Offline File Sync Issues

Q: Offline File Sync Issues

We have a new employee that wants to use her laptop, which is fine. It is a Dell with XP pro. At her former job she was synchronizing her offline files with their Win 2003 server.

I have set it up to work on our network and to synchronize offline files with our Win 2003 server. All this is working great, but it still attempts to synchronize with the old server.

I looked on line and did not find any advice on how to make it forget the old server. Any thoughts? It is working at the moment, but really annoying.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

We have few laptops (windows 7 pro) for sales rep and Offline file enable to sync their documents which are on SBS 2011 server.
I don't know why it try to sync some other users (My video , My music , etc ) files and error says "access denied" or

“The Process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process”

we have tried many times and confirm there's no one using those files but still same error
I found this article on forumbut not sure how much this valid to SBS 2011, and if it's known issue why not there's fix patch yet from Microsoft

On the 2003 server I had to ADD this reg entry and set it to 0:
OplocksDisabled REG_DWORD 0 or 1
Default: 0 (not disabled)

And then Changed this entry to 1:

EnableOplocks REG_DWORD 0 or 1

Hello, I have a laptop with Windows 7 Pro OEM. I need to make a network drive available for the user when they are not on the domain. Here is what I've done so far and the issues I am comming across: (The files are on a Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition)I have setup a network drive and right clicked on it an set it to be made available offline.
Windows then starts to make the offline copies.
While in the process of making the files available offline, errors start to appear saying ?The Process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process? (This error Occurs for each file in the directory ? 4400+ files)
I have tried this multiple times with the user logged off and also checked the file server to ensure that any files are not open. But still the same error occurs.
This issue occurs most times when requesting a sync. It has occasionally worked correctly. ie. it made a copy of the files
After I have seen a successful sync I unplug the computer from the network and try to view the files.
Each file in the directory has a cross on the icon.
When opening any of the files I simply get a message saying that it cannot open the file.
I have turned off the Offline files and deleted all temp files and tried to setup the Offline files again twice now but still had the same problem.
I have found where the offline files are stored: C:\Windows\CSC\....
I have set the user to have full control permissions in this section but neither the Local ... Read more

Great News Everyone! I did the registry change and it WORKS! Just to outline MS's KB and what I had to do, follow these steps: On the 2003 server I had to ADD this reg entry and set it to 0:
OplocksDisabled REG_DWORD 0 or 1 Default: 0 (not disabled)
And then Changed this entry to 1:
EnableOplocks REG_DWORD 0 or 1 Default: 1 (enabled) You will NEED to restart the server and once that is done it should just work on the Windows 7 Machines, you may need to restart the W7 machines too.  Hopefully this works for anyone else having the same issue. Post your replies if this worked or not!

I have a user (my CFO) that uses the offline sync like everyone else in our company. However, when he's working on a document offline he needs to reboot before that file will sync to the server regardless of if he's online again or not. It does sync when the computer is shutting down, but not manually or automatically while he's online.

I've tried numerous ideas to try to get it to work. My next step would be to re-initialize the database and see if that fixes the problem, but I wanted to see if anyone here has any less destructive ideas before I try that.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi All,
I am using offline file & folder Sync option to my Document on Network drive It works fine as Windows automatically sync the offline files on which I work while I am away from the network or not connected. However when I create a new file
in offline mode and connect my laptop with network the file created in offline mode disappeared/deleted. I have gone through with blogs and dox to understand that Anytime you sync it update the file with the latest version on network folder. If it is
the case then how can I Sync the files I create when working offline ?

We have an issue where Offline Files is synchronising files in Shares B, C, D. We only want synchronisation to occur in Share A (Home). To date we have tried the following:

Reformatting the Offline Files database
Selecting the option to NOT cache on the share's properties on our File server.
Added Shares B, C, D to GPOM as destinations (drive letters) to not include in Offline Folders rule.
Added .pst extension to the GPOM as a file type to not include in Offline Folders rule.
Turned off the Slow Link option in GPOM.

Despite all of these settings being active there are files in B, C and D that are still being made available offline. After the database is reset and Sync Center is allowed to resync Share A, it automatically syncs the exact same files that we do not want.
So this must be stored in a list associated to a particular user somewhere but we have no idea where to find it, we have looked in AppData for multiple users but cannot find what we hope to see in terms of settings for Sync Center or Offline Files.
I should note that the files in Share B, C and D appear to have been accessed in the past where perhaps there once was a Slow Link detected, but now Sync Center is constantly including those files for any particular user. Example: I may have accessed files
1, 2 and 3 during a Slow Link being detected and they always now become available offline for me, user 2 accessed files 4, 5 and 6 and so those files for that user are now always being made available... Read more

Hi All,

At my work a colleague has purchased 3 x ASUS Transformer Books, each of which is loaded with Windows 10 Home edition.

I need to access a file share using each of these Ultrabooks and ideally perform a sync using the offline files feature.*

Does Home edition support connecting to a Domain based file share with the ability to sync data (offline) on the said share?

If this isn't possible what are my options for syncing domain based files with a Home edition of Windows?

Kind Regards,

I have a user who has a bunch of files that seem to delete themselves off of the server.

The user has a drive mapped to the server, and initially the "My Documents" folder was redirected to this network share (his home drive).

The redirection was based on group policy, but the user's computer has been moved from the "sync" OU to a "non-sync" OU, so he should not be syncronizing his files any longer.

He is not able to see his files on the server from multiple machines (which are all in the "non-sync" OU).

The files ARE on the server, so it's not like they are actually deleted. It's just that the user cannot see them. Also, he created a new file on the network share from another computer, and that file is still visible on the server from his machine.

Please let me know if there's anything that can be done so this user can access his files again!

Thank you!!!

A:Unwelcome Sync.pop Up Offline

Welcome to TSG, FLY90MPH.

To help you identify the source of the problem we need to have a thorough look at your "startup profile". Go to the site below, download Startuplog.zip, unzip and run Startuplog.com. Copy and paste the full contents of Startuplog.txt (not stubbpaths.txt) to your next reply.

And if you are not running an updated antivirus scanner, you should do an online scan here:

Since you say these pages are popping up offline, you should also go to Internet Options and delete both the Temporary Internet Cache and its Offline content.

I have set the workstation up so that when the user logs on and off the my documents synchronises back to the Main site. since there are more and more documents in this folder its becoming very slow. when the user clicks on my documents its taking around 15 seconds to open, i have checked all the dns and ip settings and its as it was originally when it was quick, is there a way to make the folder offline without terminating the VPN link so that they can work on it and then when they log off, it syncs back to the server.

I have a 2003 SBS server and several users all on Windows 7.

One of the users just got a new Sony laptop with Windows 7 Pro, his existing laptop was also Windows 7 Pro.

I am trying to make same file share available offline again and the files sync with no errors in sync center. But when the user goes offline all the files have a red X and the files are partially transparent.
All the KB's and threads I can find involved people getting access denied errors, but I'm getting no sync errors.

Any ideas?
I tried formatting the offline files database earlier and I made a dozen files available offline. No errors but again red x's when he went offline.

Just wondering if there are any suggestions regarding a sync problem I am having. Up till now, I have been able to do seamless sync between my laptop (Vista ultimate) and my desktop (vista home). Recently it has stopped working, except where I sync individual files.
e.g. if I create a file offline on the laptop, I get a sync error when I reconnect to the network. It says "assertion failure" in sync centre. Same happens when I select the folder and manually press sync. However, if I rightclick the file and press sync, it syncs fine. This happens even where this is the only file in the folder, which suggests that there is something different between folder permissions and file permissions. However, haven't made any changes to permissions etc. recently and all file permissions are inherited from the parent folder anyway.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Our users "my documents" folders are set up for redirection to \\ourserver\users

We have an XP based machine ( machine X ) that was used by person A, each time they logged off it synchronized as expected.

However machine X is now used by another user B.

Whenever user B logs off user A's offline files still keep synchronising, have deleted all the files from the offline folder I still cannot see a way of stopping user A's files and starting the new user B's files sync.

User A's files were accounting type files and are sensitive files that should not be viewed by others, however by still sync to the offline files folder they can be easily viewed.

Any thoughts as how I can stop this and re-direct the new users files to sync as I need to release this pc for general use.

A:Offline files / folder sync

You need to unmark the old users' folders for offline use, apply, reboot and make sure that the machine can see the domain and be made happy on that front, log in as the new user and then mark those new folders for offline use.

I believe I have searched the history of Sync Center issues enough that this is an issue that has not yet been addressed.  If so, please point me to the proper article.  Thanks! I was making folders available for offline use in my Win 7 Ultimate edition.  We are in the process of moving to NAS servers (with new network names) and I know syncing with NAS servers is not working correctly right now. So I have unchecked all the folders to make then unavailable for offline.  I have also gone to "Manage Offline Files" and tried deleting all offline files for the network drive.  However, there is one Network Drive that I cannot get to delete no matter what I try.  I have tried Deleting Offline Copy for the drive (which it says is successful), but the network drive and a folder hierarchy remain when I view Offline Files.  Also, when I view this folder path in Windows Explorer, it gives a status of "Offline Availability: Available".  I find this odd since the Make Available Offline box is not set for any of the files or folders in this path.  Also, this message seems odd to me since the only valid messages I have found for this status are "Always Available" or "Not Available". I have also tried making all of these files and folders available offline again and removed and deleted, but I still have the same problem.  I have also tried the registry key to reset the cache for offline files and tha... I can't seem to figure out this issue. Hopefully someone can. My boss uses three computers, all running Windows 7 SP1 Professional. Her My Docs are redirected to a server share, and copied locally for offline use, via Offline Files. She often tells me that she thinks she is missing files and folders at any given point, using any one of the three computers (there's no pattern).

Now, when I check any of these computers, I see the little red X over the Sync Center icon. I'll manually run a sync, yet it fails each time on several old files. I can verify the files are present on each computer and the server, but yet it seems the Sync process doesn't agree. It also halts the sync, so no further files are sent.

How can I fix this? First, why doesn't the sync continue after an error and on a single file? Why would she be getting errors on a file that exists and is identical? The error is always "the specified network name is no longer available". I can restart the sync and it will fail on two more random older files.

The server is question is a plan fiel server running Windows 2008 R2. She is using the very same domain account on all three systems, and has local admin rights to all three system.

Since user has been migrated to Vista Enterprise, offline files have not been functioning correctly. It appears to ONLY be that way for newly created files and folders. Sync log indicates that "the files are in use by another system."

All other users syncing to the same server are fine.

I've disabled Indexing, but that did not take care of it.
I've also googled the heck out of this. Nothing worked.

If I go to the actual server location and sync from there, it works without issue, but not the other way. There's a similar error for every created file or folder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've got a laptop user with a Windows 7x64 Pro. I've defined a folder on our 2008R2 file server for his use as the primary storage location (on the user's machine, I've mapped the network location to a drive) of his work files. I then went ahead and marked
that folder as 'Always available offline', and made sure that the first sync was completed. I've created a sync schedule through the Sync Center. Over time, the size grew to be around 20GB of small files (mostly documents and presentations).

The problem:
While running the sync, an error occurs: access is denied on one of the inner folders. It seems that once the error is encountered, the entire sync is halted!
The affected folder does not have explicit permissions (I've checked both locally and on the file server), and is inheriting the rest of the NTFS permissions from the root folder.
The folder can be accessed from the file explorer of the user's machine.
Moreover, when I enter the Properties of the folder, switching to the 'Offline Files' tab and click 'Sync Now...'' the sync continues as expected (!)
The question:
What is the expected behavior? Should the sync process stop once an error is encountered?
If so, what can be the cause of the 'Access Denied' ?

It reads as though it does:

The Windows 7 Offline Files feature allows you to keep on your computer, copies of files normally stored on the network. When you select a network file or folder to make available offline, Windows automatically creates a copy of that file or folder on your computer.
Anytime you reconnect to that network folder, Windows syncs the files with those in the network folder. You can also sync them manually at any time.

So my question is: If you put the exact same files on two network computers with Offline Files turned on, will they sync when you open a file? Or does one have to be a file server for it to work?

A:Does Offline Files sync between network computers?

Hello Greg,

In this case with 3 networked computers, the two separate network computers (ex: A & B) would only sync with the source network computer (ex: C) of the offline files, and not each other directly. They (A & B) would evently be synced though since the are both syncing with C.

So, this is what I'm trying to do.

I have a laptop that I mostly use, it's running Windows 7. I'm trying to set up my iPod so it will connect to it instead of my desktop which is what it currently does, but all of my Music is on an external hard drive that is connected to the desktop.

I just got a new router, a Belkin Work & Play 600. It comes with a USB port on the back to connect external hard drives to . So I decided to, instead of having to plug my external hard drive into the laptop every time I wanted to access my music, I would hook up the hard drive up to the router and then make the files be available offline on my hard drive. (This way my girlfriend could also access the music from her laptop)

The only problem is that I can't get the files to be available offline. I tried to right click on them and say "always available offline", when I did this sync center would open and try to sync them, but every single file would cause a sync error because "The process could not be completed because the file was in use by another process". I cannot for the life of me figure out how to fix this, so I need help.

If you need more information I will for sure be willing to answer any questions.

We have have setup offline files in our network by configuring the appropriate GPO's.
When a user logs onto a freshly installed windows 7 SP1 workstation the sync partnership is present.
When that users logs off and then another user logs on, there is no sync partnership present for that other user.

A:No sync partnership for second user that logs onto Windows 7 SP1 workstation - Offline Files

The permissions on both the server as well as the client side are correct.
In the mean time i have found a solution for this problem.
It appears that if the first user logs on and simply sets its homedirectory offline, then logoff and login as another use, that other user cannot get to his/her home directory.
If you then login as the first user again en simply switch it's homedirectory to online, then logoff and login as the other user the homedirectory of that user can be reached again.
Apparently offline files works like this: It takes the the whole \\servername\home$ and puts it offline as a whole, including every folder that is underneath the home$ share, which includes every homedirectory of every user.
This also made me solve the problem. If i simply make the home directory of each user a share and configure offline files to use \\servername\%username%$, there is no problem. Apparently only "\\server\share1" is treated as an independent item
that allows it to be switched offline/online without causing another "\\server\share2" path to be switched to offline/online.
Can you please confirm that my finding are correct?

I have been scratching my head for a couple of days with this one and I have still not resolved it.  We are using folder redirection (deployed via group policy) for my documents, pictures and favorites.  The problem I have on my computer is that
even though the event viewer for my computer suggests it has all redirected correctly with event id 501 "Successfully applied policy and redirected folder <foldername> to <UNCPATH>".  I have tried deleting my user profile and letting
it re-create itself.  Moved my home drive onto another 2008 R2 file server.  Confirmed that the permissions are based on the following MS article;
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2512089 .  Tried clean-booting the OS, but still no icon in the taskbar or partnership listed in sync center, even though I can work offline/online with the explorer
buttons.  I can confirm that the offline files is working in the background as when I work in offline mode, then create a directory/file locally and then reconnect, I can see the data move to the server.
What is going on?  I am at the stage of completely ditching my machine!

A:Windows 7 Sync Center Taskbar Icon disappeared & no offline files partnership also

I have re-built my computer as I could not live with this issue any longer.  On rebuild it all works as it should, so I do not understand what happened.  Obviously, offline-files still has operational issues that cant be explained, and although
you can turn on verbose logging in event viewer, it is still a technology that still has some way to go in terms of further development.  There is not a real alternative to offline-files, so we will have to make do for the moment.  Don't get me wrong,
it is a step in the right direction from the old XP days, but I think it needs to be improved so that troubleshooting can be made a little easier when things do go wrong.

I am having an issue with offline files created offline syncing back to the server. I have set up a network share to be available offline on a client computer. All files are available offline without issue. Here is the issue however. If I set the folder to work offline any file I create in the folder when it is offline just disappears when the folder comes back online, there are no conflicts or sync failures reported in sync center. If I create a new folder offline the folder does sync back to the server. Any changes made to an existing file are also replicated back to the server once the share is back online. So the issue is only with newly created files when the share is offline. I have not been able to replicate this error on any other file server in our environment, However I have recreated the issue with multiple shares with multiple Win 7 clients on this file server.

Steps taken so far.

Checked and reset permission levels on the share.
Recreated new shares from scratch for testing.
Disabled and enabled offline files on the client computer and cleared the offline cache.
Check various registry entry settings.
Disabled cashing on the File server.
Tested with XP the issue does not exist with XP.

I have spent hours researching this error online to no avail.

The clients are running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit
The File server is Server 2003 Standard 32 bit with SP2

Any help or ideas would be most welcome.

Folder si offline but when I add new file the file is synced to server within 10 or 20 minutes. I've checked last sync interval but it didn't change. It isn't same as time when file was uploaded to server. Last sync was eq. 16:00 but file was uploaded at
Folder is still offline. How is it possible?
THank you.

Because I didn't think so, but now it seems maybe they do:

Windows 8.1 .bat file glitched

The only thing I can think of is that this person was using an MS account and had Synced his Settings including File Associations, so that when he did a Fresh Install of Windows 8, and logged in with the MS account, it ruined his File Association. We've tried everything to set the association to default, but maybe the OS is resetting it to what it was when it was Synced.

Anyone concur? Because I never thought File Associations were being synced, if this is the case it would explain a few unsolvable problems that have cropped up lately.

A:Does "Sync Your Settings" also Sync File Associations?

Hello Jon,

Nope. File associations are not synced. At least not on any of my systems.

I am having trouble linking my hotmail account with Outlook 2007.
It was working last week just fine but I deleted my profile and all the .pst and .ost files in the c:\outlook folder because I wanted to start outlook from scratch and reconfigure all my email accounts in outlook. I did back up all the .pst and .ost files on a thumb drive before I deleted from my HDD. I even uninstalled and deleted outlook connector.
I reinstalled outlook connector today and went through the steps of adding my hotmail account. After I click finish a new folder pops up in the left pane with my email account but when I click on it, it reads "the set of folders cannot be opened. the file hotmail.ost is not an offline folder file."
I have tried deleting my profile and the .ost files, and I bought advanced exchange recovery but that failed to fix it. I have spent the past 3 hours trying to figure this out with no luck. I moved the old hotmail.ost file that I saved back into the outlook folder but that didnt help either.
Any suggestions?

I currently have offline files configured at my office and i'm running into some problems. First of all, I get the "You are working offline" message on a regular basis. It happens maybe 2-3 times per hour. About half the time when I go to my network shares(even shares that aren't configured for offline files) there are no files there. I have to right click > synchronize on the little file sync icon in the task bar and then all of the files magically appear. Does anyone know what's going on? This happens for all users on a regular basis. Please help.

I don't use IE (Firefox instead) but this has been bugging me for a while since sometimes IE is useful.

Whenever I open IE, I get a message that says "No connection to the internet is currently available. To view Internet content that has been saved on your computer click Work Offline. Click Try Again to attempt to connect." My comp is always connected to the internet. Firefox, Yahoo IM, and AOL work fine; but IE refuses to ever detect a connection. If I click "Try again" it connects just fine. What is that about?

I had a trojan and some other malware a little bit back and your helpful techs helped me remove them. So I am clear in that aspect. They told me to go here after they got me clear and I am just getting around to it.

Correction: Yahoo IM is not working as it should. It keeps disconnecting every few hours. Not sure why. Started happening after the trojan/malware was removed.

Also, before the whole trojan/malware deal, whenever I got email, a Yahoo IM feature alerted me to the new message. That alert still shows up, but before I could double click that icon and a Firefox window would open up and take me to my Yahoo mail inbox. Now when I double click it, the icon goes away but no Firefox window opens.

Let me know what other info you need.

Hello all,
So my company uses OneNote for many things. We have a user that has it one his desktop computer and his iPad. I'm not sure how long it hasn't been working correctly for him but he says that it's not syncing at all for him anymore. I took a look at it to see if I could figure it out. His desktop seems fine, however, his iPad reveals a message on the top in a yellow bar underneath the toolbars: "Merge Conflict - We couldn't merge some changes. To review conflicts, use OneNote on your computer or OneNote online."
I had him sign out of OneNote on his desktop and on his iPad and log back in (both, to ensure he is using the same account for both, and to see if that fixes the issue). It didn't work.
He is using Office 2016. If you need more information, let me know.

I can't get my iPhone to properly sync with iTunes under Windows 7 RC 7127.

The iPhone is recognized by the system and its recognized by iTunes, but when I click on sync it starts with iPhone backup first and it gets about 3/4 of the way and just sits there. I can then cancel the sync on the iPhone and try again and get the same problem. So because it never backs up, it never syncs.

I had similar issues with Windows 7 RC 7100 and after I restarted the computer it worked. But with 7127 I can't get it to work at all.

Anyone else have any issues?

Not here...my iPhone 3G syncs fine with 7127 and now 7137. My only gripe is that it will not open iTunes and sync automatically when I plug the phone in...it used to in Vista...but not too much of a hassle to do it manually I guess.

I can't seem to get my profile to reliably sync to new devices or when I've tried clean installs on my main system. I have all settings checked to sync and the PCs are all trusted devices. Sometimes it will sync the desktop background and my profile picture, others it may sync some of my explorer settings. Sometimes it may not sync anything at all. My homegroup on any other devices also gets renamed to "winliveid_000" instead of the usual "[email protected]" I've yet to figure out why this happens as well. I've tried deleting the data and trying again, all with the same result. This has honestly all been an issue ever since I've installed Windows 8 and I'm starting to dislike the profile sync altogether. If it cannot reliably sync my data and all of it, I don't understand it's usefulness. I've also run the account troubleshooting tool, which gives a cryptic message saying "The following settings are turning sync off: Personalization." It gives no further details that I can see or look into and all settings are on. Any ideas as to what is happening? I've taken a look at Windows 8.1 and it seems that you have no choice but to initially use your Microsoft account to sign in, which is troubling. If it cannot be fixed, I may have to delete my synced profile online every time I try to reinstall my main system

A:Account sync issues

How many systems have you linked to your account, and how many of those are giving you this problem? I originally had three PCs connected to my account, and I've never had any problems at all. Are you starting with a Local account and then adding the MS account? What will happen is, if you add an MS account to a new system, your entire network of computers will take on the characteristics of the newest system.

I found this out, after I installed onto my 3rd PC and I wanted a different Desktop Theme. I went back to my other 8 systems, and THEY were all using that theme.

So, on all computers I share everything except for the theme. So if you set up to a new PC, you whole network of PCs will look exactly like the very last one you installed it on, unless you turn off sync for the existing PCs which is what I had to do until I had all three set up how I wanted.

Hi there,
I recently upgraded my Outlook to 365 due to buying a domain, which is being hosted by GoDaddy. By upgrading it then deleted another email account which is being hosted by Hostica. I've tried numerous times to reload the Hostica profile back into Outlook365 but it refuses to connect to the server. I have deleted all profiles and now when I set up a new profile Outlook goes into "Not Responding" mode. Please help!

Since installing Windows 8, I've noticed that iPhone is not showing up on the devices list in iTunes.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it just a matter of waiting for Apple to update drivers? Or is there a trick to get this working now?

Good morning everyone,

the following happens at a gas station, where the hour shown on the surveillance camera's
don' t correlate with the hour shown on the back-office computer' s event manager.
There are 3 minutes of difference between both. In my logic, we should be able to sync
the time on both units but we are being told this is not possible. Any opinions/ suggestions here?

Hello, I have two p53 laptops.  Windows 10 pro, latest OS version.  We have a home directory on the network.  The p53 will not sync or make available the entire folder.  It won't make offline certain folders that other lenovo laptops are handling fine.  Is there something on the p53 that will cause offline folders to hang or not sync?  Because I find it interesting it is only happening on the two p53's I have and not the carbon, yoga, p1, or other vendors laptops. Thanks Richard

hi i have recently had a problem with the voice sync being out when i recode video with nero, it does not happen with all video formats i choose to re-code but nor does it happen to specific types. for example i have recoded avi files with no voice sync issues and i have recoded other avi files and the sync can be out by upto 6 seconds. i am at my wits end, please can someone suggest some sort of solution.

p.s. i am using nero specifically because i need to create a menu at the start of the disc, so using winavi for instance would not be a viable alternative

Thanx in advance
