many?) are now also not allowing use of their (incoming) mail server unless you are connected via their network. If this is the case you will need to use web mail access instead of an email client.

Hi!
I recently noticed that when I do a Google search, the link redirects me to random ad sites, making it nearly impossible to get to the page that I want. I tried System Restore, only to realize it won't let me go past the last step. Also, my CD/DVD drive doesn't seem to be working. You can watch movies and discs in the drive, but it will not recognize a blank disc for burning music or photos.
I have AVG, and it has only detected tracking cookies. I scan with Malwarebytes on a regular basis, and it never seems to find anything. I scanned with AdAware, and it detected tracking cookies as well. I clean out my Cookies and Temporary Internet Files folder quite frequently, but I can't seem to fix the problem.

Thanks for your help!

A:Google links redirect, CD/DVD drive not working, system restore not working.

Please download RootRepeal Rootkit Detector and save it to your Desktop. * Close all programs and temporarily disable your anti-virus, Firewall and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. * Click this link to see a list of such programs and how to disable them. * Create a new folder on your hard drive called RootRepeal (C:\RootRepeal) and extract (unzip) RootRepeal.zip. (click here if you're not sure how to do this. Vista users refer to this link.) * Open the folder and double-click on RootRepeal.exe to launch it. If using Vista, right-click and Run as Administrator... * Click on the Files tab, then click the Scan button. * In the Select Drives, dialog Please select drives to scan: select all drives showing, then click OK. * When the scan has completed, a list of files will be generated in the RootRepeal window. * Click on the Save Report button and save it as rootrepeal.txt to your desktop or the same location where you ran the tool from. * Open rootrepeal.txt in Notepad and copy/paste its contents in your next reply. * Exit RootRepeal and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.Note: If RootRepeal cannot complete a scan and results in a crash report, try repeating the scan in "Safe Mode".

So. This is a weird one. Today I started getting a strange error message pop up that stated "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." It seems to pop up at random. First couple times, I ignored it. When it persisted, I googled it, only to find most people with this error are having issues with links in outlook. I do not use outlook or IE, and wasn't doing anything browser related during any of the errors, so, lazily, I ignored it again. Finally, when one of these errors kicked me out of my Portal game, I decided I had to do something about it. I decided to just system restore before I went through any huge hassle before I tried figuring anything major out.

System restore went swimmingly, didn't seem to have any issues. But.. My keyboard and mouse, both wireless and usb, weren't working upon reboot. Okay. Different port. Nope. All of them are dead. All. Even the motherboard ones in the back. NO usb device I plug in works, or even registers. To make it weirder, I see that my wireless isn't connecting (the internet is fine) and my sound is muted. Sound was on when I started system restore. It's like all input into my machine is no longer accepted. I know the CD drive works, because inserting a CD even brought up the autoplay window, even though I can't actually input anything.

I haven't messed with it too much, as I'm very tired and annoyed, but if anyone has some clues, please tun... Read more

Accidentally deleted important files, system restore not working
I accidentally deleted some important files when trying to free up space on my laptop. Now, when I startup, it cannot go to my user. I lost my email settings, other functions. My docs are accessible by going to 'My Computer' then to drive C: then to the user, etc. However, from my Start menu, I can't get to them by simply clicking 'My Documents'.

I've tried to do some 'repairs' using Microsoft Knowledgebase but so far have been unsuccessful. I tried some of the suggested things and have made alist of many of the files that are missing when I tried to do a system repair. These files are not in the recovery section c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386. The list is here:

spider.exe
clipbrd.exe
hostmib.dll
staxmem.dll
admexs.dll
appconf.dll
iisadmin.dll
iisfecnv.dll
infocomm.dll

I ran HiJackThis and the results are below.

any ideas would be helpful.

Hello,
I will try to explain this as best as I can so if you need any more information please ask and I will gladly answer. If this is in the wrong forum I apologize. If it is please redirect me and I will post it there.

I have built 11 computers, all containing the EXACT same hardware and software. I install windows 7(64bit), all the drivers for each component, and activated the copy of windows. The pc will run completely fine running any program I ask it to. The problem does not happen until I reboot the computer, now this is not always on the first reboot. These computers could last a few days and then I reboot and it all breaks. When I randomly reboot the system it will boot up showing problems and asking for a system restore. So I do the system restore and reinstall a few drivers and the same problem will persist.
I eventually get fed up with the whole process and decide to completely reinstall Windows thinking maybe I could have done something wrong(been doing this for 15 years no problem but it happens). After a completely random(as far as I can tell) amount of time and reboots the system will do it again. I am completely stumped on this issue and could really use the help. I have managed to get 2 working for a few weeks now but they hard bent cpu pins from the factory and I straightened them out. The other ones I have checked and they are fine(so it seems).
The System is running an ASUS P8Z77-v PRO motherboard, EVGA Nvidia 650 TI graphics card, i7-3770 CPU(may be an... Read more

Hello to all,

A month back I accidentally deleted the wow6432 node from my registry under system_user. I believe this is the root of all my problems. Once I did that, my toshiba c885 D 64 bit would not boot. I forced the computer to shut down and pressed f12 to get to the system recovery options. I then restored to a point before my blunder. Well, my laptop worked for a while and then magically the screen goes black and will not reboot. I did sestem restore a few more times since I could get a little bit of work done in between restoring and the screen turning black again. After I was fed up with having to run system restore every other day, I decided to run system refresh to keep my files but reset everything else. After restoring I am getting the same problem and find myself again running system restore every other day just to keep working.

My questions are if I completely reinstall windows 8 and start from scratch, will this definitely solve the problem? I thought system refresh would have worked, so I'm not sure. Also, are there any other available options for me to fix my computer without starting from scratch?

Thanks so much in advance! -Aaron

A:System Restore and System Refresh not working completely!

Hi awrontherise,

Since you did not provide your specs, all my suggestions are just speculative in nature; however, I can tell you that a clean install will fix all system software corruption but if you also have hardware and/or driver issues they will have to be addressed separately. So, based on what you have told us so far, I would recommend this as your first step:

Repair Install Windows 8

Now, if the above doesn't work, you may have to take this route:

Clean Install - Windows 8

Good luck.

I have an issue that is somewhat related to this. I uninstalled Adobe Acrobat from my computer yesterday, and when it was finished it said I needed to restart my system for changes to take effect, so I did, and that is when things went sour for me. For some reason, Windows decided to have a corrupt ntfs file system after this, and required a check disk to be run to reboot. So, I let it finish, and got back to the desktop, and tried to run system restore, but it kept saying there was a problem with my file system and I needed to run a check disk again when I restarted the computer again. So, I restared, and it ran the check disk, and got back to the desktop. So, again I tried to run system restore, but now when I clicked it to run it nothing would happen, except that it would freeze up the start menu?? What is going on here please??

It's hard to diagnose the bootup problem -- but it sounds like it might be related to a buggered Windows update. Open the taskmanager (ctrl-alt-del) and see if "svchost.exe" is consuming excess resources.

If it is, run services.msc and locate the entry for Automatic Updates. Double click that and set the startup mode to disabled and reboot. If that resolves the problem you should probably follow the instructions here:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/549822-solved-svchost-exe-slow.html#post4544272

There is also a hotfix that may need to be applied:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891/

>> Problems with System Restore unfortunately usually require that the cache be purged and reset by turning off (disabling) System Restore, rebooting and then turning it back on. This would fix it for the future but of course would be of no help for this current problem.

Once his pc has booted up, the scroll bar changes from blue to white & nthe sound does not work, although when it boots up it works ok.
He has tried to do a System Restore & the following message appears.>

the system restore function on my vista/32 computer is not working. If I do a backup from the restore screen everything proceeds as normal and, upon completion I sometimes get the message "an error occurred" or maybe no message at all. When going back to restore from this point I get the message "an error occurred" and restore is not successful. This has only started happening over the last month or so. I have used the original installation disk to repair windows - but this has not cleared the problem. Thanks to all in advance

1. Disable AV and try restore
2. Delete all restore points and create one. Now try.

I cannot get my system to perform a successful restore using the System Restore feature of Windows XP SP2. It goes through the steps, reboots and gives me a message that the system cannot be restored to the checkpoint I selected. This happens regardless of the checkpoint I select. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Thanks ...

I think we had a discussion on this in the past where one of your restore points is bad and if one is bad, then all are bad. This may or may not be the case, but I am sure that a staff member in this area will be able to expound on it.

I tend to have problems with Firefox taking an unusually long time to load pages, and normally, I can solve that with using a System Restore. This time, though, I can't get System Restore to work. I've tried several times from various checkpoints, but each time I get a message saying "Incomplete Restoration."

I know this topic has been posted before, and I tried using the advice given in this thread http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/459314-system-restore-incomplete.html. I disabled AVG Anti-Virus, but I didn't help. I know from the previous thread that you'll need to look at the system restore logs in order to help; so, I'll just post those now to save time.

avgupd.exe.old is related to AVG.

You could try uninstalling AVG to see if System Restore comes back to life. Use the AVG Remover.

My System Restore will not create any restore points. Every attempt is met with the error "System Restore was unable to create a restore point. Please restart the computer and try again". The service is running, and I have turned Restore off, rebooted, then turned it back on to no avail. I cannot find any warnings in Event Viewer. I have even re-installed System Restore and run SFC to no avail. I have run different rootkit and anti-virus programs, but cannot find any of either. Does anyone else have any ideas?

I had similar trouble and my appeal for help resulted in LOTS of advice but nothing worked for me. (A search would find my original posting).

What did work for me was my installing the software Super AntiSpyware Free Edition and discovering by chance that there is a Repair section and listed is a repair of Windows System Restore.

I clicked on this and miraculously (!) my problem was solved.

I now have Super AntiSpyware Professional installed but my problem was solved with the Free Edition. Maybe worth a try?

I recently downloaded some drivers as I was trying to install a new printer who's software would'nt load. This did'nt solve the problem. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. I then thought I would use System restore to go back to a happier time when I had the first Brother printer. I actually used System restore about 4 times in one afternoon and now it won't let me restore any further back than the 28th. I thought if I could go back far enough the drivers I had downloaded would be dormant and save me trouble. I am a complete novice so if you can help me with this problem please post it in baby language, thanks in advance.

The other day i installed some buggy drivers for my sound card that left a redundant icon in the control panel, so I thought I'd do a system restore, the only point I could restore to was from about 2 months ago, it was better than nothing, so I tried to restore to it. After a long time i get some message about the shadow copy has timed out. I decided to try in safe mode, which worked. But still the same error message out of safe mode if I boot normal windows. I read on some site that I must make sure that the system restore service is running, I check in services, guess what... no system restore service. I'm not sure at all about what to do now...

A:System restore not working

Generally, you can just use the roll back functionality in Device Manager in Vista to restore a previous driver.

The service is not present in Vista. SR is handled by the volume shadow copy service (and others).

See if you can create a restore point. Go to Start > Search (or Run), and type:

systempropertiesprotection.exe

It was fine before i last reinstalled windows xp. I wanted to do a clean format which the computer couldn't do for some reason It would only let me overwrite the previous installation. Its letting me open system restore and make my own restore points + automatic ones. But after trying to restore, it just says it was unable to, with no details explaining why.

Came with Win 8.1 64bit

I have tried 2 times to do a system restore with 2 different points.
Once started system gets to screen saying system restore initializing, and it just stays at that point with circle spinning. I have to hold down power button to turn off and than restart back to desktop saying restore failed.
What could possibly be wrong?

A:system restore not working on Win 8.1

Hello, Johnf. Sorry to read your having problems.

I just restored mine yesterday. It does take quite a long time. I do remember the busy circle, but I can't for the life of me remember if it changed to a different screen after a while. that sequence took approximately 10 to 15 minutes. It eventually stated it was restarting, the screen went dark, and I could see it working again for approximately 5 minutes. It then booted again and worked again for another 5 minutes before I got a lock screen, then after hitting a key, a sign-in screen.

How long did yours run with the busy circle before you hard reset it? Also, I think it not to be a good idea to hard reset while it's in that mode, but obviously it rebooted to do it again.

I am not sure this is the right forum, but I thought I would start here.

I attempted to restore to a point I created last night. I received a message that the system could not be restored to that point. I also received a warning that my Avast AV 2015 Background Service was not running. The computer was running slow. I ran system restore again to undo the restore point and after the shutdown and restart I received another error message that the system could not be restore to the point I started from. I also received the same Avast warning. It appears the desktop has some icons from last night, as well as some from today.

I suspect the Avast AV may be causing a problem with the system restore, but I am not sure.

I ran sfc /scannow and it did not find any code integrity violations.

I could use some help on how to proceed. Thanks.

A:System Restore not working

Why don't you say what error message was displayed?
Shutdown AVAST or even better.... uninstall it, so it can't interfere in the process

I'm having a problem with System Restore working. I'm trying to restore back to a point, and after rebooting and logging in, the Restore gives me a message saying "Restoration Incomplete" and tells me that no changes were made. I don't know what to do anymore.
I found another thread that advised turning off Symantec security, but I use AVG, and chances are, it was on when the restore point was made. I'm new here so I'm not sure if this is the right place to post.
I use a Windows XP Home.
If any more information is needed (I'm not sure) just tell me.

A:System restore ..not working

The restore points could have become corrupt due to malware, or just an accident. You can try to purge (delete) all but your oldest restore points. You should only do this if you know for a fact that everything else about your computer is working fine and you are free from all malware. Now you should Set a New Restore Point The easiest and safest way to do this is:Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore. Then go to Start > Run and type: CleanmgrClick "OK".Click the "More Options" Tab.Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and now, whenever I try and do a system restore it says "System restore encountered a problem and has to close".

It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue.

I have been onto the Microsoft websites and they do not mention how to repair or reinstall system restore , does anyone out there know?

A:system restore not working?

First have you gone through the troubleshooting drill here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q302796

In particular determine you have enough available hard drive space and perhaps purge the System Restore archive and try manually creating a check point and restoring it?

What Windows version/Service Pack update do you have?

While there is an sr.inf "setup" file for System Restore, you may be prompted for locations to reinstall files from, and I'm not sure if you can reinstall it properly from the Service Pack files.

Hello there. i'm having some trouble with my computer. i came home from a two week trip to find my computer had the "antivirus 2009" virus on it and i think it may have had a couple others as well. what was happening at first was my computer would just restart itself. then when i typed something in google the links would redirect me to an ad search site or some random site. well eventually i fixed the redirect problem (can't remember how now). so i went around many different forums and eventually read about hijackthis. so when i tried to install hijackthis it wouldn't work...i would click install>run and nothing would happen. same with spybot search and destroy, i would install but when it would try to download something it would just stop working. When i tried System restore it said "windows cannot restore to this point please choose another restore point" none of them would work. i tried creating a new system restore point but it said "cannot create a system restore point please restart your computer and try again". thats when i read something about UnHackMe. i installed and ran that program which enabled me to install hijackthis. now i have hijackthis installed but dont know anything about registry keys. so if anyone can help i would appreciate it very much.

Not having the XP Install CD or and XP Upgrade CD makes repairing the SR programs harder. Have you tried running SFC /scannow to determine if there are corrupt files? If not you may want to try it. Also if you were not given the Install CD then the install Cab files should be on your system somewhere. Try doing a start\search\files and folders and type in *.*cab and look for any folders that have a designation of Win_XX.cab
XX being numbers.
If they exist then you have a place where you can extract new examples of any files found corrupt.
However if there is registry corruption the SFC command will not help us and a XP CD will have to be had. Do you know anyone who has one? If so it is perfectly legal to borrow this CD for the purpose of repairing your current legal installation. If you can locate one follow the Instuctions listed at the website.

Hello

My system restore fails every time I attempt it. This has happened the last 3 times I had a need to attempt restore. (Three attempts separated by months in time, about different issues.) This time, I am thinking something may be wrong with my system restore function.

In this case, it is simply a matter of trying to roll back a browser update.

I saw a whole list of available restore points, and I went to the second one back - from only a few days ago. The restore failed.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM from Gateway Laptop about 1.5 yrs old. I allow most updates.

Any Suggestions? Thanks.

A:System Restore Not Working

Solution:

The problem was caused by Norton NIS 2009.

The problem was resolved by the following steps:

Go into Settings - Miscellaneous Settings - Product
Security and turn off 'Norton Product Tamper Protection'.

Then System Restore worked.
