Preferred Solution: i want to disable "other user" option on logon screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,
We have strange problem with our one Windows 7 Pro machine. We have few users, that have set option (Logon to) to login on specified computers - for example pc1 and pc2.
These users are accessing these PC's via RDP. The problem is, that on "pc2" machine, none of users can't login via RDP to it. They can login locally, but not via RDP (they have all permissions to logon via RDP). "pc1" is working flawlessly
(users can login both locally and via RDP).

The funniest thing about it is that, when users have "logon to" option set to "pc1" and "pc2" - they
can't access "pc2".
BUT... if we set "Logon to" option to "All computers" - they can easilly access it.

May I know is it possible to show domain user's "Display Name" instead of "User Logon Name" as owner in print queue? Our company's domain using generic "User Logon Name", i.e. 001, 002, 003 and so on, each "User Logon Name" will have personalized "Display Name", e.g. Mary, John etc., but a problem is when a print job printed by a user is hold in the print queue of a network printer, other users won't know who is it (the owner of the print job may shown as 001, 002 etc.) and so not able to ask that user to remove the print job. Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

First my screen resolution is 1920x1200

The logon screen is this same resolution, thus the User Account Picture on Logon Screen size looks about 1 inch squared

Is there anyway to change this to make it larger

Note: I'm talking about the User Account Picture not the logon screen

If you're the only person that uses that pc, set a password and it will help make your pc more secure, plus you will have a bigger user account picture.

There is never any reason specified for why I am being asked to re-enter my user credentials.
This is extremely annoying. How can I troubleshoot this if Windows does not tell me why?

I've set up a secondary account on my Windows 7 machine and I need to find out how to disable the switch user thing.

In Windows XP, I could hit winflag+L and switch user as I would instantly be taken to the user list.

In Windows 7, for some reason they had to complicate everything. When I hit winflag+L it just displays a picture of my account and a "Switch User" button, which for me serves no purpose what so ever.

Is there any way I can regain Windows XP's user switch functionality in Windows 7, where winflag+L takes me directly to the user list on the login screen?
Thanks in advance

200+ Windows 7 Pro machines, similar configuration, 1/4 of them x86, 3/4 x64.
Encountered 6 such machines having this problem: After a restart, user logon stuck at a black screen. In Windows event application log there is an event 'The Windows logon process has failed to spawn a user application'. This application is an in-house developed
application and is called at winlogon\userinit registry key.
A restart into Safe Mode, first logon will experience an auto-restart, then second logon ok. Subsequent logon into normal Windows is ok.

Setting the group policy setting to User Account Control: Behaviour in Admin Approval Mode to 'Elevated without prompt' doesn't solve the problem.

All machines are in workgroup.
There seems to be a relationship between security hardening (through local security policy) and this behaviour but not conclusive because some of the machines encountering the problem had not been hardened.
When I booted a machine under MS DART and change the userinit registry key to call userinit.exe instead of the in-house application, subsequent user can logon correctly under normal mode. Then changing it back to call the in-house application will again
logon into black screen.
Based on these observations, can anyone share what Windows does during Safe Mode to recovery such problem? under what circumstances does it auto-restart after a logon? Can local GPO enforcement corrupt the default user profile?

Something happened today and I can no longer access my regular "user" account.

There are five "users" showing in the MMC program in Windows 7 and only one is working. The problem with this is that it does not contain any of the information and links that I use daily.

The accounts are as follows;

Administrator (disabled)
D (not disabled)
DCM (disabled)
Guest (disabled)
Homegroupuser$ (not disabled)

I cannot remove the "disabled" status or rename any of these users. An error pops up saying "access denied".

Is there some way to do this that I have not found?

I tried "googleing" this but did nothave any luck.

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and am unable to get to the Windows Desktop. On-board is Windows Vista, I tried almost all the options through the Safe-boot screen (F8). I resorted to downloading Easy Recovery Essentials for Windows from SystemDiscs.com - this allowed me to access the drive, but not to repair it. I have also tried Windows Defender Offline tool to no avail.

As things stand now, the laptop boots to the point where 'Other User' logon screen is displayed, and no password on Earth will let you in. Also, no matter how many times F8 is hit, the safe boot screen does not show.

I have managed to copy all personal info off the drive, but am unwilling to accept that the only solution is to buy a new hard drive. What about the Windows
platform? Do I have to purchase a new copy of that as well? Why not just take the cop-out solution of buying a new laptop? Is there anyone out there willing to put their knowledge & experience on the table? Sorry to sound crabby - any help would be greatly appreciated. Just an honest effort to try is all I'm asking. Thank-you very much in advance.

The problem we are seeing is with some screen locked laptops placed in a docking station.  Our security policy has the machine locking after 'x' minutes of inactivity and when they try to unlock the machine they are met with the error:
Logon failure: user account restriction.
Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced.
Should they undock then they can log into the laptop without the error, then re-dock and resume normal operations.
Not an ideal solution, but at least a work around.
This does not occur with all laptops, and have never had it occur on a desktop.  I am struggling to find an
answer to why this is occurring.
I have tried the following things that Google says worked for others, but none have provided a solution:
- ?Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only?
 set in Group Policy
- reset local administrator account password
- ensure both user and computer AD account is not set for logon hours restrictions
If anyone has a suggestion or solution that worked for them then I would greatly appreciate if you could share

I'm working on a computer that appears to have gone through the "Windows Recover" virus/malware. The user appeared to do a good job of removing the virus and used System Restore to dial the system back about a week (which unfortunately is the furthest back the restore points go for some reason). Everything seemed to work except for the main users account, which had it's profile locations changed to something like c:\users\TEMP.username-PC.000. It was pointing to this directory instead of the original directory. I then opened up regedit and found the entries at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders all pointing to the wrong folder, so I manually edited every entry to point to the correct folder and restarted.

This ended up working against me. When I logged into the account none of the shell folder shortcuts in the start menu would do anything when you clicked on them. The menu would stay up and it was as if I was clicking on nothing at all; no response.

Instead of reversing the edits I had just made manually I decided to try using System Restore to revert the system back to the earliest date, which the owner of the PC said they had done themselves before I got there. I figured the worst that could happen would be it would be just as it was when I first looked at it.

After performing system restore I can only log into the Administrator account. Every other account on the system produced the error message "... Read more

A:"The User Profile Service failed the logon" on a fresh, newly created account

It's probably a typing error but I think you are referring to the Windows Recovery fake computer analysis and optimization program. The owner of the PC only used a restore point that took the machine back one week, which by the sound of it, was not succesfull. System Restore cannot be relied on to remove a virus infection as the restore point may have the infection saved in it. Also, once a system is comprimised by an infection it opens the door for other infections to get into the system.

Only a few helpers with the appropriate permissions can give advice on Malware removal outside of the Malware forum so in order to have the system cleaned of the infection you should open a new thread in the Malware forum.

The other option is to do a full reformat and clean install of the OS.

I have three Windows 7 systems and two XP systems presently on the network, all with full updates. One of the XP systems named "Shop" is inaccessible from any other system. Also Shop cannot access other systems even though it has good internet access through the same network.

I get "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password" error when attempting to log in from any remote system.

All computers are on the same router and workgroup. All computers have good access to the internet through the same router. All computers have the same user log-on names and same passwords for those names. All firewalls are turned off. None of the computers are wireless. I can successfully ping the problem system from any other system.

I've tried both enabling and disabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP (currently enabled). I've added IRPStackSize to the registry and then increased it in increments of 10 all the way up to 40 (currently set back down to 16) and all that does is change the error from the one in the title of this post to a box that says "Windows cannot access \\Shop, error code 0x80070035, The network path was not found."

I've attempted no configuration changes on other machines as they all communicate well including the other XP system.

I recently installed Examsoft on my computer (a program to take exams in law school). After I installed it and rebooted my computer, some weird things happened. When I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del, the only option available was "Switch User" and all the other ones were gone (Lock this computer, Start task manager, etc.). I eventually downloaded the registry keys that were needed to get back all the other options. The options to restart, shut down, hibernate, and sleep were also missing whe I clicked on the arrow on the start menu. I also downloaded the registry key to get those back.

However, the problem that still remains is that when I open User Accounts in control panel, the option to change the user picture is gone and on the start menu the box that is supposed to contain the picture above my username is blank. Also under user accounts, the "Manage your file encryption certificates" option is also gone. Does anyone know how I can get these options back? Thanks.

The "Idle-time Full System Scan" in Norton 360 v4 is bogging down my computer constantly, and there is no option to turn it off in "Automatic Tasks".

I contacted Norton and (after several attempts to find someone at Norton who could understand what I just said above and getting "hung-up" on over Norton chat. Inexcusable!!!) I was able to get a hold of a technician who told me that Norton intentionally removed this option "for security reasons, because they didn't want people turning it off".

The problem is, people will then be forced to turn it off by turning off ALL scheduled tasks (under "Settings/Scheduling/Schedule:Manual Schedule") and that is an even worse security problem than the relatively small one that would be created by turning off idle-time full system scanning.

Once the system has completed a full system scan, all files are on-access scanned anyway, so running a full system scan every 3-4 days is rather silly and extremely annoying--especially, because it will continue to try to run every time the system is idle if you cancel it.

A warning urging the user to not turn off idle-time full system scans without fully understanding the risks, and after explaining the risks, would be VERY preferable. Or at least the option to run the full system scans when the system is idle on a certain day of the month/week! The schedule for idle-time full system scans really needs to be separate from other tasks. In fact, t... Read more

However, when I try and load my indexing options to rebuild the index it will sit there and say "Waiting to receive indexing status". If I click the "Advanced" button it will freeze... I also receive an icon and loading display problem SEE PIC#1. Also when I click on "My Computer" it sometimes will sit there searching and it won't load. SEE PIC#2

I have tried the following:
1. Restarting the "Windows Search" service multiple times at different boots.
2. Deleting the files contained in the folder "C:\Windows\System32\config\TxR\". http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2484025
3. Stopping the "Windows Search" service then I opened up "regedit". I went to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSearch, SetupCompletedSuccessfully" I changed the value from a 0 to a 1. Then I rebooted my PC. I then went back to the same key and changed it back to a 0 and rebooted my PC again.
4. Turning the "indexing service" on and off from the "Turn Windows Features on or off" menu.
5. Microsoft Fixit Indexing Troubleshooter
6. Sfc /scannow
7. Tried this hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977380
8. Tried another user account and creating a new user account
9. Tried resetting folder view to "defaults" http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/15692-... Read more

It then asks me for my admin password. After I put it in, it doesn't work...

What do I do now?

Hi all,

I'm specifically looking for a way to change the logon screen Windows logo from its (personally) ugly appearence to white (both examples attached), I'd rather not remove the logo because I have it in my head that a plain white logo would match the "Windows 7 Home Premium/Ultimate/etc" text at the bottom of the screen.

I have opened authui.dll in notepad although I'm not too sure if it is possible to edit this .dll with notepad. I really do not want to use a resource hacker program to do it. I mean, I'm quite happy going into the registry to activate my own logon background and as happy editing a picture to fit nicely to my resolution! Hell, I go into the registry to do what most merge a downloaded .reg file to do! I am perfectly happy customizing Windows manually as I believe its a perfect way of being able to undo any problems that occur.

Excuse the length of this post and an apparent rant, I really am hoping that there is an "offline" method of customizing the logon logo!

EDIT: I don't mean the Boot animation. I just realized it may seem so by the attached images!

Cheers!

I have an extra account showing on my login screen called "Please logon and initialize your device". I don't know how it got there and when I click on it a smaller message under this account name says 'Press ESC for the Welcome Screen. However it actually just returns to the main logon screen. Also it does not show up on the Manage User Accounts screen so I can't remove it that way. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this account (error).

The problem is solved. It turns out that my laptop has a fingerprint scanner and it needs to be activated when more than one user accounts exist. It allows a user to login in by fingerprint scan. Way cool!

How can I just have "press ctrl + alt + delete to..." instead of this "Windows Security Button" part added on?

A:Remove "Windows Security Button" from logon screen

I would politely suggest reading this, and perhaps a mild use of the search function in the future.

Yesterday I started having problems with my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit desktop machine. Here's the sequence of events I would encounter:

I would start the computer, logon normally, and about 3 minutes after I logged on my video would go black, monitor lights blinking like there was no signal, but the power to the system was still running. Each time I rebooted into normal Windows boot, the system would result in the same error.

I tried re-seating all my components to no avail. I also tried unhooking one component at a time, to no avail.

I started trying to diagnose the issue. Event Viewer logs provided nothing except for some generic error codes which I reviewed on EventID.net. I found that booting into Safe Mode worked fine. I found that doing a Clean Boot would result in the error. I found that doing a selective startup with Windows Services only would result in an error. I found that booting with Diagnostic Services only would result in an error.

I tried using a Windows 7 repair disc to repair my install and that didn't work. When I tried to do a full re-install over my existing install, my computer wouldn't stay on long enough for everything to finish.

Finally at 9:30pm last night the system stayed on with a normal windows boot with all services running (with the cd-rom unplugged; I don't think this actually had any impact) for a few hours before I went to sleep. I left the computer on overnight to see if it would last.

This morning when I woke up at... Read more

A:Black Screen upon Win7 logon, now result in "Windows Failed to Start"

Since the error did not occur in SafeMode where Win uses a generic low-res 600x800 video driver, but occurred in Clean Boot mode, where your hi-res installed video driver is used, I would guess the problem is a corrupted video/graphics driver. You might try looking for the latest vid driver from the manufacturer website, of your particular machine.

a friend told me how to set up my screensaver so that it scrolls thru all my pictures in "my pictures" folder. I've done so, but there's quite a delay between pictures, it doesn't seem like it's showing pictures from the whole folder, sometimes the pictures are very small off to one corner, and in-between pictures the screen is blank for a bit and usually has a symbol on it such as a musical note, "exit", a figure running, etc. My friend seems to have hers set up the same way, but it doesn't have these problems. It just scrolls thru her pictures, one after the other, with the pictures taking up the whole screen.

Hey. I recently reformatted my hard drive. Although I have a Dell XPS laptop, I didn't have the disc and reformatted it using my friend's Dell Inspiron disc. We did, however, log into my account on the Dell site and we installed the drivers that originally came with my system.

Everything seems to be fine, except for two problems... (1) the screen resolution feels "squished", like the dimensions aren't right, and (2) when I go to shut down, the option to stand by is greyed out.

Any thoughts?

A:"stand by" option greyed out / screen resolution squished

This seems like your video card drivers aren't installed correctly. I would double check what model video card you have. Go to the Dell site and plug in your Service Tag #. That should pull up what drivers you need to load. If the video drivers aren't loaded correctly it may very well cause the standby/hibernate function to not work.
