the case of the giant taskbar

Q: the case of the giant taskbar

I just installed WIN XP on a virgin harddrive. I don't like icons on my desktop so I like to use quick launch for recycle bin. my ISP and Internet Explorer. When I checked quick launch my taskbar grew to double its size. No matter how I moved or squashed it, it was either gone or double, but never the normal size. As soon as I uncheck quick launch I can compress the taskbar back to normal. Ideas and fixes welcomed.

Preferred Solution: the case of the giant taskbar

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: the case of the giant taskbar

Have you got large icons selected for the quick launch taskbar?

To check, unlock the taskbar, then right-click on the quick-launch bar, and from the popup menu choose view, then large or small icons. Small icons will return the taskbar to normal size if this is what the problem is.

Hi all,

I started a new thread as suggested in the other discussion.

I picked up a new HP laptop the other day and the icons in the context menu are giant. I remember HP installed a start menu program or something similar when I first booted up.

But as usual with all non MS Signature PCs, I did a crapware/bloatware cleanup. Deleted every single HP installed program until it's a clean state. (The reason I didn't do a fresh install is because of the beats theme....).

I removed that start menu program but the icons are still giant.
It seems like the system icons are affected but program-specific icons aren't. e.g. Chrome's icons for webpages aren't affected. But pin to taskbar and close window are.

Any suggestions?

Can you get the taskbar to reapear if you hit the start key on your keyboard? Try toggeling into differnet views with explorer, full screen, hide taskbar, unhide taskbar. I have had similar problems also.

i have recently bought TV Giant as i fancied a change from the regular type of games i usually play and this caught my eye. installation was fine and quick. the game then started up, got past all the manufacturer screens and got on to what looked like the loading screen, all five icons would light up to say that this has loaded then it would just shut off and go back to my desktop.

i am running vista so i thought whether it was that stupid problem where you have to run some programs as administrator, tried this and same thing happened, the weird thing was that no error message popped up detailing what happened, just a dialog box with looking for solution and then the end program screen. i checked in the problems page of control panel and looked at what the problem was. this was what it came up with:

Recently my computer has started displaying giant pixels anytime I want to start up a computer game like The Sims or Trickster. For a while I thought it was just 3-d games that were not working but then I tried playing a 2-d pixel game, and I had the same problom, here is a screen cap of what I am talking about.

The computer that I am running is a eMachines T3256.
It has a nvidia GeForce 4 MX graphics card.
Is there anyways that I could fix this with buying a nother card, or downloading something, or will I have to take my computer in to someone to fix it?

A:Giant pixels, I need help

Re The Sims (original?) - your card should be able to play that

Re Trickster - your card doesn't support DX8 for 1.1 pixel shaders so probably cannot play that

Re the pixel problem - uninstall your present nVidia dtrivers in Add/Remove programs, reboot, and install the latest drivers.

edit: if the l;atest drivers don't fix it, uninstall them and try one of the 53.xx series - they apparently could, with hardware assisted software emulation, support vertex shader model 1.1.

A:giant images

Hi carol, you would need to reduce the image size in a graphics program, like Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro. Adobe Photoshop is rather expensive, but Photoshop Elements and Paint Shop Pro are arouns $100. There are free image editors out there, I just don't know the names of them, try going to http://www.download.com and look under the graphics section and there should be some editors there you could either download for free or atleast get a free trial to see if you like them. Hope I have helped.

I think what I did is change the theme to classic, and then back to vista, and it gave me this rounded box as a close button. I was just wondering if there was any way to put it back the way it was. Here is a picture

A:Giant Close button

Hello WeirdFrog, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I'm not sure of what you mean. That is the normal close button in Vista for non classic themes.

You might see if adjusting the size of the Caption Buttons item in the Advanced Appearance settings (step 6) to a large size may help. It will increase the size of the close button.

Hope this helps,

I was super excited to see the 4th Gen X1 Yoga released, but so dissapointed when I looked at the pictures. That giant bottom bezel. What is going on here? Who in their right mind released that in the year 2019?All the other manufacturers seem to be slowly cottoning on what the market wants (hint: not 16:9), yet here we seem to be stuck with completely wasted real estate on the laptops. It just makes no sense, the market is all about trying to get bigger screens in a smaller device. The easiest way to do that is to put a 14" 16:10/3:2 screen in a 12.5" body. Does Lenovo have any official word on this? They have so many unnecessary overlapping models, yet not a single offering that has what we all want. The XPS13 2-in-1 with the 16:10 screen is going to decimate sales.I've stayed true to my 8 year old X220 which is still going strong, yet unless something gets announced by Lenovo by end of July, it's bye bye lenovo from me.

Beth

A:Rebate informer/giant

I don't think rebate informer/rebate giant qualifies as a virus. It looks as though it installs an Inbox.com toolbar and some desktop shortcuts. Uninstall the applications, and the toolbar, and delete the shortcuts if they are left behind.

There are no files in the registry, but there are references to files. Be mindful of travels in the registry.

PC giant warns of hardware trojan.

Computer maker Dell is warning that some of its server motherboards have been delivered to customers carrying an unwanted extra: computer malware. It could be confirmation that the "hardware trojans" long posited by some security experts are indeed a real threat.

News that Dell may have a hardware trojan problem emerged on a support forum after a user was warned by a Dell call centre that the firm's PowerEdge R410 server motherboard contains spyware of unspecified function that a Dell engineer needed to come and remove.

Dell confirms on the same forum: "The potential issue involves a small number of PowerEdge server motherboards sent out through service dispatches that may contain malware. This malware code has been detected on the embedded server management firmware."Click to expand...

I've had my P4 1.7Ghz 256, PC800RD RAM, 64MB GeForce3, 80Gig HD computer for about a year now. Through the year the computer has worked absolutely perfectly. Great speed and performance...

Recently I installed SimCity4 which I discovered to be a game that takes up a lot of rescources... Not a big deal, I thought.. and even though I could hear my system working a lot while playing the game, everything seemed fine when I wasn't playing. The only strange to happen was one time it took almost 15 minutes to save a city I was building and the computer seemed like it was REALLY working hard to process the information

Then I decided to update my Norton Anti-Virus. I uninstalled 2002 and installed 2003. Here begins my own personal hell.

After upgrading Norton Anti-Virus I started noticing the computer lagging. I'd click the start button and the menu wouldn't pop up for 2 or 3 seconds. the Mouse curser would get jerky. and even closing programs and folders became delayed. Also, now after a while the H.D.D. light on the computer's tower will suddenly stay on until I shut down the computer and restart it. This even happens when I have no apps running. I've checked the task manager in XP and the performance tab shows a normal amount of CPU usage, there's no suspicious processes hogging up memory. And yet at times I also hear a sound that sounds like the computer is about to power down for a split second but recovers (kind of like a power skip sound)

Hello,

As you might've read from the title, English isn't my primary language but I'll try to describe it as best I can. I tried looking in the forum archives but had no luck.

I have a large collection of awesome images (photo's, concept art, ...), and while the image in it's entirety is amazing, sometimes I'd love to select a smaller portion of the image and put that as my wallpaper, and I don't think that's possible with Win7. I hope I described it well because I couldn't find the right words to condense it in the thread title. In other words, I'd love to have the ability to select a small portion of a much bigger image (10kpx file) so that this will fill an entire screen. Can anybody help me out?

Thanks in advance!

A:How to select wallpaper with giant images

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
If you upload the image we/ someone can crop and resize the image as needed,
All we need to two basic items,
1 The image
2 The resolution of your monitor = 1600px width x 900px height "as an example"

Or you can do this all yourself using a multitude of freeware like GIMP/ Paint.net/Chasy's Draw/...
Pick your poison

I also noticed today that when I attempted to open the ATI CATALYST(R) Control Center, there was an error message. The message was: "Could not load file or assembly 'CLI.Implementation' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.".

Are these two issues related? Another (possibly) related problem I'm having is that my multiple monitor capability has disappeared. My [right click>properties>setting>advanced>monitor] leads to this screen:

Previously, I was able to toggle between different displays, etc.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

At some point a few months after I got my Sony VAIO the desktop icons became huge. It doesn't appear to affect working of the computer. However it gets pretty crowded with only two or three short cuts. It looks all kind of wrong.

I have looked for other advice. I have tried the screen resolution etc etc so I am all out of answers. Any help would be fantastic.

Hi KaneBridge
What you need to do is change the icon size from large to small just right click on the desktop view and small icons.

Hello Technonuts,

Nice name. Seems like this is an issue with your screen resolution:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...isplay_change_screen_resolution.mspx?mfr=true

The above article should help fix this issue. However, you just go to the control panel and you will find the "display" icon there. Inside there you can change the resolution.

This suddenly happened last night, the video player on youtube is now almost twice as big, it looks awful on my small laptop screen and eats up a lot of cpu when playing. I can't change it back, and can't find anyone with a similar issue. I've tried deleting cookies, making sure i'm not zoomed in on the page, running firefox in safe mode, nothing.
I've contacted both firefox and youtube support, but haven't gotten any answers. Attatching pics of what it looked like before and what it's doing now
Not sure if it's just a weird coincidence or what, but it also happened right after avast updated? not sure how that would factor in.

A:Why is youtubes video player suddenly giant?

OK do you see the rectangle next to the full screen button on the bottom right try pressing that it might work

I recently purchased a Giant III cooler for my RADEON 9800 PRO 256MB card, my old fan shedded its blades lol.... Anyways, I was wondering if anyone else has this same card. The 128MB version does not have the heatsinks on the SDRAM, and I was wondering if that would make it hard to fit on my card, since there are 8 chips on each side of the card. The cooler comes with ram sinks as well, but I think those are for the front only, so I don't know if the backside of the cooler will clear the heatsinks on the SDRAM.

If anyone has got this cooler on this card, please let me know for any difficulties and performance of the cooler.

Win7 SP1
My System Volume folder is gigantic right now, almost 10GB.

I thought I could decrease that by deleting some older restore points with CrapCleaner.

When I looked at the SR points in CC, there is only one there, the most receont one, created today.

Is that possible---one restore point ten GB in size?

Or---has something gone wrong? If so, any way to fix it?

Anyone have an idea what could be going wrong with that--a 10 GB SV folder with only one restore point in it?

Of course, one solution would be to turn off system restore, so that everything in that folder is deleted, then start it again. However, if something goes wrong with the computer, that SR point could be a lifesaver, necessary to restore the system.

--------------
One other question--can the contents of the SVI folder be copied to an external HDD for backup (I have taken ownership of the folder, and given myself full permission on it and subfolders), before turning SR off and on? Then if necessary to use that saved SR point, copy those contents back to the SVI folder of the original drive?

A:Giant System Volume Information Folder

Well, you can actually start system restore and then click "Choose a different restore point" to display the other available points, see this tut.

System Restore

You can also a 3rd party tool like QRM Plus manager to take a look at the points.

How To Delete Individual Restore Points In Windows 7

Its possible the previous restore points got deleted for some reason or theres insufficient space allotted to them. You can set that space this way.
